Is Marketing Inherently Manipulative?
A business organization functions in a fairly dynamic, complex and unpredictable Environment where the needs, tastes and preferences of the customer vary frequently owing to the nature of industry in which the organization operates. Indubitably, marketing of its goods and services is the quintessential part of the organizational activity so that it is able to sell more and encounter greater profits. A business may adopt different techniques of marketing to align customer interest with Business interest in order to maximize revenues. It should be kept in mind that these techniques used by businesses should be under the scope of legal compliance and must not invite any litigation from 3rd parties. However, at times it might be just subjective in nature since consumers react differently to same promotional activities. Marketing Ethics: Persuasion vs. Manipulation
The Germane question revolves around distinction between persuasion and manipulation. The following factors assist you in making a relevant distinction between the two- Intention Intention is a prima-facie in the judgement of the situation or a person. If a marketer attempts to engage in a practice that is not in the best interest of another, they are deemed to engage in manipulation. Withholding Truth Manipulation involves distorting or withholding of truth. Often, this is seen through exaggerating the usage of a product/service. Nowadays retailers, wholesalers, agents etc on a daily basis manipulate the public through overstating the utility of a product/service. Anything other than honest representation is blatant manipulation. Coercion Coercion is the expulsion of free choice. It engenders the ultimatum – do it or else. In contrast, persuasion involves influence, but never force. As communication scholar Dr. Richard Perloff writes, “a defining characteristic of persuasion is free choice”. The individual must at all times have the option to accept or reject a proposal. Therefore, an invitation that one is unable to say no to is bound to be persuasive in nature, but is deemed coercive and hence manipulative
The manipulative advertising inside the spectrum of the persuasive advertising – The persuasive advertising turns into a manipulative one depending upon the range of persuasion in advertising. It varies from most rational (factual information) to least (Force).
It is clear from the above table that Manipulation begins from deceitful Advertising which uses untrue, non-material, misleading statements while promoting a product/service and hence is also labelled as false Advertising. Next on the list are fallacious arguments or bad arguments and last of all is Emotive persuasion which plays with consumer’s temperament promising astonishing result. Examples would include Advertising of Diet pills, exercise equipments, traditionally made products, Green Products etc
Breaking down the situation: -
One of the key job aspects of a marketer is to persuade people to buy the product/service of a particular brand. Often, this persuasion becomes manipulation. All real world scenarios can roughly be categorized into the following situations-
Bridging the gap – Here the marketer just bridges the gap between buyer and seller. Example– X is looking to buy a television and Y is looking to sell one. So, the marketer just bridges the gap between X & Y
Making Product Choice for the consumer – Here the marketer makes the choice for the consumer by persuading him with product features and benefits. Example- X is confused whether he should buy a Sony or LG TV. And the marketer persuades him to buy a Sony one explaining its features, product life cycle etc
Making Seller Choice for the consumer – Here the marketer persuades the consumer to buy from a specified seller by disclosing all material facts. Example – X can buy TV from Y or Z. Y sells first copy & thus cheaper products while Z sells original but costlier products. If marketer discloses these facts, and is still able to persuade X to buy from Y, he would be considered an efficient marketer.
Unknown wants – Here the consumer doesn’t know what he wants. And the marketer introduces the product to the market and generates demand for it. Ex- X has no idea what to buy. Marketer introduces a new Sony television to X and persuade him to finally buy it.
This is the heart of modern consumerism and essence of modern marketing i.e. pushing consumers for products that didn’t know existed. The classic example of this would be I phone launched by Apple Inc.
Changing Decisions- Here the consumer wants to buy something else but marketer either makes him believe that some other product would suit him well or aggressively pushes them to make impulsive purchase. Ex- X wants to buy a LG TV. Marketer familiarises him with Sony TV and he buys it. But if Marketer exaggerates features of Sony TV over LG when there is no real difference between the two, it would be considered unfair.
In the above five scenarios, the job of marketer ranges drastically from just bridging the gap to completely wiping out the minds of consumers which enumerates the fact that marketing ethics spirals fast from simple to complex and the intent of the marketer is the key factor in examining the situation. There is a very thin line between Persuading and Manipulation which depends on a lot of subjective factors not only from marketer point of view but also the impact the marketing has on buyers.
