Scream VI (2023)

If there’s a horror franchise no one should’ve expected to continue for over 20 years, it's Scream. Every entry has found something new to say about the horror films it both pays tribute to and makes fun of while delivering visceral thrills and compelling mysteries. Scream VI, starts promisingly but winds up delivering mostly more of what we’ve seen before rather than innovating, which is a disappointment. It’s still worth seeing but isn’t essential, and when you’re this deep into a franchise, you need to be.

It’s been one year since the events of Scream V. In New York City, Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega), along with Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown) are brought in for interrogation after a string of murders committed by someone dressed in a Ghostface costume. In no time, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) is there reporting and everyone receives threatening phone calls from someone who wants to continue the “movie” Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman started. With everyone and their roommates (which include Tara’s roommate, played by Liana Liberato, Chad’s roommate, played by Jack Champion and Mindy’s girlfriend, played by Devyn Nekoda) threatened, are they supposed to stay close together and keep an eye on each other, or stay apart and risk being alone when the killer shows up?

The meta angle of this film is that it is not really a continuation of the Scream franchise; it’s a sequel to 2022’s Scream a.k.a. Scream 5 and a post-revival, post requel sequel. This means - in theory - that Ghostface is “the main character” in the same way Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger were in the later chapters of their series. Ghostface is now the face of the franchise. Everyone else is expendable, to be replaced with new victims in the future so we can have a steady flow of blood and gore. It also means that we’re now following Tara, Sam, Chad and Mindy - rather than legacy characters like Sidney (Neve Campbell doesn’t appear in the film) - but we still have a link to the past for old fans thanks to Gale. That’s neat, but the downside is that ultimately, it’s doing a lot of what Scream 2 was doing, because Scream 5 was “a do-over” of Scream. Aside from a scene that breaks down the rules of this movie (and one after the credits that's pretty rad), there isn’t much here that feels novel. Aside from a few scenes where characters start becoming slightly indestructible, however, it’s still a well-made whodunnit that will keep you guessing.

Once more, the film’s success comes from the characters. We’ve only met the “core four” one movie ago but already, the thought of them getting killed or grievously injured fills you with anxiety. There’s something about these young performers, their camaraderie and the way they fit in the film that makes you want to see them live. A part of us also wants to see people die, however, so we get plenty of carnage. The killings are particularly brutal and there are a good amount of laughs thrown in too. Basically, everything you want to see in a Scream movie is present. This chapter brings a couple of novel elements to the killing floor, with one attack in a grocery store being particularly effective. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a slasher movie do that trick. Then, there’s the mystery aspect, which is also satisfying. The script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick keeps you wondering. As you think you're ready to reveal your prediction, someone bites the dust, or narrowly survives an attack (to be fair the latter doesn’t even necessarily clear them, since several of the films have featured multiple killers). The conclusion is particularly well done, even as it sometimes approaches the realm of "preposterous" because it elegantly wipes the slate clean should we get more of these.

What sort of place Scream VI has in the series will be determined by what follows. If we get a weak Scream VII, or nothing at all, the best this film can hope for is to be watched as part of a Scream marathon that's determined to go on to the end. I have some reservations about Scream VI but can already feel this story growing on me, mostly for some clever meta aspects, the core characters, for Gale, and for Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface. (June 29, 2023)

Said Sam walking over to you and Quinn "I haven't seen her" you said opening a chocolate bar "don't get mad but she went to the party you told her not to go to" said Quinn walking towards the kitchen "I begged her not to go to that" said Sam in an annoyed tone rolling her eyes

You guys were practicing for a few hours now it had to take longer mostly because you guys forgot your lines or just wanted to mess around with each other Tyler didn't seem to mind as long as you guys got the parts right "alright let's take a small break meet back here in an hour" said Tyler walking away you yawn and stretch as you looked for your friends "hey y/n!" Called out jack

"you did amazing" said jack making you smile "thank you I'm sure you will also do great in the party scene" you said as you felt the cold wind making you shiver you completely forgot your jacket "here wear this for now" said jack taking off his and handing it to you but before you could say anything you hear a fake gag in the back of you guys

"are you two done yet? We don't want to see you make out in front of us" said jasmin with a smile "we weren't going to do that" you said trying to hide your embarrassment "not yet at least" said jack giving you a gentle nudge he wasn't helping "we are going for some milkshakes" said Devyn who was being dragged away by jasmine saying that they should give you some alone time

"we will catch up with you guys later" said jack waving at them goodbye "why later?" You asked turning to face him "because I have a feeling they won't leave us alone once we get there" said jack putting his arm around you pulling you closer to him "I wasn't lying by the way" he said "what do you mean?" You said tilting your head a little "about the tickets" said jack pulling out the tickets

"jack I was kidding" you said with a small laugh "I still wanted to spoil you after all you deserve it" said jack giving you a small peck "everyone is going to see" you whispered looking down you weren't used to this "so? Let them no one is telling them to watch" whispered jack wrapping his arms around you if he keeps up like this there is no telling what is going to happen next

context: Devyn is a makeup artist for Lucif (a rockstar/song writer) and prior to this they had a disagreement which involved something he did when he thought she’d leave.

