I'm having A Thought about cultural assumptions and how people often conflate their own cultural quirks and patterns as being either universal or Obviously Logical, based on seeing a post with someone's lock screen, because I have ADHD.
It was a simple example but a very neat one, and it's about how we write and speak about dates (as in the measure of time, not the fruit of the date palm or an intimate meeting). Americans write dates backwards, by the standards of nearly every culture (inc. other English speaking cultures). They write them MM/DD/YY instead of DD/MM/YY, this is known.
But the thing is, ok there is a good reason most people write the day then month but none the less, what a culture decides on is still just a little bit arbitrary, the point is it's a cultural agreement that This Is How It's Done. Earlier I saw a post with someone's lock screen, an American, and it displayed something like "Wednesday, December 12" and that caught my eye because mine obviously reads "Thursday, 9 March", because I come from the UK, where we use DD/MM.
And I was reminded of an American once telling me how MM/DD obviously makes more sense though, because you see, that's how you say dates in English! You would say "March ninth", so you write the month then the day! Except, well, that's not how we say dates here, we say "the ninth of March". But this guy had assumed that the standard phrasing in his culture was just how all English speakers would say it, therefore the date format they used was clearly the more natural and intuitive way, and of course you think in terms of the month something is happening and then when in the month it is!
To me, however, this feels like someone earnestly and confidently explaining that naturally you put your socks on over your shoes.
Obviously there's a bunch of examples of this kind of thing, and many with far greater importance, but it just seemed like a really very telling and concise example of how people will see features of their culture that result from specific quirks as universalities that make more sense than any other system.
#culture#musings#other examples specifically dealing with Americans are like measuring granular ingredients in cups and the fucking Fahrenheit scale#like that one time an American got very angry with me and some others for explaining that actually people *do* weigh flour when baking#he was insistent that ''no one would go to that effort'' and that recipes that list weights for flour and sugar are stupid#absolutely convinced that people who use weights are secretly converting them to cups or something because he couldn't imagine#the arduous task of *weighing flour* (which is extremely simple and a normal part of baking)#or US American insistence on Fahrenheit as being ''more intuitive to humans'' compared to Celsius#spoiler: it really isn't it actually sounds fucking insane to people who grew up with Celsius#it's just a matter of what you've internalised as feeling like [near arbitrary number] degrees#but people back-justify it like ''but it's more granular!'' like yeah actually we have half degrees#but also functionally do you really actually note a huge difference between 20 (68F) and 20.5 (69F) degrees?#will you go ''oh it's one F higher so this coat can stay at home today'?'#maybe US Americans do because they were brought up on Fahrenheit#maybe that's my Celsius based cultural assumptions#anyway the UK switched to Celsius during my mother's childhood and she doesn't use Fahrenheit#my grandparents didn't use Fahrenheit despite being middle aged when the switch happened#turns out if you make everyone learn Celsius the vast majority get the hang of it and go ''wow Fahrenheit sucked lol''#and then proceed to never use it again#it now only exists when newspapers want a heat wave to sound hotter - like 70% of the populace have no fucking clue what it means

Since most people are more offended by doctors killing pets than children (which is super backwards btw), this should offend everyone. Yes, you too cat lovers, because you know how many “extra” cat’s there are going to autopsy labs there must be cats used all across the “scientific” spectrum before they use the same “treatments” on our children.
Where did Anthony Fauci go? Back to his Gain of Function (bioweaponry) research using OUR tax dollars.
Time to arrest the traitor and let him swing.

what's interesting about anne blacksails bonny as a remarkable entry into the loyal hound genre is that she's introduced as vane's attack dog of all people. which like yeah he's her boss and leader and it speaks to how much he values her potential usefulness because it's certainly not her value as a person he has any consideration for as the captain of the NPS (nassau pirates' ship) Violent Miss O'Ginny but the show demonstrates VERY early on that there's no real respect/loyalty between them as individuals (her readiness to abandon him and how effectively he reins her in on pain of death in 103). it's what it says abt her loyalty to jack because it's the intensity of his loyalty to vane that gets her on side bc she's jack's attack dog to the core. partners til they put us in the fucking ground. loyal hound & pathetic wet cat slash paper towel. and that other guy

