They're telling themselves Tifa's "not into it" because they now realize Cloud is so in love with her that their only hope is for Tifa to reject him so Aerith can be his second choice (oh, irony). As if Nojima dedicated a portion of Tifa's part of the novel to her feelings for Cloud just for her to turn around and go "I'm not interested" when Cloud finally kisses her.
