Jorge Ernesto Ruiz-Cano grew up in Venezuela and graduated high school at the age of fifteen.  He then came to the United States with hopes to become a lawyer despite the fact that he had previously told family and friends that he would grow up to become a Disney animator.  After taking a few art classes, law school became a distant memory as he attended Art school and earned a talent development internship with Walt Disney Animation Studios.  Six years later he has worked on a number of Disney films and is a Character Animator for this month's release, Ralph Breaks the Internet. In his presentation last week Ruiz-Cano spoke not only about his early life but what goes into creating the ideas and concepts that eventually becomes the characters of our favorite Disney films.  He explained that the drawings he showed are quick sketches of ideas simply to "pitch" to the directors and head animators in order to get approval to move on to the next phase.  He then specifically showed the beginning phases of one of his favorite characters, Mr. KnowsMore (voiced by the very talented Alan Tudyk; Firefly) from this new film. Ruiz-Cano spent the next forty-five minutes exciting us with his passion for animation, imparting some wisdom, joking, and pointing out an Easter Egg from Moana (in the pile of bones in the giant crab's psychedelic lair is the Genie's lamp from Aladdin).  He discussed what it means to him to be a character animator working on projects that audiences love.He then elaborated about some of the challenges of making Ralph Breaks the Internet, especially how to recreate the internet in animated form. He stated they spent numerous meetings discussing how to represent the world wide web.  He also mentioned Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) as Yessss and how they worked to animate her personality in the characters.  Finally, he mentioned what a thrill it was to have the actors who voiced the Disney princesses come into the studio to reprise their roles in what was truthfully one of the best scenes in the film.Ruiz-Cano is clearly passionate about his job and he is eager to share that excitement with everyone he meets.  He had many antidotes and insights about Walt Disney Animation and making Ralph Breaks the Internet that kept us entertained for an hour.  It's clear he loves his work and it shows in the quality of the products he helps produce.

In 2013, Kevin Kwan released his novel, Crazy Rich Asians. After the novel became a bestseller, two others followed - China Rich Girlfriend in 2015 and Rich People Problems in 2017. The success of these books brought us the 2018 film adaptation also titled Crazy Rich Asians and, now, you can get the Blu-ray to relive your favorite parts of this comedy or to watch for the very first time.
Rachel (Constance Wu; Eastsiders) is dating and Nick (newcomer Henry Golding). Both are young professors at NYU. After dating for a year, Nick invites Rachel to Singapore for his best friend's wedding. Even though she is nervous, Rachel jumps at the chance to go and is excited to meet Nick's family. The trip also gives her a chance to visit her best friend from college, Peik Lin Goh (Awkwafina; Ocean's Eight), who also lives in Singapore. However, Rachel's nerves get worse when she finds out that Nick comes from a very wealthy family.
Rachel learns from Peik Lin Goh just how wealthy Nick's family is and also learns that this makes Nick one of Singapore's most desirable bachelors. To add to her stress, Nick mom, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), isn't too keen on the Amercian he has chosen to bring home and doesn't think Rachel is up to her "traditional" standards. She also finds out some dirt on Rachel's family that not even she was aware of, causing Rachel to feel like she needs to throw in the towel and give up on her relationship altogether.
Crazy Rich Asians is presented in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Images are crisp and colors are vivid. Blacks are spot on and the only thing that is missing is some of the clarity that you will most likely find on the 4K UHD version of this film such as textures that are a bit blurred on the Blu-ray disc. The audio is encoded in English 5.1 DTS-HD MA. While the soundtrack is solid it does have your typical front-loading of its surround sound like most comedies do. This leaves the viewer with little to no actual surround sound. However, Crazy Rich Asians vocals are clear and no dialog is ever lost (unless you are laughing too hard).
Crazy Rich Asians Blu-ray includes some quick extras which provide a bit of a look behind the scenes. These extras include:
Audio Commentary By Director Jon M. Chu and Novelist Kevin Kwan
Crazy Rich Fun – This feature is a behind the scenes look at making the film.
Deleted Scenes
Gag Reel
As the first all Asia cast in twenty-five years, this movie has historical significance while it entertains. We see the strong cultural influences that blend with more modern ideas but we also witness the clashing of these two worlds. Kwan did an excellent job in his novel of contrasting these two ideas as they collide and Jon M. Chu (NowYou See Me 2) followed through with this concept beautifully.
