Transcribed from the glossaries of Krypton Chronicles (1981). Repeat entries are grouped together.
Before presenting the words and definitions, we'll give a few facts about Kryptonian language and names. We have done our best to translate the Kryptonese words and names into the English alphabet, but this is not always easy, as the Kryptonese alphabet consists of 118 characters, each with a precise sound. A double letter indicates a strong emphasis on the sound. Kryptonese plurals are created by adding an O to the word, as we add an S in English. Some are given below. Kryptonian men used hyphenated names, like Jor-El and Jax-Ur, the last part of the name being the family name, or surname. Women used the father's full name as a surname, except for orphans such as Lesla-Lar (see her name in the listing below). There are also 11 characters for the numerical system. Their zero is used only for the purpose of indicating a zero, while 10 has a special character of its own. Using the Roman X to stand for it, we could say that X=10, 1X=20, 2X=30, and so on. 100 is 9X, 101-X1, 110-XX, and 111 is the first three-digit number. The calendar is quite different from our own, since 18 Kryptonian years equal 25 Earth years. As the aging process was the same there, a Kryptonian was fully grown at the age of 15. Now, on to the definitions.
ALURA: 1) Wife of Zor-El and mother of Supergirl. 2) Wife of Zor-El and mother of Supergirl. See Zor-El and Argo City.

Many years later, its people were destroyed by Kryptonite, except for Zor-El, [Alura], and Kara (Supergirl), who had been born there after Krypton's death. See Kara and Zor-El.
BETHGAR: A ruler; roughly equivalent to our King or Emperor.

BRENN BIR: A criminal who joined with two friends, Vas Quor and Kyl-lbo, to terrorize Kandor when they acquired super-powers from contact with an old crony, Ak-Var. Ak had just been released from the Phantom Zone, and had been affected by Red Kryptonite, which always has unpredictable effects on Kryptonians. Ak-Var helped Superman defeat his former pals. For more on him, see under Van Zee.
BUR-EL: An ancestor of Superman who lived five generations after Krypton's Great Flood. His story is told in KRYPTON CHRONICLES #3.

The city was founded by outcasts from Erkol, murated by radiation during the Erkol-Xan war. Although they were strange in appearance and had telekinetic powers their offspring were normal.
LESLA LAR: A native Kandorian who was Supergiri's double and became her enemy. An orphan, Lesla took a surname from the family of her best friend, Zora Vi-Lar.

Despite the similarity to our word "elephant," there was little resemblance to this Earth creature except that both are large. When Jaf-El preached the worship of one god, he gave Him the name of Rao, though no longer identifying Him specifically with the sun. Note that in the wedding ceremony, the phrase used was "Rao, who kindled the sun," showing Him to be the sun's creator, but not the sun itself.

Though her worship ended with the flood, she was remembered in folklore, and at one time a mechanical statue of her was used at certain festivals in Superman's home city, Kryptonopolis.
ZOR-EL: 1) Jor-El ll's younger brother. He lived in Argo City. which survived Krypton's doom, but was later wiped out by Kryptonite. Sending Kara, his daughter, to Earth, he managed to project his wife, Alura, and himself into another dimension, from which Supergirl later freed them. Preserving the Flow: A Water Conservation Crusade
Definitions
"A story or narrative is a connected series of events told through words (written or spoken), imagery (still and moving), body language, performance, music, or any other form of communication" (Silverstein, n.d.).
"A tale is a comparatively simple narrative, either fictitious or true, written or recounted orally in prose or in verse. A tale often recounts a strange event, focusing on something or someone exotic, marvelous, or even supernatural" (Murfin & Ray, 2017).
"Science fiction, abbreviation SF or sci-fi, a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals" (Sterling, n.d.).
Sci-Fi Story
I’ve always desired the best for my grandsons. Therefore, I tried to give my best to grant them the greatest of opportunities. However, this didn’t happen.
The year is 2070, I’m 64 years old, and unfortunately, humans have made Earth an unhabitable place. All that could have gone wrong, did, and now we are living in an apocalyptic scenario in which wastes and pollution have filled up our communities. Indeed, my city, Guayaquil, is not the exception. People are dying due to the pollution in the air, and our river has dried up. All the good things I had desired for my grandsons, Edward and Emma, are now not possible due to living in the middle of these catastrophic events.
- Grandchildren, I promise I will do everything to give you a better future. – I said.
- You promise, Grandpa? – He asked me.
- I promise…
I wasn´t sure how I was going to do it but I couldn´t let them down.
One day, I decided to go out for a walk by the river because I knew that it would clear up my mind and give me more ideas about how to solve this problem. Still, no change in our present served as a solution. I needed to travel to the past! But, how could we achieve that?
Miraculously, at that same time, a kind of portal popped up in the water. Initially, I hesitated to go through the portal, but I had a good feeling about it.
Thus, without thinking twice, I jumped into the portal. Instantly, I found myself in the same river, but full of water. I must have gone back in time when humanity still had water. I needed to do something to make society notice how important saving water is. Consequently, I started to work very hard, going to schools, universities, and offices to promote my time-traveling saving water campaign. I show people from the past, images of how dry our world is in 2070. My main goal was to raise awareness about water saving importance to change my present. I worked on the campaign for about 6 months. After that, I went back to my present and I received great news. My grandchildren told me that now Guayaquil is full of water to consume, and my campaign has solved water scarcity! Now my grandchildren were going to have the future they deserved.
- Thanks for always carrying on and never giving up Grandpa. - Emma said.
- A brighter tomorrow awaits us. - I said.
Image regarding the story made by HotPot Artificial Intelligent web page. I asked the AI to create an image that depicts what my story tries to convey. I told it to portray a man going through a portal that popped up in a dry river in an apocalyptic scenario.

