Artist Research: James Turrell
„It was important that people come to value light as we value gold, silver, paintings and objects."
— James Turrell
☆ Considered a “Master of Light”, James Turrell is an American artist known for his artistry within the light and space movement. Turrell often creates ambient environments, producing art installations that mix both artificial and natural lighting through intriguing processes such as openings in ceilings, transforming interior spaces by completely shifting the atmosphere through ever-changing and shifting colour.
"James Turrell invented signature forms that intensified the experience of sight and perception."
"Turrell built environments with strategic apertures and hidden LED displays calculated to “bring the cosmos down” into the viewers’ space."
- Mancoff, Debra N.. "James Turrell". Encyclopedia Britannica, 2 Jun. 2024,
☆ Rather than having his work be depictions of paintings of light, Turrell wanted his work to actually be light as he enjoyed the materiality, substance and "grand elixir" in which the materiality of light and the sun is to human beings.
☆ Turrell was deeply inspired and influenced by the materiality of light as a medium and especially in the function of human perception!
☆ Turrell feels people don't really submit to the (contemporary) art and enter the realm created by the artist -in this case James Turrell- which is an important step and reward within his work that the viewer may step into his work and become emersed within his atmospheric pieces.
☆ As James followed in his father's (Archibald Milton Turrell, was an aeronautical engineer and educator.) footsteps of as a young man he found that experiencing different views of light within the sky at high altitudes as he piloted planes would come to inspire his future works.
☆ Turrell coined the term "Architecture of space" which are seen to be a form of structures developed to erase themselves allowing the viewer to focus on the space between the walls, as well as structures and experience the atmosphere in which fills the spaces. An experience of perception!

1438; Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui
Along with Pachacuti's ruling, the construction of Machu Picchu was created as the new emperor's latest royal estate. He intended the building to be a place where he could host feasts, perform religious ceremonies, and administer the affairs.
Macchu Picchu sits alongside the Urubamba River and has brought a lot of practicality and new architectural designs to the community around them. The site contains housing, religious shrines, fountains, and terraces, which all contain many forms of Incan art such as carved rocks. The more laborious and tedious the rock carving the greater status. The water system along the new construction was also vital for agriculture, proper stone channels ensured rainfall, and springs drained into local stone fountains.

'I need to make things. The physical interaction with the medium has a curative effect. I need the physical acting out. I need to have these objects exist in relation to my body.' Louise Bourgeois (quoted in Kellein 2006, p.16.)

Bio from Tate
Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (1911 – 2010) was a French-American artist. Although she is best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, Bourgeois was also a prolific painter and printmaker. She explored a variety of themes over the course of her long career including domesticity and the family, sexuality and the body, as well as death and the unconscious. These themes connect to events from her childhood which she considered to be a therapeutic process. Although Bourgeois exhibited with the Abstract Expressionists and her work has much in common with Surrealism and Feminist art, she was not formally affiliated with a particular artistic movement.
Concept & Mood Board Create a simple concept for your installation & make a mood board for visual inspiration
Concept Ideas:
Project different Louise Bourgeois works on to a miniature scene set up on the desk in my small home office/studio space, using found objects from the space, and referencing some of the architectures of Bourgeois’ works and the aesthetic of her home/studio space
Emerging perhaps in part from my background in social work and past job providing counseling to young children living with parental illness, I want to work to understand and explore Bourgeois’ reflection of trauma and repressed childhood memories in her work
Group series of works thematically and juxtapose different forms
Mood Board Pinterest Including LB Visual references: Link
Mapping & Content: Choose 2D or 3D mapping and create content related to your choice.
2D mapping, with some additional exploration of using the projector as a light source to illuminate existing objects/structures
Content: paintings/drawings/sculptures from Louise Bourgeois’ body of work, as well as small sculptural elements that reference her work (wire recreation of her Maman spider sculpture, placement of clay carving tools to cast shadow mimicking Personages sculpture, books stacked to recall Memling Dawn, small stone fire pit hanging wire to create space for projection of suspended sculptures, small toy chairs from my own childhood lit red to recall her work with C-project / Cells / Red Room, small stone fire pit to represent Nature Study – Velvet Eyes)
Equipment List and briefly explain the equipment you'll use, including your projector choice.
Vamvo 12400 (far from the most high quality projector, but this is the one I have at home at the moment)

Mini dollhouse chairs
Stone mini firepit
Mini canvas
Antique wooden box sewing set
Black hanging wire
Red/gold encyclopedia stack
Tools for clay sculpting and wooden sculptural toy base
Paper bag
Sunset lamp for underdesk illumination
Reflection
Representing the work of an artist like Louise Bourgeois, even in such a small way, is a massive task, given the extent of her body of work and the longevity of her artistic life. I think any number of pieces that I settled on, even if I had been able to project 100 works, would have felt minuscule and never close to fully representative of all that Bourgeois created. Between watching the documentary, The Spider the Mistress and the Tangerine and collecting and projecting imagery, I do feel like I've spent more time with her work and have more context for the pieces of hers I've seen in person at Mass MoCA, Storm King, and Dia Beacon over the years.
Practically/technically, I had some challenges with the fragility of the environment once the projector was set up, having to reset or adjust masks if objects shifted, etc. That made tinkering with the setup on the desk feel hard, and I found myself stuck at one point, not thrilled with the initial balance but not wanting to move things around and re-mask. I eventually did make changes to the physical environment, and am glad I did - even having to go through and re-arrange elements in MadMapper. There was a lot of testing, doing and undoing, to understand what kind of surfaces do and do not work well for representing images/light.
Representing or curating another artist's work in a way where they cannot consent and be involved in the process, especially with an artist who was often so protective of where and how her work was shown, certainly impacted the choices I made creatively, wanting to be sensitive to the original work and its varied contexts. Having watched the documentary mentioned above relatively recently, I found myself recalling Bourgeois' voice throughout the process.
Documenting projection work is also tricky, but it was nice to have the piece up for a while at home so that I could try different angles and lighting situations, etc. Projector quality is also something I'm thinking more about now, potentially wanting to invest in a higher quality projector for use in contexts like this and beyond.
Working through this project, I started to feel my own aesthetics emerging in projection, and in crafting balance in a scene, editing what to include and what not to include when there is so much to reference and still being able to get a sense of the thematics of a work.
Lastly, completing this project while having COVID was certainly its own challenge, given my fluctuating energy levels and body/brain temperatures, but it was a good exercise in breaking creative work down into discrete tasks and production planning.

