It’s an open secret in fashion. Unsold inventory goes to the incinerator; excess handbags are slashed so they can’t be resold; perfectly usable products are sent to the landfill to avoid discounts and flash sales. The European Union wants to put an end to these unsustainable practices. On Monday, [December 4, 2023], it banned the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear.
“It is time to end the model of ‘take, make, dispose’ that is so harmful to our planet, our health and our economy,” MEP Alessandra Moretti said in a statement. “Banning the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear will contribute to a shift in the way fast fashion manufacturers produce their goods.”
This comes as part of a broader push to tighten sustainable fashion legislation, with new policies around ecodesign, greenwashing and textile waste phasing in over the next few years. The ban on destroying unsold goods will be among the longer lead times: large businesses have two years to comply, and SMEs have been granted up to six years. It’s not yet clear on whether the ban applies to companies headquartered in the EU, or any that operate there, as well as how this ban might impact regions outside of Europe.
For many, this is a welcome decision that indirectly tackles the controversial topics of overproduction and degrowth. Policymakers may not be directly telling brands to produce less, or placing limits on how many units they can make each year, but they are penalising those overproducing, which is a step in the right direction, says Eco-Age sustainability consultant Philippa Grogan. “This has been a dirty secret of the fashion industry for so long. The ban won’t end overproduction on its own, but hopefully it will compel brands to be better organised, more responsible and less greedy.”
Clarifications to come
There are some kinks to iron out, says Scott Lipinski, CEO of Fashion Council Germany and the European Fashion Alliance (EFA). The EFA is calling on the EU to clarify what it means by both “unsold goods” and “destruction”. Unsold goods, to the EFA, mean they are fit for consumption or sale (excluding counterfeits, samples or prototypes)...
The question of what happens to these unsold goods if they are not destroyed is yet to be answered. “Will they be shipped around the world? Will they be reused as deadstock or shredded and downcycled? Will outlet stores have an abundance of stock to sell?” asks Grogan.
Large companies will also have to disclose how many unsold consumer products they discard each year and why, a rule the EU is hoping will curb overproduction and destruction...
Could this shift supply chains?
For Dio Kurazawa, founder of sustainable fashion consultancy The Bear Scouts, this is an opportunity for brands to increase supply chain agility and wean themselves off the wholesale model so many rely on. “This is the time to get behind innovations like pre-order and on-demand manufacturing,” he says. “It’s a chance for brands to play with AI to understand the future of forecasting. Technology can help brands be more intentional with what they make, so they have less unsold goods in the first place.”
Grogan is equally optimistic about what this could mean for sustainable fashion in general. “It’s great to see that this is more ambitious than the EU’s original proposal and that it specifically calls out textiles. It demonstrates a willingness from policymakers to create a more robust system,” she says. “Banning the destruction of unsold goods might make brands rethink their production models and possibly better forecast their collections.”
One of the outstanding questions is over enforcement. Time and again, brands have used the lack of supply chain transparency in fashion as an excuse for bad behaviour. Part of the challenge with the EU’s new ban will be proving that brands are destroying unsold goods, not to mention how they’re doing it and to what extent, says Kurazawa. “Someone obviously knows what is happening and where, but will the EU?”"

Tumblr media
we all know the story, you adore a doll line and you can't WAIT for new releases... only to find out that it's been discontinued.
today i want to introduce two doll lines that seem SO damn promising only to be discontinued before they were even able to release a second wave.
Tumblr media
Meet Zeenie. Produced in 2013 by independent designers Hansini and Laxmi Wadhwani, they were a group of 6 highly articulated (24 points of articulation) 12 inch tall dolls. The girls were fashionable eco-warriors who each fought for their own environmental cause AND each doll (and their packaging!) are made from eco-friendly and recyclable materials!!
Oh and if you're wondering how it came to be?
(via their original Kickstarter) - “The concept and mission behind Zeenie Dollz started with a sketch by Hansini Wadhwani, the creator, designer and inventor of the series. Hansini showed her mother, Laxmi Wadhwani, the first sketch of a girl with flowing blue hair and explained that her persona was that of Mother Earth. With overwhelming support and belief in the concept, Laxmi leveraged her years of experience in the textile industry to bring Zennia, the first doll in the series, to life. From there, the mother-daughter duo have worked together through every step of the creative process to take a beautiful sketch, a meaningful cause and a passion for the environment, and merge it into the Zeenie Dollz series.” Please I am not crying you're crying...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They only ever released the original 6 dolls but they were available to purchase online up until 2019.
