Empires season 1 Scott x Dsmp child dragon reader
[Pt1]||Pt2
Running. That's all you could afford to do. Stopping meant wasting time and wasting time meant you'd get caught, and you can't get caught here. Not when all the adults are untrustworthy. You've made that mistake once, but never again.
Taking a quick glance behind you, you could see him . The Baron of the land Dream and he was gaining. With a small yelp leaving you you hurriedly tried to pick up pace to escape the once was bounty hunter. You couldn't go back with him, you absolutely refused. He was the one who messed up your wings. A sword right through the webbing of your wings , making it almost impossible for you to fly again.
Spotting a nether portal you hoped at least in the nether you'd be faster. You'd have the advantage compared to the bounty hunter behind you. A crossbow bolt whizzed past you as you ran your hope for the advantage you'd have in the nether only growing. You were only a foot away when you tripped rolling to a stop just outside the portal's boundaries. Dream stood In front of you the mask he wore seeming to contort into an inhumane smile. As he loaded a crossbow bolt you suddenly felt something clawed grab your hands and suddenly you were pulled through the portal harshly.
Now this certainly isn't the first time you've traveled by portal and usually you hold up just fine, but this time you felt sick. And as you were dragged out of the portal you rolled only to end up face first in snow. You sat up quickly, blinking hurriedly , there's no snow in the nether. Clearly toubaren where you thought.
Looking around it was gorgeous, a city built, into, around, and on a snow covered mountain. You were freezing. Your origin was from the nether, being in the over world was challenging enough without the cold , the cold makes it so much worse. Looking around you notice sheep. Certainly no one would mind if you just slaughtered a few and made yourself something cozy.
You moved to take a step but something caught your ear. Talking coming from above the portal entrance. You sucked in a breath aiming to keep yourself quiet as you reached for the enchanted iron sword on your hip. The moment footsteps crossed your path you pointed the sword at them.
At the end of your sword a blue haired bird hybrid (?). Honestly you weren't sure he had antlers and elven ears. You wouldn't know . Your sword was pointed up just below his chin aimed at the back . He looked bored as you did so .
Rolling his eyes he sighed. "Your stance is off if you're going to mug someone especially a king do it right
" he huffed, pulling out his own sword. Using his own sword he maneuvered your launching it from your grip and into the snow. As you stood baffled he looked you over, you couldn't be anymore than maybe ten. What were you doing here near the Portal?
Upon further inspection he noted your horns, wings, tail and the small patches of scales that littled your face. A dragons child? That certainly had to be a myth. The only person who'd even had the chance of hatching an egg was Gem and even then dragons can't seem to make it out of any kingdom except the Crystal Cliffs without being hunted into near extinction.
He stared and you stared back. When you finally deterred him as not a threat you brought your foot back and kicked him in the shins. No adult is trustworthy, certainly not one who puts a sword to you. He yelled, his sword suddenly disappearing as he dropped to assess his shins. "What the hell kid!" He shouts at you .
You huff turning to run before your picked up by the back of your shirt. Far too close to your wings for your liking "Let me go! I'll kill you, I'll do it! You bird brained bastard!" You shouted back struggling in the grasp.
Scott didn't like that, you're a dragon you're meant to be harder to pick up. He also hated the way your wings looked, tattered as if someone had run a blade through thin leather. "Calm down there's going to be a snow storm, I don't want you to freeze so you can stay in my castle." He states plane and simple. Thinking about it what's he gimg to tell Jimmy, better yet what is he going to tell his sibling Xornoth.
If anyone's better equipped to deal with a child from the Nether it's Xornoth. But he knows Xornoth is out late for the night. As he started to walk he picked up your sword only making you angrier. You hiss as your pulled along despite your struggles.
No adult is trustworthy.
Much to Scott's dismay he's able to carry you back with relative ease despite the struggling. Once he'd gotten you inside he set you down. Making the door was closed and locked behind him he didn't want snow getting in later.
The moment you were set down you distanced yourself heavily though the warmth of the room made you want to curl up. While warm it was still colder than temperatures you're used to honestly you could if given the chance, curl up and fall asleep on the floor.
Scott looked at you worriedly. He didn't like how frightened you looked , Much less how violent you seemed , he wanted to know what happened. Thinking about you seemed possibly as stubborn as his brother, maybe even as stubborn as Jimmy. Maybe he could offer you food? Slowly he walked towards the kitchen , the way you stared at him with murderous intent never seemed to leave.
"Hey, kid. You hungry? I've got soup, it's warm and you'll probably feel a little less sleepy "
You glared a growling building up in your throat. "Like hell I want food from a fuckin adult. You're probably out to poison me or I don't use me for some kind of gain!" You shout
"I'm not some adult, I'm Scott smajor, you can call me Scott if you like but the insults just won't do" Scott stares humming trying to figure out what you might eat, you've got to eat something preferably, something warm to keep your body temperature up. "Would you like to help me cook or just watch me cook so you can ensure that I haven't poisoned any of the food or anything of that manner?"
You look around then at the bird king himself. "If I don't know what it is you'll tell me what it is right ?" You asked, still opting to keep your distance the best you could. You were skeptical he hadn't done anything hostile towards you yet .
He nodded as he started pulling out a pan or two, due to your draconic nature he knew you'd prefer something with meat. His final decision was spaghetti. You both are in silence, you sat glaring at him the whole time.
After you finished you were tempted to ask for more though that would show how weak you were. Hesitantly you sighed looking over to him without malice for the first time. " Could I get some warmer clothes please" you huffed through strained teeth . The food warmed you up but it wasn't enough.
He nodded, walking over to you and offering you a hand , you don't take it but you filed him. "My sibling enjoyed wearing a plethora of clothes , if anything is to your liking please wear it, I'll be outside the room if you need anything. "
You looked at his as he left , he was just allowing you food, and clothes. What the hell is wrong with him? It made your heart all fuzzy. It was nice being actually taken care of .you found yourself a pain for warmer clothes folding your clothes and holding them to your chest.
As you exited the room Scott was there just he said he'd be. Scott raised a brow smiling at what you wore
"You look good in that, how about we find you a room?" He states and you nod hesitantly. His intentions are unknown to you and you don't know if they intend to get worse
He leads you to the spare room smiling " Could I know your name, little one? " He asks only to be met with another glare form you as you settle into the room. "Fair enough" he states closing the door and giving you time.
You sigh as the doors closed. You set your things on a dresser then flop onto the the bed, you've never laid in a cozier bed. You have the room to spread your wings and get comfortable . It's amazing. You get cozy and soon enough you're falling asleep. For the first time in a very long time, you're letting your guard down. As you start to fall asleep, Scott walks into the room. He's holding a plate of cookies. He doesn't seem to mind the fact that you're starting to fall asleep. In fact, he places the cookies on a nearby dresser and gently places a hand in your hair. "Rest easy kid"*
You huff a small churrimg noise escaping by our lisp as Scott ruffles your hair "Y/N." You correct Scott . He spares youba confused glance before it hits him that that's your name .. honestly if he were going to continue to be this nice this could be the only exception you make for an adult. Just for him .

