2024 feminist movie retrospective ~ day 6

YES. ANOTHER FRENCH FILM. AM I PATRIOTIC OR WHAT 🇫🇷🥐💥🥖🐓🐓💥💥🥖🥐🇫🇷🇫🇷💥

Watched : November 17th at my city's independent theater. The showing was.... I forgor.

Today i'm gonna take my time ; because to properly talk about my thoughts on Sauvages (trad: Savages) from director Claude Barras, i first need to mention two other films. Have you heard of Kirikou et la Sorcière (trad: Kirikou and the witch)? It's a huge classic of french animation released in 1998. When i was just old enough to focus on feature length films, this was the first one i became obsessed with and asked to watch on repeat. (even tho some parts really scared me) Every classmate i had my whole life knew this film and had grown up with it as well, it's a staple for my generation. So i was shocked when years and years later i learned that Kirikou was never widely released in the US. It was distributed by a small french-american company for an African culture festival, but not without some notes on the posters to warn the parents who would want to take their kids to see the film.

Why would they need to be warned you ask? Because Kirikou is a tale that takes place in West Africa, and it contains quite a bit of nudity. None of the adult characters wear tops, including the women, and the young children are fully naked for most of the film. Even tho it is never ever sexual in nature or really even the focus of any shot, it was a BIG problem for a lot of countries when the film was released. It was also a problem here in France while it was being produced (tho to be fair a lot of that was just racism) but it didn't end up being much of a problem with the french public. The film was obviously allowed for all ages as France doesn't have rules against this kind of content, and as a kid's film it ended up being, as i said earlier, a huge classic.

I used to date a USAmerican, and talking about this film i grew up with and love was quite the cultural shock. My ex was shocked by the content of the film, and kept being shocked by different elements of other french kid classics i introduced them to. This really made me realise like few things had before just how sanitised art is in certain countries and it was a bit depressing. I'm really happy that i grew up with the things i did, and i'm really glad France is still producing content that appeals to kids without treating them like idiots. Case in point : the second movie i wanna talk about, Ma Vie de Courgette (trad: My Life as a Zucchini).

This was Claude Barras's first film, and a huge critical success when it came out. I'm not gonna dwell on it too much as this is getting too long, but it was, well, very french as well. The movie didn't show anything explicit, but it was about very dark and serious issues, and didn't shy away from any of them. Back when it came out, i read some reviews from foreign watchers online, and with the way they spoke about it, i thought "holy shit! This must be the darkest, grimmest film of the year?!" Then i watched it, and i was like "oh okay, this is just a french film lol." A lot of people from english speaking countries just aren't used to serious subjects in animated films, much less in animated films that are marketed towards all audiences. The film takes place in an orphanage and the kids talk about why they have to live here. One is the son of drug addicts, one is the daughter of an illegal immigrant who got deported, one's dad is now in jail for doing "weird and disgusting things to her that gave her nightmares", etc. It's all very serious, yet the vocabulary and presentation is very kid friendly. I don't hang out with many kids these days, but i know the film was really popular for school movie trips.

This all very much applies to today's film, Sauvages. Like Ma Vie de Courgette, it is stop-motion animated with figures, and you can really tell the team benefited from a huge budget increase. The previous one was already super well made, but this one is just stunning to look at. Every shot is full to the brim with incredible details that are all the more impressive considering this is claymation. The acting is great all around and the dialogues feel super real. The movie has no original soundtrack, but great sound design. The only musics you'll hear will be the musical selection of french classics the characters listen to.

The story takes place in Borneo and follows Kéria, a young girl who was born in an indigenous Penan community. Since her mother passed away, her father moved to the city and works in a palm oil plantation. She's now just a typical angsty tween who goes to her christian school and doesn't really remember her heritage. Her father and her rescue a baby orangutan from woodcutters who just killed its mom. Kéria gets very attached to the baby so when it runs away to follow her Penan cousin Selaï into the forest, she follow them. The rest of the film follows the two kids as they make their way through the nature and end up facing woodcutters who are trying to displace the local Penan community.

