This is "Single robe, purple gauze ground, cat on a bamboo screen, flowering plants" (Edo period, 19th century), which was well received at the "Embroidery and Weaving: The Splendid World of Japanese Dyeing and Weaving" exhibition. The exquisitely embroidered cherry blossoms, the bamboo blind, and the cat are, of course, a scene from "The Tale of Genji. It will be interesting to see what kind of woman wore this kimono.

Alright that's it. Time for some grand escapism. Who wants to start a wool farm with me? I want some sheep and alpacas and classes in spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting, crocheting, and miscellaneous other textile history. Raise your hands. What's your cloud castle that you escape to? Wool farm is mine. What's your ideal lifetime project that you want to find the time for?

A poll, because I'm curious to know if I'm alone in my feelings about all these colourful artisan yarns I keep seeing posted on here:
(Note, this is specifically about projects where you're picking the yarn to your own taste, not gifts or commissions where you're constrained by what the eventual recipient would like! I'm interested in your personal feelings in particular.)

Genuine question as a knitter but like what do people knit out of those really pretty hand-dyed or variegated yarns? Like I see sooo many really pretty skeins of yarn that are such a beautiful combo of colors but I feel like it would look weird as a hat or like as a whole sweater? Also I only usually have the money to get like one at a time.
Maybe I'll take up weaving and weave a scarf out of them? I think I prefer woven to knitted scarves. Maybe knit a shawl? Idk.

would you ever wanna move back/settle down in malaysia? like i know politically it’s a mess and as a queer person it also sucks balls but i also love it here and wouldnt wanna start over anywhere else?
it's my dream to one day move home and set up a textile studio + artist residency in malaysia where i can live and work and support textile artists in seasia, either in kl or in my hometown (my family is from seremban). super cannot afford to do any of that right now but i hope that one day i'll be able to move back at the very least 🤎
#there used to be an artist residency in seremban but it hasnt operated for several years now#so it would be nice to have one there + have it be focused on textiles#i want to have a dye garden of local dye plants and teach classes in dyeing and weaving etc#sigh

I don't think I've ever worn a vest, sweater or otherwise, in my life, but I think they would work pretty well with how I dress now--lots of jackets bc 1) I'm cold and 2) much easier to take on and off in public than a sweater or hoodie. But I don't zip them bc zipped/buttons look bad sitting down and im Always Sitting Down. Whereas if the jacket is just hanging open it doesn't look as bad. So a vest would have the same overall appearance without the work of also doing sleeves.
Also, I think i have enough yarn for a sweater vest but probably not for a sweater.
Could also weave large squares of them on my big peg loom. And then felt most likely. I might try that first and see what kind of fabric I get.
#i think ive already talked myself into it#thing is tho the colors are not to my taste at all so i need to dye most if not all of it#ill have to think about that a while#powerchair user#knitting#knit vest#weaving

Normal amount of dye to shed...
#jeremy weaves#the scarf is fine! the black is still black and the grey is still light/medium shades#it just looks dark here bc it's wet#i believe 100% of the shed dye was from the commercially spun/ dyed black yarn#i rinsed several times after this but did not try to make it run clear bc didn't want to agitate the wool too much
