I’m aiming for 4” ish square, and I’m making A Bunch so I can give them to my endocrinologist’s entire staff because they have hugely improved my quality of life. Like. By leaps and bounds. lwe were talking about hormones in biology class and how estrogen and testosterone act as transcription factors and how T can become E and so on, aromatization etc, I love this kind of thing except I’m almost certain I know more about hormones and genetics as related to intersex variations than my bio teacher, and I was just thinking I’m like testosterone aromatization georg. The average person aromatizes only a small amount of T to E. Complete androgen insensitivity syndrome georg, who has T levels similar to a cis perisex man but can’t use it whatsoever so it all aromatizes into estrogen is an outlier adn should not be counted

Instinctively Mickey opened his mouth to answer, clamping it shut once he realised you weren’t speaking to him, but a fellow doctor across the lab. He hoped you hadn’t noticed. He felt a bit silly.
“I’m just going to put this in, ok? It’s a small chip to help us track your endocrine system, hormones, endorphins – those kinds of things. You shouldn’t feel a thing, it’s virtually weightless.” You spoke again, eyes occasionally making contact as you glanced down to reassure him, but more focused on dabbing at his skin with a wipe.
Mickey took a short breath, having not particularly grown accustomed to needles throughout any of his seventeen iterations.
“Uh-huh... Why do I -”
“All done.” You grinned, withdrawing the tool with a smile.
He couldn’t help but feel somewhat disappointed, selfishly wishing a flare up of some kind, anything that could get him to spend just a few more minutes longer with you. Anything was better than a meaningless afternoon within the four walls of his room. Pursing his lips, he pushed himself to sit upright, allowing for him to get a better view of you.
“How do you feel?”
“Fine...” he began, wringing his hands. “Though in my position I’ve learned that’s not much.”
“I can’t imagine what it’s like to be an Expendable. I admire your bravery,” you began, leaning in, your faces a few centimetres apart. “Chin up.”

“Bad hairstyles for one,” you said with a soft sigh, stepping away from the man to enter something into a computer. "My entire college years, amongst other things.”
“I bet they weren’t that bad,” he shrugged, brushing a wet, messy strand of his mousy brown hair from his eyes. “Nice girls like you definitely had a better time than me.”
The statement seemed to illicit a smile.
“Well,” you huffed as you scribbled something down on a clipboard. “Nice girls tend to finish last. That’s why I’m here. Other than the pay, being a doctor on Earth is pretty shit.”
Mickey grinned, and this time let out a genuine, audible laugh, so unrestrained that his voice broke in the process. You hummed in amusement, presumably at the fact that the man had taken such glee in an offhand comment, before going back to your job and listing some rather important things about the tests being run.
By that point Mickey had naturally zoned out, having heard all the doctors’ spiel before. What did it matter if hypertension could cause blackouts, heart attacks or death – he would just be reprinted anyway. In a fucked-up way, nothing really mattered... In what he thought would’ve been basic empathy, he hoped you could see him for who he was - less of a crash dummy and more of a human.

