Dentist Discovers Human-Like Jawbone and Teeth in a Floor Tile
While touring his parents' recently renovated European home, a dentist spotted something unsettling. Embedded in a travertine floor tile along the hallway leading to the terrace was what appeared to be a human jawbone. Sliced diagonally, the tile revealed a cross-section of several teeth. Uncertain of the proper course of action, the dentist turned to Reddit, where the discovery ignited a frenzy of online interest, ranging from enthusiastic curiosity to sheer disgust.
The discovery has captured the attention of an international team of scientists who are eager to examine the fossil. They believe it could belong to an extinct human ancestor.
"If it turns out to be a fossil hominin, which I think it is, it should be studied and placed in a museum," John Kappelman, an anthropology professor at the University of Texas at Austin who specializes in hominid and hominin origins and evolution, said in an email.
Travertine, a type of limestone commonly used in construction due to its aesthetic appeal and longevity, often forms near mineral springs and can contain fossilized remnants of past life. While plant, algae, and even animal fossils like those of rhinos and giraffes are occasionally found in travertine, human remains are exceptionally rare, as noted by University of Wisconsin paleoanthropologist John Hawks, Forbes reported.
In a blog post titled "How Many Bathrooms Have Neanderthals in the Tile?" Dr. Hawks highlights the uncommon nature of this particular discovery.
"I expect there will be many twists and turns in the story of this jawbone," Mr Hawks wrote. "With some teeth preserved and abundant surrounding rock, I expect that specialists will be able to learn a great deal about the life of this individual and when he or she lived."

The European dentist, who specialises in dental implants, told Forbes that he immediately knew he wasn't just looking at stone tile's natural pattern variations when he saw several teeth staring up at him.
"From my dentist's point of view I had no doubt it was some kind of human," he told Forbes. "The teeth distribution and size of the mandible is characteristic. Also, the width of the cortex is specific to ancient humans."
"I don't think it is Jimmy Hoffa," the dentist joked in a follow-up to his original Reddit post. He said he prefers not to reveal his name, or his parents' location, to protect the family's privacy.
When the dentist spotted a jawbone as part of his parents' home upgrade, he was surprised for a different reason.
It is very, very unusual to find vertebrate fossils in processed travertine tile, and hominin fossils 100 times more so," Kappelman said. "We have only a handful."
Mr Kappelman was part of a team that observed the earliest evidence of tuberculosis etched on 500,000-year-old human skeletal remains discovered by factory workers in Turkey cutting travertine tile for commercial use. The scientists published the findings of their research in 2007 in The American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Fuck It Friday

kicking things off early (even though I’ve been up since 5:30am to go to the dentist early) with some more holiday movie au - I am so close to being done with the first chapter!
“So, I was thinking…” Eddie says slowly. “When Chris and I get back from Texas – absolutely no pressure on you of course – but if you wanted to, I thought maybe…”
Buck’s heart starts rabbiting in his chest. Is Eddie trying to ask what Buck desperately hopes he’s asking? Buck risks a glance at Eddie and sees that his face has gone red. Oh god, it’s really happening. Buck turns quickly to face him, accidentally knocking a knife and a pie server off the counter and to the floor.
“Shit,” Buck mutters, mentally kicking himself for interrupting Eddie. “Let me just –”
“I got it –” Eddie says.
They both crouch down and reach for the utensils at the same time, their hands brushing. Buck feels electricity zip up and down his arm at the contact and immediately springs to his feet.
He forgets about the cabinet open above him.
There’s a sharp, stabbing pain as he knocks his head into the corner of the cabinet door, and then everything goes dark.

