Not at all!!! League is the opposite of a story-based game. Champions are meant to represent an archetype in the rift and shout some cool catchphrases. MOST are self contained, a few have interwoven plotlines that can span years. Some character stories get updated over time in the form of short fiction / comics / event based visual novels but most of that content can be looked up online.

'CONVERGENCE' is an Ekko-led platformer game that released in 2023. An accompanying free-to-download comic miniseries was made to supplement the game's story, and it focuses on Jayce, Viktor, Ekko himself & his family -- and how they are all interwoven as the 'struggling genius' archetype in a very flawed system.

Until Viktor appeared – I admit it – he is the only gear comparable to me.” (uses the verb xiāngdāng (comparable) that means match, balance, correspond to). One of my mandarin-speaking friends has also pointed out the wordplay lends itself to double meaning; “He is the only gear to match/that matches mine.”

I might as well say how I learned about TWST and my journey through it so far with my thoughts. Slight spoilers ahead for the following a bit not much.

So to point it out, I learned about it before it’s release in eng on TikTok. I forget who’s video it was but it was like a year prior with the magical archives. I always loved some of the villains concepts as a kid, so this had me excited.

I followed the count down and the website, the pre order/downloads rewards were pretty good and they added more since the goals got hit so fast. Very interested in the fact that I was only taller than one of our main cast (Ortho).

When it came time to pick a hand, I picked Malleus. Maleficent was one of my favourite villains growing up. I don’t regret picking him to start, his CR (ceremonial robes) SR is still on my main team due to strength and Birthday Azul’s duo magic.

The free SSR I didn’t really have much preference, ended up going with Jack and he’s also a main on my team. He’s max on both spells, 2/3 friendships and close to his current max level 88/90. Currently still recovering the expenses in game, but I saved plenty beforehand.

I’ll be honest, I crush on Leona. I see the first years as kids and the second years. Most are taller than me, but I’m gonna be 20 in October so they kids. I totally first was into Malleus and Idia at first, but then book 6 in jp kinda changed things to me personally. Before it I totally would listen to the voice lines and the growl in Leona’s voice already had me. So it switched to being Malleus and Leona rather easily.

As sorta said earlier, I do look up translations for the main story mostly, haven’t looked up the full part 1 of 7 yet though. Most of my experience has been with the eng server, there are events I’m looking forward to for various reasons whether cute or Malleus in a mask (arms on show).

The eng translations in the official game have been, interesting to say the least. Cater got all those hashtags and social media language. Idia saying all his internet slang and the bunch. Epel is fine, he’s a country boy saying country things.

There’d be a lot I’d personally do if I were actually Yuu in there. Might be tempted to do what Ace did to the other Overblots. Not everyone, but a good punch on Jamil and Vil. Perhaps a slap to Leona and someone would need to hold me back from Idia in book 6. Kidnapping already traumatized ppl who were in therapy and starting to work. Plus you took the annoying but kinda lovable flame cat like monster and destroyed the dorm.

I like most of the fandom and try my best to interact. Of course I’ve seen a few accounts that were great on other platforms and then it started to have issues. I just hope most people remember this is an all boys high school.

When it’s ships, there’s plenty of cute ones and ones that make some sense. AppleJack and AppleJuice are pretty cute. ADeuce is a great team over time and plenty holding the other accountable when it counts. As long as it’s not illegal, uncomfy or I really don’t like it for whatever reason. I’m generally fine with the ships, that goes for most things tbh. Cuddles and kisses are typical safe things for all. NSFW is for 18+ characters.

Been a while since I made one, but on TikTok I have a little series of my honest opinions on characters from TWST with numbers to each one so a random number generator can pick who. I don’t have any RSA characters in it, but the staff and Grim are there. So 28 total there in that list and I’ve done 3 total (Deuce, Grim and silver).

I definitely recommend TWST when I’m talking to people about it, of course I warn that you have to pull for characters.