And by that nature, the whole lab was pissed off with you.
The past few experiments had been complete failures – not due to misguided hypothesises, but because Mickey was a shitty lab rat. If you could even call him that.
Over the few weeks that 17 had been cloned, nothing had gone to plan. Half the time, he’d passed out before research could begin, or hadn’t even been deemed fit to work. You’d only seen him in passing, being wheeled about on a table or through plexiglass – but you knew something was wrong…the numbers told you so.
It was difficult. On Earth there were too many patients for you to really care about them in the way your cared for Mickey, but reading his past files and listening here-say from the other workers was enough to sympathise with him. From what Dorothy had told you, his past iterations had never been so stubborn, which was why it didn’t make sense for him to act up now.
Arkady thought it to be a fault in the tech, that somehow he’d reprinted wrong…but you knew better.
It was obvious he’d grown fond of you. You’d caught him staring multiple times, a distant smile dotted across his face as he carved out your visage through the haze of the testing room. Sometimes, he’d even wave. Discreetly, you did back.
To be fair, you liked him too.
Naturally, it made sense for you to ‘deal’ with him. You clutched your clipboard to your chest as you walked down the empty corridors to a distant room, curtly waving away the guards as you entered.
The brown haired man perked up, and if you weren’t facing expulsion – or death – from Marshall himself then you would’ve made a quip about it.
“Oh - I, uh...They just shoved me in here, I have no idea what’s this all about —“ Mickey stammered, eyes glancing around the room frantically as if to search for a source of reason himself. You watched as he shrunk in on himself, seemingly realising from your crossed arms and pursed lips that you weren’t in a generous mood.
“You shouldn’t be surprised. You haven’t been eating as much. Or sleeping,” you began, shoes tapping against the floor as you strolled towards him. He seemed to be trying (and failing) to divert his gaze from you, eyes as wide and watery as ever, and it occurred to you that it felt like a mean teacher punishing a schoolboy. “They wanted to throw you in the cell, but I convinced them to lend you to me under the name of science.”
He nodded shyly and peered up at you from his bangs.
“Our research is compromised if you go into a mission on two hours of sleep and low blood sugar. Then we look bad, and Marshall blows his gasket.”
Mickey itched uncomfortably, contemplating something before the edges of his lips curved up into a small, jaunty smile. “...Isn’t there some kind of shot for that?”
“That isn’t the point, Mickey,” you chided, ignoring his silly attempt at a joke. “Not everything can be fixed by a drug. We may be miles away from Earth, but most things are still down to basic biology. You’re still human.”
The man sighed and cast his gaze to the floor, so much so that you couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get you into trouble with Marshall. If you let me out of here, I’ll tell him it’s my fault.”
You fought to hold back a small smile. Here he was, essentially a complete stranger – a literal lab experiment - and yet was ready to take a bullet for you. It baffled you as to why nobody else saw the gentleness of humanity in Mickey – probably because no one was willing to give him a chance. Being labelled ‘Expendable’ would do that, all too ironic that he was the most important on the ship. To the whole regime, really.
“There’s no need to do that...” you hummed. “I’m just annoyed I’ve overlooked things.”
“…Like?”
“Happiness, for one,” you began, slowly striding around the room to place your clipboard on a small table. “And attention. We tend to forget that we need it.”
Mickey swayed his head, seemingly taking in what you were saying as he watched you like a hawk. As if his body had been pulled taught with a string, his back visibly straightened as you stopped in-front of him, your shins touching the tips of his thigh. Swallowing, he angled his head to look up at you, and your gazes met.
“Be honest with me, Mickey…Did you stop eating just so you could see me?”

Your eyes fluttered shut, back arching into his touch as his words sent you over the edge. "Oh, shut up," you laughed, feeling your cheeks heat up at his innuendo. His hand slid up your arm, tracing soft shapes on your bare skin. You looked up at him, seeing the way his pupils dilated and feeling the evidence of arousal digging into you from behind. "Five more minutes and then I'm all yours, deal?" You raised a brow. You figured you had studied enough over the last couple days, and your oh so patient boyfriend deserved some of your attention.
A sly grin settled on his lips. "Deal, but don't think that I'll be keeping my hands to myself during these five minutes," he said, his eyes twinkling mischievously.
You turned back to your computer, giggling as he dipped his head back into your neck, already kissing and sucking at your delicate skin. His hands started to roam your body, and as you tried to focus, you found yourself wondering if you would make it five minutes before you surrendered to him.

I know someone with similar endocrine issues and she had celiac disease, so idk if you’ve been tested for that specifically but trying out gluten free can’t hurt
I’ve done food elimination and they did some blood tests. Back when I was desperately hunting for a reason why I was Supremely Fucked Up I got put on a very restricted diet to try to figure out if that was part of it. I had no eggs, dairy, or gluten for a pretty long time.
It didn’t fix me and it was a ton of work. Eventually gave up because I wasn’t improving. I strongly suspect all three might be slightly inflammatory to my system but making huge diet changes is a very specific kind of drain and I’ve been putting off trying to cut gluten again because frankly I hated the shit out of it and the cost/benefit is not quite tipping over into needing to bother.