Thud.

The door left an imprint on the linen of the walls, essentially altering the patterns on the delicate wallpaper before slowly retreating to the frames after a second of obnoxious creaks; unable to fully shut. Except Devyn didn’t seem to pause in order to close the door; shifting quite briskly through the unkempt lounge that seemed to have the goal of slowing her down.  She felt her limbs were a cluster of flesh with the way she’d frequently trip and tip while carrying herself further, even worse was she herself was in a state that would require rest, thoughts as messy as her surroundings.

An exasperated groan had her leaning upon the wall behind her, scanning the area in hopes to find something— anything useful. She pushed her nosy curls off the tips of her eyelids digging her fingers into her palms as thoughts in hues of black and white had her falling into concern. She could hear the sounds of thick muffled music beginning to permeate throughout the room from above her, prompting her heart to kick start into a disorientated rhythm.

 Keys on a piano began to dip allowing delicate notes that seemed to guide the tempo stream through the room with a natural gentleness you’d find evoked eased memories. It was briskly matched with mellow male vocals that spoke of love in a manner that resembled an unrequited confession. She felt her organ quiver at the sounds of thick bass begin to drip into the rhythm, as if to imitate food colouring to a thick batch of icing.

The melody engulfed her senses, blinding her as she practically blubbered down the corridor, fingers tracing the walls.

She couldn’t help knocking props meekly placed to the sides, stiffly retrieving them with damp lids. She tried to ignore the way her body trembled so subtly the louder the music became, soon overtaking any sounds of her thick heavy inhales she could no longer control. She dawdled into a room, noting the sounds of sharp rustling the deeper she pushed. 

Her mossy pupils lifted and indulged, although hesitantly, on the new biome she found herself in. Recorders, tuners, coal shaded speakers and other tools riddled the room in a maximalist manner, reminding her she was in a personal dressing room in search of someone important. Her fingers skimmed the props and material, a frown riddling her cheeks as she noted the messy state they had been left in; only to briskly retract once she felt rightfully uncomfortable coming into contact with things she could only assume he treasured.

Thump—.

Her head clicked forward, her body going stiff as hairs she didn’t realise existed seemed to tingle beneath her outfit.

A brownish cream yellow shade had her pausing in her tracks, despondency engulfing her proceeds whe she began to crane her neck towards the floor.

!

It was his.

The gold tips of an instrument had caught her eyes as she noticed it was his electric guitar awkwardly strewn a few steps away from her, barely visible behind a pile of records. She blinked small pints of liquid off her eyelids, staggering forward to peer down at something she knew he held in high regard. 

Fuck…

The skin near her chest began to irritate, sudden pauses in her proceeds had her arms finding support from a desk she found stood besides her completely unaccompanied. She couldn’t focus, not when her pupils dripped with emotional agony she wished would just vanish, but god she needed to… she needed to. 

She understood he could irrational at times, emotionally and physically, but never could’ve pictured he’d have her feeling like this, so distraught she could only imagine the worse even when nothing in particular could prompt such a thought. She found her actions stupid, just a few minutes ago she was screeching his name with dispotency she never dreamed she could muster, and now she was frantically requesting his presence.

She could stop the weak groan that bled from her lip arms pressing the cloth that was a part of her clothes onto her eyes—

That’s when she heard the continued struggling from ahead of her, tuning the aggressive rhythm of the melody out, and forcing her body to indulge on what could be before her.

Her appendages forced motion, her steps jagged but reliable as she pushed deeper into the room. A thick pale door, hidden by the walls and surroundings, stood between her and noises of thick and disoriented whimpers she could notice through a natural disaster. She allowed a weak swallow, canines pressing on her lower lip accidentally engulfing lipgloss she wouldn’t have noticed if it wasn’t for the sudden hypersensitivity she began to endure.

..

Every thought that would’ve tore her down arrived too late, the door now off it’s henges and wide open, this time not creaking at all like the first, instead mimicking slow wheat in an empty field before it came knocking on the wall besides it.

A damp breeze hit her features, forcing her to stagger back.

There was a rancid silence that mimicked the ending beats of the overture— where the overwhelming sound of gathering audience could be made out from above them, or the subtle sounds of Devyn’s nails scratching at the wallpaper in a lucid state as her thoughts shifted in an attempt to adapt to the situation, ultimately flailing to do so. Her pupils felt cautious in its survey of the room, as if any sharp shifts would break something vital— and perhaps it would’ve as it paused on the fragile thing before her.

The off-blond male sat slumped, head dipped towards the floor; short hair unable to conceal his pale yet saturated cheeks, eyes that seemed worn and gaunt with rampant emotions and plump downturned lips that hide his sharp canines. A tiny, white bottle was tipped besides him lid left open; its substance visible. Capsuled pills that now seemed useless after coming to contacts with the floors.

Fuck, he was a mess.

