A new era of solar observation
For the first time, scientists have taken near-daily measurements of the Sun’s global coronal magnetic field, a region of the Sun that has only been observed irregularly in the past. The resulting observations are providing valuable insights into the processes that drive the intense solar storms that impact fundamental technologies, and thus lives and livelihoods, here on Earth.
An analysis of the data, collected over eight months by an instrument called the Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP), is published today in Science.
The solar magnetic field is the primary driver of solar storms, which can pose threats to power grids, communication systems, and in-space technologies like GPS. However, our ability to understand how the magnetic field builds up energy and erupts has been limited by the challenge of observing it in the solar corona, the Sun’s upper atmosphere.
Measuring the magnetism of the region through standard polarimetric methods typically requires large, expensive equipment that to date has only been able to study small segments of the corona. However, the combined use of coronal seismology and UCoMP observations makes it possible for researchers to produce consistent and comprehensive views of the magnetic field of the global corona — the whole-Sun view one sees during a solar eclipse.
“Global mapping of the coronal magnetic field has been a big missing part in the study of the Sun,” said Zihao Yang, lead author who pursued this research as a PhD graduate at Peking University, China, and is now a postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR). “This research is helping us fill a crucial gap in our understanding of coronal magnetic fields, which are the source of the energy for storms that can impact Earth.”
The international team is made of researchers from Northumbria University, UK; NSF NCAR; Peking University, China; and University of Michigan. The research was funded by a grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key R&D Program of China and supported by the Newkirk graduate student fellowship awarded to Yang by NSF NCAR. The UCoMP instrument was developed with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and is operated by NSF NCAR at the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory.
Upgraded instrument
Although scientists have been able to routinely measure the magnetic field on the Sun’s surface, known as the photosphere, it has long been difficult to measure the much dimmer coronal magnetic field. This has limited a deeper understanding of the three-dimensional structure and evolution of the magnetic field of the corona, where solar storms brew.
To measure the three-dimensional coronal magnetic fields in depth, big telescopes like NSF’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) are needed. With a 4-meter-diameter aperture, DKIST is the world’s largest solar telescope, and recently demonstrated its groundbreaking ability for making detailed observations of the coronal magnetic field. However, DKIST is not able to map the Sun all at once. The smaller UCoMP instrument is actually better-suited to give scientists global pictures of the coronal magnetic field, albeit at lower resolution and in a two-dimensional projection. The observations from both sources are thus highly-complementary to a holistic view of the coronal magnetic field.
UCoMP is primarily a coronagraph, an instrument that uses a disc to block out light from the Sun, similar to an eclipse, making it easier to observe the corona. It also combines a Stokes polarimeter, which images other spectral information such as coronal line intensity and Doppler velocity. Even though UCoMP has a much smaller aperture (20 cm), it is able to take a wider view which makes it possible to study the entire Sun on most days.
The researchers applied a method called coronal seismology to track magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) transverse waves in the UCoMP data. The MHD waves gave them information that made it possible to create a two-dimensional map of the strength and direction of the coronal magnetic field.
In 2020, a previous study used UCoMP’s predecessor and the coronal seismology method to produce the first map of the global coronal magnetic field. This was a crucial step toward routine coronal magnetic field measurements. UCoMP has expanded capabilities that makes it possible to make more detailed, routine measurements. During the UCoMP study, the research team produced 114 magnetic field maps between February and October 2022, or one almost every other day.
“We are entering a new era of solar physics research where we can routinely measure the coronal magnetic field,” said Yang.
Completing the picture
The observations also produced the first measurements of the coronal magnetic field in the polar regions. The Sun’s poles have never been directly observed because the curve of the Sun near the poles keeps it just beyond our view from Earth. Though the researchers didn’t directly view the poles, for the first time they were able to take measurements of the magnetism emitting from them. This was due in part to the improved data quality provided by UCoMP and because the Sun was near solar maximum. The typically weak emissions from the polar region have been much stronger, making it easier to obtain coronal magnetic field results in the polar regions.
As a postdoctoral fellow at NSF NCAR, Yang will continue his research of the Sun’s magnetic field; he hopes to improve existing coronal models that are based on measurements of the photosphere. Since the current method used with UCoMP is limited to two dimensions, it still doesn’t capture the full three-dimensional magnetic field. Yang and his colleagues hope to combine their research with other techniques to get a deeper understanding of the full vector of the magnetic field in the corona.
The third dimension of the magnetic field, oriented along a viewer's line of sight, is of particular importance for understanding how the corona is energized leading up to a solar eruption. Ultimately, a combination of a large telescope and a global field of view is needed to measure all the three-dimensional twists and tangles behind phenomena like solar eruptions; this is the motivation behind the proposed Coronal Solar Magnetism Observatory (COSMO), a 1.5-meter-diameter solar refracting telescope undergoing its final design study.
“Since coronal magnetism is the force that sends mass from the Sun flying across the solar system, we have to observe it in 3D — and everywhere all at once, throughout the global corona,” said Sarah Gibson, COSMO Development Lead and an NSF NCAR scientist co-author on the paper. "Yang's work represents a huge step forward in our ability to understand how the Sun's global coronal magnetic field changes from day to day. This is critical to our ability to better predict and prepare for solar storms, which are an ever-increasing danger to our ever-more technologically dependent lives here on Earth."

