Your post "Activism is Not Cold-Calling" came across my dash. The point about building community to persuade makes a lot of sense to me.
You mentioned several trainings you've taken and taught as a volunteer labor organizer that discusses the specific nuts and bolts of it. I am wondering if there are resources you'd recommend for someone wanting to add tools to the toolbox. I'm not organizing labor; I'm a parent interested in improving equity in the local schools. But I think at least some of the strategies should transfer well, and I'd like to learn more.
Thanks.
Hi there! Your instinct is very, very correct: a lot of the organizing principles used in union drives transfer well to different forms of organizing. Things like structured organizing conversations and workplace mapping are incredibly useful skills.
Personally, I think the best comprehensive top-down view of effective organizing for a beginner is Jane McAlevey's works. Jane passed away this past summer. We really lost a true titan, an absolute force of nature; but she's left behind a wealth of invaluable materials - books, articles & other writings, interviews, speeches. The first few pages of No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age rewired my brain and made me think about organizing in a whole new way, and I've read that book practically to death, it's barely hanging on lol. You can find McAlevey's works here: https://janemcalevey.com/
Of course, McAlevey's oeuvre is very union-focused and goes deep. If you're just looking for some quicker concepts, Labor Notes has tons of study guides, handouts, and other bite-sized materials that explain organizing concepts. You can buy them on the site (support them if you can!), but they're mostly also pretty easy to find online, or modified versions other people have made. Labor Notes also runs regular online trainings which are excellent.
Lastly, I know you said you're not specifically doing union stuff, but on the off chance anyone reading this is interested in unionizing their workplace: check out Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee. You can contact EWOC directly and they will help you organize your workplace, and they also have their own excellent resources and run regular trainings. You can also get involved by becoming a trained organizer (like me!) and volunteering for them. (EWOC is, of course, American; if any other Canadians are reading this and interested in organizing, feel free to DM me and I can put you in touch with people.) EDIT: I'm seeing people in the notes of my post recommending IWW's materials, and they are so right! Look up "IWW Organizing Manual" and "IWW Organizing Basics." They are great & digestible reads, and IWW has many more resources on their site and archives. (If anyone else has resources to recommend, have at 'er!)

A disgruntled Tumblrina (gender-neutral) made a website and why you should too.
Or "reject social media, return to personal websites".
PART 1: THE PART WHERE I CONVINCE YOU TO MOVE TO PERSONAL WEBSITES
So, the Web 2.0 social media infested landscape seems to be crumbling before our very eyes. Reddit's leadership is increasingly greedy, Twitter is sinking under the weight of Elon's massive, yet increasingly fragile ego, Tumblr is slowly turning into another lifeless corpo-fest, complete with the layout, Instagram continues to be vapid and soulless and Facebook seems to be going the way of MySpace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(feel free to check the alt text on these, btw)
In these troubling times, where everything looks the same and you're expected to be milked for every dollar you're worth, what is a disgruntled Internet surfer such as yourself to do? Move to an untested alternative that's bound to get overrun by fascists thanks to poor moderation? Stay the course on the sinking ships you're used to?
Well, what if I told you that we've solved this problem way back in the 90's and early 2000's and were merely duped by the Big Zuck into forgetting our legacy? What if there was a cure for the sanitized, dull social media hellscape?
Tumblr media
It takes a bit of work, when compared to just using a social media site, but even if your particular use case makes switching difficult (ex. an artist looking to promote their work), it's still a good secondary option to consider.
The core appeal is the ability to customize and individualize, make a corner of cyberspace unabashedly yours,
It can also be an exciting avenue of creative expression, giving whatever you want to say a unique coat of paint,
Most website hosting services are a bit more lax about what you can do on them, due to changes in the profit structure (rather than depending on advertisers and investors, they either have a premium option to give supporters perks, have another product, or, in the case of paid services, you renting that space IS the product),
If you want your website to be more accomodating and accessible, you don't have to file tons of feedback - do it yourself,
If you'd like to connect with other webmasters and promote each other's websites, we have webrings - sets of circular links that connect websites with something in common, be it a topic, aesthetic or friend group,
You're less likely to have your stuff purged by an ill-advised change in policy (especially if you have a backup of your files somewhere),
The more people do it, the less power those massive social media corpos have over the internet,
It can be a load of fun!