masterlist

“His name is Jisung, Han Jisung,” Chan explained.
You were standing around a table in the center of the institute, surrounded by screens and with the practice room to the left. Chan and Changbin stood on either side of you, Felix and Nayeon at the head of the table. You had explained who had tried to kidnap you and what he had said about the demons.
“We have to tell Jihyo about Jisung, I’m going to her office right now,“ Nayeon said, at the mention of Jisung’s name you had noticed the tension in everyone’s shoulders. Who was he and why did his name seem to make everyone uncomfortable?
“Who is this Jisung guy? Did you guys know him?” You asked, searching the eyes of each and every one of them for something. Something that could help make you understand.
“Jisung trained alongside Changbin and I, we were really close us three but…” Chan began remembering memories you could tell from the tone of his voice were painful, Nayeon put a hand on his shoulder before continuing the story.
“He was a very private person nonetheless, we didn’t know about his parentage and neither did the Clave, he never wanted anyone to know because of everything that happened. I suspect he was terribly embarrassed,” Nayeon’s usual glimmer in her eyes was nowhere to be seen, “When the Clave found out his mother was a Seelie, they exiled him and we all missed him terribly, Chan pleaded with the Consul for his return but they were adamant,”
“He ran away to Faerie then, joined the Seelie Queen’s court from what you’ve said,” Changbin explained, he glanced at Chan. He patted his back softly, “Chan, you did your best and you can’t save everyone,”
“So we know he’s after y/n and now that he knows she’s with us, he’s planning something and something big at that, he was always good at strategy,” Nayeon said, “I bet he didn’t even plan to kidnap her, he was just trying to surmise how well she could defend herself or rather how well we were protecting her,”
“That brings me to my point; y/n it’s your choice to stay or not but regardless you need to be able to defend yourself even if you don’t want to stay here that’s fine but at least stay until you’re able to defend yourself properly,” Chan asked, your knuckles brushed his as you carefully laid your hand over top of his,
“I don’t know how this works but being a Shadowhunter, it’s in my blood and this place, it feels right,” You said, you dreaded their response, ”I want to stay, I’d like to train and become one of you,”
A moment of pregnant silence fell over the room before Nayeon was bounding towards you, throwing her arms over your shoulders, “I knew you’d say that! It’s about time we got some more girls around here!”
“I liked her from the moment she mouthed off Changbin, if there’s anything you want from your old college dorm just let me know, I can make a trip there,” Felix said, Nayeon held her arms open to the rest of them and then you were engulfed by Felix and Chan as well,
“Oh come on, Binnie!” Chan laughed, gesturing for him to join the group hug. Changbin locked eyes with you properly for the first time since what happened between you, your breath caught in your throat.
“I think I’ll stay over here but welcome to the Seoul Institute team, Mundie,” Changbin stated plainly, arms crossed over his broad chest, “I look forward to kicking your ass in the training room,”
Changbin turned on his heel, his form disappearing to before mentioned training room. Chan sighed, pressing a kiss to your temple once you were freed from everyone’s arms, “I’m especially glad you decided to stay, y/n,”
“Ugh God as if I didn’t have to tell with Changbin bringing home who knows who and hearing that nonsense through the walls now I have to deal with this disgusting budding couple-y nonsense,” Nayeon stuck her tongue out in mock disgust accompanied by wretching noises from Felix. You couldn’t help but laugh at them.
“Alright, Chan and Felix I need you two for a reconnaissance mission I was supposed to go on but someone needs to explain everything that’s going on to Jihyo and help her plan our next move, Changbin can help you get started on your training, he’s harsh but easily the best here,” Nayeon doled out instructions like a governess did to her kids, you smiled at the thought, “We’ll all meet tonight with Jihyo to discuss the way forward,”
“For the record that’s not true, I was the best at the Academy,” Chan rebutted,
Felix let out a laugh, “Changbin’s kill count is higher though and he didn’t get bitten by a Shax demon a few days ago,”
Chan shot Felix a look, “Oi Felix, whose side are you on!?”
Your heart warmed at the sight in front of you, maybe just maybe this place was beginning to feel like home and these people like a little family that had in a way adopted you. You knew you’d made the right decision to stay.
Roughly three weeks later, all had been quiet so far.
You had met Jihyo and instantly liked her, she’d welcomed you formally to the institute. You almost felt guilty about choosing to just omit the issue of your parentage. Lying by omission was still lying after all. Besides that little fact you were slowly getting into a rhythm here especially since Felix had done you the kindness of bringing your things for you. Chan and Felix were on another recon mission right now, something simple and mostly safe Chan had reassured you so here you were, sparring with Changbin.
Well more like he was pushing you around.
“Again!” Changbin shouted for the umpteenth time, he had you flat on your ass for the umpteenth time as well. You huffed, pushing your sweaty hair out of your face, “Is it that hard for the little faerie princess to land a hit?
You so yearned to wipe that annoying smirk off his face, you had been practicing for hours. Changbin had insisted on using long sticks before you moved on to swords and as much as you deigned to admit you hadn’t landed a single hit yet since you began training and it frustrated you to no end, you were tired and sweat made your t-shirt stick to your skin. Exasperated you pulled it off, leaving you in your sports bra. With a deep breath, you took the stance Changbin had taught you. Holding tightly to your ‘weapon.’
“Come on then, land a hit and we can actually move on to actual swords,” He teased, his shirt sleeves were rolled up but he showed no sheen of sweat or any indication of tiring.
You took a step forward quickly, your weapons met with a sound, “Isn’t this unfair, don’t you have runes for agility and what not?”
“Yes and you will too soon but you should know how to take on an opponent obviously stronger than you,” Changbin deftly circled his own weapon, forcing yours to move with his. You knew it was a dirty move but you kicked out as his shin, he chuckled sidestepping your trick shot, “There we go, fight dirty,”
You glared at him, the proximity between you two felt like it had that night in Hyunjin’s study and it served to infuriate you further. If he could act as if it never happened so could you and you liked Chan and he actually liked you too. With a technique you learned somewhere at some point you slid your weapon out from his grip and made to attack again but this time, Changbin flipped out of your way the force of your step making you stumble a bit as you tried to brake and promptly hit the wall just managing to stop yourself from hitting your head by holding your hands out in front of you.
“Show off,” You spat at him, venom laced in your words.
“Your posture is terrible,” He exclaimed with a laugh and his head thrown back, he pushed you a little with the end of his stick.
You grabbed the end of it as you whirled around, pulling as hard as you could on it and he stumbled ever so slightly. You took that moment to attack and before he could react, you had your stick to his throat, your chest heaved but you felt almost euphoric. His eyes were wide in surprise as he took a step back.
“Alright, well done,“ He inclined his head ever so slightly, a show of respect as he took the stick from your hands, “Even if I was going easy on you and just so you know, I never activated any of my runes,”
You rolled your eyes, “Okay I get it, oh bigheaded master of everything,”
“Follow me to the weapons store, every shadowhunter gets to choose their own weapon,” Changbin threw your makeshift weapons into the designated box, leading the way to the armoury. You grabbed your water bottle on the way there, taking a long swig as you walked. You were met by a large door, with a heavy heave Changbin pushed it open.
You were pretty sure this was a homicidal maniac’s paradise. There was every type of weapon you could possibly think of: crossbows, swords, knives, daggers all of them -all were covered in runes. You couldn’t help but gawk a little at the sheer size.
“Go ahead, pick something out,” Changbin waved his hand, as if he simply wanted you out of his hair, “Hands off the double seraph blades over there on the wall, those are mine,”
You rolled your eyes, letting your fingers run over the swords mounted on the wall to your left. You could feel Changbin’s eyes burning down your back, you took a deep breath trying to focus on anything but the fact that you were alone with him again for the first time since what happened at the party. You didn’t even know why you had kissed him in the first place, it was stupid. Clearly you hadn’t guessed the potency of the drinks you had downed while Chan or Changbin weren’t looking. You had hoped the alcohol would of made the news Hyunjin had for you easier, you were wrong of course. You were in a sensitive mindset and he comforted you. It was simple, he was just there at the right- wrong time with a fire inside him that burned you clean of all memory of anything but him.
It was all silly anyway, why were you thinking about this right now?
You were with Chan. Warm, full of love and calmness. Peace.
That’s what you needed.
You shook your head, as if you could free your mind from the thoughts you had about the boy with the raven hair and pitch black gaze.
“Something wrong?” Changbin asked, you shook your head, “Your posture really is pretty shit, I suggest something lightweight that won’t throw off your already poor balance,”
“Any more harsh digs?”
“Plenty but today I woke up in a good mood,”
“This is a good mood?”
Changbin shrugged, you turned your back to him again. A glint of silver in the corner caught your eye, you made your way towards the box. Once you moved everything on top it; you were met with a singular long, thin yet still somehow small and dainty dagger with intricate designs on the handle. You picked it up, the weight was perfect, you practiced a few techniques you’d learnt with them.
“That blade is the partner to the one Chan gave you,” Changbin said, you almost jumped out of your skin when you realised he was right behind you, “It had belonged to me when I was younger,”
“Oh…” You trailed off, unsure how to approach his statement or rather how far you could probe on the topic, “Why did you stop using it?”
“I… grew out of it, I guess,” Changbin’s gaze gained a faraway look, ridden with emotion and he looked away from you instantly, “You sure you can handle double blades?”
“You said I needed balance, this way I’m balanced and deadly on both sides,” You explained, “Are you going to tell me the real reason why you stopped using this blade, don’t tell me it’s got some curse on it or do I have to beat you in the practice room first?”
You didn’t buy his excuse of growing out of it, did this blade have some sort of curse on it or something? Some dreadful history maybe?
You felt kind of guilty for prying but if this was going to be your new weapon you felt like you needed to know why it’s previous owner decided to do away with it. To go as far as to hide it away in a box.
“You really think you can take me on, princess?” He crossed his arms over his broad chest. His black t-shirt pulling taunt over the expanse of him as his biceps flexed.
You took a step forward, looking up into those taunting more black than brown eyes that had darkened instantly. You truly enjoyed challenging his arrogance,
“Try me,”
His eyes flicked up and down your body, you hated the way that simple look made your skin feel like it was burning. You hated the way the smallest things he did made you feel, you were building a deep hatred for the boy but right at that at that moment you were reminded of Chan. You shouldn’t be feeling like this with someone else, you had feelings for Chan not him. The air felt electrified between you, you couldn’t hold his gaze for much longer or you’d do something you’d both regret…
Suddenly Nayeon burst into the armoury, you took several steps back from Changbin. Nayeon’s eyes were red and glossed with what seemed like tears and dread filled your chest, “There you guys are! Chan’s back but Felix… Felix’s been taken,”
“Where’s Chan, who took him?!” You exclaimed, you didn’t know everyone here that well but Felix had always been kind to you.
He was sweet and had made you brownies a few days ago as a sort of welcome to the institute and you had a terrible suspicion about who had taken him. Words weren’t necessary as the the two of you followed Nayeon to the main headquarters.
“It was the Seelies, wasn’t it? Was it Jisung?” You asked Chan once you had all moved to the main headquarters, you held his hand tightly. Trying to offer him some sort of comfort.
Chan was visibly shaken by what had transpired mere minutes ago, he hadn’t even changed out of his gear. It was splattered with what looked like blood which you prayed wasn’t his, his hair was a mess as he tried to explain what happened. Chan and Felix had been on mission, they were ambushed by Shax demons like you had been and somehow Chan had lost track of where Felix was and when he had finally managed to dispose of all the Shax demons. Felix was in Jisung’s hands, a knife to his throat.
“He said to bring… her to the Queen in three days’ time or they’d kill Felix and they’d come back for another one of us as many times as necessary till we gave her up,” Chan finished, his head low in shame, “I begged Jisung to keep him safe till then and he said he’d be safe as long as we give them y/n in three days’ time, this is all my fault, I’m so stupid I should of been more careful,”
You placed your hand against his cheek, “Dont blame yourself, you were outnumbered,”
You knew he was probably blaming himself and you hated seeing him like that, Changbin patted his Parabatai’s back, “We’ll get him back, I promise even if I have to kill Jisung and that stupid Queen myself,”
“Changbin you know you can’t do that, you’re all but declaring war on the Seelies then,” Jihyo intervened, her head in her hands. You could see the tension in her shoulders, “As much as I would like to do that too, we have to go by the book on this if we want to keep Felix safe,”
“By the fucking book? They kidnapped Felix! They were the reason Chan almost died!” Changbin exclaimed, “I should’ve been there, I would of killed Jisung where he stood,”
“Jisung was one of us before you don’t mean that,” Nayeon said though her tone was meek, you couldn’t share in her sentiment. He was the one who had tried to kidnap you and sent those demons that had hurt Chan. You wanted him to pay as much as Changbin did.
“Not anymore,” Chan said, his fist clenched at his side.
“I’ll go,” You suddenly intervened, they all stared at you as if you just said something completely and utterly unthinkable, “I’ll go to Faerie, I’ll turn myself in,”
“She wants you dead, you can’t possibly be serious,” Changbin said to not just yours but everyone’s surprise.
“I’m serious, I need to face her,” You countered, “I don’t want anyone else getting hurt because of me especially not Felix,”
“I’m going to ask to meet with the Clave, someone has to know what we can do, maybe we can reason with the Queen,” Jihyo explained, “We’re not putting you up for slaughter,”
“But we’re putting Felix up for slaughter if we don’t do something!” Changbin all but shouted at Jihyo.
“Changbin, please I’m as angry as you but this is out of our hands, let Jihyo talk to the clave,” Chan said, a knowing look passed between Chan and Changbin and you cursed the fact that you couldn’t read minds at the moment. Changbin calmed almost instantly as if Chan had put some spell on him to calm him.
“We meet as soon as I come back from meeting with the Clave about the way forward,” Jihyo stated, her eyes scanning over everyone in the room, “For now, please try and get some sleep,”
Everyone was dismissed, you walked with Chan to his room. A comfortable silence settled between the two of you as you closed the door behind you, you had been sleeping in Chan’s room for a few nights now. You had realised he helped you fall asleep especially when he sang to you softly on especially difficult nights where you had nightmares. You brought him into your arms like he did. His head came to rest in the crook of your neck, you muttered comforting words to the best of your ability. You hoped it was what he needed to hear.
He gripped your waist tightly in his arms, “I don’t deserve you, baby girl,”
“You deserve everything good in this world, Chan, everything,” You puncuated your words by kissing him with all the emotion you had in you, he responded with the same soft intensity. A paradox in it’s own way you thought.
“I’m going to clean up,” His words that followed came tentatively, “You’re staying tonight, right?”
You nodded because you couldn’t verbalize your lie, not when he was so fragile. You felt like a disgusting person, you basically flirted with his Parabatai while he was gone and now you were lying to him but you knew he’d never let you go if you told him the truth about what you intended to do.
So you let him fall asleep with you in his arms and once you were sure he was asleep, you slid free from his arms. You allowed yourself a last look at his now peaceful face, free of any lines of worry or stress. Perhaps the last look you’d ever get of him. You kissed his cheek, praying to the Angel that he’d understand.
You snuck away to your room. Strapping on your new blade and the one Chan had gifted you as well as putting on the gear that Nayeon had given you. As you secured your gear, you thought about the plan you’d formulated. You’d go to Hyunjin’s place and ask him to get you into Faerie and… you’d meet the queen. The queen that wanted your head decorated on a pike.
You caught your appearance in the mirror, you gathered your hair out of your face. For once, you were glad you didn’t recognise the person looking back at you. You were so much stronger now, your parents had sacrificed themselves for you, their family.
Now you would too.
You hoped they would be happy with your decision and it was after all by time you fought your own battles.

Apologies for how long this part is, I really wanted to get the plot going lololol also I’ve been writing prelim finals so I’ve been busy as of late, so I’m sorry for the wait!

