Short story time, about a reason I love doing what I do, in particular the science/naturalist aspect!
I spotted an unfamiliar ant a few weeks back (which isn't an entirely rare occurrence as I don't know ants well) here in Florida, got a few pics, moved on. After posting to iNat, it turns out it is kind of a rare one, though they couldn't be sure from my pics which of two species it was. So I went back to the site, found another, and got species confirmed: Temnothorax bradleyi, an acorn ant species which nests in pines. So that was fun on its own!
But here's the part that makes things extra rewarding for me: Finding a thing, then learning from a scientist about a related rarer thing and where to look for it, and then finding that as well. The scientist on iNaturalist who positively identified T. bradleyi gave a piece of information that helped confirm the species: T. bradleyi nests in *living* pines (where I found them), and the other similar-looking species, T. smithi, nests in *standing dead* pines.
So I had a new quest. I went searching a location in Florida which seemed like a likely habitat with many dead/burnt out pines, and found T. smithi!
There does not seem to have been any photographs of either species alive before mine, according to the scientist, so that's also cool to do!
The part where I learn about a thing by finding it, then get a whole other tiny world opened up, with creatures I've either overlooked or not encountered at all, will never get old to me. It's so damn fun, and rewarding. So many creatures to find, so many who've only had their moment in an obscure scientific paper seen by almost no one - maybe never even seen alive; now getting their own page with pictures on iNaturalist or wherever else... 🥹
It just makes me happy. That is all. ❤️
So here's Temnothorax bradleyi, which nests on living pines:
(diagnostic feature visible in the studio shot: the short rear-facing spines on the back of the thorax)

And here is Temnothorax smithi:
(the thorax spines are longer in this species, visible in the studio shots)

Ok so I talked about this in tags of a post earlier but I need to talk about it properly
So a couple weeks ago I finally pulled the trigger, I dual booted Linux Mint on my laptop
It has less of my vital files on it then my pc, but I use it more for videos and general Internet stuff, so I would know if I liked it
Installing was scary but after a bit of trouble shooting with disabling bit locker it was easy, and let me be clear, that's a windows thing, because Microsoft really really doesn't want you to have freedom over your machine.
So I booted in
And like
I literally love it so much
I knew people talked about how much better Linux is and how it speeds up literally anything it's put on over windows, but like WOW
It doesn't take 2 minutes to boot up or shut down, my CPU doesn't idle at 25% for no reason, the search for files feature doesn't take 40 minutes only to show me Internet results instead of files, its wonderful.
The default theme is (in my opinion) pretty ugly, sorry whoever made it, it's just not for me.
But that's the great thing, you can literally customize this almost however you would like.
Maybe you shouldn't trust my opinion on what looks nice because I instantly installed a theme that replicated Windows 7
But I got bored of the default colors so I literally found the files where the home bar is saved and changed them to be more "minty"
That along with some CSS color editing gave me this:
You just can't do anything like this in Windows 10/11. You can change the color on windows but if I wanted, in Mint, I could completely change everything, centered icons on the taskbar, icons left justified on the taskbar, no taskbar, make it look like windows 95, it's all yours to do with whatever you want.
There are issues, I won't lie, the biggest one that will probably haunt Linux forever is compatibility.
Simply put most developers don't make native Linux versions of their software, you are lucky if there is a Mac version.
Lots and lots of Windows software CAN work on Linux through compatibility layers like Wine and Steam's Proton, but it's not 100%
My biggest problem is FL Studio and Clip Studio, neither of these I could get working with Wine or Proton so far. I'm hoping in the future I will find a way to make this work, or transition to their free and open source alternatives, but for now I'm stuck with a win 10 pc.
The other issue I've faced is that Linux seems to have a hard time recognizing and remembering my wired headphones. Like sometimes it just works, but most of the time it fails to do so.
My solution to this until I have time to troubleshoot more is to use my stupid headphone jack to USB C dongle that I bought for my stupid phone with no headphone jack.
Luckily it works fine and the type C port on my laptop literally doesn't get used otherwise.
All in all, I'm like excited to use a computer again. I used to only be excited for the programs it allowed me to use, but for the first time in a long time, the "magic" of the PC has returned for me.
Once I save up the money, my next PC will be Linux, Windows doesn't cut it anymore for me.
Ok now I'm going to kinda just talk about Linux for a bit, unrelated to my experience because my brain has been buzzing about this topic lately.
I get why guys who run Linux are so annoying about it now, because it's me now, I love this stupid OS and everyone has to hear about it.
And chances are, you've used Linux before already!
Linux is used in a ridiculous number of places because of its open source nature.
Most servers and other cloud computing systems are running Linux, many public terminals and screens run Linux, every supercomputer in the world runs Linux, if you were in the education system for the past 13~ years you might have used ChromeOS, which is built on Linux, if you have ever used an Android device you have used Linux.
It's never going to take over Windows as the go to operating system in the home, most people don't even know they could switch, and if they don't know that there's no way they are willing to put up with some of the headaches Linux brings.
Although I've spent way more time troubleshooting Windows issues then I have Linux ones so far, so maybe Microsoft stuffing so much bloated spyware into their system is starting to cause windows to rip at the seams, idk.
When I try to explain Linux to people who literally don't understand any of this I use a car metaphor
Windows is like a hatchback SUV, you buy it from a dealer and it mostly works for everyone good enough that they don't complain.
Linux is like a project vehicle in a lot of ways, the mechanic can tune it up exactly to the specifications they want, tear a bit out and put a diffrent one in, it requires some work under the engine but once that mechanic gets it the way they want it, it's incredible.
It's not a perfect metaphor but I think it gets the idea across.
Uh IDK how to finish this post, please try Linux if you can, changed my life.
#Long post about Linux ahead don't click read more if you don't want that#Linux#Linux mint#open source#Mantis thoughts