If I have you convinced, keep reading into part 2. If you just wanna see what I did, skip to part 3. If neither, feel free to continue scrolling. I won't hold it against you. You'll be missing out, that's all.
PART 2: SO, YOU WANNA MAKE A WEBSITE!
Good choice, here's some resources!
sadgrl's absolute beginner's guide to Neocities - what it says on the tin!
W3Schools - a more in-depth tutorial site, a learning resource so excellent it substituted for what I was supposed to learn in technical highschool (because our teacher just told us to go on W3Schools instead of teaching us shit)
A list of free layouts for your website - whether to use as a base to learn from or to simply take for yourself,
Neocities - the posterchild for free website hosting for personal websites. Doesn't allow video or audio, but you can get around that by linking those files from elsewhere. Beginner-friendly to a fault - once you have an account just drag and drop your files in,
Gitlab (& Gitlab Pages) - a more advanced option, but it has a few advantages of its own. Gitlab is a website hoster second and a version control service first - which is programmer speak for "keeps track of changes in your code and stores a backup of it online". it helps a lot when working on multiple devices or co-writing with a friend. And secondly, you can use Gitlab Actions to automate putting your website up (even on Neocities, like I do!)
My askbox - I am not joking, if you have any questions about any of this, I'd love nothing more than to help you out!
But with most of my indie web propaganda out of the way, it's time.
PART 3: Welcome to Timewatcher OS.
Tumblr media
Of course, because I couldn't be normal when it comes to making a website, I had to turn it into a fake operating system. Each subpage is an "app", opened in a separate embed window. It has unlockable wallpapers (no pay2win, prommy). There's bideo games on it! I even made a music player for it so I can share my incongruent music tastes!
Like I said in my Tumblr bio, if I ever go radio silent for more than a month, it means I've gotten fed up with this hellsite and moved to my own homepage permamently. And I highly advise you make an option like this for yourself too! Lastly, if any of y'all would like to start a webring, do let me know in the askbox - I'm down to manage it if I'm not alone in there.
Anyways, I hope I convinced you to make a website, or at least check out some of the cool sites you've been missing out on! Hope to see you on the Old Web!

Hey! I was wondering, do you speak any old Irish, and if so, how did you learn it? Im interested in learning!!
I can read and, to a certain extent, write in Old Irish. (Most people don't speak it, but we are taught how to pronounce it...which was actually an impediment to me learning Modern Irish, because I'd had the older stuff first.)
There are a couple of options! The easiest, if you have the time + money, is always to take courses, which is how I did it. As part of my MA, I was required to take classes in both Old Irish and Welsh, and I've continued taking courses in my PhD. Now, if, for some reason, you don't have the ability to casually drop a few thousand Euros on a MA degree, there are a couple of sources I can point you to. If you do this, I can also try to walk you through it to the best of my ability, and I can assign you homework.
First off: Quin's Old Irish Workbook and Strachan's Paradigms. With most copies of Strachan's paradigms, like the one you see on Archive.org, it's kind of neat because people add notes to it over time, so it's also deeply personalized to the Celticist, like a family bible.
I'll tell you immediately: the current editions of both of these are quite frail. They fall apart quite easily, since they're softcover. (I eventually had mine custom-bound together.)
Stifter - Sengoidelic: Old Irish For Beginners. It's VERY in-depth, slightly intimidating, but there are lovely cartoons of sheep to make it slightly less scary.
Ranke de Vries - A Student's Companion to Old Irish Grammar
Antony Green - Old Irish verbs and vocabulary
Rudolf Thurneysen (trans. D.A. Binchy): A Grammar of Old Irish. I'm going to tell you now: This book is DENSE. It is technical. It is OLD. It is EXPENSIVE (especially if you want a good copy, since the one I got was so thick that it was actively falling out of its hardcover binding; I ended up buying an older copy.) BUT...it will help your Old Irish. It's still considered to be the definitive book on Old Irish, even though it's eighty years old at this point. So: I recommend it, but I'd recommend it after some of the others. De Vries is probably the most beginner friendly.