Decorative Sunday
This week’s decorative plates come from the Encyclopedia of Architecture, a two-volume reference work from the second half of the 19th century. Special Collections holds two copies of the second volume of Encyclopedia of Architecture, both published by two firms listed at the same New York City address and involving the publisher Henry Johnson: Johnson, Fry & Co. and Martin & Johnson. The work is an American edition of Nicholson's Dictionary of the Science and Practice of Architecture, written by Peter Nicholson and originally published in parts, as Architectural Dictionary, from 1812-1819. Johnson and his firms were major players in the 19th century gift book market. One example of this is, and one Johnson’s pet projects was, the four-volume History of the United States, first published in 1866, illustrated by Alonzo Chappel and written by Jesse Ames Spencer.
I had hoped that some sleuthing could help me determine which of these publications came first, based on Johnson’s collaborators, but looking into the firms (and a third, Johnson, Wilson & Co.) did not present a clear chronology. While it appears as though the output of the Martin & Johnson partnership is limited to 1855 and 1856, the earliest works bearing the Johnson, Fry & Co. moniker also dates to 1855, with publishing activities continuing through 1869. Johnson, Wilson & Co. appears as early as 1857 and remains active through at least 1874. Given the degree of overlap, the order in which our two copies were released remains uncertain. What is clear is that Henry Johnson, and the 27 Beekman Street location in Manhattan, was the consistent thread. It is also clear that a number of the plates had be re-etched between publications: while all the plates in the book are recreations of Peter Nicholson’s (or his son, Michal Angelo’s) original illustrations, engraver’s marks are inconsistent between the two editions.

Hi there! I absolutly love you writing! I was wondering if you could pretty please write a very fluffy piece with Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds. Keep up the AMAZING work and may the force be with you!
FUN FACTS || Spencer Reid.
It had become a thing between the two of you. You thought that the way his mind worked was amazing, he just liked seeing you smile.
“Hey, Spence, tell me something interesting.” You requested, head in his lap as you watched the movie that was on TV. The genius didn’t stop reading his book, mentally skimming through some of the more obscure facts he remembered. Finally, he glanced down to you only to find you giddily smiling.
“Between 1912 and 1948, competitive art was an Olympic Game. They awarded medals in sculptures, music, painting, and architecture. If they still counted them, John Copley would be the oldest medalist in Olympic History at 73.” He recited, absentmindedly lowering his book as he continued while you played with one of his hands (another habit of yours that Spencer pretended to just not to mind, but actually loved), “According to the Smithsonian, he placed silver for his 1948 engraving Polo Players in the last Olympic games that had the competition.”
You sighed contentedly, thinking about the new knowledge as you pressed a kiss to his knuckles. He smiled down at you, taking his hand from you as he began toying with your hair, booked held to the side with one hand.
____________________
Other times, you did it to take his mind of something.
You watched as the doctor chewed on his lip, flipping through a Russian translation of War and Peace like his life depended on it. You knew he was worried about Hotch, who was still taking his time after Hayley’s death.
You came from behind, gently dragging a hand through his hair, nails lightly scratching his scalp to rouse his from his stupor, “Tell me something odd, Dr. Reid.”
The troubled agent sighed, but indulged you anyways, “Uhhhh, did you know that the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth was Two billion degrees Kelvin- about 3599999540.33 degrees Fahrenheit. For reference to interior of our sun is only 15 million.”
“Oh, only 15?” You asked playfully, gently scratching the back of his neck. He leaned forward, relaxing at the touch.
“Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories produced it using a superheated gas.” He went on explaining as you draped yourself over him in a hug, kissing his cheek. He chatted animatedly about the physics behind that but paused after a bit.
“Hey, (Y/N)?” He asked, bringing your attention back to him- while you enjoyed his fun facts, thermonuclear physics was a bit above your paygrade.
“Hmmm.” You hummed, tucking a light brown curl behind his ear.
“Thank you.”
_____________
And other times, you did it to take your own mind of things.
Anxiety, amongst other negative emotions, bubbled in your stomach. Spencer could tell something was wrong, but you didn’t seem to want to talk about it. You had been switching between fiddling with nails and anxiously scrolling through your twitter feed for the past half hour.
Spencer didn’t want to press you to talk about it if you didn’t want to but hated seeing you so worked up. He had turned on your favorite show and was playing with your hair, even throwing out the offer to try to cook something.
“Hey, Spence?” Your voice was quiet as your head fell to his shoulder, knees drawing up as you curled into him. Adjusting himself to make you more comfortable, he wrapped his other arm around you.
“Yes?” He answered quietly, cheek resting against your hair.
“Tell me something, anything.” You requested, closing your eyes and moving so your head was on his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
“The moons gravitational pull is slowly making Earth’s rotation slower. Every 100 years it adds 1.4 milliseconds to our day. With some basic calculations, you could deduce that when dinosaurs roamed the planet, days were twenty-THREE hours long.” He informed you, thumb rubbing comforting circles on your arm.
Though your voice was muffled by the tweed coat that he’d worn to work that day, he still heard your quiet, tired gratitude, “Thank you.”
_______________
Spencer had just taken your wine glass back to Rossi’s table to refill it after telling you another crazy fact about the moon. You smiled as he went, soft eyes following him as he left the room.
The rest of the BAU watched the two of you, happy for the youngest member of the team. Unaware that Spencer could still hear her, JJ nudged your knee with a kind smile, “Why do you always ask him to tell you facts?”
You stopped to think about it, it had become such second nature. Grinning at the blonde, you answered, “It’s like dating an encyclopedia. The way his brain works is amazing, and he knows so much that there’s no telling what he’s going to tell me. Did you know, he’s never told me the same fact twice?”
“It’s like they were made for each other.” Prentiss laughed, causing you to blush as the rest of the team agreed as Spencer walked back in holding a full glass of wine.
Derek teased him about being whipped and Penelope called dibs on maid of honor. Prentiss and JJ were clinking their glasses together while Rossi was complaining that the team was drinking him out of house and home. Distracting you from Hotch moving to the corner of the room, pulling out his phone.
“Hey, (Y/N), can I tell you something?” Spencer called your attention away from his teammates as he laced his hand in yours. With a smile, you nodded, waiting for him to tell you another insane tidbit of knowledge.
“Did you know that the Greeks are the reason we wear engagement rings on our left ring finger. They believed there was a vein called the vena amoris that ran straight to your heart. It doesn’t actually exist, but that’s where the tradition comes from.” He paused his rambling, and you had an inkling where this was going as his grip on your hand tightened- his hand was sweating and he was speaking fast, indicating that he was nervous, “In a similar vein, in 1477 Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy.”
Your eyebrow quirked upwards as butterflies filled your stomach, but he wasn’t done, “Also, technically, American marriages weren’t required by law to have witnesses until 1957.”
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N), Will you marry me?”
Your heart stopped as he slipped down onto one knee and produced a ring out of his pocket, hands flying to your mouth as the team around you gasped and clapped. You struggled for words wildly nodding as you choked out a frantic, “yes, yes, oh my god, yes!”
The rest of the team cheered as you launched yourself at the curly-haired doctor, who happily laughed as the two of you toppled over onto the rug. Helping you up, he slipped the ring onto your hand with a smile. Struggling to control your breath, you glanced from the ring to your boyfriend fiance.
(Ignoring Emily as she turned to Rossi with a brilliant smile, “Well, Rossi, time to break out the Champagne.”
“Hey, Spence, can I tell you something?” You asked, giggling as he looked confused. You caught his lips, enjoying the moment before breaking away, “I love you.”