His thin track jacket was thrown quite carelessly into the damp sink, toilet rolls streaming across the floor, some crumpled and tattered with transparent liquid, others discarded and seemingly untouched.

She took a fragile step into the room, the door behind her finding the frame with a dainty;

Click.

He hadn’t noticed her abrupt entry, noticeable by the unruly posture he maintained, strained white knuckles that seemed only slightly red at the tips and clenched jaw as if restricting the distorted groans his lungs pushed. 

The way Devyn found her organs began to force blood through her body hinted to the way her body was processing the sight, a thick swallow had her Adam’s apple shifting.

“Luci,” her voice felt fragile on her throat.

His body pulsed at the sound of  her voice, eyes frantically peering forward to what seemed to be an angel to him— pupils sore and damp; stuck in a thick haze, yet simulated to breath her in as if she where prescribed medications. It came so natural to him, seemingly colourless pupils trained on her figure— fingers almost clawing for her contact, limbs strained so as to not overstep boundaries he hated so fucking much.

He was fucking lost, craving pills that would end in overdose; but feeling as if, without them, he had already died. 

These emotion remained boiling in his appendages, muscles frozen as if he’d only be able to mold himself into a living being on her command. 

— but she didn’t know that. 

His broad chest seemed to heave up and down, stretching at the thin compression shirt that seemed to outline each and every muscle he had strained along with his body—-

and fuck that hurt.

Her inhales couldn’t be subtle, it was crumbly and incoherent, playing in his ears like an off-tune violin. She pressed her acrylics to her chest, fiddling, although subconsciously, with the rim of the jewel, features twisted and wrinkled to form a thick sombre— something his pupils swiftly tore from, unable to stomach such an unfamiliar feature.

She found herself cautiously approaching him, each step she took prompting sharp clinks that resembled sentient beads clearing out of her way as she staggered forward, except all she did was scatter white, bland capsules in errant, silent paths.

 She felt a little lucid all of a sudden; mental state uncertain, mind swarmed with loud thoughts. She tipped, curls limiting her sight to just the quartz tiles of the floors beneath her and the thick ringing in her ear drums.

Thud.

She had her figure right before him, to the floor and mind reeling as to what she should do next. The organ that sat right beneath her ribs seemed to thump for freedom, trembling even when incased in so much protection— she was clearly nervous.

Nervous when she could feel the male’s skin press so gently on her own, almost as if he was reassuring her, when is ever so clearly should have been her doing that, nervous when she could sense his fingers were warm and mildly damp, features a tender wan he couldn’t conceal even with his neck craned to the floor and nervous when she finally decided to attempt to move, shifting into a position less straining. His plump red lips seemed to mold into a soft frown, eyebrows easing only slightly as he watched her adjust. 

Nothing about this situation had her appendages relaxed, thoughts just as messy as the floor she had her legs pressed against, inhales hidden behind the rustles of the breeze from outside.

“Devyn..”

He almost shuddered her name, fingers only subtly pushing against her skin.

“Devyn— look, i—“ his tone was so fucking delicate, dips in his speech and continuous pauses prompting a halt in most movement, include his own, before he forced a meek swallow; pupils dipping towards the ground.

He was so soft— lashes silky and dewy; an easy-on-the-eye blond to match his strands, strands short and lanate, each tousled hair almost begging to be touched, and yet she wouldn’t, not in a situation like this.

“I swear.. god I swear dev— I didn’t. (!)”

Her palms could feel the thick silk of his compression shirt, abruptly tugging the male forward leaving his words unfinished— each and every one of his limbs obedient to the action. 

“Fuck. Luci.” Her brows were carved deep into her skin, lips subtly tremulous to the eye contact that began to manifest— she felt  uncomfortable and yet she’d initiated the sudden proximity. Lucif hung low, neck craned only slightly forward in order to keep her irises on him, the way he wanted it. The way he needed it.

 “—Listen.” 

She inhaled briskly, attempting to draw his shattered thoughts together as if she was a broom upon unkempt floors— features holding an evident amount of austerity.

But he wasn’t— hazel pupils glazed at the proximity she had instigated— utterly devoted to her. Goosebumps formed on the heels of her arms at the sudden contact of his thick palms upon the rims of her hips, guiding her a little closer, all the while he seemed trained on her features.

“Lucif.” She uttered again, this time pressing her acrylics into his shoulders in an attempt to draw his wandering mind, “Do you hear that??” She allowed the continuous eye contact to shatter, bringing her own to the ceiling where the echoing of a crowd can be inferred after the rough sounds of footsteps. 

He gently followed her gaze, senses and thoughts working to understand what she was attempting to hint at. A second tune began to play, sounds of eager cheers overwhelming the now eased sounds of inhales that had overtaken the room when shrouded in silence. 

The notes were muffled, nearly foreign through the harsh sounds of hollering, and so Devyn didn’t bother deciphering it, allowing her neck to dip back to Lucif, who swiftly met her pupils with his own. 

