Glad you dig my EDM flute gig - as a matter of fact, I'm back in the studio for the first time in years, working on new music for a wild collaborative performance art project that's been in development for over a year now with a queer performance collective in Berlin. The score has plenty of ambient/techno/trance elements, and my current EDM playlist is a deep well of inspiration.

For many years, I've played at clubs and warehouse parties, taking my unamplified flute and improvising along with whatever the DJ is putting through the speakers as I move through the space, aiming the notes where I sense the physics of the music will carry them, bouncing them off the walls and looking for the groove, the moments where I hook into the flow and without thinking about it anticipate the breaks and key changes and note patterns that are coming two, three, four measures ahead - and the thrill when I nail it just right and see the faces near me light up like Christmas trees and just that quick I'm gone to a fresh part of the space, sometimes with applause ringing at my back...

At a Tom of Finland warehouse party during NYC Pride in 2004, one of the go-go boys was in the green room dressing for his shift on the boxes, I had just finished my last set, my flute key pads sticky with the sweat of 2,000 shirtless guys that hung in the air, clouds of perspiration coating my head, my tongue cut and bleeding - the kid asks me what's that, I say it's my flute, well what do you do with it, I tell him I just play along with what the DJ plays -

and he starts laughing, a huge Cheshire Cat grin on his face, you mean you just put that thing together and play along? Yeah, I say. Jesus Christ! he laughs, incredulous. Holy shit, that's amazing, I've never heard of this, that's crazy shit man, and the kid is so taken with the thought he can't stop jumping around... he'd never heard of such a thing, and God I'll never forget that.

Since I was 15 years old, I've been blowing air through a metal stick with holes in it and waving my fingers up and down on it, and sometimes people are moved to tears or delighted or happy, and sometimes they just go apeshit.

This was recorded in 2001-2002. Ambient techno trance from Equa, John Neff, engineer; Rich Berman, bass; Animal J. Smith, flute.

Binged your tags before bed and promptly had a bizarre and terrifying dream in which I personally washed up at the Spire and taught the denizens how to play piano (I cannot and have never been able to play the piano) anyway I think my subconscious is asking what the music culture's like on Siren? Overall most species have hands that don't stray too far from anatomically modern humans, so constructing/playing any instrument that exists today would probably be more of a size/materials/knowledge concern, right? Not that I'm assuming any contemporary instruments survived that long of course, since I doubt anyone back in Ishmael's time was scrambling to grab their guitar when their lives were on the line (even if it would be funny)

honestly who knows, there's a lot of 'unknown artifacts' found in the precursor settlements which on closer inspections might just be the remains of various instruments; one problem would be the fact that the settlements are mostly flooded/only accessible by diving and those instruments would have had to be waterproof to persist and if they are electronic they probably didn't get the same waterproofing as the rest of the 'vital for life' settlement computers

but for musical instruments made ON siren by sirenians a major limitation which might prevent them from making the instruments most familiar to us is the absence of wood, animals with hide and sinew, and metal. obviously the most simple percussion instruments can be made out of anything you can play a beat on so that's no problem. but unless you want to get VERY morbid you cannot make a skin drum or musical strings [sinew or metal].

the most obvious direction i can think of is woodwind instruments, because reeds are the most abundant land-based construction material and they are naturally hollow. dried and cured reeds are a strong and light building material but can't be carved the way wood can. instead you need to heat them with steam and bend them to the desired shape. so i'm imagining a variety of curly pipes, flutes, wooden trumpets (??) etc.

because sound propagates really good underwater i think there's a huge potential for an underwater music scene with instruments and soundscapes that you couldn't get here on earth. building materials here include the shells of native animals, plants, stone, membranous film from animal sources etc. i'm sure pelagic people could come up with some really unique instruments

finally i guess we have to talk about the visors which can produce electronic tones (if those parts are still functional) and also have stored video clips and music files from precursors. i think longwing harpies have an EDM scene.

