Introduction
Picture this: you apply for a software testing job and find yourself competing with hundreds of candidates. You have experience, but what sets you apart?
Automation testing.
That’s right, companies today seek professionals who can speed up testing cycles, improve software quality, and reduce manual work. If you want to grow in IT, automation testing is no longer a "nice-to-have" skill. It's a must-have. And Selenium, the most widely used automation testing tool is your key to mastering it.
Taking a Selenium course online can boost your resume, increase your earning potential, and help you stay ahead in a competitive market. This blog will show you exactly how Selenium skills can level up your career, what to expect from an online Selenium course, and why now is the best time to start.
Section 1: Understanding Selenium and Its Market Value
What is Selenium?
Selenium is an open-source automation tool used to test web applications across different browsers and platforms. It supports multiple programming languages like Java, Python, and C#. Selenium is widely adopted because it's flexible, scalable, and integrates well with modern DevOps workflows.
Why Selenium Is in Demand
According to a 2024 report from Stack Overflow, over 65% of automation testing jobs now require Selenium experience. Major tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Facebook use Selenium in their testing pipelines.
Here are a few reasons why:
Browser compatibility: Selenium works with Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
Language support: Java, Python, Ruby, JavaScript use what you know.
Open source: Free to use with a vast developer community.
Integration: Compatible with CI/CD tools like Jenkins and testing frameworks like TestNG and JUnit.
Real-World Use Case
Consider this example: A fintech company needed to reduce manual testing time by 40%. By implementing Selenium automation, they cut release cycles from 2 weeks to 4 days saving time and cutting costs.
Section 2: How a Selenium Course Online Can Boost Your Career
The Competitive Edge
If you want to stand out in job interviews or secure promotions, having Selenium on your resume gives you a competitive edge. Employers value professionals who can bring efficiency and automation into the QA process.
Here’s what you gain from enrolling in an online Selenium course:

Which Are the Best Resume Examples for Entry-Level Jobs?
Breaking into the job market for the first time can be intimidating—especially when you're competing against candidates with more experience. But here’s the good news: a powerful, well-structured resume can tip the odds in your favor. If you're wondering which are the best resume examples for entry-level jobs, you’re in the right place.
This article explores proven resume formats, industry-specific examples, and expert tips to help you create a compelling first impression—even without years of experience.
Why Entry-Level Resumes Matter More Than You Think
Recruiters typically spend just 6–7 seconds scanning a resume (source: Indeed). That’s not a lot of time to capture attention—which is why the best resume examples focus on clarity, relevance, and impact. For entry-level candidates, that means showcasing transferable skills, education, internships, and any experience (paid or unpaid) that reflects your potential.
Top Features of the Best Entry-Level Resume Examples
Before diving into specific examples, let’s break down the common elements found in high-performing entry-level resumes:
Clean and Simple Format: ATS-friendly, easy to read, and professional.
Strong Summary Statement: A brief, impactful summary highlighting your goals and key skills.
Skills Section: Tailored to the job you’re applying for.
Relevant Coursework or Certifications: Especially important if you lack work experience.
Volunteer Work and Internships: Real-world experiences count—highlight them.
Achievements Over Responsibilities: Even academic or extracurricular accomplishments matter.
1. Best Resume Example for Recent Graduates
Target Industry: General / Multiple
Why It Works: This type of resume focuses on education, GPA, honors, coursework, and leadership roles. It’s ideal for students transitioning from academia to the workforce.
Pro Tip: Include any capstone projects or relevant classwork that reflects your industry knowledge.
2. Best Resume Example for Tech Beginners
Target Industry: IT / Software Development
Why It Works: A skills-based format showcasing programming languages, certifications (like CompTIA or AWS), and personal projects (e.g., GitHub repos) grabs attention fast.
Pro Tip: Even if your degree isn’t tech-related, highlighting bootcamp experience or tech-focused coursework can add weight.
3. Best Resume Example for Marketing & Communications
Target Industry: Advertising / PR / Content
Why It Works: Includes measurable achievements like social media growth, campaign contributions, or writing samples.
Pro Tip: Add links to a digital portfolio or blog to showcase your style and voice.
4. Best Resume Example for Healthcare Support Roles
Target Industry: Nursing, Medical Assistant, Healthcare Admin
Why It Works: Emphasizes soft skills like communication and empathy, plus certifications like CPR, BLS, or CNA licenses.
Pro Tip: Include clinical rotations or volunteering at health camps.
5. Best Resume Example for Administrative & Office Jobs
Target Industry: Business, Office Support, HR
Why It Works: Highlights skills in Microsoft Office, scheduling, data entry, and organizational abilities.
Pro Tip: If you've managed student clubs or helped organize events, include those details.
How to Choose the Right Resume Example for You
While browsing the best resume examples, it’s important to customize the template based on your career goals. Here’s a quick checklist to help guide your selection:
✅ Does it align with the job description?
✅ Is it ATS-friendly (no fancy graphics or tables)?
✅ Does it highlight your strongest attributes first?
✅ Is the language clear, action-oriented, and error-free?
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even with the best examples, many entry-level candidates fall into these traps:
❌ Using the same resume for every job
❌ Overloading with buzzwords without evidence
❌ Leaving out a summary or objective
❌ Ignoring formatting guidelines for ATS
Remember, recruiters aren’t just looking for experience—they’re looking for potential. Your resume should tell a story of what you’ve done and what you’re capable of doing.
Where to Find the Best Resume Examples
There are several trusted platforms offering free and premium resume templates, including:
Zety
Canva
Indeed
Novoresume