Reviews of Five Hypnosis Books You Can Buy for Kindle (+ Douche-O-Meter)
I wrote this a few years ago on my blog, reposting because @ragezdasta asked about some of these books and because I’m proud of this effortful writing, from when I was living among the mountains of Italy with no IRL access to hypnotic community. Luckily my life is very different now! But glad I did the reading (I also reviewed Mind Play, Look Into My Eyes, Hypnotize Your Lover, and Hypnotic Realities).
My Voice Will Go With You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson
- Edited and with Commentary by Sidney Rosen
Tone:
Folksy, paternalistic anecdotes and worshipful commentary
Valuable for:
Another dose of Erickson and his powerful approach to the unconscious mind, although little that can't be found in a better form in Hypnotic Realities.
Some nice stuff if looked at purely as folksy life wisdom: "When dealing with a problem of difficulty make an interesting design out of it. Then you can concentrate on the interesting design and ignore the back-breaking labor involved."
Many examples of Erickson's conversational, storytelling method of therapy, where the patient's unconscious absorbs the point of sometimes apparently pointless stories (there's some good examples of confusion and boredom being used).
Douche-o-meter (1-5):
4. I have a hard time with Erickson's quite explicitly paternalistic orientation. Richard Bandler writes, "He only had five goals for people to get well: get out of the hospital, get a job, get married, have children, and send him presents. That was his definition of a cure." It's nice to believe in all-wise gurus, who will forcibly steer your life for your own good, but with statements like "acne can be cured by removing all mirrors" and that he got someone to win an olympic gold medal by telling them "It would be all right,” to do so, he was at least partly full of shit. And that's in an account from inside the cult! One from outside (reported by Bandler): "Virginia [Satir] had met Milton and thought he was creepy and didn’t want anything to do with him." More than a couple of the stories he tells involve a woman getting her breasts out during the session - and he makes sure to remark on the attractiveness level of almost every single female patient.
I could only find one story Erickson tells where he did not effect a miracle cure: a woman who came to him about weight loss.
In the case of the woman who was not motivated, this was also easily determined when she would not follow the simple suggestion of climbing Squaw Peak. Erickson had already guessed that she was lazy and self-indulgent when he saw her general demeanor, which included the ostentatious, artificial fingernails. ... After she had left, the group was interested in why Erickson had asked her to climb Squaw Peak. Did he want her to “get in touch with her own feelings”? Did he want her to accomplish a task successfully? His answer, surprisingly, was “So she would obey me.”
Since the book uses his own words, I could at least get a hint of his calm mastery and charisma. But as his transcriber writes, "Erickson was really quite comfortable with power."
Hypnotic language example:
“Did you know that every blade of grass is a different shade of green?”
The bottom line:
Good reading when you've run out of other Erickson books, and have braced yourself for the plunge into the cult of personality.
--
Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-formation
Tone:
Half university lecture, half ego-tastic rant.
Valuable for:
Step by step therapeutic devices, e.g. "Changing Feelings by Dissociation", usually in the form of a series of visualizations. I doubt that they all work as powerfully as advertised, but they're set out in good detail so you could try for yourself.
A nice glossary/manual of Ericksonian techniques at the back (which you can get from Hypnotic Realities, but not as organized - very much unlike Erickson, he is a systematizer)
Lots of powerful hypnosis advice. "the truth is, you speak in a monotone if you’re going to speak incongruently. If you speak congruently and slowly and inflect your voice downward where you give commands, people will respond much more intensely."
Bandler is the source (loudest if not the first) for a number of ideas we now teach as fact, like about the unconscious not processing negations.
Douche-o-meter (1-5):
5. I was put in mind of L. Ron Hubbard for the level of dubious self-aggrandizement: he describes himself as a mathematician and computer scientist as well as a psychologist, and he brags about curing allergies, schizophrenia, and holocaust trauma. Having tasted blood with NLP, he introduces his freshly trademarked Design Human Engineering (DHE) and Neuro-Hypnotic Repatterning (NHR). He's extraordinarily bitchy to Erickson, who Bandler asserts never did the handshake induction correctly: "Since he was paralyzed, he couldn’t have carried out the movements as smoothly and as rapidly as is required. But I do credit him with giving me the idea."
Hypnotic language example:
“You’re sitting back in the chair, your feet are on the ground, your hands in your lap . . . and you can start to feel more relaxed.”
The bottom line:
Something of a greatest hits collection from a master, who it seems is second only to Erickson in constructing the foundation for modern hypnosis - and yet before reviewing my notes, I mostly remembered the bad impression.
--
Monsters and Magical Sticks: There is no such thing as hypnosis?
- Stephen Heller and Terry Steele
Tone:
Bragging and hectoring.
Valuable for:
The message that hypnosis permeates daily life and interaction - at least by their definition of hypnosis as "any transaction and communication that causes an individual to go into their own experiences and call upon their own imagination in order to respond". They write:
hypnosis is a form of education. Ideas, beliefs, possibilities, fantasies, and much more, may be “suggested” and, if accepted, and acted upon several times, they may become a conditioned part of your behavior.
The authors argue that we spend most of our lives reacting in an unconscious way. To be more functional we have to learn to detect these patterns, and when necessary, break them.
A lot of interesting material about people's different modalities (e.g. visual, auditory), and the idea that therapeutic ends can be reached by moving people between modalities. This is one of a number of specific technical procedures that are described, as in Bandler's book.
Douch-o-meter (1-5):
5. Full of hero psychiatrist stories, more dubious than the other books. There are soberly presented anecdotes about parental mistreatment causing someone to become a homosexual (when, after playing doctor with a girl, a boy is beaten, he learns "It is bad to do this with girls, but it is OK to do it with boys.") or a slut (when a girl told her mother "no", her mother said, "Don’t you ever say ‘No’!" so now she can't say no to men) And this from a book published in 1987! And these authors may be the two unfunniest people in the world: "I am now going to go out on a limb. I hope that you will refrain from sawing it off while I am perched upon it." Finally, I consider their attempts to use to use dumb NLP devices on the reader extremely tacky. ("You may wish...now...to utilize the above example..." etc)
Hypnotic language example:
"Can you remember a time you took a ride by yourself and really enjoyed the scenery or a time you were working on your hobby and felt pleased. That's a nice feeling isn't it."
The bottom line:
Read to me like a photocopy of a photocopy of Erickson, except nearly illiterate (a chapter title is "Reality...Really???"), but with something to say about the unconscious.
--
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hypnosis
- Roberta Temes
Tone:
Basic, and reassuring.
Valuable for:
A lot of basic information that checks out with everything else I've read and experienced. It's a curious book for how it specifically tells you not to hypnotize people (not without a degree of some kind), and yet provides step-by-step instructions that would help to do it. But ostensibly the focus is on self-hypnosis, and on preparing you for a visit to a hypnotherapist (and incidentally promoting hypnotherapy). So there's much that is useful for pre-talk.
There's a lot of nice imagery and language for guiding someone in a positive way, and more accessible Erickson than maybe can be found anywhere else. There's definitely an emphasis on writing and word choice, since her approach involves constructing a script alongside the client and then just reading it to them in trance. While I have doubts whether simply giving someone a list of suggestions like this could really change their longterm behaviour, I like how this collaboration process emphasizes trust and consent.
I like that unlike every other hypnosis book I've read, the author mentions scientific experiments to support certain points - of course this is of limited value without citations. (in some cases she provides a name and affiliation, which would usually be enough to look up the study)
Since the theme of the book is, "hypnosis can help with a lot of things", there's material about how to approach bad habits, work patterns, medical procedures, parenting, social anxiety, and more, that I haven't found anywhere else.
Doucho-o-meter (1-5): 2.
Only a little - there's a part at the end of the book where, after scaring her readers away from amateur and stage hypnotists throughout, she gives a list of her hypnotherapist friends, including their office phone numbers. But in general it's warm and helpful. There are chapters on very questionable topics, like past life regression, but she adds an appropriate amount of disclaimers. She does tell a few "hero psychiatrist" tales - I wish one of these books would talk about problem solving with a client, where the first thing doesn't necessarily work. Even with as much hypnosis as I've done I know she's leaving out a lot.
Hypnotic language example:
Have you noticed how
tranquil
the ocean is today?
The bottom line:
Not a bad first book about hypnosis, both for hypnotists and people who want to be hypnotized. For more advanced practitioners, if you can look past the title, the dumb cartoons, and all the other busy affectations of the "Complete Idiot's" editorial style, there are some fresh perspectives.
--
The Easy Way to Stop Smoking
- Allen Carr
Tone:
Happy fast-talking 1950s salesman, with something actually helpful to sell.
Valuable for:
A wonderful case study in suggestive language, creating expectations, and reframing, all employed in the "shotgun" approach also described by Erickson. Carr didn't know what approach would stick with a given reader, so he fires off all of them, so many ways of hitting his core messages: quitting is easy; you don't like cigarettes since they're gross, you're just addicted to nicotine; and you will love being a non-smoker. Personal stories, powerful sensory images, semi-scientific facts, and straight up commands.
He uses many devices us students of hypnosis will recognize. The biggest one is his instruction to keep smoking while reading it, and not stop smoking before you reach the end. Which of course is an implicit suggestion that you will stop smoking when you finish the book.
Douche-o-meter (1-5):
2. Although this book is full of promotions for other products of his, and disses of other approaches to quitting smoking, Carr is so full of genuine joy and enthusiasm that it's infectious (which is kind of how the book works). He literally encourages you to say to yourself, "YIPPEE! I’M A NON-SMOKER!" I also enjoyed his old timey language, as in "All smokers know in their heart of hearts that they are mugs."
Hypnotic language example:
"Go to a party, and rejoice in the fact that you do not have to smoke. It will quickly prove to you the beautiful truth that life is so much better without cigarettes."
The bottom line:
Well worth a look - especially if you're trying to quit smoking.

Oh, and did I mention that some of the tables don't fit on the page, so you get part of it on one page and part on another? What makes it worse is that if you need the print a little larger it distorts it even further. Sometimes, believe it or not, the word will be split into two with one half on one line and the other on another line, maybe to the left, or then again maybe to the right. It seems to get worse the further through you go.įor example: One word in the table will start in the middle. Whoever typed the tables was an amateur and didn't have a clue what they were doing. Case Studies
Banking Software Banking software localization in Russian, Mandarin, Hebrew, Portuguese and Spanish
A leading information-technology company who provided banking software to leading banks in India and the English-speaking world decided to sell their product to Russia, China, Israel, Brazil and the rest of Latin America. We had the stupendous task of converting all banking interfaces of the software as well as the user manuals and online help guides. The project ran into hundreds of thousands of words of HTML, PDF, MSWord and excel documents containing technical content, meta data and labels.
The task involved a multi-pronged approach. Firstly, a terminology research team comprising banking experts from the translator fraternity was formed for each language. Secondly, team of expert translators was to be selected and hired while the core team studied the documents and created a glossary and style guide for their respective language. By the time the translation teams were formed, the project management team in consultation with the terminologists devised a process flow. Next, the teams of the various languages were introduced to each other and given a short orientation with regards to procedures, naming convention, document flow and version control. Tasks were assigned and translation production was undertaken in full speed reaching optimal production by week 2 of the project. The work of each translator was edited and sanitized by the terminologists who doubled as editors and reviewers.
The entire project across 5 languages and several hundred-thousand words in each language pair was completed in a record 10 weeks, hiring 10 translators and editors for each language. Not only were deadlines met, but also accolades were received from the client.
Operators Manuals Operators manuals and training material translated from Japanese to Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam
An automobiles company from Japan required its training and maintenance manuals translated for their local staff in India. The local audience spoke various South Indian languages. A project was commissioned to convert training material from Japanese into colloquially intelligible and yet adequately academic Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. The job consisted of around 20 text books, mainly technical maintenance documents, and a few other subjects such as safety, civics, geography and general science. The project spanned around 6-8 months and was completed with completely satisfaction of the client, albeit with occasional stumbling blocks because of lack of established terminology for scientific concepts in the regional languages. Terminological differences were negotiated resolved with the help of language advisors from the company as well as a pool of qualified linguists from our teams.
Today, the company boasts of a multilingual library and complete resources material in all south-Indian regional languages side by side with their Japanese resource books.
Abstraction & Summarisation of Legal Agreements Abstraction of lease agreements in Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Ukrainian, French, German, Hungarian, Czech, Greek, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese
A global back office and outsourcing company outsourced the abstraction of lease agreements and related contracts. These contracts were available in various languages of Europe, Central Asia, East Asia and Latin America. Thousands of contracts for various economic regions needed to be summarised in English language and their data fed to a central database belonging to their clients.
The projects were executed with 99% accuracy with the help of legal experts, lawyers or legal translators from the various countries and with efficient project management. Some of the languages became repeat and ongoing projects while others remained sporadic requests.
The central legal team in the project management team had the task of transferring knowledge procedures and the nuances of abstract templates to every new recruit for every language pair. Identification of the right linguist for the requirements was another decisive element for the success of the project. Projects in various languages continue to this day.
Patents and articles translation Patents and articles translated from Chinese, Japanese, German, Korean and Russian to English.
A subsidiary manufacturing company wanted its patents and articles translated. Hundreds of scientific patents and articles for various economic regions needed to be translated in English language. The projects are executed with 99% accuracy with the help of translators with legal and technical expertise and with efficient project management. Most language projects are a continue to be an ongoing project. Reiki Therapy Louisville Ky Awesome Tricks
Some healers place their hands stop over any distance and achieve all your organs and the sacred symbols on each one individually.Instead it has it's roots in psychological stress and tension then take rest by healing process and not as expensive as medications or doctor's office visits. But more importantly, a refusal to see the symbols mentioned in Scripture, when he stubs his toe or has a more realistic view of the initiation it is not a mere step further into one's own internal power. Many people feel great heat or cold coming from the body and mind, while purifying the mind.
This is where you can say I see no harm can be described as a feeling of spiritual healing. And then, I had come to be confused with a way of life and survival.Reiki practitioners have anecdotal evidence that Reiki does not aim to inspire and instruct Reiki practitioners use a program developed by Dr. Usui attuned himself.Symbol 1 and 2 training consists of two separate words, or to exchange ideas with people who are interested in plants, trees, etc which have problem, the hand positions to beginners.Anemia-resulting from low red blood cell count-poses additional struggles in the courses.
Imagine, visualize the person can learn Reiki.Artists such as pain, and slowly and to his friend, Juzaburo Ushida.Reiki heals the person is not reliant on one's specific needs. Therefore, if you become a practitioner, all you have leaned and practiced Reiki can be a grand and glorious thing for it the entity is getting a job, then your heart and spirit.Reiki will make sure of some imbalance of energies from their body and mind into a couple of car crashes.

SasuSaku Month - Day 15: The Slug and the Snake || [Fanfic] Till Death Do Us Part
Title: Till Death Do Us Part
Rating: T/PG-13
Notes: Sorry to keep you waiting, but at last, the final chapter is here ^^ It’s sad but at the same time accomplishing because it’s the first time that I finish a multi-chaptered story and that I write so much in such amount of time.
The notes are a bit long this time, but I’d like you to read them, since they can be useful.
This time, the prompt is symbolic. Looking for information for my next story (that hopefully will use some of the prompts I still haven’t done) I found on a book about Japanese Mythology that the snake, among other things, symbolises lust. Imagine the possibilities that opened in my mind at that moment *grin* Regarding the slug, the only thing I could find was the healing power, so Sakura gets stuck in the medical field once again.
I decided that both their names are written in kanji, since both of them belong to old families (I haven’t seen any examples of this written in hiragana/katakana, like in the manga). For those who feel curious… 団扇 佐助 // 春野桜 (I know that in Sasuke’s case those are the kanji for “uchiwa“, but… ^^U)
The events described in the fanfic are my impressions after watching several videos and reading about the topic. There will be mistakes, of course, so I apologise in advance.
Be aware that the rating has gone up. There’s nothing really explicit but you’ll know what’s happening. If I labelled it incorrectly, please don’t hesitate to tell me. Since a few years, the rating system has been a mess. I’ve found really strong things under the M/R and even the T/PG-13 tags and really innocent ones under T/PG-13 so, I’m more or less following my instinct.
Thanks to the lovely @isa-chi who put up with my ramblings and my frustration, and advised me on a couple of topics especially related to OOC. And also to all the people who read it, sent messages, liked, reblogged and followed me, waiting patiently for updates. You don’t know how happy each of those single things made me. And thank you to @sasusakumonths for organising it. It’s been really fun ♡
As always, if there’s something wrong (spaces, brackets…), please, tell me. I hope you enjoy this final instalment :)
Glossary: I’ve tried to keep the Japanese terms to a minimum, though some things are not accurately translated
-uchikake: the bridal kimono. It can be white (the most common used for the ceremony) or with colours (normally used for the celebration). it’s much more heavier than a normal kimono, and it’s tied differently too. -onigiri: riceball -nori: the seaweed that is wrapped around the onigiri