A pragmatic Approach against Manipulative Marketing –
Consciousness in consumption asks for conscious advertising. Consciousness in consumption and business are indispensable parts of a manipulative-free marketing. The conscious consumer has a complex mix of responsible behaviours in terms of macro-economic concerns. The conscious consumption, ethical in nature, leads to consumerism activism practiced through positive buying. The consciousness authorizes the business to adapt to its environment promoting its interest and goals in a fair and non-manipulative way. Customer is the king-pin of business and affects it directly. The company has to well know in advance and understand the conscious consumers, if it wants to succeed in making conscious advertising. The better they comprehend the intentions, the methods and the messages of deceptive and misleading advertising, the consumers easier can distinguish between truth and fallacies or lies. When the companies make uncorroborated claims, they risk breeding cynicism and distrust. The dynamics of the realities about the conscious consumers should have a staunch impact on the commercial advertising. The companies have to learn the lessons emerging from the values of conscious consumers and their evolution in the future and create advertising messages accordingly. More ethical behaviour, more proactive self-regulation, better marketing cooperation are few key determinants in regard to it. Harmonising of operations or marketing cooperation between the companies and the consumers. An enhanced cooperation in advertising between the two subjects becomes possible when the company, the marketer includes the consumers in its marketing solutions. The consumers should become partners of the marketers, in order to contribute to the creation of value for them and to make a non-manipulative persuasive advertising.Management practice for marketers: Changing perceptionsTraditional Marketing only focused on directing the flow of goods/services from producers to consumers i.e. product oriented approach unlike modern marketing which focuses on value creation for its customers i.e. customer oriented approach.To break the prevalent stigma that businesses are deceitful, marketing should seek to be a social influence, specifically the kind that does not use deception or abuse to achieve its aims. Given increasing awareness of marketing tricks among consumers, marketers need to approach customers with sustainability in mind. Marketers should strive to create sustained value, owing to long term and short term implications on the product/service and ultimately on their brand. This enunciates the deep study of consumer behaviour, the creation of experiences not just products and services, developing healthy customer- relationships and being considerate of the impact of all practices on society more broadly. Only then, will we be able to counter the perception that marketing is manipulative. Conclusion -This finally answers the question tagging all along – Marketing is not inherently manipulative. Efficient Marketing involves all that is required to persuade the consumer to buy a specified good/service without using any form of manipulation or force. There is a fine line between persuasion and manipulation upon which the whole thing rests, which pertains to the morality of marketer. Therefore assuming a fair share of the marketers of this blue planet are not ignoble, marketing is adding to sustainability paradigm, value creation, positive social influencing, customer relationship and everything that is related to it but manipulation! Everything comes with its own merit and demerits. If you breed an orchard of apples, some are bound to go bad. It might so happen that more than half goes bad. But that shouldn’t deter you to stop eating apples altogether, rather this should empower within you the spark of breeding more good apples than bad. In a similar fashion, manipulation in marketing is a defect that needs to be rectified by punishing the gluttonous corporate who is willing to go at any lengths to soar up their profits. Breaking the stereotype that ‘Marketing is Manipulative’ is the need of the hour by being conscious consumers practicing conscious consumption. Introduction To Singly Linked List
You all might be familiar with arrays , Arrays are the contiguous memory locations that can store values of similar types
But there are few limitations with arrays:
Arrays have fixed size : The memory is allocated for array at compile time so at runtime of a program its hard to change the size of an array irrespective of the usage either the memory is wasted or is insufficient for performing operations in array
Insertion and Deletion in array is costly as compared to linked list : As array is stored in a continuous memory space therefore whenever insertion is performed elements need to be shifted towards right hand side such that a gap is created to fill the new element , in case of deletion , elements are shifted towards left hand side to fill the gap created by deletion .