The movie's message is super well done. I expected it to be mostly about environmentalism, but turns out this is more about the protection of native communities. The film is honestly really subtle and doesn't beat you over the head with it, and it always remains very fun. The baby ape is just adorable and some of his facial expressions reminded me of Wallace and Gromit's animation. The characters feel very real and likeable, and the film has a great sense of flow. The 90 minutes honestly flew by. The movie is pretty light-hearted for most of it but it has its moments! (well, just ONE moment at the end that honestly shocked me a bit because of how unexpected it was)

As for everything i mentioned at the beginning of this post, some parts get really serious, and then there's also the nudity. We see breastfeeding, we see casual female nudity in multiple contexts and it always feel natural. Now. Why do i keep bringing this up? Well, non-sexual female nudity is super important for representation, and, i think, even more so in pieces of art made for a younger audience.

Breasts are not inherently sexual. The female chest in general is not inherently sexual. Yet we sell bikinis for girls who are literally not old enough to walk yet. We're so backwards that a woman being bare-chested in public is associated with extremist radical feminism. It's just our bodies. I think showing little things like this (because let's be clear, it IS just a little thing. You're not going to see tits in every shot.) to kids is super healthy. It's a great message for little boys and especially little girls.

In short, i recommend not only Sauvages but also the two other films i talked about today. It's entertaining, it's emotional, it's educative, it's very pretty to look at, it has a FANTASTIC ending. It's a very enjoyable watch as an adult, and i also recommend them for kids 7 and up if there's any sibling or cousin you do movie nights with.

Final rating : MONKEEEEEE/10

(I’ll be using Xmas and Christmas interchangeably)

It’s a tradition from Central Europe, especially 🇩🇪 Germany. It’s specifically a Protestant tradition. Though St Boniface used a fir tree as a symbol for Christianity after vandalizing Thor’s oak, it wasn’t a Xmas tree.

That said, pre Christians world wide did value evergreens and that didn’t end with Christianity or other religious conversations. Use of conifers synchronized by Christians and continued to be used as protection. As far as we know Actual XMas trees weren’t mentioned until 16th century in 🇱🇻 Latvia. In the Lutheran regions of Central Europe and the Baltics were they were set up in public areas like Cathedrals. The first recorded private use was in Alsace, 🇫🇷 france, then part of Germany. . 🌲

In the 18th century Xmas trees were popular in the cities/towns in the upper Rhineland then spread to the countryside. It stayed there for awhile because Protestant, and Lower Rhine was Catholic. Then Prussian officers thought the tradition was cool and spread it. By the early 19th century nobility in mainland Europe decided Xmas trees were cool and adopted them. German born Queen Charolette of Britain 🇬🇧 introduced it to the country but it didn’t become popular to the non German general public until Queen Victoria. A year after she married princess Albert, zBritsh aristocracy adopted it and it spread from there.

In the North America the trees were introduced by Hessian soldiers, mercenaries from what is now Germany who worked for the English.

Some people have a traditional time they get, set up, like Xmas tree like Advent Sunday, Christmas Eve. They may be taken down Epiphany Eve or Candlemas. My job keeps it up year around and decorates it for whatever holiday is coming up. (I’m not sure how pagans or Wiccans choose when to put up and take down their trees if they use them)

Old school decor for Xmas trees were 🍎 apples, candy canes, pastries that were shaped like ⭐️ stars, ♥️ hearts, and 🌹 flowers. Later glass baubles 🔴🟢🔵(possibly 1st made in Lauscha, Germany) and 🕯️ candles, tinsel, were added. The star on top was supposed to be the star of Bethlehem or the angel, which was supposed to be Gabriel. Now they appear to be used mostly out of habit. (At least in my family)

People in the 1800s would make trees by wrapping cotton batting around a branch.

Most Xmas trees in the US and Georgia(the country) are from tree farms.

Artificial Xmas trees were around since the 1700s, they actually predated natural Xmas trees in the US. The German Morovian Church created in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In Germany in the 19th century they were making artificial trees of feathers, this was a response to deforestation. Aluminum trees were first produced in Chicago in 1958 but most of them were originally made in Manitowac, Wisconsin. They became less popular around the time A Charlie Brown Christmas came out. Most artificial trees now are made of PVC. PVC trees use tin or barium, as a stabilizer but they used to use lead. (My family has a pvc tree we reuse every year, no idea if it’s one of the lead ones) the National Christmas Tree Association has a video game called Attack of the Mutant Artificial Christmas Trees, it’s to promote using natural trees. The world’s largest artificial Xmas tree as of 2017 was in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 at 72.1 m (236ft 6.58 in) if received a lot of criticism for not being Xmas trees-ish and a waste of money. Which is stupid, most of the criticisms are. It’s since been dismantled.