Sorry this took so long, but I hope this fills the need for fluffy! :)

These are my characters for my Fanganronpa: International Despair Vessel that I'm working on
I attempted to draw them all in the Danganronpa style, however it was much too time consuming so here they all are in my style
I'll write a rundown of all the characters below but for now here are all their Ultimate Talents.
Top row
Olivia- Ultimate Potter
Misha- Ultimate Mind Reader
Edda- Ultimate Yodeler
Xavier- Ultimate Butcher
Sun Jung- Ultimate Pet Trainer
Ford- Ultimate Jet Stream Artist
Dario- Ultimate Interior Designer
Bottom Row
Luca - Ultimate Escape Artist

Alessandra- Ultimate Antique Restorer
Jubalin- Ultimate Director
Pierre- Ultimate Mime
Ichika- Ultimate Incense "Listener"
Beshadu- Ultimate Florist
And the guy with the pink hair is:
Harper- Ultimate Con Artist (And the protag)
Ok so now for personalities under the cut
Harper- Harpers personality depends on who he's around. Being the Ultimate Con Artist, he's very good at molding himself into what is needed for the situation he's in. He's has great reasoning skills, and can almost he compared to a detective. He's 17 and British.
Olivia- Olivia is quiet and likes to keep to herself and her work. She loves pottery and also admired architecture. She likes to do things hands on. She's 16 and Canadian.
Misha- Misha is 14 and the youngest there. She loves her brother, Mikhail with all her heart and believes he is her protector. She stares very intently at people and her 3rd eye tattoo she believes is the gateway to the soul. She's Russian.
Edda- Edda already has a profile on my page but she's a strong willed warrior type of woman. She never takes not for an answer. She's 17 and swedish.
Xavier- Xavier is socially awkward to the umpteenth degree. He's very skittish and quiet and will do things he doesn't like to avoid conflict. He's 17 and Australian.
Sun Jung- Sun Jung is a happy go lucky 16 year old. She loves animals and does everything with a fiery passion. She always strives to be the best. She's South Korean.
Ford- Ford is a 17 year old American boy who thinks being American is a personality trait. He is loud and sometimes annoying to some, but is always optimistic. He believes that with enough effort anything is possible.
Dario- Dario is a 17 year old Italian boy. He's a stick in the mud and likes for everything to be perfect. What makes him mad is his minor heterochromia. He is sometimes unintentionally rude because he doesn't really express himself
Luca- Luca is a really flamboyant guy. He likes to boast about his ultimate talent, and loves to tests people's limits. He's not so much of a joker as he is a nuisance. He's 16 and Italian.
Mikhail- Mikhail doesn't have much of a personality. He is stotic and quiet, and normally only interacts with his sister unless it's absolutely necessary to talk to someone else. He does enjoy when people call him talented though. He's 17 and Russian.
Alessandra- Alessandra is a peppy, 15 year old, Peruvian Antique Restorer. She loves do drone on about the history of the items she keeps, and she's like an encyclopedia. She doesn't like conflict at all.
Jubalin- Jubalin is kind of a freak. She's the ultimate director, and she shoots documentaries. She thinks that all the horrible things that are happening on the Despair Vessel need to be seen by the world, and its her job as a director to catch it. She spunky and loud. She's also 16 and South African.
Pierre- Pierre is a mime. Need I say more? He's French and 15.
Ichika- Ichika is stuck up and prudish. She believes she is better than everyone else, and that they're all unimportant plebs. She is completely rude and unfriendly. She is 16 and Japanese.
Beshadu- Beshadu is quiet but she loves people. She loves flowers and nature, and she also loves the ocean. She stands up for what she believes in but hates to get physical. She's 15 and Ethiopian.

