[0:11] I loved what films did.

[0:13] I would constantly,

[0:14] you know, go to the back of the VHS's

[0:16] and the address for Universal Pictures

[0:19] or MGM would be on there,

[0:21] and I'd just start writing to the studios,

[0:23] asking if I could be in their, you know, in a movie.

[0:27] And then...That's more of a what I remember, yeah.

[0:31] I don't remember my first audition really well.

[0:33] I just remember that I didn't do very well.

[0:36] You know, I think the phrase was after, "you sucked pond water".

[0:39] And that's a ridiculous phrase, but.

[0:43] I moved to Arizona when I was 14 to live with my mother,

[0:46] and I always wanted to be an actor,

[0:48] but being in Arizona, I was only a state away.

[0:51] I'd been flying from Arizona to Los Angeles

[0:55] for two or three years for auditions.

[0:58] Yeah, by myself.

[0:59] I'd get out of school and I'd fly into Burbank Airport,

[1:02] I'd get in a taxicab, I'd go to the audition.

[1:04] I'd taxi back, I found out I didn't get it,

[1:07] and then the whole while I'm back on Southwest, you know,

[1:10] flying back to Arizona, go to school the next day.

[1:14] Hee...

[1:15] I was 18 or 17-18, and I'd skipped

[1:18] my junior year prom

[1:19] to be this...to be this extra,

[1:25] and then by my senior year when prom was to go on,

[1:27] I was out in Malta, filming Troy.

[1:29] You know, it was funny, because, you know,

[1:32] the character Patroclus was,

[1:34] you know, [I'd] see little things, you know,

[1:37] references to him being a poet,

[1:39] and so I'd go up to Wolfgang and Brad the next day

[1:41] and I'd be like, "well maybe instead of this shot,

[1:43] maybe you could just have me on that hilltop over there

[1:45] just kind of writing a little bit."

[1:47] And... they were just, "yeah...

[1:50] yeah, that's a good idea."

[1:51] [Garrett pats the air like a one-hand shoulder pat and then chuckles.]

[1:53] Then after, you know, Troy, I went on to...

[1:56] go do Friday Night Lights, the football film.

[1:58] I played football for just a year in Minnesota

[2:01] and then a year in Arizona.

[2:03] But...

[2:05] I don't think was ever a -

[2:08] I think I, I was never really, I don't think I was ever the starter.

[2:10] Heh.

[2:11] I played like defensive end.

[2:13] I was always on defense, so

[2:14] I wasn't the glorious position.

[2:18] I wasn't the ball carrier, I wasn't the quarterback.

[2:20] I wasn't, you know, the one making the touchdowns,

[2:23] so I think that's where, you know.

[2:26] What draws me to certain different roles

[2:28] are the extremities.

[2:29] I mean, doing something completely different.

[2:31] I don't feel during the day that I'm the same person,

[2:34] you know, on Wednesday as I am on Monday,

[2:37] and our minds change, our ideas change,

[2:39] our opinions change constantly.

[2:42] I've been signed on to On the Road since 2007 or so,

[2:46] and I just,

[2:47] I remember reading the book in high school.

[2:50] I mean, I went online and looked,

[2:52] and it said Francis Ford Coppola's directing this,

[2:54] and I was like, "man, I'll never get a chance at this".

[2:57] [And] I still, I mean, we're halfway through filming

[3:00] and I still can't believe I'm a part of it.

[3:02] I auditioned in like March of '07,

[3:05] [and then] I found out on my birthday

[3:07] in September that I'd gotten it.

[3:09] I'd had to land in Chicago for a layover,

[3:11] and when I got to Chicago, my dad called me,

[3:13] sang me all of Happy Birthday,

[3:16] and then I land in L.A.

[3:17] and I get another call from

[3:21] home in Minnesota,

[3:22] and [it was]

[3:24] you know, it was news telling me that my father

[3:27] had dropped of a heart attack

[3:29] [Gasps from behind the camera]

[3:29] Garrett: after he got off the phone with me.

[3:31] So I was just like, I called him up in the hospital

[3:33] and I said, "you know, you can't do this, you know, it's my birthday."

[3:37] And he goes, "I know, son."

[3:39] And I said, I just got On the Road"

[3:40] [Garrett laughs softly.]

[3:42] He's like, "that's great, son."

[3:43] [Garrett sharply inhales.]

[3:44] So it was, you know, a weird balance

[3:47] of... you know...you know, when there's a great amount of good

[3:53] it can also be evened out by

[3:55] a great amount of sort of bad in a way.

[3:58] I sat down with lunch with Jeff Bridges.

[4:01] [Phone chimes.]

