thinking about the poll about canon vs non-canon ships that didn't define terms, and the current fandom focus on things "going canon," so i made up a scale.

this is NOT a question about whether canon matters to what you ship (or matters at all), just how to define the phrase "canon ship."

many ships start low on the scale and slow burn their way up, so vote for the point when you would have called them "canon." i agonized over the order (especially #4-6) for a day and a half, but i went with the order in which i think joe random with a nielsen ratings box and no tumblr account would notice/call something a romantic relationship.

it's funny because back in the day people used to say they couldn't/didn't ship characters of color because they were "boring" or "under developed" compared to gringitos but now that we have a slew of well developed, interesting, and prominent chars of color people just say you can't ship them because of [insert problematic bingo square] and idk man I find all that cardi b that's suspious dot gif

I was making a list of like my favourite ships, to try and figure out what the main link between them was. And well, there's the general consensus which is that they're all gay as fuck pretty much. But I think I just have a general obsession with ships where the characters are so explicitly devoted for each other that no matter what, if you read it as platonic or romantic or queerplatonic, they love each other and that is clear to anyone. They would do anything for the other and vice versa, and they protect each other and exist with each other in a way that just works. Those are the types of ships I love. They just make sense.

Which one won a “best ship” tournament? The (probably ace) robots of course

You want middle age men in love? We got two that are very popular, take your pick

The various of female side characters that were created almost exclusively to be love interests for the male leads, why not ship them together?

You want the main character shipped with a kid he used to go to school with and has only been in like two episodes? Almost universally considered better than what was almost his canon ship

You like the canon ships? Great for you, we got stuff for that too and we’ve added some much needed depth

Any flavor you want them, whether it be enemies to lovers or doomed by the narrative or canon compliant, it probably exists somewhere

And is shipping not your thing? There are more gen fics than anything else
