The public wants to save the planet â as long as it doesnât personally inconvenience them
âBack in July, Just Stop Oil (JSO) experienced something unusual â they found they were the ones being protested. An alternative group called Just Stop Pissing People Off attempted to block Just Stop Oil from engaging in disruptive protests and interrupted their events, saying that the climate crisis is real but that JSO is distracting and alienating people. The counter-protests tell us a great deal about Britainâs contradictory attitude to the climate crisis.
âBroadly, Brits understand that the climate crisis climate change is a major problem. 65% of us are worried about the climate crisis (versus just 28% who arenât) while the same proportion supports the governmentâs aim of reducing Britainâs net carbon emissions to zero by 2050 ... Eight in 10 back more tree planting, subsidies for energy-efficient homes and higher taxes for high-carbon companies. 62% would support a requirement for all energy production to come from renewable sources. But this enthusiasm has its limits.
âWhen asked if they would back policies that would impose limits on what they personally can do, Brits quickly turn against them. For instance, two-thirds oppose the idea of a limit on how much meat they can buy, and a majority oppose banning petrol and diesel cars ... Even though 62% of voters back the idea of requiring all energy to be renewable, just 39% want to ban new North Sea oil fields, and a mere 32% want to prohibit the sale of gas boilers ...
âThe British public is not as supportive of action on the climate crisis as many environmentalists would hope. We favour general, uncontentious ideas â net zero, tree-planting, tax rises on high-carbon companies â but when asked for our opinion on a climate policy that would directly affect us personally, we baulk. This is partly due to worries about the cost of living, but itâs also about avoiding personal inconvenience.
âJust Stop Pissing Everyone Off perfectly encapsulates the British attitude to the climate crisis: sure, itâs a problem, but not ours. As Homer Simpson once asked: âCanât someone else do it?ââ

More recently, the annual capacity from gas plants coming online has plateaued while retirements are slowly increasing. Aging plants and state clean energy goals are certainly helping that trend. But weâve also reached the point where the economics of renewables are just much better. On a levelized cost basis (a fancy term for the average cost of electricity over the generatorâs lifetime), utility-scale renewables are cheaper and those costs keep going down(..)

Monstrosity data center power plant polluting Memphis to power a nerd reich chatbot.
No, I don't want this in Pennsylvania, I don't want it in Memphis and I've never even been to Memphis, but the situation sounds terrible.
Tennessee Lookout - A billionaire, an AI supercomputer, toxic emissions and a Memphis community that did nothing wrong Memphisâs dealings with Elon Musk provide a textbook example of how the people who contribute the least to environmental harm often suffer the most from it. Ren Brabenec July 7, 2025 The facility is currently operating 33 methane-powered gas turbines to fuel its AI technology despite holding a permit for only 15. The supercomputer facility is located in a poor, predominantly Black Memphis community with historically high rates of pollution-related illness and disproportionate rates of industrial pollutants. The magnitude of the energy draw â and resulting pollution â at Colossus is, well, colossal. According to the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), the facility draws enough electricity to power approximately 100,000 homes. Those inputs are alarming, but the outputs are even worse. The facilityâs behemoth methane gas turbines increase Memphisâs smog by 30-60% as they belch planet-warming nitrogen oxides and poisonous formaldehyde around the clock, pollutants linked to respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
My letter to reps:Â
I don't want the data center power plants in our community. We already have too much pollution here. I've heard what's going on in places like Carbon County PA where they're burning tires to print financial bribe corruption currency, like Memphis where they're sickening the community with unregulated and unmitigated pollution just to run the nerd reich chatbot, and other places where houses are vibrating from the data center fans, and headlines describe residents as being driven mad. Stop the data center power plants. I don't want them here.
Please feel free to copy or repurpose for your own letters to reps.
Interview with the reporter:
How Elon Musk is Poisoning Memphis | Ren Brabenec | TMR - The Majority Report w/ Sam Seder Jul 20, 2025 Ren Brabenec joinsto talk about his piece in the Tennessee Lookout that covers Elon Muskâs unpermitted Ai data center that is causing massive environmental damage in Memphis.
Past media on the Memphis data center power plant.Â
Memphis residents erupt at hearing over Musk's xAI data center More Perfect Union Jun 11, 2025 We went to a public hearing on April 25, where residents testified that they canât breathe and are getting sicker. âWe've shown up here today because we're tired of going in and out of funeral homes... That stops now.â
We Went to the Town Elon Musk Is Poisoning More Perfect Union May 30, 2025 Elon Muskâs massive xAI data center is poisoning Memphis. It's burning enough gas to power a small city, with no permits and no pollution controls. Residents tell us they canât breathe and theyâre getting sicker.
Muskâs xAI gas turbines: no emission controls, filling Memphis air with smog - David Gerard 14 May 2025 xAIâs environmental consultant, Shannon Lynn, says âthereâs rules that say temporary sources can be in place for up to 364 days a year. They are not subject to permitting requirements.â xAI has applied for permits for the first set of turbines. But it wonât install pollution controls unless and until its permits are approved.
âMusk Is Scamming the City of Memphisâ: Meet Two Brothers Fighting Colossus, Muskâs xAI Data Center Democracy Now! Apr 25, 2025 We speak with two brothers who are fighting Elon Muskâs artificial intelligence company xAI over its massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee, used to run its chatbot Grok.
Efficiency and Abundance Lowering costs or shifting them? - Dylan Gyauch-Lewis and Revolving Door Project Apr 14, 2025 It can absolutely slow the building process and add additional costs. But the unspoken tradeoff is that we are more likely toâintentionally or unintentionallyâharm and exploit people without it. What happens without these processes can be seen in projects that skirt them; in Memphis, Elon Muskâs xAI data center went ahead and expanded on-site fossil fuel turbines without a permit, and the community is now being exposed to dangerous air pollution and carcinogenic chemicals like formaldehyde.