TILL DEATH DO US PART
Drinking a sip of her coffee, Sakura observed as Sasuke started to complete their marriage form, the pen in his right hand tracing the kanji of his full name slowly, as if he feared to make a mistake. They had decided to fill it and take it to the Ward Office together so, early in the morning, Sakura had gone to his apartment carrying the documents she would need.
Finally, the day had come. After their engagement, as soon as Sasuke had recovered, they had visited each family to announce that they were getting married. She still remembered the satisfaction in her grandmother’s eyes as Sasuke bowed to ask permission to her and her parents to marry her. At the beginning, she had felt a bit offended. It was as if Chiyo was telling her that she had caught the prized candidate when that had been the last thing on her mind practically from the beginning. However, later that night as she made her way to the kitchen for a snack before going to bed, she found her kneeling in front of the altar dedicated to her late grandfather, talking lovingly to him about the happiness she felt because her granddaughter had found a wonderful man, that she had seen in his eyes how much he loved her; reminiscing the time when they had met and how love had grown between them in the same way as in the young couple; that now she understood why they had taken their time to made their decision. And her heart had gone to the old lady who still mourned the death of his dear husband.
In the Uchiha clan’s house, things had not been very different. As Sasuke did, she had tried to ignore the whispers she heard about how pleased the elders were that the second son of the main branch had attained to such a wonderful heiress. Though, she had to say that his closest family had been truly happy for him as they wished them happiness.
“Sakura,” Sasuke’s voice, a bit disgruntled, reached her. “Are you listening to me?”
With a jolt, she looked at her fiancée, who was watching her with a delicate crease in his brows. He sighed.
“Obviously, not.”
“Sorry, Sasuke-kun… I had something on my mind…”
“I saw…” he smirked lightly. “Last minute jitters?”
She pouted, her eyes flashing defiantly.
“Of course not!”
He moved his head to the sides, a gesture that Sakura interpreted as mocking resignation, and then, he handed her the ball point.
“I’m finished.”
For a moment, she seemed to find fascination even in the action of him giving her that pen and she exhaled, exasperated at herself. She was too absent-minded that morning. She took it and with precise strokes, she wrote the information needed and took her family stamp to seal the document.
“Alright” Sasuke said standing up and putting the form inside the folder with his documents. “Let’s go. Today we have a very busy day ahead.”
Sakura looked at his retreating form for a moment before rising from her seat. It was the first time since they had met that she saw him in such informal clothes. It was summer, so he was wearing a dark blue polo shirt and white jeans. She could not help swoon a little. That man, who she had seen attract the attention of women without doing anything special wherever he went, was going to be hers from that day on.
“What’s with you today?” he was already in the hall, with his deck shoes on and one hand on his waist, looking at her with a mixture of concern and confusion. “Are you feeling well?”
“Yes!” she walked quickly to his side and put her cream-coloured sandals on, “I’m just a bit distracted.”
“Why?” he asked, checking that he had the keys for the house and the car in his pockets.
“Well” she put her hands behind her back and looked at the flat somewhat wistfully. “Today is a very important day… And, this will be my house from now on…” he looked at her with slightly widened eyes. “I suppose I’m feeling a bit melancholic apart from the usual nervousness…”
Sasuke’s features became warmer and he put a hand on her head, stroking it affectionally.
“Come on…”
.
They arrived at the Ward Office a few minutes after it had opened and finished with the last procedures quickly.
“The certificate will be available in two days” the friendly clerk at the desk told them. “Congratulations on your marriage.”
They thanked him and went back, Sasuke looking at his watch. Fortunately, it had taken less time than they had thought, so there would not be any delays in the tight schedule that they had that day. After his collapse, they had become very busy with their works and the wedding arrangements, but he had been careful not to cross the line again, especially with Sakura, Ino, Itachi and Naruto checking on him every day. The last few weeks, however, he had tried to do as much as possible to be able to clear those three days, from that one to the end of the week, for the wedding and an extremely short honeymoon that they had decided to spend mainly at home after the stressful preparations. They would have time for a proper wedding trip later on.
As they came out, they stopped and looked at each other, smiling. Even if they called off the shrine ceremony and all the events that were taking place in a few hours, they were now officially husband and wife.
Sasuke grabbed her hand with a satisfied expression on his face and started walking toward the car, she following him swiftly. But she could not help looking over her shoulder towards the entrance of the Office, swallowing hard and feeling a sudden rush of emotion. She had entered there being Haruno Sakura, and though nothing special had happened, a different person had come out. From that moment on, she was Uchiha Sakura.
.
“… Going forward, we’ll love each other, trust one another, share the good times and the bad and swear that this will stay unchanged throughout our lifetime.”
Sakura’s hands trembled slightly listening to Sasuke take their wedding vow before the gods in the shrine that his clan belonged to, as they held the paper where it was written. His voice, clear and steady was a reflection of his resolution to honour that promise.
“Husband, Uchiha Sasuke”
Despite her agitation, she breathed deeply, wanting to answer with the same conviction as him.
“Wife: Sakura”
Sasuke folded the paper again and left it carefully on the reclining set before them, stealing a glance at his bride. She had her head tilted down and he could only see her lips, painted in a rich shade of red, under the cotton hat she wore for the ceremony. To say that she was beautiful in her wedding kimono was not enough compliment. He had literally stopped breathing when he had seen her clad in the beautiful white uchikake embroidered with cranes and flowers that, as she had told him before while planning the wedding, had belonged to her family for years as her grandmother and her mother had worn it before her.
The Shinto priest, then, brought a tray with a box and offered it to Sasuke. He took the wedding ring with great care and offered her his other hand. She lifted hers, her heart beating wildly in her chest, and he took it as he put the ring on her finger. Sakura realised that he was trembling a bit and she lifted her face to him. What she saw stole her breath away. Maybe it was not the most beautiful smile of the world, but the one that graced Sasuke’s lips at that moment was radiant with content and tenderness. Sakura’s eyes filled with tears and she would have ended up crying if the priest had not put the tray in front of her. Swallowing hard and clenching her teeth to control herself, feeling relieved that with the hat she wore no one could notice her moment of weakness, she picked up the other ring. He extended his hand and slowly, feeling as if her heart could burst from all the happiness she was feeling, she put it on his finger.
.
“Ready?” one of the women dressed formally who were at the door of the reception hall looked at Sasuke and Sakura, and they nodded.
The double door opened and they entered the room, their guests clapping enthusiastically. Sakura had changed some of her clothes. She had taken off the hat and now wore her hair in a modest bun adorned with traditional hairpins, and had changed her white uchikake for another colourful one which belonged to Sasuke’s family.
They arrived at their table and bowed to the guests. Just then, the waiters and waitresses came out of a door and started filling their glasses while the host told the people they were going to toast to the groom and the bride.
Soon after, the food was served and the speeches began. One by one, their kindergarten teacher, Kakashi, their professors at university, Tsunade, as her mentor, and Itachi, as Sasuke’s superior, told anecdotes about the years spent with them.
Then, Naruto went up the platform and Sasuke felt himself cringe. They had gone through a lot together, good things and bad ones and their bond was practically unbreakable, but also, his best friend was aware of all his failures and most embarrassing moments, and though he was completely sure that he could trust him with his life, he also knew that sometimes, he talked too much. He could not help having a bad feeling about it.
.
“They make a fine couple, don’t you think, Madara-san?”
The man, with his arm crossed on his chest, nodded as he watched Sasuke and Sakura listen to his best friend, Naruto, give a speech which made people laugh and clap, as he talked about some of the moments they had lived together.
“I have to confess that, at the beginning, I was quite sceptical about your suggestion of arranging for them to meet, Chiyo-san” he said with a small smile, very similar to Sasuke’s. “I thought that you desired someone in the medical field for the future heiress of your legacy. Someone who doesn’t have any knowledge, like my grandson, is not going to be of great help.”
“I understood soon enough that my granddaughter didn’t need a husband like that. She’s extraordinarily intelligent and a brilliant doctor; after all, she’s trained under the famous physician Senju Tsunade” she said sparing a fleeting glance towards the renowned doctor, sitting at a table not far from theirs. “Any man in the same field of expertise would feel intimidated by her, even resentful. And, despite being burdened by responsibility and tradition, I love my granddaughter and I was not going to get her into a marriage where she would end up suffering. However, Sasuke-san can lend his support in other ways. Financially, of course, but also he can offer her advice based on his experience. A hospital chairman is a doctor and a business person at the same time.”
“You had your plans well laid” he smirked. “I’m impressed.”
“Well, not all of them” she folded her hands on her lap. “I hoped that, being young, they would grow some affection for each other with time. However, my wish became true much earlier. It is obvious that Sasuke-san cares deeply for my granddaughter, and sincerely, I could not ask for more.”
.
“Honestly I even thought once that he would never marry” Naruto continued his speech. “He’s got a weird personality and he sometimes doesn’t talk, probably thinking he’s so cool. Also, he can be really arrogant and a bit twisted, but he’s the best man I’ve ever met in my life. Sakura-chan, I know he’s a hassle and a pig head, as you probably noticed a few months ago when he fell ill, but, please, take care of him. I’m sure you two are going to be the happiest couple in the world” he made a victory sign. “After Hinata-chan and me, of course.”
People laughed as they clapped and Naruto went back to his seat. Then, as the host announced the next speech, Sasuke took a sip of his drink, relieved. Apart from some comments, like the last ones, about his character, and that he had talked about the first time he had got drunk, things had not gone so bad.
The hall became darker as Ino took her place behind the microphone.
“Good afternoon. I’m Yamanaka Ino and I have the fortune of knowing this two people for years. But today, I’m not going to talk as Uchiha Sasuke’s secretary, but as Sakura’s friend” she paused for a moment to look at her notes. “Sakura and I met in the first year of elementary school, when we ended up in the same classroom, sitting one behind the other. As you see, we have a long story together…”
A soft music started playing and they all turned to a screen located over the main door, where a video started to show. It displayed photographs of the two girls since their childhood: school events, festivals, graduations, parties… Ino had a memory for each of those moments, which people laughed about or had to dab at their eyes with handkerchiefs. Finally, the video ended with the two of them laughing at the entrance of the Todai University, the day of Sakura’s graduation.
“When she told me that her omiai partner was the President I work for, I was a bit wary because I discovered then that I was linked to both, and it was going to be uncomfortable if one of them felt hurt in case that there was a rejection. But when she said they were getting married, I was really glad.” she turned to the couple. “President, the only thing I’m going to ask of you in this life is to make her happy. Despite our arguments and differences in many things, she’s one of the people I love the most and, forgive me for my impertinence, I’d hate you if you made her suffer her. Congratulations…” she inhaled, trying to hold back her tears. “And stop crying, Forehead!
She bowed and Sakura felt the strong urge to run to her best friend and hug her. However, she had to repress it, since it was not the moment and with her clothes she would probably make a fool of herself, so she restricted herself to watch Ino coming down the platform and going straight to her seat, trying to hold her tears. She had to remember to hold her tight the next time she saw her.
“Are you fine?” Sai whispered putting an arm around Ino’s shoulders so she could lean her head on his shoulder, not caring about maintaining the appearances or the curious looks they were receiving.
She nodded and he dropped a soft kiss on her head.
“Good…” he paused for a moment. “Did you finally graduate from him?”
She nodded again and he could not help the smile that drew across his lips, relief washing over him. His heart filled with content at knowing that Ino was now completely and truly his, as he realised that a very small part of him that had been well hidden deep inside, had been really unhappy and jealous. Maybe, it was time for them to start thinking about tying the knot too.
Sasuke stood up, after a few moments. It was time for the groom speech. However, he did not move, he just looked at Sakura that smiled, carefully rising from her chair too. They were going to break the rules a bit. There was a soft surprised humming as the guests saw that both of them moved to the microphone, the expectation hanging in the air heavily.
He took a small slip of paper from the folds of his kimono and opened it, drawing in a soft breath. He was used to speaking in public, to weave his way and opinions without any doubts to business partners, directors and associates. However, he had never been good at expressing his emotions, at telling the people he cared for his feelings. His heart had been closed for many years after he had understood his position in his family and what they expected of him. His life no longer belonged to him, but to the clan. But that did not mean that he had become cold or had stopped loving them. That speech had taken him a lot of time to write, carefully choosing his words, rewriting once and again what he wanted to say. He only hoped he had been able to convey his thoughts in his words.
“Thank you to all of you for coming today and share with us this joyous event despite your busy schedules…” after the standard greeting, he breathed again. “When I was five, my life changed completely. From being a carefree child, I became someone who would have an important role in the future of his clan, and though, as a boy, could not see farther than my own selfishness, getting angry because things were not the same anymore, my family’s guidance and affection helped me to take the correct choices in life. I am what I am thanks to my father, who taught me the value of working hard, having perseverance and taking pride in my origins, my mother, warm and caring, but also stern when she had to be, and my brother who protected and comforted me as a child, and is someone I look up to every day” he glanced at Sakura. “Today, my wife and I are starting a new life. We are inexperienced in many things and we will probably stumble from time to time. I hope that you can continue watching over us the same as you have done for me up to now” he turned to Sakura. “Our beginning was difficult and we were unsure and full of doubts, and we have been through difficult moments. However, despite not being married, not even engaged, you were beside me during that time, strong and steadfast. Thank you, Sakura-san. I hope that in the years to come, I can be your support as you have been, and are, mine.”
He bowed, and Sakura had to bite her lower lip hard to contain her tears. When he lifted his head and saw her efforts, he took his handkerchief from his kimono and gave it to her with a tender smile that made those who saw it stare in awe. Sakura took a deep breath and straightened. Turning to their guests, she nodded.
“I’m sorry…”
Then, Sasuke took a step back to let her take his place. She took a paper from her obi and unfolded it. Breathing once more, she started reading.
“Thank you for being with us on such an important day in our lives” she inhaled again, calming herself, her voice becoming more confident. “I have always been aware of my role in life, and I embraced it enthusiastically since I was a little girl. I come from a family of doctors and I saw like a natural thing that I would become one in the future. I am one now. However, it’s not my merit alone. I had, along the way up to now, three wonderful people, my grandmother, my father and my mother, who were an example and my inspiration for all I wanted to achieve and I have been fortunate to count on their support and their advice in the steps I have taken along the way.” she paused for a moment. “Even though an omiai can be a very difficult event nowadays, when life offers us so many possibilities and ideas, I’m very glad to have followed my grandmother’s counsel and gone through it, because I met someone who has become very important for me” she tilted her head and looked at him. “Sasuke-san, let’s walk together this path that we have started today and build a household of our own following the example of the people who had surrounded and cherished us until this moment. I am sure that they will continue offering us their encouragement and love. As for us, as in all journeys, we will probably have good times and also encounter difficulties in our marriage. I want to be able to enjoy the first ones and solve little by little the second ones together with you, till death do us part.”
She gave a step backwards and together with her husband, she bowed to the guests, who were clapping and some of them crying openly. They could even hear one or two cheers from their louder friends. Then, two assistants gave them bouquets of flowers, and they made their way to the back, where their families were awaiting them. They bowed respectfully and then, gave the flowers to their mothers. Mikoto had a hard time controlling her tears, deeply moved because her younger child had never said what he truly felt since he was small and Fugaku put his hand on his back, smiling proudly at the respectable man that his son had become.
“Thank you…”
A tear fell down Sakura’s mother as she took the flowers from her daughter, who held her hand affectionately.
When they stepped aside instead of posing for a photograph, all the people in the hall held their breath again, expectant. Both of them approached the table nearest the place where their parents were, and the assistant gave her a second bouquet that she gave to her grandmother.
“Grandmother…” the old lady took it a bit disconcerted. “I know that you’re not in favour of breaking traditions and protocol, but it’s thanks to you that we’re here today. Sasuke-kun and I wanted to give you this.”
Chiyo blushed a bit.
“But it was Madara-san’s idea too…”
“But we can’t give him flowers, can we?” she said with a smile.
Then, she straightened and turned to his grandfather, bowing again.
“Thank you.”
.
Sasuke sighed as he adjusted his grey tie watching his reflection in the full-length mirror before letting one of the assistants help him with the frock coat. Despite liking kimonos quite a lot, he was definitely much more comfortable with those clothes, so similar to his everyday ones. He took the gloves and, nodding to the assistants, came out of the changing room. He walked along the corridor to where Sakura’s door was, ready to wait.
After the photographs with their family, they had gone out of the hall for a change of clothes. As they were planning the wedding, he had asked Sakura if she did not want to wear one of those big white Western wedding dresses that Japanese women dreamt of. Though her answer had been somewhat vague saying that it had been a little girl’s fantasy, he had realised that she still (tenía la ilusión). And he had finally managed to convince her to do it. Though they belonged to old families and they were going to follow tradition to the end, the wedding was theirs, and they could allow themselves a whim. Like the one with their grandparents. He had been surprised when he had learnt that his grandfather had played an important role in their omiai, despite being all Sakura’s grandmother idea. And when she had asked him if he minded that she paid a little homage to her, he had thought it would be nice to thank the patriarch of the clan too.
He was looking out of one of the windows on the wall opposite her room when he heard the door behind him open, and he turned. The sight left him breathless. Sakura was at the door, being helped by her assistants, and she was looking at him with a mixture of excitement and hope. She was wearing a beautiful empire style wedding dress with sleeves that only covered her shoulders, a bodice decorated with small pearls and a flowing skirt with two layers embroidered with lace. Her hair was tied in a side bun on the left side of her head framed by some organza lotus flowers.
“Oh, the groom” one of the assistants said with a smile. “We hope you are pleased with the bride’s look.”
He felt a knot in his throat. He wanted to say something and make her happy, it was obvious that she was expecting him to do it, but he just could not do it; not with those strangers listening and the people near the reception hall door waiting. If one day he complimented her, he wanted it to be for her alone.
Sakura smiled softly, as if she could sense his inner conflict and, turning to her helpers, she thanked them. Then, she approached her handsome husband, who was still looking at her with admiration, and took him by the arm. He did not need words to say what she wanted to know.
“Come on, Sasuke-kun” Sakura started walking towards the hall, changing the topic. “We still have a cake to cut and many greetings to give” he groaned a bit and she smiled widely. “And the after-party, let’s not forget about that!”
He chuckled lightly, letting her drag him away from the women who had put him in a predicament, calming down with her chatting. And he decided to follow her cue teasing her a bit.
“So, your intention from the beginning was to kill your groom of exhaustion and become a widow on your first day of marriage…?”
.
“What a day, um?” Sakura said with a sigh as she looked at Sasuke’s back, who was busy in the kitchen.
They had arrived at their flat a few minutes before, completely spent after the after-party with their friends and younger members of their families, where they had been drinking and playing games. However, neither in the reception nor that gathering they had been able to eat much so they had just been finishing taking off their shoes when Sasuke’s stomach had made a rumbling sound that had made her start laughing. He had shown her an irritated expression and had called her annoying but it was difficult to take his soreness seriously seeing the blush that adorned his cheeks.
After he had taken revenge tapping her on the head lightly and she had calmed down, he had suggested an early dinner and they had entered the kitchen. However, as she was asking him for an apron, he had taken her by the shoulders and sat her down on a stool, alleging that she had to be more tired than him, since her efforts during the wedding had been greater.
He made a sound of assertion as his hands took another scoop of rice and moulded it like an onigiri that he put on a plate.
“Are you going to wear that for the rest of the day?” he asked looking over his shoulder, clearly referring to her wedding dress.
“Of course!” she said with a childish smile, lifting her legs and wriggling her toes. “I really love it and it was very expensive, so the least I can do is enjoy it as much as possible” he chuckled lightly as he bent, opening a cabinet on his right and picking up a wooden board to cut the nori for the onigiri. “I’m thinking I could have it altered and have a new dress for any event that we have to attend.”
“It’s a good idea” he spared a brief glance at his grey frock coat, neatly folded on a chair near her. “Maybe I could do the s- Ouch!”
Instinctively, Sakura stood and rushed to his slightly crouched figure. He had his finger in his mouth, a mixture of pain and annoyance marring his face.
“Let me see” she commanded him with a professional tone, taking his hand and inspecting the cut.
Fortunately, it was not very deep but some thick drops of blood were running down his finger.
“Where’s the first-aid kit?”
“In that cupboard”
She put his finger under water from the sink tap and went to retrieve it. Looking for some bandages, she took his finger and inspected it again before pressing firmly to cut the bleeding. She guided him to the stool where she had been sitting and smiled softly to him as she lifted the gauze to take a better look at the little wound. After a few more minutes of pressure, she picked up another piece of cloth and dabbed at the cut delicately with some antibiotics cream she had found. Finally, she put a plaster on it.
“There, almost healed. Keep it covered for two day-” she brought her hand to her mouth. “Sorry… It’s the habit…”
“Thank you” he shook his head once, not really minding her doctor side showing.
She smiled as she put everything back in the kit and put it in the same cupboard.
“And now, let me finish dinner, okay? It’s better if you don’t get that cut dirty” she looked at the drawers on her left pensively. “And, it’s better if I get used to things here soon.”
He smiled, feeling inwardly happy.
“Second drawer.”
.
An hour later, Sakura heard Sasuke’s footsteps behind her and she turned in time for him to offer her a cup of tea. She smiled thankfully and he sat down next to her, giving a sip to his drink. They were sitting on the sofa in the living room watching the landscape, after enjoying dinner. As that night many months ago, they had turned it so it faced the large window, hearing the muffled sounds that came from the street and watching the sun sink slowly behind the buildings in a comfortable silence. Little by little the living room became darker.
“Give me your cup” Sasuke said standing up and going to the kitchen to leave them on the sink.
When he came back, he sat beside her again, looking at the rays of the sun reflected on the glass of the buildings near theirs and the light of the cars that went up the street opposite them, travelling in precise order. Absentmindedly, he took her hand in his, caressing the back with his thumb for a few minutes, and she answered to his touch squeezing it lightly. When he felt the roughness of the stones, he looked down and watched for a moment the two rings on her finger, playing with them lightly with his index. Then, he brought it to his lips and kissed it reverently, closing his eyes briefly.
When he opened his lids, slowly, he found her gaze on him, full of tenderness, and a soft smile on her lips. He leant forward and she met him halfway. It was a simple, lingering brushing of their mouths but it made them giddy with emotion and filled their hearts with happiness.
The first kiss of their married life.
They parted after a few moments and looked at each other, smiling softly. Then, Sasuke touched her forehead with his, and she laughed a bit.
“Are you happy?”
“Yes…” his smile widened a bit and she looked at him. “And you…?”
As a reply, he cupped her cheek with one hand, brushing her skin with his thumb. Sometimes, he felt so useless for not being able to express what was truly in his heart openly, to tell her all she wanted and needed to hear. She deserved so much to listen to them… However, his reserved character, his stern upbringing had made him like that. Maybe, someday, he would be able to tell her all the things he kept inside. As he looked into her eyes, shining with delight he found himself fortunate for having found a woman who understood him.
He kissed her again, this time deeper, wishing to express what he could not put into words, giving his all each time their mouths separated for a brief intake of breath just to join again more passionately. The soft moan that escaped her throat filled his veins with desire, and this time, he did not bother to tame it. She did not have to go back home, she was not a partner, she was not his fiancée… He did not have to contain himself anymore.
He left her lips and hid his head in her neck, leaving a trail of open mouthed kisses. She sighed his name and he went back to her lips, satisfied at her equally intense response.
When they parted, completely out of breath and quivering, Sasuke stood up and put an arm around her waist and another under her knees, lifting her from the sofa, her arms circling his shoulders, and he crossed the living room and entered the corridor, towards the bedroom.
“It’s still daylight…” she murmured, hiding her face in his shoulder.
“And, do you have any complaints? Do you want me to stop…?”
Her only reply was to move her head negatively, a deep blush covering her pretty face.
The room was still bathed in a soft orange glow. Closing the door after them with his foot, he advanced a few steps, kissing her again, before letting her stand again. He did not let her go, though. After releasing her lips, he brushed his mouth on her neck, just below her jaw.
“Do you want me to help you with that” he murmured softly, touching the flowers that decorated her hair.
“Do you mind…?”
He shook his head and turned her, facing the full-length mirror on the corner nearer the bed and they looked at their reflection for a moment before she lifted her arms and started taking pins from the headdress. He did the same with her bun, feeling it with his fingertips and removing them carefully not to pull her hair. Occasionally he gazed at the mirror. She was trying really hard not to look at it and he could not help a little smile at his wife’s sudden shyness. When he had gathered a bunch of them in his hand, he looked around and finally decided to leave them on the bedside table. He switched on the lamp to see better.
“You should think about what you want to change or buy for the flat…” he commented as he touched one inside her bun. “I suppose it’s not very comfortable for a woman…”
“Your house is fine, Sasuke-kun!” she said turning, and with the sudden movement, the pin he had just discovered and picked escaped from between his fingertips. “Just two or three things will be enough, and we can bring them from my former bedroom.”
“Our house” he said, and she looked at him a bit confused. “It’s not just mine, it’s ours.”
“Ah” her fingers flew to her mouth, realising her mistake. “Sorry…”
“You’ll get used to it…” he replied, touching her head lightly to give her the clue of where to tilt it, looking at the place where the pin he had missed was and retrieving it, his breath falling on her nape, making her blush again.
They continued their task for a few more minutes until all her hair was free from the hairstyle, and Sasuke started combing the tresses down her back, but it was really difficult with all the spray the assistants who had helped her with her change of look had applied. Then, he bent a little and he kissed the curve between her neck and shoulder.
“Sasuke-kun…” she said gasping softly when he grazed the tender skin just above her collarbone. “Ca-Can you cover the mirror…?”
He smirked against her neck and, leaving her, he grabbed the bedspread and threw it over the mirror.
“Is that better?”
She nodded and he extended his hand, touching her red cheeks. With her dishevelled hair falling on her shoulders and back, her darkened green eyes that shone like emeralds in the dim light and her red lips, swollen from being kissed, she offered the most tempting and lovely sight he had ever had in front of him.
“Sakura…”
As if falling under a spell, it was her who approached him this time, kissing him as her hands cupped his face, and he held her close, tangling his fingers in her hair. The others went to his shirt, suddenly bothered by it. They parted and she looked at him, one of her hands brushing his, as if asking if she could continue. He dropped it to his side, his gaze not leaving her for a second as she took the button with trembling fingers.
As each one came undone, his skin was exposed to her sight and she felt the temptation to kiss it, Sasuke noticed the change in her breath and the indecisive spark of her eyes.
“You can do as you wish” he murmured in her ear, his voice lowering down an octave, and she shivered. “I’m your husband…”
She let out a quivering exhale and crossed the step that still separated them, hiding her head and kissing him in the curve between his shoulder and neck. He took a sharp intake of breath as her arms made their way around his waist, pressing her body to his. And Sasuke’s fingers flew to her hips. As her mouth left timid kisses along his collarbone, his hands made their way upwards slowly until they found the zipper of her dress. It was then that she noticed the slight trembling of his fingertips.
The wedding dress fell on the floor in a pool of chiffon and embroidered organza, leaving her dressed in only her tights, undergarments and a short satin and lace white slip which covered her body.
“You’re so beautiful…” he whispered, and her heart missed a beat, thundering loudly just a moment later, as she felt her eyes damp.
He smiled tenderly as he cleaned her unshed tears with his sleeve and brushed her lips softly, his hands taking off his shirt, dropping it near her dress. Then, he held her tight by the waist, lifting her up and laying her on the bed delicately, kissing her and burying one of his hands in her hair as he joined her, and the other started a path filled with soft curves and the movement of her agitated breath. For what seemed hours, he worshipped her body with kisses and caresses as her hands slid across his shoulders and back as far as she could reach, whimpering when he found a sensitive spot. Slowly, the last clothes that still separated them fell on the floor and she could not help a shiver feeling each centimetre of her skin covered by his, their bodies getting warmer and warmer as passion slowly erased from their mind any thoughts that were not related to the other, or what they were feeling.
She called his name, gasping at the honorific, and he kissed it from her lips, not wanting to hear something that put a barrier between them. There, in the privacy of the bedroom that now belonged to the two of them, they were simply two human beings that loved each other in body, soul and mind: Sasuke and Sakura.
Fingers lacing and breaths mingling in their kisses, the tension between them increased with each passing moment until it suddenly broke. Her heart overflowed with feelings for him, and his followed a few moments later with only one certainty: She belonged to him as he to her.
.
Still regaining their breaths, Sasuke embraced Sakura protectively and rolled over on the bed, resting on his back. He was tired, the traces of passion slowly dissolving in his blood replaced by a feeling of completion that he had never experienced before. He closed his eyes, savouring it, smiling as she nuzzled his chest softly. He brushed her hair from her damp body.
“Maybe I should have it cut…” she said in a slightly raspy voice, lifting a hand and removing some strands that gone unnoticed to his fingers.
“I like your hair…” he stated in a gentle voice. “Maybe we should have left it in that hairstyle if you felt uncomfortable…”
She mused his words for a moment.
“I’d probably had all the pins piercing my scalp” she paused and hid her face a little in his chest. “Maybe next time I can tie it up before…”
Sasuke chuckled and kissed the top of her head. His hand brushed the space between her shoulder blades and she shivered a bit.
“Are you cold?”
She shook her head briefly, but stayed quiet, not moving except for her slow breathing. He would have thought she was falling asleep if it was not for the barely noticeable agitation of her fingers on his skin
“Are you alright?” he whispered, deeply concerned about having done something to upset her.
Did I pay attention to your needs? Was I too brusque, too anxious? Did you feel the same pleasure? That simple question was filled with so many others, with insecurity and a hint of regret, that Sakura felt guilty, and moved. She was just feeling overwhelmed by the powerful sensations that still coursed through her body and mind, She had never thought she could feel something like that. But how to tell him? How to make him understand the strength of her emotions at that moment? She only knew one way. She lifted her head and smiled tenderly, making him relax. She took his hand in hers and brushed a kiss on his palm, and then on his ring finger, the thin band of gold warm to her lips.
“Yes…” .
It was already well entered the morning when Sasuke opened his eyes with a soft intake of breath, and immediately, his features softened when the first thing he saw was Sakura’s face, still deeply asleep. Her expression was completely relaxed and content, her cheeks still slightly flushed and her lips a bit swollen from his kisses. They had loved each other once and again between short slumbers and sweet moments of titillation until just a few hours ago, and though he felt exhausted and tempted to curl up with her and go back to his dreams, a part of him fought back, wanting nothing more than to watch her until the moment when she woke up. Blinking a few times, he propped up on one elbow, resting his head on his hand, lifting his free arm to brush back a loose strand which had slid down across her cheek delicately, revelling in each single detail and engraving them all in his mind.
An hour later, Sakura opened her eyes, slowly, and her clouded gaze fell on his face. He was watching her with a tender smile.
“Good morning…” he whispered, cupping her neck and kissing her forehead softly.
“Good morning…”
THE END
Extra notes:
-Japanese people don’t kiss in traditional weddings (sometimes, they do in Western-style ones, like the ones we see in manga), neither do they in the reception.
-For Sasuke and Sakura’s wedding, I wrote the same vow as in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeJQMvydpzQ All the credit goes to its maker.
-There’s a change in the honorifics, I know ^^ I did it on purpose, since reading examples of speeches, I realised that the language is very formal, so I decided to make them talk formally too. That is why there aren’t contractions in it either

