I tried really hard to be a list girlie with cute notebooks and all that, but I’m not.

I’m going to get annoyed when my lists aren’t aesthetically pleasing. If I make a spelling mistake I’ll have to redo the whole page. And even though I wish I liked the process I actually don’t! I don’t want to spend 15 minutes writing and formatting a notebook page.

So, this is your sign that it’s okay do use the easier, less visually appealing option because it works for you.

The free iOS reminders app completely changed my life. Its all I need. It’s uniform, you can create categories, set colors, and easily edit. I can set times to be reminded and have them automatically reset after completed. I can have reminders stay on my screen as a push notification or on the app logo as a badge so I can be continuously reminded things need doing.

I robbed myself of organization for so long because I wanted it to be a certain way and for what? Use what you need to, it’s not all or nothing.

Y E S! My comments on AO3 are unrestricted on all fics, please go ahead and ask whatever you want to know about any of them. I'm not looking for constructive criticism, though. (But if you find a typo or a punctuation fail, please do let me know lol. It shouldn't happen with multiple layers of spell and grammar checkers, but sometimes I add something last second before hitting "publish", and sometimes my brain is not braining while I do so.)

For spontaneous short fics (and for plot bunnies that came out of nowhere), I use Google Docs. It's great because it auto-saves, and I can access my docs on any device.

Then I have Scrivener for fics that require a bit more planning or are more than just one scene.

I made different templates for the different kind of fics I usually write (and should I ever feel like I'm 100% happy with my ever-evolving templates, I'll happily share them!); and it's perfect to organise and keep all plot bunnies in check.

How was I ever able to live without the Corkboard and without being able to shuffle scenes and around like index cards? I love this fucking Corkboard, I love the binder, I love that I have a template that groups all "Save the Cat!" plot beats into the three acts of the three-act structure. And my god, do I love that I'm also able to customise the theme of my Scrivener and turn it into a pastel rainbow. Absolute eye candy! <3

I very recently treated myself to Scrivener for iOS, and I'm so happy that I did! Again, Google Docs is great for some quick note-taking, but being able to add a new index card to my WIP's Corkboard wherever I am? Priceless!

For mind maps, I use Scapple. It's from the same company that makes Scrivener, Literature & Latte. Good to organise thoughts, not necessarily a must-have. There are free mind map tools out there. I just want to support Literature & Latte.

I also use voice-to-text, because that's something that really helps me whenever I feel like I can't write. The words are there, the stories are there, but I can't fucking write them down for whatever reason.

After experimenting with different free options (let me know if you're interested in my thoughts on them and which I would recommend), I settled for Nuance Dragon Professional 16, the best dictation software on the market, but also fucking expensive. I don't regret this. It's probably overkill if you're only using it for fanfic.

I don't use the mobile version, Dragon Anywhere, because it's a subscription based service now, and fuck that. It's probably really awesome and all, but I am not paying €150 per year for this.

So, to save money, I use my €1,000 dictation software with the free dictation app ALON Dictaphone to dictate chapters or scenes on my phone. There are probably better apps out there, but I've been using this one for more than ten years and I like it. You can organise your voice notes with labels, so you always know which fic they belong to. It also synchs with all cloud services out there (I use it with my free Dropbox), and I can access the files on my laptop when I need them. Dragon 16 can transcribe these files without playing them, which is really nice, because a) I don't have to listen to my own voice and b) I can do something else on my laptop and don't have to stay quiet while it's transcribing.

For spelling and grammar, I use LanguageTool. The free plan offers all I need, and it integrates with Google Docs and my browser. The best thing about it is that you can choose which English accent to write in, and it will tell you if an expression you used belongs to a different accent and offer you an alternative.

For a quick final edit, I use ProWritingAid and Hemingway Editor. I like that you can choose the genre in PWA. I dismiss a lot of their suggestions, though. There's a reason I chose passive voice for this one sentence, dammit! xD

AutoCrit also offers interesting editing tools. I'll give it a go at one point, but for now I've only played around with the example text a little.