Series Masterlist

‘Tae.. Are you in there?’ Hoseok’s concerned voice surges through the opening of the door.
‘Hyung... I’m so weak, pathetic and lacking of everything.. I couldn't protect my mate..’
‘I let her slip away.. I wasn't and still am not perfect enough.’
‘Hyung.. Let's talk outside. It's stuffy in there. Are you okay?’ Jungkook’s worried.
‘You actually care about me, kiddo?’
‘As if..’
A scoff is followed after.
‘Fine.. Fine.. I do! So.. Please come outside and talk to us..’
‘Kook finally stopped trying to win for once? Cute.’
A smile on Taehyung’s face and pink on Jungkook‘s cheeks.
That teasing remark hits at the side of Jungkook’s ego.
‘Are you going to stay in there forever or what? Are you going to rot in there?’
‘Stop fighting.. I will snap both of your heads off,’ Hoseok has his hands on his hips.
‘Don’t snap my head off, Hyungiee,’ the werewolf bursts out of the door.
‘Now.. What’s wron-’
‘Let’s go watch the sun setting together.. I’m tired,’ he clings onto both of their arms.
‘Does he get more possessive when he’s sad?’Jungkook rolls his eyes, ignoring the elder and communicating with Hoseok.
‘I’m still here,’ the forgotten boy reminds them of his glory.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
‘I grew up in the Kingdom of Narcissus. Over there, we were expected to be perfect. To only care about ourselves and no one else. Not family, friends or anything.. I wasn’t like that though. But, when you’re the black sheep of the flock, that's what you always will be. Regardless of how nice you are or how good of a person you are, your wool is still the same. You’ll never fit in.’
‘And at one point, I became obsessed with being perfect. Now that I realise it. Perhaps my perfectionism was what killed her.’
‘How did she die?’ Hoseok’s blunt - he never enjoyed sugar coating his words.
‘She was killed by another pack..’
‘How is it your fault then?’
‘I insisted she go buy another bunch of berries. Because the ones I had weren't perfect enough,’ tears unconsciously dripped onto the ground.
‘How could you have known the future that was ahead of you? She didn't die because of you, Tae. They killed her. Was it her blood on your hands? No.. It was theirs.’
‘But.. But.. It’s my fault that I made her go to the market that day,’ he chokes on air.
‘It’s not your fault that evil exists in this world..’
‘Let’s say that you win the machine. Would she be happy knowing that you were blaming yourself for her death?’
‘No.. She would hit me in the chest and go: Tae, you silly thing!’ he smiles, a memory from years ago flashing back into his brain.
‘Do you think we’ll have to fight each other to death, for the machine?’ Taehyung keeps eye contact.
‘I won’t kill you, Tae.. Not even for her.’
‘Neither will I.. I refuse to kill you,’ Jungkook’s confident in what he says.
‘Let’s make a pact then. To give up if the final challenge is for us to slaughter each other,’ his tears have dried.
‘I, Jeon Jungkook will not have the blood of either Vampire Jung Hoseok or Werewolf Kim Taehyung.’
‘I, Kim Taehyung promise to never harm both this kiddo and this Hyung over here.’
‘I, Jung Hoseok will never lay a hand on both of these weirdos.’
‘Weirdos?!’ they scream in unison.
‘See.. Weirdos! So nosy!! My earsss!!’ Hoseok covers his ears.
‘You’re the weirdo over here, Hyung..’
‘Woah.. Woah! Now you two are ganging up on me?!!’
‘Come over and suck our blood then! That is if you can catch onto us!’ they both run away.
‘Get over here, you brats!!! I will drain you dry!!!! You probably won’t even taste good!! And for your information vampires don’t drink blood!!’
You have been invited to take a peek of one of Yoongi’s Iconic Looks

👀 Curious about your rant abt Word and Meggy. Also, what are your headcanons for libris for the ask meme 👀
Rant
With Armeggadon it’s not only his entrance into the show’s plot, but also his reveal. As in what he actually looks like. But on top of that: I find secret villain pop-ups annoying. Because they remove the focus from the original villain and make that villain out to be pretty pathetic in comparison. I don’t care how important your ancient evil returned character is to your plot, it isn’t an excuse to water down the villain we have been watching before this new guy has shown up.
Have a mystery villain that appears, fine, but don’t use them to make your central villain either less threatening to pathetic or to redeem the central villain just because there can’t be two villains…or because somehow he suddenly gives a damn about his errand boy-I mean “beloved” son. 🙄
Apparently the writers had stuff planned with him, explaining in DB Academy who he was/is and his history with the war. That sounds interesting, I like that…but in the process Word Paynn has been reduced to an annoyance at best, nonexistent to the conflict anymore at worst. Why can’t he and Armeggadon work together? They have the same goal and the same motivation, and yeah it’ll lead to one screwing the other over in the end…but it gives Word a reason to be a threat still and possibly MORE of a threat.
But no, Word gets his ass kicked then needs rescuing by his ex-friend and then by their children so all four can temporarily beat this ancient evil returned before going back to the status quo (sort of, since Word’s final moments are to cheat at the final challenge of the series for his son then bitch to the judges about why Artha shouldn’t be allowed into the Academy-cause the kid was badly injured at the beginning of the episode…and a hint at redemption for Moordyd going forward) while it’s foreshadowed that Armeggadon is the new major threat to all of them, Moordryd included, who was the puppet he (Armeggadon) was manipulating.
I’m not a fan of this direction with stories. I don’t want a secret mystery villain to take the spotlight from the established villain, followed by the established villain being watered down to be less threatening than the cool new one. Especially when I liked the villain that is being replaced or weakened by this new guy. If they were using it in an attempt to show Word isn’t beyond redemption either, they did a poor job of it.
That’s my rant.
Bonus: Armeggadon’s design is also not great. They were going for ancient battle armor, but it isn’t impressive to me. Makes him look like a hammerhead shark/spider hybrid trying to be a human.

Change the helmet maybe, and he might have a more impressive silhouette. Also a signature dragon. Not the same model of the failed artificial Black dragons scheme Word had in When Darkness Falls.
DB Ask Meme
11. What are your headcanons for X character?
Headcanons on Libris? Well…a lot of them are from my own rewrite project for the show (yes, I have one…but it’s got a twist that lines up with my personal tastes in these things) but one can be applied to that OR the show itself:
Rivett was able to sneak Libris into the Academy through Grey cloaking gear, which made Libris’ colors and texture appearance change so he passed as a hybrid Star-Class of some kind. This was how they got through the Academy and eventually Rivett was able to help Libris evolve.
As for why Libris went through the Academy…probably because Libris is a Black Sheep of the Grey dragons. He thinks differently from them, since he was said to have fought in the original Dragon/Human War. He probably could read the signs as well of another War stirring and agreed to work with Rivett in an attempt to find a way to stop it.
Except much later when he hears the horn, he thinks he was too late and his mind turns to doing what he can to keep the fighting from escalating further. It takes Beau proving he is the reborn Dragon of Legend for Libris to see that all hope is not lost and that war can still be prevented.
If a war actually breaks out later, I think Libris would join the fight again, and this time it would be more devastating because of the sheer size and power of the Evolved dragons like him.