Choose a template that matches your industry, and edit it to reflect your unique background.

Tips for Landing Your First Entry-Level Developer Job | Resources ✨
Tumblr media
I saw a tweet by @reactive_dude on Twitter where he talked about tips for junior developers landing their first jobs and I thought I would share them here as well, it might help someone. I think these are handy, especially the projects and open-source tips. I also read through the comments and added some of the tips from there to the list. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Have an active LinkedIn account
Add as many recruiters to your LinkedIn network as you can
To add recruiters on LinkedIn: introduce yourself in 1-2 sentences, and say you're open for entry-level jobs, there is no need to overthink this step
Most recruiters will accept your network request even without reading your message
Build 1-2 strong projects where you use/build CRUD APIs - For example a real-time chat app, an app with auth where you can log in and manage recipes/notes/tasks/whatever...
If you're a front-end dev, there are a lot of free APIs available, you can make use of these and build client apps
Make it easy to check your projects and code
This means open source on GitHub and one-click access to your project (without a complicated login/registration process)
Make a huge effort to make your resume as polished and professional as possible.
Build a portfolio website
Apply to as many jobs as possible, as soon as they're listed
Don't feel bad about rejections or if you're not getting any responses
Contribute to open source/build your own projects in public daily
More than building CRUD projects, you should show off your contribution to open-source. Whether it's a small package or a utility website for a framework that they use - stuff like that stands out more than another Student Management System.
Don't shoot too high, apply with local companies
Fully remote international companies usually hire only experience developers
Network with developers who can help you get hired in their company
If possible, attend local meetups/conferences/events to network with other devs
Share your progress and projects online!

