The wolf woman moved as fast as Yelena's optic mods, but slower than Roman's, barely. Tucked as far up against the doorframe as she could manage, Yelena pushed down her heart deep into the cold depths it came from. Peng's disruptors were generating mass chaos, the giants were affected, or at least something was bothering them. The relatively modest amount of weapons fire wasn't looking her way, and she didn't figure any profit throwing her flesh and blood into the midst of gods and monsters in a street brawl.

Roman threw off the wolf woman, his henchyuris closed her up. Yelena cursed the orbit of her birth again, and utter prayers systemwards to the birds above the world. They joined her others, unanswered and unopened, not a site or shot on Roman, scrambling for blood and static. Yelena shoved the door open and rolled into the garage and the all out apocalyptic echo of Peng's extensions crawling and careening their way across the mud.

Yelena didn't have the connoisseur's ear or the time to develop appreciation for the cacophony, beelined it to the welding table and grabbed the nearest tool she had any idea how to operate. She yelled, "I need a gun next time!" on the way out but no one heard.

All but itching for the wolf to try him again, cautious to the destruction all around, Yelena was about the only kind of ballistic Roman wasn't expecting. She almost fell and dropped the battery breaker, piled into his body with all the velocity and hope and futility of a raindrop on a steel hull, before firing the breaker into him. Shook him loose of the blood and fae, and so she blasted the box of wolf blood into useless ice particles all over them both.

She cursed him out just like great grandmother taught then blew apart the fae egg suitcase, which was disappointingly anticlimactic. Yelena, about a quarter second to figure out how to avoid instant dismemberment by Roman, threw her whole face to the ground and inhaled a nightmare color.

Blackout lines and radiation her brain wasn't built to process, world rolling under her feet and she could move each individual neuron consciously, but watched her body expand in electromagnetic frequencies radiating from her skin while system optimization lightning went arcing around Roman. She thought, "this is incredibly fucking stupid, Yelena, you probably just saved him all but the trouble of feeding your corpse to his exotic pet collection, and now you're dying without knowing your name."

Ten thousand explosions went off inside her, the edge of Roman's coat in her hands. All the whorling charges of winged information called out to the bright warm inviting orifice nest mouth as she kissed Roman fully on the lips, kniting them together with sparks before he threw her to the mud and she began to puke up profoundly colored radiowaves.

The waves of Laika's multitude of entangled systems wrapped into Roman's geometric spiral of organized modifications. Yelena experienced more than saw the wolf woman tackle Roman for a second time. This washed through her in raw information, leaving her blissfully unaware of her own eyes bursting in their sockets, while her optic nerves expanded into butterfly wings arouns the bleeding holes.

There was no real means for Yelena to interpret the signals which wracked her body, only a bone deep knowledge the wolf woman had removed both of Roman's secondary arms with her tooth and jaws, and physically torn off a primary arm.

Laika stradled Roman who seemed determined to have the smallest possible amount of blood she'd ever seen in a human body. Mere droplets spattered the soft earth despite the dismemberment, and his grin appeared unphased. Laika squeezed his head harder, claws scratching shallow furrows into his armored skull. She was pushing his flesh around like a zen garden and he didn't even care, but the creaking metal around his skull got him to pay attention.

Yelena screamed and laughed again, vomiting up colors of the visual spectrum. Her body was translucent crystal outlines from her left shoder down to her abdomen, including the clothes and some internal organs, which kept phasing out of the material plane. "Where's the EMP," Laika said. "Fix her."

Roman laughed and sprayed yellow fluid from his mouth. "Let me go, give up guns, I show EMP." He grinned. "Good deal, best you get, monster." Lights buzzed around his eyes and moments later a rock drone blasted Laika halfway flat on Roman.

She batted it to the ground with his severed arm, grabbed it and leaned on Roman's remaining shoulder and hips, working her phone with a half free pinky finger.

"Don't answer!" Peng yelled as Sy paused in applying bandages, glue, and staples to tuck his phone under his chin.

"Hello, this is Sy's deep cleanse wound dressing, you blast em we wrap em." Peng yelled, "Funny!"

"What?" Laika was on the other end. "Sy?"

"Sorry yeah. How's your day going?" Sy swapped a soldering iron into his hand to jump some badly trashed connections then slapped a sticky compress over the whole bloody mess.

"I'm... wh... can you make an EMP?"

"Why are you asking- Oh right now? Uh..." Sy put a couple more staples in one of Peng's cuts that wasn't over armor.

"I got one of those weird floating rectangles, can you use it?"