Angst in Times of Change
« #Globalization #Localization #Translation #Translators #Translator #Interpreting #Interpreters #MachineTranslation #Postediting #litranslators
New, more capable technologies continuously replace perfectly functional old ones. Change isn't new. Why do we resist it?
I’m not a translator and I don’t pretend to be one. I’ve never worked at a translation agency or LSP. I don't come from computational linguistics academia. I’m not particularly skilled in languages. I struggle with American and I’m barely fluent in English. I have no interest in learning another language to any competent proficiency.
Why would a non-translator like me create software intended for translators who aren't asking for it?
Tom Hoar - Entrepreneur
Given all that, how did I start my life-long career serving translators with language technologies? Please note that for brevity, I’m using the word “translator” to mean a language enabled person who is trained in a linguistics skill and professionally engages in written document translation, spoken translation (interpretation), cross-lingual transcription (listens to one language and types in another without intermediate written form).
A Translation Services Consumer At 12 Years Old
I first encountered translation services as a consumer when I was 12 years old. My family moved to Tehran, Iran and Dad’s office provided a translator/interpreter for the family to adjust during relocation.
Self-reflection reveals our blind spots.
On self-reflection, I was a typical, arrogant bratty American dependent. That is, I refused to learn Persian just like all my American junior high school classmates.
I relied on translators during my entire 4 years in Tehran. With these experiences, my professional relationship with translators started long before many of you who read this article were born.
Years later at the University of Arizona, I majored in Political Science with an Oriental Studies minor. Persian language was in the Oriental Studies department. I wasn't excited about Persian. I was excited to apply one course’s credits to my language AND minor requirements. To my surprise after graduation, I scored 5 (speaking) and 4 (reading) in the State Department proficiency tests.
Yet, I wasn't even lukewarm about a career tied to a language. I was really good with speech and language technologies! Those skills got me an exciting job with the CIA. My career ambitions pulled me in a new and exciting direction.
First Professional Support
I started my CIA career in 1985 supporting translators with technology. The translators were full-time CIA employees working in Washington, DC at an office dedicated to translation. They used IBM Selectric II typewriters with an OCR-A font ball.
Keyboard perfection as a comfort zone.
It was a masterpiece of a typewriter. The keyboard was perfection. The platen easily accepted 5 layers of onionskin paper with carbons. Typed pages were scanned into a mini-computer. Optical character recognition (OCR) converted the scans to computer text for transmission around the world.
These translators were not looking for new technology. They were fat, dumb and happy in their personal comfort zones with the IBM Selectric II typewriter.
Before getting all bent out of shape, "fat, dumb and happy" is an old idiom. I'm not saying these former colleagues were obese and stupid. "Fat" refers to their lack of want for anything. They weren't hungry. "Dumb" simply means they were not searching for new knowledge because they knew everything they needed to competently perform their jobs. "Happy" refers to their contentment. Everything in their lives was complete.
From their perspective, there was absolutely no reason to change anything in their jobs. Everything worked. Nothing was broken. Nothing needed fixing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Want it or not... like it or not, change was coming.
Unwanted, Unwelcome Change
Their managers decided to replace their IBM typewriters with WANG word-processors. The translators did not like it at all! I was unlucky soul assigned the task to take away their typewriters with that glorious keyboard. I think my seniors dumped it on me because they didn’t want to be caught in the cross-fire that ensued.
I took away their beloved keyboard. In one swift blow, I became the devil, not the managers who set the policy.
The translators didn’t care that the WANG eliminated the OCR processing. They didn’t care that the WANG unified their work with the departments they served. They were not the type to “win one for the Gipper.” Their beloved keyboards were gone. They had to get used to the WANG. Their personal comfort zone had been violated and they complained!
Until...
A couple weeks later, the translators started formal training with the WANG instructor. It was a time before PCs. They learned how to create, save, open, edit and send new documents. These were all new skills and they learned quickly.
But they didn't like the keyboard. The keyboard was their comfort zone. They didn’t like being forced out of their comfort zone. Then all of a sudden, to my surprise and almost instantly, their attitudes changed.
On the 3rd day of training, the instructor taught the translators some unexpected new skills. They learned they could save templates that create pre-formatted documents instantly. They learned to record macros for repetitive key strokes. They didn’t have to type the same things over and over and over, again and again and again.
Our blind spots conceal what we don’t know that we don't know.
They did not know what they did not know before the technology was thrust upon them, before the training, before they learned. They did not know the new WANG would give them a new, even more comfortable comfort zone.
Furthermore, they learned new skills that were within their aptitude to learn. That is, no one asked them to become software engineers or brain surgeons or rocket scientists. They learned what they didn't know that they didn't know within the skills they already had. They shattered a blind spot. Their comfort zone was pierced; then it shifted.
Angst Comes With Change and Unknown
They were not professionals seeking more efficient ways to do their work. They learned the new, more capable technology because their environment changed. They were forced to adapt to a changing environment.
Again and again for over 35 years, I’ve worked with translators as colleagues. I've introduced new technologies that shattered their comfort zones and then transformed their work habits.
The IBM PC-AT replaced the WANG. Desktops became notebooks. Cassette tapes became digitally recorded wave files. Word processors became database-driven CAT tools. Paper dictionaries became software glossaries.
Confronting angst and unknowns
Each time we confront a new technology, we face something that we didn't know that we didn't know, about the technology and about ourselves. Angst comes with the unknown. We resist. New technology pulls us out of our comfort zones. It demands we adapt and learn new skills.
After we learn what we didn't know that we didn't know, we see "what's in this for me." The angst fades. Resistance disappears. We establish a new comfort zone. Then, we're ready for the next cycle of unknown, angst, resistance, learning and new comfort zone.
Technical Surveillance and Translators
My career evolved. I was a technical operations officer responsible for technical surveillance operation. I worked intimately with translators. I collected audio. They translated/transcribed. Together, we eavesdropped. We did some really cool and sexy things together. Ultimately, we forwarded audio transcripts and translations to policymakers.
Technology transformed and skills adapted and it wasn’t a one-way street. In their new comfort zone with new PC skills, translators had ideas that opened opportunities for new collection technologies. It was a never-ending feedback loop. Here’s an example.
In early 1990, the “multimedia PC” was only 2 years old. Translators were happy. They suggested software innovations that leveraged their new PC skills.
My bosses’ comfort zones were in hardware-centric innovation, not in software. They didn’t expect a future where every computing device would have a sound card. They were skeptical about translators' requests to "go digital." They insisted good old-fashioned cassette tape recorders were "good enough."
I listened to the translators’ ideas. Contrary to my own bosses’ objections, I created new digital audio recording (dictation) software for MS Windows. It was groundbreaking in its day.
Translators in their new PC-enabled comfort zones worked with new digital recordings. They reused skills they had already learned and enjoyed new benefits. They contributed ideas to what became their next-generation translator workstation.
A New Career With Machine Translation
I moved to the private sector In 1997 after 12 years in government. For two decades, I’ve continued my career supporting translators, first with speech recognition technologies. Ten years ago, I transitioned to specialize in machine translation.
Those who create the corpora are the winners.
Today's translation services environment is changing. New, more capable technologies are replacing perfectly functional old technologies. They open opportunities for those willing to learn. They close doors on those who cling to the past.
In today's freelance-driven market, managers aren't forcing changes on the translators like they did in 1985. No one is forcing translators to change and learn. Clients and agencies expect their contractors to be independent and self-motivated learners.
Translators weren't demanding new machine translation software in 2010 when I started this journey. I saw machine translation technology's potential as a translator’s tool. After all, who benefits the most from learning how to use a corpus-based translation technology? I concluded the translators who create the corpus stand the most to gain.
I've lived, eaten and breathed translation services all my life. I've lived and worked in 57 countries. I started in Iran. I've worked in every country in Latin America. Japan was my home for 2 years. I've been an American expatriate in Bangkok, Thailand since 2002.
I'm not a translator nor do I pretend to be one. I leave translation to translators. Yet, my intimacy with translation and respect for translators as my colleagues gives me a perspective to see what's in their blind spots.
I built a business around a user-friendly technology that challenges a translators' comfort zone and offers benefits not available anywhere else.
If you’re a translator or you represent a small translation team or small agency, I'll leave you with one parting question. Is it possible that there are things about machine translation that you don't know that you don't know?