Hi Dr. Matt, I too am a college youth coming to you for advice, well actually more like concept. What does GPA actually mean, in terms of my ability to get jobs/go to grad school/etc. I grew up in a very "4.0" or bust household and while I've broken free (god that first B was freeing) I have less than 0 ability to actually add context to these numbers. Help?
Hi, anon!
So let’s start from the top and be real broad for you and other folks who might be in different circumstances:
GPA = Grade Point Average. Each institution may calculate this differently. I occasionally have to do them by hand, but why the fuck would you do that is the better question here.
GPA is usually a number between 0.00 and 4.00. Students who fall below a certain GPA at college/univ level (for many institutions in the USA, 2.0 is that number, which is a C average) go on something called Academic Probation
The reason Academic Probation is a problem is because if you are on Academic Probation for multiple semesters, you may be ‘Disqualified,’ I.e. Kicked out of your college/univ.
So in this sense, GPA functions as a way of demonstrating to the University and the people giving you Financial Aid that you are making satisfactory progress on your degree, and you are ‘worthy’ of continuing to receive subsidized education.
While that’s a shitty way of conceiving of humans and education, that’s the system we live in, and that’s essentially why it’s really important for people to be aware of their GPA.
It’s not that that number defines you or your intrinsic worth as a human, rather its that that number gives you access to other things.
Now, on that note, let’s talk about GPA in terms of social value, economic value, and social and academic mobility. It’s going to be a long conversation, so I’m putting it under the cut.
-------------
Depending on your field of career and study, average GPAs are going to vary.
Engineers, for example, go through such difficult classes that they have notoriously low GPAs. Like anything from a 2.0 to a 3.0 is solid and anything higher than like a 3.3 is considered by many in Engineering fields to be really good.
Many STEM fields are like this. Chemistry, Kinesiology, Physics, Math, Engineering, Biology, Bio-Chem, etc.
In many Social Science and Humanities fields, GPAs are less important than research and analytical abilities, writing strength, communication abilities, teamwork stuff -- transferable, “soft” skills essentially.
That being said, when you are trying to move up, academically or economically, GPA may become a factor that you start to think about--especially when you are applying to a type of specialized or graduate school (certification programs, nursing programs, teaching certificate, Masters degrees, PhDs, etc).
Many programs have GPA limits on their programs in order to thin out their application pools. Nursing programs may have a 3.0 minimum. Masters programs may ask you to have only gotten X number of Bs or Cs.
I want to emphasize here, however: GPA minimums depend on the program itself.
Prestige is one of the main driving factors behind demanding a certain GPA. Places with prestigious programs and jobs have the notoriety that brings them loads of applicants, which in turn gives them the ability to raise standards.
The top 10 schools in the US are going to be able to demand a 3.5 GPA or higher for admission.
The top firms in a city can say that you need X amount of experience in X area to be hired onto their team.
-----------------
When it comes to applying to graduate school stuff (law school, Masters programs, PhD programs), I would focus less on whether or not you have a freakishly high GPA and more on your extracurriculars, your publications, research opportunities, writing abilities, analytical skills, and the hard skills necessary for your chosen field (I.e. Knowing MatLab or Python or GIS).
The reason for that is that you don’t really choose a graduate school so much as you choose a supervisor at a graduate school.
So if you can connect with a potential supervisor and are able to demonstrate to them that you A) are an asset to their program and B) have the skills necessary to do the work, then they are often the ones who decide whether or not you get admitted.
Supervisors can often smooth over lumps and bumps when it comes to admission of graduate students because THEY will be the ones overseeing your work before the Univ/program is.
Example: When I applied to one of my schools, the potential supervisor I was working with coached me in how to structure my research statement. They also advocated for me in admissions, and I did, in fact, get into that school (even if I chose not to go). For my other choice, I worked with a different supervisor who helped me get funding to help me secure admission as well.
So in this way, it is far more important for you to impress a supervisor than to have the best GPA of all applicants.
--------------
Now for the rest of y’all who aren’t thinking about grad school or a certification program, you may be asking, “Will my GPA affect my ability to get a job in the future?”
And first off, I want to sort of break down the notion that your degree = your career. Only something like 30% of people end up working in the field they get their degree in, so that tells you already that GPA and choice of Major kind of doesn’t matter in terms of being able to make money.
But more to the point:
Generally speaking, most (like, 95% or something) jobs do NOT require you to list your GPA on your resume or any other application materials.
Some positions may ask you to demonstrate proficiency in a given area or hard skill. Some positions may ask you to provide proof that you completed your degree. But usually, this proof is given to a company AFTER you have applied and accepted an offer for the position.
Example: after I accepted my job, I was asked to submit proof of my Masters degree, because my offer was contingent on me having the credentials I said that I did.
Now, if you are fresh out of school and don’t have much experience, but you’ve got a bangin’ GPA, that may be something that you consider listing on your resume to demonstrate to employers that you are a smart cookie, simply lacking experience.
If you are a new graduate in a STEM field specifically, and you have a bangin’ GPA and are looking for work in STEM, then you may also list that on your resume.
But I want to emphasize that you don’t have to. It is your choice. And in this scenario, you would only do that if you were applying to a highly specific position where that mattered and if you felt that it would help you.
If you’re applying to anything that is not an internship or a STEM entry job (like a new engineer, a new lab assistant, etc) there is no reason for you to put your GPA on your resume. That should not affect your chances for a position.
------------
That’s probably plenty of food for thought for now. But anon, you can breathe. I got your other message and you are doing fantastically. Try to understand that the number isn’t as important as your competence and understanding in the material you are learning.
For right now, focus on building the skills. When it comes down to it, people would rather have a doctor who understands what to do to save their life than a doc who got a 4.0 in undergrad.

Mr-entj, I'm a senior in college and starting my career soon which this blog has been an abundance of valuable information. What have you seen in your experience as the biggest jobs hunting MISTAKES college students make at this phase? I would like to learn from those common mistakes if possible because I do treasure wisdom and experience. Thank you.

