"Hi guys! Welcome back to another video. For those who don't know me, I'm y/n, and I just really like to vlog." y/n started off her intro. She was in her living room, sitting on her couch with a bag right next to her.

"Today we'll be going to the beach! Or well Chris and I. Currently waiting for his to come pick me up so we can go to the train station. Were going to Brighton Beach!" she continued explaining, obviously very excited. She fell inlove with the water since she was very little, only a few years old, and since then summer has always been her favourite season. And besides, she'd also be going with one of her favourite people to her favourite place, so It's a win-win in her books.

For the next few minutes, she continued talking to the camera and showing what she'll be bringing to the trip before she got a text from Chris that he was outside. Stopping the reccording, she took her stuff and left her flat, walking to the lobby and then out infront of the building where a car with one ChrisMD was waiting for her.

"Why hello there." she greeted him with a smile as she entered the car, sitting in the passenger seat and putting her bag on the floor.

The two started chatting as Chris drove, with y/n getting a short shot of the scenery through the window between their convos. Soon enough they were at the station, together going to check when their train should be arriving.

"Y'know, if you'd just driven us there it would've been much easier." y/n said, pointing the camera at Chris. "Oi, you're the one who wanted to go via train in the first place."

"Liar." she giggled, pointing the camera at herself.

Within the hour they were on the train on their way to Brighton. Y/n reccorded a short segment where they taste tested some train snacks before stopping, instead just chatting with Chris some more. At one point they just chilled together in silence whilst sharring airpods and lisening to music. 10/10 expiriance if you were to ask her.

Around an hour or so later they were in Brighton, and withing an hour & half at their designated beach for today. There were people, obviously as it was June already, but thankfully not overcrowded. The benefit of school still not ending.

They got comfortable, and soon enough their day officially started. Durring their trip, y/n filmed bits here and there, the funny and intresting moments not just for her audiance but for herself too. To remember.

When the sun started to set, they headed to a small resturant to eat and get a alcoholic drink or two in their system. It felt.. odly domestic. Romantic, dare she say.. Which felt odd to y/n to say the least. She loved Chris, absolutely. But never did she think it was in any other way than platonic. Choosing to ignore those thoughts, she just took the piss out on Chris and decided to unpack that can of worms when she was home alone. And drunk. Maybe on a call with Becky too. Or with Becky irl. Both were good options.

Around 8ish they packed up their stuff and made their way to the train station as their train was at 21:15. Getting on the train, the two continued to bicker, y/n getting another beer to drink whilst Chris drank water to sober up. He wasn't tipsy, but better safe then sorry. As they arrived in London, she and Chris filmed the outro to her video outside of the train station before going to Chris's car.

"I LIKE SHINY THINGS BUT I'D MARY YOU WITH PAPER RINGS, UH HUH, THAT'S RIGHT, DARLING, YOU'RE THE ONE I WANT!"

On their way back they had a miny kareoke sesh which y/n also reccorded for memories. Whilst screaming her heart out at 10pm, she was blissfully unaware of the look Chris was giving her when he got the chance. As the car came to a halt infront of her apartment building, y/n turrned to Chris to bid him goodnight.

"Text me when you get home?" she said, though it did sound like a question. "You just want an excuse to hear from me again, huh?" Chris shot back, a smirk on his face. "God shut up." y/n said, rolling her eyes before putting her hand on his cheek to turn his head away so she'd give him a kiss on the cheek. "Night Chris." was the last thing she said before getting out the car and closing the door behind her. If Chris stayed shocked and didn't leave for the next 5 minutes even as she entered her apartment building, well that was no ones buissness but his.

"Were you serious about the kiss?" Chris asked as he looked at y/n. The two of them were in the bathroom, both sitting in the tub as they talked, glasses of wine surrounding them. "Well-," she started, before cutting herself off by hickuping, "if you want it, yes." she said, before looking at him.

"I don't want it to be a drunken mistake though.." he replied with a frown. "I don't want that either." she replied, leaning her head against his shoulder whilst still looking at him. After having a looooooooooooong and deep chat with Becky that included too much alcohol, she came to the conclusion that she deffenitly liked Chris. Hey there I hope you are doing fine. I find it so ironic that hellers try to claim J2/wincest shippers/bibro are "ugly" when the majority of them are unwashed, obese, blue-haired hideous creatures. You can practically smell their stench through the screen. 

Also, how hellers try to pair off Sam with anybody to keep him out of their imaginary ship is really hilarious. I am not even a shipper but it's clear as day that hellers see Sam as a romantic rival. They see the appeal of wincest, it is a superior pairing with every romantic trope out there with a Titanic-like epic ending. They are so insecure and have zero faith in their ship because deep down they want Dean's love for Sam for that dusty creep. 

They know Dean's love for Sam is not normal and they refuse to see Dean as a straight man, so that obsessive love can only be incestuous. The show, especially Kripke and Jensen, didn't do them any favor either. The brothers were written romantically without crossing the line and Mr. Ackles channeled his inner crush on Jared in his acting. Of course J2's insane chemistry as well. That's why the finale completely shortcut hellers brains and their worst nightmare became true and "wincest won". Meanwhile, wincest shippers or Bibros don't even think about Castiel or their dry ship because they are very secure with their ship and the platonic canon brothers' relationship. Castiel is not a threat to S/D shippers contrary to D/C shippers for Sam.

