Eyes Like An Angel

Eyes are the windows to the soul. At least that’s how Christian remembered the saying. It didn’t make much sense to him when he had first read it, how could someone’s irises and pupils show a clear picture of who they were? That didn’t make any sense. Until he met him.

The wedding reception was simple but elegant, with a buffet-style food service, plenty of seating, the cake in the center of the dining room, and a large dance floor complete with a DJ setup.

Christian hadn’t had the time to say hello to anyone besides the pack before the ceremony, as he had been helping the mates get ready. However, now that the reception was underway he had started to mingle with the other guests. The first person he met was a girl who looked to be in her early twenties. Her jet-black hair was braided into a neat bun with gold jewelry that complimented her navy blue dress. What took Christian back was her eyes. Behind the golden frames of her glasses were her dark brown, nearly black, eyes. Despite their dark colour, Christian couldn’t help but feel as though he was being pierced by her gaze.

“Hello! You must be a member of the Shaw Pack?” Her voice was soft but sweet, holding her hand out for Christian to shake.”Oh, hi, yes I am. My name is Christian. And you are?” He took her hand and shook it, noticing how easygoing she was. “Nice to meet you, I’m Griffin, that’s my older sibling.” Griffin gestures to Angel who is currently talking to Arden. Christian was taken aback for only a moment before really taking a closer look. He realizes that, while they may not look identical, one thing remains the same between the two siblings. Their eyes.

Angel’s eyes weren’t quite the same colour as Griffin's, but the sharpness of their gazes remained the same. Christian knew that Angel was a middle child but he had never actually met either of their siblings. “Nice to meet you. I wasn’t aware that any of their family members were informed.” Christian mentioned casually, generally curious but not wanting to sound nosey. Griffin giggled softly and leaned against the table behind her, “Yeah, actually both myself and my brother are informed. I’m informed because of an incident that happened when I was younger. The Department couldn’t safely wipe my memories so I was just given informed status. I’m a paramedic back home. It's a cornerstone city like Dahlia so I deal with both empowered and unempowered people.” She says while taking a sip of her drink. Christian nodded softly, and, despite being his nosey self, decided to refrain from asking questions about whatever incident had led to her being given informed status.

Just as Christian was about to ask something, Arden came by. “I see you met Chrissy.” She teased and Christian rolled his eyes. Griffin smiled and a little bit of blush dusted her cheekbones. “Guess so, and you are?” The unempowered girl had shifted her gaze to Arden and it seemed as though Arden had no issues with that. Deciding to leave the two, very clearly flirty, pair alone, Christian made his way to the bar.

It was an open bar, and it wasn’t super busy at the moment. While waiting for his drink, Christian glanced around the room. Asher and his mate were sitting with Tank and Sam, seemingly chatting. Milo and Stealth were engaged in an expressive conversation with a few of the Keyton Pack members. Gregory Keyton was talking to Angel, who was laughing while David appeared to be blushing beside them. It was nice to see the pack not only together, but also to see them celebrating such a momentous occasion for the pack.

“Is this seat taken?” A low, smooth voice asked which startled Christian out of his thoughts. ‘Oh uh no.” The shifter turned around to see who he was talking to and locked eyes with a man who just so happened to have the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. The man smiled, his eyes crinkling in the corners as he did. He had on a navy blue suit with a navy blue tie to match. “Do you mind if I sit here?” He asked, his voice was deep but not at all gravely. Christian just shook his head and shuffled over. The man smiled again and sat down. He looked about Christian’s age, maybe a year or two older, with dark brown hair slightly bleached in some places, and hazel eyes that Christian swore looked bronze.

“Wonderful, thank you. My name’s Declan by the way. You are?” Christian felt the tips of his ears turn red. Why is this guy flustering him so much? “I’m Christain, uh, I’m a member of the Shaw Pack.” He said and looked back to Declan who nodded. “Ah, my younger sibling is your alpha’s mate.” The dots suddenly clicked for Christian. That entire family must all have that same piercing gaze, but Declan’s was weirdly comforting. To Christian, it felt like Declan was giving him a warm hug with just one look. “Oh, you’re their older brother? Also informed from what Griffin said?” Christian asked, to which Declan nodded and smiled once again. “Yep that’s me, and yes, also informed. I’m a SAR technician, I work with a few wolf shifters.” Christian nodded again, he wanted to keep talking to Declan. Christian felt his core thrum with energy every time that Declan talked and he felt happier than he had in a while.