In an Absent Dream
Author: Seanan McGuire
First published: 2019

Possibly the second-best of this (overall underwhelming) series. It always helps when there are no snarky teenagers who speak in a superbly unnatural way.
A Long Petal of the Sea
Author: Isabel Allende
First published: 2019
Pages: 336
Rating: ★★★★☆
How long did it take: 6 days
More than anything this story was a history lesson for me - and a welcomed one, because I have never researched Chile and the turmoil it went through in the 20th century. The author´s style is not my favourite, it felt a bit too dry and clipped on more than one occasion, but even if I didn't mesh with it I read the book very quickly.
Mr Rochester
Author: Sarah Shoemaker
First published: 2017
Pages: 464
Rating: ★★★★☆
How long did it take: 5 days
Thank you Sarah Shoemaker for taking a different road than the majority of Jane Eyre retellings, which invariably portray Mr Rochester as a devil incarnate. Because that seems to be the general modern consensus. But you have managed to create a portrait of a man, who retains his flaws (and yes, he becomes manipulative), but finally has a voice and can offer his own point of view. The book has a slow, languid pace and it very much reminds the reader of the 19th-century novels in style, which fits the narrative. There are no great surprises, since everything dramatic we already know, still I greatly enjoyed reading about Rochester as a somehow lost and starving for affection little boy, awkward teenaged trying to please, optimistic and charmed young man and eventually bitter adult who struggles for bits and pieces of happiness. I also believe that this version of Edward Rochester (as well as Bertha Mason) is much more loyal to what Charlotte Brontë had in mind when she was writing them, than what many other have managed, when they tried to twist the characters and their motivations in their own attempts to retell the masterpiece that is Jane Eyre.
My Best Friend's Exorcism
Author: Grady Hendrix
First published: 2016
Pages: 174
Rating: ★★★★☆
How long did it take: 2 days
This may not have been as half as scary or half as hilarious as I had expected it to be... but it turned out to be a perfect book for the given moment. It reads very easily and quickly and more than on possession it actually centres on the friendship between two teenage girls. I enjoyed it immensely.
The Only Good Indians
Author: Stephen Graham Jones

Rating: ★★★★☆

I am rather new to the horror genre, so I have little to compare this book to. That said, I think it was solid, even if unevenly paced. Scenes which truly leave you scared and interested are interchanged with ones that I suppose were mean to give you the less obvious creeps, but quite a lot of them bored me. And frankly, there was way too much basketball, even if it was important in the later parts of the story. Still, I appreciate the Native American culture representation as well as the thrill and immersion I got near the end. I believe it is not a spoiler to say that the finish left me satisfied and actually moved.
Jerusalem: The Biography
Author: Simon Sebag Montefiore
First published: 2011
Pages: 752
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
How long did it take: 13 days
I have read some truly excellent books on remarkable cities (like London, Prague and St. Petersburg) and while I admit writing a book on Jerusalem must have been a much more daunting task, it still does not excuse this book being rather lacklustre. Perhaps my own expectations were simply misplaced? I would have liked a story of Jerusalem more focused on the culture, the interesting personalities, the architecture, perhaps even literature and other art forms... focused on what makes Jerusalem special and unique. Instead, this book is an exhausting encyclopedia of every massacre and war and ruler. Which is fine when you are trying to look up something basic, but not nearly enough to make for good reading. I have also come across some inaccurate statements, which, even if seemingly minor, put in question other claims made in the book. Not to mention the author´s obsession with informing you on the sexual prowess (or lack of it) and perversion of nearly everybody he mentions. For example, I did not need to know that Gustave Flaubert once had sex with three girls and orgasmed four times when he visited Beirut. A catalogue of events and names, not a particularly impressive tribute to one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

House of Earth and Blood
Author: Sarah J. Maas
First published: 2020
Pages: 803
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
How long did it take: 9 days
I read this book because I thought I would give Sarah J. Maas a chance, her being so popular an author. So my homework is done now and...yeah... this is a super trash literature that is completely fine to enjoy when you want your brain to completely switch off and not think at all. But as for the world-building, editing, writing, characters, pacing.... nah. Not good. I could write a 24-page-long essay on what all there is to criticize, but then I realized this book did not really give me anything so why should I bother reviewing.... Givin it 2 stars here because I did not feel the need to throw it across the room and burn it, it did not make me mad (like some other books did in the past), and that vacuum cleaner scene WAS funny.
Imperial Mother, Royal Daughter: Correspondence Between Marie Antoinette and Maria Theresa
Author: Olivier Bernier
First published: 1986

Rating: ★★★★☆

A very interesting and revealing collection of letters between two iconic women. Would make an excellent "Side reading" to any biography on the two. The way the letters are chosen and edited I also appreciate, since the whole thing really reads like a novel, even though it is not.

John Marshall Courts Building
800 East Marshall Street
Built, 1978
Renovated, 1994
Architects, C. F. Murphy & Associates; Helmut Jahn, project architect (1978). Hening-Vest-Covey (1994)

May 2020
Straight out of Alphaville.

[ADR] — building in 1981 downtown survey
Designed by a nationally known Chicago-based architectural firm, the John Marshall Courts Building was intended to provide a neutral background to the John Marshall House. In this it succeeds. it is a slickly detailed glass box with rounded edges. The building is the best example of the "glass box" genre in Richmond.

(Montage) — Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, image undated
C. F. Murphy & Associates are among the more skillful followers of Mies van der Rohe, who was the most influential architect of the 20th century. Their Richmond building has been controversial on both functional and aesthetic grounds. [ADR]

(SAH Archipedia)
Designed to respect the Marshall House next door, the sleek, black glass box of the John Marshall Courts Building sets off the house, emphasizing its iconic, welcoming facade. This is perhaps its only success, because the court building has been plagued with criticism for its dysfunction. Recent alterations have attempted to correct traffic and security issues. (SAH Archipedia)

May 2020
When your lead architect likes to wear capes as normal outerwear, and his detractors call him “Flash Gordon”, there’s a chance you might not get what you were expecting. Before you know it, you might be throwing around emotional terms like controversial and dysfunction and find yourself spending money to correct gaps in the original design.

(The Architect’s Newspaper) — McCormick Place, 1969-1971
After graduating from the Technische Hochschule in Munich in 1965, (Helmut) Jahn moved to Chicago to study at the Illinois Institute of Technology, a school long associated with the Modernist aesthetic of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his followers. On the basis of this solid design background, Jahn was hired by Chicago architectural firm C.F. Murphy Associates to work on the Miesian design for McCormick Place in Chicago.