I do my best to use my Genshin pull luck, but I will admit I’ve spent money on this game and not the other. I spent like $40CAD trying to get Fairy Gala Leona. I’ve currently saved up some 10 pull keys for birthday Malleus. I only have Cater, Azul, Ruggie and Lilia for the birthday cards so far. I do the monthly card.

I think I’ll leave this here though, I’ll be sure to share what other item I preordered from AmiAmi in April.

About Obey Me! apparently not being F2P anymore.

I just wanted to say something about this. Because I’ve seen so much outrage in the fandom especially about their recent anniversary celebration.

Sorry if this might end up being long.

It’s just, so many people cry and complain about the game allegedly not being free to play anymore. But that is where the lie is.

And that’s also what will bring down the game a lot faster. Them constantly getting complaints and feeling like they’ll lose their player base will make them start to milk the game out of the last cent a lot sooner then knowing they have a few more years. 

The game is free to play. You download it for free. You play for free. You have to pay nothing and to be honest, if you invest some time you get a lot.

This is a gacha game after all, you also need some luck, but in comparison to a game like Genshin Impact, that a lot of players seemed to have started to pick up as well you get a lot of materials to get the most out of your luck.

I’ve been playing for 432 days and those are all my cards. I haven’t given them a single cent. Did they get a lot of my time? Yes- but I was willing to pay that price.

I’m not trying to show off with that in any way, I just wanted to show that you indeed get a lot. As an F2P.

So it’s a lie saying the game is starting to become Pay to Play. Because it is not.

You don’t have to spend anything if you don’t want to.

Could they have handled the celebrations differently, like letting everyone chose their desired background at the end of the login? Sure- they could’ve done that. But they simply decided not to.

And that is their right as the company paying for the servers you use for free, paying for the artist that do a super good job providing about 14 brand new hand drawn cards per month, plus the voice actors, plus the animations, plus the story writers. That is a lot of work. That’s a new card every two days. They pay for promotions. They pay for all the IT working on the game, programming it, customer support, social media managers. Do you think this is free? Do you think that’s payable with just some advertisement here and there? Fun Fact: It’s not.

Small rant in the rant: A lot of people also make money off of their copyrighted materials and therefore take more income from them. As they would have to pay for usage right to be legally allowed to sell fanart. Just saying :D

How’d you like someone take your character and makes money off of them, not really, am I right? I don’t know why people think it’s okay since it’s a company. Their designers want to have a wage too.

So it is definitely not P2P.

I will however agree that the events are Pay to Win.

And apparently most of you don’t understand the difference of pay to win and pay to play. And listen, there is a big one.

I don’t know why the Obey Me! Fandom seems to think they are entitled to getting every single card that’s been put out there, to find it in their inventory. Like you can even see it and download the art from the Wiki. Heck spend 5 minutes on YouTube and someone uploaded the Devilgram too. The visibility of the Card is not behind a paywall. Is the additional story or animation that cost additional money sometimes behind a pay wall? Yes- and that is ok. 

I don’t know if you noticed, but aside from the Lucifer Paws and Claws UR there is not a single Pop Quiz UR in my cards. Not one. And I got Lucifer’s grinding my ass off in Lonely Devil, spending weeks doing my daily battles. Because that card was worth it to me. In the normal events I can max get the Memory SSR, spending all of my savings on nightmare beforehand. I have like two of those. Two of which we got completely free. Leviathans UR was completely free.  You realize they could’ve converted the points and taken the card from everyone, which tbh was the move I would’ve done but long term the realized it would make them lose more people and therefore money. Amos UR+ was completely free. Lucifer’s raindrop card I just got in this rerun, spending all of my savings from the past two months or more. Mammons was my guaranteed BDay card. 3 of those completely free so to say. The 14 were all I got with 432 days of playtime. That’s about a card each month. Doesn’t seem that much anymore don’t you think? Also most of the gacha cards I got from after they raised the odds to 3%. That also needs to be mentioned. They did that. 2 are character birthdays. Again with savings and time you got them. All the old cards I got doing that free pull you get every two days. That’s 4 of them as well. Only 8 of them being from limited gachas, in about 1 and a half years of playing.

