The MIT Bike Lab: A place for community, hands-on learning

Bianca Champenois SM ’22 learned to ride a bike when she was 5 years old. She can still hear her sister yelling “equal elbows!” as she pushed her off into the street. Although she started young, her love of bikes really materialized when she was in college.

Champenois studied mechanical engineering (MechE) at the University of California at Berkeley, but with a first-year schedule comprising mostly prerequisites, she found herself wanting more hands-on opportunities. She stumbled upon BicyCal, the university’s bike cooperative.

“I loved the club because it was a space where learning was encouraged, mistakes were forgiven, and vibes were excellent,” explains Champenois. “I loved how every single bike that came into the shop was slightly different, which meant that no two problems were the same.”

Through the co-op’s hands-on learning experience, the few long rides she took across some of California’s bridges like the Golden Gate, and the lively evening “Bike Parties” drafting behind friends, Champenois’s love for biking continued to grow. When she arrived at MIT for her master’s studies, she joined the cycling team.

Champenois, who is also passionate about climate action, enjoyed the sense of community the cycling team offered, but was looking for something that also allowed her to solve problems and work on bikes again.

After discovering there wasn’t a comparable cooperative bike program at the Institute, Champenois was determined to start one herself. It wasn’t long before she secured club funding from The Coop’s Public Service Grant with the support of her peer, Haley Higginbotham ’21, who was also passionate about the cause. By the end of the year, the team had gained two more volunteers, civil and environmental engineering graduate student Matthew Goss and materials science and engineering grad student Gavin Winter, and the MIT Bike Lab was born.

“The idea is to empower people to learn how to fix their own bike so that they are motivated to use biking as a reliable transportation method,” says Champenois. The volunteer mechanic has a vested interest in promoting sustainability and improving urban infrastructure.

Champenois is a graduate student in the joint Mechanical Engineering and Computational Science/Engineering program, and her research involves applying data science and machine learning to fluid dynamics, with a specific focus on ocean and climate modeling. The NSF Graduate Research Fellow is now building upon prior research focused on ocean acidification as part of her PhD thesis, while she is also involved in other projects within Professor Themis Sapsis’s Stochastic Analysis and Nonlinear Dynamics (SAND) Lab.

“I appreciate that my research strikes a balance between more applied environmental projects and more theoretical statistics and computational science,” she explains while referencing a recent research contribution to a project focused on improving global climate simulations.

Champenois’s academic research focus may be specific, but she stresses that the Bike Lab isn’t targeted to any particular interest and welcomes all who are eager to learn.

“If you’re interested in solid mechanics, you can think about bike frames. If you’re interested in material science, you can think about brake pads. If you’re interested in fluids, you can think about hydraulic brakes,” she says. “I think there’s something for everyone, and there’s always something to learn.”

In the last year-and-a-half, the Bike Lab is estimated to have serviced over 150 bikes, and they’re only getting started. Champenois is ambitious about the Bike Lab’s future.

“I hope to teach classes, maybe throughout the semester or as a standalone IAP [Independent Activities Period] course. I am also really interested in the idea of managing a vending machine for parts,” states Champenois.

In the winter, the Bike Lab stores its tools in N52-318, but the club lacks the space needed to expand. “Without our own space, it is difficult for us to store parts, which means that people are required to bring their own parts if their repair requires a replacement,” explains Champenois.

While physical space isn’t required to build a sense of community, Champenois envisions the Bike Lab exuding the same sort of camaraderie as the Banana Lounge, another of one MIT’s student-run spaces, one day.

“I like to think of the Bike Lab as more than just a bike shop. It’s also a place for community,” she says.

Champenois hopes to complete her degree in the next year or two and would like to become a professor someday. She is excited by a career in academia, but she says she could also see herself working on a climate or weather research team or joining an ocean technology startup.

Many have heard the expression that being a student at MIT is like “drinking from a firehose,” but that is one of the things Champenois will miss most when she leaves.

“I have had the opportunity to discover so many new hobbies and been able to learn so much through sponsored activities,” she recalls. “Most importantly, I’ll miss the great people I have met. Everyone at MIT is so curious and hardworking in a way that is truly energizing.”

hi! i just came across your blog from a search and i was wondering if you have any recommendations of where/what to read about Wicca or spirituality, it’s something thats always peaked my interest and i feel connected too with lack of better wording and i just would like to learn more about the history and culture and i was wondering if you have any recommendations :)

Hey there! My favorite books for newbies, or the curious are Scott Cunningham's Wicca for the Solitary Practitioner, and Paganism: A guide to Earth Based Religions by Joyce and River Higginbotham.

Some authors I love and recommend, are Starhawk, Margot Adler, Christopher Penczak, Amber K, Kelden, Jason Mankey, Thorn Mooney @thornmooney , Timothy Roderick, and Raymond Buckland. Some are older works, some are more contemporary.