(YouTube) — screencap from Helmut Jahn, FAIA Lifetime Achievement Award
In the late 1970s and ’80s Jahn made his mark, designing extravagant buildings that combined historical and contextual references—the central tenets of postmodern architecture—with high-tech engineering solutions. (Encyclopedia Britannica)

May 2020
Jahn certainly has his admirers and adherents. He has completed over 90 building projects during his long career, and has been widely recognized for his efforts, earning a Ten Most Influential Living American Architects award from the American Institute of Architects in 1991.

(Newspapers.com) — Helmut Jahn’s MetroWest building in Naperville, Illinois —Chicago Tribune Sunday, March 2, 1986
However, in the early days, his critics considered him “that postmodern enfant terrible who rocketed to stardom on the supercharged fireworks of the State of Illinois Building in 1985.” (Architecture Week)
A 1986 Chicago Tribune article about his MetroWest design in Naperville, Illinois called him a “flamboyant postmodernist, who adorns himself in capes and Porches.” It went on to observe that the building produced nausea in a nearby office worker, and concluded with relief that “at least nobody has dubbed it the Starship Naperville.” [CHIT]

May 2020
With context like that, perhaps it’s not surprising that issues were found with the courts building. Not everyone digs the glass box thing, that’s easy to grok, but the functional issues are something else. The building opened in 1978 and just four short years Robert Winthrop was calling it controversial, so whatever problems existed must have quickly found a voice.

May 2020
The precise nature of the complaints is obscure, but the building does not appear to respect the available space. Together with the John Marshall House, the courts building complex consumes the entire block, yet there is a large, empty plaza along Ninth Street.

May 2020
It certainly looks nice, but by 1994 the City would find itself coughing up $2 million dollars for a renovation to create additional office space and another courtroom. [RTD1] At such cost, there probably weren’t a lot of plaza enthusiasts still hanging around.

(Rocket Werks RVA Postcards) — John Marshall High School
Adding to the sense of injury, the new courts building came at the price of the beautiful old John Marshall High School. It too sat quietly behind the John Marshall House at the corner of 9th and Marshall and was considered a state-of-the-art facility when it opened in 1909, with large classrooms, elevators, and science labs, as well as modern plumbing, heating, and ventilation. [RTD2]
Alas, this sacrificial lamb was razed, and the school had to scoot to a new location in North Side.
(John Marshall Courts Building Building is part of the Atlas RVA! Project)
Note
A shout-out to Ray Bonis & Harry Kollatz for their tips and input on the courts building!