These all problems were solved by Linked List
Merits Of Using Linked List:
As there is dynamic allocation of memory in a Linked List , hence there is no upper limit of elements we can insert and also memory utilization is very efficient in case of linked list as memory is not wasted , it is assigned dynamically when required and being released when not required
As the memory location are not continuous in case of Linked List at any random position insertion deletion can take place without the need of creating and filling gaps (like in the case of arrays)
Linked List is a non primitive data structure that contains collection of unordered elements known as nodes
Demerits of Using Linked List
To access any element in a linked list we have to traverse the list from starting node , indexing like in case of arrays are not possible, hence accessing elements in linked list is slow
In linked list more memory is required as extra memory is being utilized to store the address of next node(as the memory location are not continuous it becomes necessary to keep track of location)

Pointer/Address to the next node
Linked list is terminated by None/Null which denotes end of the list , we can use this logic in traversal to stop traversing nodes when encounter None/Null

Magical Diary Horse Hall By Hanako Games
Magical Diary is a game made by Hanako Games and tells the story of a girl that finds out she’s magical and ends up in a school to teach her about magic. Yes, quite like the Harry Potter or Teen Witch concept, but without so quite so much death and darkness.
This is one of their older games and is not voiced, but the art and the story are really good. The game plays like an otome style game, but also like a sim game. You get to choose your classes and build your magic skills to pass dungeons and progress through the story. Like other games with stats concepts, the skills you have and the spells you know will help or hinder your story line. So, make sure you save a lot and keep an eye on your abilities.

The game has a pretty typical title screen with all of your usual load, save, options, and quit necessities. Also on the title are some of the date options. There’s a total of 3 male options and 2 female options. The MC is a girl so there’s some nice representation in this game. Especially since there’s quite a bit of diversity between them.
My favorite romance option is Damian Ramsey. There’s quite a bit too him depending on the story you choose to play. You don’t have to romance anyone, but if you play it through, he can become your main villain. This makes romancing him very interesting in deed. And if you know my tastes, completely explains why I like him. Damian is flamboyant and secretive. He’s also quite a charmer and likes cute things so you’ll want to make sure you put on items that increase your cuteness.
Donald Danson is one of the other male options. He’s a trickster and trouble maker, but has a good heart. His route is pretty tame and you can focus more on building your stats than having to stay afoot of things like some of the other routes. This one will give you a pretty easy game and there’s lots of fun in the pranks. Also lots of detention.

This is Ellen Middleton and she’s the first of the female romance options. She is also one of your roommates. I haven’t tried her route as you have to raise her affection for you and there’s not a chart or anything that shows affection levels of characters. You have to make the right choices and be on her good side in order to romance her. She’s a very sweet and slightly shy girl, but she’s a good ally and is very smart. Her magic is pretty high too so being on her good side is a nice thing.
Virginia Danson is the other girl you can romance. She is also your roommate and another one I haven’t romanced. You have to raise her affection and you have to have wacky stats at a certain level to garner her interest. She is also the sister to Donald so some fun there. Virginia is a sporty girl and likes things outside the norm so she’s a fun one. Though you have to be careful as she’s a blow it up and ask questions later kind of person.
One of the other male options is your professor Grabiner. I’ve never tried him because one I don’t like him and two his route requires very specific sets of circumstances in the game in order to trigger his romance. Too much work for a cranky old man character that I have no interest in. The student teacher thing is great for some people, but Grabiner is always so cranky and I picture him doing nothing but yelling at students.
Supposedly Big Steve is a romance option, but I’ve never figured out how to romance him. He’s not a major character like the others and there’s some really specific things you have to do to meet him so I’m not sure how you’d romance him. Steve is a shy guy and likes coffee and arcade games, but that’s all I know about him from the few times I’ve run into him.
There’s one more character that you can kind of flirt with, but she’s not actually a romance option. I wish she was though. There’s a girl with fairy wings names Pastel that you can give a kiss to and is a romantic rival in some romance options, but you can’t actually romance her.