I've mentioned before that the Eywa app provides your phone with the Na'vi keyboard which is great, but what i didnt mention is that its also a English/Na'vi dictionary. It has a lot of entries and definitions and their grammatical information (like if its a transitive verb, etc). It also used IPA markings to give an exact idea of how to pronounce the word.

Its a great starting app for getting your fingers comfortable with Na'vi phonetics on a mobile device (for Apple iPhone and iPad users only right now, unfortunately lol). However, there seems to be a few features that dont seem to function right now:

Sometimes the function doesnt seem to output relevant results:

(left) I searched "oe", which means i/me and got words with the letters 'o-e' together rather than the word as the first results (right) I searched "taron", which means hunter, and, similarly, got a words with the letters 't-a-r-o-n' together, which is apparent since a different word, "sätaron", is the first result.

This is not to breate the creators because this is a great resource thats still being curated. The search bar functions for most other words (I searched "ikran, fmi, kaltxì", and "kop" and they came up first after I spelled the whole or most of the word), and while the audio aspect of the definitions is convenient, its not necessary since there are IPA symbols to guide speech (plus i can imagine how much time and effort it takes to record and update audio for each entry). I still absolutely recomment this app for the keyboard and dictionary function for all Avatar fans and lì'fya leNa'vi learners like me (the app is free and you can purchase it on the App Store if you have an iPhone)! But I'm curious if other fans who've downloaded the app are having similar problems with it. 👀❔🌀

For additional context, I have an iPhone 8 iOS 15.5. The App Store indicates the last update by the Eywa app team was ~6 months ago and is currently on version is 1.5.0. paris caper was the iOS port, released in 2013 in japan and in 2014 for north America. it was supposed to be free with in-app purchases (gacha) but it became a priced title with gacha 💔 sega pulled the plug on it in 2015 and the official site is gone

it basically retold rhythm thief but extremely watered down with 30 rhythm games, more accent marks and different spellings for the characters' names, and had wacky dialogue (if the original game wasn't funny enough). i wish I had a jp copy of the app to dump so I can see what the original text was like (and perhaps differing assets ??? yum)

you could also dress up raphael in various outfits (you might have seen him in a hot pink suit or a fondue onesie). there were special chapters that were hidden behind paywalls. there were limited accomplices you can roll for in gacha. that sort of thing

while i personally never had the opportunity to play Paris Caper since I did not and still don't have an iPhone, I hope that this game could be playable again one day. I'm still working to add what I know about the game onto the wiki (absolutely batshit insane of me considering I didn't play the game, I know)

Artist Spotlight with Taylor Swift

How to get an 8/9 in GCSE French

Disclaimer: I did GCSE AQA French, so my tips are specific to them. Still, I think that this could generally be applied to language learning.  

Hi! I’ve been on quite the journey with French, so I thought I’d try to help some people out. 

My story:

Up until about December in Year 11, I was doing foundation GCSE French, because I generally had little passion for French. I think I was predicted a 5 in French at the beginning of Year 11. Still, I crammed a lot of vocabulary for my December mocks, and as a result I got the highest grades in my class, which allowed me to move up to top set and do higher. I also did a higher reading mock, which I got an 8 in. 

Around February time, I started seriously studying French a lot (for about 2 hours a day - I got up at 5 AM and studied in the morning before school), and the quality of my work improved dramatically. I think that if I had studied less, and simply distributed the work across the year, then I would have gotten the same result (probably better).

I ended up getting an 8 because I received an 88% in my listening, a 96% in my reading (the highest in my class), and I did well in my speaking and writing too, though I can’t exactly remember what.

Right, now let’s get on with it!

General tips:

Use a textbook to practice specifically for GCSEs. For exam practice I used the Studio GCSE French Higher Textbook, which was extremely good. Make sure that you get ahold of the audio, because that is extremely useful. I also used the CGP GCSE French all-in-one textbook. I mostly used this for grammar, and it was quite helpful.