Now, after all that, you will need places to practice your Old Irish.
I highly recommend anything from DIAS' Medieval and Modern Irish series -- they tend to have very good dictionaries, so it isn't like you're being tossed into the deep end. Most of these are technically later than the Old Irish period, but they ought to give you a taste for the basics. (The problem with Old Irish is that Middle Irish was basically creeping in even from the time of some of our earliest texts.) One of these, which you can get online, is Compert Con Culainn and Other Stories, ed. Van Hamel.
Also: Thurneysen's Scéla Mucce Meic Dathó.
Ernst Windisch: Irische Texte mit Wörterbuch
If you can get ahold of it, Vernam Hull's edition of Longes mac nUislenn is also excellent.
When you're reading these texts, I recommend you to make a note of the case, number, and gender (nouns) or the classification, tense, number, whether it's adjunct or conjunct, and whether it's deuterotonic or prototonic, etc. (verbs). Mutations, including invisible mutations (nouns and prepositions). Every bit of information you can parse out, so you can instantly recognize words as you come across them and what they are doing in a sentence.
Finally:
I'm sure you've heard this before, but Old Irish is notoriously difficult as a language. Having Modern Irish helps (particularly re: vocabulary, where you'll see a lot of familiar words), but the language has also radically changed. The verb in particular has totally changed the way that it's formed, going from a predominately synthetic language to a predominately analytical language (Munster Irish is closest to Old Irish in terms of verb formation, though each dialect preserves little bits of it.) Old Irish is significantly richer as far as vocabulary, and it had many more declensions (stems), each of which has its own way of doing things. You had more tenses. You had a neuter gender (though that was already going by the wayside). The definite article was totally dependent on the case, number, and gender of the noun (preserved these days in 'an' and 'na', but it used to be much more comprehensive). You had a full dative and accusative case (no ablative, thank God.) You had infixed particles, and those were divided into three classes depending on the classification of the verb. And adding to all that is that the language was already changing, so the Old Irish that you will be learning in the textbooks is not 100% what will be reflected in the editions. I've been doing this for six years and I still need to use a dictionary + paradigms. (Keeping in mind, though, that my Old Irish has also actively decayed in the States.)
The point isn't "don't do it" -- I'm not in the business of scaring people off. BUT I'm saying that it's okay if it takes a while, or if it seems overwhelming or even impossible. (It's also okay if it comes naturally; some people ARE naturally good at it.) The best piece of advice I have EVER gotten about Old Irish was what an older gentleman told me my first day of my MA program, which is: "Old Irish becomes a lot easier when you remember you'll be learning it your entire life." Take your time, enjoy it, let it sink in, play with it. Pursue the texts you want to read, read the texts you already enjoyed in English in Old Irish, even if it's a couple of lines at a time. ENJOY the process, and don't feel pressured to learn everything at once.
You have a lifetime to learn it.

Chinese Learning Apps I've heard good things about:
Pleco - a great dictionary app. The free Clip Reader area is a reading tool where you can paste any text in. There's also one time payment add ons that can be purchased depending on one's needs.
Readibu - a reader app for Chinese specifically, has better translations than Lingq. Free version is fine for reading. Most online pages can be imported into Readibu if you paste the URL into the 'search' for reading material area. So if you want to use Readibu to read webnovels or news articles, that is possible. If not, try Pleco's Clip Reader tool instead to paste in text from online.
SuperChinese (in app store it's the monkey icon) - I've seen people recommend this instead of duolingo and lingodeer, they have lessons with grammar and vocabulary up to HSK 6 from what I've heard. If anyone knows what HSK level they teach up to, please feel free to add that to this post.
Dot Languages (in app store it's the polar bear icon) - an app with graded reader articles by HSK level. Recommended for HSK focused vocabulary, and providing good reading materials.
Hanly: Chinese Decoded - a free app for learning some of the most common hanzi. I have looked at it and it has similar information to some beginner hanzi reference books, certainly enough to get started learning. Hanzi taught with radicals, which is useful.
Skritter - an app for learning hanzi, recommended for Chinese as much as WaniKani is for Japanese, teaches a LOT of hanzi. Comparable to bigger hanzi reference books that exist (and Skritter has more hanzi than some popular hanzi reference books I've seen which only include the HSK hanzi).