Job interview tips
Job hunting 101
Off the top of my head, top 3 below.
Top 3 job hunting mistakes college students make
1. They think it’s easy
This is how most students think job hunting goes (theory):
I attend college
I do relatively well and graduate with a degree
I submit some job applications to my favorite jobs
I interview
I get a job offer!
This is how job hunting actually is (reality):
I attend college
I do relatively well and graduate with a degree
I submit some job applications to my favorite jobs
I get all rejections or no responses from the jobs
I apply to more jobs
I get no responses
I apply to more jobs
I get no responses
I apply to more jobs
I get maybe 1 interview
I interview but I don’t get the job and have no idea why I didn’t get it
I start to get frustrated and lose hope
I have been unemployed for months post-graduation
I start to panic
I settle for a crap job
WTF happened?
It’s overconfidence mixed with a huge dose of naivete due to a lack of real world experience.
To avoid underestimating this process:
Understand that job hunting is a highly subjective process– it’s not an objective process. That’s why it’s so difficult, it’s like dating. A candidate can have all the qualifications and be a “perfect” fit but can still be rejected because the company didn’t “like” the person or the timing was off or the position was filled or the company knows someone internally who’s a better fit or [insert other rejection reason here]. There are many unknown variables that are invisible to the job applicant. Often times, job applications submitted via websites are rarely seen, interviews are expedited for people with specific connections to the company or skills relevant to the role, schools/majors/grades weed people out immediately, and offers are only extended if the stars align for the candidate. This is why preparation is critical to success.
Understand that job hunting is ultra competitive. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people applying for the same position and they’re just as smart and just as qualified– if not more. Often times, students think because they academically excelled at their specific university that they’re competitive against a field of graduates from other universities when they’re actually a big fish in a small pond. This is a mistake. Exercise humility, treat every position and organization with respect, don’t assume you’re a special snowflake overachiever, and always assume that you’re the underdog.
Prepare like hell. There are tons of resources on this blog and everywhere on the internet to help craft compelling resumes, make professional/industry connections, improve interview performance, and give huge advantages to people that seek them out. Be proactive.
2. They don’t leverage their network
Pop quiz. What’s the advantage of going to college if you can learn most of this stuff on the internet? Why are you paying $XX,000 thousands of dollars per year for an education if Google, free visits to the library, and discount books online can relay the same information? Why?
Answer: The main advantages of a formal education from a reputable university are that it establishes external credibility, grants an academic cohort that eventually becomes a professional network, and provides career resources.
Advantages are only advantages if you actually use them.
To leverage a network:
Attend career campus events. Colleges work around the clock to get companies to come on campus and hire their graduates– do not miss these events. Polish your resume, dust off your suit, and come with your best smile to explore opportunities and meet students.
Visit the university career center. There are people employed and paid solely for the purpose of getting you a job. Any company or alum looking to hire a graduate from your school will go through the university career center so staying close to the staff here will get you first pick.
Use the university job board. These are positions usually offered by alums in other companies that are exclusive to your school. This gives you first pick of positions that may or may not be live on other job websites.
Network with alumni. Get a professional mentor, reach out on LinkedIn, volunteer at alumni events. Alums are former students who have been in your exact position so they understand the struggle. Any alum who commits time and energy into attending an alumni event usually has school pride and wants to give back. Engage them.
Join on-campus professional groups. Professional frats, affinity groups, study groups, etc. Shared interests = shared bonds = relationship building.
3. They start too late
I’m going to repeat this over and over until people get it: the most difficult time to get a job is straight out of college when you have little to no relevant work experience that separates you from a sea of candidates. For this reason, do not procrastinate.
Remember that employers want to minimize the risk of hiring the wrong person and maximize the chance of hiring the correct person which is why college graduates have a tougher time entering the job market than experienced professionals who have projects, references, and bodies of work (empirical evidence) to vouch for their abilities. Once a college graduate accumulates years of experience this problem goes away but until then they need to be proactive in searching for opportunities while in school. It’s imperative that students start job hunting, internships, and recruiting activities before they graduate college to avoid missing critical deadlines only available to them as students.
It’s exponentially more difficult to find a job after graduation because all the desirable positions will have already been filled. One of two things tend to happen to people who don’t recruit well during college and who graduate without a job:
They’ll scramble for low-level positions they’re overqualified for that don’t require a college degree, that are lower paying, but more difficult to get because of the larger applicant pool
They’ll apply for positions for experienced professionals that they’re underqualified for because the new grad entry-level positions are already gone but they also have no substantive work experience for these experienced positions
This is a form of professional purgatory where they’re neither here nor there; a college graduate overqualified for menial jobs but also underqualified for entry-level jobs that require 1-2 years of experience. This is not a good position to be in; do not be in this position. Career procrastination and the failure to recruit properly during college will create something called career debt because bad job placement post-graduation will set a career back years especially in pursuit of leadership positions.
To get a head start on job hunting:
Have meaningful internships throughout your college career. Graduating without an internship is not a good look. It basically tells the world that you didn’t do anything outside of the classroom; no exposure to the professional world, no extra effort into researching your career, and no additional parties to vouch for your work. This means that in a crowd of graduating students, nothing differentiates you from the herd. Search online for internships, there are tons of resources for this and most companies will post internships directly on their career pages:
Indeed
Glassdoor
LinkedIn
Apple internships
Amazon internships
Start job hunting 6-9 months before graduation. There are positions aimed specifically for new grads and they’re marked with (wait for it) “NEW GRAD” in the job title. They’re hard to miss. These positions are specifically for college students without any work experience but they have strict deadlines and cut-off dates that shouldn’t be missed. Examples of those are below.