Thank you everyone!!! What I am getting from everyone is that blood sugar varies a lot over the course of the day, and while probably not serious if it's not hypoglycemic it's still weird that I'm consistently testing in the fasting range when not fasting, and that I should talk to my endocrinologist about it. Luckily, I have an endocrinologist appointment coming up anyway, which is good because one of the medications I am on is supposed to cause high blood sugar. Like, that's not why I'm on that medication (I'm on it because salt) but it's known to cause both high blood sugar and high blood pressure (by making you retain salt) and I have neither???
Hey y'all! Another weird question for you: How long do you have to fast for a blood sugar reading to count as a fasting blood sugar measurement? Also, does drinking soda (like, full sugar soda) slowly over the time before the blood test count as not-fasting? Asking because I keep testing* in the fasting blood sugar range when I am pretty sure I am not supposed to. Like, two hours after eating a meal when I've been slowly drinking soda the whole intervening time, or half an hour after drinking a whole full-sugar gatorade *with the home blood sugar test thing, not like doctor's office tests. though I test in the fasting range there too? I do know the word for the tester thing but I am brain fogged at the moment

coming out of my well to shame the fandom re: treating Nico like he's from 1840 rather than 1940 in terms of living with medical innovations
Vaccines for the following diseases were available during this time:
Smallpox- first generation vaccines were available and work on second generation vaccines occured in the 1930s with production of an egg-based vaccine begun by the Texas Department of Health in 1939. DC schools required smallpox vaccination for children to be allowed to attend by 1930, so Nico would have gotten immunized for this even if he didn't get anything else.
Diphtheria- first vaccine was developed in 1913, then a cheaper version in 1924. Yep, it's the "antitoxin" they call for in Balto (1995)- it can be used to either treat active infection or immunize.
Pertussis (whooping cough)- first vaccine was licensed in the US in 1914, then another in 1931, and another that became the basis for the modern vaccine in 1932.
BCG vaccine for Tuberculosis (TB)- first available in 1921, but neither the US nor Italy mandated it. This vaccine is still given around the world today.
Tetanus ("lockjaw") - first vaccine was produced in 1924, then a more effective version in 1938. The combo DTP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccine was first released in 1948 and was used all the way up to 1996 when a new, safer version was released.
Anthrax- the veterinary vaccine in use today is based on the one developed in 1935 in South Africa. The Soviet Union developed a human vaccine that was available beginning in 1940.
Yellow fever- the vaccine still in use today (17D strain) debuted in 1939.
The first rabies vaccine was developed in 1885, for crying out loud!
Penicillin was used to cure infections as early as 1930, though it didn't hit mass-production until 1945. Other antibiotics (Salvarsan and Prontosil) were in use in the early 1900s (by 1910 and 1935, respectively).
Thyroxin (1914) and insulin (1923) were known quantities for treating endocrine disorders.
Medical radiography (x-rays) was a thing before 1900. There were portable ECG/EKG machines as early as 1927.

