Mr. Frog, I have a thought experiment I thought you might enjoy chewing on?

My friend has a copy of Speed on VHS, a VCR, and a CRT tube TV. I challenged him to stream Speed to us over a Discord video call by pointing a webcam at the CRT, and he said it wouldn't work because the lighting and reflections would make it too difficult to see the CRT screen.

Ignoring the artifacts introduced by streaming a CRT (screen flicker/frame roll/whatever you call it, compression artifacts, etc), how would you light one to be recorded with enough clarity to be able to watch the content being played on the TV? In this case, the TV is on one of those ceiling mounted racks in the corner of the room, like what used to be in some classrooms and waiting rooms back before LED/LCD panels got cheap.

TVs are emissive, so the trick is not how to light them, but how to block light from causing interference.

The easy answer is a pitch black room, but that isn't always possible.

But even a moderately dark room is usually fine. The closer the camera is to the TV, the brighter the TV will be relative to the other lights. And since light is competitive, if your room lights are fairly dim, and your camera is close to the TV, it should capture pretty well. The light from the TV will outcompete all the other room lights.

That won't stop specular highlights though.

These are direct reflections caused by light sources. They ignore the competitive light thing due to fancy science.

So you may have to play with angles. If you can make sure all light sources are behind the screen, that would be optimal. But you just need those specular sources to not be reflecting directly off the TV and into the camera. Photographers have to play with angles like this to photograph people with glasses. We just move the lights around until we can't see them reflecting.

If that isn't possible, you may have to create a hood for your display. You can google "monitor hood" to see the typical design, but you can just use cardboard from a shipping box. Just tape a square to the side or sides that need to block direct reflections.

You could even put a blanket over the TV and camera.

And if you do want to get rid of flickering and banding...

The best way to capture CRT is to match frame rate and shutter speed.

NTSC (North America) is roughly 60Hz and PAL (UK/Europe) is 50Hz.

So you'd need a camera that can do 60fps and has the ability to adjust the shutter speed to a multiple of 60. 1/60 or 1/120 usually. Not all webcams have this control, so you may not be able to cancel out these artifacts.

Gundam Calibarn watch!

Been hit hard by the Witch from Mercury brainworms lately, so when I first saw this junker watch for sale I thought it could make for a fun gundam project!

The watch looked fine in the sale listing, but its actual condition wasn't great- the spring bars holding the straps had rusted and gotten stuck, and the straps had to be cut away to access and dislodge the bars.

The gasket had also melted, and the inside of the casing was covered with some sort of fishy-smelling residue. Thankfully though, the main watch module was still functional.

It took a good while to clean everything up and buff out the scratches, but once that was done I could get started on the customisation!

First off, the old yellowed straps were replaced with a fresh white silicone strap to match the calibarn. I also designed a custom sticker for the watch face based on some gundam decals. It took many attempts to apply the sticker without air bubbles forming, but the final result was worth it!

For the permet effects, I cut up some rainbow holographic film and applied it the lcd screen. The effect is subtle most of the time, so the watch is still easy to read. However, it shines beautifully when it catches the light!

All in all, I'm pretty happy with how this project turned out! The total cost of the watch + materials was much cheaper than if I had gotten the same watch brand-new, and it's always a great feeling to clean up something old for use again.

If you want to try making your own, I recommend using a junk/secondhand watch for this - I nearly broke my watch fiddling around with it, so please don't do this with anything expensive! There are plenty of tutorials on youtube for any customisations you want to make, so explore around and see what works for you!

ELECTRONICS

SYMPTOMS: doesn't turn on

LIKELY CAUSE: extremely dead battery

STEPS TAKEN: disassembled, identified component to replace (LR41 cell battery), identified corroded battery terminal

NEXT STEPS: procure replacement battery, clean/possibly resolder terminal

SYMPTOMS: scratched LCD screen cover, debris on underside of screen, wrinkled/worn cover

Disassembly and diagnosis was easy because this is a really simple piece of hardware made cheap as a Happy Meal Toy. 4 case screws had proprietary heads but luckily the trihead screwdriver I have for Nintendo shit sort of worked on them.

I am crossing my fingers that once I buy a replacement battery and install it the thing will work good as new, because there's basically no other part in this that is in the slightest bit user-serviceable so if it doesnt work after that I'm shit out of luck. I'm optimistic though. It really doesn't seem like anything else on here should have a reason to be broken.

The AESTHETIC repair is probably going to be more complicated... because I don't think the image used as the skin for this exists anywhere else.

The render of Big is his official art in Sonic Heroes, but I can't find any other example of that background art ANYWHERE. It looks like Seaside Hill but I can't find any other examples of anything remotely like what's in this image. So all I have is this.

My thought was, if I could find the source image used as the skin for this or even the separate assets combined to make it, I could recreate it and then take it to a print shop to talk about sizing and get it reprinted. But that's starting to look impossible. I made a Reddit post in the hopes that someone will recognize it but so far it has one upvote and nothing else so I'm not holding my breath.

So, I think what I might actually do is just get a high quality scan of the toy I have and then try to digitally clean up the wrinkles and wear etc. I have a scanner so this should be doable.

I'll see how the scan comes out and go from there. If it's workable, I'll stop worrying about finding the original image.

So the to-do list is pretty much: replace battery, repair terminal, buff out scratches on screen, scan the cover, and if that scan is good enough, touch it up digitally and then get it professionally reprinted. 👍

Indonesia unveiled the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia Saturday, a joint-project between Indonesia and China funded at 75% by the Chinese State-owned China Development Bank and the remaining 25% was funded by Private Equity from Indonesian and Chinese shareholders. The Project is part of China's increasingly popular Belt & Road Initiative (BRI).

Though the initial project was projected to cost $6 Billion, some cost overruns mostly from land compensation costs raised the bill by another $1.2 Billion. Though by American and European standards, this would be a relatively small overrun.

The new high-speed railway connects Jakarta, a city of more than 10 million, with Bandung, an educational and technology of 2.5 million, with four stops: Halim, Karawang, Padalarang, Tegalluar.

The train four times daily, with a maximum capacity of 600 passengers and travels at speeds in excess of 350kmh (218mph), and covering a total of 142km (88mi).

The new train cuts the travel time between Jakarta's Halim station and Bandung's Padalarang from roughly 3 hours to just over 30 minutes, a truly stunning improvement for these rapidly growing and developing cities.

The high-speed train's cars are equipped with modern amenities including spacious seating, power outlets, and LCD screens while the ride is smooth, with few bumps.

Though a Western media blitz intended to deligitimize the project in recent weeks, actual Indonesian people's excitement about the project is evident.