She didn’t bother interrupting the few periods where the tune seemed to play, praying the pale blond male would soon come to realise he was meant to be up there. Except not for a second did he seem to acknowledge, nor did he try.

“You have to go, now Lucif.” She could feel the lack of urgency in his gaze, his index fiddling with the material covering her waist in-between hard gasps that resembled a hiccup.* the tiny little  short hics while he seemed to try to calm himself with their proximity. 

* don’t know how to describe singultus.

A small exhale had her picking herself up, his fingers gently streaming off her hips as the frown he maintained dug deeper into his features. She tried to avoid his broken gaze, pressing her lips together as she took a few steps back.

 “What-why you leaving—?” Those words came out gentle off the eardrums, playing with her heart a little.

He was a mess.

She had long forgotten that even after entering his rooms, after seeing the state he was in, one she now understood she had prompted. 

She was being insensitive.

Reluctantly, she acknowledged that.

But the male didn’t allow a minute of distance between the two of them, fingers revisiting the fabric of her clothes essentially halting any space she was forcing. 

And as she took another frantic step—

Thump;

On her back.

Her elbows dug into the quartz tiles beneath her steadying her sudden drop as it prompted a small wince from her lips. Both his palms were pressed besides her, leaving her trapped in a state that was half beneath him.

Her heart faltered, walls she had reinforced crumbling at the sudden contact both their eyes made— full of tender emotions. She hadn’t time to adjust, canines clenched tightly against each other in an attempt to gather her thoughts.

He was most definitely in a different head space.

 She found she couldn’t understand the way his heart seemed to hammer at his sore chest, the nervous whimpers that would slip from his lips so naturally when she seemed to back up a little too far for his liking, and so she forced empathy to guide her. 

She took a second this time, allowing the breeze to intertwine with her insides, leaving her mind a blank canvas. She could admit she found it awfully stuffy, breaths fanning upon one another with only a pause to inhale, the atmosphere she suddenly realised she’d been caught in leaving her alert, attentive to his actions— which where.. still, expectant of something.

Her ?

She couldn’t help the nervous wander her eyes began to do, peering above the male and at his locks, not too curly, just a little wavy; streaming in tousled directs across his head and onto his neck. Her vision shifted to the colourless sink, inspecting the pearly white hue that had the light bending to its desire, only to then slip down, down, down, to a peculiar bottle she recognised as a pill container. She had noticed it when she entered, but hadn’t given it much of a thought since she had been so focused on Lucif himself—

—but as of current she found that action flawed.

Her lids almost came pressing down on her pupils, attempting to squint to read the label and perhaps understand why he was in possession of something like this— only for him to move into her peripheral. 

His lips parted to make way for a mellow groan, hinting slight bitterness when he noted the way she seemed so devoted to something he himself couldn’t see. Devyn didn’t let that deter her from reading said label, almost too focused to peep the way Lucif had began to follow her gaze.

He seemed to visually pause, hairs falling a little close to his eyebrows at his sudden shift. He leaned a little further from the brunette, a little somber in movement.

“Valproate capsules.” 

She pinched her lips against each other, fiddling with the her thick hoodie as she swiftly returned to face him; features a little abashed when she noticed he’d been observing her. He seemed content with having her eyes back on his, fingers only subtly tracing circles on her legs.

“Vapo—valp-“ she paused when she herself couldn’t pronounce it, easing a little when she noticed the way Lucif grew more tender to the touch at her reposed nature. “Valproate,” he hummed, pupils avoiding hers after a few seconds and instead on her uncuffed joggers.

“They’re for my uh..“ he swallowed a little too fast, thick Adam’s apple bopping up and down before going stagnant. His lashes looked extremely abundant when faced with the hue that was the suns rays, damp and prosperous with tears; you’d have thought he was an angel if not for the thick streaks of a worn pink that where his eye-bags and nose. 

“—some emotional issues.” 

It almost felt as if winds halted for him to speak, atmosphere growing empty as if his words took away life, and it likely could’ve with the way it had Devyn internally feeling.

“Oh.” 

She felt her teeth sink into the flesh on the sides of her mouth as she drowned herself in mental tension, lips sealed stiff to stop any more stupidity from leaking.

Fuck.

She was visibly strained, only inhaling when she felt he didn’t notice, and choosing to move when she had fully gone over her reaction. 

She guided her fingers to his arms, just below his thick shoulders. Her nails came into contact with his skin first before the tips of her skin followed, pressing only slightly into the dips of his muscles in a more placid tune keeping her body language calm and upright. The pattern at which he was breathing seemed to dip for a period, returning only when she paused— “uhh..“ she caught his hazel irises, locking them in place, “I don’t view you any different.” She cleared her throat, watching him visibly falter.

Her cornea dipped, no longer glancing at him and now at the tiles again, she hadn’t withdrawn her finger though, drowned in thought as to what to say next. 

It always came during moments like this, clammy fingers, a wandering mind and glazed pupils, she could only briefly inhale, hopelessly gathering her thoughts even though they slipped like fine grains of sand. 