Once you start the game, you’ll get to customize your character. You can choose everything from the name to the body type. I always love a game that you can customize characters and I really like that this one allows you to choose the body type as well. I feel not enough games give you body type selections. Kinda wish there was a height option too, but I’ll love what options I do have.

The game play screen is a little bit cluttered with all of the stats visible at all times, but it works. Most of the otome game play elements function like normal and you can choose from two to five options that will dictate the story and help or hinder your romance. The general story play is fairly easy and the choices are decent. You don’t have the classic Voltage otome MC (I know I rag on them all the time, but seriously their MCs are terrible), so you get several options that don’t make you want to pull out your hair.
A few things I’d like to note here too. Your choices are sometimes affected by your stats. If your white magic for example is too low, you’ll miss out on using some white magic spells at key moments in the game. Though it’s not a big deterrent to the story, having certain spells at certain times to get different choices and make things easier. Or get you detention. You can play the game as a balanced game, or favor one magic over another if you want. Just take note of places where certain magic spells might come in handy and unlock more options on other play thorughs.

Speaking of magic, here is how you increase your magic skills and learn new spells. At the end of each week you’ll be able to choose your class schedule. Be a bit careful in your decisions because only sleeping and not going to class could get you expelled, but not sleeping could raise your stress to high and you won’t learn anything. Studying and going to the gym will help boost your stamina and your smart. These stats are useful later in the game as you’ll have a larger mana pool for big spells and more health for tests. Depending on the route you choose, it may also mean a better chance at passing the final test.
The other classes will boost your particular skills in a type of magic. Red is mostly destructive and offensive magic, blue is mind magic like teleportation, green is life magic for healing and life drain, black is manipulation kind of like transfiguration, and white magic is spirit magic for calling on the help of others.
There are benefits to each type of magic and I recommend starting off by trying out each one and seeing where what you like best. If you raise two types of magic high enough, you’ll get some nice combined spells that will let you use magic with two types.

Each week you get $5 in allowance that you can use for various things. Ever Saturday you can choose to go to the mall or to study. At the mall you can find the arcade, cafe, and magic store. The items in the magic store will help you boost your stats a bit. You can raise things like cuteness and each color of magic. If you are going to buy these items, you’ll want to save over a few weekends. I usually study on weekends where I’m not going to the mall. Or I go to the library to reduce demerits so I don’t get expelled.

You can equip the items you buy to your character and gain their stats boosts. Just don’t forget to equip them or you won’t get the boost.

This is the non-Otome part of the game and the part where you get to put your magic to use. Each month you’ll have an exam in the dungeons and you have to use the spells in your arsenal in order to progress. Each dungeon has many ways you can pass it, but if you don’t have the right spells or don’t have enough health and magic you can fail the exam. Passing exams wins you merits and failing ears you demerits and detention. This is a fun part of the game and the puzzles aren’t so annoyingly hard that you get fed up. I do recommend having at least a few spells in each type of magic to give you plenty of options for solving puzzles.

Here is a sampling of some of the spells you can get. This example doesn’t have any red magic showing here, but red spells are things like push and slash. As you can see, the more magic you have the more spells you can cast. The more types of magic you study, the more spell options you have. White magic and blue magic have some of my favorite spells in the game, but they are better for end game rather than the start.

As you go through the game, you can get several achievements. There’s quite a few of them and they are super fun to try. I recommend playing through the game once and just having fun with it before tackling these. Partly because some of them require you to be willing to fail a few tests to get them and partly because some require you to get expelled. Having mastery in a single magic type is fun because you get some cool spells, but really not practical for the exams. Especially in the beginning.


As the game goes on, you can go to a ball and your romance option will accompany you. You’ll get an end of the year photo with them and a little status recap of everything you accomplished. The MC starts off in Horse Hall with the sporty and brave girls, but you can make choices in the game that land you in Butterfly Hall with the cute loving girls or Snake Hall with the stranger girls at the end of the year. Below are a few other shots more to show you some of the items and a little bit how the pairings look.