I have to say, I know that the science shows that trans athletes on HTR are usually in-line with the physical capabilities of their fellow cis atheletes...but saying "estrogen degrades a trans woman's athletic abilities" just feels like we're capitulating to the idea that women are weaker than men and offering legitimacy to the idea that sex/gender segregation in sports is correct and based on biological reality, and not the real truth, which is that people with estrogen-dominant endocrine systems can absolutely go toe-to-toe against athletes with testosterone dominant endocrine systems and win and society doesn't like the idea of a "woman" beating a "man" which is why women are shoved into women's leagues where they can be paid less, treated like shit, and ignored.
Like...I know it's small steps with some people, but desegregating sports has been a major feminist talking point since I was a little kid and we should never, EVER lose sight of the fact that women not being able to play against men has absolutely NOTHING to do with athletic ability and everything to do with people hating women, especially ones that can, and do, beat men. The entire anti-trans athlete argument is based on the idea that cis women are biologically weak and cannot, under any circumstances, beat a man at any test of physical or mental ability, so if we let trans women(who are seen as men by these people) play against cis women then the cis women will always lose.
And that is not fucking true, and it's not untrue because "estrogen makes you weaker", it's not fucking true because women are just as strong and capable as men and can beat them in a fair fight and they always fucking have been. Using this argument is akin to critiquing the draft by saying the way to fix it is to make it so women have to sign up too. You're missing the point, the draft existing at all is the problem and you should not legitimize it's existence by trying to force women to deal with it too. No one should be drafted.
And, again, trans and cis and intersex women can play against and beat trans and cis and intersex men at sports. And trans men can also beat cis men. The problem is not who is strong and who is weak, it's that segregating sports by gender is fucking stupid sexist bullshit, it always has been and it always will be and we should stop doing it.
Also the existence of sex/gender segregated sports will always be exorsexist and intersexist and harm anyone who doesn't fit into the bullshit false sex/gender binary. We shouldn't separate sports by gender or sex because HUMANS cannot be truly separated by those things. There's too much variance and diversity. Intersex kids and nonbinary kids and any kid who falls outside the binary ALSO deserves to be allowed to play sports. And in a system where we still have "men's" sports and "women's" sports athletes that aren't men or women are left in the fucking dust. WE SHOULD NEVER SUPPORT A SYSTEM THAT DOES THAT.
So please, stop using the argument that estrogen makes trans women weak like "real women" and that's why they should be allowed into women's sports. On top of just being a really fucking sexist thing to say in general, it's ceding ground to deeply misogynistic and racist beliefs about women and their abilities, on top of legitimizing a system that fucks women over constantly and was built specifically to hold women back, and we can absolutely defend trans athletes(as well as intersex and nonbinary athletes) without falling back on the idea that there's only two sexes/genders and being a woman makes you weaker than a man always no matter what and testosterone is a magic ticket to being strong and makes you good at sports.
When a transphobe asks if you think it's okay for men to play against women you do not answer by explaining that estrogen HRT makes trans women as weak as real women or that trans women are actually women or that trans men are as strong as men due to HTR or are men, you respond by saying yes, I do fucking think it's okay because segregating sports by gender is horseshit that started with a bunch of misogynistic racists throwing a fit about a black teenage girl striking out two of the greatest baseball players of all time in the same game. Women's sports were born out of wanting an excuse to stop women from achieving as much as men, to pay them less, ignore them, and treat them like shit and we should move past that as a society. Idc what the reasoning is, supporting this binary ass view of sex and gender as if it's based at all in reality is not helping trans people, it's hurting them. If you can learn that the old guy in charge of FIFA used to say if female players want to be paid attention to they should just dress sexier despite the US women's team outperforming the men's team all the time and somehow still think any of this is about ability or skill or some biological reality then you aren't serious about trans and intersex liberation and do have a lot of internal misogyny you need to work on.
Stop defending trans people by legitimizing sexism and sex/bioessentialism. Women are strong, trans and cis and intersex, and they can do absolutely anything a man can do, as can nonbinary(intersex or not) people and trans men. The idea that any woman is biologically weaker than any given man is wrong. There is no biological reality supporting this idea. Stop telling little girls that they're weak, especially trans girls and trans men(since people see them as broken women who are weaker than men and shouldn't be allowed in men's sports) holy fuck, and stop telling them that the existence of women's sports is some just and correct thing when they're literally based on the idea that women are frail, weak little flowers who could get blown over by a stiff breeze and never beat a man at anything and were created as a response to women beating men at sports.
For now I do 100% believe trans kids should be allowed to play sports on whichever side feels right for them for any number of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with biological ability or winning, but aside from that, I don't actually think that trans women should be playing women's sports because I do not think women's sports should exist at all. All people, trans, cis, intersex, ect. should be able to play against each other because that is the world that actually protects and cares for trans and intersex people and women. Discard the binary, stop pretending women are weaker than men, stop erasing the bigoted reason women's sports even exist in the first place, and NEVER say that estrogen degrades athletic ability. You sound like the guy who tried to keep women out of the Boston Marathon on the basis that "no women could actually run 26 miles" that's who you fucking sound like when you say that. So stop fucking saying it.

