Amazing sharksuckers
Echeneis naucrates, the slender sharksucker, is one of the most remarkable fishes, that gets imported for marine aquaria. And I still remember my surprise, at seeing these amazing animals, on sale in a retailers tank, as though they were goldfish. Using their sucker, that is shared by all members of the remora family,, they were attaching themselves to the front pane of the glass. Having weakly developed swim bladders, sharksuckers will instinctively attach themselves to aquarium glass, in the absence of a larger, cruising host animal. This is less unnatural than it sounds, because wild E. naucrates are able to live without accompanying larger animals.
This sucker structure is, in fact, a highly modified dorsal fin, which they use to affix themselves upon passing fishes, sharks and sea turtles. E. naucrates are one of the few animals humans use, to help them fish prey for themselves. Native peoples obtained wild sharksuckers, and easily kept them alive in cages, placed in the sea. Tied to a line by its caudal peduncle, a sharksucker was released into the sea, where it attaches to a larger animal, which was then reeled in as prey. Other interactions between wild sharksuckers and humans, include situations where a sharksucker chooses a passing scuba diver as a host, or attaches to a boat as though it were a living animal.
At their maximum length, adult E. naucrates reportedly grow to 110 centimeters, or 44 inches. 65 centimeters or 26 inches, is a more commonly encountered adult size. As juveniles, they function as cleaner fishes on the reef, but the alult fishes are emphatically predators, able to catch other fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. They also consume the scraps of food that are produced as waste, by the larger animals they affix themselves to by habit. Completely harmless though they are to sessile invertebrates like clams and corals, sharksuckers will prey on any animal they can swallow, thetefore ruling out small fishes and crustaceans as tank companions. In the aquarium the voracious sharksuckers are easily fed on an ordinary meaty diet.

Escabeche legsfie
After years to taking pictures with effigies of Butanding (Whale Sharks / Rhincodon typus) in various museums, I finally was able to swim with them in Barangay Tan-Awan of the Municipality of Oslob, Province of Cebú. The whale sharks were all juveniles, with their length ranging from 4 to 6 meters long, as adults can grow up to 18 meters in length.
The Philippines has always been a migratory route of the whale sharks, and Oslob was a major area for these gigantic fishes. Since the 1980s, the local fishermen saw these creatures as pests, as they would end up entangled and destroying their nets and scare off their catch.
By 2011, a Tan-awan fisherman named Jerson Soriano started feeding the whale sharks with krill and the creatures became docile towards him and other fishermen.
Other areas known for whale shark interactions are Dumaguete in Negros Oriental, Donsol in Sorsogon, Lila and Panglao in Bohol.
Aside from the common name of butandíng, the whale shark has other regional names throughout the Philippines:
Bisayâ: tawiki and tuki-tuki
Boholano: balilan
Tagálog: tuku
Zambal: kulwano
This picture was taken circa 2024, during my Christmas vacation to swim with the Butanding
Disclaimer:
No animals were harmed in the making of this selfie.
Postscript:
Although tourists come to Oslob to swim with the wild whale sharks; however the multitude of resorts, souvenir stores and restaurants tend to have the visitors forget that the rest of the area has a thriving natural ecosystem with many wild animals abound.
There is the Oslob Macaque Sanctuary, where people interact with the Unggoy (Philippine long-tailed macaque / Macaca fascicularis philippensis).
While swimming with the whale sharks, the giants are surrounded by shoals of Komi (Rémora / Echeneis naucrates), while above are flying Bilitsina or Balinsasayaw (Philippine Swiftlet / Aerodramus mearnsi), Kanaway (Herring gull / Larus argentatus), and Larid (Aleutian tern / Onychoprion aleuticus) trying to grab a meal from the Oyap (krill / Acetes sibogae) used to feed the Butanding.
In the garden of our hostel, I was able to observe a large Úmang (Morgan's hermit crab / Calcinus morgani) ambling about, while Dugos (Honey Bees / Apis Mellifera) and Tamsi or Tawsi (Garden Sunbird / Cinnyris jugularis) flit about the flowers. And yes I did see several Goryon or Tagmaya (Eurasian Tree Sparrow / Passer montanus) and Alimukon or Tukmo (Zebra Dove / Geopelia striata) but they are commonly seen all over Cebú and in other Philippine towns.
On the road towards Oslob and back to Cebú City, I have seen flocks of Tabol Atabong or Tabong (Chinese Egret / Egretta eulophotes) or (Eastern Reef Egret / Egretta sacra) and Tabong (Great Egret / Ardea alba) scrounging for food in the rice fields, while several Siloy (Black Shama / 𝘊𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴) dining on the fruit of the papaya trees (Carica papaya) growing on the roadside.
Maybe I should join a bird-watching club?