From beginning to end, this film did not disappoint. Everything came together - the cast, the storyline, and even the scenery. The beautiful backdrop of Singapore compliments the romantic comedy perfectly. Stunning aerial views and shots of not only beautiful modern architecture but also some more historical locations enhance the overall feel of the movie. All in all, this is a fantastic film. It has heart and humor and I, for one, look forward to the sequel! Grade: A

Charles Dickens was a novelist known for creating memorable characters and stories that endure. Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield were well-known books that are still studied in school today. Each year in November another of his classics, A Christmas Carol, is revisited in various forms all over the United States. There have been numerous stage productions and television shows and movies about Ebenezer Scrooge and thirty years ago Paramount Pictures offered their version in the form of the Richard Donner (Superman: The Movie) directed film, Scrooged. With the Holiday season quickly approaching they have re-released the film again on Blu-ray so families can sit down in front of their televisions and enjoy a holiday tradition.
Frank Cross (Bill Murray; Ghostbusters) is the president of the television station IBC and he didn't get the job by being nice. In that vein he has decided to produce a live retelling of A Christmas Carol, forcing his employees to work on Christmas Eve and firing his executive, Eliot Loudermilk (Bobcat Goldthwait; The Police Academy series) for disagreeing with him. However, Frank's deceased mentor, Lew Hayward (John Forsythe; Dynasty), visits him telling Frank that he will be visited by three ghosts and he must change his ways before it's too late.
The first ghost (David Johansen; Buster Poindexter) – Christmas Past – shows Frank how he immersed himself in television after his father left. He also reminds Frank of Claire Phillips (Karen Allen; Raiders of the Lost Ark)," the one that got away" because Frank was to immersed in his corporate television career. Then the Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane; Addams Family Values) shows Frank his assistant Grace () and the struggles she endures along with Frank's younger brother James () who, while respecting Frank, is disappointed with his lack of consideration. Confronted with his awful behavior finally, Frank sees the error of his ways and tries to make amends.
One of the best aspects of this film is the cast. Murray is perfect as the uncaring, narcissistic Frank. He offers just the right blend of nastiness with only the slightest hint of remorse (well at least until the end). Allen is terrific as the altruistic Claire who once loved the person Frank was before he became so ambitious. Kane is fantastic as a snarky, tell it like it is ghost. She adds some comic relief but does it in an endearing way.
The Blu-ray is presented in 1080p resolution with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. For a movie filmed in 1988, the transfer is pretty good with excellent fine details. The DTS-HD Master audio 5.1 is equally as strong with a full and robust soundtrack. The combo pack has a Blu-ray disc, a DVD disc, and a digital HD download. Unlike newer Blu-rays, Scrooged doesn't offer a litany of extras. Unfortunately, the only extra is the theatrical trailer which is a little disappointing.
While the story is old Donner gave it a newer feel (well for 1988 at least) and it mostly holds up through the years. With Murray at the head leading the train, this feature film has a lot to offer and is a great addition to all the holiday films in a person's collection. If you don't own this you will want to get it and share with your whole family this holiday season.
As Christmas time is full of traditions, I say buy this movie and make a new tradition of watching it every year with your loved ones around you. It won't disappoint and will remind you all if what is important in life and not to squander any opportunity to embrace love and family.

Six years ago we fell in love with video game characters Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly; Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman; A Million Ways to Die in the West). These two worked their way into our hearts and stayed there. We routed for them despite their "glitches" and were so happy when things worked out in the end and these two became best friends. After a hiatus, we once again get to catch up with them in Ralph Breaks the Internet; in theaters just in time for Thanksgiving weekend.
Life seems to be pretty simple for Ralph and Vanellope. They work in their games during the day and hang out all night – grabbing root beer at Tappers and playing in the other games in Litwak's (Ed O'Neill; Modern Family) Arcade. When Vanellope expresses her boredom Ralph tries to help her out of her rut by creating a new track in her game but when things go awry the steering wheel gets broken and Sugar Rush is shut down. Suddenly Ralph and Vanellope only have a few days to get a new steering wheel before Litwak sells her game for scraps.