Each romance option you do will also get you a cute little kiss CG.
As a whole this is a good Otome game because it’s an interesting one. I like traditional choose your adventure style games, but it’s nice to have some strategy and other things as well. This one doesn’t have a lot of CGs in it, but what it lacks in stills it makes up for in game play. Question 1. What are the goals of scientific enquiry?Answer: There exists diversity in types of researches or studies undertaken by psychologists but they all seem to share some common goals of enquiry, which are as follows-:
Description
This helps to define the phenomena and distinguish it from other phenomenas.
Description is necessary because any event or behaviour may have many aspects.
For example, the idea of entertainment varies from reading books to going to pubs, depending on the individual.
The recording of event or behaviour is an integral part of description.
Prediction
Prediction means forecasting of events.
It establishes relationship between two variables.
For example, one might say exercising leads to weight loss.
In psychology all predictions are made within a certain margin of error i.e. they are not pin-pointed or exact.
Explanation
Explanation involves knowing the cause or the reason behind the behaviour.
It also tries to understand the conditions under which a particular behaviour occurs. For example, a child behaves rudely whenever he is disturbed so his disturbances become the cause of his rude behaviour.
Control
Control means creating change in the phenomenon or behavior.
It refers to making behaviour happen, reduction in it or enhancement in it.
The changes produced by psychological treatment in terms of therapy are good examples of control.
Application
Psychological researches are often conducted to solve various problems faced by file society.
Psychology helps in solving problem at individual, organizational or community level.
For example, therapies are provided to individuals and counseling is also there to help them.
At file organizational level, various psychological concepts like work motivation are used to enhance performance. At file community level, counseling is provided to help people engage in various , helpful and eco-friendly behaviours.
Question 2. Describe the various steps involved in conducting a scientific enquiry.Answer: Scientific research or study is a clearly defined process that goes through a series of steps—
Conceptualising a problem
The process begins when a researcher selects a theme or topic for study.
Then the research questions or problems for the study are formulated.
Problem is based on the review of past researches, observations and personal experiences.
Problem indicates the relationship between variables.For example, what is the relationship between reward and classroom learning?
After formulation of problem, the hypothesis is formed, which is the tentative and testable statement about the relationship between two variables.For example, increased amount of reward will lead to betterment in learning.
Collecting data
Data collection requires developing a research design or a blueprint of the entire study.
Participants of the study are decided, depending on the nature of study, they could be children, adolescents, college students, teachers, workers, elder people etc.
Methods of data collection like observation, experimental, correlational method etc are decided.
The next decision is taken about the tools to be used, like interview schedule,. questionnaire, survey etc.
Procedure for data collection is decided i.e. how the tools need to be administered to collect data i.e. individual to collect data i.e. individual or group administration.
This is followed by actual data collection.
Drawing conclusions
The next step is to analyse data to understand its meaning.
The graphical representation of data is made using, bar diagram, pie chart, histogram, mean, median, mode, standard deviation etc.
The purpose of analysis is to verify a hypothesis and draw conclusions accordingly.
Revising research conclusions
The research begins with the hypothesis.
Then researcher sees whether the conclusions support this hypothesis or not.
If conclusions support the hypothesis then it is confirmed.
If it is not confirmed researcher revises or states an alternative hypothesis/theory and again tests it and the same process continues.