Tumblr media
Now let's look at B-Kind! B-Kind was produced by Jada Toys (creator of Cutie Pops) in 2021 along with the non-profit company Kindess.org.
Similar to Zeenie, the dolls were 12.5 inches tall with 11 points of articulation and made from eco-friendly recyclable materials. They released 5 dolls initially (Brianna, Koral, Ivy, Nora & Daisy) and added a 6th doll (Hope) to the lineup. Each doll fought from a particular cause ranging from ending bullying, to saving the oceans, and came with a DIY kit that reflected the doll's unique passions. Brianna even comes with a DIY for an additional outfit!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Daisy, Brianna and Nora all got a second release with a refreshed face-up and a new outfit but unlike the first release these dolls did not come with DIY kits. There were also little dolls produced that were 6 inches tall with 5 points of articulation that looked similar to Brianna, Koral, and Ivy.
Tumblr media
The dolls were speculated to be discontinued as the B-Kind website was taken down and the Facebook page stopped posting in 2023.
So what the hell? They were promising doll lines with unique concepts, good articulation and adorable dolls - why would they be discontinued? The sad truth is that the doll industry is a RUTHLESS one! and as sweet as a doll line created by a mother & daughter duo is, they don't stand a chance when their opponents are Mattel and MGA Entertainment. A doll being successful and obtaining multiple years of fresh releases doesn't really rely on quality and instead on how much shelf space they can get in stores. When you think about the sheer amount of space Mattel and MGA Entertainment take up alone, you can see how the system is rigged against them.
I hope that one day we can have better avenues to purchase dolls that don't rely on trying to compete with an industry giant who has been unbeatable for over a century. It's genuinely a travesty that dolls with as much heart as these dolls do fail because success is simply an impossible feat.

🧥 How to make your wardrobe more sustainable
Getting dressed is one of the first things we do each day — but how often do we stop and think about the environmental and social impact of what we wear?
The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters globally, and fast fashion has made it easier (and cheaper) than ever to buy more, wear less, and throw away too soon. But there are small, meaningful steps we can take to make our clothing choices more conscious — for the planet, for the people behind the clothes, and for our wallets.
Let’s break it down into a few practical ideas.
👕 Choose second-hand or swap with friends
Buying second-hand clothes is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce waste. Whether it’s through thrift stores, vintage markets, or online platforms, you can give clothes a second life — and often find unique pieces no longer in mainstream production.
Another fun option? Organize a clothing swap with your friends. It’s social, sustainable, and budget-friendly.
👖 Take care of what you already own
Extending the life of your clothes is crucial. Most of the environmental impact of a piece of clothing happens before you even wear it — through production, transport, and packaging.
Here are a few simple habits to adopt:
Wash at lower temperatures (30°C is usually enough)
Avoid the dryer whenever possible — air drying saves energy and protects fabrics
Learn basic repair skills like sewing buttons or fixing small holes
Store seasonal clothes properly to avoid damage and moths
👗 Buy less, but better
It can be tempting to buy 5 trendy shirts for the price of one quality one. But fast fashion tends to fall apart quickly — and comes at a higher cost for workers and the environment.
Instead, consider the “30 wears” rule: before buying something, ask yourself — will I wear this at least 30 times?
Opt for timeless pieces, neutral colors, and quality materials that last. If your budget allows, support small brands that value ethical production and fair wages.
🧵 Get creative and upcycle
Upcycling is a fun way to reinvent your clothes instead of throwing them away. Turn an old pair of jeans into a bag, or crop a worn-out t-shirt into a tank top. You don’t need to be a designer — just a bit of imagination and some scissors can go a long way.
There are tons of tutorials online to get inspired!
🌍 Why it matters
Making your wardrobe more sustainable doesn’t mean becoming a minimalist overnight or spending a fortune on eco-labels. It’s about being intentional and slowing down our consumption patterns.
When we reuse, repair, and reduce, we also:
Save water and energy
Decrease textile waste in landfills
Avoid supporting exploitative labor conditions
Express our values through what we wear
Sustainable fashion is not about perfection — it’s about awareness and progress. Let your style reflect not just who you are, but the world you want to help build.