Christmas trees are not without out controversy, much like everything else. The Soviet Union tried to force Atheism throughout their empire and part of that was banning religious holidays. This included banning Xmas trees. They converted them into new-years trees eventually. Catholics didn’t really approve at first, it’s originally a Protestant tradition and the two Christian sects don’t really get along historically. So when the John Paul II had one set up in the 80s not everyone was on board.

Boston called their spruce tree a holiday tree but changed it back because a bunch people threatened to sue for som reason. I would have kept calling it that out of spite.

Chrismon tree is put in knave of churches. It’s a conifer decorated in gold and white ornaments called Christmons. The tradition was started by Lutherans but has been adopted by other Christian sects.

Hanukkah Bush is used by some North American Jewish families and may be considered kind of a joke by some. Most Rabbis discourage its use, pointing out that Xmas trees were Christian symbols and Christians had a habit of murderously persecuting Jews for some reason. Rabbis that don’t mind point out that the trees have been secularized for the most part.

Wiccans and pagans often use Yule trees when celebrating Yule/winter solstice or 12 days of Yule respectively. (I consider my tree a Yule tree)

Poland 🇵🇱 particularly Lesser Poland and Upper Silesia has the Podłaźniczka(different localities may have different names). A decorated branch or ring, usually the top of a conifer. It was hung upside down above the wigilia table. Wigilia, a traditional Christmas eve vigil dinner. 🇸🇮 Slovenia has a similar tradition.

🇬🇪 Georgia (the country) has a version of a Xmas tree called Chichilaki. They trees made of dried hazelnut and walnut branches that are shaved and put together in a conifer tree shape. They are most popular in the Guria and Samegrelo regions. They are burned on Georgian Epiphany on Jan 19. The Soviets tried to ban them.

Things you might be wondering:

1, ‘How can Walburga and Orion still be 22 and 23? That doesn’t make sense.’

It can be pretty confusing at first! The answer is: I practically made up my own rules around how time worked and in out of loops. The original source for me (the movie, I haven’t really read the books) really confused me on how they explained time out of the loop and things like that. So, I just decided that once somebody enters a loop, they automatically stop aging no matter what, whether it be out of a loop or anything like that.

In Walburga and Orion’s case, they grew up in the outside world until they were 22 and 23, when they proceeded to enter a loop their other family members made in France somewhere specifically just for anybody within their family. Eventually, they ended up pregnant with Sirius, which is when they pretty much immediately left that loop and lived in the outside world. They had him and eventually Regulus, and I like to think that they just stayed hidden in plain sight for a while until the boys had grown up a little before they moved to Bath, in England. So, Sirius and Regulus managed to age normally until the loop was made and they basically stopped aging from then on because they automatically ended up within the loop. Kind of forced on their part, but I couldn’t just refuse a little more tragedy for those two 🤷🏻‍♀️

2, ‘Aren’t Ymbrynes pretty rare? What’s the chance that there would be two Ymbrynes in the same place at once?’

They are supposed to be pretty rare, yes — but, I like to think that peculiars got more rare the more time went by, with the bad peculiars on the run as well as people starting to notice, and it being quite rare that normal families end up having peculiar children. With all that in mind, I decided that there were probably lots more Ymbrynes and other peculiars in the late 1940s/early 1950s compared to the late 1990s and further on. I couldn’t just not make Effie an Ymbryne with the knowledge that they usually are the caretakers of peculiar kids, it just seemed logical to me!!!

3, ‘How is Miss Rhiannon permanently 28 when she was born practically a century before she created the loop?’

Pretty much same thing as Walburga and Orion! I pretty much thought/decided that she would have made her first loop (being an Ymbryne and all) around the late 1870s, more specifically, 1878 — and as I mentioned before, in my mind, peculiars automatically stop aging the moment they enter any loop for the first time. With that being said, she stops aging in 1878, and creates a couple more loops around the world for peculiars until she finds other Ymbrynes to take care of them, until she eventually ends up in Bath.