PwC New Grad
Google Students
Facebook New Grad
JP Morgan New Grad

8 Tips to Find a Job after an Online Course

8 Tips to Find a Job after an Online Course
Online courses have become increasingly popular in recent years, with millions of people enrolling to learn new skills and advance their careers. However, once the course is complete, many students are left wondering how to turn their newfound knowledge into a job. As the cost for online courses might get high–for instance, DataCamp pricing is around $300 but there are much more expensive companies–you want to be sure you’ll quickly start making money after the completing.  This article uncovers eight actionable tips to help you find a job after completing an online course.
Networking is a powerful tool
Networking is a critical skill to reach your goals, and this also is one of the most effective ways to find a job. The team from Self-Starters, a project focused on online courses, recommends reaching out to recent graduates of your online course and asking if they find a job after completion. Ask them how they managed to get a desired position or why they haven’t found a job. Moreover, ask them about their background before the course as well as how persistent they were in their search. These are important factors that have a huge impact on the result.   Meanwhile, attend offline or virtual events and webinars related to your career field to connect with potential employers and recruiters. Don't be afraid to speak first to new people and ask for advice or information about these companies. For example, if you took an online course in web development, reach out to local tech companies, ask whether they have open positions, and apply for an interview (even if you don’t feel you are a good fit).
Dozens of interviews will make you ready
To get a new job, you usually need to go through a lot of job interviews before you get hired, especially when you are at the entry-level stage of your carer. So don’t lose any opportunities to practice. You need dozens of interviews to understand how to communicate your skills to get the job you want. Reach out to recruiters of both small and big companies and show your interest–your motivation and persistence might help to get to the interview there. Moreover, don't be afraid to ask for mock interviews with somebody who already works in your design field.
Free help might bring you a paid job
Offering your services for free can be a great way to gain hands-on experience in your field and make connections with potential employers. Many non-profits and small businesses are always in need of people like you, and this can be a great way to gain valuable experience and make a positive impact in your community.   For example, if you took an online course in marketing, consider getting experience in a non-profit and helping them with their marketing efforts. You can also reach out to your favorite Youtubers and offer them help at no cost. An effective approach here is to come up with a ready strategy and show them your expertise and motivation. Even if they don’t hire you, you will extend your portfolio.
Dive into job searching
There are many job search websites that can help you find job opportunities in your field. Some popular ones include LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor. Make sure to customize your CV and cover letter for each job application, and take the time to tailor your application to the specific requirements listed in the job posting. For example, if you took an online course in data analysis, search for job opportunities on LinkedIn and Indeed, and make sure to highlight your skills in data visualization and predictive modeling in your resume and cover letter.
Freelancing is an alternative
Another way to make money in your desired field is freelancing. It is an alternative to full-time employment that helps you gain experience and build your portfolio. You can start by offering your services on websites like Upwork or Fiverr. This will show what is expected from you, gain real-world experience, build your network, and potentially lead to a full-time job opportunity down the road. For example, if you took an online course in graphic design, consider offering your services on Upwork as a freelance graphic designer to build your portfolio and gain experience.
Strong online presence
With so many businesses and job seekers using the internet, having a strong online presence is critical to your job search success. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and reflects your skills and experience. Consider creating a professional website or portfolio to showcase your work and online course projects. For example, if you took an online course in digital marketing, you can create a website that highlights your skills in social media management, content creation, and data analysis.
Be open to opportunities
Be open to new opportunities and don't limit yourself to only one specific job or industry. Sometimes the best job opportunities come from unexpected places, so it's important to be open to new possibilities. Consider taking on a part-time or freelance job outside of your desired field to gain new skills and make connections. You never know where it may lead. For example, if you took an online course in web development, don't limit yourself to only seeking full-time web developer positions. Instead, consider taking on freelance projects in related fields such as UX design.
Keep learning and improving your skills
Tumblr media
Finally, keep learning as the job market is constantly changing, and new technologies and approaches are being changed all the time. Consider enrolling in additional online courses or attending workshops and seminars to stay current and improve your skills. This will make you a more valuable candidate to potential employers and increase your chances of finding a job. For example, if you took an online course in project management, consider enrolling in additional courses in agile project management or attending virtual workshops to stay current and improve your skills.
Final thoughts
Finding a job after completing an online course can be challenging, but it's not impossible. By building a strong online presence, networking, using job search websites, freelancing, and continuing to learn and improve, you can increase your chances of success and find a job in your desired field. Good luck with your job search! Read the full article

Why a Good Resume Format is Important 🧐
When applying for jobs, your resume is often the first thing potential employers will see 👀. A resume is not just a list of your qualifications; it’s your personal marketing tool 📈. A well-structured resume creates a lasting impression and helps you stand out among the competition.
Here’s why having the right resume format is essential:
First Impressions Matter 💥: Your resume is your first opportunity to make a positive impression. If your resume is organized, easy to read, and visually appealing, hiring managers are more likely to take notice.
Helps Highlight Key Information 🔑: A good resume format ensures that your most important skills, achievements, and qualifications stand out. By structuring your resume effectively, you make it easier for recruiters to scan your document quickly and find relevant information.
ATS Compatibility 🤖: Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes. A clean, simple resume template ensures that the ATS can read your resume without errors or issues, helping your resume reach the hands of recruiters.
Professionalism 🧑‍💼: A well-organized resume communicates your attention to detail and professionalism, which is crucial in any job application.
Customizability ✏️: Good resume templates are easy to customize, so you can tailor your document to fit the specific job you're applying for, giving you the flexibility to highlight relevant skills and experience.
Choosing the right resume format is key to ensuring that your qualifications stand out and get the attention they deserve.