[4:02] Garrett: Sorry about this.

[4:03] [Garrett pulls his phone out of his pant pocket and then throws it away. You can hear the phone thunk against the floor.]

[4:08] If it was a car, it'd be out the window.

[4:12] I'm not good with them.

[4:13] I don't appreciate them the way others do.

[4:16] It's like for me, you know when somebody gets a new car

[4:19] and they're so worried that scratch, you know,

[4:22] that first scratch, but after that everything's fine.

[4:24] I'm just saying, you know, everything to me in life

[4:26] is like the second scratch.

In this Screen Tests interview, actor Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Troy, On the Road) explains how he blew his first audition (the reaction, "you sucked pond water") and how he blew off his senior prom to shoot a movie with Brad Pitt.

Transcript I was raised on a farm, so. We only had like three television channels. I don't really remember the first movie I saw. I loved what films did. So I liveblogged TRON: Legacy on BlueSky over the last two nights...

So here is that liveblog! Enjoy!!

Rewatching one of my fave movies—TRON: Legacy. Love how the city settings at the bookends are just *transparently* Vancouver. Also enjoyed the deliberate echoes between ‘89 Flynn and Clu later in the film.

Also cannot BELIEVE they cast CILLIAN MURPHY as Ed Jr.!!!! And then just—utterly FAILED to use him for a direct sequel!!!!! UGH.

Love to see a Bruce Boxleitner in my TRON films, too!!!! Since he apparently isn’t going to be in No.3 this fall….. (am I salty about this? maybe just a LITTLE BIT.)

Alan has to have IMMEDIATELY clocked that that dog was Sam’s Marvin. Hence his immediate lookup of things on his tablet. Also his obvious amusement at the end of the scene.

Sam Flynn is a very generic white boy protagonist, but Garrett Hedlund plays him with this subtle undercurrent of grief that honestly elevates Sam as a character.

Favorite detail: Sam is on a first name basis with the impound lot attendant. LOVE THAT.

(Also yes I think I’m gonna liveblog the movie, bc why not)

Contrast in the next scene between Alan’s hope and Sam’s cynicism. Interesting, but also [look at] Sam’s face when Alan mentions the page from the arcade. He doesn’t WANT to be cynical, not completely.

Wouldn’t be a TRON film without a Journey song… Choice of “Separate Ways” seems very apt, especially the lyrics we hear. Like. Damn, what a good choice. Even kind of foreshadowing with the chorus! Amazing.

And then “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)”!! Just two VERY GOOD song choices. Anyway. Flynn’s subroom office. (With Lora’s laser, I might add. Add “utter lack of Cindy Morgan” to my list of petty grievances towards Disney.)

As neat as the laser animation is here—‘82’s was cooler.

I do seriously regret not going to see this film in IMAX when it came out. Maybe they’ll do a rerelease or something??

LOVE the subtle and unexplained worldbuilding of “this program has no disc; another stray.” This does get explained in the Uprising animated show, but just leaving it at that in the film leaves you asking questions.

While I do on the one hand like the moody sort of Blade Runner aesthetic of the Legacy Grid, I have to say I like the crazy colors of the Encom Grid way more.

I do feel like the only purpose of the Siren programs here is to Be Sexy, which, yes, I do put as a mark against this film. Like. Yay for more female characters!! Wish they actually had… character, tho.

The Actual Light Lines on the costumes are amazing btw. Love that. Just. There were so many cool things about this film (the music, for one) and I am still salty that all it got at the Oscars were sound noms.

This movie runs on Rule of Cool most of the time and I love it.

Someone on tumblr said Clu sits like a Skyrim jarl and….. like. They weren’t wrong.

I love how Awkward Sam is in the disc game, it’s honestly hilarious.

Also Jeff Bridges gave an interview recently [saying] that Clu basically looked like Bill Maher and….. he ain’t wrong.

Love the whole scene on the throne ship. Sam’s relief turning to suspicion turning to horror. Clu playing up his resemblance to Flynn, for the sake of bringing up Sam’s hopes only to drop them down and grind them in the dirt. It’s SO GOOD.

And like. At this point Sam doesn’t know that his dad’s alive. He’s angry and ready to fight and it’s great. (Also love that he assumes the lightcycle baton is a lightsaber. Lol.)

God. Remember when vfx in movies were actually GOOD. Because they did shit like previz and storyboards. Like. This lightcycle scene is dark, but it’s lit well enough that none of the details get lost. It’s great.

And now here comes my best girl!!!!! I love Quorra so much, she is very much my favorite character in this movie, I have written SO MUCH fanfic about her.