But especially in gachas you should know that you can’t have everything. I don’t know why people got that impression? I don’t have every card that comes out because I don’t pull on every nightmare. I use the time there is a character I don’t like to save up. And with Obey Me! you can save up a lot.

Bringing up Genshin again: It’s fandom seems to be aware that as a Free to Play you just can’t get every character, and they seem to be fine with it. They save and manage their resources. I’ve been playing since 4 months and I have 2 5 star characters and one 5 star weapon. 2 of those I didn’t want and lost the 50/50. But that’s just how it is. I enjoyed what I got since I only spend my time how it is worth it to me.

I have to admit I had a lot of time to spend on games and if you don’t you won’t get as much, but that’s also normal. OM dailies take about 10 minutes and you get your 18 DP and can work on your cards. That is a lot to save up. And so far I pretty much got every card I wanted as long as it wasn’t an event card. And I could get those too if I invest even more time. I am just simply not willing to.

There is too much to do in this game already for me to keep up. So I really can’t understand what more you could ask for. I am home all day long and I can’t keep up with everything, so why are people complaining about not getting everything? There is so so much to get. Just focus on what you want and don’t turn into miniature Mammon’s that just want everything. And also like: Have you noticed? Most of my cards aren’t even close to being fully leveled. What do you want to do with even more of them? That won’t bring you anywhere?

But anyways I’m losing track of my own rambling where were we?

The fact that people here seem to confuse Pay to Play and Pay to Win, that was actually all I wanted to ramble about. 

Manage your resources and you get a lot. If you want an F2P game that has no aspects to generate money? Well go make one. Teach yourself how to do everything, consider how much time you spend on all that before even starting. And then not getting a single cent back. 

I also probably forgot half of what I wanted to say again, my body can’t keep up my big brains idk.

you waited patiently in the among us lobby. cyan “Watergirl” (aka Katara) joined the lobby, and blue “Sock” (aka sokka) followed after, and they also joined up on the discord server. then came orange “Avatar” (aang), green “soupy” (suki), and finally black “sifu” (zuko).

“yellow’s sus,” sokka said in the discord server. you were yellow.

“but the game hasn’t even started yet,” aang said innocently, earning a few laughs.

‘orange is sus’ sokka typed in the among us chat.

“sokka! no!” aang gasped.

“guys i’m starting the game,” you said as you pressed start. everyone muted their mics.

the game started, saying “there is 1 imposter among us” and that you were a crewmember. you went straight to admin, swiping your card. you went about with your tasks and ended up in electric, but spotted orange’s dead body. you quickly reported, going into a meeting.

“where was the body?” suki asked

“well where was everyone?” you asked suspiciously.

“i was in navigation,” katara said. “suki was there with me.”

“yeppers,” suki said.

“i was in security,” zuko said.

“hm. interesting. sokka?” you asked.

“comms,” sokka said back.

“well, the body was in electric. i’m sus of black because the vent from electric goes to security or medbay,” you explained.

“well i was alone with zuko earlier and he didn’t kill me,” sokka defended him.

“fine we’ll skip,” you said.

“y/n’s sus for accusing me,” zuko accused.

“i trust y/n!” suki defended you.

“as you should,” you replied.

everyone skipped, so no one was ejected. everyone muted their mics again.

you traveled back down to electrical because you never got to do your download task. black followed you in, causing you to panic. then, cyan waltzed in, so you felt safe. you knew katara would protect you. you did your task in peace but when you were done, black was gone, leaving you and cyan.

you started to make your way out, when suddenly cyan pulled a glock on you, leaving you dead. she vented away into medbay.

“sifu was not the imposter,” appeared across the screen, leaving the crewmembers defeated.

all at once, the ghosts unmuted, unleashing their rage.