For the rest I pretty much agree with you. For them Sam is such a big threat/obstacle for their ship that he needs to be erased from the narrative. They know that Sam is Dean's everything (and vice versa) and the brothers would burn the whole universe down to save eo. They know that to save Sam, Dean would kill Asstiel without blinking. That's why they hate Sam so much. They envy the brother's codepency and wanna replace Sam with (C)asshole. They extend said hate to Jared bc they cannot stand the love the two leads have for eo and how deeply their friendship goes. Again - they want Mishit to be what Jared is to Jensen.

some days were just rough. where every little thing went wrong, and by the end of the day it was all too difficult to not just curl up and cry.

keeping your composure around jing yuan easily proved difficult. it felt like the man just knew, his brow slightly furrowed in concern as he asked you if you were okay for the nth time.

it was especially hard in such a fuzzy headspace, where everything was so much more of a big deal. his hands immediately cradled your face as tears began to fall, his thumb wiping them away as fast as they came. “it’s been a day, hasn’t it, sweetling?” he crooned, frowning. “i think it’s time to rest, little one. maybe sleep.”

his words did little to help, how comforting they were — your emotions were simply all too big and you simply weren’t in the right headspace at all to handle them, sobbing and batting at his chest weakly.

he sighed to himself, scritching your scalp, as if you had two ears on either side of his hand. “let us get you something warm to drink,” he murmured, “and then let’s get you settled.” he was okay with letting you fuss for a bit, though — it was much better than you holding them all in. you deserved to be a little whiny, clawing at his shirt and pawing his cheek for more affection.

you sniffled into his shoulder, his arm around your torso and a hand on your bottom to keep you steady in his arms, letting you soak up any warmth and comfort you desired.

hi @briefspotoflight ! i'm replying in a seperate post, but it's also kind of long so i'm putting it under a readmore. again for everyone else: spoiler warning for AA5/AA6

@briefspotoflight (in response to this post): I agree with a lot of this, and even though I still love AA, I really haven’t been as interested in the last couple of games. Partly because, like you said, the tone of series has definitely changed, and has become very heavy handed in how they write the characters especially the villains. The Phantom’s plan is very nonsensical (ie why did he need to frame Athena when he could’ve just let Starbuck take the fall? Why did he present the winning evidence himself?) and because he’s “just a spooky, faceless spy” his motivations for was he does are just hand waved as “he’s just evil lol”, and Queen Gar’ran is the weakest villain in the series yet. She’s not clever, she’s not funny, she has no sympathetic or interesting motives for her crimes, and only exists to show that a country that executes lawyers is bad…yeah. It’s also been pretty disappointing that, after AJAA, the series the games haven’t really been coherent narrative anymore. (ie defeating Von Karma doesn’t magically make everything better, it only just begins the set up for Edgeworth’s character development, and introducing Franziska into the story) Every game, from AA1 -AAAJ, followed up on plot points set up in the previous game. However nothing in DD followed up on anything from AJ, and nothing from SoJ followed up on anything from DD. I really wish that, rather than make up unnecessary backstories for the main characters, we had felt some consequences from important events, like what was the Gavin family’s background? (Was there a deeper meaning to Kristoph’s actions?) The fallout from The Phantom impersonating Fulbright (like a new character he was close to, needing Athena to help deal with his death?). Ffs the writers are so scared to go back to old plot points, that they haven’t even told Apollo and Trucy that they’re siblings (in fact now that Athena is the “main assistant” Apollo has barely interacted with Trucy…)and their mother is still alive! Your thoughts?

i'm much in the same boat - i thought AA5 and AA6 were fun to play, but i don't like what they add to AA as an overall series, and i'm not a fan of the way they're written or many of the choices made in the writing process. AA6 even more than AA5 - i wish it was its own standalone thing instead of an actual entry in the series.

but i do *get* why those choices were made, though, and i've (mostly) made my peace with it (<- #coping). ace attorney isn't just its writing; it's also a product capcom sells, and a lot of the choices made in AA5 (and AA6) prioritize the sellability of the game over AA's overall story. phoenix comes back as a protagonist because he's the unofficial mascot of the series and the character that sells, and they went into the writing of AA5 having already decided beforehand phoenix had to return - this was always a priority to the writers well over actually following up on apollo or trucy. like you, i enjoy how AA1 - AA4 tie together and expand on one big story, but the writers aimed to make a game that could be enjoyed both by old and new fans, and they probably thought it would have lost them sales if the game only made sense following four other titles, and/or they might have worried they'd have lost sales on AA1 - 4 if it spoiled a lot of its plot twists by actually following up on things. that's mostly me theorizing about the process based on things i've read, but all that to say i don't think the choices made were strange.

and all of it leads up to what AA5 is: it's got two too many protagonists for one game, its a terrible follow-up to AA4 or apollo's character, and a lot of the story and writing is like... just kind of what it is because the writers say so (the amount of emphasis on that "dark age of the law" stuff! it's so silly and hammy, especially with how nearly every other AA game was ALSO about corruption in the law and police force. why would it matter phoenix got disbarred?!) - which is a terrible approach to writing mystery stories!

i've thought extensively about what i would change about AA5 or the direction of the series if i could rewrite it... that could be a whole essay on its own though, ha ha. but the short version is that i think AA5 should have been an actual apollo game, and i think the main story of DD could have been saved for an eventual AA6 (instead of that being SoJ). AA5 could have gotten more into apollo and trucy's family, there could have been "the big sibling reveal" as a plot device in the middle of one of the cases (though honestly i'd have been fine with them not finding out in AA5 if the game had at least been *about* them!), and athena could have been introduced as a character, without having been the protagonist - maybe in something like turnabout academy. because as much as i like her, i wish she didn't have her entire backstory and character arc crammed into DD - i think it would have been better with more breathing room. and there's many things i dislike about SoJ as an AA entry, but the main thing i dislike about it was the decision to make it take place in some distant fantasy country. i don't even want to get into it tbh LOL - but a lot of the actual cases from SoJ were pretty fun, and i would've recycled some of it into my theoretical-ideal-AA5, like for example the magical turnabout or turnabout storyteller might have still worked there.

anyway... yeah. i agree with most of that too and that's my thoughts on that. i've got a lot of thoughts on the way the phantom is written specifically too (poorly) so i like to bat around ideas about their theoretical motives or reasoning that would somehow make their actions make sense, or what would have been a good followup to what happened with their character but like... while being a fan with a little conspiracy board is fun, i wish the actual text was better so i didn't first have to come up with the character myself to then have my theories about, heh.

i think based on your thoughts, you might get a kick out of this post modmad wrote explaining their feelings about the AA5 ending - i think they put into words what i felt was frustrating about the way the phantom was written much better than i could have, and also (spoilers for the post i suppose) they thought that the phantom was going to be kristoph. because, you know, it would have made sense if AA5 actually tied back to AA4 somehow.