Probably around the late 1940s? Some of the kids have parents (James, alongside with Sirius since Sirius does of course leave the Blacks in here as well), probably Pandora and Evan as well, Lotte and Peter too, maybe? But every other kid I’ve basically decided would have a pretty sad background and be without parents, which is why she ends up creating a home for them and eventually creating the loop to protect them as well.

4, ‘Are these all the characters?’

Very likely not! These are just the ones I’ve managed to incorporate into this world as of yet. But I will eventually add people like Snape, maybe some real villains/monsters as well? As well as other family members too, probably!!!

This will also probably not turn into anything like a fanfic unless someone else wishes to write one, because I honestly am not a writer at all 😭 I tried writing a Wolfstar oneshot months ago and still haven’t come more than halfway through, if even that. I really hate mischaracterizing in general, and I would actually hate to realize that I have in fact mischaracterized a character in any way (at least in the way I see them). So, this will not become an actual story, at least not if I’m expected to be the one to write it, lol.

This is the first song of this Eurovision season, as Eurofans had an early Christmas present when the music video for ‘Mon Amour’ dropped in November last year. And Slimane has been very busy promoting this masterpiece by performing it in many shows across France.

Seeing other people’s blogs have given me the confidence to try out posting and so I present to you: Ladies, Gentleman, other anthropoids, my hideous creation of love!

Starting of the blog tonight is a delectable little summary of what we have and then the SHIT that must (sadly) get done.

I’m thinking we’ll have the to-do lists, a little on how the days go and try to get some good photos here and there! Also if I can ever get around to it I’ll mention how my baking and cooking journey goes!

Summary: An Avengers mission in France finishes early and the team takes a couple of days to enjoy Paris. Bucky calls Quinn to join them so she takes a train from The Hague that arrives that evening. Continuing on from when they last saw each other in Washington, the couple find more magic together, realizing they have something special. Part 2 of three part story.

Warnings: Concerns about going public with their relationship, Bucky not wanting to see an attraction because of PTSD, increasing intensity of emotions, concern over where the relationship heading, Bucky feeling inadequate.

Author notes: This is new ground for Bucky, falling for this international lawyer who seems to love him just as much. I think he’s initially surprised when Quinn agrees to come to Paris on short notice. He’s surprised again when she offers to be public with their relationship, especially after the precautions they took in Washington. Her recognition of his PTSD, and the need for a safe space is meant to show that she gets him, on many levels. Bucky’s worst enemy is sometimes himself and there’s a danger he will go to a dark place, thinking he’s not worthy of Quinn. Something may happen to exacerbate that in Part 3.

Paris, October, 2024

Looking up at the board for the arrival time of the train from The Hague, Bucky tried not to get too excited at the prospect of seeing Quinn in person again. After saying goodbye in Washington, they had kept in contact with texts and the occasional phone or video call, becoming more involved in the relationship that was definitely forming. Her calm exterior, probably a benefit in Quinn’s career, was something that appealed to Bucky as she gave the impression of being measured and precise in her public persona, much like he tried to be. Her more intense side, revealed when they made love for hours that night in Washington, brought out the same qualities in Bucky, making him feel young again, like the man he was before the war. The changes in him had been noticeable to Sam who managed to get more information from his friend over this incredible woman he was definitely falling in love with.

The Avengers most recent mission saw them called in to deal with a French criminal gang who kidnapped an American diplomat’s wife, part of an effort to force him to intervene in the arrest of one their members in New York. They successfully rescued the wife and arrested the entire gang within a couple of days of arriving. Asked by the French police to stay as their guests for the weekend, Bucky called Quinn on the Friday morning and she immediately booked the earliest train she could catch to Paris, with a stopover in Rotterdam, arriving just after 10 pm.

“The train is still on time, isn’t it?” asked Sam, who had insisted on coming to Gare du Nord, wanting to meet Quinn.

“It’s still on time,” grumbled Bucky. “I don’t know why I said you could come to meet her.”

“It was either meet her now, or meet her tomorrow at breakfast, when everyone else is there,” replied his partner. “How many languages does she speak again?”

“Five, including English,” answered Bucky. “Russian, French, Spanish, and German. She’s also learning Arabic as there is a chance she may be assigned to work with a new judge.”

“What are the chances you meeting someone who can argue with you in a foreign language that you speak?” teased Sam.

“You see, this is why I didn’t want you here. We’re still working this relationship out and I don’t need any help from the peanut gallery.”