Youtube - searching "Chinese lessons," "Chinese comprehensible input," "Chinese listening," "Chinese learning podcast" and other variations will help you find a LOT of channels that teach Chinese. You can look at this Mandarin Input Media google spreadsheet for browsing the CI Lessons youtube channels and some other Chinese materials on youtube. The spreadsheet does not include everything, there's so much on youtube! Youtube also has cartoons, podcasts, shows, and audiobooks. Try out Mandarin search terms in youtube too!
Special Mentions (not apps, but useful websites that you can use on your phone if you want):
HeavenlyPath.notion.site - an excellent site for looking up reading material recommendations by difficulty. Their Comprehensive Reading Guide - from Beginner to Native Novels article is an excellent guide for learning how to read, what tools can be helpful, and what Graded Reader resources exist. If you want to start reading webnovels, I highly recommend exploring that site and it's guides.
Vidioma.com - if you struggle to find material on youtube to study with, this site shares youtube Chinese Comprehensible Input Lessons, categorizes it by difficulty, and tracks your study time. So you can just open up this site, click 'beginner' videos and start watching. Or 'intermediate' or whatever level suits you. It may also help you if you find being on youtube directly distracts you, and you end up watching other stuff that isn't for learning Chinese. Vidioma was made by someone learning Chinese, and his goal is to make a free site for Chinese like the Dreaming Spanish, so learners can just log on and watch CI Lessons to learn and see their progress go up. Maybe it will motivate some people. I find the site useful for finding new stuff at a level I understand, since I don't have to sort through Youtube on my own and guess of the difficulty of a given video on Vidioma.com.
If you're a Total Beginner, and want to start studying primarily with apps, I recommend SuperChinese and Vidioma.com at first.
I recommend some other Structured Resource like a textbook or course (from a Library or eLibrary) if you'd like to use physical resources primarily.
If you like learning primarily by listening, ChinesePod101/Innovative Languages Chinese is a good course to start with (that's the name of the course on Hoopla if you want to check them out from the library for free - Innovative Languages owns LanguagePod101).
If you want to learn primarily with reading, reference Heavenly Path's Comprehensive Reading Guide.
On my Beginning to Learn Mandarin - Resources post, I went over exactly what I used toward the bottom after the purple text "Want to copy what I did?" I studied primarily to read, so the resources I used skew that way. And I used a smattering of different things, you do not need to do the same.
For more details about picking learning resources, read below the cut.
If you are a Total Beginner, I recommend sticking with 1-2 resources and just going through and completing them before picking a new resource. If the resources you pick do not include all 4 skills reading, listening, writing, speaking - then pick as many resources as you need to get coverage for all 4 skills, or focus on just 1-2 skills at a time.
Most good Structured Resources will cover at LEAST listening and reading, and then you may have to get creative to practice writing and speaking. Some Structured Resources cover ONLY listening or ONLY Reading, so use a resource limited to just 1 skill if that skill is one of your more important goals. (Example: Vidioma.com covers ONLY listening, Readibu covers ONLY reading. However, youtube videos often have captions so they can be used for BOTH listening and reading if you turn captions on, and many webnovels have audiobooks so one could BOTH read a webnovel in readibu AND listen to the audiobook online to practice both skills). If you get creative, most resources you find can be used as listening and reading practice. Structured Resource classes (such as at university, or online free on Coursera) usually cover all 4 skills - the textbooks/lesson materials usually cover listening and reading, and then the class exercises force you to practice writing and speaking.
If you are using self-study resources then you may have to wait to practice writing and speaking until later, or use a different resource (tutor, language exchange partner, class, a journal and voice recorder on your own) to practice writing and speaking.
On my Beginning to Learn Mandarin - Resources post, I went over exactly what I used toward the bottom after the purple text "Want to copy what I did?" I studied primarily to read, so the resources I used skew toward that skill. And I used a smattering of different things, as I tried to figure out what would work best for me.
Some other useful posts for Total Beginners: Free Structured Resources for Beginners, Common pitfalls Beginners fall into - and how to get out of them (TLDR: stick to 1-2 resources that are working for you for a while, and finish them!), How to Learn a Language: Making a Study Plan.