21 Animated Projects We’re Anticipating in 2021
1) Arlo the Alligator Boy (Netflix/Titmouse)
This 2D musical feature film for the streaming service will set up a series (”I Heart Arlo”) about an alligator looking for family in a “Regular Show”-type world. The music blew us away during the preview at 2020′s CTN Expo.
2) Bob’s Burgers: The Movie (Disney/20th Century/Bento Box)
While the Fox show is loved for its humor and heart and not really for its animation, this feature film from the show creator Loren Bouchard will have a glossier look, as Bento Box animates on a feature budget and timeline. Expected in theaters on April 9, 2021.
3) The Boss Baby 2: Family Business (DreamWorks/Universal)
This March, DreamWorks Animation brings the brothers back together — to deal with the new cutthroat boss (baby) in the family.
4) Connected (Sony Animation)
Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie) support Gravity Falls alum Mike Rianda in his feature directorial debut. Rianda’s brand of wacky humor sets this humans vs. robots film up for a great time, if the company can set a release date.
5) Encanto (Disney)
Zootopia’s Byron Howard leads director team Jared Bush and Charise Castro Smith in this musical super power story set in Colombia, coming this fall.
6) Earwig and the Witch (Studio Ghibli/GKIDS)
Goro Miyazaki, son of legendary Hayao Miyazaki and director in his own right, brings Ghibli magic to theaters for the first time in six years. This film differs from its predecessors with stylized cg animation, but the story — an orphaned girl learns she’s the daughter of a witch — promises much of the wonder that one expects of any Ghibli film.
7) Luca (Pixar)
Director Enrico Casarosa debuts with Pixar’s Italian Riviera-set story of friendship between a boy and a boy-shaped sea monster, which arrives this June.
8) Minions 2: Rise of Gru (Illumination/Universal)
We’ve seen Gru’s future and his yellow minions’ past, but finally Illumination highlights the in-between in a villain origin story we hope will be as fun as the first three Despicable Me films.
9) My Father’s Dragon (Cartoon Saloon/Netflix)
It’s a great year for dragon-lovers, with Cartoon Saloon supplying the first of three feature films about these awesome creatures. Director Nora Twomey brings to life a Newberry-winning book, with help from “Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and writer John Morgan. A boy who runs away to Wild Island finds much more than the captive dragon he sought.
10) Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (Netflix/Jim Henson)
Another ambition animated feature from Netflix, Pinocchio sets itself apart from other versions of the folk tale in its look — stop-motion by Jim Henson’s studio — and feel, with Guillermo del Toro’s signature dark brilliance under veteran director Robert Zemeckis’ helm. This will not be very family friendly.
11) Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney)
A warrior seeks the legendary last dragon hundreds of years after those mythical creatures saved her world from the same evil threat they now face. Coming to theaters and Disney+ (for a fee) in March.
12) Robin Robin (Netflix/Aardman)
This animated musical holiday special comes from the minds behind Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. It may be a long way from December now, but we’re ready for some stop-motion Christmas fun, especially when the story follows a bird raised by mice.
13) Ron’s Gone Wrong (Disney/20th Century/Locksmith)
Female-led production company Locksmith brings its first animated feature to life under Disney-owned 20th Century (Fox), “Ron’s Gone Wrong.” Set in a world where every child has its own robot assistant, a boy tries to fix his faulty robot this April.
14) Rumble (Paramount/ReelFX)
Based on a graphic novel by Rob Harrell, this film explores the challenges of a world where humans coach monsters in pro wrestling. Yes, really. We’ll see where it goes in May.
15) Sing 2 (Illumination/Universal)
Buster and his band of musical animals return with visions of stardom, or at least attempts to persuade a certain rockstar to join them in this sequel to the Animals’ve Got Talent film, expected in December.
16) Space Jam: A New Legacy (Warner Bros/WAG)
LeBron James joins the Looney Tunes in this not-quite-sequel to the 1990s classic live-action hybrid film. We’re especially looking forward to prolific voice actor Eric Bauza’s performance as Bugs Bunny, among other Looney favorites!
17) The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (Nickelodeon/Paramount)
After teasing us with seemingly infinite ads for this film, we’ve been waiting some time for the newest SpongeBob feature film in the United States, which arrives on CBS All-Access and video-on-demand services in February. The story of SpongeBob and Patrick’s journey to save the snail-napped Gary has already premiered in Canadian theaters and in other countries on Netflix.
18) Tom and Jerry (Warner Bros/WAG)
The live-action/CG hybrid film bring Tom and Jerry to the big screen and HBO Max this February. When Jerry accidentally crashes “the wedding of the century,” Tom is hired to get rid of the mouse, reigniting the famous rivalry and uncovering a secret plot in the process.
19) Vivo (Sony Animation)
Lin-Manuel Miranda delivers Sony’s first animated musical, about a capuchin monkey with big dreams, this June.
20) Wendell and Wild (Netflix)
“Nightmare Before Christmas’” own Henry Selick returns to stop-motion to direct Netflix’s adventure story of two demon brothers (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) who escape the Underworld.
21) Wish Dragon (Sony Animation)
An old teapot transforms college student Din’s meager life into something fantastic when he discovers Long, a Wish Dragon, inside.

The ATOM Create a Kaiju Contest 3-D: Entry Roundup
You’ve been patiently waiting for the results of the ATOM Create a Kaiju Contest 3-D, and now... you have to wait a bit longer, but at least you’ve got an entry roundup with lots of sketches and a good bit of feedback for all the entrants! My goal is to get the finalists illustrated in a week or two, and after that, the grand prize winner will be announced. But, for now, the official entry roundup! After the cut:
I should note that while I sketched these in the order they were submitted, my scanner saved the documents with random names, so they’re a bit jumbled. You know, just in case you’re like me and would get confused noticing that it’s almost in chronological order but with some entries jumbled around.
@bugcthulhu’s Obsideban was designed as a counterpart to Rohobaron - the Black King to Rohobaron’s Red King, if you will. Or, well, Black Queen in this case, as Obsideban also takes her personality from the “delinquent girl” archetype in Japanese media. Bug’s designs always ooze personality, and I had a lot of fun translating this big, gnarly retrosaur into my own style.
@toothlessloveshiccup‘s Argonox is the first - but far from the last - monster in this breakdown that brings in a bit of fantasy influence to ATOM’s roster. A golden-fleeced ram with a vicious streak, this sheep is both treasure and dragon at once. And while it wasn’t written in the monster’s profile, given the Yamaneon-rich nature of its wool, Argonox might be able to replicate the healing power of the golden fleece too! A very fun mammalian kaiju and excellent entry.
@highly-radioactive-nerd submitted Gunmetal Jeeves, a robot butler who can gigantomax temporarily create a holographic/hard light version of himself to fight kaiju. That detail was a late revision added to the entry before the contest’s deadline, made after the creator realized that ATOM allows for some truly ludicrous bullshit, which is something everyone should exploit when making entries for this in my opinion. Also, this is a robot butler who can size shift. Revel in its awesome absurdity!
Ultranerd submitted Rajasaurus, a dimetrodon-like synapsid kaiju with electric powers. His origin specifies that the electric powers are a result of the volatile nature of the Yamaneon deposits he mutated under, which is an interesting idea. That’s another theme that cropped up a lot in this contest’s entries, actually - people really wanted to play with what Yamaneon can do.
Case in point, @polygonfighter’s Yamaneolith takes the Monolith Monsters homage at the heart of Yamaneon even more apparent. I like the implication that there is a second mineral-based lifeform at the root of this Yamaneon cluster’s anomalous behavior - a parasite, perhaps? It brings up some interesting possibilities.
@ariccio50 submitted Kukulkuzana, and damn is this a cool spin on the body plan of my martians. I made a few changes here and there (splitting its tail into two is probably the biggest one), but tried to keep true to the original design, because holy hell is it gorgeous. The idea that this is a mountain-dwelling creature is really intriguing to me, as it looks like a sea creature, but at the same time, that flexible and low-slung build WOULD work pretty well in mountains, and it’s just the right mix of plausible weirdness that makes for a fun alien design.
@akitymh submitted Aramzados, a Venusian monster that’s basically an organic hot rod car. I like the idea of organic machinery being the gimmick for Venusian kaiju, and Aramzado’s does it subtly enough to not feel like that gimmick is the sole thing going for it. I especially love this monster’s stange, apparently mouth-less blade-beaked face.
@virovac submitted Rurzar and Zar Rider, a Beyonder kaiju and mecha (respecitvely) that were both modified and repurposed by humans reverse engineering Beyonder technology to make, like, a motorcycle-saurus essentially. It is a delightfully absurd concept, and a very, very detailed one (13 pages of description). There’s a dark undercurrent beneath the sillyness, though, as this pair show that humanity might still be following the same path as the Beyonders before them.
@dinosaurana brings us Krangor, a humanoid monstrosity of living kelp! The goal here was to create a Jack Kirby-esque monster dude, complete with the gibberish name and all. He’s also made out of kelp, which feels very classic 1950′s monster-y despite me not being able to think of any monsters that were explicitly made of kelp. I love him.
@kiryuthechimera submitted Genkakurah, a psychic retrosaur with some draconic features. Though his substantial powerset is probably the biggest distinguishing feature of this kaiju (given that most ATOM kaiju pretty much have the same standard powers), what really draws me to him is that reptilian pseudo-beard. It’s just a fun detail!
@glarnboudin submits Tiratola, and see, there’s that fantasy influence again! Even more explicitly dragon-y than Kraydi, Tiratola still manages to toe the line between sci-fi and fantasy enough to fit ATOM as is while still cementing its ties to my own slice of fantasy fiction. Man it’s good I’m doing a Midgaheim book next, huh?
@dragonzzilla submitted Scuttlebutt/Argonautilus, a hermit crab kaiju who lives in/with a hollowed out mecha. That’s a twist I can’t recall ever hearing before, and the idea of a kaiju and a mecha having an equal partnership that doesn’t involve one being grafted to the other is really intriguing to me. A very unique concept!
@evolutionsvoid submitted Fleagor, an enormous flea who has no idea what to do with itself now that there’s no creature large enough for it to parasitize. I love that concept - it takes the core idea of the giant bug kaiju archetype (i.e. unsettling the audience by showing how terrifying small, “insignificant” creatures would be if our sizes were reversed) and really turns it on its head. The name also plays on the Universal Monsters, who were a huge part of 1950′s pop culture thanks to their movies being re-released in that era, so all and all this one is very on brand for ATOM!
@skarmorysilver submitted Lilacorn, another entry that plays up that Midgaheim/ATOM connection. Reinterpreting the mythological unicorn as an Cenozoic wooly rhinoceros-inspired monster gives it a very unique look, both in ATOM and in the general world of unicorns, and she has a bad-girl with a heart of gold personality to boot!
dracosaurus-rex submitted Florasaura, a two-headed plant/retrosaur hybrid monster. I love me some plant monsters, I love me some retrosaurs, and I love me some rhyming the word “flora” with other words that contain similar vowell sounds, so this one has me written all over it!
@downtofragglerock submitted Sauroguana, a delightfully odd flying retrosaur. There’s a great deal of charm to the original illustration that this sketch doesn’t quite capture - it’s a deceptively simple design with a lot of personality in it, and with those unique leg-wings it really doesn’t need a whole lot of frills to stand out.
Draxi submitted Brakan, an unimpressive burrowing retrosaur kaiju whose mastery of illusions allows it to convince other kaiju it’s actually a big, super-powerful badass that’s the ultimate fighter in the universe. It’s a delightful parody of the concept of a fan self-insert god-mode character, with a really fun story built into it to boot!
@quinnred submitted O.N.I.A.C., a mysterious cocooned kaiju whose chrysalis has been turned into an organic computer of sorts by the people studying it, and seems to possess a fairly advanced intelligence for a kaiju. It’s a really bizarre and ominous idea, with built in intrigue given how vague its nature is. Is it just a kaijufied butterfly/moth who got stuck mid transformation? A relative of the Mothmanuds? Something else, perhaps equally alien? Good story potential here.
shadyserpent submitted Vespilitor, a bat/retrosaur hybrid made by the nefarious Spooks Organization. A mercurial prankster whose tendency to stir up trouble never crosses the line into maliciousness, he’s the kind of monster who would make a great foil to a lot of ATOM’s cast. I’d especially like to see him in a prank off with Ahuul - it’d be like Bugs Bunny fighting Daffy Duck, but on a kaiju scale.
@multiversefan submitted the Yamaneon King, a nomadic kaiju whose refusal to settle down causes problems as he stirs up trouble at kaiju sanctuaries all over the globe by showing up unannounced and stirring up the locals. He was basically designed to be a monster that the kaiju sanctuary initiative would struggle to deal with, which is a good idea for a post-ATOM Volume 2 story conflict.
Sir K submitted Jadeera, a kirin kaiju that can actually forcibly convert most of its body to Yamaneon to enter a dormant, statue-like state in a loose homage to King Shisa. Though the fantasy elements are far more present than I usually prefer for ATOM kaiju, I think it should be noted they’re pushed that far for a purpose - a theme in Jadeera’s entry, which continues where its creator left off with their submission to the previous ATOM create a kaiju contest (Yokaigon), is that the world of kaiju is more complicated and challenging than many are willing to accept, which is a theme in ATOM itself. Yokaigon’s more supernatural/occult powers are based on the ghost parascience of my setting, which ATOM has delved into a bit (Pathogen being the big example), so it’s not as out of left field as some might think.
@cerothenull brings us our final entry (unless some got lost thanks to tumblr’s shitty tagging system), the flying spider Naeranti. She’s a kaiju spider who uses silk to make complicate hot-air balloons, more or less, and that’s just delightful. ATOM could always use more spider-monsters, and with a really unique gimmick backing up a wonderfully distinct look, Naeranti is sure to stand out among her fellow giant arachnids.
Well, that’s the roundup! In a week (or two, depending on how much my hand cramps) we’ll have the five finalists, and sometime after that, the grand prize winner!