“KATARA, HOW COULD YOU?!”

“I TRUSTED YOU, YOU SNAKE!”

and so on.

the yelling died down after a minute and was followed by laughing.

“round two?” you asked, in which everyone responded yes to.

you started the game, and you were a crew member yet again, and the screen said there was 1 imposter among the group. you mosied on down to admin, swiping your card, and then sprinted over to reactor, quickly passing by electrical. you wanted to avoid that god awful place for as long as you could. you noticed black in security and cautiously made your way to him, looking at the cams for a second. you didn’t see any suspicious activity, so you started to leave. black followed. panic set in.

“oh my god oh my god he’s going to kill. he wants revenge,” you said to yourself, fearing for your life.

you quickly ran towards cafeteria, ready to call an emergency meeting as he continued to follow you, when suddenly sokka reported cyan’s body, calling a meeting. everyone who was alive unmuted.

“ZUKO WHY WERE YOU FOLLOWING ME,” you yelled immediately.

“i wanted to team up,” zuko said calmly.

Character Bios and FAQ

To start this blog AND this post on a right note, I’m finally posting on tumblr the character bios, which means you can now access to the information from each member of the cast of DDR:LF, which was previously only available in amino. You can find them in this post.

As for the other part, I wrote a FAQ with the main sort of questions there could be about the fangan. Feel free to give it a read here if you want to know about some basic stuff about the project, and if you still have doubts, please do send an ask! I’ll gladly answer it ^^

WIPs of CGs

You didn’t think that the only drawing I was working on were sprites, right?

In today’s post, here are some CGs WIPs that I didn’t get around to finish yet (since their priority is below the character sprites, but it’s a nice change instead of doing sprites 24/7).

First, the pre-trial CGs!

There are some expressions/positions that I might be willing to change, although that’ll come in later when I gotta sit down to finish these. But yeah, later. (Also, just to be clear, I drew these waaay back, so the designs might not match the current ones).

In a trial, depending the type of chapter, the 1st CG and 3rd one will switch places. The one that appears last will be the one that contains the protagonist whose POV we are witnessing.

Second, one of every prologue’s main CGs. “The killing game has begun!”

Looks of doubt and deceith are flying across the room! Who will make it through the end of the day? And who’ll be left behind~?

It might seem pretty basic without them being colored, but hopefully it’ll look better in the future!

Animation Tests

Man, this was a lot of fun to work on, and it was all worth it! I hope you all enjoy these as much as I did while trying to materialize these concepts!

#1 - Prologue Title Card

Every chapter of this story has a title card, just like the original danganronpa games. In the case of DDR:LF, this is more or less what each card will look like.

It’s kinda basic; elements being added to the screen here and there, as well as some silhouettes appearing.

What are these silhouettes, you might ask? It’s none other than the cast of the fangan, but it’s not just anybody who’s randomly picked. The silhouettes belong to the victims and the murderers of the current chapter, so for example, chapter 1 will have the silhouette of the 1st victim and the 1st murderer, but it’ll be modified enough for the silhouette to not be easily recognizable; nobody wants to get spoiled the deaths right at the start of the chapter, right?

Of course, the prologue is an exception... maybe.

A bit of the BGM was done by me, while some other elements of it were taken off from royalty free sound effects/melodies websites.

#2 - Pixel Execution

As you all know, there’s always a pixel animation that starts off an execution. I have that too, of course! and in order to avoid spoilers + show you what I was able to do, I put myself in the place of the culprit. (I swear I didn’t kill off anyone yet... only after the fangan has started I’ll be considered guilty).

The background music was also composed entirely by me, although in the future it might change- but I don’t really know for certain, so get used to this for now :)

#3 - Execution style test

I’ve recently downloaded the program Live2D, and what for? For executions, no less! After trying it for a while, I’ve concluded that it’d simplify my job a lot more than if I used sony vegas for animating the executions (not to mention it looks smoother with this new one).