Live sharksucker (Echeneis naucrates)
The live sharksucker is a species of marine fish in the family Echeneidae, the remoras. The species is considered as circumtropical, as it occurs in all tropical and warm temperate waters around the world, except for the eastern Pacific. The species can be found close to the coast, as well as offshore at a maximum depth of 50 m. A live sharksucker is known to attach itself temporarily by its modified dorsal fin used as a sucking disc to various hosts, such as sharks, rays, large bony fishes, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, ships, and even sometimes scubadivers.E. naucrates is a medium-sized fish which can grow up to 110 cm length.

It is common to coastal tropical and subtropical waters around the world, including brackish habitats. Genetic analyses have revealed substantial variation within this species, with populations from the western Atlantic Ocean isolated and distinct from those in the rest of its range. The blacktip shark has a stout, fusiform body with a pointed snout, long gill slits, and no ridge between the dorsal fins. Most individuals have black tips or edges on the pectoral, dorsal, pelvic, and caudal fins. It usually attains a length of 1.5 m (4.9 ft).Blacktip sharks showing curiosity towards divers has been reported, but they remain at a safe distance. Under most circumstances, these timid sharks are not regarded as highly dangerous to humans. However, they may become aggressive in the presence of food, and their size and speed invite respect. Like the spinner shark, the blacktip shark is known to leap out of the water and spin three or four times about its axis before landing. Some of these jumps are the end product of feeding runs, in which the shark corkscrews vertically through schools of small fish and its momentum launches it into the air. Observations in the Bahamas suggest that blacktip sharks may also jump out of the water to dislodge attached sharksuckers (Echeneis naucrates). https://www.instagram.com/p/B5VjBv5hvtV/?igshid=10x4hzudlvwi