In an effort to save Vanellope and her game, she and Ralph venture out into new territory – the internet. There they find one wheel – on eBay. Unfamiliar with how eBay works they end up bidding $27,001 for the replacement part only to discover that they have 24 hours to come up with the money to buy it. At first they find a shady guy who tells them if they can steal Shank's (Gal Gadot; Wonder Woman) car from Slaughter Race they will have enough to pay for the wheel but when that fails they get hooked up with Yesss (Taraji P. Henson; Hidden Figures) who created viral videos for Ralph to raise the money. Meanwhile, Vanellope loves Slaughter race but doesn't have the heart to tell Ralph she wants to stay.
Reilly and Silverman are terrific together which is what makes this film (and its predecessor) work so well. Their vocal talents really make these two come alive for fans and it's great that they chose to reprise their roles. The additions of Gadot and Henson add another layer to the story and they are perfectly cast as the bass ass and the wheeler/dealer respectively. Alan Tudyk (Firefly) offers a fantastic cameo (but I expect no less from him) and it is a real treat that the original voices of the Disney princess agreed to reprise their characters for this film – and have some of the best scenes in the movie! There is also a bittersweet animated cameo of the late Stan Lee.
The animators really outdid themselves with this sequel. The colors are incredible and the attention to detail is amazing. They created so many truly memorable characters like Mr. KnowsMore (Tudyk) and Shank that the audience can't help but be taken with them. The story is also well done and engage if just a tad too long. The messages of endearing friendship and embracing change hit home although they do so in a melancholy way that brought a tear to my eye.
As sequels go this one hits the mark. It is enjoyable and entertaining and offers TONS of Easter eggs for the audience to dissect. The Disney team did a wonderful job visualizing what the internet might look like from the inside and gives visuals that are exciting and funny. This a certainly a film that the whole family can go to see and find something they can each relate to. With a heartwarming story and humorous moments peppered throughout, Ralph Breaks the Internet swings and hits a home run.

When Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg work together we, the moviegoers, are undoubtedly prepared for a fast-paced and excitement-filled movie ala Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor. We are also likely to be treated to an action film that is able to connect its characters to the audience.
Mile 22 delivers an action-centric, yet, otherwise, flawed, thriller. The film's taught, and tense opening sequence belies the rest of the movie's performance, never living up to the expectations set in the first 20 minutes.
We are introduced to James Silva (Mark Wahlberg- The Departed, Boogie Nights) and his Second in Command, Alice Kerr (Lauren Cohan- The Walking Dead, Supernatural). After a quick backstory, explaining the recruitment of the bright yet angry young Mr. Silva by the CIA, we learn the premise of the film from the inimitable John Malkovich, portraying the Overwatch Leader, Bishop.
The premise isn't original, and reminded me of Clint Eastwood's, The Gauntlet, but seems simple enough:
An elite paramilitary team called Overwatch is tasked with transporting a police officer (Iko Uwais) with vital information about a potential terrorist attack 22 miles across Southeast Asia from the American embassy to an airfield. With the help of high-tech communications expert Bishop (John Malkovich) and second-in-command Alice (Lauren Cohan), leader Jimmy Silva (Mark Wahlberg) and his team must outrun local military, police and gang leaders to complete their mission.
At just over 90 minutes, the film desired to deliver a taut, action thriller but falls a bit short in many of its intended targets, including providing us with characters that we can connect with. Being the first part of a three-part film series, this could have been on purpose to leave the backstory for part 2.
Unfortunately, there's not enough time spent getting to know the characters. Even after seeing Lauren Cohan's troubled relationship with her ex-husband and her separation from her daughter, at the end, after almost being killed, bringing Iko Uwais safely to the airport, she is told by Wahlberg to "Go be a Mom for 6 days" She replies, "I'll be back in 5." Really? Mother of the year, in training.
What is a bit upsetting is the limited use of Iko Uwais (Raid: Redemption, Star Wars Ep 7) martial art skills. His frenetic, explosive martial arts choreography was so heavily edited it looked amazing but not spectacular. While most of the fight set pieces were well choreographed by Iko Uwais they left us with a feeling of what-might-have-been.
It isn't an entire loss. Mile 22 provides standard action fare, with a bit of an unforeseen twist, and leaves off with the promise of a continuation, which we may never see, given the lackluster box office. Hopefully, it will do better in the home market and we get to see a sequel sometime soon.