For this test, I’ve used Seiji as my puppet. It might be simple, but it was to test out the limits of the program. It turned out really good imo! So I’ve decided to use Live2D to animate the executions (or at least, do most parts of them with it). I learnt some stuff while experimenting around with the program, so next time I’ll finish these sort of things even faster probably.

Also I put it on loop because a 2 second video is rather sad.

GUI Design

Now, I'll admit that I'm not the best at GUI design, but I tried my best to come up with my own design for the fanganronpa's interface, which I made based on a water-ish looking theme. The (not final) result of that is the picture below.

In case that you’re wondering, no, this isn’t any sort of canon conversation. It’s just the phrase I could come up with.

And yes, the background is from V3; I don't have any backgrounds at all for the project yet lol.

The sun and the fish on the top right corner will change depending on the time of day; but that's something that I'll keep to myself until the moment I start posting the story.

I have conflicted feelings with this GUI though, I don't know if I like it or not. It looks somewhat good but still off at the same time? Although it might just be me. If anyone has any feedback or suggestion for the GUI's design, the inbox is always open to receive such help!

So what's next?

Currently, I have loads of assignments at college, so it's kinda hard to make a balance between the project, social life and college work. However, the project is something that won’t stop.

The fangan has only one member, which is me of course; that means it’s going at a slow pace. I'm willing to make a recruitment for help, but that’ll be later once I have the basics to let someone else help me. If you’re willing to volunteer for this project, keep heads eyes up for the day I call out for help.

In the past, I tried to learn how to program with unity, but it’s hard to follow it up when the free tutorials are scattered here and there. When I have free time and everything art-related has been set up, I might try to pick it up again. I say might because I’m gonna start a tiny course for unreal engine at college. Maybe with the basics that they teach there, I’ll be able to do a better/quicker job than if I did it with unity (which I have 0 experience with). But the future is uncertain, so I’ll be the judge of that once I’m done with that course!

With that being said... as of now, the next objectives for the project (not ordered by priority) are the following:

Finishing Default Sprites.

I only have 7 default sprites done out of the 16 students, and I’m already working on the 8th. Half-way there?

Concept Art for each Room/Place.

While I have written down all the places in each dome, there are some that I need to draw the concept of the place, since the idea in my mind keeps changing them, I should settle them down.

Finishing Writing the Prologue and the Basics of Chapter 1.

I mean I already have like a half of these two things or more, but since I keep changing it, they never get any actual progress. Maybe I should learn to let it be as it is lol.

Creating 3D Assets.

Of course, I’ll make the 3D models for the rooms and props... well, I might do them; that is if I can’t find anyone that can make them. Pros of this is that I can do things exactly how I want them; cons are that it takes time and I’m not an expert in 3D modeling.

Trial GUI.

Class trials in danganronpa have a different GUI than the one used outside of them. We have a beta for the general GUI up there, now we need one for the class trial’s as well!

Concept Art for... a Trial Thing.

It’s no surprise that there are special things in fanganronpas, such as making changes to certain game mechanics, or creating completely new ones. The one I’m refering to in this case is a change to an already existing mechanic in the DR games. Can you guess which one it is~?

During the first year of birthdays, I drew some sketches for the characters; those are the base for their future splash art.

Recruiting Volunteers for the Project.

