Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Round 1

Book summaries below:
The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.
But when the Eastwood sisters—James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna—join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote—and perhaps not even to live—the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.
There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.
Fantasy, historical fiction, alternate history, turn-of-the-century, adult
The Tamir Triad series (The Bone Doll's Twin, Hidden Warrior, The Oracle's Queen) by Lynn Flewelling
For three centuries a divine prophecy and a line of warrior queens protected Skala. But the people grew complacent and Erius, a usurper king, claimed his young half sister’s throne.
Now plague and drought stalk the land, war with Skala’s ancient rival Plenimar drains the country’s lifeblood, and to be born female into the royal line has become a death sentence as the king fights to ensure the succession of his only heir, a son. For King Erius the greatest threat comes from his own line — and from Illior’s faithful, who spread the Oracle’s words to a doubting populace.
As noblewomen young and old perish mysteriously, the king’s nephew — his sister’s only child — grows toward manhood. But unbeknownst to the king or the boy, strange, haunted Tobin is the princess’s daughter, given male form by a dark magic to protect her until she can claim her rightful destiny.
Only Tobin’s noble father, two wizards of Illior, and an outlawed forest witch know the truth. Only they can protect young Tobin from a king’s wrath, a mother’s madness, and the terrifying rage of her brother’s demon spirit, determined to avenge his brutal murder….
Fantasy, epic fantasy, secondary world, magic, series, adult

Lebor Gabála Érenn
I swear I'm stopping soon! But just when I think I'm done with Ireland, another of these tales pop-up on my radar.
Here are some miscellanea of incest couples that appear in the book Lebor Gabála Érenn ('The Book of the Taking of Ireland'). These names come up in lists of geneology and there's little story for the characters, it's basically 'A is daughter of B and had C with her own father', so it means it's a clean slate for us to imagine whatever dynamic we want between these characters.
I'm using the R. A. Stewart Macalister translation.
Book IV
Delbaeth (also known as Tuireann), King of Tuatha Dé Danann (the gods or fae folk) is the father of Danand (or Mórrígan, 'great queen'), with whom he fathered three children: Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharba, who "were the three gods of Danu, from whom is named the Mountain of the Three Gods" (p. 103);
Fiacha, son (and successor to the throne) of Delbaeth and Ernmas and Danand's brother, had three daughter with his own mother, Ernmas: Banba, Fotla, and Eriu (p. 131);
Basically Delbeath and Ernmas have a bunch of children, then Delbaeth hooks up with his daughter and has triplets with her, while Ernmas hooks up with her own son and has triplets. Lots of triplets in this family. And these triplets are basically all important gods, with Eriu herself being almost a personification of the whole Ireland (which was called Ériu at the time).
Book V
Érimón, King of the Milesians (other group of invaders, more human than the Tuatha Dé Danann), married his own mother, Scota, after the death of his father. The unexpected bit is that Scota is said to be the daughter of the Egyptian Pharaoh. Actually, I think that there's no mention of her being mother to Érimón, only that she was married to his father (p. 75);
Anyway, Érimón might not have married his mom, but he certainly married his sister, Odba, with whom he had three children: Maimne, Luigne, and Laigne (again with the triplets!). However, Érimón is a huge dick and abandoned Odba in Spain for a new wife in Ireland, Tea (p. 41);
Meanwhile, Donn, Érimón's brother, was married to their other sister, Díl. They both drowned in their trip to Ireland (p. 57);
So what de we learn from the Lebor Gabála Érenn? If you commit incest, you will end up having triplets who will either de Irish gods or Irish High Kings.
The story of Book IV would make such a funny sitcom. Specially if Delbeath and Ernmas don't know the other is also in love with one of their children, so they are both going behind each other's back and cheating, meanwhile Danand and Fiacha are just chilling and talking to each other how much they are in love with their parents.