here is my attempt at listing some of the major events and bits of information in the franz ferdinand fandom (all from memory so it may not be the best recap but still i hope it helps 👍)

2016 nick mccarthy left the band & around that time alex made some wild vagueposts on twitter about him and it was kind of a whole thing. people like to theorise about what was happening with the band in that era of like 2013-2016 for this reason

2021 paul left the band and there were no vagueposts in fact it was all pretty chill

2005-2008 there was a beautiful thing called slacken_ties, a livejournal ff slash community which was so popular that the band themselves had heard of it and alex actually referenced it at a concert once, saying "slackening ties for the girls at slacken_ties" . also on slacken_ties there was a particular fic called uni fic which was very very popular and influential on the fandom

modern day franz slashfic's uni fic equivalent so to speak is itao aka "I'll Try Anything Once", a fic on ao3 which may have been referenced in Billy Goodbye in the line "Auf Wiedersehen Steckrübe" because in itao nick and alex have a cat called Steckrübe and like. why the hell else would they have a line that goes "goodbye turnip" (and also !!! itao was partly written by @/dear-space-cadet who is a bit of a hashtag og franz fan in terms of ppl currently active in the fandom & i recommend u look at her blog for more info on the fandoms history and also alex's interactions with fans which isn't something i personally think im qualified to speak on) (and also theyre just like a cool person generally 👍)

FFS era was a bit divisive among the fandom afaik although i wasnt there for that so idk really. but some people really didn't like it. AA had a similar response also i think but again i wasnt actually there for it soooo

everyone in the band but especially the og 4 gets very gay with it . nilex in particular, they're like . the mclennon of franz ferdinand if that makes sense. very turbulent and fascinating relationship. HOWEVER! other pairings are popular too as well as non-shippy stuff too so dont worry if youre not a nilex fan

Chiastic Structure of S2

The post preceding this is Chiastic Structure of S1.

S1 was neat, tidy and simple compared to S2.

S2 was...difficult. I have a feeling this is because of the missing minisodes. There felt like there were "holes" in places, where there was a strong scene with no corresponding pair, and yet in others there were single lines matching up.

You will also notice its quite...skewed? The hinging midpoint is right at the end of Ep4, which means the last two episodes mirror the preceding the four! So there are gaps. For example, the conversation in the pub in Ep2 doesn't match with anything specific.

One of the things I hoped it might shed some light on was the purpose of the trip to Edinburgh, which seems like a bit of a dead end. It does, in a way - I will discuss it a bit further below, along with some other parallels that didn't fit the structure.

Discussion on parallels that didn't fit the structure:

1. Crowley is given permission to destroy all of Job's possessions /  Gabriel refuses to give permission to destroy the Earth aka Armageddon II

There is a repeat emphasis on licenses, permits and authority throughout S2, so I really thought Crowley's permit to destroy of Job's possessions would have a match. It did, but it didn't fit the structure! If you look closely some of the other permits and authority lines do slot in. I'm planning some metas on these topics in the near future, as the use of language around these concepts is quite interesting, and there is some history to throw into the mix as well.

2. Crowley deceives the archangels with the help of an angel

This pair is a reference to Crowley and Aziraphale teaming up in the Job minisode to restore Job's children, and then Muriel aiding Crowley to sneak into Heaven. I'd just like to point out that Crowley could have gone to Heaven on his own - remember Eric went up with the hellfire in S1E6 - but he doesn't know where to go and get Gabriel's file, that is what he needs Muriel for.

3.  Popping up to Edinburgh

Ah, the trip to Edinburgh! Why? WHY!!! Why go all that way for ... nothing?

Guess what - it's a parallel sequence to Crowley popping up to Heaven.

I was going to write a companion piece to this but...my to do list is getting a bit long at the moment. Let me know if you want me to expand on it.

4. Ignoring messages

So this one started as "Nina gets txt messages from Lindsay, Mrs Sandwich says not to look at them," at the start of Ep3, then during the Ball Crowley is trying to lead the humans out of the bookshop and Shax confronts him with another bundle of mail. Crowley is succeeding in ignoring his messages from Hell, but Nina isn't.

5. Muriel and The Interrupted Tea Ceremony

In S2 it noticeable that everyone except Crowley needs permission to enter the bookshop, whereas in S1 they could just walk in. Originally I made a comment elsewhere that I thought this part matched with a sub-story to the Ball, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and hospitality to angels, but then I came back and had another look and saw that there was a surface match - but I'm still going to do another post about the "cupperty" because it keeps getting lost in all the noise!

6. Threats and Declarations of War

Shax makes a number of threats throughout the series, to hunt Crowley down and to declare war on Aziraphale. So when Aziraphale inadvertently declares war on Hell with the halo toss, you'd think there would be a matching pair. There is, but not with a declaration of war, just a threat to Crowley. This is probably one of the weaker pairs.

7. Mysteriosity, audacity, ferocity and dangerocity

The Marvelous Mr Fell and his Mysteriosity has a pair with Shax's speech to her fellow demons about the unprecedented audacity of the attack on the bookshop, and how their lack of numbers will be made up for with their ferocity and...dangerocity. It should have fit, but it didn't.

Omg saw your prev ask about swd and honestly same he's such a bamf. He's literally the strongest elemental god, and his dialogues are so amazing too!!

I love it when ffs portray him accurately (and I tried to achieve that in my own too). The thing about his death is actually funny because according to Mxtx, even Mxtx didn't know why it happening until it happened! Says so in the notes at the end of the book. Like, SWD took the wheel there, and honestly I love him for it.

I have an opinion on why hx had to kill swd tho.