Heretic/Hexen

I love Doom. I’ve never made an attempt to list my favorite video games in a numerical order, but if I did, Doom would likely be one of the highest, if not #1. I’m also a big fan of the “dark fantasy” aesthetic, so discovering the Heretic/Hexen series was a treat, to say the least.
Released in 1994, Heretic was built using the Doom engine by Raven Software, with John Romero himself having helped the team set up their computers and teaching them the basics of how he would make maps for the game. With this in mind, you’d be forgiven for saying what a lot of reviewers said at the time: this game looks like a Doom reskin with a fantasy theme.

This sentiment mostly applies to the first game, Heretic. But in a sea of other “Doom clones” released at the time, it is definitely one of the more competent ones. You play as Corvus, one of the few surviving elves in a world overtaken by the evil Serpent Riders, who have decided to exterminate all the elves because their magical powers make them resistant to the mind control spells the Serpent Riders use to conquer and subjugate realm after realm on their quest for world domination. Unsurprisingly, Corvus is out for revenge, and the end goal of the game is to hunt down and kill the first of the three Serpent Riders, D’Sparil.
The gameplay in Heretic is more similar to Doom than in the later games, but it does the Doom formula well. Most weapons have a distinct counterpart in the game it is based on: the Elven Wand is your pistol, the Dragon Claw is your chaingun, the Ethereal Crossbow is your shotgun, and so on. They are satisfying to use (save the wand, arguably), and look deliciously fantasy-eque, with beautiful spritework. The levels are split into a familiar structure, featuring three episodes with nine levels each (and two more episodes released as an expansion pack). The enemies are varied, with pretty animations and distinct sounds, and play into the Doom experience very well in that the combinations and locations of enemies in each area lends itself to very different strategies (although “run really fast and blast everyone with the crossbow” rarely fails on most difficulties). The two expansion episodes are considerably more challenging, and will require more quick thinking and ammo, sorry, mana conservation. Definitely a fun romp.

The sequel, Hexen, is where the series starts finding it’s own unique twist on the genre, and is the by many regarded as the “classic” that really put the franchise on the map. Again, you’re playing as a vindictive hero on a quest to liberate their realm from the Serpent Riders. This time it’s Korax, the second out of the three. However, now you’ve got to pick a class. This is the first big difference you’ll notice when starting the game. Corvus is MIA from his last adventure, and instead your choice of protagonist is between Baratus the Fighter, Parias the Cleric, and Daedolon the mage. While the game isn’t an RPG, these characters all have different stats when it comes to running speed and base HP. More importantly, they each have access to their own unique set of weapons. Mana is shared between the weapons, which are now split into green, blue and dual mana types, but they all behave very differently. For example, the fighter’s weapons are mostly of the melee variety and consume mana rapidly only for special attack modes, as they can still be swung without mana. The mage on the other hand uses his bare hands to cast a lot of his spells, but they do not burn through mana nearly as quickly. Unsurprisingly, the cleric is a hybrid, and uses both a spiked club and a mix of magical weapons. An “ultimate” weapon is also available to each class, which must be assembled from parts and consumes both blue and green mana, but has really devastating attacks (the cleric’s “Wraithverge” summons ghosts that scream like banshees and tear every nearby enemy to shreds; it’s just as metal as it sounds)!
Beyond the class differences, the level structure is the other major difference between Heretic and Hexen. Instead of a linear series of levels, each episode is now defined by a hub level with many branching areas that can usually be visited in any order. You need to find key items and activate switches in each one to open the way to the next world, and many areas within each sub-level are also locked until you find the right key/switch in a completely different area. As would be expected, this new spin on the level progression comes with both pros and cons. Few players today will be able to complete the game without ever looking at a walkthrough, and based on some comments I’ve read, this is one of those games that many people in the 90s would only dream of beating on their own. That said, there are very few instances where pulling a switch won’t at the very least give you a short message indicating it’s purpose (i.e. “A door has opened in the Wastelands”), and even then those with enough patience will rarely feel completely lost if they’re willing to backtrack systematically through every area over and over, taking note of every single locked door and unreachable area. I doubt it’s something the majority of gamers enjoy doing, but if you’re the type who would rather give up before accepting a hint, I’m happy to report that this game IS beatable even with your play style.
On the other hand, this structure also adds a lot to the feeling of being on a dangerous, epic quest. Metroidvania fans know that there are few things as satisfying as picking up a key and thinking “hey, I recognize this symbol! Now I can finally see what’s behind that door in the swamp!”. Uncovering the world bit by bit in this fashion really lends an air of mystery to the land of Cronos (where Hexen is set), and truly gives you that classic feeling of “pride and accomplishment” when you’re finally able to descend into that forbidding temple that’s been looming on the horizon for so long. And for those of you who are worried you won’t get to blast enough monsters to get your fill, this game still has you covered.