Question 3. Explain the nature of psychological data.Answer: Data is any information related to mental processes, experiences and behaviour, collected by using various tools.Psychological data are of different types, such as-:
Demographic informationThis information includes personal information related to a particular individual. This includes name, age, gender, education, marital status, residence, caste, religion, income etc, which are personally relevant.
Physical informationThis includes information pertaining to physical environment i.e. ecological condition.It also includes information about economy, housing conditions, facilities at the home, in the school, transportation etc.
Physiological dataThis is related to Biological data.For example, height, weight, heart rate, level of fatigue, EEG, reaction time, sleep, blood pressure etc is collected.Data related to animal’s biological functioning is also collected.
Psychological informationThis includes data regarding psychological functioning of individual.It involves data about intelligence, personality, attitudes, values, emotions, motivation, psychological dysfunctions, consciousness etc.Thus obtained data is divided into various categories, so that it can be analysed using statistical measures.
Question 4. How do experimental and control group differ? Explain with the help of an example.Answer:
Experimental group: The subjects in study who receive some special treatment in regard to the independent variable.In an experiment this group is administered the independent variable (the variable that is manipulated to see its effect on any other variable under study).
Control Group: control group is a comparison group.
The independent variable is not administered on this group.
Subjects in a study who do not receive the special treatment given to the experimental group.
The purpose is to see whether any difference occur in two groups as a result of application of independent variable on experimental group.For example, suppose, an experiment is carried out to study the effect of presence of others on helpful behaviour, one participant was put in a situation requiring help, say, someone drowning in swimming pool, here five other people were also present, another participant was alone in the emergency situation.In an experiment except for the experimental manipulation, other conditions are kept constant for both the groups.
Question 5. A researcher is studying relationship between speed of cycling and the presence of people. Formulate a relevant hypothesis and identify the independent and dependent variables.Answer:
Variable: It is any stimulus or event which varies or can take on different valves can be measure e.g. weight, height.
Hypothesis: It is a tentative and testable statement which expresses relation between two or more than two variables, e.g.: those who are rewarded shall require lesser number of trials to learn than those who are not rewarded.
Independent variable: It is the variable which is systematically manipulated or altered in an experiment. It is the cause.
Dependent variable: It is the variable that is measured in an experiment. It is the effect.
As per the question:Hypothesis. Presence of others will enhance the speed of cycling.Independent variable. Presence of others Dependent variable. Speed of cycling
Question 6.Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of experimental method as a method of enquiry.Answer: Experimental method is aimed at discovering causal relationship between various factors by manipulating the situation under totally controlled conditions.Characterstics:
Experimentation involves manipulation of variables to study their effect on other aspects.
Experiments are carried out in totally controlled condition.
Subjects or individuals are assigned to experimental and control group, randomly.
All factors other than manipulated variable that might affect the dependent variable are kept constant.
Advantages:
Experimental method aims at establishing cause-effect relationship between the variables.
Replication and verification of obtained result is possible.
The investigator can manipulate the independent variable according to thedemands of the situation.
It can be performed at any time.
It is very objective—No personal bias exists.
Limitations:
Experiments are conducted in a very artificial and unrealistic situations-the setting is not natural.