Congrats on publishing your game, it's really cool! I was wondering if you created the dialogue system from scratch, or if you've used a plugin like Dialogic, Dialogue Manager, and so on :)
And if it was made from scratch - if you recommend any resources for learning to code such things!
Hihi!!! Thank you so much anon!!!! It doesn't quite feel real to me yet - making a game had always seemed like such an unobtainable dream... And what a fun question!!! Yes, I did it from scratch - I (was) very much a godot beginner, and I wanted to use this project to learn the base engine as much as I could!!! Conclusion: ... Doing it from scratch sucks. I didn't make my own plugin or nice system either (that's what I want to do on my next project maybe), I just went in raw - each event is an instantiated scene and it's dialogue is just stored in a dictionary. It's hectic and a bit spaghetti, but I'm glad I did it for learning purposes. Speaking of learning!! I have a little bit of misc programming experience (mostly python and html lol) but i had an excellent introduction to gdscript and godot from this early access course by GDquest.
If you're brand new to coding, I also recommend CS50 from Harvard Uni (free!!! online!!!). It's so so good but it is a lot, I got a friend to do it with me so that I could actually stick with it.

#I have an idea but no time: TGCF as online game (inspired by The King's Avatar, but it matches with any similar)
World, where you can realise your dreams. Where two powerful leagues - Heavens and Ghosts - divide the believers between themselves and fight fiercely in numerous battles. Magnificent graphics, millions of quests, powerful artifacts and skills, creative world-building system, expensive rewards in tournamens for the best of the bestes - the TGCF really is the top online strategy of all time!
And meet Xie Lian - once a prominent top fighter in national Heaven league (nickname - The Martial god in the flower crown) with his rich father as a sponsor; however, he tried to help some minor players with a quest and as turned out it was the fatal ambush🫣. He died, lost some levels, XPs and precious artifacts and was kicked from the dominant clan, Heaven Capital, because he couldn't keep the pace in the important tournaments. At the same time Xie Lian left online gaming for several years, because his father became bankrupt and died, took any jobs (because he didn't finish university due to constant cybersport tournaments), and lived in shelters - he didn't even have a smartphone!
Finally he found a more than less permanent place in the small internet cafe as an office manager (administrator and cleaner all-in-one). He curiously looks at beginning gamers and tries to give advice, however mostly are outdated in the modern versions of the games. His colleague (Ling Wen) encourages him to create an account there using one of the communal computers if he wants to enjoy the game in his free time. XL tried, but he messed up the stats (zero luck maybe), which is very dumb and hard for beginners single players. But luckily he receives a minor quest from Heaven league (The ghost groom) and the story begins again.
Meanwhile Hua Cheng, who is the mysterious informal ruler of the Ghost league (he uses clones and changes skins very often, so no one knows what his avatar really looks like), desperately searches XL in both online and offline worlds. During the years (he was that minor player, whom XL helped in the ambush), he mastered unique skills - Silver Butterfly Storm, Dice Teleportation and some other perks (self-made legendary-leveled artefact E-ming of course) in the hidden and nightmare level quests. But all those years he loved XL deeply, kept all his game posters and photos from the media in his mansion (HC became a very rich guy, he's lucky in gambling), and humbly expected to see his beloved again.
Meet Jun Wu, the righteous and mighty ruler leader of Heaven league, who is also the head game administrator… that's how he cheated and created Bai Wuxian, the powerful Ghost King, and played dirty on both sides, keeping a self-imagined balance of good and evil.
Meet Mu Qing and Feng Xin, the excellent fighters of the Heaven league, ex-university friends of XL. They are colleagues (and rivals) in the real life, and… if both of them want someday to invite their rival in his home on cup of coffee, that's impossible because of the huge posters and merch collections (General Nang Yang in MQ's home, general Xuan Zheng - in FX’s). Yes, they adore each other's avatars (and not only avatars😏). Yes, they think that the other doesn't know who the other is (not true🙄). Both blame himself for XL falling.