ARCH ENEMY's twelfth studio album, "Blood Dynasty", will arrive on March 28, 2025 via Century Media Records.
ARCH ENEMY's 2024 European co-headline tour, "Rising From The North", with IN FLAMES, wrapped up on November 5 in Helsinki, Finland.
Michael stated about "Blood Dynasty": "This new album pushes the boundaries of what we've done before — it's everything you've come to expect from this band, and then some! We can't wait for you to hear it and feel the energy we've poured into every track. Welcome to the 'Blood Dynasty'!"
Next to the limited deluxe editions that feature two exclusive bonus tracks, fans can direct their attention to the limited liquid blood vinyl that is exclusively available in the band stores and limited to 666 copies.
Issued in July 2024, the "Dream Stealer" single marked ARCH ENEMY's first new music since the release of the "Deceivers" album, which came out in August 2022.
"Dream Stealer" was mixed by Jens Bogren and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios. The accompanying music video was directed and produced by Patric Ullaeus.
Four months ago, Amott told Pulp Magazine about "Dream Stealer" and ARCH ENEMY's plans for new music: "We've been staying busy for sure and are really focused on writing and recording new stuff in between the touring we're doing. I'm kind of always coming up with new musical and lyrical ideas though — I just keep going as it's what I enjoy doing anyway. Making music is a natural process, and it's pretty much a daily thing, so it can be hard to pinpoint exactly when everything was conceived. I do, however, actually remember that the initial seed for 'Dream Stealer' was written during a songwriting session I did with Daniel [Erlandsson, drums] in Los Angeles, California, two years ago, and then it's been rearranged and updated a lot till it reached its final state that you're now hearing."
Asked if it was a conscious decision to go back to the "classic ARCH ENEMY" direction and approach with "Dream Stealer", Amott said: "I've seen some seriously great feedback from the fans, and that's always very encouraging, of course. Personally, I don't know if I’d necessarily say 'Dream Stealer' is a throwback to the sound of the past, but I get what they mean — the song has the energy and speed that is very exciting and infectious. Maybe there is a hint of vintage ARCH ENEMY in there, and why not? I'm looking forward to playing it live on stage — I think it is going to be intense as hell."
ARCH ENEMY played its first concert with new guitarist Joey Concepcion on April 24, 2024 at Musinsa Garage in Seoul, South Korea. The show was part of ARCH ENEMY's 2024 Asian tour.
In December 2023, ARCH ENEMY announced that it had "amicably" parted ways with longtime guitarist Jeff Loomis.
Jeff, who was the main songwriter in his previous group, NEVERMORE, joined ARCH ENEMY in late 2014, but was not involved in the writing for the latter act's last two albums, 2017's "Will To Power" and the aforementioned "Deceivers".

