I cant tell if I like the idea of the crew living their separate lives or sticking together better after they get back to earth.
either way, I think they would have this tradition where they perform their own version of the whisky speech. they buy a bottle of scotch and whisky that, much to his confusion, no one lets Eiffel drink. he gets juice or smth
it starts the same, probably by Jacobi most times. I like this scotch and so on. but in the middle it transforms into everyone sharing little anecdotes about their time in space, or on earth. about the past and about those lost. Maxwell, Kepler, Hilbert, even Eiffel in a way. just a little remembrance ceremony. happy or sad or maybe just neutral stories. there's probably a few tears shed. it was a pretty traumatic time. maybe sometimes they take a break from the past and talk about how life has been kicking their ass and how much things have changed.
it ends with someone saying something like "long story short, I like the feel of it in my hand" or "and to keep a long story short, you were nice to have. But nothing more than that." and pour out the rest of the bottle.
after a few years it changes into more of a celebration than a ceremony. they're still remembering the horror of it all, but now maybe its more of a joyful time to hang out with friends and share food instead of a sorrowful one.

if you dont fuck w jacobi and maxwell being best friends forever you dont fuck with me. Highlight of s3 relisten for me so far has been listening to them banter. It’s such a different banter from what you get from everyone else butting heads it’s so bouncy. It tells you they do this all the time but like. They’re friends about it. They hate each other but they also do nefarious shit together theyre bonded forever . Until the incident of course but i digress .

So insane about the platonic relationships in wolf 359. The way the character writing is so strong they don’t need to rely on romance to make any connection convincing, compelling, and above all else fucked up and codependent.
The way Eiffel and Minkowski just Get each other, regardless of their previous hatred of each other. We go from Minkowski hating Eiffel’s guts (valid) to them truly needing each other. With them being the only two they can rely on in deep space, it makes such a compelling narrative that has you questioning whether they would even be friends in any other universe. The way their stories work, they could even be your classic enemies to lovers (looking past some marriages and how their characters just. Aren’t.) but wolf 359 shows us that they don’t need that relationship status to have one of the most compelling and delightfully codependent friendships in the podcast. We get Hera squeeling over them calling each other “friends” for the first time, (same, hera, same), narratively treating them with the same level of respect as you would a romantic pairing.
Maxwell and Jacobi hit this similar beat for me, they have no romantic tension but have grown this reliance and deep trust in each other. The scene where Maxwell slaps Jacobi what has to be like 7 times in a row and cusses him out for flaking on her before they dissolve into giggles really defines their relationship to me. They’re horrible people. They know it. They’re monsters. Together. And besties yay! In other media their relationship may take a backseat, and while theirs isn’t the forefront it’s certainly never minimized in impact on their individual characters. These two go together, need each other. (They’re a set do not separate)
I’d even extend this to commonly headcanoned romantic duos like Kepler/jacobi and Hera/eiffel. The podcast doesn’t rely on romance, even if there’s implication, but gives us the strongest damned character relationships. The best possible use of characters in each others own and intertwined stories. The bone chillingly good codependency that can only be built by truly Knowing a person, even the horrible bits. Even liking the horrible bits. If this isn’t peak fucking over relationship anarchy I don’t know what is.

wolf 359 episode 53 dirty work is and always will be the pinnacle of cinema to me. nothing will ever come close to renée minkowski, grieving and guiltridden and lacking faith in herself. it was reflex, I think it was, I didn't want to kill her. the ghost of hilbert, not an enemy or friend, just someone whose blood is on her hands, saying do you remember the riddle of the orion? do you remember the question with no answer, what was your answer, and minkowski says the captain. she gives her command to lovelace, she asks hilbert what she should do next, she would save the captain because when minkowski is drowning she wants more than anything for someone else to take the lead.
and then jacobi, her mirror image in grief, hands her the gun, forces her in charge, and demands she choose again, kepler or the ship. there is no greater punishment for the one who killed maxwell than to make her do it again. how can you forgive yourself for making a choice with no right answers? how can you forgive the person who made the exact same choice you did? you think I don't know how sad you are, how unbelievably angry? two people died for good during the mutiny because jacobi and minkowski both chose not to back down. their grief is the same. their guilt is the same. their ghosts are the same.
so minkowski turns the gun on jacobi, because the only way to stop a cycle is to end it, and she takes the lead and the blame she's been dodging this whole time. I don't know how to fix this but she knows killing kepler is just kicking the grief down the road, problem for another day. maybe it was reflex, maybe it wasn't, but maxwell is dead and minkowski shot the gun and nothing will change it. it doesn't matter how you answer the riddle of the orion, it matters that you are the one answering it. however you make the choice, you still make the choice, and you can't pass the buck to anyone else. you have to do your own dirty work. and of course in the end the bomb is fake, because there would be no greater punishment for the one who killed hilbert than to make him do it again. so jacobi backs down, and minkowski takes command back from lovelace, takes control back of her life. and they move forward, because they have to, even if they don't know how.
and throughout it all, doug eiffel floats closer and closer to the star, and he realizes that he's had a choice to make this whole time. a way forward, even if he doesn't know how. a leap of faith.

Something about Jacobi’s clone in “time to kill” really messes me up. Because, like, after you listen to the episode where you find out that Lovelace isn’t the original Lovelace, we also find out that the clones don’t actually know that they aren’t the original person. The Jacobi clone was completely convinced that he was the original, so when the others left him outside, his last thought was probably that his friends had just made the worst possible mistake they could have made in that situation, that they had left him, the real Jacobi, to die and now they’re all in danger because there is something else that isn’t him on the ship with them. He died thinking that theres this thing that’s taking his place. This is the worse case scenario and there was nothing he could do about it. On the other hand, the real Jacobi, (assuming that the real Jacobi was the one inside the ship the whole time), had to listen to himself die. And i bet that after he finds out about how Lovelace is an alien, he thinks to himself, what if he isn’t the real Jacobi, that the real Jacobi died when they left him outside, and that he is the alien and just doesn’t know it. Because how could he know that? Lovelace didn’t, and he would never have any solid proof that he doesn’t know either. I bet it drives him a bit crazy, if he constantly has that thought going through his head.
I dont know. I think about this quite often.