hi! i was wondering your opinions on how hrt affects the body? i hold a lot of radfem beliefs but i am trans (taking testosterone). would being a woman to you have to be completely about chromosomes? for example, trans men years on T do not have the same genetic makeup as cis women. same with trans women on E, their genetic makeup would be very different to cis men, and would more correlate to cis women. does this factor in who you consider female/male or having experience as women?
Hi there, thanks for reaching out.
Firstly, I think you may be a bit confused. Taking exogenous hormones does not affect your genetic makeup. Your dna will stay the same unless you're exposed to something extreme like radiation - this is a good thing because dna mutation is bad for you and causes cancer! Your genetic sex is immutable, a person with XY chromosomes cannot have their dna altered to have XX chromosomes instead.
Hormones will affect the expression of your genes, for example turning on facial hair production in women who are taking testosterone. This is why those patterns of facial hair, even in women, differ from person to person. The genes for it were already there, but hormone replacement therapy uses the endocrine system to change what signals get sent to your genes to tell them what features to express.
Beyond chemically induced genetic expression, there are particular physical features in males that do not occur in males, and vice versa. This is a feature of the /ancient/ evolution of sexual reproduction. Despite the variety of metaphysical beliefs about identity and personhood, the truth is that humans evolved to reproduce between two sexes, and human beings cannot change sex. Every cell of your body has your sex encoded within it. This affects us physically in many ways. I and most feminists believe that this fact should be irrelevant to any person's ability to pursue their passion, be themselves, and love who they love. Even so, recognition of biological sex is something important. This is really critical in a medical context. For example: men who receive a blood transfusion from a pregnant or recently pregnant woman have an increased risk of death by transfusion-related lung injury. Another example: tracheostomy tubes differ in size depending on sex due to dimorphism in average tracheal diameter. A women who is reported as a male risks considerable injury by having a male sized tracheostomy tube forced into her windpipe. A considerable amount of medications differ in dose effectiveness and side effects based on biological sex. Something as straightforward as a heart attack has different symptoms depending on if the patient is female or male. Denial of biological sex is dangerous, and as it stands, medical science has not advanced enough to change the biological sex of an individual. If you are born male, you will stay male for your entire life. You say that a transwoman who has taken estrogen is more genetically similar to a woman, I'm sorry but that simply isn't true. A male person will always be more genetically similar to other males than to a female person.
Determination of sex is very simple, it's about the easiest genetic test to do. They have kits for high school classrooms to try out ffs. We need to leave the "meaningful sex change is possible through medical intervention" thing in the past, all we accomplish with that is giving people false hope and an unattainable goal to fixate on. Sex is real and immutable, I wish it didn't matter, but it does.
And why it matters is, maleness and femaleness have become inseparable from certain stereotypes and assigned qualities by societies in human history. Overwhelmingly, the male people subjugate the female people. Since men, male humans, discovered womens' ability to give birth could be taken advantage of, it was capitalized upon. And this is the foundation of patriarchal society. Religions were founded to justify this as the will of god. To deny that women have historically been persecuted due to their sex is, well, misogynistic. There is no "woman feeling" that makes us targets for child marriages, FGM, trafficking/prostitution, and other horrors from the minute we're born and even before. No, it's the sex we were born with that makes the world think it can decide our fate. In fact, the way that people treat male children differently from female children is so different so early, that we are genuinely unable to study human behaviour unaffected by gendered expectations. This is what feminists are talking about when they discuss "socialization". There is not a single man on the planet who knows exactly what it's like to see the world from a woman's eyes, no matter how feminine that man is. Womanhood isn't something you can achieve or acquire through effort: you were either born a woman or you weren't, just like you were either born with detached earlobes or not. It's so simple.
All that to get to my final point: Yes, I believe the definition of womanhood comes down to biology, because anything beyond that is a meaningless stereotype. Women can do anything, be anyone, look any way they want, go through any experience they do. The one thing they have in common is that they are female adult human beings. There is not way to fail at being a woman or do it wrong, you just are. Womanhood is the experience of having been a female person in this world, and nothing else. There are certain things only female human beings need, like abortion and female contraceptive rights, access to spaces where we can be safe from our subjugators (male human beings), and the ability to define ourselves and fight for our collective rights.
(At this point you may object and point out that male people who identify as trans women are also subject to violence and scorn from men: unfortunately that is often the case, but this does not make male people who identify as women, well, female. We need solutions for them that do not involve requiring women to sacrifice our comfort and safety for the sake of a particular subset of men, because of the inherent risks involved and the fact that women do not owe men anything even when those men have it bad.)
One last thing: my opinion is that prescribing exogenous cross-sex hormones is unethical (so are all elective cosmetic medical procedures but that's a post for a different day). I understand the distress that gender dysphoria inflicts on people, however the ill effects of hrt are too numerous to condone. The huge increase in risk of stroke with estrogen, heart disease and uterine atrophy with testosterone, and the way that trans medicine studies are notorious for losing followup with patients after a year or less... it's short sighted and frankly, financially motivated. The amount of trans patients who are prescribed hormones without access to an endocrinologist, it's honestly infuriating. People deserve the best care possible, not lab rat bullshit where they cut you loose when it's not working out. I won't judge anyone for what they do to themselves to cope with distress, but I want everyone, especially girls, to be aware of the lifetime effects medical decisions may have, and that you also can find happiness within yourself without hurting your body.