Xmas Message For 2019
And here we go, my 19th annual year-end love letter online …Georgi Balinov and I rang in the new year at a giant party in Bangkok, halfway around the world. That foreign location, its beauty and tastes, set the tone for my 2019, a year of seeing the world, while stabilizing my life. Though often in flux or movement, 2019 was a year many things normalized over the year.
In January, almost immediately after arriving stateside, I crossed the pond and saw Michelle Visage perform in the West End with Peter Wish. Afterward, I played with her wigs backstage and walked her towards the queer kids lining up for selfies and autographs. I am very lucky to have Peter and Michelle in my life, kindred spirits both. One reminding me that fame, fortune, ebb, and flow, but that being real is what matters most. The other, a reminder to stay forever young. I visited Berlin yet again and did the usual, working, and playing, hard.
February appeared and I traveled to Philadelphia with Sandra Hansel, Georgi, George Sapio, and Anthony DeFilippis. We toured Lisa Roberts’ house, saw a Dieter Rams exhibit, dined with George Alley. In Lambertville, that Sunday, I bought vinyl and vintage hats. Later that month, I got a swallow tattooed on my hand, a symbol of flight and travel, and Warhol’s knives, blackened into my shin. An Eames exhibit in Oakland was a sweet way to end the month.
In March with my crew, Georgi, Khadyon Reid, Luis Urribarri, Anthony, and George, descended upon Salvador for Carnival. It was insane! I watched Anitta live, and danced in a sea of pushing, fighting, kissing Brazilians for days upon days. I felt unsafe and alive, threatened and excited. It was intense. Back home I got my other hand tattooed, again honoring my love of seeing the world. I traveled to Portland, came back to NYC at the end of the month, finally moving into our apartment, the one we bought 1.5 years before, that I designed, and had renovated head to toe. Finally, we had our dream home. The weekend we moved in, the place was still not ready, but we were sick of living without our things and in other people’s beds. Peg Kendall and Georgi’s mom came, and we worked our asses off unpacking and starting to make the 2800 square foot loft on west 13th street a home. We’d lived in Airbnbs and friends’ places for 19 months and it was tiring not having a home, not having most of our things. My art! My toys! My shoes!. Those months taught me how important a home, a safe place, and the oasis of my collections is to my mental health. From March on I felt more on solid ground and dedicated more energy to my career and friendships as a result.
In April we went to Coachella, seeing Ian and Jose Seronni, JJ and Andrey Lunin, and dancing in the desert of California. Multiple trips to San Francisco, catching glimpse of old friends, scaling my team at work, as I took on more and more responsibility.
In May, George Sapio and I celebrated (me a little early) a shared, fun birthday weekend at Soho Farmhouse. Joined by Matthew Kelleher, Mark Silver, Jaime Tanner, Matt Lynch, and others, we went shooting and feasted on pheasant in the English countryside.June was really busy, insanely so.
For my 43rd in early June, I had a 30-person dinner party in our new place! We ended up at Club Cumming after, but before friends, new, and old, showered me with a vinyl record, the admission fee I’d set for my party. Lauren Foster, who has shared her home with us, was, appropriately, our first overnight guest. London, again, Berlin, too. Then home for Pride. Willam Ralphie hosted Bingo at eBay, Zach Augustine, David Mason Chlopecki, other loves attended. That weekend danced to both Madonna and Grace Jones on the pier and danced with 15K others at Javitz, where my favorite singer, Cyndi Lauper, belted “I Drove All Night,” her best song, at midnight. I stayed until the sun came up. NYC was electric that weekend. Parties, icons, friends from the world over … the city has an energy you could literally see and taste. I caught a few moments of the parade, overtaking lower Manhattan, and I smiled really big. God, it can feel good being gay! God, the world has improved for gay people (and yes, I know, we still have ways to go, especially for more marginalized LGBTQ groups). But I still took a moment to acknowledge the things that are better, that I have seen in my very gay lifetime. NYC that weekend was the ultimate place to reflect.
July 4th I went to Hamptons, with Ricardo, Brian, Felipe L. Mollica, others, guests of Anthony. Hosted Fab.com reunion, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, and took my team to Korea (where I shared a traditional Korean meal with Jae Hah), China (where I ate bird’s nests, jellyfish, sea snails, saw a Yves Klein show with Adnan Abbasi, and danced to 90s pop in a packed gay club), and Moscow (where I was amazed at how clean the city was and where I went to a traditional sauna and was whipped, naked, with tree leaves in front of dozens of Russian dudes in the nude). While in Russia a protest erupted, literally below the rooftop bar I dined in. Russia seemed freer than I’d expected, way more Western, up until this moment. I ended the weekend at a club at 3 AM, Russian women in high, high heels, dancing on the bar, vodka flowing like water. 2020 saw me traveling to places I romanticized as a child. Russia, one such place. I thoroughly enjoyed the friendships formed in Moscow, the food, and history. I want to return.
August, I was back in San Jose and Portland for work, then off again to Europe for vacation. We started our trip in Croatia, where Georgi and I kayaked around Dbruvnik’s harbor. Croatia’s cliffs and turquoise water did not disappoint, as we boated to islands and swam in caves. Driving south into Montenegro, the architecture reminded me more of Polish, Bulgarian trips, the water, greener. At the Amman we laid out next to The Beckhams, watching David kick a soccer ball with workers of the hotel, and watching Victoria read a book. Georgi and I then ventured to Mykonos, sunning til sunset and dancing til sunrise. A weekend trip upstate with our besties (including a guest appearance by Eric Lee, riding rides at the Colombia County fair, cooking pies, and grilling meats, ended our summer.
In September I went to Berlin and did Folsom and a speaking gig in front of 1K eBay sellers. I went again to Tel Aviv, meeting gay Israeli technology workers and a bevy fo Israeli start-ups. In Jerusalem, I returned to the wonderful Machneyuda with Gilad Ayalon, where they remembered me from my birthday the year before.
October saw us hosting my mother and my niece for a visit. We fell in love with Company XVI, a dance/burlesque/performance art troupe in Brooklyn. I took my mother to see Madonna, a night I will cherish forever. And we saw Dear Evan Hanson. A weekend in Miami with Lauren Foster and K was needed warmth. I took Georgi to see both acts of The Inheritance (so good!). Then off to Berlin, again, and Paris, where I looked at art and went shopping for fall clothes. Halloween, in NYC, was brilliant and over the top; I went as white Pierrot clown. In Brooklyn, to Honey Dijon, we danced all night. Ralph Rucci, the American couturier reposted our photo on Instagram, calling it high-fashion, however, it was Georgi who won the night as Spock.
November I was in NYC early on, shopping with Thomas Cawson (who hooked me up with pink denim Helmut Lang), eating Christmas cookies, and being interviewed by Buzzfeed, a segment on 90s toys. I imitated a Furby. Then a week in Portland (I glow-in-the-dark-miniature-golfed), and off to Helsinki, catching up with former friends from Fab, One Nordic, Hem. Then to Lapland, with Georgi, George, and Anthony, lapping up wine, winter wonderlands, and dining on reindeer and elk. Dog sledding, snowmobiling, Northen lights! Another childhood desire checked from the list. Dinner with Michelle Case in London closed the month.
In December I went back to Berlin (my second home) and hosted a fundraiser for Single Step in our home. In one night Georgi and I helped raise $50K to help build Bulgaria’s first LGBTI center. It was also an impromptu holiday party: so many old friends together again in one room. And now Georgi and I sit in an airport lounge, awaiting our flight to Baltra, in the Galapagos. Once we land, we’ll board a 7-day cruise on a mega-yacht/small cruise ship. This, I feel, I have been waiting my entire life for.
I often write about how I was lonely as a kid. I was gay, I had a drug-addicted father, I grew up very poor. I oftentimes say music saved my life. But, I don’t write enough about the joy animals gave me too. I had so many pets: newts, turtles, tortoises, tree frogs, geckos, crabs, salamanders, etc. Caring for them, feeding them, gave me peace and allowed me to love. One turtle I had had a cracked shell. He lived in my room for many, many years. I always preferred him, with his defects, to the others. I think I feel the same about people.
As a child, I became obsessed with the Galapagos Islands, and mostly the tortoises. I would read about them in encyclopedias and race to see them at zoos. I always felt connected to turtles. They were my spirit animal. Later in life, I’d bloom, my feathers growing, my pride, alive. I’d no longer consider myself a turtle, my spirit animal changed. I told this story to my colleague Eben Sermon, who runs eBay’s German business: I always wanted to be a turtle. But I ended up a cockatoo. Eben brought this up last week in Berlin and it made me think a bit more about affinities for animals and how I have not had that connection as often as I probably should.
So this week, before we ring in New Years in Rio, I will honor the old me, the kid, the quieter Bradford, the sadder Bradford, by visiting those turtles, finally.
And I’ll marvel at the wonder of nature and evolution, both the evolution of animals and this world, and also the very real and dramatic evolution of my spirit and happiness.
Happy Holidays, Peace & Big Love

The word "Ottoman" is a historical Anglicisation of the name of Osman I, the founder of the Empire and of the ruling House of Osman (also known as the Ottoman dynasty). Osman's name in turn was derived from origin. In Ottoman Turkish, the empire was referred to as Devlet-i ʿAliyye-yi ʿOsmâniyye or alternatively Osmanlı Devleti. In Modern Turkish, it is known as Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ("Ottoman Empire") or Osmanlı Devleti ("The Ottoman State"). In some Western accounts, the two names "Ottoman" and "Turkey" were often used interchangeably. Trip IV: Adventuring to Bridgeport
An overview map of Bridgeport | Source
Hi everyone and welcome back to the finale of my Chicago neighborhood adventures!
For this week’s blog, I’ll be sharing experiences from my trip to Bridgeport, a residential neighborhood in Chicago. While this entry documents the ending of my Global Chicago class, I hope to still share the excitement this trip brought me in exploring the area’s diverse groups of people, arts, and community identity.
Full disclosure, despite the neighborhood being so close in proximity, this trip was the first time I had been to Bridgeport. Recently I’ve been considering finding an apartment to live off-campus in this area, so you can imagine my excitement to not only uncover the environment and learn the history of the neighborhood itself.