The Universal Blu-ray provides us with an MPEG-4 AVC 1080p resolution and it looks great. The environments are sharp, even in the dimly lit interiors of the apartment building sequence; through the smoke and gunfire, we are treated to great clarity, especially up close fight scenes, the blood and drops of sweat seem ready to roll off the screen. What is a very nice surprise is when you redeem the digital code (iTunes Only) for Mile 22 you get the 4K version digitally.
The audio, while not Dolby Atmos, is DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless, and provides a solid atmosphere for an active playground. Explosions, gunfire, even the conversations in the Overwatch Command, as well as the Russian ops center, all provide a vibrant, rich tapestry, which plays well in surround sound.
The extras are short (none over 4 minutes in length) and to the point and lack the depth of many other special features we come to expect from a major studio release. A few of note are Overwatch, Introducing Iko Uwais, and Iko Fight. It was also interesting to see how Columbia doubled as the Far East. I really enjoy his other films and was looking forward to seeing him unleashed here. His talents are a bit hampered by the quick edits, but if you are a fan, you will appreciate him in this movie.
All in all, Mile 22 is a flawed, but fun action film. It could have used another 20 minutes to develop the characters and elaborate on the plot. Mile 22 doesn't deliver Jack Ryan or Jason Bourne but if you are looking for solidly acted, and a polished looking, action thriller, Mile 22 should satisfy; besides it's always fun to watch some knuckles get bloodied, and shiny things go boom!
Here's hoping for Mile 22 Part 2 and Raid 3!

Apple has partnered with A24, a distribution, financing, development, and production company, in a multiyear deal to bring films to Apple TV. A24 is responsible for films including Moonlight, Ex Machina, The Disaster Artist, and Lady Bird, among others. This will be an exciting addition to Apple TV's beefed up TV lineup which includes series starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Momoa, Octavia Spencer, and Chris Evans. There were also reports that Apple was going to launch its own subscription-based service, and these new deal with A24 would bring a lot of content to the table.Originally, rumors were swirling that Apple was going to purchase A24, which was founded by John Hodges, David Fenkel and Daniel Katz. The rumors began after Hodges exited the company earlier this year.

Jack Reacher, the Lee Child Book series that has been adapted for the big screen, is now possibly getting a TV adaptation. According to Child, there is already a deal in place for a series. The Reacher films starred Tom Cruise but he won't be involved in the TV version. Child said that they will find an actor who fits the description of Jack Reacher in the novels - someone much larger and brutish. "I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He's a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun. But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it's a big component of who he is… So what I've decided to do is - there won't be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead, we're going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor", Child in an interview with BBC Radio Manchester. "We're rebooting and starting over and we're going to try and find the perfect guy."The book series spans over 23 novels and the films Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back were released in 2012 and  2016, respectively.

She was a talented writer. She had compassion and conviction. The combination made her words powerful and she became one of the most respected war correspondents in the world. That compassion and Conviction are also likely what got her killed. Running into war zones while others ran away, she told their stories… the soldiers, the innocent civilians and the ruthless leaders. She traveled the world, often into hostile territories to get the stories and when she did she told them as only she could. She made people sit up and listen while championing the underdog. Her name was Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike; Gone Girl) and A Private War chronicles her life while she chronicled others lives.
Colvin worked for the British newspaper The Sunday Times beginning in 1985 until her death at the age of 56 in Homs, Syria. Eleven years earlier she lost her left eye while under siege in Sri Lanka. Instead of a deterrent, it served to strengthen her conviction to cover war stories. Some might have said she was crazy while others would have called her driven but whichever it was, she was certainly brave and courageous.
She watched as friends and colleagues were killed and she also suffered her own demons. Colvin was institutionalized for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at one point but after recovering went right back to the front lines to continue her work. In 2012 she went to Syria and, even after all other reporters evacuated, she stayed behind to reveal the lies being told, mainly that civilians weren't being targeted. After speaking with Anderson Cooper on CNN News she and her photographer Paul Conroy (Jamie Dornan; Fifty Shades of Grey) attempted to leave only to be bombed. While Paul was severely injured, Colvin lost her life.