How Long Should a Resume Be in 2021?
Tumblr media
How many pages should a resume be?
A resume should be one page for most applicants, especially for students and anyone with fewer than 10 years of relevant work experience.
Hiring managers are busy people, and a one-page resume gives you enough space to communicate your professional experience and skills without using up too much of their time.
However, if you have more than 10 years of experience in your industry, you can make a two-page resume to elaborate on that experience and showcase all of your job skills and qualifications.
When it comes to the length of your resume, what’s most important is that all the information you include is relevant and concise.
A two to three-page resume is only a problem when it’s full of unimportant information or old jobs that no longer represent your current skill set.
How to achieve the ideal resume length
So now you know how long your resume should be. But condensing all your experience and skills onto a single page can be difficult.
Don’t worry — anyone can hit the ideal resume length with these three tips (really, anyone: even Elon Musk’s resume can be trimmed to one page):
1. Tailor your resume to each application
Many job-seekers assume that their resume should list most (if not all) of the jobs they’ve held in their lives. However, this is only the case if you’re writing a job-seeker CV outside of North America.
The best way to ensure you achieve the proper resume length when writing your resume is to tailor it directly to the position you want.
Tips:
Every job you apply for has different requirements and qualifications. Whenever you apply for a new job, your resume (and cover letter) should change to reflect these requirements.
For example, service industry jobs can teach highly valuable soft skills. However, if you’re writing a marketing resume, including information about your experience waiting tables is irrelevant and should be left off.
To tailor your resume, start by looking at the job description, and remove anything that isn’t directly mentioned in the listing. In particular, look out for specific skills they’re looking for, and how many years of experience they want.
Reducing your resume to only the most relevant information not only helps you fit it on one page, it also makes you look perfectly suited for the position.
Tips:
Additionally, remove any positions that you held a long time ago. If you’re unsure how far back your resume should go, just omit anything over 10–15 years old.
2. Adjust your formatting
Have you fine-tuned the language in your resume but still can’t fill every page? Try adjusting your resume’s format.
First, try making your resume margins smaller to fit more words on the page. Then, make your resume font smaller. Just don’t go under 10 pt font, otherwise it risks becoming unreadable.
You can also try to shrink your resume header or remove unnecessary graphics to free up more space.
And if you still can’t fit everything on one page, try using tables to organize the smaller sections of your resume. For example, many job seekers format their skills section like this:
While easy to read, this isn’t an efficient use of the space on your resume.
Instead, use a table (and with the borders removed) to format your skills section like this:
If you have trouble using Word, try using a resume template that has pre-made tables.
Using tables helps you format your resume efficiently, and gives you more space to include valuable information.
3. Get to the point
Recruiters don’t want to read about every detail of your work history when reviewing your application. To ensure you highlight the information they do want to read, the professional experience section of your resume should be concise but informative.
Rather than try to cover everything you did at your previous jobs, narrow your bullet points down to three to five of your most impressive or relevant accomplishments.
Additionally, if you have an older position on your resume or one in which you were still an entry-level employee, provide just two to three bullet points. This way, you have more space to elaborate on your more current experience.
Then, go through your resume several times and see if you can simplify your language. Remove filler adverbs (like “very” and “extremely”) to shorten sentences and make everything easier to read.
Tip
Also, avoid starting your bullet points with lengthy phrases like “Responsible for…” Instead, use concise action words that get right to the point about what you accomplished.
Resume length FAQs
How long should my resume be?
Long enough to clearly illustrate why you’re the most qualified candidate for the role (so usually one page). Executive-level resumes should be longer than entry-level ones.
What’s the standard number of pages on a resume?
One page, although two-page resumes for senior-level employees and executives as well as multi-page CVs aren’t unusual.
Can a resume be 3 pages?
Yes, if you have enough relevant experience. But don’t make it three pages long unless every piece of information applies to the job you’re applying for.
How long should a CV be?
There’s no limit to how long a CV can be. Academics are expected to list every publication and academic achievement, so the standard academic CV format is quite flexible in terms of length.