Commensalism
Tumblr media
Commensalism
PARASITISM may be thought as the condition of life which is normal and necessary for an organism nourishing itself at the trouble of another---called the host-without destroying it like the predator will its prey. Actually, there's a complete group of transitions between the two conditions. In order to live regularly on its coordinator, the parasite, save in exceptional conditions, remains in long-term contact with it, perhaps on its outer surface, perhaps within it. Parasitism is then an association, generally constant, between two different organisms, one which lives at the trouble of the other.
Tumblr media
commensalism   The association comes with an essentially unilateral character: it's important to the parasite, which dies for insufficient nourishment if separated from the coordinator; it isn't whatsoever essential to the variety. The business of the parasite is improved in line with the conditions under which it lives on the sponsor: version is the hallmark of parasitism. But you can picture, and there exist in fact, associations devoid of the same unilateral persona: two kinds associating regularly but without the main one living on the other. One of these may indeed gain in safeguard or nutrition without the other's gaining any gain. These organizations are grouped under the word commensalism. In some of them, which come under the going of mutualism, there are evidently reciprocal advantages for both associates. Furthermore, the standard localization of 1 species within the interior of a different one may have a particular spatial significance without any physiological relationship being involved. Associations of this characteristics come under the proceeding of inquilinism. It really is clear that we now have many transitions between these organizations and parasitism which is no more than a unilateral deviation from them. The study of commensalism, inquilinism and mutualism is then the natural prelude compared to that of parasitism and can allow us to understand the diversity of the human relationships which may become established between two types. Virtually identical in meaning to commensalism is the word synergy, which includes been suggested for several particular circumstances. Synergy suggests, however, more than a simple spatial romantic relationship, which will be a much more popular phenomenon. There is, indeed, in the grouping of organisms, an over-all romantic relationship, closely bound up with the laws and regulations of the interdependence, which is beyond the scope of today's work and gives rise to the general facies of flora and fauna, that is, organic and natural populations. It leads to the particular botanists call formations of crops; the zoologist will easily find analogous groupings which are termed bioca:noses. A coral reef comprises a significant association of the kind, which includes a certain consistent stableness among all the creatures which live there and come constantly into contact. It would be possible to cite from the ocean shores of Europe many other associations of the same kind but more limited, each comprising a definite society. The terrestrial fauna shows them equally clearly;we shall have to come back to those worried about the sociable insects, particularly ants and termites. On an isolated seed, particularly a tree, a complete series of kinds associates regularly. These basic associations, however, involve an extremely loose relationship, significantly less correct than that denoted by the word commensalism.
COMMENSALISM IN Sea ANIMALS
Commensalism implies a normal association between two types, recurring constantly in widely separated localities. On research, it is found that this simple relationship includes very marked improvements, particularly of a psychophysiological nature. The double threat of research into this kind of phenomenon lays, on the main one side, in getting to them preconceived ideas of too subjective nature, bordering by using an illusory anthropomorphism and, on the other side, in trying to reduce intricate facts to simple primary reactions. Why don't we consider the classical circumstance of the commensalism of sharks and the pilot seafood (Naucrates ductor) or the remora (Echeneis remora). These scombrids accompany the sharks, the remora attaching itself to them temporarily by means of its dorsal fin, improved to create a sucker. This function of life presupposes a very precise version of nervous reflexes which can be surmised whenever a remora and a Carcharias are seen together, as I have seen them within an aquarium at Bermuda.
Tumblr media
commensalism   The first follows the other as a bit of iron does indeed a magnet, obeying instantly the incessant and irregular changes of way shown by the shark in an aquarium. The synchronism of the remora's swimming start of the shark must be associated with an in-depth adaptation of sensory organs and nerve centers, a version as significant as that of the sucker in the morphological field. Out of this case, it is clear that the reality of commensalism must be researched from life, and so far as possible through a test. Apparently fairly simple, but probably highly complex, is the similar association between anemones and fishes known in many localities in tropical seas, and studied carefully by Sluiter 48 in Batavia. A seafood of the genus Trachichthys (Amphiprion) always remains amidst the tentacles of a large anemone. Plate, in addition, has seen this connection in debt Sea, where in fact the anemone is, corresponding to him, Crambactis arabica, more than 30 cm. in diameter. In case the anemone closes up, the seafood is imprisoned and momentarily vanishes within its intestinal cavity. Now, it is merely necessary to be there when an anemone's victim comes into connection with the tentacles and is also enclosed within these to observe how formidable contact with the nematocysts can be. The fishes cited here must thus own an immunity from the urticarious poisons of the anemones that they regular, an immunity which includes, no doubt, been gradually attained and which, by itself only, witnesses to the very definite nature of a link which is apparently purely casual. This association satisfies two different needs, nutrition, and protection. Regarding diet, the authors do not give very exact information but it might be supposed that whenever the anemone engulfs its prey and, at the same time, closes within the seafood, the second option gets a talk about of the meals. As for safety, Sluiter has shown it directly. For several months he could keep living Trachichthys in an aquarium where he had located carnivorous fishes and also the anemone. The Trachichthys never remaining the latter. Alternatively, when placed by itself with the carnivorous varieties within an aquarium they were always eaten after a couple of hours. The anemone, then, truly shelters the seafood. Thus here we have a good example of a highly efficient association comprising correct physiological immunitand, very probably, co-ordination of the reflexes of both associates. It really is evident a similar interpretation must get to a link, easily observed on People from France coasts, between acraspedote medusae, specifically, Rhizostoma cuvieri, and the amphipod Hyperina medusarutn, or young fishes, mainly Caranx trachurus. Hyperina swims in shoals under the umbrella of the Medusa and can take shelter in the sub-genital cavities. Caranx varieties fair sized shoals with the same behavior, never departing the medusa and sometimes taking refuge within it, as do the amphipods. Exactly the same association has been met with in very distant regions. It's been found between a Caranx and a crambessid in the Gambier Islands in the Australian Pacific by Seurat, and between Caranx melampygus and Crambessa palmipes near Mauritius by LuneP6. The customers of the genus Physalia, whose nematocysts are specifically urticarious, are frequently combined with little fishes (Nomeus gronovii) related to Caranx and apparently immune to the poison of the siphonophore;* they evidently derive safety from its closeness and possibly gain sharing its prey. Associations of this type are very common on coral reefs. Coutiere 22 has seen lots of examples at Djibouti. A clear pontoniid prawn, Periclimenes, constantly remains, like the fishes cited above, within the area of protection developed by the tentacles of a big anemone; anchovies, Engraulis, take refuge amongst the long spines of the sea urchin, Diadema setosum; a huge asteroid, Cu/cita, permanen~ly shelters a hippolytid prawn beneath its disc. Many alpheids are in the shelter of madrepore corals (Pocillopora, Porites, etc.). Read the full article

Remoras (Echeneidae) are known to attach to several types of marine vertebrates, including fishes, turtles, and mammals (review in O'Toole, 2002). Remoras may benefit from this association in several ways, including transport, feeding opportunities, and protection from predators (e.g., Alling, 1985; Fertl & Landry, 2002; O'Toole, 2002). Some remora species attach to a diverse array of hosts, whereas others use a particular host type. For instance, the sharksucker (Echeneis naucrates) is the most versatile species among the remoras (O'Toole, 2002), and is recorded both in oceanic islands and on the coast. It may even enter estuarine waters (Santos & Sazima, 2005). The sharksucker free-swims in the water column feeding on small fishes and plankton (O'Toole, 2002) and attaches to a wide array of hosts (O'Toole, 2002). Its versatility includes the role of a station-based cleaner (Sazima et al., 1999) On the other hand, the common remora (Remora remora) seems strictly an oceanic species, which attaches mostly to large pelagic vertebrates such as leatherback turtles, manta and devil rays, and whale sharks (O'Toole, 2002). Its occurrence on reef-dwelling turtles at oceanic islands only strengthens the view on the pelagic habits of this remora species. Remora remora is known to ram-filter plankton while attached to whale sharks (Clarke & Nelson, 1997). Post by: @dannyl0mas Photo by: @wildestanimal _____________ Want to learn more?