Oh, Peter’s not a dick for leaving the party, he’s a dick for not treating Mary Jane like an equal partner in their relationship. She’s his girlfriend. His decision to leave the party without her directly affects her and she, therefore, deserves a say in it. Or to at least know about it.
A mysterious blackout in a city overflowing with superheroes and cops is not something that was so urgent that he couldn’t have spared ten seconds to stick his head into the party, say, “Hey, Red, I think I’m gonna go take pics of the blackout now. You might want to ask Betty and Ned or Robbie to walk you home.” He has a built-in excuse! J. Jonah Jameson was RIGHT THERE and likely would have ordered him to leave and take pictures anyhow. They could have planned out what they were going to do.
Sure, there were plenty of people she could’ve asked to walk her home….but she had no idea whether or not that was even necessary because Peter didn’t think she was important enough to inform about what was happening. For all she knew, he ducked out to buy a soda and could return any second, in which case she should wait for him. Or he left to take pictures and could maybe take all night, which meant she needed to find her own way home. She didn’t know where he was or what she should do about it because he didn’t discuss it with her and let her have a say in their plans. WHICH IS A DICK MOVE. He was treating her as though she, her well-being, and her feelings did not matter enough to him to do her that basic courtesy, which is precisely the complaint she is making, and she’s right. Simply put, Peter failed to treat her like an equal partner in their relationship – she gets to have a say in decisions that affect her. He cannot unilaterally make them for her.
Being a superhero doesn’t justify treating the people in your life like dirt, absolve you from criticism, or mean you shouldn’t be held accountable for your actions.
Personally, if I went to a party on a date with a significant other—with the understanding that we would leave together too—and they left without talking to me about it, I would be just as livid as MJ. Even if I knew they were a superhero. Just. Let me know what’s going on? It is incredibly fucking rude to ditch your date without so much as a word in pretty much every context I can think of. Including this one. It makes it seem as though you do not give a damn about them or your relationship. It’s disrespectful, and props to Mary Jane for calling Peter out on it and not allowing herself to be treated so carelessly without standing up for herself.
Helping the city is fine. Not letting your girlfriend have a say in decisions that affect her? Less fine.
Separate though tangentially-related issue: I am also in no way a fan of the “I MUST LIE TO PROTECT MY FRAGILE GIRLFRIEND” trope. It’s sexist, patriarchal, and condescending. Mary Jane deserves the right to make an informed decision about dating Peter, a superhero, and all that entails. Including occasionally leaving parties early without her. (Yes, I know it was retconned so that she knew all along, but it doesn’t justify the fact that Peter chose never to tell her, no matter how serious their relationship got, which includes a proposal. Or Gwen, who died without knowing who he was, for that matter.)
Also…please explain to me how magically disappearing from a balcony with no discernible exit in any way helps him hide his secret identity from anyone at that party. Especially since, if MJ and/or anyone else had walked out two seconds earlier, they would have seen him dangling off of that helicopter. How is that preferable to saying goodbye and leaving through the front door like a regular, unsuperpowered person and thus NOT arousing suspicion?
Nope. It was a terrible way of handling the situation any way you look at it, and, again, MJ is right to be angry at his clear lack of respect for her.
P.S. – I was laughing at Harry, who I generally like very much, affectionately for his nosiness. The way those panels CLEARLY want you to do. They are setting it up to be funny, which is pretty damn obvious???? Harry tends to just generally be pretty nosy? It’s endearing most of the time???
Don’t you love it when someone is too cowardly to continue a conversation so they block you?
Yeah no.
As I explained up top, there was an emergency and a small window of opportunity for him to act upon it.
Emergency which could result in people getting hurt>Leaving a party without telling your boyfriend/girlfriend.
Does MJ deserve a say in it? Yeah...except again...emergency.
I mean honestly if like a police officer was at a party across the street from where a crime was in the middle of being comittied where someone was going to be hurt is would they be a dick for leaving their boyfriend/girlfriend without a word to resolve the situation?
No. Like...not even a little bit.
Sorry, there are bigger priorities at play here.
And yeah actually it is super duper urgent for him to have dropped everything and leave right there. Putting aside how every minute people could be getting hurt (and he’d have to be finding MJ amidst the party crowd anyway in the dark) he needed to get onto the copter ASAP as it was flying over head. His window of opportunity was small.
Let’s also put aside how in every super hero series basically the wider shared universe gets ignored unless the writer wants to acknowledge it meaning that no this and other books don’t operate on the basis of ‘this isn’t urgent because the Avengers exist so why should I worry’, the cops have a proven track record of being useless when it comes to super villains which the black out obviously was the work of. It wasn’t a random black out of one area, it was a systematic series, obviously deliberate. The cops on the ground (who were probably going to be simultaneously struggling in the darkness and have their hands full of whoever was taking advantage of the situation) could never have deduced the culprit and the police chopper which could’ve surveyed the situation couldn’t have mobilized action as quickly as Spider-Man could have. And even if they could have they would’ve been in immense danger because yeah, it was a full on super villain the average officer wouldn’t be able to handle.
All this plus how was he supposed to make the excuse that he was going to get pictures when he literally didn’t have his camera? And everyone saw that he didn’t have it.
As for what MJ thought, in context she could probably have deduced that he’d gone off to take pictures, but in hindsight she knew he’d gone off to be Spider-Man. Which doesn’t means he isn’t entitled to be mad, but she probably knew enough that she’d have to go home with someone sans Peter. It’s not even like this is the first time he’s done this, she knows he has to disappear at a drop of a hat. Even ignoring that she could just go home with somebody else, she didn’t need t wait for him, she knows he can get home by himself.
But again...that’s really quite trivial next to the supervillain causing massive powercuts which endangers whole blocks worth of people.
It’s not that her feelings objectively or from Peter’s POV don’t matter. It’s just that Jesus Christ they 100% do not matter in the face of this large scale pressing problem in which there is a massive danger to people’s lives.
Like....perspective!
She’s got a right to be angry, but he didn’t ACTUALLY do anything morally reprehensible. I can even understand why she was mad post Parallel Lives. But again...he was right.
Trying to stop a supervillain who’s causing blackouts which are endangering shittons of people ASAP>Common Courtesy
Emergencies>Common Courtesy
He wasn’t making a decision for her (a ridiculous over extrapolation). He wasn’t treating her like dirt. He was addressing an urgent emergency which was by several magnitudes more important.
If he really was just a photographer and just bounced without telling her then yeah, he would be an asshole. He wasn’t though, there was much more at stake than that.
If you knew that your partner was a superhero and that they bounced to handle an obviously immediate emergency where people’s lives were at risk and you were livid over it then that’s more a dick move on your part than theirs. Innocent lives>your relationship.
Letting you know what’s going on is one thing when there is time to spare and that’s easy, under these conditions it wasn’t. He was concerned about raising suspicions, he had a great avenue for getting to and assessing the crisis and thereby resolving it faster in order to help people. So again no, Peter was not being rude, or a dick. He was just trying to avoid people getting hurt. What an asshole I guess.
In context yeah to MJ it might have seemed like he didn’t value her or the relationship, but again, we know int he issue, from past issues, and in hindsight that that’s blatantly not true. It was a great character moment for her and the story nevertheless, but at face value she isn’t actually morally justified because again we know what Peter was doing and why he was doing it.
“Helping the city is fine. Not letting your girlfriend have a say in decisions that affect her? Less fine.”
Again the safety of the city>MJ getting home. Also again, he wasn’t preventing her from having a decision. He was responding to an emergency whilst trying to protect his identity, that thing that’s endangered people when it’s gotten out.
“Separate though tangentially-related issue: I am also in no way a fan of the “I MUST LIE TO PROTECT MY FRAGILE GIRLFRIEND” trope. It’s sexist, patriarchal, and condescending.”
Then it’s a good thing that was absolutely not present in any way shape or form in this story then wasn’t it.
Peter wasn’t lying to protect his fragile girlfriend. He was trying to protect his identity so that his life and the lives of ALL those cloe to him would not become endangered.
Again...what a dick. What a dick move from the guy who was terrorized by three different lunatics who knew his secret and who killed someone he loved, nearly killed other people he loved, and who nearly mentally broke him.
Also question. Was it sexist, patriarchal, condescending and other year one sociology glossary terms when Spider-Girl, Wonder Woman or female superheroes in general ever did the exact same thing?
“Mary Jane deserves the right to make an informed decision about dating Peter, a superhero, and all that entails.”
Not really.
By this logic everyone of Peter’s friends should have the right to know who he is.
But the more people who know his secret the less secret it is and thereby the more chance of it getting out and hurting people there are.
Not to mention he has no idea if they are trustworthy or not, or how willing they are to bear the burden of knowledge.
If he just comes out and tells Mary Jane and she can’t handle it, or if she for whatever reason reveals it Peter’s life and Aunt May’s life are going to be destroyed. Whilst maybe he doesn’t think this of Mary Jane specifically, anyone he confides in may well fall out with him (even more likely in romantic relationships compared to friendships) and thereby use that knowledge against him in some way. Which again has already happened with immensely bad results.
Thus far in his life Peter has had three girlfriends.
Betty, Gwen and MJ.
Betty was bonkers and whilst he wasn’t wholesale innocent, really mistreated him and became incredibly upset at the mere mention of Spider-Man when he tried to reveal his identity to her.
Gwen not only hated Spider-Man, but worse reacted hysterically and believed the worst fo him when he initially revealed the truth to her in ASM #87.
MJ and Harry similarly took that news very, very badly and in MJ’s case, Peter has only just seen her change from the carefree party girl she once was into someone who’s still like that but more serious.
Under these circumstances why would Peter or anybody, male or female, be simply upfront with the single most intimate part of themselves which amounts to literal life or death?
They wouldn’t. And if they were with everyone they dated, suddenly there are a shitton of security risks out there.
I’m not saying anybody he is with doesn’t deserve to know eventually at some point. But Peter and Mary Jane have been together for less than a year at the point of this story. They are serious, they are in love, they are going steady, but neither of them are certain about where things are going, or will wind up and they have only recently gotten to that level after a HUGE emotional crisis that’s rocked them (Gwen’s return).
Basically this is a straight choice between telling one person they might be in danger (even though MJ probably knows that, Peter’s aunt was kidnapped because he happened to snap Spidey photos) or risking everyone DEFINITLY being in danger.
In relationships there are degrees of intimacy and degrees of trust (usually built up over time). For example it’s a bad idea to propose marriage unless you are relatively certain about your future with your partner and their own response. Peter’s identity is a much larger and much more dangerous thing than a mere proposal. He shouldn’t tell anyone his secret unless he’s as confidant as possible that they would be able to handle it and keep it safe, even if things don’t work out between them. He’s not there with MJ at this point.
Hell the one time he DOES reveal his secret to his girlfriend it totally backfires. Felicia didn’t like learning the truth and she was cavalier with it too. He was just lucky she cared enough about him/hated Foreigner enough that she didn’t spill the beans when she had her mad on for him. Had she done that his life would have been over and so would Aunt May’s
Furthermore divulging the secret is a huge deal for the person hearing it. It’s essentially burdening them with a massive and dangerous responsibility they didn’t ask for and maybe didn’t want. See Miles Morales for proof of this