Bucky crossed his arms in front of his body, already feeling defensive. “Fair enough,” said his friend, feeling slightly guilty. “I’ll behave.”

The arrival of the train from Rotterdam was announced, and the two men drew closer to the exit from the train level. When she came up the final step and looked for Bucky he waved then strode confidently to her, looking at her with affection.

“Can I kiss you in public?” he asked.

“Yes,” she smiled, “I’m on personal time now, not on a paid work assignment. We can be public.”

Enclosing her in his arms while she wrapped her arms around his waist they kissed for what seemed like a long time to Sam. When they pulled apart Bucky murmured something to her, in Russian by the sounds of it and she placed her hand on his cheek. At that point, Sam stepped forward.

“Hey, Sam Wilson,” he said, offering her his hand.

“Captain America,” she exclaimed, taking his hand and shaking it. “A pleasure. I’m Quinn Olman. You couldn’t wait to meet me, right?”

“Not when it involves Buck,” he replied, grinning at his blushing friend. “He wasn’t kidding. You’re beautiful.”

She beamed but took Bucky’s hand, making it obvious that she was there for him. Sam offered to take her luggage and they walked outside to where a car with a driver awaited them. After settling in between the two well built men Quinn held Bucky’s hand once again, resting their joined hands on her lap.

“Where are we staying?” she asked.

“A hotel near the Latin Quarter,” replied Bucky. “The whole team is there, courtesy of the French police as thanks for helping find the diplomat’s wife quickly and taking the gang down. I thought we could stay in tonight or go dancing at one of the clubs nearby if you want.”

“I’ll consider both but let me get settled at the hotel before I decide,” said Quinn, taking a deep breath. “The Avengers must have solved the case in record time. Bucky only texted me about being in France a few days ago, then called me this morning to say you all had a couple of free days.”

“I think he was motivated to finish it up quick,” smiled Sam. “Not complaining. It’s not every day we get to enjoy the amenities after a mission.” He turned slightly to Quinn. “So, how long have you been with the International Court of Justice?”

“Since I graduated from Yale Law School 9 years ago,” she replied. “In my final year I was encouraged to apply to the Judicial Fellowship Programme, basically a ten-month internship. I really liked it and was able to apply to be part of the pool of legal researchers that are assigned to the various judges. It meant I had to learn some languages, but I already spoke French and it wasn’t too hard to pick up the others. The Court does provide instruction in foreign languages for employees.”

“I’m impressed,” said Sam.

“Good,” stated Bucky. “She’s way out of your league and mine.”

“Nonsense,” replied Quinn. “I’m a normal woman in an extraordinary job, just like you are a normal man in an extraordinary job, Sam.” He looked at Bucky with raised eyebrows, making Quinn blush. “He’s extraordinary all the way through, a diamond in the rough.”

Grinning, Bucky kissed the side of Quinn’s head, making Sam even more pleased that his friend had seemed to find the right woman to be involved with. When they pulled up to the hotel they were surprised to see a welcoming party of sorts in the lobby. Bucky grimaced at Sam who shrugged, as he had kept Bucky’s relationship secret. The other members of the Avengers, Joaquin, Peter, Yelena and Kate, stood up, approaching them. Bucky introduced them to Quinn, then left to tell the front desk that the second person sharing his room had arrived and received a key card for her. When he came back, she was engaging in an enthusiastic conversation with the four younger Avengers.

“Bucky, they want to go to a nightclub but most won’t open until 11 at the earliest,” she said. “I think that’s a little too late for me. I’ve been on the go since 5 this morning.”

“Let’s stay in,” he suggested, putting his arm around her. “You young ones can go out and party hard. Just remember we’re going sightseeing tomorrow, special access just for us but we have to be ready to eat breakfast at 9 am.”

Based on how Bucky was looking at Quinn it was obvious he needed alone time with her, and the others said their good night, heading out into the night. Sam went with them, saying he wouldn’t mind cutting loose a bit. That left the couple standing in the lobby gazing at each other until Bucky picked her bag up and carried it over to the elevator. They said nothing in the small space until they got to their floor, where Bucky opened the door to their room and let Quinn enter first.