Learning how to be a designer is all about tapping into your creativity and leveraging the latest technology to make your creative vision come to life. So why does it feel so hard to put together just the right appealing, tech-savvy portfolio to land that first job, coveted internship, or freelance gig?
You’d think it’d be a snap, given all the design projects you’ve done for school, for friends and family, for clients, or even to hone your own creative process. But somehow many early career designers and freelancers get stuck, wondering how to create a portfolio that will catch a hiring manager or new client’s attention.
Creating a portfolio that engages and activates
According to career coach EB Sanders, portfolio problems usually start because designers don’t put enough value on their own unique creative voice.
Those hiring for entry-level jobs, freelance spots, and internships know when they’re evaluating “greener” candidates and, in these cases, don’t expect significant “real-world” experience. Instead, hiring managers are looking more for creativity, personality, and originality than they are a jam-packed resume of professional work.
Indesign To Xd Conversion
They want to see candidates who can clearly showcase their perspective, skills, and technological knowledge through a vivid, curated portfolio — and that, easily, can be you.
“A lot of students get tripped up on this idea that they have to show the most polished portfolio ever, that it has to be crammed full of tons of work,” says EB. “But what your portfolio really needs to be at this point is clear. It needs to excite. It really needs to show your creative thought process, who you are as a creative, and the type of work that excites you. You really just want it to be the best example of you and what you’re going to be able to do for that creative team.”
To achieve this, EB recommends some tips for putting together a portfolio that will help you shine, regardless of whether your best work was done for an employer, for a professor, or for your sister’s school fundraiser.
1. Focus on what excites you. Put the work you’re most excited about front and center in your portfolio, even if it’s not technically your best work. If that type of work is what you want to be doing more of in your career, make sure that comes across loud and clear. “You don’t want to take jobs in things you’re not excited about,” EB says. “That’s not going to work well for anyone. Start with the work you want to do in your career.”
2. Be direct and concise: A long-winded biography or extensive resume will not engage your reader as much as one well-crafted paragraph about who you are, your interests, and what you’re excited about. Same goes for your portfolio.
“A lot of people try to pack their portfolio full,” EB says. “They try to make it seem like they have more experience than they do. Don’t do it. You really want your portfolio to be well curated and, really, just the best example of you and what you’ll do for that creative team.”
3. Include diverse work. Make sure your portfolio shows that you can work on a range of different problems and satisfy many types of client needs. The projects you include should vary in style, purpose, technical complexity, and technology used. If your work all looks the same, consider broadening your portfolio by doing a few freelance gigs or helping out some friends with free design projects.
4. Keep it clean, clear, and beautiful. Your portfolio is a creative project in itself, but be careful not to clutter. “Having a digital portfolio that is clean and clear is going to be so much better at the end of the day,” notes EB. “Think interesting, but not overwrought.”
For images, remember collages and carousels are your friends — you can easily make these in Photoshop — and If you really want to impress, incorporate gifs in your portfolio to showcase multiple photos, and also check off some marketing skills while you’re at it.
Adobe Dimension is also a great tool for bringing creative solutions to life. You can easily take that branding project out of Illustrator and mock them up using your assets in your Creative Cloud Library — one of the easiest 3D programs built for the tools you already use.
5. Reveal your personality. This part should be easy. Hiring managers are hiring you — as a person, not a set of skills — to take part in a team within a company. Selling your originality will help employers see how you fit the culture. Whether it means adding a personal logo, their bio, their creative projects, or maybe the color scheme, these solutions help you stand out.
6. Make it digital and mobile friendly. Put your portfolio in a format your employers can easily access anywhere. If you’re any type of designer, having a website is pretty much expected — how you curate your projects in a beautiful, seamless display is the biggest challenge. With Adobe Portfolio, half the work is done for you, with beautiful, customizable templates like Matthias Heiderich, and others, for a sleek, chic, professional look — no coding necessary.
Adobe XD can help to build out a compelling live mobile design — even if those designs don’t extend beyond your portfolio.
7. Evolve your portfolio. Keep up with advances in technology and make sure to showcase pieces for which you used new software. Doing this is as much about showing employers your ability to adapt and learn new tech as it is about proving the tech skills you already have. “Knowing Adobe Photoshop and becoming really familiar with it, it’s absolutely necessary,” EB says. “In design, knowing Adobe software is essential — it’s very, very much in demand. It’s something people expect to see, especially if you’re doing things like responsive web design.”
8. Try the “unique” approach. There’s no doubt digital is the industry standard, but there are plenty other unique approaches that’ll demand attention. If you’re a copywriter, consider using InDesign to lay out your work in a book or zine, and wow them at the interview.
Ever wondered if those clever portfolio review tactics work? Bring a project to life and use it to start the conversation — even the most senior designers can admit having an appreciation for a good ol’ well-executed review tactic.
9. Showcase your passion projects: Your portfolio should include a section for miscellaneous projects you’ve done purely to fulfill your own creative impulses. Don’t be afraid to include idiosyncratic projects, whether that’s yarn bombing, dystopian tattoo art, carving fruits and vegetables, improv comedy, or whatever else you do for art’s sake. Let your uniqueness shine.
Besides, EB says, this addition could be unknowingly relevant — and it could be the thing that separates you from the rest. “If I’m looking for someone to do work that has a humorous tint and I see a candidate happens to write improv plays on the side, I know they have that sense of humor,” says EB, “and that they can do things on the fly and likely have a quick wit that will serve them well when the third change rolls in — at 11 at night.”
Whether you’re looking for that first (or next) job, eager to land an internship, or seeking a new freelance client, a compelling portfolio is essential. But, again, there’s no need to let a lack of experience in the working world slow you down. Focus on creating a book that reflects your unique point of view and is proud of the work you’ve done and the perspective you’ve gained.
“Listen to that voice telling you to showcase your weird, at least a little bit,” EB says. “You want to be professional, but company culture is such a big deal. Personality is such a big deal. The unique person you are is going to be a big piece of the hiring puzzle.”