(I actually wrote a whole novel-length fic that diverges from the movie just before Quorra rescues Sam. Sam is injured and captured by Clu, and Quorra and Flynn have to rescue him. I really like that fic, I think I did a good job with it.)

I am such a sucker for family reunion scenes and this one with Flynn and Sam is no exception.

The food in Flynn['s] hideout is interesting. My headcanon is that it’s just repurposed energy (and also that it took Flynn a WHILE before he figured out how to do that).

Ahh the infamously awkward “biodigital jazz, man!” line.

Also I know they made Tron (my man Tron!!!!) shorter bc his body double was shorter (also Rinzler…) but it is hilarious that Tron just kind of…… shrunk. Lol.

Quorra’s so awkward as well and I love her for it. Just. Walking away in the middle of a conversation. Laughing at the wrong time. She’s great.

These dark scenes are so well lit. Like. Exceptionally so. Where did we go wrong the in last 15 years???

Aaaaand now, the best part of this movie, because Michael Sheen is here and ready to SLAY. also Daft Punk is here too and ready to drop a hot track or two.

Like, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges are putting in good drama performances, but Sheen is CLEARLY having the best time out of all of them. He’s great, and his Ziggy Stardust getup is great too.

Clu in Flynn’s hideout. The cold blue lighting here makes Clu look a little less real/human (this is even more evident later on the Rectifier, which I argue was a deliberate choice on the part of the filmmakers). It’s such a good scene tho, a lot of weighty stuff for Clu’s character.

I love that Quorra has a sword. Makes her even cooler in my eyes.

Also this fight sequence is so damn cool (tho a little heavy on the flashing lights). Esp. once Flynn shows up and the whole lighting changes and stuff. (Also Zuse’s Chaplin-esque dance at the end is hilarious.)

“You’re messing with my zen thing, man!” is an amazing line and actually works in a way biodigital jazz did not.

(Also I completely refuse to believe Flynn did not know Quorra was an Iso before messing with her code. It’s slightly implied here he didn’t, which just seems ridiculous to me.)

I like how Flynn understands that Clu’s imperfections and flaws are his own, rather than blaming everything all on his creation.

(One thing I enjoyed about writing that AU fic I mentioned above is that I got to keep certain characters—like Zuse—alive. I don’t have an idea for a sequel at this point, but those characters will be there if I do.)

Also I see the sort of gentle flirtation happening with Sam and Quorra and I like it. I don’t ship it, but it’s cute because Sam clearly drinks his Respect Women juice.

Okay. It’s getting late; I am going to resume this thread and this movie tomorrow. Sorry for clogging y’all’s feeds with my natter about TRON.

And we’re back!! Time for the last 35 minutes of TRON: Legacy!!!

Quorra’s sacrifice here is interesting. She’s hoping to distract Clu long enough to let Sam and Flynn escape through the Portal. Also Clu’s taunting her here is awful (and I mean that in the best way).

And now comes Clu’s speech, where the deaging vfx look their worst, but I think (as I mentioned last night) that is somewhat deliberate. Up to his most recent scenes, Clu was largely lit with warm colors, making his “resemblance” to Flynn a little easier to believe…

…but as his lighting transitions to cooler colors, the resemblance becomes more uncanny, and he looks much less human.

Love Sam’s earnestness in insisting he’s not going home without Flynn. He’s done with the cynicism that colored his scene with Alan; he’s ready to hope again.

Was that a Wilhelm scream as we see the tail end of Sam’s not-shown fight? Love it.

Rinzler surviving that kick off the lift because of course. That dude is ridiculous sometimes.

And now into the last action sequence—the aerial dogfight on the flight to the Portal. Again, despite how dark everything is, you can still tell what’s happening!! What a concept!!!!!!!

Also love how utterly uncanny the Sea of Simulation looks, with the voxel-y texture of the waves. I do rather desperately wish there was some Color to it, tho!!

And then—Flynn recognizes Tron, and Rinzler realizes who he is and— “I fight for the Users”—!!!!!!!!!!! That line makes me want to cheer every time I hear it. I do hate that Tron wasn’t properly in this movie that has his name on it, but it’s almost worth it for that moment when Rinzler remembers.

Arrival at the Portal—only Clu’s gotten there first. And I do love this conversation between Flynn and Clu, and Flynn’s trying to apologize, but Clu—by his nature, being a moment of Flynn’s whole being suspended in time—doesn’t understand, and doesn’t want to. And it’s tragic and I LOVE IT. UGHHH

One last uncanny look at Clu as he struggles for the Portal—and he truly looks inhuman here, thanks to the distortion of the Portal’s effects. And Flynn takes that last, most desperate option and then—reality fades in.

