September 12th legacies: Matt, Carl, Rebecca and Marc Asaro Hero father: Carl Asaro Sr.
Rebecca was 9 when her dad — along with every member of the 15-man shift at Midtown’s Engine 54/Ladder 4/Battalion 9 — was killed on 9/11. It was the heaviest loss of life suffered by any single firehouse that day.
“We never found my dad, so there was never really closure for us,” she said.
Today, all four of the firefighting Asaros serve in Manhattan: Carl, now 33, at Ladder 23; Matt, 32, at Engine 33; Marc, 27, at Engine 22; and Rebecca, 29, who was thrilled to be assigned to their father’s old outfit, Engine 54.
“I am literally following my father’s footsteps every single day,” she said.
“Some days I don’t think too much about 9/11,” she said. “But working that house, seeing the memorial there, you really can’t avoid it.”
To help preserve her father’s memory, she offers tours to visitors, showing off the bronze bas-relief panel at Eighth Avenue and 48th Street that pays tribute to him and his lost comrades.

just realized that owen strand’s backstory in lone star is based off of a real firehouse in manhattan. engine 54/ladder 4/battalion 9 lost 15 members of their house on 9/11, every person on that shift and the most of any firehouse in the city. owen strand’s firehouse lost 14, because he was meant to be the only survivor that day.
engine 54/ladder 4/battalion 9 is on 48th and 8th and is called the pride of midtown because they are. and i should know - they used to be my local firehouse. i’ve baked them cookies and brownies. they’ve invited me in and given me official FDNY swag that you can’t get in a souvenir store.
i moved out of the neighborhood, but they continue to take care of broadway, which is why the comedy and tragedy theatre masks are painted on their doors. i still walk by the memorial to those 15 firefighters on a regular basis, and those on shift always have a smile and a wave if the garage is open and they’re sitting on a truck bumper, waiting for the next call.
a couple of years ago, i was walking past and a father was holding up his young son to look through the window because the bay was shut. the side door opened a moment later, and a firefighter stuck his head out:
“hey, buddy, you wanna come sit in the truck?”
he did.
pride of midtown, indeed.

Big Big Thank You to FDNY Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 Time Square 48st and 8th ave Firehouse!!! - photos by yours truly Jon Hammond #Engine54 #Ladder4 #nevermissedaPerformance https://www.ny1.com/.../midtown-firefighters-honored-for... “Pride of Midtown” Firefighters Honored on 9/11 for Making the Ultimate Sacrifice By Rocco Vertuccio Manhattan PUBLISHED 12:41 PM ET Sep. 11, 2020 They are the names of 15 men, read aloud ever year on September 11th to ensure they are never forgotten, especially on this day. For the firefighters and families of Engine 54 Ladder 4 Battalion 9, forgetting is impossible. This firehouse in Midtown lost more members on September 11, 2001 than any other in the city. “When you come to work every day, you are reminded of the fact that those guys sacrificed their lives trying to save other people,” said firefighter John Fila. 15 fathers, sons, husbands, brothers and uncles who responded to the World Trade Center to save lives ended up losing their own . Al and Maureen Santora’s son Christopher was one of them. “I miss his smile, his laugh, and the fact he always was a person who could tell a joke, get into mischief and spark up the whole room,” said Mrs. Santora. He was just 23 years old. He had been with the FDNY for only two months. Christopher joined to follow in his father’s footsteps. “I’m very proud of him. He was doing what he wanted to do, this was his lifelong ambition. He wanted to be a firefighter from the time he was a little kid,” said Mr. Santora. Every year on 9/11, these families and members of this firehouse get together at a memorial park around the corner on 48th Street to honor the fallen. It brings them comfort but the pain never goes away. “When people say closure, there’s no closure. It’s a lifetime sentence. There is no parole,” said Leonard Ragaglia. He lost his son Lenny on 911. The names of these fallen men are also listed outside the firehouse. It’s a reminder to those who walk by this busy part of Manhattan, of the FDNY’s service and sacrifice, every day and especially on this day.