And the others:
brothers Shi (older collaborate with JW in the grace of his brother place in League; younger is a popular game blogger);
He Xuan, a powerful summoner of Ghost league and HC ally; once was kicked out from Heaven league. Learned the clone technique from HC and began to spy in Heaven league as a middle level player. For that, he befriends Shi Qixuan (but now he's not so sure that it was a good idea🤔).
Heaven league commander Pei Ming, who loves fighting and flirting (on-line mostly, but baby, if you is so pretty in real life, I'm all yours 😘)
Mei Nianqing, ex-game administrator (knows all JW deeds, but still in love with his ex-husband🙄); works as a hidden agent of cybercrime and tries to gather ANOTHER evidences (not his own, he just can't betray his love) of JW’s crimes.
Challenging tournaments, powerful monsters and level-bosses, intrigues on the both sides of screen - are you in the game? 😜
(please 🥺)

Hello,i'm kind of a beginner writer, so I hope to ask for your advice on some things if you don't mind !
I have written some scenes before, like based on prompts/some characters in my head/ OCs that I draw. And lately, I have been thinking of making a visual novel. There's this short story Idea stuck in my head, and I have a general idea of how I want the game to play out.
But as I said, I'm kind of a beginner and never took writing seriously before. My main Forte has always been drawing .
1.So I understand that I have to do research on everything that can be a sensitive topic, but I just don't know how much research I should do to fully understand the topic enough to write about it.
Add to that,I can't really buy online writing courses,I can't really just venture into a library and try to find a book randomly that will help my research bc there'snt any good "library" around my area.so my only option is to read online/buy books online. And that's being to research books by name.
So can you help me with that ?
For example:
if one of my characters suffered in their backstory quite a bit, kind of became traumatized. Have been surrounded by toxicity all their childhood/have been forced to fend for themselves/abused verbally.
2. Do you know any books that explore their emotions, how to deal with this, how can they heal and etc ? I have bought the emotional wound thesaurus online and some other books of the same author. But I don't think they are enough? Are there any series/standalone research books like them you would recommend? Also, that's kind of a me problem, but I like it if the research books don't just drop information upon information on me,I liked how the emotional wound thesaurus laid it out so I don't get bored/overwhelmed.
3. my inspiration comes from: some books that I have read (not many) + IFs I read + manhwas/webtoons + other visual novels. So i'm going to write this story based on a story structure,my ideas, and that's it ,like going in blind. But im not sure if this is a good idea in terms of writing. since I have never done something like that before,I keep thinking that I might not be able to execute this idea of mine probably, that I haven't read many books before so I don't have enough experience. And the idea of all the things I must do to become more "experienced" sucks the fun out of it.
4. also, I have really no one to review my writing, well except my cousins and some of my friends who might be willing to read it.
That's it. Thank you in advance!
Writing, to be honest, is very like drawing. It's the same thought process, the same consternation over details and the same struggle to put your daydreams into something.
I will be honest, I don't believe in those writing courses. Writing is trying and failing, just like drawing. There are thousands of resources on this very site to help with writing and there are millions on the internet. If you don't want to pay for books online, you can use Internet Archive, the Open Library, Read Any Book. As for researching trauma and the issues surrounding it, online medical resources are a godsend as are forums of people discussing their own experiences.
I would recommend trying some biographies of people with those problems or their own accounts of their experiences of dealing with the trauma and healing. Charity websites or websites that drum up awareness of these issues are widely available and provide excellent insight. Real people are your guide here. Research into these areas can be difficult on you so please take time away if you are effected.
You don't have to be experienced. I was 12 when I first wrote my first story and it was god awful. Honestly, it keeps me up at night. It haunts me. You don't become a writer overnight, you earn each page, every word. It is hard, it is draining, it is work. Treat it like a job. You are in training and you have to try. Make a plan if you're comfortable with that and try to stick it it. By the sounds of it, you have a plan. Stick with it, see how far it gets you. But I will be honest, you have to read, reading is how you become familiar with stories, the flow of words, the way chapters and arcs might be constructed. Think of it like this, if you were an architect you would look at other buildings. If you were a doctor, you would have to meet a human. This is hard work, accept it now and you won't be daunted later.
You can find beta readers here on Tumblr or you can used the people you mentioned. You may be guarded at first, everybody is because it is never perfect at first, but if you're at ease sharing by all means do.
