Oh shit! I just noticed Godspeed You! Black Emperor put the lost tape "all lights fucked on the hairy amp drooling" on Bandcamp (2 years ago). This was Efrim's solo project before GY!BE formed. It was lost for decades until piracy saved it in 2022.
"this was a retirement letter,
recorded spring/summer/fall summer of 1993.
all of it by efrim, and a little bass from mauro.
vocals on $13.13 by d.c., acoustic gtr. snippet and backwards hash by dan-o.
no relation to the band that followed.
be gentle.
xoxoxox efrim
This was a 2-tape set, handmade and sold at a few very underground shows in 1993. Only 33 were made. By the time it was a legend among GY!BE fans but no one could find one however hard they looked. It was assumed lost to time.
And now it's back on Godspeed's music store page (but not streaming which is why I didn't notice it) where the band can get paid for it again. Scary to put such early experimental DIY work out there, but it's so important to seeing who Efrim Menuck would become as a musician.

323: Black Ox Orkestar // Ver Tanzt?
Tumblr media
Ver Tanzt? Black Ox Orkestar 2004, Constellation (Bandcamp)
Early Constellation releases frequently had a rough, industrial texture to their packaging that added to the sense they’d emerged from some secretive turn-of-the-century worker’s collective that survived hidden in the ruins of Montreal’s Farine Five Roses plant, growing weirder by the decade. Cryptic imagery, half-mystic, half-agit-prop, set against photography of crumbling brickwork and rusted metal, titles as long as your arm and far hairier. The design of Black Ox Orkestar’s Ver Tanzt? (Yiddish: Who’s Dancing?) is a perfectly representative example, a white maze on black field containing at its centre an antique symbol.
Most of Black Ox Orkestar’s core members are best known for their tours of duty with A Silver Mt. Zion: the elevator pitch for the Orkestar is that they excavate the klezmer and Jewish classical roots at the bottom of the music of the Efrim/Godspeed/Mt. Zion scene, presenting it in a more traditional form while retaining a degree of Constellation signature sooty intensity. The Orkestar occasionally swirl up into the kind of shrieking violin catharsis that Godspeed songs are known for, but these moments are brief, bursts of sudden flame that die back down to flickers of candlelight. They play these ancient melodies with a skittering energy derived from free jazz and avant-garde chamber music—new methods of evoking the unease, sorrow, and passionate endurance that have been a part of this art for centuries and beyond.
It’s difficult to speak of Jewish art in this moment without the spectre of the Israeli state’s ongoing genocide in Palestine surfacing. It’s to Black Ox Orkestrar’s immense credit that even 20 years ago they recognized the sickness that was growing in that state. The booklet packaged with Ver Tanzt? includes the lyrics to the title track (by vocalist Scott Levine Gilmore) in Yiddish and English, reproduced below:
Who’s Dancing? Who’s dancing here On the walls of Jerusalem? A Jew? A hangman? A young soldier. He dances a hora on Arab bones. He sings over Arab graves. “There’s no peace, no truth. All oaths are broken.” Do the oppressed mirror the oppressor? The beaten child is in the street with fists And the sad race of wise men Sends brutes To the border.

TDOV2024 has officially rolled around in Australian hours. It's been a rough one, and I don't think I'll have any pics of myself to post this year.
I've said a few times TERFS aren't welcome on my blog, and I'd like to put forth that neither are Zionists. There is still an active genocide going on in Palestine and here are a few ways you can help.

I was so happy when I saw this at their show in Minneapolis a few years ago. I wish I had gotten a picture of my own. And when I was in the balcony a month or two later in Milwaukee, I knew what it said even though I was too far to see anything but the pink tape.
GY!BE has not stopped surprising and delighting me since I first started listening in 2005.

"Sunny" isn't Comrade Sunny's actual name. Her full name is Ephraim Ahab Menuck. I've decided on this based upon a handful of references that I feel connect together well sonically as a name.
"Ephraim" is a nod to The Lighthouse, and Ephraim Winslow, one of the two characters in the movie. The Lighthouse is one of my favorite films and the aesthetics of it are something Incredibly dear to me.. I truly adore it, so to have a way to pay homage to it with her is very lovely.
"Ahab" is of course a reference to Captain Ahab of Moby Dick fame. A seafaring captain reference for an ex-Zailor, hm? And her ambition, chasing after whatever Whitlock was going for, could almost be seen as a white whale, though it may be realer than expected! Though it may well spell her downfall, too.
"Menuck" is more niche, but it is a genuine nod to Efrim Menuck [who also inspired the first name...] a notable member of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, one of my favorite bands. The band's music has genuinely changed my life, and I do not know who I'd be without them.... A lot of their moody atmospheres I also find fitting for the image of a long night at Zee.
She is called Sunny because she was far, far too optimistic when she first began Zailing.