I don't mind anywhere ^^ I just prefer putting ramble posts here on my side, and art-related posts and questions on my main, for organizational purposes 👍

I usually tend to assign fitting Vocaloid and J-pop songs to charas based on lyrics/meaning, but thinking of the reverse (what kind of music the KagePro charas would listen to) is super fun to think about! 💖✨

I have a habit of liking to assign music tracks to my faves based on lyrics/meaning or vibes 🥰 💗

I like thinking of the HC idea that Kuroha, Konoha, and Ene's headphones are more than just for aesthetic/decoration, and that they're actually able to play music through them

I like to imagine that Saeru can connect the audio output to his headphones via Bluetooth 🎧🎵

I haven't thought much about the kinds of music the others would listen to, but I came up with some ideas:

Kuroha/Saeru: Japanese Traditional Music, Japanese Horror music, Dark Music, Dark Classical

Mary: Ambient Forest/Nature/River/Rain Sounds, Upbeat J-pop

Ene: Lo-fi Hip-Hop, Japanese EDM, Electronic, Chiptune, Video Game Music

Kuroha/Saeru 🖤💛🐍

When I think about the kinds of music Kuroha/Saeru would listen to (or at least, ones that I associate to him), I personally imagine traditional Japanese music with a dark and ominous ambience.

I feel like if he listened to music, it'd be the kinds that would be fitting as background music for a Japanese horror game and youkai (“a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and demons in Japanese folklore”)

Since Saeru is an ancient being (and older than the world itself in KagePro's lore), I headcanoned that he’d like traditional music and Dark music with dark and ominous vibes (ex. Dark Classical)

I love the usage of traditional instruments like the Japanese koto, shamisen, and flute...

I love music from the GBA and DS era and also chiptune music (music in the style of old games like the NES, Gameboy, etc.)

Admittedly I'm unsure of how to categorize these tracks into music genres because Touhou music is very varied.

I love Touhou music, so I love assigning them to my faves 🥰

Toby Fox (creator of Undertale and Deltarune) was inspired by ZUN and Touhou music.

I chose a couple of my fave Touhou tracks for Kuroha/Saeru.

Touhou music genres are all over the place. ZUN’s music is very varied in style depending on the track (ex. Classical, Jazz, Rock, Metal, Chiptune, Traditional, Piano, Orchestral, Electronic, Swing, Folk, etc.)

ZUN’s music has such a nice flair... Really nice musical style.

ZUN's use of trumpets in his music is called “Romantic trumpets” and fan-nicknamed “ZUNpets”

Some of my fave Touhou tracks are WAY too upbeat sounding for Saeru.

So I picked out a few fave Touhou tracks from my playlist that have dark and ominous vibes.

Not sure how to categorize some of them, so I'll call it "Dark Music"

Touhou music by ZUN is its own unique style tbh... Overall it spans many music genres (depends on the track)

Ok, I will try to do my best here, as it makes me really nervous to talk about my stuff. But this game made me really happy. English is not my first language, so sorry about mistakes. I hope it is OK I send it as a question/ask

Questions For Your OCs/SIs - Mei, my little northern star. Witch-doctor of the Kid pirates; Pharmacy student in her AU version

☕ If they were at a café, what would their breakfast order be? She is so obssesed with raw fish that she would eat it at any time. But I guess she would… behave, and order something ¿normal? Point is, she doesn't eat too much, and if she is with the full squad, she would probably steal from other plates. Especially Kid's.

🛒 If they were lost in a grocery store, where would you first look, and where would they actually be found? I would try first in cleaning products / cosmetic section, she would be probably there reading all the labels. Otherwise? The beverage section, trying to understand the diference between Whisky and Bourbon, just to get some information to bother Kid with.