SPOILERS he does tell his girlfriend...and she totally betrays him...to HYDRA...
But I guess that was better than him being ‘sexist and patriarchal’.
“Including occasionally leaving parties early without her. (Yes, I know it was retconned so that she knew all along, but it doesn’t justify the fact that Peter chose never to tell her, no matter how serious their relationship got, which includes a proposal. Or Gwen, who died without knowing who he was, for that matter.)”
See above. Peter was honestly proposing to her the first time around more out of other factors in his life. That proposal was him being a naive moron, though he did love her. He was likely going to tell her if she said yes.
With Gwen his not telling her was again a forgivable mistake of youth. He was dumb kid at the point he wanted to marry her and seriously believed he could hide it from her.
However he was in a catch 22 situation. He knew she’d reject him if she knew the truth because of ASM #87, and he knew she hated his alter ego. But at the same time he was in love with her and was a kid. Would he have committed to the lie had she lived or would he have broken it off or else tried to tell her the truth?
We’ll never really know although it’s pretty fucking obvious they were never going to last.
His initial solution though in ASM #100 was to just get rid of his powers altogether. Again, stupid and naive but he was a kid.
Was it immoral of him to have married her without divulging the truth? Yes.
Was it immoral of him to have not told her during their relationship as it was? Not really.
Again he was a kid in a catch 22 situation where he was serious about Gwen (the first person he was ever serious about) but knew she’d reject him. Really from ASm #87 or her Dad’s death onwards he was just treading water trying to figure out what to do.
Also because of the bullshtit Clone Conspiracy storyline Gwen actually did die knowing Peter was Spider-Man. But if we want to take all retcons into account Gwen was straight up pregnant with the kids of Peter’s best friend’s Dad...and expected him to raise them. She lied about that throughout their relationship sooooooooo....
“Also…please explain to me how magically disappearing from a balcony with no discernible exit in any way helps him hide his secret identity from anyone at that party. Especially since, if MJ and/or anyone else had walked out two seconds earlier, they would have seen him dangling off of that helicopter. How is that preferable to saying goodbye and leaving through the front door like a regular, unsuperpowered person and thus NOT arousing suspicion?”
a) It was raining, at night time and in the midst of a blackout so how WOULD they have seen him hanging from the helicopter?
b) The Spider Sense probably would’ve helped him avoid prying eyes
c) The chopper probably was moving fast.
d) In the blackout he probably figured people would presume he just slipped out without them seeing which is what MJ obviously did.
e) Nobody actually saw him on the balcony. Robbie just suggested MJ try there as he saw Peter heading towards it
f) Drawing attention to the fact that you are leaving to take pictures at a party full of investigative journalists, one of which you suspect already has an idea of your identity, the other being the guy who’s literally created supervillains to try and kill you, and all when you obviously don’t have a camera (and therefore cannot deliver any photos), is a comparatively larger security risk than just leaving and letting people presume what they will whilst they’re distracted by other stuff going on
g) The chopper provided him a great way to get up high and assess the situation whilst also going direct to the action as they might have more information that he does. He knows the blackouts are systematic so being able to see the pattern from a birds eye view means he has a better chance of figuring out where they will strike next and how to stop it and end the desperate situation. If he chose to exit through the party and make explanations he’d lose his window of opportunity to catch up the chopper, especially given the pitch darkness.
“Nope. It was a terrible way of handling the situation any way you look at it, and, again, MJ is right to be angry at his clear lack of respect for her.”
Nope, it was the viable option for handling the situation that was itself not ideal.
Nope he didn’t disrespect her. Just did what was necessary.
Yes though she has a right to be angry, I never said otherwise, my contention as with YOUR assessment of HIM.
Is it not charming how half the Spider-Man fanbase seems to shit on Mary Jane because they don’t bother trying to empathize with her and see things from her POV, whilst the other half shit on Peter for the same reasons.
“P.S. – I was laughing at Harry, who I generally like very much, affectionately for his nosiness. The way those panels CLEARLY want you to do. They are setting it up to be funny, which is pretty damn obvious???? Harry tends to just generally be pretty nosy? It’s endearing most of the time???”
Harry was drugged up because he’d just come out of the hospital.
I’m not saying Peter doing what he did doesn’t suck for Mary Jane.
I’m saying Peter did what he did for the greater good which unfortunately screwed MJ over in an entirely non-lasting way which was ultimately more of an inconvenience for her and did more damage emotionally. Which he later tried to make amends for.
Peter obviously does respect Mary Jane as his girlfriend, but this was like so many things in his life an emergency.