“I’m sorry.” She kinda just opened her mouth at this point, curls no longer subtly hanging before her eyelashes, now overwhelming her vision. She withdrew her index, placing it on her thigh where she finally noted his hand also rested— albeit tremulously. 

“If I had known I wouldn’t have said those—“

“You had every right to,” he dug his nail in the patterns of her more baggier sweatpants, oxygen rubbing against the tube right after his lungs, wary and docile. Devyn forced strands off her face, no longer enabling the muffled sounds of the heavy melody from above, cloud her consciousness, she had realised now that forcing him into the stage light in such a state would be against her conscience, he was so raw and close to complete vulnerability—

“I— I wasn’t thinking..” he bites his lower lip, palm digging into his right eyelid all the while his features showed how strewn he was in his thought.

“About you or what you had wanted—“ his finger returned to her lap, allowing both pupils to slowly set themselves upon her again. He squinted, facial expression wrinkled to translate the gallons of desperation he had deep in his flesh, “At the time— I’d failed to realise that..” he muttered when he noted she hadn’t built the courage to respond yet, “—but now I understand ! I swear.’” his nails dug a little too deep into the fabric of her clothes, “So you don’t need to be upset with me anymore.. Please.” His mien was coarse and sharp, lips nervously pressed together as his torso leaned a little towards her for a sip of proximity, almost begging her with his eyes to stay stagnant so he could near her.

Just the way her eyes visually pressed against his features left his lungs feeling all clogged and restricting, chest just as tight even when he adjusted his shoulder with a subtle shudder.  

His fingers found discomfort in sitting still, messing with anything it came into contact with all the while Devyn seemed to fiddle with her own. She couldn’t think between awkward inhales, she stopped her dawdling and turned to him reluctantly, “Listen..” an exhale had him waiting for her response,”honestly I feel like I was overreacti—“ 

“—Devyn. You know well you weren’t.” His eyelids narrowed, features wrinkling with hints of wilted frustration, “don’t keep acting like things aren’t a big deal when they are to you.. people will take advantage of that.” He pressed both his indexes  just below her thigh, an action she found her eyes had shifted to during the silence. “You can be honest with me, I promise..” his voice eased against her ears “Ok bunny..?” —words pronounced with so much care you’d assume it was made of glass. 

Devyn found his comment had somehow cleared her mind, head nodding without a thought like how her pupils were glued to her joggers where Lucif found his fingers were fondling with. “Alright..” she half whispered half sighed, a palm to her stomach as she insured she was calm, “.. I felt hurt… I didn’t get why you’d do something like that, it didn’t make sense to me.” She groaned, tipping to the right a little as her eyes wondered to room.

She paused, returning eye contact only to turn away after a few sets of staring, “I came here looking for more opportunities,” she bit her lip a little, thoughts replaying the past, “and when I finally get it, you almost rip it out of me,” she couldn’t help how silly she felt at how exaggerated she sounded, it was just a piece of paper, and she could acknowledge that.

“Bunny..”

A whimper slipped out of his lips, features thrown into a state of subtle perturb at her expression. 

“But think about it..” her tone subtly strained, her features winkles from the brow to the nose bridge. “If I hadn’t asked would you have even told me??” She couldn’t help the little frown she stab the male with, who visually paused when he noted such. She opened her plump lips to continue; but nothing came out— as if whatever she wanted to add was left clogged between her throat. She was nervous.

—and he was scared.

Even her curls couldn’t conceal the hurt he was the root of, lips uneasy, palms sweaty, heartbeat just as unstable as his thoughts. The windows were sealed shut, blinds acting as security to a rave party, only letting a few in.  

She wouldn’t understand.

His fingers hovered away from the fabric he had been fondling with, both his palms meeting each-other; an attempt to gather his thought while his heart kicked at his ribs.

She wouldn’t understand the way he found thoughts in shades darker than his irises riddle his mind when it came to her and her attention, the way he’d find his fingers dug into her waist prompting bruises she’d often fail to notice, or even the way he was becoming an active insomniac with the way he was constantly thinking of her— her safety, her face, the way she seemed to get so flustered for him, her lips— god her plump lips he wish was carved deep into his skin.

Devyn had her eyes right against his, herding his wandering mind with only her uncertain gaze, green pupils seemingly weak and timid. It was almost as if she’d given up on communicating, ears surrendering to the thick sounds of drumming and other uses of an instrument from above.

And he tried to maintain the silence, in hopes that maybe it would help her ease, breathing less forced and features no longer pale and as tense, but the longer he seemed to drip into her features the harder he found it became to keep still, lips subtly quivering and pupils growing messy. 

“Devyn,” he almost groaned beneath his breath, “are you going to leave me?” 

—And although he hadn’t uttered it with any notable force, the way his hazel pupils pushed against hers had her feeling the question held more meaning. 

Underneath the cadence they seemed settled, unaware of the shifts going on beyond the world they had created for themselves leaving the room overwhelmed with muffled sounds of a tempo, thick and sonorous. She bit the left of her lip, a plangent furrow of her brow prompting a tremulous exhale she couldn’t help but release. He too seemed stiff, lips distanced to reveal his canines and features deeply creased with dolour from the brow to his nose.