This 2009 Mediterranean style estate in Wellington, Florida has over-the-top decor. 9bds, 8ba, $15.9M.
Can you believe the chandelier hanging in the porte cochere? It looks like it could hit the car. Plus, there are two ornate carved planters on the walls.
The entrance foyer. The home is listed on every real estate site, including for-sale-by-owner.
Straight ahead is the sitting room. Look at how high the pictures go up. I wonder why all the chairs are lined up around the perimeter of the room.
The kitchen cabinetry is nice. I like the darker wood and counters.
The kitchen faces the family room.
I think it's the family room. What a ceiling.
The table and chairs must be the daily dining area.
And, this is the formal dining room. Note the organ, I guess for serenading the guests.
A guest powder room. I'm disappointed in the art- a lot of it is just framed prints.
The primary bedroom is huge. It has a beautiful ceiling, there's a piano in here, and doors to the garden.
The en-suite is also huge. The tub is so high, though. It looks like the round shower is gold-leafed.
It's unusual that the other bedrooms all seen to have a bed, sofa, and dining table.
Bath #2 is just as big as the primary bath.
Look at this room- it has a bed, table & chairs, large desk, and a full kitchen. The bedrooms are like studio apartments.
This bedroom also has everything, plus a balcony. All the bedrooms have this setup. I've never seen anything like it.
What a huge chandelier on this covered patio.
Love gazebos and this home has more than just this one.
18' deep pond stocked with koi, catfish and other exotic fish and its own dock. Isn't it beautiful at night?
This home is on 5 acres, surrounded by tropical trees, including fruit trees.
The property is so big, there are roads to drive around it.
The property is certainly large enough for a pool, but I think that this is for swimming.

Week 11 (Project Update) – The Crystallizer Hack + SFX / Video Editing Almost Done!
Currently, I'm feeling incredibly thankful for discovering the duration marker workflow technique, as it has encouraged me to edit the video as I craft each sound – something I should have done for the minor project. While it can be a bit exhausting going between Davinci and FL Studio, I think this workflow is significantly streamlined since any timing issues will be detected straight away.
As I neared the completion of sound design, I was running low on creative ideas – a similar issue to the one I encountered in the minor project. I approached this dilemma by experimenting with different effect plugins. This ultimately led to the final key discovery of the Sound Toys "Crystallizer""– a granular" synth delay effect that warps/distorts incoming signals. I revisited some old, unused sounds and applied the plugin to the mixer channel; this was the closest thing to what could be referred to as a sound design hack for generating an infinite number of ideas. I recorded the output signal into Edison and then applied my previously utilised technique of stretching and reversing the samples. This laid the foundation for most of the SFXs for the drone that spawns after the golden globe shatters.

Travis Kelce speaks with Kristen Cavallari on her podcast Let's Be Honest where they talk dating. Travis says he is not interested dating someone "high maintenance" but the "initial spark is always fun" and looking for a partner "based on how kind hearted and sweet like my mother is" and they need to "have some sweetness to you" (x)
“To really dive into a relationship with somebody I feel like it’s going to take at least, I don’t know, it’s going to take some time,” Kelce said. “It’s not going to be immediate because, the stuff I’ve been through, just in my past, I feel like you really gotta know somebody to take that step and really be committed and be in full-throttle. I can’t just meet somebody and just automatically think that forever is just a day away … I think it takes quite a bit of time for somebody to really get to know somebody and really get to find that affection and love for them.” When asked if feels any sort of pressure about settling down, Kelce said he is “living my life” and is hopeful that when the time comes, everything falls into place. “I like to believe that all of that stuff will come genuine and natural and I won’t have to think about getting into that part of my life ahead of time, the stars will align, I guess,” he said.