Ruthless Savage (Irish Mafia Savage Kings series) by Lilian Harris

Ruthless Savage (Irish Mafia Savage Kings series) by Lilian Harris A new steamy AGE GAP Bodyguard Irish Mafia STANDALONE Eriu Quinn is off-limits. Too young. Too innocent. And far too forbidden. Her father is the head of the Irish Mob. And I'm just her bodyguard tasked to keep her safe. She's my job, but she's also a maddening temptation. One I need to stay away from. But I underestimate that feisty little spitfire. She creeps under my skin. Pushes all of my buttons. Until I unravel... I can’t resist the untouched Irish princess. With every hungered look, with every illicit touch, I want her more. Downright needing her, until the lines start to blur. But I can't have her. She has no idea who I truly am. My past is as dark as it is dangerous. And my enemies are coming. If she’s mine, they’ll come for her too. When her life is threatened, I have no choice but to save her. Though saving her comes at a price. Ruthless Savage is a standalone age gap mafia, bodyguard, grumpy/sunshine romance with a feisty heroine, and a possessive, touch her & I'll unalive you type of hero. It contains a HEA. https://amzn.to/4drxBwJ #BookEnticer #reads #books #audiobooks #bookblogging #bookaholic #audiobooklovers #romance #fantasy #whattoread #bookblogger #listening #arc #alc #currentlyreading Read the full article

The Morrigán

Name: The Morrigan (Great Queen, Phantom Queen,) Mor Rioghain, Morgain, Mórrígu, mór rígain, Morgan La Fay, The Bean-Nighe or The Washer At The Ford, The Wife of the Green Man, the Wyrd Sisters.
Symbols: Raven or Crow, spear.
Goddess of: Battle, prophecy, fertility, and sovereignty
Usual Image: A shapeshifter, she appears in many forms, a beautiful maiden, a mature woman, an ancient hag, a crow, a bear, and others.
Relatives: Ernmas (mother) Cailitin, a Druid or Delbaeth or Dagda (father) Anu, Badb, Macha or Badb the Crow, Nemain the Venomous, Fea the Hateful. (Sisters or other aspects of her or goddesses she presided over.) Eriu, Fotla, and Banba (other sisters and goddesses of the land, not other aspects of her) Mechi (Son, father unknown) had three hearts, which were three serpents. The serpents, it was foretold, would destroy Ireland, so MacCecht killed him and burnt the hearts, throwing the ash into the river Berba; even then, the ash of his hearts boiled the waters of the river away and killed all the fish in the river.
Holy Books: Book of Leinster, Book of Fermoy
Synodeities: Kali (Hinduism,) Cathbodva (Gaul.)

(The Watcher of the Ford, illustration from Cuchulain, The Hound of Ulster, by Eleanor Hull 1904)
Details: Once you look into the myths about the Irish goddess Morrigan you begin to understand why the Celts developed the Celtic knot!
At her most basic, Morrigan was a goddess of battle, who did not take part in the battle itself, but instead stirred up strife, then flew over the battle in the form of a crow who picked who would die by casting confusion on them, afterward feasting on their remains.
Not your warm and affectionate sort of goddess, yet she was also a goddess of fertility and sovereignty, without whom the king would be powerless.

Going deeper into Morrigan (or The Morrigan as this may have at some time been a title) we find that she is also a triple goddess, who, along with either her sisters Badb and Macha or, in some accounts, Nemain the Venomous and Fea the Hateful, play a shifting role in scores of myths and legends.
What brings this goddess back in so many forms and guises, and age after age, returns in another form, even if this means mixing aspects that are both grand and horrific?

An answer might be found in the theory put forth by Ralph Abraham, mathematician, historian & Chaos theorist, in the book Chaos, Gaia, & Eros (1994, Harper Collins.)
To oversimplify it for this page, his theory is that three main forces have driven human consciousness through the ages, which he calls.
Gaia: The physical existence and living spirit of the created world.
Eros: The spiritual medium connecting Chaos & Gaia, the creative impulse and
Chaos: The creative void, the source of all forms.

From the Paleolithic to the present, these three forces moved us forward, with at times one or more of them being suppressed only to resurface again and again.
Whoever the original goddess was who returned as the Morrigan, she was most likely first worshipped in a very different form sometime between 10,000 & 4,000 B.C.E. During what he called the Gaia span (agriculture/partnership.)
With the coming of the Eros span, 4,000 B.C.E. to +/- 1962 A.D. (the wheel, patriarchy & science), she was re-imagined by a new way of thinking that often feared Chaos and almost always had, as part of its dominant mythos, the conquest of Chaos by a hero or god representing Order.