Can Black Africans Self-Govern Themselves?
Half a century after independence in the 1960s, the African continent is littered with failed states, collapsing nations, banana and coconut republics. This has given rise to widespread speculation whether black Africans are capable of governing themselves. This is idle persiflage.
There is an Iron Law of Nature: A species that does not do something right will become extinct. Call it survival of the fittest but the fact that black Africans for centuries existed before colonialism means they must have done something right. So look at the precolonial polities – the EMPIRES of Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Great Zimbabwe; KINGDOMS of Ashanti, Buganda, Ga, etc.
Ghana Empire lasted for 800 years and kingdoms lasted for centuries. So the more appropriate question is: why the precolonial polities were peaceful, stable and durable while postcolonial states are unwieldy, unstable and imploding.
The ANSWER lies in three key aspects of government structure and governance. 1. Eschew centralization of power. ALL the ancient empires as well as many kingdoms were confederacies, characterized by great decentralization of power and devolution of authority. By contrast, postcolonial states are characterized by concentration of power in the hands of one coconut, who locks up dissidents, outlaws the opposition, declares himself president for life, etc. OR controls all the institutions of the state, appoints the Electoral Commissioner and always wins coconut elections – just enough percentage points to avoid a runoff, like 50.1% of the vote – to return themselves to power.
2. Eschew the politics of exclusion, which is a Western import. There are two forms of democracy. Democratic decisions can be taken by majority vote, which is the Western way. It has the advantage of being transparent, fast and efficient. But the downside is that it ignores minority positions.
The alternative is to take decisions by consensus. This has the advantage of taking all minority positions into account. However, the demerit is that it can take an awfully long time to reach a consensus the larger the number of people involved. Nevertheless, the Nobel Peace Committee and the World Trade Organization (WTO) all take decisions by consensus. So too do many traditional African societies. African kings delegated their functions to Councils of Chiefs who took decisions by consensus. Similarly with chiefs and Councils of Elders. These councils were relatively small but even larger gatherings at village meetings took decisions by consensus also. These meetings are variously called asetena kese by the Ashanti, ama-ala by the Igbo, guurti by the Somali, dare by the Shona, pitso by the Xhosa, ndaba by the Zulu or kgotla by the Tswana. By force of logic, you cannot have despotism or dictatorship in a political system that takes decisions by consensus
The traditional system of governance was stable because it practiced the politics of INCLUSION. No one was locked out of the decision-making process. Anybody ‑‑ even slaves ‑‑ could participate in the decision‑making process. Taking decisions by consensus allows minorities to feel they “belong” and that their input is valued. This is important because in Africa, you cannot afford to ignore a minority position. It takes a small band of determined malcontents with a grievance to wreak mayhem. In 1984, President Museveni set out with 27 rebels to overthrow the government of Uganda.
In traditional Africa, there was also representation of slaves, the freeborn and the nobility at the royal court in most African states. There was even foreign representation. The kings and chiefs of Angola and Asante, for example, allowed European merchants to send their representatives to their courts. No one was “excluded” from the decision-making process, to use modern phraseology. “The Dutch dispatched an embassy to the Asantehene’s court as early as 1701” (Boahen, 1986; p.58). In Angola, King Alfonso allowed the Portuguese merchants to send their spokesman, Dom Rodrigo, to his court. Europeans could even be selected chiefs. For example, in 1873, Zulu king Cetshwayo made an English hunter/trader, John Dunn, chief of an isifunda, or district. “Dunn, not content to hover on the periphery of Zulu society, became fully integrated into the social system. He married forty-eight Zulu women, accumulated a large following of clients, and even rose to the rank of isikhulu” (Ballard, 1988; p.55). Also, as we saw in Chapter 3 with the case of Englishman Jimmy Maxen, who in 1968 became the odikro of Anyaisi at Aburi in Ghana.
By contrast, the modern system of government is often characterized by the politics of EXCLUSION. The classic example was apartheid in South Africa. Even more perfidious, equally heinous de facto apartheid regimes pervaded the rest of Africa. Under South Africa’s obnoxious system of apartheid, the white minority captured political and economic power while black majority were excluded from participation in government and the spoils system. But in Sudan and Mauritania, Arabs held power and excluded blacks (Arab apartheid); in Rwanda and Burundi, the Hutus and Tutsis alternatively usurped power; in Nigeria the Hausa-Fulani ran the government (tribal apartheid); Togo, Zaire, and Uganda were overtaken by the military (stratocracy); and Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania were run by one political party (one-party state).
In country after country after country, the postcolonial system of governance was brutally the same. One group – racial, tribal, religious, professional and political – captured the state, monopolized both economic and political power and used the instruments of the state to enrich itself, its cronies and exclude everybody else (the politics of exclusion).
Those who are politically excluded have three options,
1. Seek to remove the ruling vampire elites, peacefully or violently,
2. Vote with their feet and go settle somewhere to become refugees,
3. Secede from the country, as Biafra attempted to do from Nigeria in 1967
Since 1960, more than 40 wars have been waged in Africa, the vast majority of which was intra-state in origin. Nearly all the civil wars and rebel insurgencies were started by politically excluded or marginalized groups. These wars uprooted people and created massive refugee problems. The toll on Africa’s agriculture was particularly devastating since most of the refugees have been women and children, who constitute more than 60% of Africa’s peasant farmers. Africa used to feed itself back in the 1950s but not anymore.
South Africa saved itself by dismantling its racial system of apartheid but Rwanda did not and imploded in 1994. Neither did Sudan and South Sudan broke away in 2010.
3. Traditionally, African natives have always harbored deep distrust of the government or state and never expect the government to solve their problems.