Hx was already irked with the whole brotherly show of love while he was trying to get his revenge. Like SWD was choosing SQX again and again, right in front of his salad. HX, being the person who was originally sacrificed to SQX, have SWD two options 1- sacrifice SQX for once in your life, or 2- die by the hands of the person who choose over everything else, and swd was like "nope, you don't get your revenge. Im going to die and I'm taking my didi with me" and hx lost it there. Hx is also Xuan, and he was jello that SWD kept picking the other Xuan over him. He just couldn't have SWD choose SQX not only in life but also in death. So he separated the two siblings. Rip swd. He died because the blood was thicker than dead water.

We don’t play the game, Anon, so the EN release doesn’t really concern us; we haven’t watched book 7 yet at all.

But when we do, I’m pretty sure I will draw at least some of the characters from it! Definitely more Meleanor and definitely Sebek’s grandpa because how fucking dares he be voiced by Koyasu of all people. I kind of wanted to draw him even before that point (just like Meleanor, I couldn’t resist, to be honest lol), but didn’t really have time for him…

To the first Anon, I’m sorry for the late reply, I’ll share more thoughts in a moment. Starting with the Vil scenario!

I agree with you, second Anon! We talked about it in this reply, but very briefly.

Whether it’s Jade or Floyd who brings Vil to their house, Papa Leech is going to be super excited because he’d recognise the boy instantly. Somehow, their dinner with the Leech parents would end up looking more like a handshake event lol With Papa Leech asking a lot of questions about Eric and stuff. Even if Vil isn’t dating any of his sons, just the fact that he is their senpai would make Papa Leech super excited. Mama Leech would probably apologise for his behavior, but not in a genuine way, but just to make the situation even more awkward for Vil. Thank god Vil knows how to handle it… probably… maybe…

Vil would also make such a pretty betta merman…

But ALSO!!! If Floyd or Jade (or both) bring Idia to meet their parents, Idia would be absolutely terrified; he would be terrified either way, but the Leech parents are especially intimidating and scary. But they would love him a lot! Not only because he is the Shroud’s oldest boy (connections are important), but because of how his demeanor and his frankly exciting sparkly look. They would stare at him without blinking, showering him with attention. And they would tease him a lot, maybe even more that they would tease Riddle. Because Riddle is just an overly serious baby, but Idia? He is so visibly uncomfortable and scared; teasing him is absolutely priceless. Papa Leech would sit very close to him and look very intimidating, maybe touch his hair, ask him what he is so scared of. Ask about which one of their sons Idia likes the most (neither… please let him go…), a lot of other questions that sound like “there is no correct answer, you are screwed either way, but I am having fun, so you’ll at least survive maybe”. And then Mama Leech would tell Papa Leech not to freak out this poor boy, start stroking Idia’s hand, talk to him in a sweet motherly tone that doesn’t sound even remotely comforting. Somehow… these two are even worse than Jade and Floyd…

How do you do your mouths? they always seem to be very tricky for me, especially moving the teeth with the jaw for viseme blendshapes

Ooh! So, I have 2 separate workflows I do for mouths but they're both kinda the same workflow. Something that may help more than anything I'd write is my second youtube channel where I have some timelapses uploaded

Visemes first though before I get into modeling

for lip sync, the first thing I do is make an AA / Jaw open shape key. I set up an empty where I want the jaw rotation to be, and i set my 3D cursor there + set my transform pivot point to 3D cursor. (Knowing where to put the jaw rotation spot is kinda tricky and takes some fiddling around) Once I get the mouth where I'd like it to be, I rotate the teeth and other mouth parts as well on their own AA shape keys

After that I use AA to make the OH viseme, and I make the EE viseme. Then, I combine those three and do extra adjustments to create OO, FF, TH, CH, and PP/MM. You can do all lip sync from just those. For VRChat, I generate visemes in the CATS blender addon and then I delete any of the visemes it generated for ones I've already made (OO,FF,TH,CH,PP) and replace them with mine, because they look better than the auto generated

I usually leave a bit of a gap between the lips. If the outlines don't fill that gap entirely, I make a mesh that fills in that spot

So for the actual modeling I have 2 methods:

The first and primary way I do things is I trace out the mouth outline from my refs with verts, and adjust it to match the front and side view

and i just start extruding and filling in until I get a head mesh

(btw this is @pumpoen's fursona/ref art)

the second way i do things is i make a super rough sculpt, and I retopologize it! But I also combine the retopologized mesh with my first method for the eye area, because I've found that I can't really get a sculpt perfectly accurate to a 2D ref

DID/OSDD Glossary

These definitions are all just what I understand of them. I am not a medical professional, just a system posting stuff for systems. I'm definintely not the first person to do this, but this is mostly just for me personally, as most dictionaries/glossaries pertaining to osddid aren't the most helpful for me. These are terms that we as a system often use, and that may be good educational material for singlets. I didn't put in any controversial terms (I believe), because I'm not well educated on them. Some definitions were taken from this very helpful dictionary, make sure to check that out too as it has even more terms!

Aa

Age Regression - A coping mechanism that both singlets and systems are capable of. The brain regresses back to a younger stage of life in an attempt to relieve stress. Often involuntary.

Age Slider - Someone who's perception of their age changes. They can regress (feel younger) and/or progress (feel older).

Alter - A part of the system. Each alter is a unique individual inside of one collective body.

Amnesia - Memory loss, which can have many different causes and can be seen in many different forms. (See: Emotional Amnesia, Grayout). In DID, there's often amnesia between different alters.

Archivist - See Historian

Blurry - The experience of not knowing which alter is fronting--the current fronter not knowing who they are. This could be because they are a new alter, or they are in a depersonalized state.

Cc

Caregiver / Caretaker -  (1.) An alter who's role is to take care of other alters in the system, often older alters taking care of littles. (We personally use "caregiver" for this term so as not to be confused with the other definition). (2) An alter who's role is to take care of the body and perform tasks of self care. (We personally use "caretaker" for this definition)

Co-Consciousness / Co-Fronting - When two alters are in control of the body and interacting with the world. Oftentimes one alter is more "in front" than another, but both are actively present and in most systems are capable of communicating with each other.

Consciousness - To be "there" and actively attentive the the world. In DID/OSDD, an alter can be unconscious while another is conscious, and the conscious alter is thought of as the one fronting.