2025 Summer Solstice Life Update
Somehow it is the summer now and I am baffled as ever and the steady marching of time. Its pace never changes yet it manages to sneak up on us all in the strangest ways.
I have officially finished my first year of university and am on summer break! I, of course, have stayed hellaciously busy this time but in good ways I chose for myself.
Spring was good for me. Crazy inside as always but I think that’s just what change and newness does to some of us and boy howdy is spring a time of change and newness. The tail end of the school year I was all over the place busy with school and work and friends but it was a good crazy and busy unlike some other crazy and busy times in the past year.
I’m currently supposed to be writing some short answer bits for a scholarship application due Saturday/Sunday so of course I’m writing this instead but that is how it goes and how I suspect it will always go for me. I’ll get the other things done eventually...just not right this second.
Once again a season change has come around without me doing any actual planning to properly celebrate the solstice or equinox but I am working a ton this time so at least I have a bit of an excuse.
:–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–:
March
After the equinox the rest of March flew by. The last few highlights of the month were getting to attend a lovely and insane co-birthday party of some friends (shoutout to you both, Natalie and Meredith – love ya forever) and seeing Hadestown at the godforsaken Soldiers & Sailors Auditorium (I still had a great time at the show cos it’s Hadestown but man oh man do I dislike that venue).
:–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–:
April
April began with a bang – Sparty was the first weekend. Spary (spring party) was a great and exhausting time and I’m glad I actually participated this time. I also did an interview for my summer job in early April and that went very well. Perpetual Motion and my second all day shapenote singing were the highlights of the Sewaneroo weekend. For all the hype Sewaneroo had gotten during my time here thus far it sucked ass real bad this time ‘round. I hope it’ll be better next year but this year no one gave a shit about the bands and it was cold and they lied about free food so everyone was upset. April was also the month of Twelfth Night in Angel Park, so I spent a lovely but chilly evening watching some silly and wonderful Shakespeare. The month closed out with the final orchestra concert of the school year and attending some final performances for theatre classes my friends were in which was a lovely interruption of finals prep.
:–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–:
May
May started with a trip to Nashville to go to a craft store with theatre folks, seeing Hamilton at the aforementioned godforsaken Soldiers & Sailors Auditorium, exploring the bell tower in the middle of the night, another trip to Nashville to see Diary of a Wimpy Kid (The Musical), back to town for Clue, and many late nights in the TWC. More friends in performance finals for classes and finals of my own, then a crazy hectic week at home trying to get everything done at once. During that week I managed to hang out with my family a good bit, go to the dentist, see my brother’s orchestra performance, hang out with Zoey before she left for Texas for a month, see Brittany, go to a new (to me) restaurant, make two Second Life trips, get piercings with my father (yay finally getting the nose piercing I meant to schedule almost two years ago!!), and watch the first two Eurovision semi-finals with my mom. Finally back in Sewanee, I moved into my summer dorm room and watched the Eurovision final. (Side note: what the fuck. Bonkers ass ending to the show this year my god.) Quite soon after moving in I moved some of my stuff out to Clifftops to cat/house sit for about two weeks which was really lovely. I got to go down to Atlanta for a friend’s high school graduation party and then back down again a week later to go see a bunch of rarely screened experimental and avant-garde short films at the Plaza which was a mind bogglingly incredible evening. I also started my summer job! Working the front desk at the gym is a really chill gig but sometimes really irritating cos of all the old men.
:–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–:
June
Not to sound like a broken record but June started with a bang (literally). I woke up at 5 am on June 1st in the Clifftops hours with someone banging on the side door next to the room I was staying in. He never said anything but he did bang on and pull on the door forcefully and repeatedly for a long time. It was, as one can imagine, quite frightening but he did not get in the house and we are yet to figure out who he was. I was (perhaps obviously) unable to sleep after that...incident so I just stayed awake and eventually got ready to go to an all day shapenote singing at Liberty Baptist in Henegar – a really lovely singing if I do say so myself. I also got a tour of the back of the ATO house on campus and a look at and conversation about the spring that is back there and what potential it has as an art space in the future. After cat sitting at Clifftops, I moved back to my dorm for a week, then moved back to Clifftops to stay with Libba and Henry for another two weeks for Shakerag things. I also had a wacky weekend at the beginning of June where I went to Tryon on a Friday for Uncle Ben’s funeral (which was on Saturday), down to Atlanta on Sunday for a movie day at Anthony’s with the crew, home for a bit to hang out with my parents, then back up to Sewanee on Sunday night so I could be back for work on Monday. It was a whirlwind of a weekend and I was so glad to see a lot of people I don’t see very often both in family and in friends. During Shakerag session II I did my usual thing of coming for dinner and hanging out during the night since I wasn’t staff that week and could do that after Fitwell work or going to help Roman build strange statues for the first fall play. I got a good bit of IPM work and cross stitch done during those late night hang outs in the studio but boy oh boy was I tired the next week. And of course the next week was the week I was actually working Shakerag on staff! It was a dream team of staff folk for my first time working there and it was such a good time. I am so excited to keep working there during summers for as long as I can; the staff, faculty, and participants are all so lovely. I did the mending workshop with Katrina Perdue and it was a very silly, fun, informative space to be in that week.
:–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–::–☆–:
And now it’s the solstice! (Secret time – I was so busy with Shakerag when the solstice actually happened that though I started this ahead of time I am only getting around to finishing it almost a week later...shit happens.) I cannot fathom that we are truly in summer now – no, scratch that, I can believe we’re in summer. It’s hot as hell out here and humid as fuck so summer has truly descended upon this lovely mountain.
Anyway, here’s to creativity, following passions, living it up, reading, partying hard, and sleep.
Until next time, stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold.