BIG NEWS YALL
OMG OMG OMG!!!!! XD AIGHT LISTEN UP GIRLS GAYS AND SLAYS
After 20 minutes of tears and begging my parents for it, and another hour of a YouTube tutorial on how to use it, I now know how to use...
Wait for it.
FL STUDIOS!!!! 💃✨❤️😆🥳👏
For those of you who don't know what FL Studio is, it's a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) where you can make music or covers! In my case, I'm gonna use it for covers hehe
So here's the plan:
I'm gonna take 3-4 song requests from you guys (because I'm indecisive lolol)
I make karaoke tracks of those songs for myself
Wait until I can upgrade my FL Studios from the free trial
Wait some more so I can get my mic and audio interface (something that converts sound waves from mics to computers so it can process the sound waves) I'm prob gonna get this for Christmas btw so the process is gonna go into 2025 FOR SURE
Make a cover
POST IT!!
Now, you may be wondering; "What are we gonna do during those 4-5 months, Mr. Kiwi?" I'm prob gonna post some updates and sille stuff hehe :P
Anyways, requests are always welcome but I'll only take 4 AT MAXIMUM for now!!! Also, I'll only take one from each person, so you can list but it's probably gonna take abt a year until I actually make the cover (EPIC is highly recommended and appreciated).
And I'm also gonna make a list on docs abt the requests so you don't have to think if your song's been forgotten hehehhe
Just make sure you post them in the "Ask me anything" thingy and uh ye!!
Alright my girls gays and slays, I need to go to sleep it's 11-
-ur fav kiwi 🥝
EDIT: charybdis is on loop in my head and my brain won't let me go to sleep fubfrbhifebjindjksdebi