The enemies in Hexen are just as threatening as those in Heretic, and they look even better this time (seriously, if you enjoyed the visual aspect of Heretic, Hexen steps it up tenfold with truly gorgeous sprites, textures, animations and even some environmental visual effects, like thick mist and dead leaves blowing in the wind). You’ve got a fantastic cast of evil wizards, zombies, dog-like orcs, Minotaurs and more types of dragons and dragon hybrids than you could shake a Mace of Contrition at. A good amount of the baddies are initially very similar to those in Heretic, but their attacks are more distinct, varied and dangerous, and there are a whole lot more of these guys this time around. If you have the enemy counter turned on in your automap it won’t be uncommon to see the numbers exceed 400, and some of the weaker enemies will even respawn after a while. Don’t worry though, it’s not frequent enough to be stressful, but instead it really helps the backtracking from getting too tedious. Key hunting is a lot more intense when you never know if an Ettin is waiting around the corner to cave your skull in! However, if you’ve seen any other reviews of this game, you’ve heard a lot of grief expressed in regards to the Minotaurs (and their big brothers, the Maulotaurs). They aren’t the strongest foe in the game, but their shields, their surprise lighting bolts and their sheer numbers can definitely be a pain in the gluteus maximus. On the plus side, it makes killing them all the more satisfying, and you’ll find yourself experimenting quite a bit with your weapons and items to figure out the safest and quickest way to end their existence.
That’s right, I forgot to mention the items. The third and last major difference between Doom and these games is your inventory. The items are largely the same in all the games in the series, and using them can be a bit of a hassle unless you’re willing to fiddle around with your control settings to find a setup you prefer (I would usually bind the item selection keys to the scroll wheel and use them with the right mouse button). Visually, the inventory is similar to that seen in Duke Nukem 3D, and just like in that game, you’ll likely find yourself using some items a lot more frequently than others. Health and mana refills are a major aid, and beyond that you have things such as invisibility, invincibility, flechettes (despite what the name says, they’re more like grenades or mines, depending on your class), and a magical book that gives your weapons a much more powerful firing mode for a short time (although this item is mysteriously absent in Hexen). A special mention also goes to the Morph Ovum/Porkelator/Seal of the Ovinomancer, which transforms an enemy into a chicken/pig/sheep, respectively. A lot of fun to use, and and immense help against some stronger enemies if you’re low on health and/or mana.
If you didn’t find yourself using these items all too much in Heretic or Hexen, the following game might just give you a reason to. Hexen II is the third game in the series, and the final chapter in the Serpent Riders saga. This time you’re in the realm of Thyrion, and the last Serpent Rider, Eidolon, is the one who must be slain to free the land from his curse. In terms of gameplay, Hexen II is a lot more similar to Hexen than Hexen was to Heretic. You’ve got the same type of hub level structure, and you’ll again pick a class at the start, although now your choice has expanded, consisting of the Crusader, Paladin, Necromancer and Assassin, as well as the Demoness in the expansion (yes, all these games have expansion packs and they’re all worth playing in that they’re more of the same, but expanded, duh, and more polished).
The major difference this time around is one you can probably tell immediately from the screenshot: yes, Hexen II goes 3D (and in an exception to the common rule at the time, it is NOT titled “Hexen 3D” despite technically being the third installment). Specifically, the game uses a modified Quake engine. As mentioned, the core gameplay remains largely the same as in Hexen, but the level designers definitely did not waste that extra dimension. The levels are less expansive here, but a lot more complex and full of hidden passages, surprising loops and a whole lot of verticality. Scurring across a courtyard with archers raining arrows down on you from balconies is just as tense as it is satisfying later on to reach the same balcony and return the favor to any ghoul unlucky enough to find themselves below. Overall, the layout and progression in each area feels like it’s been given a lot more consideration and has endured more testing. Most of the time, the key hunting in each area feels more self-contained, and when it isn’t you rarely feel like you have no idea where to go. This is because every lock has been designed to feel more like a puzzle. In practice, your goal is still to find an item and bring it somewhere, but the locks and keys themselves are much more distinct, which helps you remember what to do and where to go. Instead of levers and typical keys, you find yourself looking for artefacts such as potion ingredients that will let you turn metal into wood, pieces of a broken mechanism or symbolic relics that must be placed in the hands of a statue to go in line with a prophecy. There are also more direct instructions in the form of book entries and inscribed stone tablets, which are very helpful in those cases where the puzzle might require a bit more than just item hunting, such as pulling switches in a certain order or lining objects up to create a pattern. It’s still unlikely that you’ll breeze through the whole game without getting confused, but you’ll rarely be at a complete loss; you’ll usually know what you’re looking for or what you’re trying to activate, even if you may need a walkthrough to find a specific hidden passage or to figure out exactly what a contraption does.
Overall, Hexen II feels like a refined Hexen, with more care put into making every area feel very distinct. It is absolutely not any less challenging though. The areas might be smaller in terms of actual units of measurement, and there are definitely fewer enemies on the screen at all times, but this is compensated for in spades. The third dimension adds a thick layer of complexity to every level, and the enemies hit HARD. If you got into a rhythm in Hexen of circle strafing, dodging and picking off targets in an order of perceived priority, you’ll have to learn to dance to a different tune here. Some enemies will close in on you incredibly quickly, and many of them have the ability to turn you into minced meat in a matter of seconds. Now more than ever is when you’ll want to shoot with a steady aim, use your items wisely, keep all the possible paths of retreat in your mental map, and scour every nook and cranny for health and mana to stand a chance against some of the stronger mooks. Hexen II as a whole is a lot more fast paced and tense and also has a more dramatic views and set pieces along with some extra bits of storytelling scattered around the world for those interested.

So, what are my thoughts on the Heretic/Hexen series as a whole? In short, it’s a treat. Combining classic fantasy tropes with the hectic action of Doom (and Quake) was an idea that was bound to happen sooner or later, and in this case, it worked out really well. There are of course other examples of this iconic clash of genres (check out Amid Evil for a totally kick-ass recent example!), but from what I know, the Serpent Riders saga is the one with the most lasting appeal. All the games strike a great balance between frantic, gory FPS action and the slower paced mystery and brooding sense of evil that only dark castles and dungeons can provide, with each game leaning a bit more toward one direction or the other. At a core gameplay level, there is nothing absolutely groundbreaking about Heretic/Hexen, but every element is done well and with care, and the presentation oozes of 20th century gothic fantasy charm, both the visuals and music. If the first paragraph of this review made you go “oh, those are both things I like!” then definitely check these games out. Same goes for anyone who is simply curious about the history of Id software and the impact Doom and Quake had on the gaming landscape. My only warning to you before playing these games is this: keep in mind that these games are from the 90s. There’s a reason many people have memories of booting these games up, getting completely stuck and then never playing them again. That said, as long as you have an internet connection (how else would you be reading this?) and an average amount of patience, there’s a whole lot of fun to be had here. All the games mentioned above are available on Steam (and GoG as well, I believe), and play excellently with modern source ports: gzdoom for Heretic and Hexen, and Hammer of Thyrion for Hexen II are my recommendations.
Finally, there is another game in the franchise. Heretic II returns to the story of Corvus (from the first game) and continues the story beyond the Serpent Riders arc, but due to some licensing issues it is not available on neither Steam nor GoG. Technically you could still buy a physical copy of the game, and I’ve seen mentions of at least one fan endeavor to make the game more accessible on modern computers, but I have yet to check it out. Maybe in the future. For now, I hope you enjoyed this dive into one of the slightly less famous, but still very popular classic 90s “Doom clones”!