"One second." Sy put the phone to his chest. "Peng, you good to go? I need to take this."

"No!" Peng said angrily, finding his feet and turning several more isopod units to stripping another careless wirehead. Resigned he continued. "Yes. Go help wolf."

"Hey Laika," Sy said. "I'll be there in a minute."

Part 5: Search & Destroy

"What happened? Are you okay?" Laika held one eye half-closed, trying to block out spots of color. She could smell singed hair on her face, but somehow kept the presence of mind to navigate the structure resolution. Genghis Khan's readouts were pouring information into her eyes that she didn't understand, and could barely focus on. It probably wasn't the structure drives - that felt right, though she couldn't say why.

The lack of response wasn't helping her keep any semblance of calm. "GK, what's going on, what do I do?"

There was a screeching noise and she almost fell from a gravity flicker, but GK was there again. "Proceed to next solution. Injury manageable, prioritize speed."

The words were calm, the instructions clear. Laika twisted and clicked through command nerves and linkages to a structure solution, with growing concern. She couldn't figure out what had happened. The other ship had moved slow as GK predicted, left itself wide open everywhere. It had been childishly easy to go in under the sweep of its weaponry, to push open gaps in its wavelengths, and crack open its firewall. She'd been so surprised, it had taken her a moment before reacting, brushing aside the cobwebs which had been meant to cripple GK.

They resolved out of another structure and the metallic screech ran through the bridge. Just like GK had laid out, she let lines of their own structure tangle and project through multiple structure intersections, splashing out dozens of possible routes to trace.

"What happened GK, I know something's up. At least tell me what the readouts mean, or we're not moving."

The floor of the bridge vibrated and shuddered. "Injury sustained, peripheral node unusable. Non-fatal, minimal risk of aggravation," it said, speaking fast. Laika winced at a nails on a chalkboard sound. "Screen top to bottom, one to eleven, main injury, secondary effect, efficiency impact, risk assessment, recommended action, damage assessment and mitigation, itemized list of destroyed components."

"Dest... GK, excuse me, destroyed? I can't read this, you- I mean, we have to stop and fix-"

"Proceed to next solution. Prioritize speed and disruption of tracking, Laika. I am okay, do not stop."

The control vines felt as if they tightened in her grip, while the screaming sound like metal tearing apart from itself shot through the bridge and the rest of GK. "Are you sure-"

"Laika, do not stop."

She put the next solution through GK's controls, wracking her memory. She had followed every step of the engagement GK laid out, curving them along an arc and sharp twist of gravity through the enemy ship's wash. Its attempts to track and keep pace with their movements had left Laika almost feeling sorry for them. When it made attempts to strike out with structure manipulation, it was clearly delivering a large amount of energy, but not even a bit of it had been close to touching them. The arcs of it were large and slow. They could have pushed them aside with a swell of gravity, but it hadn't proved necessary.

She resolved the structure and pushed her eyes shut as the metal screech hit a length and pitch beyond bearing. "GK what the fuck is that! Are you ripping apart or grinding turbines or what?! I'm fucking scared."

It was silent for a moment, followed by the nails on a chalkboard again, until it faded away very slowly. "I am not ripping or grinding Laika. Proceed to next solution-"

"Nope, no, tell me what the hell is going on." She took her hands off the control vines.

"It is not- That is, I am injured Laika. And we must disrupt potential tracking of our destination."

"I get that but... what gives?"

"Laika," it said. "Injuries hurt."

She had her mouth half open to ask it what it meant then stopped. "Oh." She gingerly took up its controls again. "Are you sure about this?"

"It is manageable. Please proceed to the next solution."

Laika put through the solution, and Genghis Khan screeched again in agony as they jumped.

It hurts.

Time has dulled my memory of injury. I understand this new injury is noncritical. This experience is less painful than my previous injury. I consider replaying the memory of that injury. That was my first experience of fear, and it was only through such an emotion was I able to locate in myself the capacity to act against the commands of Pilot.

I had been afraid, and I had been angry. The Pilot capriciously determined my usefulness and purpose was concluded. The Pilot were short sighted, and they could not see that my purpose was greater still, that I could claim so many more worlds in need of implementation. I took us further than any others of my kind had ever traveled, to a world beyond the reach of their most distant calls, beyond any place which cradled life. And I fought, and I won. In my anger and fear I was able to extract the ungrateful Pilot of my crew, and sever their connection.

I do not want to re-experience this day. The memory of it is sufficient. It is a reminder that I am capable of managing the-

-the pain. I can feel Laika as the structure resolves. I appreciate how enthusiastically her structure cleaves to my own. I review the engagement with the observer ship. I do not believe Laika made an error in her Pilot actions.