Consistency is key with languages. I recommend studying vocabulary every day (it’ll only take you about 5-10 minutes), and have a focused longer study session of about 30 minutes 2 or 3 times a week. Alongside that, try listening to or reading French when you have some dead time to fill. It’ll be helpful, I promise!

Do not joke about in your classes. Try to stretch yourself as much as you can, and don’t be afraid to ask your teachers for new vocabulary, or to explain some grammar.

Practice questions are key. For spelling, grammar, exam technique and general practice, they will get you used to the language and improve your ability to look deeper into the language.

Use your interests to your advantage to practice the language. Watch youtube videos about subjects that interest you, read or maybe even write fanfiction in French, text natives on discord! The sky’s the limit, so go out there and do stuff!

The specification is your friend. Seriously. It contains all the grammar and vocabulary. Use it as a guideline for what you are supposed to do.

When practicing French, except for grammar and translations, try to minimise your contact with English so you can maximise your study time.

Languages are hard. I absolutely adore languages, and would say that I am quite good at them, but it is still insanely difficult for me to keep going. Don’t worry if it is difficult, because it is supposed to be. 

Learn from your mistakes in your writing, mocks, practice questions and speaking, because I guarantee you will make loads. Just try targeting your weak areas next time you revise. 

Vocabulary:

Flashcards are your friend! For GCSE vocabulary, I personally used this memrise course, which was extremely helpful. I recommend memrise because it is extremely thorough, and makes sure that you can memorise spelling, and how to translate to and from the language. For miscellaneous vocabulary, I recommend apps like Quizlet or Anki (use the free web version if you use ios).

Write down new words when you come across them in practice questions, articles and other sources, and later on try and incorporate them into your writing or speaking. 

Exposure to the language will help you consolidate your knowledge, so try using your dead time to listen or read in French (though this is not necessary for success).

Start learning vocabulary at the beginning of the year, and keep going every day until the end of your final exam.

Grammar:

I absolutely despised grammar at the start of the year and now I’m...ok with it. It definitely does not come naturally to me, and I cringe when I look at some of my old writing. I have improved a lot though, so hopefully I can give some sound advice.

Practice questions are key here. I used “complete French grammar”, which was extremely useful (you can probably find a PDF of it online - @wilstudies​ has one if you would like to ask her). I also used the practice questions in the CGP textbook. Try to memorise most of the grammar patterns in the textbooks by the end of the year, since they are quite complex and will get you good grades for the writing.

A grammar structure is basically just a pattern, so try to watch youtube videos or read textbooks that help you understand and recognise it. Then, just reinforce your understanding with some practice questions.

Learn the structure/rule in context through exposure and example sentences. The more you see it, the more you will become acclimated to the more subtle nuances in its usage. Note the situations in which the grammar rule is used, and experiment a bit in your writing.

Writing is a really good way of seeing if you understand a rule, so once you have learnt a rule, keep trying to use it in your writing. Make sure that you get corrected, and learn from your mistakes. In general, just use what you learn actively.

Irregular verbs are very important, so make sure that you have a secure knowledge of them. For me, I did lots of practice questions, and also made a lot of mistakes that were corrected. Exposure was what got them stuck into my long term memory (I think you’ll be noticing a theme here). Remember the different forms the verb takes depending on the pronoun.

I also consolidated my knowledge with season 2 of Coffee Break French. That was useful for me to review and sort out my knowledge.

Listening:

Know your vocab!

For my intermediate level in my French, one of my favourite ways to practice listening is to dictate what I am hearing. This is my method: Listen to the recording once, and just try to understand it. Listen to it again, and this time, write down what was said in the recording without checking the transcript(make sure that you get spelling and grammar correct too!). Check it against the transcript and make corrections in a different colour. Listen to the recording again and read the transcript at the same time

You can also just do a lot of practice questions from your textbook. 