Historically, Bridgeport was established in the 1830s by Irish laborers who had originally migrated to help build the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Irish Canal workers settled in what is now known as Bridgeport, and the area later became home to rail workers, slaughterhouse laborers, and many other hard laborers during the beginning of Chicago’s mass industrialization period (WTTW). Following the completion of the canal in 1848, Bridgeport thrived as an industrial center and birthed the popular commercial strip known as Archer Road. This commercial strip thrived in the neighborhood with the later creation of many Catholic parishes, shops, and schools (Encyclopedia of Chicago).

In addition to the Irish, Bridgeport soon became home to many Germans, Czechs, Croatians, Poles, Lithuanians, Italians, Hispanic, and Chinese settlers (and many more!) (Lockzero UIC). This migrational pattern can best be observed through Bridgeport’s abundance in diverse churches still present in the neighborhood today. When walking around, there are many European and Asian ethnic group parishes heavily present in the neighborhood, example churches being the Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple (Chinese), St. Mary’s of Perpetual Help Parish & St. Barbara (Polish, as can be seen through the cathedral style architecture), and St. Jerome’s Catholic Church (Croatian).

This Polish parish, in particular, caught my eye the most, as I greatly enjoyed seeing the difference in architectural styles based on the ethnic demographics. In regards to the current day community, I believe these churches are a reflection of the neighborhood’s residents and the extensive diverse cultural history of the community itself. In regards to how Bridgeport’s demographics are today, according to Statistical Atlas, 41.4% of the population identified as Asian, 31.9% as White, 21.7% as Hispanic, 3.2% as Black, 1.2% as Mixed, and 0.5% as other.
Race and ethnicity demographics of Bridgeport | Source
Although this was my first time in the area, many of my peers and classmates had informed me of Bridgeport's diversity in residents, and I felt that sharing this demographic would help provide context and understanding for my trip (for my peers were definitely right). Additionally, what was specifically interesting was the small 3.2% Black or African American population in Bridgeport versus the abundance of Black or African Americans in the neighboring area of Bronzeville; were there reasons for this community to gravitate more toward the latter? This was something I wanted to keep in mind for my trip.
Beginning the trip itself, I thought it would be helpful to include the sites I had planned to initially visit when organizing my trip (not limited, just some ideas in mind). The general theme I chose to pursue on this trip was centered around the neighborhood’s art and how it contributes to community identity, especially considering the variety of cultural identities in the area.
Map of my personal itinerary | Original photo
I began my trip by taking the 35 bus heading westbound, riding from 35th St & Federal to 35th St & Halsted. Upon arrival, I decided to walk down Halsted street to get a feel of the neighborhood and most important make observations on the businesses and any signs of cultural diversity (and there was so much of it!)
Diverse businesses in Bridgeport | Original photos
One observation I was quickly able to make was that a lot of the businesses in Bridgeport are very diverse and reflective of the community’s ethnic demographics. A lot of the buildings I encountered were restaurants, a lot of them being of Asian or Latinx descent. Structurally, the buildings are very close together, and some are even right next to housing units with little to no space to spare. This commercial street was almost overwhelming initially to me because of this, as every amount of space seems to be occupied with a business, house, or apartment building. It was also interesting for me to see that the quality/upkeep of a lot of these buildings varied greatly; one side of the street could show restaurants in pristine condition while the other side of the street showed evicted buildings, there was a lot of inconsistency here. Overall, this just made me question the area’s levels of gentrification even more, and if this puts the area at a greater risk of being gentrified or not; some of these buildings seem to be struggling to survive, while others seem to be doing just fine. I was able to observe many people walking around and coming in and out of the establishments, and could tell that community residents valued the businesses. I kept my initial observations and ultimately continued on to explore the rest of the neighborhood.

Upon recommendation from my professor, my next spot was Jackalope Coffee & Tea House, located at 755 W 32nd St right off Halsted St. The shop itself was filled with color: the walls had Chicago memorabilia, stickers, flyers, posters, you name it. It was also filled with many young adults chatting, studying, or simply just enjoying the cafe.

While both in and outside of the establishment, one can notice the abundance of local flyers and events happening in Chicago, many centered around themes of education, art, and millennial culture (concerts, UberEats, cocktail clubs). To me, this appeared reflective of the community residents and caused me to initially question if the neighborhood was leaning more toward a “hipster” one, with the plethora of “hip” style events. With this question in mind, I continued my trip on shortly after ordering a small hot latte (yum)! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the cafe, and plan to return sometime with friends or homework.

Next on my list, I planned to visit as many art centers or buildings that I could find, and this venture began with the Chicago Youth Center, located at 844 W 32nd St, a short walk from Jackalope.

The Chicago Youth center was formed in 1956 with a vision of implementing “community inclusion, strong and effective leadership, thoroughly tested programs and continuous innovation” particularly in high-need communities and in partnership with early childhood providers and community schools in neighborhoods (Chicago Youth Centers). This specific Chicago Youth Center is known as the Fellowship house, and the mural is in dedication to the neighborhood's ethnic diversity and those who had migrated to Bridgeport during the building of the canal. The mural itself illustrated images of children and youth, with the repetition of the words “fellow” and “other”. The “other” is referring to someone whose life is unfamiliar to yours, in this case, those who are culturally different, while the “fellow” is referring to someone whose life is familiar to yours, someone who you consider one of your own; both of these words includes stereotypes and associated adjectives painted on the mural as well.