Tumblr media

"From IT Certificate completers to Googlers"
Like many success stories, our journey to create the Google IT Support Certificatewas inspired by a challenge: We had issues finding qualified candidates to fill our own IT support team. We developed the Google IT Support Certificate (IT Cert for short), which requires no experience or degree, and helps prepare people for entry-level jobs in IT support in three to six months. In addition to helping us fill roles at Google, we created a hiring consortiumof over 50 national employers, including companies like Hulu, Sprint and Walmart, which consider graduates for roles.
In today’s economic environment, we’re committed to creating further access to job training to help people grow their career and economic potential. We’ve seen great results with the IT Cert: 80 percent of program participants report a positive career impact like a raise or a promotion, and 58 percent of participants identify as Black, Latino, female and/or veteran. But our work is not done. We recently created more pathways to jobs, including new Google Career Certificates in high-paying, high-growth career fields that do not require a degree, a new apprenticeship program at Google that teaches the certificate and a program that will bring the IT Cert to 100 career and technical education high schools for free by the end of 2021.
Learn more today by joining our Grow with Google OnAir session, Plan Your Next Career Move with Google's IT Certificate. And read on to hear from graduates who experienced everything from homelessness to unemployment before taking the Google IT Cert and starting a role at Google.

Chelsea Rucker, Data Center Technician, Google
Chelsea Rucker had recently moved out of a shelter for homeless women in Nashville with her two young daughters. After taking a job at her local Goodwill, she learned the organization had partnered with Google to offer its IT Cert program. She received a program scholarship and spent the next several months enrolled in the self-directed course, carving out time to study while balancing her duties as a single mother and her 40-hour work week at Goodwill. After completing the program, she found an open IT role at Google, but struggled with imposter syndrome.
“I thought there was no way Google would hire me,” she says. “After I gathered up the courage, I sent them my resume.” Chelsea landed the job at Google and credits the IT Cert program with giving her the foundational knowledge she needed to succeed.
“Nobody ever talks about how this is possible—if we become well-versed in technology, we’ll find all kinds of opportunities..I’m a firm believer that difficult does not mean impossible,” Chelsea says.

Xavier Heydt, IT Resident, Google
Xavier had always been good with computers, even helping family and friends build them, but had never really considered an IT career. He started with Linux and Python courses at a community college, but then heard about the Google IT Cert and finally saw a career he was interested in. He enrolled in the program. “It was like a fire hose of knowledge,” Xavier says.
After completing the program, he shared his resume with several companies from the program’s hiring consortium. Within two weeks, a Google recruiter reached out and encouraged him to apply to Google’s Information Technology Residency program. Thanks to the courses, he was ready for the technical interviews and got a job in internal IT support at Google’s Ann Arbor office. “I don't know what my career trajectory would have been without the certificate program,” he says. “My experience at Google has been life-changing and the Google IT Cert is what opened that door for me.”
Tumblr media
Aldi Suryoutom, IT Resident, Google
Aldi first was introduced to computers when he was around 7, growing up in Indonesia. His father brought home a PC with a Pentium 1 microprocessor in it. He would spend hours exploring how this new machine worked, trying to understand how the programs operated and tinkered with the hardware until the computer would freeze up.
Aldi enrolled in the IT Cert program and loved the process and lessons. “The IT Cert program does a great job of preparing us for interviews with real word examples and practice,” he says. “I used to program to prepare for my interview questions that the recruiters asked me.”  Aldi was offered a job within Google’s IT services and went from being a student technician to working in an IT support role. “Everything I learned from the IT Cert program led me to Google,” he says.