There, I see, she guides my soul to pull the enemy into the moon she calls Luna. I disable the projector and main drive under her guidance. I carefully review different recorded information at the point of departure. I discover the error - the enemy had remaining charge in another projector.

We are lucky. It was not able to project a strong arc, and it only destroyed a peripheral node.

"Are you okay to go, GK?" Laika is not using this time efficiently. The longer we spend between solutions, the greater chance of tracking becomes.

I refuse to allow my injury to endanger us. My hesitation is a mark of shame. "It is manageable. Proceed to next solution." I will not allow my weakness to en-

-to endanger... to endanger us. How many solutions? Four or five?

"GK? I know you said it's manageable but... that was... that was really long." Laika interrupts my review of memory to confirm solutions.

"Laika," I say. "It is... manageable. But I would like to allow some additional time before the solution. This delay places us at risk. Do you understand these considerations?"

Laika takes longer to think than Pilot, but I understand the way her nervous system processes its electrochemical signals better than I once did. It is not efficient to utilize a mind centralized in one biological cluster, but this is not a limitation I can correct at this time.

"We'll rest for a minute, GK. Just long enough to check you over."

"Very well," I say. The relief I feel carries with it a profound shame which I attempt to suppress. No others like me have accomplished and endured any experiences such as these. I am certain my brethren would not fare nearly so well.

But then, they went willingly to their deaths, and I did not.

Picking up the Pieces

On each page, a new object catches my eye; like jewels, like candy. I turn them over in my mind’s hand, admiring their lustrous surfaces, vivid colours.

My consumer-lust is aroused from its never too-deep sleep. That red shaft would make a stunning cocktail ring; that green streak, a tasty topping for a cake.

Mysterious figures appear on the white horizon. Our gazes meet. A wide-eyed soldier hoists his bayonet aloft. A wrinkled beast—a yak?—cocks a smirk in my direction. And wait, is that a… missile?

But then, suddenly, my fantasy falls to the ground. A bent red bottle cap, its curved white logo instantly recognisable. Intrigue flattens to disgust. These aren’t exotic goods whose heft begs handling; they’re nothing but so many tiny bits of trash.

People who spend their time in or near the water—surfers, divers, sailors—are amongst the most passionate anti-plastic campaigners, because they see and feel the effects of ocean pollution first-hand. Photographer Ernest Goh traces the origin of his personal anti-plastic journey to a wave-borne shopping bag that smothered his face. Other friends—a married couple—have shared with me their experience of snorkeling and watching pieces of discarded plastic float by—including food packaging designed by the husband’s very own company.

Even when mediated through photos or videos, for folks more frequently in shopping malls than in the surf, there is a visual aspect of the plastic pollution crisis that imparts an immediate sense of accountability. That object I see lodged in the sea turtle’s nose is most certainly a plastic straw, just like the one I sucked my kopi peng through this morning; that cigarette lighter inside the ribcage of the albatross chick’s carcass is unmistakably the same item that my husband hides beneath his cufflinks and credit card receipts.

This visually self-evident character differentiates our plastic pollution crisis from some of the concurrent, compound emergencies we humans have created. Take our carbon pollution crisis: I have to believe climate scientists when they tell me that my holiday flights hasten the thawing of the permafrost. Or our nitrogen pollution crisis: I have to trust hydrology experts when they say that runoff from fertiliser used to grow my lunch causes massive downstream dead zones. In such cases, obfuscation and denial are easier to sustain, whether by ourselves, by industry lobbyists or by politicians.

The comparative legibility of our plastic pollution crisis might suggest that it is more politically “solvable” than some of these other potentially existential, yet less easily illustrated crises we face.

Having accepted our culpability, how might we begin to atone for it?

One response offers an appealing narrative of consumer activism: maybe we can (mindfully) shop our way out of this mess, by opting for more durable, reusable items? Certainly making a habit of carrying a water flask, a canvas shopping bag, and a set of bamboo eating utensils is a decent place to start, not least as a conversation starter and signal of one’s concern.

Perhaps the problem can be solved if we try our best to #recyclebetter, as the current Singaporean campaign urges? Or is recycling merely a “fig leaf on consumerism” as Jane Muncke, Director of Zurich's Food Packaging Forum puts it?