In this way, Morrigan changed from life-giver to carrion eater, and yet the three forces she is a part of continue to bring her back in multi-triad forms.
So that as the Eros span grew, she was not undone or put away but continued to shapeshift.
Changing from setting as a raven on the shoulder of dead Cú Chulainn to reappearing as Morgain La Fey in the tales of King Author, or as the wife of the Green Man and tempting Sir Gawain, to stirring the cauldron for Macbeth as the Wyrd sisters, and later as part of the Celtic Fairy faith, becoming the Bean-Nighe who is seen washing the bloody clothing of those who are about to die.
The thing is, in this theory, the Eros span has now begun to be overtaken by the now-developing Chaos span (Neo-Pagan, Post Modern, Chaos Theory, and meta-modern), which offers the hope of the end of the suppression of these three forces so they can be understood with positive effect.
No doubt the form that Morrigan takes in this era, if his theory is correct, will be most interesting indeed!

January Book Reviews: The Bone Doll's Twin by Lynn Flewelling
This book has been on my radar ever since it was recommended in a tordotcom post. Also, I liked Flewelling's other books. Prophecy states that Skala will only prosper when ruled by a queen of the ancient line. But Erius seizes the throne from his sickly sister-- and begins to eliminate his female relatives as potential rivals. When a new heir is born, two wizards disguise her as a boy using dark magic in hopes she can come of age and challenge Erius.
Everyone knows that girl-disguised-as-boy is a very gender trope. But here, Flewelling exceeds herself to add even more gender per gender. Tobin has the body of a boy, is raised as a boy, and no one tells him about his origin story or that he has to be a girl one day in order to retake the throne. Which is understandable, since he's under twelve for most of the book, but it still makes for a very transgender narrative.
ALSO this is a very good fantasy book in its own right. It's much more tightly plotted and sleek than Flewelling's other series. I also like how the book plays with genre a little-- it's half high fantasy and half gothic horror, which is a fascinating combination. Tobin's trapped in a crumbling castle, haunted by his mother, his dead twin brother, and by the sins of the past. There are GHOSTS and also CURSES. And blood magic and a little bit of necromancy.
Very fun. Highly recommended if you like epic fantasy.

Queer Fantasy Books Bracket: Round 1

Book summaries below:
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him. When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free. However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie up some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave. Fantasy, young adult, romance, paranormal
Fantasy, secondary world, epic fantasy, magic, adult, series

A Big Life Update
14 SEPTEMBER 2020
“Hey guys. I’ve been super busy again and as per usual I’ve forgotten to post on my blog. The girls are growing like weeds and if I forget to post for too long, they might be completely grown up. So a few things I wanna have a vent and write my thoughts about. This blogs always been my diary hasn’t it?
1. Housing Situation
Deimon is currently in the process of selling our old home. While it was our dream home it was too much for us to handle and possibly even a bit too much for us money wise to keep. He is living in Eriu Fe still as am I, we’re just on our own at the moment.
2. Deimon and the girls
I don’t know what to say, well how to say it in the nice way i want too. Deimon has Evie any chance he can, our schedules are wack so we work on a weekly basis and see what works. Any who, he refuses to take Paige, at first he blamed my breast feeding, but I pumped gave him formula for her and he just straight out said no. I think we know why. We’re hoping to go out for lunch one day and see what the future has in store for us. We aren’t sure what to do just yet. So for the Karen that's been wondering, there is your gossip piece.
3. Evie Update
Evie’s been showing signs of wanting to toilet train lately, so weve set up a potty and a book and shown her where her undies are and she seems very excited. We haven’t properly started it just yet, so expect another blog post when it all does go down properly. Also we have successfully broken the dummy addiction, I just hid them all and said they were gone and she was okay with that.
4. Paige Update
Paige is sitting up on her own now, she’s beginning to get up on her knees and rock which is a big sign of crawling happening soon! She’s finally cut her lower tooth and we are awaiting on a appointment for a physician about her head shape. But more on that when it happens and in her monthly update next week.
5. Aubree’s Coming Over Soon
Nothing more on that really, just expect some pictures of the girls!
I think that's all I have to write about right now, but at least we’re all on the same page”