“No.” Her voice was less than relevant now, lips settling atop her canines while her limbs seemed to dip deeper into the mattress. Her pupils were glued to the ceiling, nails digging into her stomach mercilessly, yet she could barely sense it, thoughts leaving her disoriented and unfocused. Her curls were left unshielded against the thick silk pillow she had eased into, prompting her to pick herself up and reach for her bonnet, which was left hanging on the edge of her cupboard. 

She could still feel a thick build up of strained emotions in her throat, unclear shades of light hitting her skin in response to her movements, which now consisted of her tying the straps on her thick satin bonnet.

BACKGROUND

-gabriela was born during a hot summer in 2004. to a family in new orleans who simply just couldn't afford a child at the time. they left her on the front steps of a local catholic church, wrapped in a old green scarf, the only token from her birth parents.

-unfortunately, despite her best attempts, she was never adopted. growing up in the orphanage, she grew close to a girl her age named devyn. she too had been brought into the orphanage at a young age and was placed in the same predicament. the two bonded over the family they found in each other and pinky promised, something very sacred to a 7 year old, becoming sisters related in everything but blood.

-devyn and her went to the same college when they became of age, this was something that gabriela thrived in, her thirst for more knowledge once having the right resources became a driving force in her academic life. being in this type of environment also caused her social life to grow. sadly this wasn't the case for devyn, who later in turn struggled with drugs, after being sexually assaulted on school campus.

-gabriela tried to help her sister get back on track, but eventually devyn began to self medicate. although gabriela loved devyn, she often resented the bad decisions she would later make.

-graduating with a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, she took an internship and became very busy trying to reach her end career goal of providing more sustainable energy to the residents of new orleans. devyn had dropped out and never graduated, and as gabriela became busy, the two grew apart and didn't see each other.

-one night when gabriela was getting ready for party to celebrate her nomination at the ernest n. morial convention center, devyn showed up asking for money. not even acknowledging all the hard work that gabi had put herself through to make sure her sister got the proper treatments. distraught and broken down, gabi threw money all the money she had in her purse at devyn before storming out. later after taking some time to think and breathe, gabi returned only to find her sister had overdosed.

-despite all her best attempts to resuscitate her sister, it didn't work and gabi broke down blaming herself for what happened. suddenly a stranger named arcadius appeared, showing her a vision of devyn suffering in hell. before he could even propose the deal, she jumped a the chance offering her soul to bring her sister back. there was more to the deal though, she also was charged with bringing him the souls of the wicked for as long as he deemed fit. once her sister was breathing again, gabi was dragged into a hell dimension where she was a servant for arcadius.

-becoming a demon sent gabi on a journey of all things gender and being and even became one of the best soul bringers that arcadius had ever seen. but then it all changed when she met tyler lockwood. on a full moon he killed a camper by accident, watching as he mourned the victim, it was then that they saw into his mind and was able to realize that there wasn't any evil lurking there. tyler only suffered from anguish and remorse, something that struck a chord due to the way her sister had suffered.

-this fateful night changed everything for gabriela, she became less malevolent and manipulate, feeling remorse for their past victims, something unusual for a demon.

-after meeting tyler, it was impossible for her to want to be with anyone else. he helped find a loophole that restored gabi's soul from arcadius. later the two started a family, the child became an anchor from the darkness they still possessed.

-being a mom is really fulfilling for gabi, she taught her kids to be good people with values and hearts of gold. making sure that none of them felt as if they weren't enough for this world. a lot of her being a mother, involved the type of parenting she would've flourished in. (since these spots are still open, this will remain tbd. however the kids can be adopted or biological, all is welcome.)

-josie saltzman was born in 2014 and considered a miracle, both her and her twin sister lizzie were born thanks to magic. a spell that saved both of them, caused her to have a different parental history than most. her mother josette, was killed by their uncle kai. growing up she only knew her mother as caroline forbes, who she loves deeply. mystic falls isn't a place she knows very well, having to leave once it was deemed free of supernaturals.

-growing up in new orleans. she visited art museums in her free time and became close friends with local witches. the mikaelson boarding school of the gifted was a wonderful place for her to grow and learn her magic. being near powerful witches such as freya mikaelson and vincent grifith showed her that she too could hold that much inside her without turning bad. yet dark magic is something that would always find her. she still turns to it in times of desperation, despite her twin sisters pleas.

-yet despite their parents best attempts, the merge couldn't be stopped. causing both her and lizzie to go through with it, even though neither them consented. in the end josie won and it broke her far more than she could ever explain. causing her to go into a deep depression for a few years.

-hope and josie went on a trip to europe after the merge, both of them devastated with the loss of lizzie. the two began to dabble in black magic, among other things. they ended up finding comfort in each other, both acting on the crushes they held for each other as teens. but the two were far too broken for any of that to work. it ended on terms that weren't exactly great, josie left to go back to new orleans to study art. lizzie's words about dark magic and it's dangers ringing in her mind.