I do like that flashback as Flynn watches Sam and Quorra depart. Like. Beautiful.

So many things left hanging in these last scenes. What were Sam’s plans for the Grid, by saving it on that memory card? His plans for Encom? What would Quorra get up to in the User world? And unless Ares surprises me A Whole Fucking Lot, WE’LL NEVER KNOW. FUCK.

Again: transparently Vancouver here. Don’t care. Quorra drinking in the sunrise, paired with this gorgeous music, is a beautiful and fitting end.

And that’s a movie!!!! I love this movie so much; I have so many things to say about it, even fourteen years later. And god knows it’s helped me write a TON of fanfic, and is still giving me ideas to this day.

Anyway, thanks for indulging me in this thread of chatter. I’m gonna enjoy the fuck out of these end credits songs, because Daft Punk’s score—which I hardly MENTIONED!!! and which is EXCELLENT!!!—is gorgeous af and SHOULD HAVE netted them an Oscar nom. Ah well. Good night, y’all!!!!

You have one of your friends over and you’re talking together with Pedro about anything. At some point the subject of crushes came up. You said that you recently had a dream about Garrett Hedlund. In it he became your boyfriend during an event. You pouted because at the end he went outside to chill with a few friends but you stayed in because of the event. Someone texted you to joined them because he was drunk. He was flirting with Selena Gomez.

You were sitting on the couch with your friend, talking about anything. You haven’t seen her in a while so you had a lot to catch on. Pedro joined the conversation when he came back home after his last interview of the day. You were chilling, drinking a glass of wine each. It wasn’t your first anymore for the three of us.

Your friend started to talk about her celebrity crush that she got the chance to meet two weeks ago at a convention. She’s been a fan of him since she was a teenager.

“I still can’t believe it” she repeated excitedly while showing you guys the pictures. “I met my celebrity crush!!”

“How did you react when you saw him?” You asked

“Oh my god I started to cry” you all laughed “but he was so nice”

“Yeah he is” Pedro added. “I met him once at a gala or something”

“And you didn’t say anything!” She hit him playfully

“It was long time ago, like, I-had-no-beard long time ago” you laughed

“Understandable” she said looking at her phone “Have you ever met yours?” She asked the both of you

“Yes” Pedro said proudly

“I didn’t” you admitted “I have too many” you joked

“Who’s your current crush?” You friend asked. You were practically sure that you heard Pedro gulp.

“I don’t really know. Because of a dream I had a few days ago I’ll say Garrett Hedlund”

“What?” Pedro asked

“Ohh what kind of dream?” Your friend smirked

“Not that kind of dream” you assured her

“I’m legitimately curious” she said “explain the dream”

“Yeah explain” Pedro added, he furrowed his brows “explain the dream you never told me about” you stared at him for a few seconds

“We were just at an event like a gala something like that, and that’s when we became girlfriend and boyfriend apparently”

“You kissed or something?” She wanted details. You have a quick glance at Pedro. His joyful expression disappeared.

“No, I mean I don’t remember, probably, I think so actually, but then he left outside to chill with a few friends while I stayed inside for the event”

“And then???” You chuckled at how your friend was excited

“Then someone texted me to check on him because he was drunk, so I left the gala to join him. They were three including him, a man that I didn’t know and Selena Gomez”

“What? I’m so curious for what is about to happen next”

“I’m not, because I was trying to like contain him because he was fucking flirting with Selena like I wasn’t sitting next to him” your friend laughed

“What a dream” she said still laughing

“So like he cheated on you?” Pedro asked confused

“I don’t know I woke up right after, but they were very close, like physically, and about to kiss. If I wouldn’t have been here, I think he would have”

“So after this dream Garrett is your crush?” Pedro wanted to know

“Not really, I do find him very cute and I wouldn’t be mad to see him in front of me, but that’s it”

“That’s kind of a crush” Pedro corrected you

“Whatever it was just a dream”

“I’ll say almost a nightmare” your friend joked

“I got to be his girlfriend, I think there’s worse like nightmare”

“That’s true” she said as she got up. “I’ll be right there just need to go to the bathroom” you watched her leave, your eyes falling on Pedro who seemed upset.

“Are you okay?” You asked a little worried

“Yeah yeah” he answered dryly. There was a silent for a second. “Why didn’t you tell me about this dream?”

