Sharks are getting high on cocaine due to drug-contaminated water in Brazil

Brazilian researchers analyzed 13 Brazilian sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon lalandii) off Rio de Janeiro’s coast for this study.

Sharks off the coast of Brazil have been found with traces of cocaine, and scientists are concerned about the drug’s potential effects on their behavior. 

While a drug-fueled great white shark might sound like the stuff of fiction, the reality is both troubling and alarming for marine life. 

Cocaine seeps into the ocean through various means, including insufficient sewage treatment and discarded drug packets, leading to unexpected consequences for aquatic species.

congratulations to me i have completed the online course and readings portion of the master naturalist certification program....hopefully doing the first of two required field days next weekend, and then will get started on 30 hours of volunteer work 🎉

honestly highly recommend master naturalist programs to anyone in the US who wants to learn more about their local nature + get involved with relevant volunteerism; the course wasn't difficult and while i felt like i had a good knowledge base going in i still learned A Lot, and i am excited to Meet People And Do Things. it's modeled on the master gardener program you may be more familiar with. they vary a bit from place to place but most states have one!

Golf courses continue to be a menace...

A new study finds an increased risk of developing Parkinson's Disease if you live within 3 miles of a golf course:

"In this population-based case-control study, living close to a golf course was associated with an increased risk of developing PD. We observed that risk of developing PD was greatest for those living within 1 to 3 miles of a golf course and that the risk of PD generally decreased with increasing distance from a golf course. We also found that individuals getting their drinking water from water service areas with a golf course had nearly double the odds of PD compared with individuals getting drinking water from water service areas without a golf course. Additionally, the largest effect sizes were for the association of living within a water service area with a golf course in a vulnerable groundwater region."