Pike is masterful as Colvin. She portrays her as strong on the outside while damaged underneath. The vulnerability makes Colvin seem somehow more human and Pike offers a range of emotions with a nuanced performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. Tom Hollander (Bohemian Rhapsody) is great as Colvin's Editor, Sean Ryan and Dornan offers more depth than we have seen from some of his more recent roles. The ensemble cast overall is strong, which is needed for this material. Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) also has a great cameo as one of Colvin's lovers and helps to reveal her softer side.
The script by Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco) gives some terrific opportunities for Pike to shine and to allow the audience to see a glimpse inside Colvin's psyche. Director Matthew Heineman (City of Ghosts) certainly doesn't shy away from the graphic images of war. His visuals are haunting and, I can only imagine, realistic. They are sometimes difficult but necessary to watch as they set the scenes. They help establish Colvin's frame of mind while she reports these atrocities and gives the audience some semblance of insight as to what these reporters deal with on a regular basis.
While watching scenes filled with mangled bodies and death – especially those of children - the candor with which the story is told and depicted helps set the stage incredibly well. The film portrays the complex woman very well and Pike does an excellent job of getting the feel of the film across to audiences.
The movie is haunting but does the life of Marie Colvin justice. It couldn't have been easy but it was an important life and the film pays homage to the brilliant woman behind the faces of wars and conflicts all over the world. Sadly, with her death, the innocent have lost one of their bravest warriors on a global stage.

Warner Bros. has an amazing capacity for bringing the unknown and mysterious to life. I can think of more than several movies wherein the audience becomes so invested in the characters, the storyline, and the ending that the edge of the cinema seat is the most worn part of the chair. The thriller movie of the summer can be your thriller movie of the holiday season. We've seen movies with really big monsters before but nothing like Megalodon- or Meg, for short. Warner Bros. clearly brought the seat on the edge of your seat movie with The Meg.
The Meg is a prehistoric sea creature thought to exist only in historical lore. Lo and behold, what happens when humans decide to explore unexplored waters? Specifically, water that's never been breached before. In the floor of the ocean that turns out to be a ceiling of another, much deeper, layer of the ocean, lies The Meg. Coming up for air after many, many years, the question remains- why now? Why did the scientists' breach of that ceiling/floor all of a sudden force The Meg, into our waters, instead of staying far, far, away? Terrorizing everything that comes its way, and things not in its way, The Meg is not alone. Stay out of the water, humans- we have company.
Starring Jason Statham (The Transporter), The Meg is an action-packed thriller. Statham plays Jonas Taylor, who is a deep-sea rescue diver. His background story consists of a failed rescue attempt, where he had to leave the crew of a sub to die. No one believed his story of a monster attacking that sub and never having dived since Jonas spent the last few years drinking his memories away. Jonas only agrees to assist in this rescue because it is his ex-wife that needs rescuing and in doing so, he is vindicated in that he now has unfortunate proof that the monster does indeed, exist. While the rescue is successful, Jonas is unable to return to his drunken beach life when The Meg appears and Jonas must help find a way to keep humanity safe from the Megalodon.
Statham provides most of the humor in such a serious themed movie and allows is sarcasm allows the audience to breathe for a moment in between the action-packed scenes. Nonetheless, the other actors provide a strong performance and enhance the movie. Meiying (Shuya Sophia Cai; Somewhere Only We Know) is the young child of Suyin (Bingbing Li; Transformers: Age of Extinction), the main scientist on the crew. Meiying captures the heart of Jonas and helps him care about life and people again. The dialogue between Jonas and Meiying seems to be a back and forth between two adults- one smarter than the other- and in most cases, it is the child who is smarter. Cai is amazing in the movie and the famous scene where she is in the glass-encased walkway when her ball lights up and attracts the Meg is definitely another Warner Bros. edge of your seat scene. Li's on-screen chemistry with Statham is subtle and works within the storyline and provides that bit of romance that every movie needs.
The 4K UltraHD Blu-ray is presenting in HDR in 2160p. The special effects are amazing and the deep underwater colors really seem inky and clear at the same time. Again, the color differentiation between the dark sea, the colors of the flashing lights on the ball, and the sudden appearance of the Meg are so contrasting that the colors of the scene cause the viewer's eyes to be glued to the television screen. The audio is presented in Dolby/Atmos-TrueHD. Sound quality is crisp. There is no strain to hear and understand dialogue despite, for example, ocean sounds and helicopter sounds in the background.