You don’t need a scientific journal to tell you the climate is changing. In Ghana, we’re already seeing it—rains that come too early, or don’t come at all. Floods where there used to be dry ground. Roads washed out in the middle of delivery schedules. And long, intense heatwaves that put strain on storage facilities and vehicles alike.

Freight Journey Map: From Client Inquiry to Cargo Delivery

To most people, logistics is invisible—until something goes wrong.
You place an order, and it arrives. Or it doesn’t. But between those two points exists a surprisingly detailed map, one with checkpoints, reroutes, quiet pauses, and last-minute sprints. It’s not always linear. Not always predictable. But it’s there.
At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we often walk clients through this journey—especially first-time importers or exporters. And while no two shipments are exactly alike, the steps tend to follow a pattern. A kind of rhythm. I thought it might be helpful to lay it out plainly, from that first inquiry all the way to final delivery.
Because when you understand the freight map, you’re not just a passenger in the process. You’re part of it.
Step 1: The Client Reaches Out
It all begins with a question. Sometimes it’s direct: “Can you help us ship cocoa powder from Ghana to Turkey?” Other times, it’s more exploratory: “We’re not sure what’s needed to import solar panels—can you guide us?”
At this stage, clarity is key. We ask the basics:
What are the goods?
Where are they now?
Where are they going?
Are they time-sensitive?
Do they require special handling?
It’s not just about rates. It’s about understanding the full context. A shipment of pharmaceuticals is a different world from a container of hardwood. And moving goods from Tema to Lagos isn’t the same as airfreighting to Dubai.
Step 2: Route Planning and Mode Selection
Next comes route planning. Do we go by air, sea, or road? Is this best handled with full container load (FCL) or less-than-container load (LCL)? Is bonded warehousing needed?
We look at transit time, budget, reliability, and risk. There’s often a tradeoff. Faster might be costlier. Cheaper might mean slower. We explain the options—sometimes down to the fine print—and help the client decide.
I remember a local exporter shipping moringa powder to Canada. Airfreight was prohibitively expensive for the volume. We opted for sea freight with a two-week buffer, just in case. It arrived on time, under budget, and everyone exhaled a little.
Step 3: Documentation and Compliance
Now things get serious. This step is where many delays are born—or prevented.
We gather:
Commercial invoice
Packing list
Bill of Lading (or Air Waybill)
Customs declarations
Permits, if needed (especially for regulated goods)
Certificates of origin or conformity
In Ghana, we also navigate the ICUMS system (our Integrated Customs Management System), ensuring everything aligns properly before the cargo even arrives at the port.
And if goods are donor-funded, or part of a special exemption, the documentation gets even more layered. It’s tedious, yes—but essential.
Step 4: Cargo Handling and Pickup
Now, the physical journey begins.
We arrange trucking from the client’s warehouse—or receive goods at our designated depot. Depending on the mode of transport, the cargo is packaged, labeled, palletized, or containerized.
And here, safety is non-negotiable. Damaged goods don’t just create cost. They damage reputations. For sensitive items—electronics, perishables, machinery—we follow strict handling protocols.
For one government-backed energy project, we moved solar inverters from Accra to rural Northern Ghana. Each item was worth thousands of dollars, and any drop, bump, or mishandling could render them useless. We used foam-cushioned crates and GPS-tracked trucks. Slow, but safe.
Step 5: Port or Airport Clearance
At the port or airport, we begin clearance procedures. Timing is everything here. A delay of even 24 hours can trigger demurrage fees or missed connections.
Our team liaises with customs, verifies cargo status, settles duties (or ensures exemptions are honored), and arranges release.
One thing clients often underestimate? Customs can flag a shipment even when everything’s correct. Random inspections happen. So we build in buffer days, just in case. It’s not about pessimism—it’s about realism.
Step 6: Final Delivery
Once cleared, it’s time to move.
If the goods are destined for an Accra warehouse, final delivery might be same-day. But inland destinations—like Tamale, Wa, or even neighboring countries—require careful route planning. Roads, weather, fuel, and weight restrictions all play a role.
And then… the delivery happens. It might be a truck rolling into a warehouse at 3:00 a.m. Or a driver handing off a signed POD (Proof of Delivery) in the rain outside a construction site.
Either way, it’s a small moment that represents a long journey.