🎶 What type of music do they enjoy, and what type would they beg you to turn off? EDM, completely. She is mad for electronic music, especialy if it has weird fusions with traditional vibes, like electrofolk, electroshamisen, 8-bit fusions and that kind of stuff. AU version is from Galicia, so she is completely OBSESSED with bagpipes, flutes and panderetas. She also likes so many other genres, the only one she doesn't like is jazz. Too chaotic for her.

💔 How do they handle disappointment? Do they do it well? She will be mostly fine, but it will hurt for a while. She is the kind of person that tries to hide it in order to not bothering others with her sadness.

💅 How would they like to be spoiled by their significant other? Phisically. She LOVES phisical contact and can be a fucking koala if allowed. So she loves being hugged and touched. She loves naps, massages and onsens… and if it comes with raw fish for dinner, the better.

💐 If they were famous in their universe, how would they treat their fans? She would love them. Kid wouldn't. But if she gets overwhelmed by it, it is ok. She manages her paralizing darts very well.

🎂 Do they enjoy their birthday? Why / why not? Yes, she does. She likes the attention and the party more than the gifs. For the AU version (student in UK), the only celebration she hates is Christmas, because she lost her dad around that date.

🎞️ What would their ideal movie night include? With friends, significant others, snacks, drinks, or without? A BIG screen and an ever bigger couch. Snacks? of course. But the perfect setup would be her crushed like the ham of a sandwitch between Kid and Killer. She would probably end up falling sleep, so the movie choice is not important for her.

😨 Do they have an irrational fear? What made them afraid? Yes, both versions (pirate and AU). She is really, really scared of electric storms, thunders and ligthning. When she was very small, around 7yo, she was alone in the middle of the countryside, next to her village. An electric storm started, she tried to get some cover, and a lightning almost hit her. It hit a tree very close instead, the tree exploded and she was deaf for a couple of hours, and terrified. So when a storm starts, she is completely paralized by fear.

🫂 How do they make up after a fight with their favourite person? At first she is quite patient about it… especially because her favourite person is Eustass Kid (and Killer). But she's also stubborn, and if she gets into a fight with Kid, she doesn't like the anger to last too long, so after a while she tries to fix it… even if it means more yelling. It is quite funny to see them argue, because… She's quite small, but also fearless. Anyway, if Mei and Kid fight…. Killer will also be there to help fixing it.

🪩 Do they like to dance? Are they good at it? She LOVES to dance. AU version loves electroswing and shuffling, and she is quite good. That's the main reason for her to be quick and agile, even if she is quite small and weak.

🪐 Have you as a creator used them in any other fandom universe? What changes were made to suit them better? I have two versions of Mei. The pirate one, some kind of witch/doctor, specialist in poisons and herbs; and the AU London University version. But at the end of the day, they are quite similar. I used her also for another story based on Shuten Doji and Ibaraki Doji (who they REMIND ME A LOT OF KID AND KILLER). She's a miko in this story.

🍖 Do they have beef with anything that simply doesn't make sense? Inanimate objects, food groups, a particular song? I… don't remember right now anything that she hates… More like the contrary, there is something which she is obsessely in love with: ducks. She has a huge collection of rubber ducks, and she loves to hide them for people to find them as a surprise. AU Kid and Killer have found little ducklings EVERYWHERE in the house.

I am literally obsessed with the idea of a witch doctor kid pirate, and I am loving Mei so so so much!!

Raw fish for breakfast? Our OCs would be besties. Immediately, instantly besties. And getting bourbon to bother Kid with? An absolute classic.

Jazz truly is extremely chaotic. I don't blame her When she goes clubbing with the Kid Pirates, she's going to go crazy with EDM. If she was to bother any of the Kid Pirates when she's going through heartbreak, who would it be? I can see Bubblegum, House, Wire, and Killer being those who'll quietly seek her out. Kid and Heat are loud about it.

I am loving all of these beautiful answers, especially the love of ducks. That just makes me extremely happy. Thank you for sending me some beautiful info about your OC. I love her already.