The 4k UltraHD Blu-ray also comes with a 1080p HD Blu-ray, which not only contains the full-length feature, but also three Special Features, lasting about 25 minutes total. Creating the Beast is a featurette on the way that the Megalodon was created in all its layers. Chomp On This: The Making of The Meg is a featurette about the making of the movie. The third Special Feature is entitled New Zealand Film Commission and shows how although the film is set in the waters outside of China, the surrounding area of New Zealand and its waters became home to the filming of The Meg. This set also comes with a digital code so you can take The Meg with you wherever you go.
The Meg is a fast-paced, fun-filled thriller, with an amazing cast. Despite the seriousness of the content, the actors manage to make enough light of the impending doom of the seventy-five-foot massive pre-historic shark threatening humanity- and their own lives, so that the audience does not feel the entire movie is doom and gloom. The writing flows and the storyline keeps the audience engaged. The Meg is not your average shark movie nor is it trying to be a remake fo another famous shark movie from many years ago. The Meg holds its own with its unique storyline and is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

About Jennifer Broderick A graduate of The George Washington University and Nova Southeastern Law School Jennifer Fischer Broderick’s fascination with the movie world started when she first saw Snow White on the big screen as a young child. When the producers of the movie Annie held auditions in NYC, Jennifer stood on line in the cold to try out for a part and actually made it past the first few try-outs. A vivacious reader, she is fascinated watching books and stories brought to life on the big screen. Jennifer has passed her love of movies onto her children and they are often found planning their weekends around opening premieres.

Marvel's comic book legend Stan Lee has died. He was 95.Lee was responsible for co-creating numerous Marvel characters including Spider-Man, The Hulk, X-Men Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Captain America, Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Even after leaving Marvel, he retained a title of chairman emeritus for the rest of his life, receiving producing credits and making cameo appearances in various Marvel films. Lee, born Stanley Lieber, was raised by his immigrant parents and through a family connection, became an assistant at Timely Comics, which would become Marvel. His first writing credit was for Captain America in 1941. After serving in the Army for World War II, he was running the operation for Timely, producing monster stories and romance stories, much to his chagrin. After seeing the success DC Comics was having with characters like Batman, Lee took a chance and convinced his boss to allow him to create a superhero. He also created a new way of producing the comics themselves, allowing the artists to have a plot t work with and draw for and then having the dialogue created afterward. In 2002, Lee sued Marvel, claiming he had been promised a percentage of the profits from both TV and film productions. In 2005, he reportedly received a $10 million settlement.Lee received the National Medal of Arts in 2008 and the Producers Guild of America's Vanguard Award in 2012. He was also the subject of a 2010 documentary titled "With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story."Lee was predeceased by his daughter Jan Lee in 1953, his wife of 69 years, Joan, in 2017 and leaves behind a daughter, Joan Celia Lee.

Terrorism is a worldwide threat and as the saying goes… "we don't negotiate with terrorists". But what if they somehow found a way to infiltrate the most secure aircraft in the world...Air Force One? What if they took the President of the United States and his family hostage? What if they were holding all the cards but meeting their demands would alter the fate of Europe? In 1997 we got a glimpse of what that might look like when the action, drama thriller Air Force One opened in theaters. Starring Harrison Ford (Raiders of the Lost Ark) the movie offered two hours of pulse-pounding tension of what could happen if something when terribly, terribly wrong.
The film opens with the capture of Kazakhstan rogue general Ivan Radek (Jurgen Prochnow; Dune) being captured by combined American and Russian forces. Fast forward three weeks later to the President of the United States' speech where he vows that we won't negotiate. That same night he, his family and members of his cabinet board Air Force One to return to the United States. However part way through the flight, the plane is hijacked but not before the escape pod ejects allowing for the President's escape or so it seems.
It seems the plane has been taken over by Radek loyalist Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman; Darkest Hour) who is demanding his release. He vows to shoot a hostage every half hour until the general is let go but unbeknownst to him President Marshall is still on board the plane and attempts to orchestrate a rescue plan. Unfortunately, things don't go according to plan and he finds himself a hostage too. Korshunov then demands he negotiate the release of Radek but tides change and once most of the hostages are off the plane, the President rescinds that release thwarting the terrorists' plan.
