Playing media off my home server or online streaming is much more convenient than putting a disc in my blu-ray player, but I hate to use streaming or other perfectly legal means when I have discs. Ripping would solve that problem since making my own copy uses the legally purchased discs I already have but puts them in a format I can more readily use. Then as long as I don't share out those copies or get rid of the DVDs, I have no moral issues.
I gave it a try but it took a week to transcode one season of a show in SD. I'm going to hold off on seriously ripping my collection until I upgrade my video card so I can use it for hardware acceleration. I'll also need a Blu-ray drive to rip my Blu-rays (if you don't have one yet, get one supported by the Libredrive project), and I'll pay for a Filebot license so I can properly title the output, or just install Automatic Ripping Machine, which I think uses something other than Filebot for naming but the other thing also needs a paid license.
you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

great googly moogly, I've solved the Kodi Conundrum
Issue: Kodi has Very Specific Naming Conventions. So do I . We do not share these conventions. I refuse to bow to the machine. Solution: Symlinks
Issue: I have a remote fileserver, you cannot UNC hard symlinks Solution:Kodi does fine with soft symlinks
Issue: Symlinks in windows are very different to linux, where they’re more like shortcuts as windows has them hard coded to the kernel. Every single machine running kodi - currently two, lounge and bedroom, possibly a third with the brewery - will need its own symbolic link of every. single. file. on my file server named correct in order to scrape them and show them. My fileserver has 12tb on it. Solution: Script written that will ask for a share name in UNC, then drill down every subdirectory and replicate the whole tree symlink form on local machine in directory of choice.
Issue: Still not in kodi naming convention Solution: filebot portable, which is free. Rename symlinks to match TVDB. Original files untouched.
Issue: faults will occur if source files are moved or renamed Solution: I just wrote another friggin’ script that will go through every single symlink and subdirectory and list all that do not resolve in a txt file called broken_links.txt. Run that once a month or so and update as required and I’m dancing.
Then it’s just upkeep with new symlinks as files/folders added and double checking it scrapes ok.

Bought the Filebot license because I got the no-longer-complete series of Futurama on DVD for my birthday and figured I'd give it a go ripping it. A bit less convenient than I expected, since in order to get it to match correctly I have to name them with the season and episode number manually (if I don't it assumes the first one without a number is latest episode on TVDB and wraps around to S01E01), but it's still easier to just paste "S01E", type the number, and press tab to go edit the next episode than to do the whole "Futurama S01E07 My Three Suns" by hand. I always wanted episode titles in my filenames but it was too much work to do it myself.
#Also Handbrake continues to be painfully slow but worth it for small projects like this#the raw rip looked awful thanks to the interlacing but after the Handbrake decomb filter they look great#and of course they compress to less than a tenth the size they were raw#no way I'm using a whole gigabyte per episode for 22 minutes of SD video#I'm used to a gig per 45 minutes at 1080