Obviously, I can’t do everything in this project by myself. In the future, once I have made a base for every ground of the project, I’ll recruit people that can work from there. Artists (GUI,CG and Sprite), Compositors, and 3D modelers are the ones that I’ll be looking for in this recruitment. In an even-later recruitment, I’ll make a casting call for voice actors as well. Please be patient though!

ooooo what were your favourite places you visited or things you did in amsterdam ... ?!

a few ppl asked me this so here’s a list of some places + tips ! keep in mind i just visited once, i’m not an expert. research the places you want to visit (i did this + watched some Youtube vlogs lol)

Van Gogh museum - i loved seeing his works in person! i did not realize how much texture some of his paintings have. like for example the famous sunflowers, i’ve always just seen prints of it and ofc those are going to look really flat. (save yourself from standing in a long line for tickets and buy one online + reserve the time you plan on getting there. preferrably in the morning and on a weekday bc there will be less ppl)Stedelijk museum - i have to admit i enjoyed this one a little more because of the diversity and variety of works, and there weren’t a lot of ppl there. (i also bought the ticket for this one online but i don’t think you have to, it’s not as popular/busy as the Van Gogh)for both museums you can get an audio guide. the one at the Van Gogh is 5eur, and at the Stedelijk it’s free. how i got there by public transport was with trams 2 or 5, stop Van Baerlestraat. the museums are right next to each other.Horticus Botanicus, the botanical garden - cute place, also cute gift shop! i loved just sitting on a bench, drawing, surrounded by plants. there’s also a smaller greenhouse with butterflies. i didn’t visit their cafe but i heard it’s good. ofc the outside gardens are not in bloom at this time of year so if you’re visiting later during spring or summer they probably look amazing.you can get there by trams 9 or 14, stop Mr. Visserplein.Openbare Bibliotheek - public library! it’s free. i went there when i was super tired from walking around and spent 3 hours on the 6th floor relaxing and drawing. it’s pretty peaceful, you will be mostly surrounded by students studying. there’s a nice view of the city from one side of the room that’s just windows, if you want to take a pic too :)it’s close to the Centraal station so you can just walk there if you’re in that area.Athenaum boekhandel - i didn’t look at their books, but the magazines !!! the beautiful ~indie mags~ that i can’t find in Belgrade. I bought 032c, Flow and Printed Pages. i didn’t know if anyone would be interested in this place but i’m including it. a lot of transportation gets you to the one located at Spui square, but i used trams 2 and 5.Vegan junk food bar - i’m not vegan but this had good reviews and yeah, it’s so gooood. you can only pay with a credit card though! i didn’t know this, only had cash with me but the server still arranged for me to be able to pay. kind ppl.i walked there from the Van Gogh museum bc it's not far.Umaimon - Japanese food. i had one of their ramen bowls.Kantjil & De Tijger - i grew up with Indonesian food so i have high standards for Indonesian restaurants, but the dish i had was good! The portion was just a little too small for me (but then again i was really hungry after walking around).Van der Linde - art supplies store! I like that you can browse by yourself and the staff doesn’t bother you lol.Vondelpark - near the museums!Keizergracht, Prinsengracht, Herengracht - strolling around these canals was lovelyanother thing i loved was just….being in public transport! this will not be anything special for most ppl, but i loved listening to 5 different languages during one tram ride haha. i don’t live in a very diverse place, nor a place with such efficient public transportation.

I visited some more places but these stood out to me! And ofc there were spots I visited and didn’t stick around long like the Dam square because it was just too crowded/touristy for me.

tips:-save all the places you want to visit on the Google Maps on your phone/tablet and then download the offline map of Amsterdam in the app. this was how i navigated the city. it shows you where you are if your location is on. it’s amazing.-pay attention to where you’re walking/standing!!! don’t block the path for ppl on bicycles.-when using the tram, enter either on the first door or the last double doors. i learned this the hard way lmao. also always check in and out with your transport card.-if you’re shopping in a supermarket they don’t have bags to give when you’re paying for stuff (well, at least the ones i’ve been to didn’t. Amsterdam is really good about plastic bags, i don’t think i’ve used any while there!) or you have to pay for a plastic bag. so just in case you can bring a tote bag for groceries, that's easy to carry in a backpack or a bag.

TikTok has been sucked into the China-US security war

In the last two years, TikTok has risen to be one of Facebook's primary competitors. The social media platform has attracted 2 billion downloads worldwide, with 80 million in the US alone. Admittedly, those numbers fall way short of Facebook’s 190 million US users - but it is growing steadily - and it is clear that Facebook wants a piece of the pie.