“Why would I tell you? It’s just a dream” you retorted “I have a lot of weird dreams, we generally don’t speak of it in general so”

“I know, it’s just, I’m sleeping next to you while you think of someone else”

“Mister Pascal are you jealous ?” He didn’t say anything “I don’t think of anyone else, it’s not my fault I dream of people, I don’t control my subconscious” you calmly said. “Just like you can’t help being a bit jealous” his upset expression was changing into a smile

“I’m sorry” he apologized “it’s true it’s just a dream-”

“It’s okay, I’m a bit jealous too so” you shrugged. You scooted closer to him, resting your head on his chest as he wrapped his arm around your neck. He kissed your head.

Your friend came back and you continued your conversation, changing the subject as you were done with it. A little jealousy is fine when it’s not jeopardizing your relationship.

Out of curiosity, do you think there's any actor that you love so much you would write for them in any role? Just asking because there's a lot of actor overlap in your master list (for example, Garrett Hedlund as Benny and Mitch) and some where you like one role but not another (for example, Jesse Lee Soffer as Wes, but not as Jay). Just kind of tying back to your question about Soldier Boy, and if people like the character simply because it's Jensen Ackles, curious if there's any particular actor you love so much?

So this kind of feeds into my thing about people writing for actors/celebrities and not characters. I am a very big character driven writer, I fall in love with the characters not the actors because… you get to know the characters, you can truly never know the actor.

You can watch as many interviews as you like and gather all the info you can on a celebrity but that face they’re showing you, it’s not real, it’s a very carefully cultivated image. You don’t get to see them when they’re upset, know how they handle grief/sadness – what little thing they do first thing in the morning, learn what their nervous habit is. You don’t get to know how they really feel about certain things because you can bet a PR person is whispering in their ear reminding them you can’t say THAT.

Also writing about real people gives me an ick because it crosses over the line from imaginary fantasy to actual real fantasy. < which I think is far too intense with some people. I always consider how would you feel if you found out someone you had never met was writing in-depth sexual fantasies about you? Could you imagine reading one? I can tell you from experience it’s not something that makes you feel good, it’s a very scary thing. It literally gives you this feeling of nausea in the pit of your stomach and this creeping sensation in your spine. It's very hard to reconcile with, and very off putting.

Writing for characters is very different, actors can separate themselves from characters and go,  yea you know what, I probably would give banging him a thought too if it wasn’t me playing that role. They can understand that because they AREN’T that person, although they may put elements of themselves/experiences in them to bring the character to life.

The short answer to your question is my like is for the characters, not for the actor. If you are writing across the board like that you aren’t writing for a character, you are writing for an actor and that’s fine, it plays into the whole wish fulfilment writer thing I’ve mentioned in the past. – But it’s not my cup of tea.

Personal notes: Hi everyone, long time no talk. This is the shortest video I’ve ever transcribed and maybe my first time transcribing a video without auto-captions. Also, I just realized this is my first video I've transcribed that isn't a YouTube video. I'm finally working on the mera video and all it took for me to get back into it was just reformatting the transcript that I currently have. Yes, I'm a Triple Frontier fan. I’ve watched it the moment it got released a few years ago. I’ve watched more interviews, scene clips, and gif sets of Triple Frontier content than I did back in 2019. It was an interesting December 2023 for TF fan me. I can't wait for Triple Frontier 2: Santiago's Electric Boogaloo. That’s not the official title but I’m gonna jokingly call it that until we get official promo like a trailer or poster. I'm cherishing that interview/news we got that Charlie is a producer for the sequel.

If you want to support Garrett Hedlund, there are many ways to go about it. You can watch some of his projects like his movies, audio dramas, and TV shows. Personal Notes: So I got distracted while editing the mera video transcript and found myself back into the Triple Frontier fandom. I haven't been here since 2019 so it's been a hot minute. I transcribed this video because there is a section in the middle that is so funny to me that I almost had to hold my breath transcribing it. Rewatching these interviews really shows the golden retriever personality of Garrett that I didn't fully notice until like a few month ago when I got distracted back into the Triple Frontier and Garrett fandom. The video is funny because it literally cuts Garrett off because he got excited that Charlie was excited and Oscar was excited and -

Anyways, I don't know when I'll finish the mera video I have been working on. I think it's been maybe half a year. I have one in particular i think you will like. it comes directly from a very specific trivia fact from the production of the film i know.

In an Interview revisiting his carreer ( let me know if you want the link) Garrett Hedlund revealed that in an early version of the script Patroclus was going to be introduced as an artistic boy. Garrett himself suggested to Wolfgang Petersen he should show up attempting to write some poetry and the idea was initially taken.

The script changed and we got the combat training with Achilles as introduction, but this initial idea felt very fitting to his character for me regardless of the idea being deleted. Given how invested Patroclus is on epic stories, it wouldn't surprise me to find him trying to write his own epic poems out of some random battle story Achilles tells him.