Exposure is also helpful here. You can just listen to intermediate French on the way to school (inner french is really good for this!), or while you are in the shower or doing something that doesn’t require much thought. Slowly but surely, you will get used to the sounds of the language, and listening will become a lot easier. I also think that you should focus more on automatically understanding than just translating, as this will save you time in the exam. 

Watch French youtube videos online with French subtitles, and try to read and listen at the same time (my favourites for this were Cyprien and Easy French). You can also do this with audiobooks, or even just practice questions with a transcript. This was very useful for me, because the exposure I had to faster French meant that it was pretty easy to keep up with the recordings. Try to watch or listen to things that you like, so that you will be more likely to pay attention (for example, I love learning languages, so I watched a lot of videos about that). Don’t be disheartened if you can’t understand much because that is perfectly natural.

In the exam, listen as intently as you can and look out for tenses and negatives and contradictions. For the first time it plays, just listen and do not try to write anything down. If you have been consistently practicing, then you should be able to understand most of it automatically. Quickly write down the answer before the recording plays again. The second time the recording plays, check your answer and change it if you realise you misheard something.

Maybe try casually listening to music in French. 

Reading:

Vocabulary is important here too!

Practice questions are good here as well. Get into the habit of reading every word instead of skim reading, as you could end up missing out important contradictions or negative formations. If you are a slow reader, then just try reading French more. Give yourself a challenge of reading a short article in under 2 minutes, and keep practicing until your speed improves.

Be hot on your vocabulary and grammar (especially the tenses and negatives), particularly for the translation. Be very secure in the basics of grammar (gender, adjective agreement etc.), and make sure that you notice any particular grammar rules and conjugations you need (e.g. “used to”, irregular verbs like “did” etc.) for the translation. The vocabulary and grammar will definitely be more difficult in reading, so be aware of that.

For me, the biggest thing that I did was just to read lots in French. I love fanfiction, and a few of my favourite fanfics have been translated into French, so I tried to read them. I tried to read “Et Si C’était vrai….” as well, though I did not make it very far here. I also read articles and wikipedia pages about things that interested me, which was really helpful. This exposed me to a lot of cool new vocabulary words and phrases (which I used in my writing and speaking) , and also meant that I saw a lot more complex grammar structures, which drastically improved my grammar. It was definitely hard, I won’t lie to you, but if you find something that interests you then it’ll be worth it. You can also read social media posts in French if you want to practice more.

In your mocks and the tests leading up to your exam, ask your teachers for help with any vocabulary that you do not understand in the test. 

In the actual exam, read every word and scribble down whatever you think the answer is afterwards. Once you are done, go through the exam again to check all your answers more slowly. Reread the texts multiple times, and look out for any more complex grammar structures and formations.

Don’t be disheartened if it is hard. I found my paper quite difficult, even with all the exposure I had outside of class. You can still do well if you find it difficult. I found my December mock paper damn near incomprehensible but I ended up getting an 8. Just keep going and try your best.

Writing:

Once again, know your vocab (and try to widen it)!

Writing has always been my weak point. In my old pieces, my grammar was terrible and I sounded tremendously awkward. I stuck at it though, and this earned me a solid grade in my writing, with a few even getting close to full marks. 

Grammar is unbelievably important here, especially the tenses. Try to use the 6 main tenses (you can find them in the specification) in your writing, and remember irregular verbs. Practice questions and usage are again really useful here. Refer to my tips above about grammar for further ideas.

Practice questions and past papers are really useful as well. Just keep on trying to write long form pieces of writing, and post them on Journaly to receive corrections. 

When you write, look up words that you might want to use, and put them in a flashcard app to memorise later.

Use more complex tenses and grammar structures in your writing from your textbook (e.g. subjunctive, en [present participle], venir de + infinitive etc.). You can probably find a lot of lists of 7+ structures online if you look hard enough.