coming up with zombie apocalypse stories is always fun because you can just say whatever and people will just have to take your word for it
#personal#oh it doesn't make sense? zombie media rarely makes sense if you really think about it we're here to have fun be quiet#for this one specifically they've created some fertilizer with a newly discovered fungus as ingredient#because of its regenerative abilities it would be great for crops because they'll grow better and faster and whatever#but soon enough it turns out that the fungus can make you very very sick and well. that's how it all starts#original strain only turns a handful of its victims into zombies because it targets people with strong immune systems#the stronger your immune system the more likely your body ends up being to start taking on the functions of the fungus cells#which means it starts regenerating a bunch of dead cells and then you become a ghoul. oops!#but then you can also start changing other people into zombies which is how it ends up escalating because the original strain itself#wouldn't be strong enough to end the world but the fact you can turn others is what makes it spiral#especially big cities become vulnerable because the zombies are like. highly adaptable?? you get different types of zombies in different#environments so like city zombies are super fast but not too sturdy so they die quick but also change 1-3 other people before they go#and countryside zombies are a lot sturdier and tougher to kill but also are just much slower etc etc and so on#and because it's all in a fertilizer there's also zombie plants!! which is fun because they're an invasive species#so there's just zombie nature taking over regular nature and zombies can use these like#zombie forests to regenerate in and all that :] horrible times all around!

Whoever decided it was a good idea to bake a pie on a fucking wednesday afternoon is a goddamn clown and should be dropkicked into the sun
#🤡#it's me#god it was SO much more complicated than i thought!#i baked pie just a few weeks ago and there was no problem so i figured today would be the same but nooOoO#i can't function in a dirty kitchen so I had to do the dishes first and let my ingredients thaw as most are stuff i buy or gather on sale#and then use when i have energy or want to#but yeah i did the dishes for like an hour and a half yesterday so in my brain baking a pie would just be as easy as me going to the kitchen#and getting started! meanwhile i forgot mom cooked dinner yesterday and somehow that woman uses every goddamn pot and pan in the house when#she cooks#so i had to clean that up plus glasses and utensils and stuff we used since yesterday afternoon#anyway then i started on the actual fucking pie and i semi followed a recipe this time and it called for one and a half TEAspoons of#cinnamon but last time i baked a pie i was just going off my own brain and i used half a TABLESPOON so like. same fucking thing basically#but my brain read the recipe and was like oh that's kind of a lot. double checked yep that says tablespoons okay i mean sally hasnt led me#astray before in it goes THEN MY BRAIN READS IT RIGHT and I'm like fuck#that said 1.5 teaspoons not 1.5 tablespoons#and i had dumped it in on top of other unmixed spices so i couldnt just scoop it out#anyway i think i managed to save it maybe? drained a lot of liquid and reduced it instead and i tasted an apple and it was good though i#havent tried the reduction yet and i only added a little to the pie#AND THEN FOR SOME REASON I DECIDED TO DO A LATTICE CRUST. EVEN THOUGH I'VE ONLY EVER DONE IT ONCE BEFORE#and did i look at a guide? nope. it took forever#anyway girlie is finally in the oven and if it turns out bad I'm throwing out my oven#my post#baking#this took so much more energy than i was expecting it to#it better be fucking good!

re: beni making more than just the mochi at the wallflower - where is he even GETTING all these potatoes? they haven't even built a field yet and when they do they're growing apricorns for me (don't judge. I like me my feather balls, have negative aiming skills, and got bored of throwing pokemon at trees like two areas in :p)
maybe that npc who says he gathers his own ingredients was speaking very literally. maybe that one old man is hauling back metric tons of sootfoot roots THROUGH the highlands fieldlands and back to jubilife all by himself with uh. ninja powers.
fr though it's just not. a sustainable model for feeding all these ppl. the AMOUNT you would need to drag back every day! or the trading you'd need to do constantly for it. no wonder beni's always trying to buy them off you constantly like "oh nooo i hope i have enough for tonight" bro just LEARN A SECOND RECIPE. they can't be living like this. there are so many fieldlands native berries. mushrooms. honey. assorted veggies and herbs. various edible-looking pokemon assuming there is a single person in jubilife capable of facing down against the fearsome magikarp in a battle. fucking RICE?? the cake lure bases are right there. you help invent two new recipes as part of sidequests and NEITHER ONE involves potatoes. eat some goddamn pickles why don't you.