Collective - Alternate term for system

Communications Manager - A term that likely only we use for one of our alters who manages communication between alters and made it possible for us to hear each other and interact more easily. See Internal Self Helper.

Cross-Gender - An alter who's gender is different from the one assigned to the body.

Dd

Depersonalization - Detatchment from oneself, described as feeling like a 3rd-Person observer of one's own life. Can also be a state of blurriness and not knowing who one is.

Derealization - When the world around someone is foggy/seemingly unreal. Experiences feel altered and warped. 

Dissociation - A mental disconnection from the world that can result in the loss of time, memory, thoughts. etc. 

Dissociative Amnesia - Memory gaps involving the inability to recall important personal information that wouldn't typically be forgotten, often due to a state of dissociation.

Dissociative Identity DIsorder (DID) - A trauma-based disorder that is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct identity states that can take control at different times and experience varying amounts of amnesia between switches. 

Dormancy - When an alter is in an inactive state, unable to front or communicate with others. Can be thought of as a nap or break, though dormancy can possibly be permanent.

Driving - Another word for fronting.

Emotional Amnesia - Inability to associate emotions with certain events, having memory of an event but having no personal emotions connected to it. Another alter may hold those emotions if they experienced the event.

Faceclaim - The way an alter percieves themself in the innerworld.

Factive - An alter who's based on a real life person, because that person carries traits that could be helpful to the system.

Fictive - An alter who's based on a fictional character, because that character carries traits that could be helpful to the system.

Fronting - When an alter is in control of the body and actively interacting with the world.

Frontlocked - When an alter feels stuck fronting, and can't seem to switch out even if they'd like to.

Fusion - When two or more alters fuse into one. Final Fusion is a newer term used to describe all alters in a system fusing into one individual to become a singlet.

Headmate - Another word for alter.

Historian - An alter who has access to all memories in detail, but they may often have emotional amnesia.

Host - An alter that fronts much more often than others and often takes care of day-to-day tasks. There can be multiple hosts in a system.

Innerworld / Headspace - Both singlets and systems can have innerworlds, but it's not guarunteed for either. The internal world is used as a place where alters are thought to be when not fronting, and where they can all interact with each other. The fronting alter can sometimes visit the headspacen through meditation or dreams. Innerworlds can be as small as a few rooms to as big as mutiple universes, it all depends on the system.

Integration - When alters reduce barriers between each other. This is overall a helpful thing for the alters and improves communication.

Internal Mapper / Scout - An alter that explores and maps out out the system's innerworld. 

Internal Self-Helper - An alter with an extensive understanding of different alters and how they work together, and other systematic knowledge. They work to maintin the stability of the system, and usually don't front.

Introject - An alter who's faceclaim, name, personality, and/or role is representative or an outside source. Not all introjects are very similar to their source, though some can be. Fictives and Factives are two kinds of introjects.

NPC - "Non-Playable Character" - a filler person in the innerworld, serving a mundane purpose. Not an actual alter.

Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD) - Dissociative disorder with multiple subtypes. Considered to be "almost DID," as it meets almost all critera to be DID.

OSDD-1a - Alters are all quite similar, often being different ages or "modes" of the same person. Amnesia is often experienced

OSDD-1b - Distinct alters that don't experience amnesia between switches (can experience emotional amnesia).

Part - Another word for alter; a member of the system.

Partial DID - Disorder that is like DID, but one alter is dominant and normally functions. Other less dominant alters may front at times, but their executive control is limited and short-lived.

Passive Influence - An unintentional effect on thoughts, emotions, or actions of an alter who is fronting from one or more alters not fronting.

Persecutor - An alter who is known to cause harm to the system and others around them. The negative behavior isn't always on purpose, and is often just the effect of the alter being hurt by trauma. 

Personality - Outdated term for alter, no longer used because of connotations leading people to incorrectly believe that alters are less than people.

Plural - Another word for multiple/to be a system.

Polyfragmanted - Commonly used to describe a system with a large number of alters (50/100+). Also used to describe systems that may have a lower stress tolerance, mass splititng, subsystems, complex internal worlds, etc.

Presenting Self - (1)The so-called "main personality" that alters attempt to act as, trying to convince others of being a singlet. (2)The alter that presents itself to the system's medical proffesional/therapist.

Protector - An alter whose role is to protect the system and each alter. There are many different kinds: Emotional, physical, internal, etc.

Pseudomemories - Basically fake memories. Things that an alter (fictive or not) can recall despite them never happening. Not system-specific, I believe, but our osdd has caused some pseudomemories so we thought it would be nice to put.

PTSD/C-PTSD - [Complex] Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing a traumatic event. They can be triggered into having flashbacks of events, and this can include physical and/or emotional reactions. DID/OSDD is often connected to this due to both being disorders that result in trauma.

Selective Mutism - A severe anxiety disorder where a person is unable to speak in certain social situations. Some alters could be selectively mute while others are not.

Singlet - Someone who is not a system, and whose personality states all merged normally. They do not share a body with any other identities, and function without alters.

Split - When the collective is facing a large overwhelming situation/trigger (stress, memories, traumatic events, dissociation, etc.) and to deal with it and function again, a new alter(s) splits off. This is involuntary. 

Subsystem - Used to describe a group of alters within a system. 

Switch - When an alter switches out with another alter, changing who is fronting.

System - A term for all of the alters collectively in one body/mind.

Therian / Nonhuman - Someone who is aware of being in a human body, but who feels connected and like an animal in every other way, and will behave like one. Alters can be animals or hybrids, and their faceclaims can reflect this. 

Trauma - A very distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual and stunts their functionability until they can recover and work through it (not get rid of, trauma can not be disposed of, only coped with).

Trauma Holder - An alter who holds memories and is attatched to trauma that may have caused a split or the initial forming of the disorder.

Trigger - (1) Anything that can set off any thoughts that can disturb a person or bring them back to some part of a traumatic experience. (2) Anything that sets off any kinds of thoughts, depending on if the trigger is positive or negative. Causes for an emotional and sometimes physiscal response from whoever is being triggered. (3) In DID/OSDD, a trigger can cause a certain alter to front, whether it be positive or negative.