-it took a bit of time, but she began to love art again. getting a degree in art history and working as a curator at NOMA. something she hoped lizzie would be proud of. yet she was also a bit of recluse, she would go to work and then go back to her apartment where she would fill her time with anything other than human connection.

-things are changing however, now the dead are back, somehow this curse created a loophole, allowing lizzie to come back despite the merge happening. (since this role is still open, i will leave it tbd.

-eleanor was born to a fairly normal family, her mother worked as a teacher and her father a truck driver. they were a normal middle class family that seemed to get along. until one day when they got into a car accident, the only one safe was her since she was in a car seat, only 3. this changed the course of her entire life, the doctors gave both her parents pain medicine and from there they were hooked.

-they tried really hard to take care of her and also get their fix, but the system only lasted for so long. one day they left her at home alone and the neighbor found her, she was 6 years old and unable to care for herself fully. from there she was placed in the foster system.

-she managed to thrive in the local orphanage, having a resilient energy that grew from her time with her parents. they sent her to school and she grew to love english the most, wanting to read everything possible once having access to a library.

-at the age of 8, she was adopted by nora and mary, or as she'd like to call them thelma and louise. the two of them cared for her very deeply, helping her with night terrors and depressive episodes. she wasn't able to tell her feelings to anyone, unable to trust thanks to the damage caused by her parents. yet they never gave up on her, giving her time to open up and find the words for all her feelings.

-as a teen, she did well in school, keeping close to her adoptive family and spending her time reading. people viewed her as an odd book worm, but since she was kind and pretty they didn't bully her too much. yet she didn't have many friends, that was until college.

-in her freshman year of college, she flourished, learning to find her voice and with the encouragement of friends and teachers, began to write a memoir. the whole thing was meant to be published until her tragic death, it was at the hands of someone she trusted, however it was an accident. since she was so young and meant to be published, her death made headlines.

-she has now been brought back to life, confused and unsure of her place in the world.

-after securing the mikaelson family after being posioned, hayley takes hope on a roadtrip in hopes of finding a cure. while doing this she does everything in her power to learn more about the magic her daughter possess, wanting to be a guiding light in all of this. after a few years, she leaves hope with mary dumas to go to austin texas to find a pack that might have answers.

-while in austin, texas she meets keelin (this will be tbd since this character is open, but basically i'd like for hayley to be nicer about the whole cure thing ha).

-all of her hardwork pays off and she is finally able to bring the siblings out of their slumber and back into the real world. it's an emotional reunion, one that doesn't last long since klaus is still in marcel's prison.

-after managing to get klaus back, he finally is able to meet his daughter. it has been years since they've seen each other but she has promised to keep his memory alive. later she finally tells elijah that she has done things she regrets to get all of them back, killed and betrayed to cover her tracks. it's something she that makes her feel heavy to this day.

2023 Movies You Need to Watch (Part One)

The year of 2023. What an interesting year it was for me personally. Honestly, I’m done with this year, so instead of thinking about the memories I’d rather forget, let’s go through the best movies of the year!

Scream 6 (Released March 10th)

Director(s): Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

Scream 6 is the first movie on my list and first horror movie! With the fifth movie being an excellent addition to the franchise, this sixth installment takes us out of Woodsboro and into the city that never sleeps: New York. This movie clearly benefits from the change of scenery, adding suspense in ways that was unreachable for the franchise until this point, like the subway scene with Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) or the ladder scene with Anika (Devyn Nekoda). The story follows sisters Sam (Barrera) and Tara (Ortega) as they fight against another Ghostface.

What made this one stand out to me more is the lack of legacy characters this time around. Courtney Cox returns as Gale Weathers, in a very small cameo, while Hayden Panettiere reprises her role as Kirby Reed from Scream 4 in a much more substantial role. Despite those additions, this is Barrera and Ortega’s movie, with their relationship becoming the main thing holding the movie together. The Ghostfaces (Yes, more than one) are kinda mediocre and predictable, but the motives aren’t, which makes up for it. All in all, an awesome suspenseful film that is a perfect end to a franchise, thanks to Barrera, Ortega, and the director leaving. 

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Released March 31st)

Director(s): Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley

An underrated gem from this year is Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The trailers did this movie an injustice, as it was nothing like they made it out to be. Pine and Rodriguez play a perfect platonic pair of friends as they try to survive in this big fantasy world. The story follows Edgin (Pine) and Holga (Rodriguez) as they travel across the world to save Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman) from Forge (Hugh Grant). Everyone plays their parts to perfection, and it makes you feel like you’re playing as these characters, and it shows that not everything will go as planned.

There are so many funny moments from the Fat Dragon to different ways Edgin gets out of sticky situations. It also helps that both Smith and Lillis play excellent side characters that add to the awkward dynamic that may feel familiar to D&D players. Along with that, there are fun cameos from different actors that I won’t spoil that made me and my friends laugh. I hate that this film didn’t get more love because it truly is a joy to watch it. All in all, this is an amazing movie that deserves more love, and you should give it a watch if you haven’t, you’ll enjoy it!!