She took in the huge bed, covered in crisp white linens; the duvet already pulled back with a single rose laid between the two king sized pillows, a bottle of champagne chilling in an ice bucket, two glass flutes on the night stand, and some chocolate bonbons on a small plate beside the rose. Turning to Bucky she reached out her arms and wrapped them around him as he lifted her up, easily holding her close.

“God, I missed you,” he whispered. “I don’t know how many times I’ve dreamed of you in my arms.”

“Probably, as often as I’ve dreamed of you,” she replied softly. “I’ve never fallen so quickly for a man as I have with you. My heart almost jumped out of my chest when you called me this morning and asked me to come here.”

“When do you have to be back?”

“Sunday night. I’ve already booked the 7:15 train. I told my boss I’m seeing you as I didn’t want it to be a surprise to him if there were any social media pictures of us from this weekend.” She looked at Bucky’s eyes as she spoke then looked at his lips, wanting to feel them on her. “As far as he’s concerned all your debts to society have been paid.”

“So, we’re going to be completely public about our relationship?” he asked.

She nodded her head slowly, then kissed him, running her hands up into his hair, as his hands found their way under her top and onto the skin of her back. Within minutes they were on the bed, the bonbons and rose quickly relocated to the nightstand, picking up from where they left off in Washington. Feverishly they pulled their clothes off, kissing intently, eager to touch and taste the other’s skin. After their first coupling, marked by a shared cry of ecstasy, they lay together under the crumpled sheets, with their legs intertwined. The soft glow of the bedside lamps enveloped them in a golden hue as they whispered quietly to each other.

“The things you make me feel ….” Quinn let her words trail off as she caressed his face.

“Are hopefully the same things that I feel,” he continued, hesitantly. “It’s all new for me as I never felt like this for anyone before.”

“Never?” She looked at him, longingly.

“You’re the first woman I’ve ever wanted to say I love you to,” he admitted, taking in her entire face with a burning intensity. “My heart is pounding right now, hoping that you ….”

“I love you, too.” She interrupted him, her eyes focused on his. “That’s why I told my boss. I don’t want to hide what we have. Mon cœur.”

“Mon trésor,” he replied, gathering her tightly into his arms, kissing her lips, face and neck, while whispering endearments to her in every language he knew, with Quinn responding in the same manner.

They made love several times again, drinking the champagne in between the episodes of passion. Feeding each other the bonbons, then relishing the kisses after that tasted of chocolate they finished the evening, now early morning, by sharing a relaxing bath together. While Quinn washed her face and applied moisturizer, Bucky made the bed, tucking the messy sheets back under the mattress and shaking out the duvet. Wearing only his boxer briefs he opened the Juliette balcony doors and looked out over the Parisian skyline, the Eiffel Tower glowing in the distance, while Notre Dame Cathedral, scheduled to open in a couple of months, was visible if he looked out past the doors to the side. He felt Quinn’s warm arms surrounding him from behind and turned slightly, bringing her under his arm. She was wearing a man’s style cotton nightshirt, that smelled faintly of lavender.

“We’re going dancing tonight,” he said quietly. “I found a jazz club nearby.”

“I have a backless dress,” she replied. “You did say we danced all night in Paris when we were in Washington.”

“I did, didn’t I?” He looked down at the play of shadow and light on her face, feeling the emotion swelling inside of him. “Je t’aime, ma beauté.”

“Je t’aime, mon beau.”

Kissing once more, Bucky closed the doors, knowing the sounds of the city would wake them well before they needed to get up, then he lifted the edge of the duvet so Quinn could get into bed before him. Sliding next to her he raised his arm so she could rest her head on his shoulder. It was one of the best sleeps he ever had.

When they joined the others in the breakfast room just before 9 am, it was obvious to the Avengers that something beautiful was happening between the couple. The little touches, and soft smiles between them were all evidence of a full-blown love affair. The almost constant tenseness previously evident in Bucky was gone, replaced by a genial manner that saw him smiling more than any of them had seen before.

As they plotted out their sightseeing plan for the day, Quinn made suggestions, having been to Paris several times, while Bucky sat back after declaring he was good with whatever the group decided. In the transport van that was provided to them along with a driver, he sat with Quinn, holding hands constantly. They made the decision to leave the art museums for another visit as they required more than a few hours to appreciate them properly. That left the major tourist spots, the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, the Catacombs, and Les Invalides. Sunday was to be spent at Versailles, returning early enough for Quinn to catch her train.