Roman Household Worship

(Like Hekate blog it’s going to be a long one so jump around or read it like it is)

Note on Roman pronunciation if you’re a native English speaker this can be very easy to understand because Latin inspired English and other languages like Spanish, French, etc. This is focused on Classical Latin.

On Roman Polytheism

I do need to clarify on regarding Roman household worship. This is a specific tradition that was heavily important to the ancient Romans it was Ancestral veneration and worship to the gods. You don’t have to be traditional or Reconstructist however within reason for instance Lararia are heavily associated with Lares and Penates and Manes in my understanding and opinion do not remove especially the Lares out of this tradition or nitpick it’s extremely important to know this sacred ancestral guardians that resides in Roman polytheism. If you remove them out of the equation than the Lararium holds no value you don’t have to pray to the Lares all the time or include in every rite BUT they need to have a place on your household altar they’re household gods and guardians not just of your ancestry but also your property, wealth, fortune, etc. You can anger them. Please respect them and the ancient tradition that they pertain to. That being said you don’t have to have ancestral connection to the Romans or Italian ancestry for this household worship or Roman polytheism to work so it is open for anyone who wishes to adopt this practice. Everyone has ancestral spirits and gods that oversee their life and household not just the ancestors, the Romans weren’t afraid to syncretise or put foreign deities on their Lararia so it was a inclusive practice. There is evidence that Gauls and other people outside of ancient Italy did part take in this practice.

So I’m going to explain what the household would’ve been like, hearth worship and the Lararium, and different gods of the households along with spirituality. Then the second part is how to adapt it into a modern practice. My intention is to make this information available and more accessible, I use this practice not just because of my Italian ancestry but it’s structure in regarding ancestral worship that I personally like. Depending on how long this blog is I might divide it up into another part. If there is anything I gotten wrong or mistaken please let me know this is base on books that I have learned and how I adapted into a modern practice.

Animus

In my previous blog on Roman Spirituality that the Romans believed in Animus or Anima a very animistic perspective on the world that goes way back to their tribal roots of Latium, from what we know of the Early Latins before the republic or adoption of Greek mythology and religion is that the Latins didn’t have a creation myth of how the world came to be they simply saw that it existed and therefore the divine exists of course overtime they did adopt what the Greeks believed regarding creation myth other than the founding of Rome. Animus which came from Latin meaning that consciousness and divine spirits that lived in animals and people not just trees or rocks or water or other natural formation. Anima is a god essentially living inside a person that gives that person life but it’s not separate from the person rather you’re this spirit and that spirit is you. These spirits are caller Genius and Iuno, Genius for boys and Iuno for girls these spirits are created once a person is born. Said to live in the person’s head and act like a guardian spirit, protecting the child from harm like illnesses however when the child is young and immature so is the spirit that can’t properly protect the child so children would wear special protective amulets, Lunula (Girls) and Bulla (Boys). Girls received additional protection since Iuno creates sacred life (motherhood and child bearing) so they would wear a woolen band or Vitta around her head. Iuno and Genius were celebrated on one’s birthdays but Genius was worshipped daily but I’ll get to that later on.

The Numina

As I said before the Romans especially early Romans did not see their deities or divine beings like Etruscans or the Greeks as they be seen as humanlike representations. But they saw their gods formless and faceless and saw them in nature. Instead of Iuppiter throwing down a lighting bolt, Iuppiter was the lighting or Instead of Mars being protrayed as a strong warrior with spear in hand he was the spear, the shield, the metal that made blades of swords. These types of deities were called Numina or singular Numen which comes from Nuo or “To Nod” (The head) and Numen meant “That which is produced by nodding”. Numen is the divine presence and power it is part of them rather than separate like how Anima is to a person. Their power is to pertain order of nature in all parts, but no god or goddess can have the same Numina for instance you wouldn’t call Diana for marriage or love because it is outside of her powers and domain and if you did it be seen disrespectful and offensive to not just Diana but other goddesses like Iuno or Venus. So it’s encourage to seek other deities for aid than to depend on just one. As the Romans adopted the Greek and Etruscans way of representing the gods the Numina merged with these concepts and beliefs but still quite present in Roman polytheistic worship.

Family

In my previous blogs on Roman spirituality and Mother Vesta is that family and the hearth is one of the significant factors in Ancient Roman society not just the living but ancestral worship and veneration. The Romans believed heavily that spirits and ghosts can play a part in everyday life even fear them. The Romans believed in what the Greeks believed during the afterlife going to the underworld but believe that spirits can still be called from the other side to seek aid and to be pleased.

The average Roman Family Household was patriarchal and conservative plus they had slaves at least the elite did unfortunately it was a prominent thing in Greco-Roman society. I will include and mention slaves when it is important of course however in modern day of worship I won’t be so much because we thankfully don’t have enslaved people but they did play a role in household worship in the ancient times.

So the head of of the household was the oldest living male in the family called Paterfamilias, this male holds all the power like finances, marriages, paternal power over children also grandchildren even slaves and their children anyone even the freed slaves who lived in the household. He had absolute power in household worship as the priest and as I mention the Genius being worshipped daily in daily worship this Genius is his being venerated to bring prosperity and good fortune to the household, he also is the one that sacrifice any animal but these were very rare in household in worship. He was the one that prepared the rituals and rites and lead the rituals on the behalf of the family he did all that was needed on holidays like purifying the land during Compitalia or amending family affairs and keeping ancestors in remembrance during Parentila in February. The wife or the oldest living female of the household (Matronae) participation in the rituals in home, responsibility of providing and preparing the rituals were available like the wine container was filled, the offering plates were clean, religious education for children. But say the head male was absent and no other male in the household can be his stand in the wife would take over, if the parents were absent than the slaves if not slaves than the children. These substitutes were called Vilicus (the stand in for paterfamilias/dominus) and Villica (Stand in for Matrona). Children and slaves act as assistants and the children are able to worship the Lares in private from family worship without presence of the parents.