A Winter's Ball
Day 1 of the Fundywastaken week
Hosted by @fundyfiles
Fundy didn’t really like balls.
They always demanded so much energy. How to behave correctly, how to dress, how to look, how much time you have to be there, how to dance, how to eat, and the list goes on and on.
So, when his father told him that they would have a Winter’s Ball hosted at their palace, the only thing Fundy was happy about was that he wouldn’t have the trouble to behave during the trip. And he could steal food from the kitchens without big troubles. Definitely the best outcome.
What didn’t he like about the situation? The ball was only to welcome some far kingdom stupid king and his court. Which means he would have to be placed as some dumb mannequin right beside the rest of the family AND be forced to oblige his younger uncle to behave. Great. So. Fucking. Great.
Fundy did his best to pretend to not be bothered while testing his clothes, but his ears pressed against his head and tail wrapped around his leg really didn’t help his case. His father knew him way too well, so he just sighed and approached his only and annoyed son.
“C’mon, Fundy. Don’t be like that.” Wilbur tried, smiling a little. Fundy just rolled his eyes, now looking up. “Like what? You know I hate balls.” “I know, but you’re a prince! Part of the-” “Part of the great Antarctic Empire. Ok, I know that. It doesn’t mean I have to like this bureaucratic bullshit.”
Wilbur shaked his head, usually the talk wasn’t this bad. “Fundy, what’s wrong this time?”
“....It’s the prince.”
“The prince? You only met him once, Fundy!”
“He was a snobby asshole!”
“He was ten!”
“Imagine now, with 21!” Fundy huffed again, ears perking up and a slight growl in his voice, only getting a weak slap due to his behavior.
“Deal with it, Fundy. You will be the host of the ball, and you supposedly have some royal manners.”
"Fine. But, if he acts like a bitch, I'll bite his face off."
Wilbur ended up smiling with that, huffing his son's orange hair. "You sound just like your mother. She also hated this royal stuff."
"Wasn't she also the one who stole your gold when you were 18?" Fundy poked, knowing that story like the back of his hand.
"My gold and my heart." Wilbur half sang, he had a song written with that exact lyrics.
Fundy pushed his dad away, ending the talk by saying he would do his best, and went back to testing his clothes.
The ball came, and Fundy wished he had run away the day before it.
There he stayed, right beside Tommy and his royal hyperactivity, both of them not wanting to be there, pretending to be some good behaved family.
The northerner king and her court entered the large ball venue, people complimenting them as they passed by. The king was a sheep hybrid, and the people said she used to be king of the pirates before being declared king. Her name was Puffy, and her kids were named Foolish, Dream and Michelle, and, as far as Fundy knew, all adopted.
That's why Fundy didn't even bother to look at them, focusing on his friend Niki talking with Eret, or Tubbo and Jack Manifold quietly snatching food from the table.
Fundy waited for the moment his grandpa, Emperor Philza, went to compliment King Puffy and he quietly left his place, followed by Tommy. Which one went in a different direction, and Fundy was the lucky one to be stopped by Technoblade.
"Where are you going?" He asked, voice low.
"I was bored, and I have a sweet!"
Fundy took out a chocolate treat wrapped in plastic from his pocket, putting it on Technoblade's hand and quickly moving away before he could stop him. "Love ya, Uncle Techno!"
Fundy walked fast, zigzagging around the corridors and halls, finally ending up on a cool and quiet balcony. The stars were shining in the night sky and the snow started to slowly fall. It was pretty, and calm.
Well, at least for a while.
Someone also walked in, and they both stared at each other in surprise. The other man was blond and had green piercing eyes. The bottom half of his face was covered by a white scarf, probably due to the cold.
"Uh… how did you end up here?" Fundy asked, since he was in one of the furthest points from the ballroom.
"I got lost, this place is huge." The boy said, voice muffled by the scarf. He placed himself right besides Fundy, side-eyeing the fox. "Wait, aren't you one of the princes? I saw you there."
"Yeah…" Fundy said, kinda annoyed. "Prince Fundy, not at your service."
This made the boy laugh, and Fundy noticed the reptilian-like pupils dilated a little. This guy was a reptile hybrid, no doubt why he was suffering with the temperature, it must be hard to be cold-blooded.
“Damn, are you always this harsh with people?”
Fundy actually held himself back this time, noticing that he was kinda aggressive with the poor guy. “Sorry, I was just stressed. Balls aren’t my thing.”
“What, you can’t dance?” The guy mocked, leaning towards Fundy.
“I am actually a great dancer, smartass. But there’s this other court here and I’ll have to probably talk with this other prince… He is an idiot.”
“What?” The guy almost looked offended. “Why?”
“He is a snob. I’ve met him before, I was a kid, but I can feel when the vibe is wrong.”
“And….” The guy tried to make his way, nervously hitting the balcony. “Can’t you give him another chance?”
“For that, I’d have to go down to the ballroom, and act like a prince. Won’t do that, I hate to behave.”
“I can see that, you don’t act all prince-y like.”
Fundy scuffed, laughing a little. “If you actually knew what it is like to be part of this family, you’d know it's not that glamorous.” The guy sympathetically nodded, letting Fundy talk. “Dad is so annoying, and he wants me to be the perfect prince. Tommy always get away with his antics, while I just get fucked.”
“Wow, dirty mouth.”
“Wow, boring.”
They stared at each other, a spark of challenge between two boys that apparently never met before.
“Me? Boring?” Fundy nodded, taking out another sweet from his pocket and eating without ceremony. “I can prove I’m not.”
Fundy raised an eyebrow, curiosity being his fatal flaw. “I’ll bite it, how?”
The other man fixed his clothes and stole the rest of the threat Fundy left on the balcony taking out the scarff just to eat the chocolate.. “Dance with me, I can prove balls aren’t that bad.”
For once, Fundy hesitated.
It was a guy he never met before, but now he was staring at mischievous and challenging green eyes and a smirk that made him feel something. His breath condensed in the cold air almost as smoke. A dragon hybrid, where he met a dragon before?
“C’mon, Fundy… The fox doesn’t bite?” And there it was, the last push. Fundy should think before going into this stuff.
But it was too late to think, Fundy taking the hand offered by the mysterious guy and feeling only the heat of a challenge.
“Bet accepted.”
And now, Fundy was in the middle of the dance.
The guy pulled Fundy close, taking the lead of the dance, and they spinned around the floor, in the middle of other people. Fundy could see Niki surprisingly staring at him, Tommy saying something behind his back, and his uncle Techno eating a threat like the one Fundy bribed him with. But his focus was in his moves, eager to prove that he was a great dancer.
He stole the control of the dance in the middle of a spin, and, for a moment, he saw the dragon slightly blushing, but he kept dancing.
The control shifted, and shifted, and they lost count. Both were in charge of the dance. It was funny, and Fundy was actually enjoying himself for once. Songs passed one after the other, and they kept enjoying themselves.
Fundy only stopped after seeing his grandfather approaching, right besides the northerner king. Fundy and the guy stopped dancing, making a small reverence to the two monarchs.
“Oh, I’m glad to see you two are getting along!” King Puffy said, a relieved smile on her face just to match the surprise on Philza’s. “I was worried that I’d have to, hm, calm down some conflict.”
Fundy was confused, or at least he wanted to be, because the reveal of what was going on already happened in his brain, and he didn’t want to acknowledge that.
“Don’t worry, dad, me and Prince Fundy got along just fine.” The guy said, and Fundy ignored the fact he knew his name. No. It couldn’t be him.
“Great, Dream. I’m going to need you to come with me. Can you?” She asked, in a really sweet tone.
“Okay, let me just end this talk with Fundy.”
Both the Antarctic Emperor and the northerner King nodded and walked away, Philza still looking back to Fundy.
“Well, I have to go.”
Prince Dream held Fundy’s hand, planting a kiss on the back of it. “I hope I didn’t bore you”. The dragon hybrid smirked one last time to Fundy and left, disappearing between the crowd.
Behind, only a flustered prince with a fast beating heart, convinced of how much of a prick that stupidly beautiful northerner prince was.