It was a whirlwind tour of the city that gave them the highlights before they were driven to their final stop, the Catacombs, as the exit from that experience brought them close to their hotel. Bucky begged off going underground, admitting it might trigger his PTSD to see all of the skulls, not to mention being in a confined underground space. Quinn spoke to the driver, then came close to Bucky, sliding her hand into his.

“There’s a great bookstore near the hotel,” she whispered. “He’ll drop us off there. We can browse the shelves then have a coffee while we wait for this bunch to finish the Catacombs. I’ve seen them before; I don’t have to see them now.”

He looked softly at her then accepted her offer and shortly after they stepped out of the van in front of Shakespeare and Company, an English language bookstore. There were a couple of people already waiting to go in, so they stood in place and waited for about ten minutes before being allowed inside. Bucky breathed deeply, enjoying the familiar smell of a bookstore, and the memories it evoked for him.

“I try to come here every time I’m in Paris,” said Quinn in a low voice. “They even have first editions here for sale.”

“Where are they?” asked Bucky and she pulled him over to the locked cabinet where several first editions were on display, each of them with a price in Euros. He pointed at a blue leather volume. “Winnie the Pooh. My mother bought me a copy when it came out. I was 8 years old and when my sister was born I would read it to her. 1500 Euros, that’s a lot.”

“It’s a first edition, in excellent condition,” noted Quinn. “It’s not for reading, just for impressing people with what’s in your bookcase.”

Bucky smiled at her, his eyes crinkling at the truth of what she said. That feeling of intense emotion hit him again and he kissed her hand.

“Thank you for bringing me here. Bookstores are kind of my safe space. Them and libraries.”

“Mine, too,” she replied, feeling the same swell of emotion as his blue eyes gazed at her.

When they left an hour later they each had a small bag of books, mostly second-hand. Leisurely, they walked back to the hotel, having a coffee and pastry in the lobby, until the others returned, full of comments about the Catacombs. Many of them were of the dark humour variety but it was obvious they were impressed with the place of rest that lay below the streets of Paris.

As promised, Bucky and Quinn dressed up for dinner at an upscale jazz club that offered dancing, him in his black-on-black suit combination, her in a dress with a plunging back line. Surprisingly, Sam asked to come with them, explaining that as fun as the night club had been the night before he needed something a little quieter and more adult in nature. As they danced, drank red wine, then brandy, and mellowed out to the jazz quintet, there was conversation between the three, some of it deep and intense. All throughout the evening, Sam noticed the depth of the relationship between the other two, as the body language alone was sensual and romantic. There was no doubt in his mind that what he was witnessing would have one of two outcomes and he desperately hoped it would be the happy one.

His hopes were just as desperate the following evening when he accompanied Bucky to the train station to see Quinn off. Feeling almost voyeuristic at their emotional goodbye he looked away, giving them privacy for such an intimate moment between the two lovers. In the drive back to the hotel he glanced several times at his friend, who was already showing signs of returning to his brooding nature. Bucky must have sensed it because he looked at Sam with an almost tortured expression.

“I want her Sam; I want her in my life forever. But how can I ask her to leave her life’s work? I can’t leave the Avengers as I have nothing else to replace it. What do I do?”

A Trip to St. Tropez🇫🇷

Activity description:

Taking 10 days to explore the city of St. Tropez in the South of France and get to know the French culture. I visited the most magnificent beaches along Cote d Azure, adjusted my tastebuds to various tasty French food and drinks, and picked up a completely new hobby along the way.

*Food

Most meals were seafood based which felt quite awesome for me as a person who has meat based diet. I have experienced how it feels to drink coffee after the meal since it is healthier for digestion and it is quite opposite to what I am used to. Preferred part of French diet culture was rose wine.😋

*Leisure activities

1) 30 minutes boat ride along the coast

Many tourist take this boat ride as a source which offers loads of information about history and sight in St. Tropez and those small details only locals could actually know.

My personal favourite was mention where princess Diana spent her last summer before her death.

2) Reading “My genius friend” written by Elena Ferante

This book was very much dynamic and perfect choice for this holiday.

3) Bocce ball night

Even though my team was new in the whole game and basically played this for the first time they managed to win and we were so proud. The feeling is close to bowling but the rules differ from region to region and it is traditional game in France.🎳