I would personally avoid Silver Ravenwolf, Skye Alexander, Gavin and Yvonne Frost, and there are several "ghost writers" with "books" available on Amazon, its a really big issue so be sure to be cautious when you are reading anything, and even with my recommendations, and my avoid list, read it and see what you get out of it. I am not here to tell you how to be your own kind of witch, I am here to offer up my advice based solely on my experience through the world.

9 Years.

Apparently, yesterday was my 9-year Tumblr anniversary. I only noticed because, my sheer coincidence, I logged in to post today. Happy birthday!

Last week, I released the first new episode of the Emerald City Video Podcast in a long while. Zach Roberts and I have actually recorded a few that never made their way to the internet, since it takes an act of God to make me actually do any editing. I’ll be working on that.

For anyone who hasn’t listened to it before, the Emerald City Video Podcast is named after a video store (which no longer exists) in Syracuse, New York. I worked there in college, and loved it. There, I learned to love movies I never would otherwise have given a chance, and also fell in love with the idea of collecting movie props. We had them everywhere, and I came to realize how cool it is to have an actual, tangible piece of something you love. I have worked on this podcast for more than 7 years, primarily with Zach but occasionally with other guest hosts who worked at Emerald City or other video stores.

You can listen to the new episode here, which is a review of John Wick Chapter 4. It’s a “New Release Wall” episode, which is video store speak for “we went to the movies and recorded our reaction in the car after.” We’re fancy, I know. I didn’t send this episode out as an email blast, because we have another episode coming this week, which I think is a much, much better introduction to ECV for anybody who is just finding us on Substack now, where I'm putting the show so I don't have to pay for hosting.

What have I been up to?

Earlier this month (as I alluded to in my introductory post), I finished the crowdfunding campaign for Time To Be Heroes, my second full book. It’s an oral history of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, featuring interviews with the cast and crew. A lot of what I expect to be posting to Substack will be behind-the-scenes goodness from creating that book, as well as a little ebook companion that I’m planning on putting together that features conversations with comic book creators, fan fiction writers, and other folks who are a big part of the Legends community but likely will not feature prominently in an oral history of the show itself.

I will also be sharing some other side projects. For over a decade now, I have been doing a “director’s commentary”-style column for each issue of Savage Dragon. It has followed me between three different websites, and the first two no longer host any of the old content. So I have a book coming out soon that will collect the first 24 issues of my commentaries, with new introductions to each by Savage Dragon superfan and editor Gavin Higginbotham.

I have had great success with my first two books on crowdfunding platforms, and am currently trying to decide whether to launch a campaign for this — it’s almost completely finished, and my only real expenses will be layout and printing — or just sell it on my online store. It seems the ticking clock of crowdfunding really serves as an incentive to folks, but it feels strange to do another crowdfunding campaign so soon after the Legends one.

My first book, an oral history of the 2001 movie Josie and the Pussycats, is something I’m still very proud of, and it made enough money that I was able to publish The Gold Exchange, a collection of old interviews and columns that serves as an unoffiical companion to Booster Gold comics from 2006 until 2022. The Josie book, The Gold Exchange, and some other stuff is available at JosieBook.com, and Time To Be Heroes will be available in February of next year.

Anyway, that feels like enough for now. I do have some big stuff I want to yell into the void about soon. But…not tonight. Soon.

A Fife derby is upon us this summer’s evening with real implications in the Betfred Cup, as the Pars aim to keep their 100% record going and be two-thirds of the way to reaching the round of 16.

Darren Young’s side are realistically facing elimination if they do not secure three points after recent relegated Peterhead defeated them 1-0 at Balmoor. Circumstances depleted the Methil outfit on Saturday as the former Albion Rovers manager could only name four substitutes.

Young may take solace in the fact he was able to field six of his nine new signings, including Paul Willis, who he brought over with him from the Wee Rovers. Recent acquisitions, Kyle Wilson and Thomas Cordery made up half of the available subs.

Athletic do not have the same squad depth problems as their part-time opponents, and they have in-fact strengthened their first team on Monday with the addition of Dean Shiels. His attacking traits will give Young more to worry about in his preparation, as he has no doubt assiduously watched Athletic’s 6-0 win over Elgin City with a sense of quandary in how to set up his starting 11.

Keys to the game

As expected, Dunfermline performs better against part-time opposition under Allan Johnston with a win percentage of 70.37%. Yet, the more interesting statistic shows that the Pars have a 12% better win percentage on artificial turf rather than grass. The Bayview pitch was recently laid with a 3G surface after being a grass field for 18 years.

One of the reasons behind the jump in win percentage on the “plastic” is the style of play that Johnston has implemented. His brand of football accounts for quicker movement of the ball on the ground when in possession and an emphasis on counter attacking when the opponent gets near their box.