“Are you here with anyone?” Declan asked before Christian could. The shifter shook his head and took a sip of his drink. “No, I’m by myself. Are you?” Christian asked and looked at the other man. He hoped that the answer was no. Declan shook his head. “Nah, I’m on my own too. Although everyone has been very welcoming.” He added and looked back at Christian, “Sorry if this is too forward, but can I just say that you have a beautiful smile?” Christian felt a blush spreading across his cheeks and he smiled bashfully. “No, it’s not too forward at all! Um, you have pretty eyes…they’re kind of like an angel.” It was Declan’s turn to blush but he moved a bit closer to Christian and leaned down a bit so that they were at eye-level. “Well, aren’t you sweet? Would you like to dance with me?” He asked while looking up to see that people had started heading to the dance floor. Christian blushed but nodded a bit more vigorously than he meant to. “Yes please, I would love to.” Declan smiled and took his hand, pulling Christian to his feet and leading him over to the dance floor.

The songs were a mix of slow dances and more upbeat dance music. Declan stood at just about half a foot taller than Christian, and he gently guided the pair through the first few dances. For the remainder of the reception, Christian was either dancing with Declan or talking to other guests with Declan at his side. By the end of the night, he had his number and a promise of a date later that week.

“So I’ll see you on Thursday then?” Declan asked while handing Christian his phone back after typing in his number. Christian nodded and blushed as Declan’s hand brushed against his. “Yeah, Thursday at Max’s” Christian confirmed and slipped his phone back in his pocket. Declan smiled and held Christain’s hand in his own, squeezing it gently. “See you then, love.” He said before giving his hand one last squeeze and heading out the door.

Christian stood there with a stupid grin on his face until Asher found him. “Oh, there you are Chris-whoa!” The beta looked quizzically at Christian. “Dude, are you ok? Why are you smiling so hard? Also who were you with all night?” Christian rolled his eyes but couldn’t wipe the grin off his face. “I got a date with Declan.” Asher’s jaw dropped. “You got a date with our alpha-mate’s older brother!?!?” Angel, who heard this, peaked around the corner and grinned. “Arden got a date with my sister!”

Everything to know about The Opening Finals 2018

The action gets started on June 30. Here’s your schedule, roster, event notes, and more.

Nike’s The Opening Finals, the year’s annual biggest camp for football recruits, is this weekend. Out of the 163 prospects in attendance, a whopping 25 are five-star recruits, per 247Sports, and another 107 are four-stars. The Finals from Frisco, Texas features a variety of competition-based events, including a 7-on-7 tournament, a lineman competition, and a Nike training camp.

You can follow along with all of the action by following @SBNRecruiting on Twitter, we’ll update this post periodically during the event, and we’ll have plenty more later on.

Nike training camp: Sunday 4-10:30 p.m. ET

This event is like the NFL Combine, with each player receiving an athleticism score and the winner being crowned.

Each prospect will run through drills, which are rated with Nike’s Football Ratings system. Some notable winners from the past include former Texas A&M receiver Speedy Noil and former New York Giants safety Landon Collins.

7-on-7 pool play begins Monday at 11 a.m. ET. Championships begin on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. ET, with the finals at 2 p.m. ET.

There are a total of six teams for the 7-on-7 tournament.

With five Alabama commitments, Tide fans will be paying attention to Team Hype, led by quarterbacks Dylan Morris and Taulia Tagovailoa, running backs Trey Sanders and Patrick Garwo, wide receivers Joshua Delgado, Cornelius Johnson, Trey Palmer, Mycah Pittman and Garrett Wilson, as well as tight end Jahleel Billingsley. The linebackers are Diwun Black, Shane Lee and Mekhail Sherman, cornerbacks Kaiir Elam, Marquez Beason, Christian Williams and Erick Young, as well as safety Tykee Smith, Raymond Woodie III, and DeMarcco Hellams.

Georgia and Auburn fans will closely watch Team Boomin, which has quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix, running backs Tyrion Davis and Eric Gray, wide receivers Jadon Haselwood, George Pickens, Dominick Blaylock, Jalen Curry and Jacoby Pinckney, and tight end Ryland Goede. Defensively, it’s linebackers Marcel Brooks, De’Gabriel Floyd and Owen Pappoe, cornerbacks Marcus Banks, Jaydon Hill, DJ Turner II, Woodi Washington, Bobby Wolfe, and safeties Demani Richardson and Brian Williams.