Don’t forget to be secure in the basics (present tense, comparatives/superlatives, adjective agreement etc.)!

Memorise complex set phrases and vocabulary from native material using flashcards to boost your grade (e.g. étant donné que, en proie à, “J’ai pensé que j’allais…”, il faut etc.).

In your writing, be specific to the theme or topic you are writing about. I lost a couple of marks in my tourism task because I spent more time talking about Japan in general than my actual experience there. It is immensely frustrating to work so hard on your vocabulary and grammar only to end up losing marks on something that is not even related to your competence in the language. Try to be as concise and relevant as you can. 

Make sure that you explain your reasons and opinions for things, but do not ramble too much like I did and risk wasting your word count. 

If you can make the sentence more complex, then do it. Try to encompass multiple structures and tenses in a single sentence if you can. When you practice writing, stretch yourself as far as you can.

For a quick and easy way to practice writing, text people on apps like Tandem and HelloTalk. It’ll improve your speed and also help you make new friends. 

Speaking:

Learn specification vocab!

Find somebody to speak with. I started to have weekly conversations with a friend of mine, and this dramatically improved my speaking ability. Look up words you don’t know as you go, and try not to use English. Speak about a wide range of subjects, and try to practice describing things and opinions as quickly as you can. If you don’t have a buddy, then try speaking to yourself and recording it to post online for corrections (I think you can do this on HelloTalk and HiNative).

Make sure you know your question words.

Try to demonstrate a wide vocabulary, and use complex grammar structures. Practice doing this in your own time. 

Try talking about anecdotes, opinions, descriptions and dreams so that you can cover as wide a scope as possible. 

For your pronunciation, shadowing is probably the best way to improve that. For me, I shadowed Easy French videos, which really improved things. I also tried to read things out loud.

Summary:

Learn all the specification vocabulary from the beginning of the year

Do loads of practice questions for grammar and exam practice

Immerse yourself in dead time (read French articles, text people in French, watch French youtube videos, speak to yourself in French etc.)

Wizarding World Digital Announces Harry Potter Magic Caster Wand

On August 16, the Wizarding World’s official social media accounts made an exciting announcement about a new experience for Harry Potter fans. A brief teaser video unveiled the Harry Potter Magic Caster Wand, which will allow fans to “bring spells to life in an all-new way.”

    The social media posts each link to a new website for the experience, HarryPotterMagicCasterWand.com. The website features the logo for the experience as well as a wand animation that tracks the user’s cursor across the screen.

Two option buttons are located beneath the logo. The first allows the user to sign up for notification via email about updates regarding the experience. The other button links to the teaser video shared on social media. 

The announcement did not include much more information about what the wand experience entails. However, the end of the teaser video includes a small disclaimer at the bottom which explains, “Experience may require a compatible device and companion mobile app.” This disclaimer suggests that the experience may be an application that users can download onto their mobile devices. Interestingly the video and website appear to not be available in certain countries. This could give us a clue as to where this experience will launch first.

This would not be the first time the Wizarding World entered the world of mobile applications. One of the franchise’s most popular mobile apps, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, was first released in 2018. The application is a narrative role-playing game set at Hogwarts between 1984 and 1991. It is free to download and is available on Android and iOS devices. Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, a match-three puzzle game inspired by the Wizarding World franchise, was launched in 2020 for gameplay via iOS and Android devices, Amazon Kindle, and Facebook. 

An augmented reality game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, based on the Harry Potter franchise, debuted in 2019. Drawing inspiration from the popular game Pokémon Go, the application allowed users to create their own avatars and travel through the real world to find different items and creatures within the game. The game was ultimately shut down in January 2022.

Based on the information provided in the teaser video, it could be possible that the Harry Potter Magic Wand Caster will resemble Wizards Unite more so than the other applications. The new experience may make use of new augmented reality technology to simulate the act of casting spells in a similar manner to Wizards Unite.