While it has been a few years, and under completely different management when these sides last competed. Johnston and Young have had four battle of wits while in League One when Athletic and Albion took to the park.

Young tended to field a 4-4-1-1, which could easily morph into a 4-5-1 or a 4-2-3-1 when necessary. It appears he has adopted a similar approach on his journey from the west to the east of the country. Johnston has always stuck staunchly to 4-4-2 and expect to see much of the same tonight.

Elgin were impervious to the attacking formation. Especially, out on the right where a couple of the goals were created through Kallum Higginbotham, who had three assists in total. They could not keep on top of Nicky Clark who managed to get off a hat-trick of headers without much of a tussle for the sub six footer.

The combination of Higginbotham and Ryan Williamson on the right side of the pitch work well seeing as the right back likes to hit the byline while the Englishman enjoys coming inside for a wider passing range. Both are players who came up against Mark Docherty, Dumbarton’s left back, last season.

Defensive midfielder, Patrick Slattery, will have to ease as much pressure on the back-line as possible to give East Fife a chance to take something from the match. And to his credit, Young does manage to set up his sides to be extremely difficult to be broken down and get thumped by three or more goals. The prime example is that instance happened on three occasions, only his present club had fewer occurrences of being bodied (2).

St Mirren beat Pars to move 11 points clear

St Mirren moved 11 points clear at the top of the Championship after goals from defenders Harry Davis and Liam Smith overcame Dunfermline.

Davis put his penalty straight down the middle after Danny Mullen was tripped by Jason Talbot, who was sent off.

Three minutes later, Smith struck a sweet low drive into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box.

James Craigen had earlier missed a good chance for Dunfermline when the game was goal-less.

The destination of the title looks increasingly certain to be Paisley, with the Buddies having nine league games left to play.

Second-placed Livingston have a game in hand after their match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday was postponed.

Until the second-half breakthrough, it was a slightly nervous home support as the opening goal failed to arrive as early as the Buddies would have hoped.

Stephen McGinn’s drive was tipped over by Pars goalkeeper Lee Robinson and later Cammy Smith dragged a low effort wide.

The visitors had threatened occasionally, too, with Nicky Clark’s low shot pushed wide by Craig Samson, before Craigen spurned a good opportunity after Daniel Armstrong’s pass.

Championship action returns on Halbeath Road as the second match day of the league season takes place.

Athletic will be aiming to bounce back after a poor performance against Rangers; where they took a drubbing. They already have points on the board unlike their opponents who have not responded well from their relegation in May. New manager, John Robertson, failed to progress them in League Cup group stages before being bested – at home – to Dundee United.

Keys to the game

The loss of Greg Tansey and Ross Draper:

Two lumberjacks in the centre of the park that can control any game have departed the Caledonian Stadium to stay in the Premiership. There is now little to no control in the middle of the park as the Caley Jags with have no recognisable central midfielder. Iain Vigurs is there and out of position as he would prefer to play wide left. Nat Wedderburn should be relishing being able to mark him out the game.

The threat of Iain Vigurs:

The former Staggie netted a hat-trick the last time these two sides met; which was at East End Park. On that day in July he was stationed as an attacking midfielder with himself and Billy King embarrassing the Dunfermline back line that night. Of the players at the club, only Vigurs and centre forward, John Baird, carry any sort of threat that should worry the Pars.

Redemption:

Being thumped 5-1 against a side that would go onto be relegated must have been unpleasant. Yet, this is a much changed side from last. Robertson has them set up in a 4-4-2 as opposed to the 4-2-3-1 that Richie Foran preferred. Eight of the 17 that were available for selection last year are still at the club and two of them are the third and fourth choice goalkeepers.

The changes have not been quite as drastic for Athletic but there has been seven players that departed who were starting or on the bench that evening. However, Joe Cardle, Kallum Higginbotham, Lee Ashcroft and Ryan Williamson will want to prove that Tuesday was a blip in their season and beat up on a team that showed them up in front of their own supporters.

Bouncing back:

Pars were five games unbeaten until they met Rangers at Ibrox, who stopped them going six by scoring six. The most optimistic of fans could only hope that they gave the Govan outfit a game, but that went out the window within 10 minutes. It is how Allan Johnston’s men respond which will be important, not the disappointment of the League Cup exit. A win would at least keep them in the top four; a position which they desire come the end of the campaign. A victory over a fellow playoff contender will solidify a good couple of weeks in the league season.

Being glib, Caley Thistle have not bounced back since winning the Scottish Cup in 2015. The fear for them is “doing a St Mirren” and by continuously going for the cheap and lazy option you end up flirting with another relegation. They need to get a good result somewhere to quell the fear of the supporters. This would be a start, but the longer it drags on, the louder the fans become.