Team Dynamite has quarterbacks Max Duggan and Ty Evans, running backs Sean Dollars, Chris Tyree, and Austin Jones, wide receivers Bru McCoy, Braedin Huffman-Dixon, Maurice Massey, Marcus Washington and Jameson Williams, and tight end Michael Martinez. On defense it’s linebackers Shammond Cooper, Lance Dixon and Tristan Sinclair, cornerbacks Jeffery Carter Jr., Jeremiah Criddell, Elias Ricks, and Mykael Wright, as well as safeties Nick Cross and Jalani Williams.

Team Overdrive has quarterbacks Brian Maurer and Spencer Rattler, running backs Jase McClellan and Kenny McIntosh, wide receivers Trejan Bridges, Jaylen Ellis, Arjei Henderson, Frank Ladson and Theo Wease, as well as tight end Austin Stogner. The defense has linebackers Bryton Constantin and Aeneas Dicosmo, cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson, Jordan Clark, Chester Kimbrough and Derek Stingley, safeties Kyle Hamilton, Josh Sanguinetti, and Quinten Johnson.

Team impact has quarterbacks Graham Mertz and Ryan Hilinski, running backs Noah Cain and Zachary Evans, wide receivers Colby Bowman, Kyle Ford, Jeremiah Payton and Lance Wilhoite, as well as tight end Jude Wolfe and athlete Mark-Antony Richards. The defense has linebackers Kalen Deloach, Justin Flowe and Nick Jackson, cornerbacks Jaden Davis, Trent McDuffie, Cameron Smith, Chris Steele and Salim Turner-Muhammad, and safeties Jordan Battle and Keontra Smith.

The Lineman Challenge begins Monday, and the Lineman 1-on-1 finals are Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET.

The nation’s No. 1-overall recruit, defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, will be on hand, as will five-star defensive linemen Nolan Smith (Georgia commit) and Zachary Harrison. Defensive tackles Ishmael Sophser and Travon Walker (Georgia commit) will be trying to wreck shop inside.

But it won’t be easy, as six five-star offensive linemen will be trying to stop them. They include Pierce Quick (Alabama commit), Clay Webb, Kardell Thomas (LSU commit), Darnell Wright, Wanya Morris (Tennessee commit), and Kenyon Green (Texas A&M commit).

Oklahoma has the most commits attending.

The Sooners have an impressive seven commits. Alabama is next with six. LSU has five, and while Florida State, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Penn State have four. All schools with four or more are Nike schools, with the exception of Notre Dame.

Auburn is after a 2nd quarterback in the 2018 class and have set their sights on current Penn State commit 5* Justin Fields.

It hasn’t always been clear exactly how many quarterbacks Auburn plans on taking in the 2018 class. For most of this cycle, the thought has been one quarterback and possibly an athlete who would get a shot at QB but could change positions if needed. However, it became clear Saturday that Auburn will in fact pursue two quarterbacks in this class when this happened:

That is current Penn State commit 5* QB Justin Fields. You don’t offer 5* QBs committed to other schools if you aren’t in the market for a quarterback yourself. Obviously the first question then is how does this affect 4* Joey Gatewood who has been committed to Auburn since December 2015. According to Benjamin Wolk over at SECCountry, Gatewood was made well aware of the fact that Auburn would want another QB in this class and the staff apparently has promised to stay in constant communication with him about possible offers and who they are pursuing.

So why a second quarterback? Well first off the Tigers entered spring practice with six guys at that spot and are down to four already after Tyler Queen transferred to West Georgia and John Franklin III moved to WR. That would still mean Auburn should have five guys on roster next year at that position counting Gatewood but I suspect Auburn’s QB attrition isn’t over yet. Chances are good one of Jarrett Stidham, Sean White or Woody Barrett will not be on Auburn’s roster in 2018. If Stidham is the hero we have all been waiting for then he will more than likely make a jump to the NFL after the 2017 season. If not or he just decides to stick around for at least two seasons then chances are good Sean White would look to pursue opportunities elsewhere as a graduate transfer considering he has already proven he can be successful in the SEC. Finally, with Malik Willis’s impressive spring there’s a chance Woody Barrett will find himself at the bottom of the depth chart in 2017 and with more QB talent coming in next season, he might decide to look for better opportunities elsewhere.

Bottom line is after the last two seasons, you can bet Gus Malzahn does not want to be shorthanded at the QB spot. If Gatewood is ok with a second QB in this class then Auburn has a chance to really solidify this position for the future. Especially if that 2nd QB ends up being Justin Fields who Auburn feels like they have a legitimate shot at despite his longtime commitment to Penn State. Also watch out for guys like 4* Gerry Bohanon, 3* Jarren Williams, 3* James Foster, Cordell Littlejohn, and a wildcard name I am throwing in, Demarcus Irons. The hunt for a second quarterback will be an interesting storyline to follow in the 2018 cycle.