Gods of the Household

Penates- Guardians of the hearth but also used for interchangeable with venerated deities in the home like Minvera, Apollo, etc. Resides in the pantry where family food was stored offered at the Hearth and has a shrine in the Kitchen

Genius the active force of a being, a thing, or place, within the Paterfamilias it was seen as the life force of the family. His was honored daily while sons be honored on his birthday. It was depicted as a man veiled or head covered holding an offering dish about to pour an offering. But also honoring the Emperor’s Genius were common.

Vesta- Goddess of Hearth, Family, and home and she is the ruler of penates and embodiment of the hearth (flame) and religious fire.

Lar Familiaries - Nature gods of the land that occupied where the family lives but are guardian spirits of the ancestors and living family. They are not an ancestor but a god representing them. They watched over the family and essential of the household shrine. But there were other types of Lares like Lares Compitalia - gods that oversee crossroads. Lares Loci were protective land spirits that which the household resided in and often depicted as a snake.

Dii Manes- Spirits of the deceased ancestors upon receiving offerings they ascend from the underworld and protect and aid the family.

Dii Consentes- twelve gods/goddesses from the Roman public religion like the twelve Olympian gods in Greece where the Romans took after but with Roman names. Led by the Capitoline Traid which was Iuppiter, Iuno, and Minvera.

Dii Indigetes-these are the local/Native gods and goddesses of the place like river gods, deified heroes, plus the protective spirit of the place is represented as a snake. For instance the Tiber River the god was called Tiberius.

Dii Inferi- Gods of the underworld ruled by Dis and Proserpina. The home of the Manes and there was evil spirits called Lemures who if not appeased they would cause havoc but appease them and calm their anger during Lemuria, it was said it was angry or restless spirits of ancestors.

Dii Novensilies- these are the foreign deities adopted by the Romans. The Romans knew the importance of reverence for their native gods in their homeland so they even revered foreign deities even praying and offering to foreign deities of their enemies for victory of the Roman army. Later on these deities became popular in Roman polytheism because of them conquering and colonising Europe and Mediterranean and parts of Middle East like Isis, Mithras, Magna Mater, Bacchus, etc. Even allowing temples to be built by them.

The Household Shrine or called the Lararium or Lararia (plural)

So this is where all the rituals and rites and worship would be performed at. Lares were an essential part that it’s even named for the shrine and the Lares were integral part of the worship. The Larariums that were found to be expensive the one in the cover photo was a common design for much wealthier households, Lararia would be made from many different materials and designs, it doesn’t have to look like a mini temple or with a painted panel a simple wooden cabinet or wall shelf will do.

This is my own personal Lararium then the altar space for offerings and tools, instead of statues or paintings I cut out photographs of the deities I wish to worship. The Romans did crave statuettes for representations for their ancestors or deceased loved ones so you can also put family photographs as well. Lares I couldn’t paint them so I used a photograph from a mythology book. It’s an artist design and representations aren’t required. But there are replicas of larariums from which you can buy from that’s always in option.

Tools of Lararium

Accera- container for incense that held sacred incense for offerings, frankincense and myrrh were commonly burned resin, powdered or even the whole plant.

The Focus- a brazier where the sacred flame and used to when burning offerings.

Gutus- a vessel for wine and milk that were used as libations for the offering dish.

Lucerna- An oil lamp but a candle can work great as a substitute or you can buy a a traditional oil lamp as a replica from a seller

Patera- Offering dish usually a shallow plate for both food and libations

Salinum- a container for salt, a purification substance of which the Romans really valued. It’s associated the goddess Salus of public health. Make sure to keep the salt clean and protect from any moisture.

Statues or representations of the gods

Turibulum- incense burner that is fire safe and proof for burning hot coals just make sure it’s not like charcoal for grilling since it can become toxic.

Best to keep these tools like vessels and statues near or in a box next your altar if you’re able to. If you have your Lararium on an end table with a small room and drawer below perfect place for storage just keep in mind milk as you all know does go sour so best to just keep wine or water in storage and use the milk from the refrigerator as you are about to do the ritual. Also if you can’t burn anything but a Lucerna don’t worry an oil burner is good substitute for Turibulum, or simple incense sticks can work and the coffin box be the long ones where you store and ignite them safely. If you can’t burn anything in your home or room, as like burning food on the focus you can always bury it whenever you have the chance to.

Ritual gestures

Adoratio to perform it one must use their right hand connecting their index finger and thumb into a 👌 then kissing where the fingers meet and extending to or/and touch the altar and sacred images. As a salute greeting to the gods.

Capite Velato (Head covered): this was required for both men and women who were present and performing the rites. It was used for precaution in case ill omens to attack the person who was performing the rite and disturbing them. These would done in a specific knotted manner of the toga that would be draped over the person’s head without having to adjust it with their hands. I should mention this to me is optional since it is only for a precaution and veiling is a personal choice in my opinion but say of you want to veil, we don’t have togas except for reenactors and replicas which by all means if you want to go strictly traditional. But togas are like wearing fancy business suits and not typically worn in everyday life except special occasions. If you want to veil anything that can cover your head headscarves, bandanas, hoodies, heck even bonnets. Whatever you feel comfortable with and of course you don’t have to it’s all about intent and your personal preference.

Favete Linguis (Be silent): maintain silence throughout the rites other than saying prayers and hymns, but it’s an act of respect and humility before the spirits and gods plus it helps to focus on what you’re doing and saying.

Manu Supina/Supplicato (Hands outstretched): similar to how the Greeks did if you’re worshipping a celestial deity you place your hands upwards, if infernal or khthonic hands downward, for vows hands to the chest over the heart

“Do ut Des”

“I give so that you may give” is the word that defines Roman worship the establishment of the relationship of the gods through these actions can result in favorable outcomes. Simple as in ask them for a favor and fulfil your bargain or vice verse but if you fulfill your vow time and time again they will see you in very good in their eyes. Steps were 1. Prayer 2. Scarfice through votive (vow) offerings that always must follow a offering with a physical offering like a gift of incense, food, flowers, etc

Order of the rites:

Praeparatio (Preparations)

Prepare your offerings head of time, if you wish to ground herbs for incense make sure to do it before the rites take place, the altar is clean and purified, enough offerings for deities. Divide it in small portions if you’re planning to give to more than one.