Smile Makeovers with Porcelain Veneers: Aesthetic Advantages
If you’re looking for a way to completely transform your smile with minimal hassle, smile makeovers with porcelain veneers may be the perfect solution. Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells that are custom-made to cover the front surface of your teeth, correcting a range of cosmetic imperfections. Whether you’re dealing with chipped, discoloured, uneven, or slightly misaligned teeth, veneers can provide a natural-looking, long-lasting solution.
Why Choose Porcelain Veneers? Porcelain veneers offer several aesthetic advantages that make them a popular choice for smile makeovers. Unlike teeth whitening, which only addresses colour, veneers improve the shape, size, and symmetry of your teeth. They can also close small gaps and cover minor misalignments—making them a versatile cosmetic option without the need for braces or aligners.
Natural Appearance and Custom Fit Each veneer is custom-crafted to match the colour and contour of your surrounding teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural look. Porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel, which helps your new smile look both bright and realistic. The process begins with a consultation and digital imaging to design veneers that perfectly suit your facial features and smile goals.
Durability and Low Maintenance Porcelain is highly durable and resistant to staining, which means your veneers will stay white longer than natural teeth. With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or more. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups are enough to maintain their beauty and function.
Instant Confidence Boost One of the biggest benefits of a smile makeover with veneers is the confidence it brings. A beautiful, even smile can enhance your self-esteem and leave a lasting impression in both personal and professional settings. Many patients feel more comfortable speaking, laughing, and smiling after their transformation.
Smile makeovers with porcelain veneers are an ideal solution for anyone seeking a dramatic yet natural enhancement to their appearance. From correcting minor flaws to creating a uniform, radiant smile, veneers deliver impressive results. To explore if this cosmetic option is right for you, consult an affordable cosmetic dentist in Spring, Texas 77388 who specialises in creating beautiful, confident smiles tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Dental Crowns: Types, Procedure, and Lifespan
Dental crowns are one of the most common restorative treatments in dentistry, offering protection and strength for damaged or weakened teeth. Crowns can restore the natural shape, function, and appearance of a tooth. There are various types of dental crowns, each offering unique benefits depending on the individual’s needs. Whether you’re dealing with a broken tooth, a large filling, or a cosmetic concern, a crown can be an excellent solution. If you're considering a crown, consulting with a family dentist in Spring, Texas 77388 will help guide you to the best option for your oral health.
Types of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns come in a variety of materials, including:
Porcelain Crowns: These are ideal for restoring front teeth as they closely match the natural color of your teeth. They provide an aesthetic solution while also being durable.
Metal Crowns: Often made of gold or other durable metals, these crowns are strong and long-lasting. They are commonly used for back teeth where appearance is less of a concern.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns: These combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain. They are durable and provide a natural-looking appearance, making them a popular choice for both front and back teeth.
Resin Crowns: These are typically more affordable than porcelain or metal crowns but may wear out faster over time. Resin crowns are often used as a temporary solution.
Zirconia Crowns: Known for their strength and natural appearance, zirconia crowns are a great option for long-term durability, especially for patients who grind their teeth.
Procedure for Getting a Dental Crown
The dental crown procedure typically involves two visits. During the first visit, the dentist will numb the affected area, remove any decay, and reshape the tooth to prepare it for the crown. An impression of the tooth is taken, and a temporary crown is placed until the permanent one is ready. The second visit involves placing the custom-made crown over the prepared tooth, checking the fit, and making any adjustments before cementing it in place.

From a friend: *A RECAP OF THE LAST THREE WEEKS*
AMERICA: Oh my god! Coronavirus! What should we do?
CALIFORNIA: Shut down your state.
AMERICA: Wait... what? Why?
CALIFORNIA: Because 40 million people live here and we did it early, and it’s working.
OHIO: Whoa... whoa... let’s not be hasty now. The president said that this whole coronavirus thing is a democratic hoax.
CALIFORNIA: He also said that windmills cause cancer. Shut down your state.
TEXAS: But the president said that we only have 15 cases and soon it'll be zero.
CALIFORNIA: The president can’t count to fifteen. Nor even spell it. Shut down your state.
NEW JERSEY: Us too?
CALIFORNIA: Yes, you guys too. Just like when Christie shut down the bridge, but it’s your whole state.
FLORIDA: But what about all these kids here on spring break?? They spend a lot of money here!
CALIFORNIA: Those kids invented the tide pod challenge. Shut down your state.
LOUISIANA: But wait let’s have Mardi Gras first. It entertains people.
CALIFORNIA: It also kills them. Shut it down.
GEORGIA: Ok well how about we keep the state open for all of our mega churches? Maybe we can all pray really hard until the coronavirus just goes away!
CALIFORNIA: Which is working like a charm for mass shootings. Jesus told us to tell you to shut down your state.
OKLAHOMA: What about the tigers?
CALIFORNIA: What about a dentist. Shut it down.
WYOMING: Hold up, maybe we should go county by county like the president said.
CALIFORNIA: Stop acting like there are counties in Wyoming. There are no counties in Wyoming. Wyoming is a county. Shut it down.
PENNSYLVANIA: But big coal.
CALIFORNIA: But big death. Shut it.
WEST VIRGINIA: But we were the last state to get coronavirus!
CALIFORNIA: And don’t make us explain to you why that was. Shut it down.
NORTH CAROLINA: But the republican national convention is coming here!
CALIFORNIA: SHUT... ok fine do what you want.