This mural was my favorite to see so far on my trip. At first, the concept of “fellow” versus “other” was foreign to me, but the artist does a good job ob explaining the differences between both as your eyes progressively view the mural. The concept is particularly special being in such a diverse neighborhood, as it pays homage to the many “Italian, Croatian, Chinese and Lithuanian immigrants and then Mexican immigrants” that called Bridgeport home by the 1950s (Chicago Youth Centers). Ultimately, as my trip progressed, I was quickly able to deduce that art was a prominent part of the area’s culture and members of the community. This was especially interesting to me considering the variety of ethnic groups that live in the area; art seems to be the uniting factor in bringing cultures and values together in Bridgeport.
This piece of art resonated the most with me after watching Vice’s Streets by VICE: Chicago (Halsted Street), when considering the shift in how ethnic groups previously interacted with each other versus how Bridgeport is demographically structured today. In the video, local Bridgeport business owner Ed Marszewski shares that Bridgeport previously used to be “one of those neighborhoods where if you were a person of color, you would never come here after dark, or you would be chased out”, further illustrating how the bordering expressways of Bridgeport, (Stevenson and Kennedy), were created to “keep the other out” (VICE). Looking at the current racial and ethnic demographics of the neighborhood, it’s fascinating for me to believe that the area has drastically changed from where it’s used to be, especially considering the largest demographic is an ethnic group comprised of POC. This convinces me all the more of how unique Bridgeport truly is as a neighborhood, as I can’t imagine a mural like this, fitting so well in another place in Chicago. The demographic transition makes me hopeful and curious about what the future of the neighborhood holds, and interested to see in how the racial biases change overtime.

The next stop on my trip was The Research House for Asian Art, however, upon arrival to the location, the building appeared to be closed/unused for the time being. While this was a minor setback, just down the same street I actually stumbled upon the Co-Prosperity Sphere, a cultural center located 3219 S Morgan Street.

While the cultural center itself was not open to the public during the day of my visit, the art displayed in the windows deeply captivated me as many of the pieces related to today’s political climate in regards to people of color, teachers, the Black Lives Matter movement and children in detainment centers.
A piece titled “Dignidad Rebelde” translating to rebel dignity. The artwork shows many images referring to themes of white supremacy, catholicism, border control, families being split, immigration, and empowering the Latinx community. I found these very profound considering today’s political climate & the negative sentiments/stereotypes about the Latinx community. | Original photo
Regarding one of the exhibits offers this quote from contributing Xicano artists Melanie Cervantes & Jesus Berraza, who believe in “empowering reflection of community struggles, dreams, and visions. These works were created to amplify people’s stories and to create art that can be put back into the hands of the communities who inspire it”.

The next stop on my trip was the Zhou B Art Center located at 1029 W 35th. This was my first time hearing about the Zhou art centers, and I was slightly confused upon arrival, as I couldn’t tell if they were open or closed for the day (because I was on this trip alone, I chose not to enter for safety reasons.)

The Zhou Brothers, ShanZuo and DaHuang are globally well renowned contemporary artists, with their extensive 40-year art history of paintings, performances, and sculptures (ZhouBrothers). The Zhou Brothers began their work in the United States after moving here in 1986 and opened the Zhou B Art Center in Bridgeport, Chicago in 2004 with a “dream of providing a platform and creative freedom for international artists” (ZhouBrothers). These values alone made me consider the high population of Asian residents and how this helps them feel represented in the community of Bridgeport, particularly through the art center’s goal of preserving cultural values and providing creative outlets for international individuals.

Overall, when leaving the center, I was left to consider how art can serve as a medium for bringing different cultures together, and for others, it can help connect you to your roots. When considering how this impacts Bridgeport overall, I believe that art centers like this provide opportunity for outside visitors to come and see the neighborhood for all it has to offer. Alternatively, I do acknowledge that an art center like this can potentially make the neighborhood vulnerable to gentrification or developers looking to capitalize off of the area’s cultural richness, as these events would further fuel a potential “hipster movement” in Bridgeport. As for now, Bridgeport’s colorful art scene seems unique and personal to the community, growing and serving as space for community members to showcase their talents, historical roots, and cultures.
To end my trip, I stopped at Stix n’ Brix Wood Fired Pizza for lunch and actually ran into a fellow schoolmate eating at the local establishment (this is my friend Ryan!) While I’m not sure if this restaurant directly lies in Bridgeport, it was right on my walk back to IIT’s campus, located at 220 W 33rd St. The establishment is located right by a neighboring red line train stop and conveniently shares the building with a coffee shop known as the Red Line cafe, where a lot of local students and residents go for studying and mingling. Additionally, this area is home to the notable Guaranteed Rate Field, home to the Chicago White Sox and serving as a popular attraction for tourists all over. The overall ambiance of this area in combination with the quality of the meal made it a location I plan on revisiting in the future.

As I ended my trip, the neighborhood itself left me to question what the future holds for the area and if it’s at risk for gentrification. What compels me to believe the area may someday turn into the next “hipster” neighborhood is that a very prominent part of the area’s culture is centered around the arts, much similar to what I was able to observe when venturing to Pilsen.

A lot of parallels can be drawn to the area when comparing them: rich in diversity, culture, and art through mediums of murals, commercial businesses, and tourist attractions. While these elements, particularly the arts, can serve as strong opportunities for communities, they run a financial risk of attracting investors and businesses capitalizing off of the neighborhood’s cultural and artistic richness. This is best understood through Aimee Levitt’s illustration of the hipster in her work, The Migration of the Hipster, asserting that hipsters are “colonizing and commercializing everything that made the neighborhood so great, transforming it from bohemia to brohemia”. I’m deeply conflicted about this question, purely because Bridgeport’s history shows me that the neighborhood is built on the efforts of the working class, and I can imagine that residents of the neighborhood care for their community’s roots and maintaining its value. While it someday maybe the next new “hipster” neighborhood, I feel that the neighborhood’s current-day wide range in diversity helps with cultural preservation and combats gentrification. I’m hopeful (yet cautious) that Bridgeport will continue to blossom into the complex and diverse neighborhood that it is.

Ultimately, I thoroughly enjoyed my final neighborhood trip and was glad that I was able to spend it in Bridgeport, and know it will not be my last. For my next trip, I’d love to focus more on the religious themes of the neighborhood, but this will have to wait for a warmer climate. Learning about this historical and cultural gem only further excites for what the city of Chicago has to offer, and I highly recommend you visit the area yourself.
Global Chicago, thank you.