Solar wind plasma sensor to help track space weather
The Southwest Research Institute-developed Solar Wind Plasma Sensor (SWiPS) has been delivered and integrated into a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite dedicated to tracking space weather. SWiPS will measure the properties of ions originating from the Sun, including the very fast ions associated with coronal mass ejections that interact with the Earth’s magnetic environment.
NOAA’s Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) satellite will orbit the Sun at approximately a million miles from Earth, at a point known as L1. The satellite will remotely image the Sun and make local measurements of the solar wind, high-energy particles and the interplanetary magnetic field. SwRI not only developed SWiPS but also will support operations and data analysis, with the goal of providing advance warning of space weather events. These phenomena can affect technology such as GPS and power grids as well as the safety of astronauts who could be exposed to high levels of radiation.
“The delivery and integration of SWiPS is the culmination of four years of hard work by a very dedicated and talented team. I couldn’t be prouder of this group,” said Dr. Robert Ebert, a staff scientist in SwRI’s Space Science Division and SWiPS principal investigator. “The measurements made by SWiPS will provide advance warning in real-time of phenomena associated with space weather before they arrive in the space environment near Earth.”
SWiPS was successfully integrated with the SWFO-L1 spacecraft, which is now undergoing environmental testing. Measurements of the solar wind ion velocity, density and temperature provided by SWiPS, along with information from the SWFO-L1 magnetometer, also built by SwRI, will allow NOAA to predict the severity of geomagnetic storms.
“The SWiPS sensor design is based on the Ion and Electron Sensor flown on ESA’s comet mission, Rosetta,” said SwRI’s Prachet Mokashi, the SWiPS project manager. “The compact design, low resource requirements and advanced data production make this instrument optimal for the SWFO-L1 and other similar missions.”
A traditional strength of SwRI’s Space Science Division is the design and fabrication of instruments to measure space plasmas. These dilute ionized gases populate the immediate space environments of the Earth and other solar system bodies as well as interplanetary space.
The SWiPS project started shortly after staff from SwRI and other organizations were urged to work primarily from home due to COVID-19. “Designing and developing a complex instrument such as this was especially challenging when we couldn’t get the engineers in the same room, and supply chains were disrupted. But we persevered to build the flight instrument and successfully test it before delivery to NASA,” said Michael Fortenberry, the system engineer for SWiPS and a director in the Space Systems Division at SwRI.
NASA, which manages the mission for NOAA, plans to launch SWFO-L1 in 2025 as a rideshare with the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission on a SpaceX launch vehicle. SwRI also plays a key role in that mission, managing the payload and providing a scientific instrument to help analyze and map particles streaming from the edge of interstellar space and to help understand particle acceleration near Earth.

We have a lot of work cut out for us to educate the masses," Griffin said. "Many 'experts' stated the outage was a once in a lifetime event, but my analysis of the historic data and consultation with space weather scientists suggests that this type of event may not even be once in a solar cycle frequency.
