Reading 25-ish pages of a medieval biography in French while your actual level in the language is. Like. A2. And doing it every day. Is HARD. Even with the in-built Kindle dictionary.

Buuut I think I’m getting the hang of it. Like, recognizing the meaning of some words by context, remembering others, etc.

(Thing is, medieval biographies are actually interesting to read, so I stand a greater chance of keeping it on than if I’ve been reading textbook dialogues).

(은어 - slang word)

월루 (월급 루팡) is a slang word made up of the words "월급" (salary) and "루팡" (Lupin, used in this context to refer to stealing based on the famous French novels). It literally means "salary stealing", and is used to refer to slacking off at work.

Since I can’t copy-pasta a reblog of mine about how much Duolingo’s AI SUCKS, here are the links to the resources I use for Japanese learning:

Grammar: Imabi; notebook; pens

Vocab: Anki; Yomitan (a popup dictionary that can make Anki flashcards for you)

Dictionary: Yomitan; Jisho

Handwriting: Anki; genkouyoushi paper (although any kind of gridded paper will work); pens

My personal input: Crunchyroll (costs money) with Jimaku - you’ll have to install Tampermonkey to see the imported subtitles and it’s a pain in the ass, but it’s so helpful for drilling both reading and listening skills at the same time

If you can’t afford a Crunchyroll subscription, I’ve compiled a list of free sources of Japanese input here

And of course, the amazing Discord server I’m in that recommended me these resources and helps me understand concepts I’m having a hard time with (warning: they don’t allow discussion of Duolingo or LLMs on the server)

With the Internet, you can learn most common languages for free, and that’s amazing. Don’t let Duolingo control your journey and steer you wrong! There are all sorts of great resources out there.

Korean vocabulary

나누다 - divide; split

"원래 하나였던 것을 둘 이상의 부분이나 조각이 되게 하다."

To divide something that was one into two or more parts or pieces.

나는 케이크를 열 조각으로 나누어 사람들에게 한 조각씩 주었다.

문명 (文明) - civilization

"사람의 물질적, 기술적, 사회적 생활이 발전한 상태."

An advanced state of material, technological and social life for humans.

대기 오염과 수질 오염 등의 환경 문제가 현대 문명을 위협하고 있다.

세계화 (世界化) - globalization

"세계 여러 나라를 이해하고 세계적으로 나아감. 또는 그렇게 되게 함."

The act of understanding many countries and advancing globally, or making something that way.

Tongue Twister

Not the first time we learn in Archie Comics that learning a foreign language can save lives, though the problem does come in that we don't know which foreign language to have at our ready -- Spanish or French. It is a good thing Archie could serve as a Spanish translator when he was taking Spanish and a French translator when he is taking French.

The couple panels where they are not adjusted Vernica's skirt are interesting -- trying to conceive of it is natural no difference made at that juncture.
