Assata Shakur is a revered figure in Black liberation movements and a former member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. She dedicated herself to the fight against systemic racism, police brutality, and social injustice, embodying revolutionary principles that continue to inspire freedom fighters.

Her arrest in 1973 followed a confrontation on the New Jersey Turnpike, where a shootout resulted in the death of a state trooper and injuries to others. Shakur was accused of murder and eventually convicted, though her trial has been widely criticized for its apparent bias. Shakur’s defense argued that she faced a deeply prejudiced legal system from the outset, marked by racial discrimination, an atmosphere of intense political repression, and media portrayals that painted her as a dangerous revolutionary simply due to her activism. Additionally, allegations emerged that critical evidence was mishandled, and Shakur maintained that she was physically incapable of committing the acts due to her injuries during the arrest.

On November 2, 1979, Shakur escaped from prison with the aid of supporters and found political asylum in Cuba, where she resides to this day. Her escape is celebrated by the Black Panther Party and other liberation movements as a powerful act of self-liberation and a statement against a legal system that her supporters argue was more invested in silencing Black revolutionaries than in justice. Assata Shakur remains a symbol of resistance, revered for her bravery, resilience, and unwavering commitment to Black liberation.

Transition Announcement of Dr. #MutuluShakur.

The New Afrikan People's Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement are deeply saddened to announce the transition of our beloved comrade and co-founder, Dr. Mutulu Shakur on Friday, July 7th, 2023.

Born Jeral Wayne Williams on August 8th, 1950, he was a loving father and grandfather, revolutionary acupuncturist, human rights organizer and former political prisoner of war. Mutulu's life was transformative to the many people he organized, healed, mentored and inspired. Dr. Mutulu Shakur taught us that “people struggle for liberation because they love [the] people.” He will always be remembered for his continued commitment to an independent and socialist New Afrika and for his battle cry, Straight Ahead!
