for day 7 of dantepallooza 2018 we have giorgio vasari's six tuscan poets, in the form of a very sweet predecessor to my flat and minimalistic styles from today... isn't that wild?
the painting is a gorgeous, if slightly awkward, very crammed composition full of personality. for many reasons, both historical and pictoral, dante is the start of the show, and still he was put in a rather forced, perfect profile position instead of favoring a more forward-facing or natural angle, like that of his compatriots. i would say this speaks of the power of the representations previous to vasari that he likely had access to, such as botticelli's and bronzino's. there is just something believable and appealing of this man in red with his laurels, his sharp eyes, gorgeous nose and hard expression, that convinces us that it Must be dante.
while there is giotto's fresco and accounts such as giovanni villani's to give us actual first-hand information regarding dante's aspect, i'd say that 200 years after the man's death, we're rather deep into the real of the made up. but it's always when there's a nugget of truth in there that the fantasy becomes more appealing.
i went with a very minimalistic approach for this little piece to contrast it with vasari's very busy canvas. i still think it's pretty cute.