1. Lustratio (Purification of Water)

Dip hands in water saying “May this water cast out all impurities from my substance as lead to gold.”

Place hands on head, “Purify my head” (Purga mentem)

Place hands at sides gesturing to the body “Purify my body” (Purga corpus)

Then hands on chest over the heart, “Purify my heart.” (Purga animum)

Then take a moment to focus and ground then say, “It is so!” (Ita est!”

2. Then if you wish Capite Velato cover your head with any covering that won’t fall off or needing to adjust it constantly.

3. Approach the Lararium and Perform Adoratio.

The Formula of Announcement (Praefatio)

First to Ianus of Beginnings and a household god of entryways.

Place incense on the Turibulum or an incense burner you’ve chosen.

Pray, “Ianu Pater, in offering this incense to you I pray good prayers so that you may be propitious to me, my house, and to my household.”

To Iuppiter, King of the gods

Put incense on the Turibulum or whatever is you have as a substitute

Pray “Iuppiter, in this offering this incense to you I pray good prayers so that you maybe propitious to me, my house, and to my household.”

Any God of your choice

Place incense on the Turibulum or sprinkle wine or milk on the focus

Pray to said god and them to accept this offering

Then lastly finish the rite to Mother Vesta who sends the offerings through fire. Even if you did not burn any offerings it’s good to give her praise and acknowledgment first and/or last. Make sure the lucerna is lit as Vesta is present on your altar.

Sprinkle incense in the Turibulum or any appropriate substitute

Pray towards the flame and say, “Mother Vesta, I make this offering of incense to you and pray with good prayers that you will look kindly and favorable to your children and upon us and our homes and our household.”

Blow the candle and say, “It is so!” (Ita est!)

These prayers can be personalised change the deities, make your own prayers and offerings it’s a format that which can be a helpful guide line.

Another is approching the Lararium with Adoratio and evoking your penates so again these can be specific gods like Apollo but these can be simply guardians of the hearth. Pray aloud:

Manes/Lares/Penates, blessed

By the libation of this *insert available libation*/By offering of this incense

Be benevolent and propitious to me, to my household, and to my family!

Then pour the libations and sacrifices into the fire of the Lararium (The hearth or focus) or bury the offerings or place them under a sacred tree (arbor felix)

Morning Ritual

(Preparation ritual)

(Adoratio) “be ye well Divine Penates, May you always preserve and maintain our household.”

(Anoint with oil) Be well Genius/Iuno of the Pater/Mater Familias, may you guide us all things joyous and fortunate.

(Make an offering of bread drizzled in oil or honey then pray) With this offering of bread and oil, may our family and house be blessed with health and long life

(Pour libation of wine to the Lares and pray) May this wine find favour with you venerable lares

(Adoratio while praying) I pray to the Gods that everything will be made fortunate

(Burn some incense while praying Manu Supina/arms upward) Be well immortal Gods, if I have done anything to violate this rite you kindly receive this incense in expiation to my mortal error.

(Adoratio to the altar and announce)

Approach the Lararium when ready and burn some incense and pray

(Adoratio) Hail Lar Familiaries! May you bless us with a restful sleep this night

(Adoratio) Be thou well Genius/Iuno of Pater/Mater familias may you bless us with fortuitous dreams of the coming day.

(Adoratio to the Lucerna) Be thou well Mother Vesta, may your flames always warm our home and our hearts. May all be well this night in the house of “family name”

(Then extinguished the Lucerna and cover the lamp with cloth. Then burn some incense while praying Manu Supina/hands upward) Be well ye immortal Gods, if I have done anything this day to offend you, may you kindly receive this incense in expiation of my mortal error

Note: Libations of unmixed wine to any gods EXCEPT for Ceres, Tellus, and Pales whom accept milk or honey mixed with water or milk.

Prayers and rites above are examples of what you may want to consider on how to worship the ancestors and household gods, even certain deities. There is a guideline but Lararium devotion was heavily influenced by the individual family experiences different gods, different languages, different offerings, and different procedures. So it’s not dogmatic and you don’t have to go strictly reconstruction route.

About Genius/Iuno, these were worshipped during the times of the Roman Empire who had a binary perspective of society it was a very patriarchal society. Iuno the goddess by the same name represented marriage, motherhood, childbirth, and women not bad things but it was part of a societal norm. Genius/Iuno doesn’t have to be worshipped since we know that binary is constructed, by all means you can still worship them you can see it that Genius/Iuno does change if a person is trans or non binary since Genius/Iuno is you so it changes whenever you change. But then again you don’t have to totally understand why one feel uncomfortable with it.

Speaking of Genius, it was traditional for the oldest living male to be the one who would do all the rites and rituals but we live in a society where not everyone does have an older living male, a father, brother, or even husband. You don’t need to worry about it because you be seen as a stand in for the dominus (estate owner) or the head of the household.

Other ways to honor the gods

Holding a feast for the gods, traditionally it would be during celebrations were people would idols of the gods on couches (Leti) to partake in parties and such, it was called a lectisteritum. You can hold what is now called a dumb supper which one will make a plate of food during a meal for the Lares Familiaries either at the dinner table or the shrine.

Burning just incense for the deities for health and well being at times do it for being pious, it was usually on an erected altar with inscription of deity name and the person who built it. These can be put in gardens or grottos. Frankincense, Myrrh, Juniper, Bay Laurel, and Myrtle were universal to the Arae (altar).

Votive Offerings or offering created by hand, like sculptures, tools, coins, small charms of hands or feet for healing purposes.

Also the book: Ritus Romanus Make an Offering to Your Gods by Mamur Alia and Idibus Marths. Also available for pdf format. They do go a lot more in depth in history of what Roman households were like and beliefs.

Both of these sources are used for reconstruction and what’s nice they include English and Latin prayers if you’re ever curious.