Dragon Dancer III: Maternal Instinct
Major Spoilers: Chisei Spoilers for Level 103
Trigger Warning: Cruel imagery
The full force of Chisei's Soul Skill Majesty descended on the area. Only the King and the white winged child remained unaffected by the tenfold increase in gravitational pull.
His Dragon Words sent everyone else into a gasping heap on the ground as they struggled to remain conscious.
I stood behind Chisei who leaned out of the open helicopter door.
“You can still leave.” He shouted over the rotors.
“I will not.” My eyes shone golden, my dragon blood purity rising to still my fears and make myself more eager for a fight. I was not the young woman talking to him from before but the fearless Empress Hybrid.
He turned his head. Using such a powerful Soul Skill turned his eyes that same golden color. It reminded me of my love, Johann Chu, and my heart stirred in my chest.
Chisei was stronger than Johann. I squeezed his shoulder and smiled.
Chisei leaped from the helicopter and I followed him, a bright lance appearing in my hand. The wind roared against my ear drums. The ground rushed up to me. My heart leaped in my chest and I felt a wild sort of joy. I braced myself for landing, the shock of it rattle through my knees and hips and spine. I rolled to my feet and sprinted toward the battle.
The heavily armored former priests sent a rain of cover fire that cut down the struggling Devil Clan members where they lay. They were sliding down ropes from the helicopter, brandishing their weapons.
Chisei’s leap had forced him to lift the gravitational well. The Devil Clan survivors struggled under the rain of fire and the dizziness, still some mounted a desperate counter attack. A few unlucky ones were shot off the ropes and fell the rest of the way down from the helicopter. If the shot didn’t kill them the fall likely did. I threw myself against one of the gunmen, stabbing him through the chest. His scream rattled my ears.
With a flick of my arm, three more spears felled another man who had pointed his gun up at the helicopter. I called Ielia and the phantom dashed to the other end of the Red Well. She was like a bright white wolf among sheep. Their bullets flew right through her, shooting into their own comrades in their attempt to kill an ethereal ghost.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Chisei charge the King, but the man simply tossed a baby in the air. I stood in confusion when the child opened massive wings to shield him from Chisei’s attack. My chest tightened.
For a few breathless seconds, I couldn't move. In the light of my dragon eyes, I recognized this child as truly my own, the child of an emperor hybrid man. My vision focused on its beautiful eyes, patterned, like a mandala. I knew those eyes. They were Ruri Kazama's eyes.
Inside my mind, I begged Chisei not to attack it, even as he charged with twin blades. I wanted to tell him that this was no brave fighter. Couldn't he see he was crying?
I watched, frozen, as the child defended out of instinct, throwing out flaming tendrils to protect himself. He flailed wildly, seeking to hit Chisei with all his strength. The tendrils whipped in unpredictable patterns, leaving craters in the ground with every desperate strike. Chisei was forced to back away or risk being cut in two.
One fiery vine arced upward and sliced a burning trail into the large helicopter hovering above. The pilot did not have time to get out and struggled to control the aircraft as it descended so as to avoid landing on his Patriarch. He slammed into the high stone walls surrounding the well. The fuselage rolled down the vertical surface and showered flaming debris on both the child and Chisei.
Facing threats both above and in front, the child curled itself within his wings in defense. In doing so, he could no longer see.
Maternal instinct finally impelled me. I ran toward the baby boy, my heart in my throat, hoping to take it away from this battlefield!
A sound above me. The rotor had broken loose from the wreckage and was dropping right between us! I barely avoided being crushed. In an instant, the air was full of glass and cutting bits of metal.
My approach was blocked again, this time by Chisei himself. He passed in front of me, blades forward, eyes intent, clothing torn, body bloodied.
The child was forced to open its white wings to escape the rain of metal and in that moment, Chisei threw the swords. They pierced the baby through its tiny body.
All the air rushed from my lungs. I must have screamed, but my voice was lost in the sound of crashing metal.
Chisei grabbed hold of me, threw to the ground, pinned me. A second later, the helicopter smashed on top of us, plunging us into darkness.
I should have been crushed. Instead, the wreckage had fallen around Chisei.
A fire swept through the wreckage. Silvery scales crawled across his skin in the crimson light. He was bearing the full weight of the helicopter with an unnatural surge of muscle. He halted the progression of the fire with his breathing, sucking bellows of air.
"Please... Chisei... It's not his fault. Let me take him." I begged.
"Our blood is cursed. If we die here, the legacy of emperors ends. The world is a better place." He snarled, gasping under the weight of the helicopter, baring the sharpened teeth of a dragon.
"Don't give into... Despair, Chisei." His dripped blood left a burning trail down my face, mingling with my tears.
"It’s reality!" Crystalline claws stretched from his fingertips and dug into the red earth.
"Then I reject this reality!" I rolled over to face him. I wrapped my arms around his neck. "Release!"
I let my soul speech rise to meet the challenge of his runaway dragonblood, just like I had with Johann over the Bay of Bombay, just like I had with Ruri Kazama. Chisei had come to battle ready to throw everything away for victory. If his blood rose just one step higher, I would lose him forever to it.
A voice just outside. I couldn't hear what was being said, but the rhythm and tone told me it was the King.
Chisei's body heaved in a mighty shrug and he stood. I still clung to his neck and he brought me with him, lifting me clear off the ground. His hand thrust through the metal wreckage. Then he used his other fist to smash a hole through the helicopter in one hit.
Chisei walked from the wreckage with a silvery white body showing through his torn clothes. With one clawed hand, he grasped the King completely around the head.
Chisei lifted his own pair of bat-like wings from his back. The wounds created by their emergence healed closed before my eyes.
I rested my head against his cheek, whispering the draconic to keep his mind clear, and his soul intact. Chisei had gone Devil. In the depth of his personal darkness, he'd been tempted by the draw of power, like a moth drawn to the flame.
The King was screaming. "Dragon blood! You drank dragon bl-"
Chisei's grip tightened. The screams of the King cut off. The King's skull broke apart. Chisei let the limp body of the King drop and left a crushed spurting mess on the ground.. He walked towards the child.
I looked over my shoulder. The child was still alive despite the heavy blades that impaled him. I turned back to the Devil Emperor, trying to meet his eyes. "Mercy! Mercy!" I struggled to pull his blood down to weaken him enough for him to listen. Blood Rage burned through my body in the effort. He wasn't going to listen.
My lips curled up to show my fangs. I let go of him, landed on my feet. I staggered back and sent an array of spears of light to impale him. They thrust from the ground into his body, crossing him like tentpoles, halting his steps. I didn't retract them but let them linger there, embedded.
Their heat cauterized and reopened the wounds in a cycle, making it impossible for him to heal. His claws reached down to grab them, but they burned his hands.
He snarled, trembling in pain, but his expression was like a stone wall as he looked at me. Gradually, the scales on his body retreated, the wings blackened and crumbled. I released the spears. Chisei fell to his knees.
I rushed to the child's side, one hand curling around the hilt of one sword. His white wings had withered, his eyes were shut. But he was breathing. Removing the blade might cause more pain! Leaving it in ... Would he die?
Sobbing bitterly, I apologized and withdrew one blade and then the other, pleading that his dragonblood be enough to heal, to live.
I cradled the baby in my arms in silence. The helicopter was burning and collapsing, but the Devil Clan and the soldiers had finished each other off in their battle.
I stood staggering towards the box that held the wriggling parasite. So long as that thing lived, my child would never have a secure future.
“Father...?” At this time, the only person I could think of was my own father who had spared my life for his own pleasure. “ I need to ask you one thing. How did you obliterate something from existence?”
“To applause.” I turned my head. The King was still alive. I staggered away from him, but didn’t get far. Chisei’s Spider Fang was in his hand, and he’d run me through with it back to front. The steel felt cold. Then unbearably hot. The baby slipped from my grasp and he caught him.