Climate change is currently a big problem in our world, there are many different factors of this problem. Let's get into the first one, fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels are energy sources formed from ancient organic matter such as plants and animals throughout millions of years. Some types of fossil fuels that are common include coal, oil and natural gas. The uses for fossil fuels vary from electricity generation, transportation, heating, manufacturing, ect. It is bad for the Earth for a plethora of different reasons, I will explain them and the reasons why now.
The first main reason why fossil fuels are bad for the atmosphere is because of air pollution created by burning these fossil fuels, releasing toxins into Earth's atmosphere. The second big reason as to why fossil fuels are bad for the atmosphere is because of greenhouse gas emissions, that being a major source of heat in the atmosphere as it is also a major source of methane and C02. The third reason is because of fossil fuels polluting water because of oil spills and coal mining, the fourth main reason as to why fossil fuels are bad for the atmosphere being resource depletion, as fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource.
It is also a health risk for ourselves and our animals around us to be breathing in these harsh pollutants, exposure to fossil fuels can lead to asthma, heart disease and cancer in severe cases. Not to mention how construction, mining and drilling destroys the habitats and ecosystems around it. It is extremely important to protect and provide for our natural ecosystems as much as we can, as they keep everything around us in balance. There is always an ecosystem somewhere in nature, doing hard work to keep everything you see working. But if no stable ecosystems are there to do so, then we have nothing to rely on to make everything in balance the way it was before.
Those are only to name a few harsh impacts that fossil fuels have on our environment and atmosphere, now I will get into some alternatives and solutions for these problems instead of using fossil fuels.
Let's start with electricity, we know that it is very common to use fossil fuels to conduct it. Another more environmentally safe way to generate energy would be through solar panels, getting the Suns energy instead of using an unsafe source. The next way I mentioned how society uses fossil fuels is for transportation, using cars that run with gas or diesel. A safer option for the environment that society could start investing in is electric vehicles instead that don't pollute, or using public transportation such as trains and buses to deplete the use of fossil fuels. For heating, instead of buying fossil fuels you could opt for an electric heater or solar power instead.
Those are just a few ways that your community as a whole can stop the use of fossil fuels, advancing to stop climate change. Now I'm going to go ahead here just really quickly and add a small statement coming from my own opinion, I hope you don't mind. I really like nature and the Earth, it is were I and the rest of the world come from. Why would we want to destroy something so beautiful and so necessary for our own selfish desires when some people don't even have the bare minimum. We should be focusing on bigger problems such as these ones, instead of creating more that we cannot solve. That is all I wanted to say, back to it.
The next big thing that causes climate change that I wanted to talk about today is deforestation, one of the many sad things society does to our environment. Deforestation is the clearing of trees, which is already bad enough as trees are Earth's main source of oxygen. The main causes of deforestation is logging, farming, mining and infrastructure development.
The main negative effect that deforestation has on our environment is the lack of biodiversity, as forests are home to 80â
of terrestrial species. Deforestation destroys habitats, leading to the extinction of plants and animals. Another big reason as to why it's bad is because of climate change, there is more c02 in the atmosphere with the cutting of more trees as they absorb c02. The soil will also erode and wash away without the roots of trees, reducing soil fertility and desertification. Cutting trees will also throw off the water cycle, disrupting it extremely easily. Trees release water vapor, less forest cover reduces rainfall and dries up rivers and streams. Also as I mentioned before, the increased greenhouse gas emissions. It would also be a huge loss to indigenous culture as deforestation threatens their way of life, many indigenous people depend on forests for their culture and livelihood. With less trees there would also be an increase in natural disasters, as landslides and floods become more frequent because of the lack of vegetation.
The main concept this text is telling you is to not cut down trees and start planting them, there are many better methods as to doing these things than relying on deforestation.
âYet, you all come to us young people, for hope. How dare you, you have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet, I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering, people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing, we are in the beginning of a mass extinction.â - Greta Thumberg
This is just a small post of mine, I would like everyone reading this to search up on climate change and ways to protect your environment!

Wrong story told us that climate change wasn't real, then flipped completely and told us the solution was to push through by burning even more fossil fuels, because carbon makes more plants grow, and plants eat carbon, so all we need to do is reduce that gas in the air is put heaps more of that gas in the air.