Writer Andrew W. Marlowe (End of Days) and Director Wolfgang Petersen (The NeverEnding Story) offer a heart-pounding, nail-biting film that keeps the audience engaged the entire time. The script is well done with minimal clichés and just a moment or two of humor. Ford is at his best here as the hero and has a commanding presence as the Commander in Chief. Oldman always plays the villain well and this is no exception. You hate him from the beginning and continue to do so until his defeat. Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) as Vice President Kathryn Bennett is strong as well, rounding out a talented cast.
The 4K transfer of this movie is adequate at best. Some scenes have a sharp resolution while others are grainy and lack clarity. The 2160p video is hit or miss here which can be distracting on occasion. Fortunately, the Dolby Atmos audio doesn't suffer the same fate and the sound quality is excellent. The viewer can really feel themselves running around the plane hiding from hijackers with this release. The combo pack offers a 4K disc, Blu-ray disc, digital download, and only two extras which are the audio commentary with Peterson and the theatrical trailer.
It is scary to think that something like this could actually ever happen and makes you wonder just how vulnerable the world's leaders can be. Luckily this is only a film and a damn good one at that. It offers a great cast, strong action sequences and a solid plot that will keep one entertained throughout. In the action/hostage/drama genre it is a top pick along with Die Hard so if you are a fan, you will definitely want to pick this one up during your holiday shopping this year.

If you were an African American in this country in the 1960's and 1970's it was a tumultuous time. Desegregation caused violent outbreaks all over the United States. The Ku Klux Klan was building their "army" and recruiting those with similar ideology to join their cause while black men and women were protesting in the streets. There were lynchings and bombings and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. escalated the violence. Little was being done to resolve the issue so Ron Stallworth (John David Washington; Ballers) took matters into his own hands. Based on his 2014 memoir, BLACKkKLANSMAN tells his story.
Stallworth was the first black officer in the Colorado Springs, Colorado police department. Where he was assigned to the records room. While there he was endured racial slurs from coworkers so he requested a transfer to be undercover. His request was finally granted when he was assigned to attend a speech given by Civil Rights activist Kwame Ture (Carey Hawkins, Straight Outta Compton). Shortly thereafter Stallworth was moved to the Intelligence division where he decided to make contact with the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan to inquire about becoming a member. However, before they let him they wanted to meet him first which was a problem considering Stallworth was a black man.
Stallworth teamed up with his Jewish coworker in the Intelligence division, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver; Star Wars: The Last Jedi) who then became the face of Ron Stall worth. As Zimmerman made contact with the Klan members and infiltrated the local chapter The real Stallworth found himself having telephone conversations with the "Grand Wizard" and National Director of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke (Topher Grace. That 70's Show). Over the next several months the two converse while the police build a case against them. On the day Duke came to Colorado Springs to meet Stallworth, He and Zimmerman took down the members when they tried to bomb a black rally.
Washington is excellent as Stallworth and this is a stronger performance than what I am used to seeing from him on Ballers. Driver also does a great job here but he typically is strong in almost any role. Grace holds his own as the mustached Duke. His physical appearance is similar to Duke which aids in his believability. The supporting cast including Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Patrice Dumas and Michael Buscemi (Blended) round out this ensemble well.
The 4K UHD Blu-ray is presented in the standard 2160p resolution with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio and the video quality is exceptional. Despite the rustic feel the movie was given to make it appears as if they were in the 1970's the picture is clean and sharp and colors are true and deep. The Dolby Atmos audio accents the video well and enhances the viewing pleasure of this feature. Dialogue is crisp and the soundtrack makes nice use of all the speakers. Sadly, this combo pack only comes with two extras - A Spike Lee Joint and BlacKkKlansman Extended Trailer Featuring Prince's "Mary Don't You Weep. I would have liked to have had more offerings here especially about the real Ron Stallworth.
What is most amazing about this movie is that it is based on real-life events as it seems highly preposterous that a Black Man and a Jew could successfully shut down a local chapter of the KKK. The script is well done which leads to some excellent performances and Spike Lee once again proves himself to be a cut above the rest director. This is a well-told story and I would be surprised if it didn't garner some Oscar nominations this year.