Astraeus Wohrfaynson-Ifre’vok
Nicknames: Aster, The Blacksmith, Titan Age : 206 at time of death (would have been 389 during The Fall) Species : Hybrid (Fire Chroma + Brokt Kuros) Desired Voice Actor: Dwayne Johnson Family :
Parents: Titus Burntfeather and Ifreann Cred’vel
Brothers and Sisters: Many, notably Morpheus Starborn
Mate(s): Mated with many dragons, but became life-bonded to Kishi Earthtender-Firestone before death
Children: Many, notably Gaea Firestone
Element:
MAIN: Fire
MINOR: Earth
Abilities: Ignisoculo, or Fire-Scrying, the ability to interpret visions of the future and present in different locations. The Metal Song, the ability to understand the way that precious metals can best be shaped into weapons, armor, and the like. Breathes a type of liquid fire that is thick, and can either catch fire on contact with a surface, or in the air depending on Astraeus’s will.
Profession: The Smith and Mentor of Metal. Astraeus became Wohrfayn’s sole armor and weaponry smith after coming of age, having trained under the mysterious and elusive Metal Dragons that lived under Wohrfayn’s abandoned ruins underground. Through Astraeus’s tutelage, he also trained many other dragons in his art, though it’s thanks to him that the trade was taught to Chroma in the first place.
Personality: Sometimes arrogant, Astraeus is a black sheep in Warfang, but one that made his odd appearance work for him. Eventually. His formative experiences as a child made him guarded, but a good judge of character. If he felt he could trust an individual, he would, and that trust was very hard for them to lose. Being the hybrid of one of the Chroma’s longest standing enemy species of dragons, Astraeus learned to find humor where he could, and offer up kindness anytime it was possible. Astraeus can be very charming, if not a little manipulative, but mostly in order to gain temporary amicability around others long enough to get out of a tricky situation. He’s also very proud of what he does, and wore the title of The Smith with honor and personal responsibility.
History: A very few know how Astraeus came to Wohrfayn, the famous Chroma capitol protected in the Maw of Ksindæl. Since his untimely and unexpected death, that tale has been mostly lost to rumor and over dramatized retellings, painting Astraeus in a much less than favorable light.
The truth of things, however, is this. Astraeus was laid outside the protective walls of Wohrfayn, to a Brokt who had only recently fled the protective Veil surrounding Kurosia. His own sire, on seeing the egg with it’s near-pitch shell, abandoned the Brokt to the elements, returning to Wohrfayn to reclaim his place as one of the senior War Advisors in the Circle. But it was not to be. Titus Burntfeather was removed from the Circle, under suspicions that he had committed atrocious war crimes, and had possibly sided with the Kuros during his capture that resulted in Astraeus’s birth.
Of course, after hatching and for the first few years of his life, Astraeus knew none of this. He knew only the blurry, vague shapes the world around him as his vision developed. Only knew the tase of prechewed rats and sometimes, a rabbit. And the soft, comforting voice of his mother. The songs of the earth she taught him, of her own people, of friendship and battle. And he knew the scent of her tears when she sang about love.
She never sang about her family.
After she named him, in the evening when he breathed his first tongue of flame, much was left to empty blackness. Unlike any he had, or would experience in his short life, this blackness was cold and confusing. Unyielding. It would nag at the back of his memory for many years, though it would not become unbearable until he’d sired children of his own.
During his childhood in Wohrfayn, Astraeus was the target of many to speak to in spiteful and angry tones. Though he could not help the circumstances of his birth, the black scales and his Kuronium bones could not be ignored. They were a symbol of everything the Chroma had fought years ago, symbols of those who had once hoped to wipe them out, symbols of their forced allies through treaties that the Chroma people felt were unfair and restrictive to their freedoms.
To his credit, Astraeus did take these things in stride. It was difficult at first, as his only guardians were those who had to guard him. The Elemental Mentors, those defacto leaders of the Chroma people and the most important part of the Circle. For it was they who were tasked with shepherding the orphans of Wohrfayn. It fell to the Mentors to assign teachers and lessons about languages, writing, reading, religion, and history and all other academic pursuits. And it was they who were tasked ultimately with teaching the orphans and those born under Wohrfayn’s banner how to master their elements.
It wasn’t any of those born naturally into the Chroma who took him under their metaphorical wing, but in fact those who had been adopted into it who guarded him most. The patriach of the Nature dragons, Lai-Chen, and through him, the leader of the Metal dragons. Only Astraeus himself could have told how Lai-Chen introduced them, but it was a secret that Astraeus took with him to the grave, for fear that they would be cast out from the protection of the Chroma.
After Astraeus had born many children with multiple partners during the Chroma’s Open Flights, and seen his first few clutches hatched safely, the darkness from before began to claw at him again. It seemed that seeing and hearing the sounds of his own children hatching and their wavering, mewling cries reminded him of his own for a parent he felt he had never known. More specifically, the cries for his mother.
It was no secret to him by then that he was at least somehow related to Titus Burntfeather, who of course had laid no claim to him. (Despite the fact that Astraeus had made quite the name and reputation for himself, both of which Titus would have been proud of were he not of mixed blood.) Their feathers near identical, and with tempers to match. Though where Titus would lash out at others, Astraeus would turn to his forge. Regardless of minor differences, these glaring similarities he could not ignore, and made sure that Titus could not ignore him. For weeks, he attempted to speak to the retired, and shamed Adviser, only to be snubbed at every turn. Eventually Astraeus, in his anger, insinuated that Titus had to know something about his parents, but was too much of a coward to tell him. Infuriated, Titus spat in Astraeus’s face, and challenged him to a fight for his own honor. The stakes were thus: if Astraeus won, Titus would tell him everything. But if he lost, Titus could petition to have him exiled from Wohrfayn. His military career might’ve been over, but he still held enough sway that Astraeus would be kicked out within the fortnight, forbidden from entering Wohrfayn’s walls ever again.
Astraeus agreed.
The fight itself was long, and bloody. Astraeus fought with honor before the gathered audience, and so too did Titus, at first. But near the end of the fight, as it became clear that Astraeus’s youth and his raw, instinctive ability was far superior, Titus began to cheat. Despite being witnessed, Astraeus refused to let the old man be forced to forfeit, and the fight went on. Finally, Astraeus stood over his soundly defeated opponent. Titus spat again in Astraeus’s face, and told him everything.
When Astraeus had breathed his first flame, Titus had seen that his love and the egg from their accursed union had both survived, and flourished. Titus had left them both to die, but on realizing that Astraeus might buy him his power with the people back, he’d returned to finish his mother off, and return with the boy ‘born of an unexpected, but pure union’ to prove to the Circle he’d committed no cruel crimes against the Kuros during wartime. But it hadn’t worked. Astraeus had thrived in some way, some impossible way, and here Titus was, bloodied and shamed before his entire people by the one he’d thought would secure his honor back in its rightful place. Titus told him that his mother, Ifreann, one of King Burdohk's Arrows, had not fought to save him. That instead she’d fought to kill him, to keep Astraeus from Titus, to refuse him the quality of life Titus had to offer him. Astraeus refused to believe this part, but claimed his prize, leaving the arena to find his mother’s final resting place.
Some tell that as he left, another followed him. That wherever Ifreann’s body was left to rot, Astraeus was met by the one dragon who he loved more than any he’d ever known. That Kishi Earthtender, who had long refused his playful advances, comforted him as the cold and unfeeling darkness left him. The nastier rumors say he seduced her there, while others say their courtship began in earnest on that day, and that their love was true and deep as any.
Astraeus disappeared with Kishi, only to return with his youngest daughter and the last child he would ever sire. It’s said by some that he used the secrets he’d learned, either from blood or from the Metal dragons, and tried to end Gaea’s life before it really even began. But others suspect that while dark magic was involved, and left it’s scar over Gaea’s heart, the dark magic came from another. Regardless of who it came from, Astraeus was executed there for what he’d done.
And Kishi, who had followed Astraeus back to Wohrfayn, was sent back as a prisoner to her birth clan, with Gaea under the protection of the Circle on the grounds that neither parent were currently judged as fit to raise her. She would live out her first ten seasons with her birth clan, where she could be closer to her mother, before being brought back to Wohrfayn, where she could be trained by the Mentors and live as a child of Wohrfayn herself.
And it is in his shadow that Gaea has lived, in all her life, though she cannot hope to understand this yet. But she will....
Trivia:
Astraeus had over two dozen lovers until he fell, hard, for Kishi. In life his mother, Ifreann, had many Mjol and Mjia herself. It seemed the apple didn’t fall far from the tree!
If his physical appearance wasn’t obvious, Astraeus did take a LOT more after his Kuros blood. He takes a lot after his grandparents, with Clìfeid’s eyes and psuedo-throat pouch and Creidmheach’s bulk and stubborn streak. This sort of broke Ifreann’s heart, but she was glad she managed to keep some part of her parents with her even in exile.
Astraeus never met another Kuros (besides Ifreann) in the Kurosia Original-verse, but was fascinated by them. He doesn’t know it, but the Metal Song is something the Metal dragons learned from the Kuros in ancient times when they were tentative allies. It’s actually a bond with Wunjabrot, a blessing that extends past the Veil itself to those who have some darkness in them.
Astraeus wasn’t ashamed of Gaea being born without her forelimb, nor did he intend to kill her. She became the entire center of his universe the moment she hatched, and it made him act rashly. Astraeus was a very devoted father before dying, and would gladly claim those he sired during Open Flights as his own, even when his other partners would not. Gaea was special in many ways, however, and one could argue she was absolutely his favorite.
