First Look: The Ferrari 296 Challenge

On the eve of the Finali Mondiali, which take place at the Mugello Circuit between October 24 & 30, Ferrari will present the 296 Challenge, the ninth model in the history of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli.

Due to debut in the Europe and North America series in the 2024 season, the 296 Challenge introduces a slew of new features with respect to the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo and, in certain respects, is a revolutionary design.

The new 296 Challenge is the embodiment of an innovative new philosophy that has seen far-reaching work carried out on the road car to optimise its specifications for track use. Both in terms of performance and lap consistency throughout a race, the 296 Challenge rewrites the parameters of the Prancing Horse single-make series, offering solutions that closely mirror the specifications of the 296 GT3, which made its debut this season.

Derived from the 296 GTB, the 296 Challenge ushers in substantial modifications on the power unit, aero and vehicle dynamics fronts, all aimed at guaranteeing maximum performance on the track. It is the first car in the history of the championship to be powered by a 120-degree V6: the new model sports the 2992cc twin turbo engine without the hybrid component, a choice also made for the 296 GT3. The engine unleashes 700 cv with maximum torque of 740 Nm, with the result that the 296 Challenge sets a new power record for the segment with 234 cv/l.

The 296 Challenge’s aero package delivers downforce figures unprecedented in the single-make series’ history, ensuring the maximum efficiency in all conditions. In fact, the 296 Challenge generates in excess of 870 kg of downforce at 250 km/h with the spoiler at its maximum angle of attack.

The car sees the debut of ABS EVO Track, a specific adaptation of the innovative system introduced for the first time on the 296 GTB. With the addition of new CCM-R PLUS brake discs, both braking performance and consistency are improved. New, specifically-developed Pirelli 19” tires have also made a substantial contribution to the car’s handling and performance.

It started, as all Ferrari disasters do, with someone saying “this’ll be funny” and no one stopping them.

You’d been promised a “fun, PG‑13 content shoot” for the Ferrari YouTube channel, “just a little blindfold sim challenge, nothing dramatic!”, which is why you were now standing off to the side watching Charles Leclerc sit in a full simulator rig with a black blindfold over his eyes and Carlos Sainz behind him, gripping both ends of the blindfold like reins, pulling it taut with the kind of firm, controlled tension that made your spine do something unspeakable.

“Are you ready?” Carlos asked, voice way too deep for this to be public content.

Charles shifted slightly in the seat, one hand on the wheel, the other flexing like he didn’t know what to do with it. “I guess.”

“Good.” Carlos pulled the blindfold tighter, the fabric digging into Charles’ cheeks as his head tilted back slightly. “Drive.”

You choked on your drink. Not just because of the sudden, aggressive energy. But because Carlos wasn’t just holding the blindfold, he was guiding Charles’ head with it. Subtle tugs left and right. Light pressure back and forward. Like he was puppeteering him. Like this was Formula 1 meets fucking Fifty Shades of Monza.

Charles twitched as the car sim jolted forward. “I-I can’t see.”

“That’s the point,” Carlos murmured. “Trust me.”

Oh no. Your knees genuinely buckled.

The PR guy beside you was staring at the camera feed like he’d just realised this was not going to be brand safe. Someone’s assistant had their head in their hands. The lighting guy was frozen, holding a bounce board like it might shield him from the sexual tension radiating off the rig.

Charles groaned, not intentionally sexual, but the internet wasn’t going to care. “This is so difficult-”

Carlos leaned down close behind him, mouth just beside his ear, and said softly, “Do you want me to go slower?”

You nearly passed out. Charles’ knuckles turned white on the wheel. “I don’t know what’s happening.”

Neither did anyone else.

Carlos was grinning. A little evil. A little gleeful. Fully aware of what he was doing now. You saw his fingers twitch around the blindfold, saw him pull just slightly as Charles’ head tilted again, submissive and confused and utterly ruined.

“This is very intense,” Charles muttered.

“Good.” Carlos tightened again. “Now take the next corner. Be gentle.”

You turned around and walked straight into a wall.

Later, Charles found you backstage holding a bottle of water and staring into the abyss.

“Mon amour?” he said gently, pressing a kiss to your cheek. “You okay?”

You blinked slowly. “You let Carlos dom you on camera.”

He looked confused. “What?”

“The blindfold. The voice. The hand placement. It was a full-blown erotic thriller.”

He blushed, immediately. “It wasn’t like that.”

“I have witnesses.”

“He was just guiding me!”

“HE SAID ‘DO YOU WANT ME TO GO SLOWER’ WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.”

Charles covered his face with both hands. “Oh my god.”

You leaned in, smiling. “You’re lucky I love you. And that the fans already ship you.”

He groaned. “Do not check Twitter.”

You kissed the corner of his mouth and whispered, “Too late. There’s already a fancam.”