Offers

Justin Fields wasn’t the only prospect to land an offer this week, far from it. I said before that you should expect plenty of offers to start flying out during the evaluation period when coaches can hit the road, well that’s exactly what happened this week. By my count the Auburn coaching staff sent out 15 offers with 10 of them going to 2019 & 2020 recruits. Chances are good that I might have even missed a few or more have gone out since this post was submitted. Here’s who, as of right now, I know has received an Auburn offer this past week.

3* S Charlie Thomas - Thomas is only rated by 247 right now but that will change. He’s a great athlete who pulls double duty for his team playing WR and S but his future at the next level is on defense. Great tackler with a nice frame and great speed. Expect Auburn to be a player in his recruitment.

3* CB JaKorey Hawkins - Read/heard a lot of hype about this kid but had not watched his film until he landed an AU offer last night. I get the excitement. Hawkins is a 6’0” almost 190 lb CB with great instincts, elite speed and is a strong tackler. I suspect this kid’s recruitment is really going to take off in the next few months.

3* DE Patrick Joyner Jr (FSU Commit) - Joyner was one of FIVE South Dade players AU offered yesterday. He’s currently committed to the Noles so it will be interesting to see if AU becomes a player or not.

3* TE Chris Carter Jr (USF Commit) - Another TE offer is out and this one is to a big bodied athlete out of South Dade High School in Homestead, FL. The Tigers would like to sign at least one TE this class and Carter is a guy to watch moving forward.

3* CB DJ Ivey (MIA Commit) - Ivey is, you guessed it, another South Dade talent. He’s a very long armed DB with potential to be a 6’1” 190-200 lb CB at the next level. Currently he is committed to the Canes.

2019 WR Frank Ladson Jr (UF Commit) - Ladson is another big bodied WR that the Tigers seem to be coveting more recently. He’s 6’4” 170 lbs with great hands and some sky high potential. The big man is an early commit to the Gators.

2019 ATH Tyrique Stevenson (UF Commit) - The final South Dade offer went out to Stevenson who is also a current Florida commit. Stevenson could end up at WR or CB at the next level but my guess is he plays CB with his skillset.

2019 WR Marcus Washington - Auburn also offered a trio of players out of Trinity Catholic in St. Louis, MO. Washington makes it all look so easy and effortless while embarrassing DBs and scoring TDs. This kid is going to be a highly coveted recruit in next year’s class.

2019 ATH Isaiah Williams - Williams plays QB for Trinity Catholic but will probably end up at WR at the next level. Human joystick is an overused way of describing players but I don’t think there’s a better way of explaining how this kid plays. Elite athlete that will be recruited by every major power in the country next year.

2019 LB Shammond Cooper - This Trinity Catholic team is absolutely loaded. Cooper is a fun LB to watch on film. He diagnosis plays quickly and can fly to the ball. Expect a lot of teams to be visiting this school over the next year and half.

2019 WR Ramel Keyton - This kid might have the best hands in the 2019 class. He doesn’t have elite speed or size but he has enough of both to match with his elite catching ability to be a big time prospect. He’s one of my early favorites of the 2019 class.

2019 WR Trey Knox - Knox is teammates with 2018 AU RB target Master Teague so expect AU’s coaching staff to make plenty of visits to Murfreesboro over the next 2 seasons. He’s a big bodied WR that is hard to bring down and uses his size well to shield off defenders and score TDs.

2019 DT Ishmael Sopsher - Good chance this kid ends up the #1 OVR player in the country in the 2019 class. 6’4” 305 lb monster up front that can slide out and play end or cause havoc at DT. I believe LSU and Alabama are the early favorites.

2020 RB Jaylan Knighton - I believe AU is his first Power 5 offer though not 100% sure on that. Obviously offering a kid that is a rising sophomore means the staff sees some serious potential in this kid.

2020 DT McKinnley Jackson - Jackson was a terror last year as a freshman at George County in Lucedale, MS. Ole Miss and Auburn have both jumped into the race early.

247’s Keith Niebuhr put together a list of the best bets to join the 2018 class. He also has another slideshow up detailing every player AU has offered with a note on their recruitment.

I have written a bunch about Auburn’s DT recruiting this year and have talked about a number of instate guys AU could pursue. Well there is another name to add to the list in 3* Allen Love who Auburn is checking out today.

Auburn still leads for 4* LB Zakoby McClain. He appears to be one of Travis Williams’s top targets in the 2018 class.