Lzzy states: "With this tour, we're inviting our fans to experience what it would be like hanging with Joe and me in our living room: picking up instruments, telling stories, chatting about songs that helped shaped us as a band and brought us to where we are today."
Joe adds: "Back when we decided to quit our day jobs and make music our full-time endeavor, Lzzy and I would play music wherever we could, and sometimes that meant playing acoustic covers in any bar or restaurant that would have us. That time really allowed us to develop our playing skills and dig into songwriting, and it really set the groundwork for what HALESTORM is today."
"Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions" 2025 tour dates:
Jan. 08 - Flint, MI - The Machine Shop Jan. 10 - Bloomington, IL - Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts Jan. 11 - Des Moines, IA - Hoyt Sherman Theatre Jan. 13 - Springfield, MO - Gillioz Theatre Jan. 14 - Little Rock, AR - The Hall Jan. 16 - Chattanooga, TN - The Signal Jan. 17 - Biloxi, MS - Hard Rock Live Jan. 19 - Pensacola, FL - Vinyl Music Hall Jan. 21 - Savannah, GA - District Live at Plant Riverside District Jan. 22 - Charleston, SC - Charleston Music Hall Jan. 24 - Springfield, MA - Aria Ballroom/MGM Springfield Jan. 25 - South Burlington, VT - Higher Ground
In a September 2024 interview with PK of Louisville, Kentucky's ALT 105.1 radio station, Lzzy spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for HALESTORM's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead" album. Lzzy said: "We've had three separate sessions in the studio with — we're making a record with [producer] Dave Cobb. And he's actually a huge closet metal fan, and so he's really excited. And so we're making this great music, but we're constantly touring. So we've had, like, three different sessions in the studio. We're probably — what? — 70, 80, maybe, percent there. We have a studio in our house and so I'm doing a lot of the finishing touches on vocals and sewing everything up, doing solos and all that. And then we get back in in December to just say, 'Okay, this is good.' And then, yeah. And then there we are. So we're excited about it. We really are."
Cobb has shared in nine Grammy wins, including four for "Best Americana Album" and three for "Best Country Album". He's also been named "Producer Of The Year" by the Country Music Awards, the Americana Music Association (twice) and the Music Row Awards, and has been a Grammy nominee in the category.
HALESTORM and I PREVAIL recently embarked on summer 2024 co-headlining tour. Produced by Live Nation, the trek kicked off on July 9 in Raleigh and ran through August 17 in Las Vegas. HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD and FIT FOR A KING served as support. The tour was also the catalyst and the creative spark for HALESTORM and I PREVAIL's collaborative track "Can U See Me In The Dark?", which was released in June.
"Back From The Dead" has tallied over 100 million streams worldwide. Rolling Stone called the title track "a biting but cathartic howler about overcoming all obstacles," and that song as well as "The Steeple" marked their fifth and sixth number ones at rock radio, respectively. Associated Press said the album "will definitely be in the running for best hard rock/metal album of the year." Their previous album, "Vicious", earned the band their second Grammy nomination, for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Uncomfortable", the band's fourth #1 at rock radio, and led Loudwire to name HALESTORM "Rock Artist Of The Decade" in 2019.
Fronted by Lzzy with Arejay, Hottinger and bass player Josh Smith, HALESTORM's music has earned multiple platinum and gold certifications from the RIAA, and the band has earned a reputation as a powerful live music force, headlining sold-out shows and topping festival bills around the world, and sharing the stage with icons including HEAVEN & HELL, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett and JUDAS PRIEST. Additionally, Lzzy was named the first female brand ambassador for Gibson and served as host of AXS TV's "A Year In Music".

Das Kapital, FL Studio's version
One more sleepless night in this wonderful yet pathetic cell… my bedroom, of course. Some Rap Songs weeps through me with its abstract instrumentals by randomblackdude and this suffering Earl, who once disturbed, then influenced me back when I was heading to school at the age of 11. My second shock after the eternal trauma of Madvillainy. That album reminded me how important it was to have YOUR OWN SOUND (which translated in french goes "SON SON" shoutsout to grandpa Godard for this one). I don’t even remember if I was making music at that time; my lyrics, still in their embryonic stage, were already scribbled down in the notes app of the first phone my mom gave me.
Little Kay was frustrated: the lyrics and the flow were there, but not the voice. Then Thebe, with his effortless voice, decided to show me it was possible (just as Danny Brown, Eazy-E, and even DOOM would later do). I could rap. I could write. I was born for this.
I should probably revisit that frustration because it led me to discover one of life’s greatest joys: composition. It was after my brother showed me a Rhythm Roulette episode (notably the ones with 9th Wonder, Mac Miller, or Oh No) that my love for hip-hop, beyond just listening to it, pushed me to dive into sound creation.
The type beat era—that’s my generation. One of the greatest pitfalls wasn’t using these templates to elevate yourself but staying stuck on the same level, the same floor, as when you started. I understand why those beatmakers are hated so much: they’re at the mercy of mediocre rappers. But is it the fault of those mediocre rappers or the mediocre producers? Probably a bit of both. That’s why I decided to step away from the life of a mere producer. I chose to keep my sounds for myself and for people I consider to be part of the same world, the same reality. I blame those FL or Ableton mascots who pressure me to not sample, to experiment but not too much, all for the sake of profit.
Maybe it’s narcissism; I’m not sure. What I do know is that the idea of erasing my own sounds, my own pain, my own sensitivity—all those hours spent tinkering with software to express my desires—just so some stranger who doesn’t know me, doesn’t respect me, can come along and destroy it all… just no.
My life breathes out through my beats the same way these drums exhale my damn troubles—the ones that make you want to die.