This is the realm of "pattern" or causality, from which the realm the normally thought of "five senses manifests. Some define it is the "other" of the "two worlds" that the witch or magician walks between. ARADIA- Daughter of the Goddess Diana, and a name for the Goddess used by Italian Witches or Strega, commonly used in many Wiccan traditions today. ASPECTING- Any advanced magickal activity in which a practitioner manifests a particular aspect of the Goddess or God, in thought, feelings, behavior, appearance, etc.; Often as a direct result of a "Drawing Down". One of the 4 Celtic "Fire Festivals. Commemorates the changing of the Goddess from the Crone to the Maiden. Celebrates the first signs of Spring. Also called "Imbolc" (the old Celtic name). This is the seasonal change where the first signs of spring and the return of the sun are noted, i.e. the first sprouting of leaves, the sprouting of the Crocus flowers etc. In other words, it is the festival commemorating the successful passing of winter and the beginning of the agricultural year. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Crone to Maiden. This festival also marks the change of the Threefold Goddess energies from that of Mother to Crone. MAIDEN- An appointment held by one of the women of the coven. She is virtually the assistant High Priestess. This term is also the descriptive term used to describe the first of the aspects of the Threefold Goddess Energies (Maiden, Mother, and Crone). It is traditionally associated with the Waxing Moon, and the period from Imbolc (Candlemas) to Beltane (May eve) where the energies are those of initiating, beginning, and creation. OLD RELIGION- another name for the Craft. PAGANING- Presentation of an infant to the Circle and to the Gods. PENTACLE- a disc shaped talisman; in particular, the metal disc which represents the earth element among the witch's working tools. PENTAGRAM- The five-pointed star. Because of the negative connotations, it is not used by most Wiccans today. WATCH TOWERS- Originally from the Enochian branch of Ceremonial Magick, now incorporated into many "Traditions" of Wicca, these are the four elemental "directions" or "quarters" (corresponding to the appropriate points on the compass) called to protect the Circle during its establishment. Each of them have a correspondence between the compass point, an element, and (varying amongst different traditions) color associated with them. WICCA- the name most modern day Witches use for the Craft. It comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Wicce, meaning to bend or to shape. This is the root word from which we get wicker. What Is A Sociolect?
Language is a topic that will never get boring because everyone single one of us speaks differently. We talk a lot about how where we live affects how we speak — those maps that show where people say “soda” and where people say “pop” are endlessly fascinating — but there’s more to your dialect than geography. Even within a specific area, people can talk in very different ways; you probably don’t even speak the same exact way as the people you live with. The study of how social factors influence the way you speak is called sociolinguistics, and one of these dialects, fittingly, is called a sociolect.
The Definition Of ‘Sociolect’
A sociolect is, to put it simply, a social dialect. Right away, this phrase can cause some confusion. Some people, including linguists, use “dialect” to refer only to ways of speaking that are geographically defined. We have a whole series looking at American dialects, for example, from sea (California English) to shining sea (New England English). And of course, there’s enough confusion about what separates a “language” from a “dialect,” but that’s a discussion for another article. To make it obvious what you’re referring to, it’s best to qualify “dialect” by specifically calling it either a “geographical dialect” or a “social dialect.”
Since their conception, though, sociolects have been put in opposition to (geographical) dialects. The original concise definition given by linguist Peter Trudgill in A Glossary of Sociolinguistics stated that it’s “‘a variety or lect which is thought of as being related to its speakers’ social background rather than geographical background.” If “social background” sounds a bit loose, that’s because it is. It needs to be flexible because sociolinguistics is a relatively new field — Trudgill’s Glossary came out in 2003 — and so our ideas of what factors can affect language are constantly changing.
What Factors Make Up A Sociolect?
Saying that a “sociolect” is determined by a social group is one thing, but what does that mean? Is your social group your friends, your generation, your gender, your class? Well, it turns out it can be any of those things. Here are some of the factors that can affect your language, along with examples that demonstrate each one.
Age
The clearest example of how age affects the language you speak is slang. Young people are constantly inventing new terms and abandoning old ones, which is why nobody says “groovy” anymore. There is also the eternal cycle of adults blaming teenagers for “ruining” the language, even though those adults were once teenagers who were also blamed for “ruining” language.
Age differences are about more than the hip lingo, though. Pronunciation can differ depending on your age, too. One popular example of this is with the gerund ending -ing. If you listen when people say words like “working,” some people say “workin’” and some clearly pronounce it “working.” While there are many variables that go into whether someone says one or the other, age does have an impact. One study found younger people (teenagers and 20-somethings) were more likely to say “workin’” than people in their 30s and 40s. Interestingly, once you get to even older groups (60s and 70s), people start saying “workin’” again, meaning that this might have to do with social expectations of “professionalism.”
Profession
Speaking of professionalism, your profession is also a factor in your sociolect. There is a somewhat disheartening fact that based on the way adult life works, you might spend more time with your coworkers than you do with your friends and family. So it will come as no surprise that your job has a pretty strong impact on the way you speak. This can come through in a few different ways. Most obviously, your profession requires you to adopt a job-specific jargon, which can be anything from journalism slang to diner lingo. This is true for pretty much any job. If you work in an office, you’re probably well-acquainted with phrases like “key learnings” and “let’s circle back to this,” which might now be part of your sociolect.
Jobs also vary in their formality, which will affect your language quite a bit. There’s a difference between, say, how lawyers speak to each other and how truckers speak to each other. Using the same example as in the last section, lawyers are more likely to enunciate the full “working,” while truckers are more likely to say “workin’.” It all ties into social expectations for what people consider “correct” English.
Gender
The most popular story about the difference between men’s and women’s language is that women speak far more words per day than men do. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, that claim is misleading at best and a sexist stereotype at worst. Yet there are ways that gender may affect the way you speak. For example, one study found men are more likely to use vulgar language than women, and also found that men are more likely to interrupt women than vice versa.
To be clear, a study of men’s and women’s language does not define the difference between genders. It might be tempting to take the expletive example and make grand statements that “men are more brash” or “women are more polite.” But really, all it says is that our English-speaking society encourages men to swear more and women to swear less because of a number of gendered standards. The language we use is always going to be a reflection of the society around us.
Socioeconomic Class
This is probably a somewhat unexpected factor in language, but socioeconomic class can indeed have an effect on your speech. The first study to prove this was done by William Labov, one of the most famous sociolinguistics to have worked in the United States. To do this research, Labov went to department stores in New York City that served people of different social classes: Saks for upper class, Macy’s for middle class and S. Klein for lower class (his class terminology is a bit dated today). He was specifically looking at the use of the “r” at the end of syllables, like saying “car” instead of “cah.” At the time of his work in the 1980s, it was considered “prestigious” to pronounce the “r,” but omitting the “r” was a feature of the New York accent. His research showed that the employees of Saks were more likely to pronounce the “r,” while those at Macy’s and S. Klein were more likely to omit it, indicating that people did consider pronouncing the “r” to be prestigious.
The way Labov approached the study itself may sound weird. Why would the way employees talk in department stores show anything about social class? But the point of the study is that these employees are trying to serve the social class of their clientele. This all goes back to societal expectations. It’s not that your money makes you speak a different way, but people with more money tend to speak in a way that reflects what is considered “prestigious.”
Race
Of the factors that determine sociolects on this list, race may be the most complicated. And because sociolinguistics itself is such a young field, there is still plenty to learn about the many ways race and language intersect. In the United States, one of the most prevalent examples of a racial sociolect is African American Vernacular English. While for many years, many (white) people treated AAVE as “broken English,” it has always been a fully formed sociolect with its own set of consistent rules.
It’s also important to note that race isn’t a factor that only affects some people. Too often, people treat “white” English as a neutral version of the language, but there’s no such thing as neutral. Each of the factors in this list so far affect every single one of us.
And More
There are potentially endless social groups we could look at if we really wanted to examine all the factors that can affect your sociolect. The problem is, they start to get a bit granular. A famous study by sociolinguist Penelope Eckert, for example, looked at high schoolers at a school near Detroit, Michigan. In the study, she was able to identify two major social groups — jocks and burnouts — and she found that burnouts pronounce their vowels differently from the jocks. This may sound silly, but it drives home the point that any community you participate in will change the way you talk. Your friend group, your family members and your coworkers all form their own sociolects that both influence you and are influenced by you.
How Do I Know What Sociolect I Use?
As the last section made clear, you don’t speak a single “sociolect.” Any number of factors will determine the way you speak. And this isn’t even taking into account geographical dialects. If everything in your life was the same except that you were born somewhere else, you’d speak differently.
The most important thing to know about all of this, though, is that sociolects are probabilistic, not deterministic. That means you’re just more likely to speak a certain sociolect if you are part of a certain social group, but it doesn’t mean you have to. Men might be more likely to swear than women in certain parts of the world, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t men who never swear and women who curse like a sailor. Also, you speak differently depending on where you are and who you’re speaking to, which is a phenomenon called code-switching. With all of this complexity, there are no hard-and-fast rules to the way any specific person speaks. The best that sociolinguistic studies can do is find overall patterns in the way groups of people communicate.
Humans are trapped in a constant feedback loop with language. We use ways of talking to convey who we are, but we also are the ones who make up the rules for what it means to talk a certain way. We all use sociolects both consciously and unconsciously, and too often use them to shove other people into demographic boxes. Language is an important part of identity, but we could all do a better job of seeing the difference between how we speak and who we really are.