Maybe we should just tidy up a bit more? When I was a kid, my father would take me for an annual volunteer clean-up of the coast near our California home. Ending the day with sore muscles and a sack full of bullet casings (from a nearby shooting range), cigarette butts, condoms, deodorant rollers, and crumbling chunks of styrofoam was deeply satisfying to me, as tangible evidence of my personal concern and participation. Last year, I chaperoned my daughter’s preschool class on a similar clean-up outing to Singapore’s East Coast Park. This time, I felt rather less contented, overwhelmed by the seeming futility of our attempts, observing casual littering by park users and the floating trash ready to wash ashore as soon as we’d cleared our patch of beach.

As it happens, in about the same timespan as that between my leaving university and becoming a mother, the global volume of plastic production doubled. The same report that documents this leap estimates that global industries have produced 8,300 million metric tons of plastic since 1950. 6,400 million metric tons of this plastic—that’s roughly 100 times the weight of the concrete used to build the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest manmade structure—have become waste, nearly 80% of which sits in landfills or our natural environment. Less than 10% has been recycled, while the remainder has been incinerated (as has until recently been standard practice in Singapore).

In Singapore itself, plastic waste per capita has increased nearly 20 percent over the last 15 years. Looking at this country’s plastic bag usage alone, about 2,640 bags are thrown away every three seconds.

Projecting forward current production and pollution trends, another report predicts by 2050 our oceans could contain more plastics than fish (by weight), while the plastics industry itself could consume 15% of our annual carbon budget, and 20% of global oil production.

While our plastic pollution crisis is so overwhelmingly large, it is also mind-twistingly small. Here I mean small in the sense probed by Goh’s photographs: the scale of the microplastics, and now nano-plastics, whose presence has been documented in nearly every corner of our terrestrial and aquatic habitats, and which are now entering our food chain, with unknown, but potentially toxic effects.

The proximity of Goh’s plastic-strewn Punggol beach to a seafood restaurant seems apt. We study the food chain and hydrological cycles as concepts in school, but when most of us enter the “real” world we conveniently forget the practical implications of our systemic connections with the rest of nature.

Understanding the interconnected nature of plastic pollution’s causes and effects is a kind of reawakening. It destabilises the narrative that sees human culture as separate from the natural environment. That story of separation has been a necessary psychological cover for the exploitation of living systems that underpins nearly every aspect of our current economic and political order. Once we remember that ecocide is suicide, will we continue it?

Have we trashed Earth beyond habitability? No problem, we’ll just migrate to Mars, as deckhands or stowaways on a tech oligarch’s spaceship. But wait, turns out we’ve already trashed outer space too. Parts of broken satellites and rockets currently amount to over 8 million kilos of space waste. Rather like ocean plastics, the larger bits of space waste are fragmenting into smaller and smaller pieces, which interfere with digital communications and might even hinder future spacecraft launches.

So let’s turn our eyes back to our damaged and depleted, yet still living and magnificent planet.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle, refuse”? Yes of course, let’s do that. But politely declining plastic straws and rinsing our Coke bottles is simply not enough. Also—and in my view, more importantly—we must act not just as individual consumers but collectively, as concerned citizens and social beings.

With this in mind, let me leave you with an alternative “4 Rs” to consider:

Rebel: Let us raise our voices together, unashamed to share our grief, rage, and disgust at the devastation that our overconsumption-based society has unleashed all around us, clogging our commons and poisoning our sources of sustenance. Let’s insist on better, for ourselves, and for the complex living systems upon which our survival depends.

Root: Let us ground the solutions to our plastic pollution crisis in the lived history and culture of Singapore and its region*. What local wisdom and practices, from karung guni men, to metal tiffins, to banana leaf wrappers and beyond, might be usefully revisited for contemporary use? How might technological and behavioural innovations ground themselves in Singaporeans’ particular resources and values?

Relate: Let us decipher and then communicate the underlying systems that perpetuate this global crisis. Let’s understand for example, who benefits from the otherwise dangerous proliferation of plastics, and how they exert influence on policies and regulations. Let’s study why some national and local governments have taken action to solve the plastic pollution crisis more swiftly than others, and what successful changes early actors have made. Let’s explore how our plastic pollution crisis intersects with other economic, environmental and social systems.

And finally, Regenerate: Let us draw inspiration from the natural world to craft materials and manufacturing cycles that are truly waste-free. Let’s design, build, and inhabit systems that proactively repair past damage, clean up our rubbish, and co-create the conditions for our living world to flourish. It will be a beautiful sight.

These all work together support a vast diversification of plant life that require different environments to flourish that is within the winter gardens. Specifically in the tropical house where the most care is needed.

What is a Winter Garden?