Luckily for Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, the consensus is that its ties to China make TikTok a privacy nightmare. Article 7 of China's National Intelligence Law, which was passed in 2017, states that "any organisation or citizen shall support, assist, and cooperate with state intelligence work in accordance with the law, and maintain the secrecy of all knowledge of state intelligence work".

That legislation leaves little to the imagination. Even the director for cybersecurity and data privacy at Huawei previously admitted that the law can be used to "force organisations and individuals to provide assistance with work relating to state security".

The potential for TikTok to perform covert espionage on behalf of the Chinese Communist party results in an unpalatable security risk. For Facebook, it creates the opportunity to encourage direct government intervention that would allow it to dominate its competitor.

The government of India recently banned TikTok on national security grounds. Now Facebook is drumming up nationalist feelings in an attempt to make US president Donald Trump do the same. "China is building its own version of the internet focused on very different ideas," Zuckerberg warned last Wednesday, "and they are exporting their vision to other countries."

Despite the patriotic rhetoric, the reality is that Facebook is focussed solely on eliminating its competition so that it can fill the vacuum left behind. If the manoeuvre is successful, it would let the company roll out a TikTok clone called Collab.

The signs that TikTok could be about to be excluded from Western markets are obvious. The Huawei ban in the US - and more recently the UK - reveals a glimpse into the app's potential future. The writing is on the wall and if the ban were to occur Facebook could further monopolise the US market - a result that can hardly be called a win for consumer privacy.

Despite the privacy concerns that follow Facebook everywhere it goes - and the fact that the company is defending itself on Capitol Hill for the third time in two years - the Trump administration appears keen to prop up Facebook's dominance. At the weekend, Trump announced that he is indeed preparing to ban TikTok in the US. This should, perhaps, be unsurprising considering Facebook's track record of providing US intelligence agencies with the same kind of espionage capacities that TikTok is accused of providing to China.

Unfortunately for Zuckerberg, even Trump's intervention may not be enough for Facebook to win the TikTok battle. This is because Microsoft has just announced that it is in talks with ByteDance to acquire the US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand parts of TikTok's business. If that deal is successful, Microsoft would remove the Chinese threat from TikTok. And, with Microsoft in control of TikTok US, user data would be held on US servers and no longer at risk of China's security law. There would no longer be a legitimate reason for the US TikTok ban, much to Facebook's annoyance.

Microsoft is another company that has proven itself agreeable to working with US intelligence. As a result, it seems likely that this outcome would be acceptable to the Trump administration. After all, US intelligence is unlikely to care who owns TikTok as long as it is a US company upon which it can serve warrants and gag orders.

TikTok understands that to compete in the US it is going to need to put international concerns regarding China to bed. Selling to Microsoft would be one option, but TikTok appears to have another card up its sleeve. At the end of last week, its CEO, Kevin Mayer, announced that the firm is going to open a Transparency and Accountability Center that would give third parties the opportunity to analyse the code that drives TikTok's algorithms. He also claimed that the center would allow for a transparent analysis of its data practices.

Providing this kind of transparency is an extremely strong move. It could theoretically be a game-changer. If TikTok can successfully use transparency to create trust in the platform, a US ban would be understood to be political and economic - as opposed to motivated by security concerns. But at the moment Mayer's statements are just claims. While terms like "open" and "real-time" are impressive, we will have to wait and see what TikTok actually brings to the table. Only then will we be able to make concrete decisions about security and privacy on the platform.

The big question for TikTok is whether it can actually do enough to create trust in its platform. Can it provide real evidence that it is not being compromised by Chinese interests? And can it do these things in time to prevent itself being banned, handing the US market to Facebook on a silver platter.

Only time will tell, but it certainly appears that TikTok's best option for beating Facebook may be to cash-out by selling to Microsoft, however reluctantly.