Evil Dead Rise (Released April 21st)

Another horror movie that came out this year, and on my birthday, was Evil Dead Rise! This was my first time watching an Evil Dead movie in the theater, and I really enjoyed it, thanks to other patrons in the theater. This movie was brutal, but not as brutal as the 2013 remake. A lot of people were mad about how goofy the movie was, but that’s actually my favorite part! It was like a return to the original Evil Dead, taking it back to its roots. I loved the change in scenery, from a cabin in the middle of the woods to an apartment building on the verge of falling apart.

The cold open was literally the best part, shoving people into the deep end and showing what’s to come. The story follows sisters Beth (Sullivan) and Ellie (Sutherland) as Ellie becomes possessed and begins to attack her sister and three children in their apartment. It was so suspenseful and insanely dramatic, to the point where it was laughable in the best way possible. Although, I’ll admit, the ending kind of lost me a little, I was willing to look past it thanks to the performances of the actors on screen. Overall, I say if you’re a fan of the first three Evil Dead movies starring Bruce Campbell, I highly recommend it. If you’re a fan of only the 2013 remake, I suggest going in with a bit of a warning that it is not as intense as the previous remake. 

Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 (Released May 5th)

Director: James Gunn

The end of a beautiful trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 not only solidifies the fact that this is the best trilogy, but also Gunn’s reputation as the best director in the MCU. From the very beginning, Gunn perfectly captured the tone of the film, and didn’t let me go until the very end. The story revolves around Rocket (Bradley Cooper) suffering a deadly injury, where Peter (Pratt) and the other Guardians travel to save him.

Throughout this movie, I was so anxious that someone was going to die, but to my surprise, Gunn didn’t kill anyone off. I adore this film so much, and while Gunn has left, I will hold this story and the other two in my heart forever. The Little Mermaid (Released May 26th)

Ah, the best Disney remake. Ariel has always been my favorite princess. I wasn’t born when the movie first came out, but coming from Hawai’i, I’m constantly surrounded by water, so how could I not have Ariel as my favorite princess? When I heard that they were remaking it for live action, I was excited. I was even more excited when they casted Bailey in the role.

Although I am not African American myself, I am a POC, and it made me so happy to see representation. I can see the joy in other girls' faces when they see Bailey performing as Ariel, and it brings a tear to my eye. I never had anything like that growing up and seeing them makes me so happy. Spider Man: Across the Spider Verse (Released June 2nd)

The sequel to the highly praised Spider Verse movie has finally been released this year, and it does not disappoint. First off, addressing something in the room, although it is a Part One to another movie, this is a full movie, and it does end on a cliffhanger, but it has an ending! This movie tries to pack so much into its runtime, that I’m surprised it even accomplished being a complete movie! It builds off of everything that happened in ‘Into the Spiderverse’, building off of characters like Gwen and Peter B. Parker, while also making us care about new characters, like Spider Punk and Spider-Man India.

This might be pretty contriversial, but I am not a fan of Spider-Man 2099, he’s too much of an asshole for me to care about him. The only saving grace is that he’s played by Oscar Isaac. Also, Jason Schwartzman as the villain was surprisingly amazing, and his origin story is hilarious. All in all, an excellent sequel that leaves me dying for more!

Elemental (Released June 16th)

Pixar is still releasing bangers, with Elemental being added to the list. First off, the trailers did this movie a HUGE disservice! It sold it as some whimsical world where elements live together in harmony, but it is a retelling of Sohn’s life story told through the eyes of Ember (Lewis). It is emotional, and it hits me in a certain way, thanks to being raised with Asian parents.

Ember and Wade (Athie) are both adorable in their own way, and I believe that people just saw this as a Zootopia rip off and decided not to go. It’s not!! They’re two different stories!! Please go ahead and watch it if you haven’t!! You will not be disappointed. With Pixar movies just being shoved into Disney+, Elemental deserves to be on the big screen.

General appearance: jewelry fanatic -- dangly earrings, charm necklaces, and signet rings are just a basic look for them, has bleached their hair but doesn't do it regularly, judgy resting face, doesn't smile much, french tip nails

Personality: sarcastic and snarky, not afraid to speak their mind, brutally honest, horror movie fanatic, tough nut to crack but would do anything for those close to them, soldier coded

Special talents: shapeshifting, swimming, crushing those "find something in a messy place" minigames

Who they like better: Variel, the two of them are some of the last few shapeshifters out there, so it doesn't come as a surprise that Aubrey feels more of a kinship with her

Who they take after more: an even mix of both, Aubrey has Variel's mean girl tendencies and Tyler's affinity to connect with others (once the sassiness is off), as well as his thoughtfulness and her creativity

Personal headcanon: Aubrey's favorite thing to use their shapeshifting ability is to change the color of their hair or nails to see if the shade works, they've also done this to see if a raven tattoo would work on their arm (it doesn't)