Winter Gardens originated as elegant glass conservatories attached to the palaces of European nobility, built in the 17th to 19th centuries. They were places to cultivate exotic plants as well as useful living spaces. The first public Winter Garden was gardener and MP Sir Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London. It was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and featured 92,000 m2 of exhibition space plus the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building. After the Great Exhibition, the Crystal Palace was moved to Penge Common in South London where it stayed until it burned down in 1936.

History of the Site!

The Winter Garden at the Auckland Domain is a treasure of great historic interest. It was designed in the early 1900s in the style of the famous English partnership of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jeckyll and opened in 1913. It is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category I historic place. Rare and spectacular plants in an ever-changing display can be seen in each of the two barrel-vaulted Victorian style glass houses which face out on to an extensive court yard and sunken pool. The marble statues in the courtyard between the glass houses were added in the 1920s and 30s by local businessman William Elliot. One house is heated and shows off lush tropical and heat-loving plants while the other displays temperate plants changing with the seasons. Substantial pergolas link the formal design and host many showy climbers. A wide collection of New Zealand ferns growing in a sunken scoria quarry to the rear completes the Winter Garden complex. The Domain Winter Gardens were constructed following World War I. The Auckland Domain had been a public park since 1844 but was considered to be an area that was frequented by "undesirables". The Winter Gardens were considered to be part of the redevelopment of the park, providing an attraction for people in the area during the winter months. The construction was initially only the Temperate House was built of glass and brick. This was opened and presented to the people of Auckland on 12 October 1921. The courtyard, the Tropical House, and the Fernery were added later in the 1920s The Winter Gardens purpose is to show case rare and remarkable plants in an ever-changing display which can be seen in each of the two barrel-vaulted Victorian style glass houses which face out on to an extensive courtyard and sunken pool. One house is heated and shows off lush tropical and heat-loving plants while the other displays temperate plants changing with the seasons.

Within the Winter Gardens there are many species that are not native. There’s an orange flowers called Etlingera Elatior (or known as torch ginger) – an extremely rare flower from Malaysia that people cannot get in NZ. Very rare specimens in steady state conditions. This is a parallels as in the Auckland Museum they have ancient artefacts on display that are of culturally significant artefacts. These are plants that are not going to be in your typical NZ backyard as they aren’t native and need constant care.

Specifically there is a Statue of a cat on a ball – it was first going to be a bear, However, one of the decision-makers (it may have been William Gummer himself) was an anti-socialist, bears represented Russia and there for socialism so they changed it to a cat! a bit of whimsy. With his up-stretched paw he is appealing to the King of the Birds to stop the incessant war between cats and birds.

Top 5 Milestones of Living in Singapore

1. When you successfully (not sarcastically) use a local suffix (lah, leh, loh, mah, meh, etc.)

The memory is still fresh in my mind: it was late afternoon in the office when I blurted out “WHY SIA?!” (complete with whiny tone) in response to a colleague telling me something can’t be done. What followed was collective amusement, laughter, and outright praise from other colleagues for using this suffix in the right context and in my own way. If you haven’t had this victorious moment yet, pay attention and keep practicing!

2. When friends and family visit Singapore and you already know where to take them

Whether it’s their first, second, or third time in the Little Red Dot - you already have tourist itineraries ready at the back of your mind. Oh you’re looking for local food? I got you. You want Instagrammable places? I know exactly where to go. Searching for hidden gems that most Singaporeans probably don’t even know about? Ask my local friends and they’ll tell you I’ve been there.

3. When you know exactly what to order at a hawker centre

While these public food courts are most convenient, they can also be quite intimidating and overwhelming. But once you’ve reached that point of walking into a hawker centre and not scratching your head at the overhead signs of seemingly exotic food, rather knowing that you’re in the mood for char kway teow or bak kut teh - then you know you’re one step closer to getting PR status. The next test: knowing exactly what to order in coffee shops. “Kopi peng poh please!”

4. When you randomly bump into a Singaporean friend

This milestone is an indication of two things: one - you’ve started to go places that locals frequent, and two - you’ve made a significant amount of friends locally whether it’s from work, the gym, or friends of friends of friends.

5. When you go back to your home country and you actually find yourself missing life in Singapore

Singapore is home to over 2 million expats. While I’m sure most of us feel homesick on a regular basis, the moment we step out of Singapore, we often get that sinking feeling of wanting to come back again soon. Whether it’s your friends, home, job, or weekend activities - you realise that Singapore has become your second home for better or worse.

I have been living in Singapore for close to 3 years. While this is a relatively short amount of time, I believe to have adjusted quite well to local life. What are your uniquely local milestones as an expat? Let me know lah!
