The PROS And CONS Of Marriage In 2020
Marriage bureau Fewer and fewer men are looking to get married. These days the Pew Research Institute recently found that the number of men ages 18 to 34 saying. A successful marriage is one of the most important things that dropped from 35 percent to 29 percent since 1997. The number of young adult women saying the same thing has risen from 28 percent to 37 percent in the same time. This statistic made me wonder why so many guys out there are saying. They don't want to get married there seems to be a growing subculture of guys. Who says they'd rather avoid it altogether? I grew up thinking that marriage is just what you do when you hit a certain age now.If any want to marry then visit Pak Marriage Bureau Happy married life I'm questioning why do we get married, where did the tradition come from and what are the pros and cons. This article will aim to answer these questions and see how marriage fits into the modern-day culture. But first, let's take a quick look at the history of marriage. The first humans who lived about 5 million years ago had very little use for marriage using the behavior of bonobos is the basis for how early humans would have behaved. It is presumed that early males and females had sex with many partners. They lived in open polyamorous communities where food was exchanged for sexual favors. Couples therapy Because females could collect food fruits nuts and insects while still caring and protecting their baby’s males were not needed as protectors or providers. This meant that neither partner gained from being in a committed pair as the climate heated up the forests receded and humans ventured out into the savanna. We began walking upright hunting with tools and our brains got bigger our large brain sizes. The reason human babies are born so helplessly early and require constant care from their mothers. During the period of 1.8 million to 23,000 years ago survival was hard and the offspring that had the best chance to reach adulthood. Divorce Those that had two parents that work together to raise and protect them. This survival strategy gave birth to first marriages. These were not quite like the marriage as we imagine today couples. In this period would stay together for about three or four years. Before one or the other would wander off to start another family. Perhaps this is why divorce rates peak between three to four years and modern-day marriages relationship dynamics completely changed. When humans began to grow their own food, agriculture meant that humans were permanently tied to the land. The most productive household arrangements were ones in which men and women divided their tasks men, who were physically stronger worked the land while women stayed closer to home and cared for children. Love marriage This is the era in which marriage became a lifelong union between two people that was recognized by their community. Agriculture tied people to their land meaning that at the end of the four-year period. Neither men nor women had any inclination to wander off and find a new family. So, they stayed together and worked as a unit to feed and care for their children. The creation of marriage is a legal contract between men and women came into being over time. As communities settled and monogamous relationships became a necessity for long product life. So, the real origin of marriage came from the biological desire of both men and women to see their children survive. Marriage It was the evolutionary dominant strategy in the last few thousand years marriage became less about a survival strategy and more about a way to control power. It became a tool to strengthen alliances maintain wealth solidify social class control female sexuality and fulfill religious duties. Arranged marriages were the norm around much of the world up until the mid-20th century. So now most of us watching this live in a society filled with abundance. We're at the top of the food chain and we don't have to defend ourselves from saber-toothed Tigers. Anymore many of us are not strictly religious or rural farmers our parents aren't arranging us. New marriage We don't need to form an alliance between kingdoms like in Game of Thrones. So, you may be wondering, why are we still getting married. We no longer need the institution of marriage to ensure the survival of our species live doesn't have to be a conveyor belt of common events. Where you graduate at this age start a family at that age and retire at this age. These are ideas that many Millennials are discovering and are a primary cause of the steady decline in new marriages. Each year about 5% it's beginning to be seen by many as an outdated restricting institution that simply not worth it. People keep getting married at older ages in the 1960s. Best age to get married Over half of Americans under 30 were married the average age of marriage for a woman was about 20. The average age for men was 23. Today only 20 percent of people under 30 are married and the average age for women is 26 and a half and for men is nearly 29. So, let's take a look at some of the pros and cons of modern-day marriage. First, the pros of marriage are the ultimate showcase of commitment an unbreakable love bond through sickness and health. But there are numerous legal financial social and health advantages to getting hitched. for more details about marriage click Pak marriage bureau Marriage benefits The legal benefits a married couple is seen as a single taxable unit in the eyes of the government. In most cases, this will save money on taxes when you claim your spouse is dependent. There are estate planning benefits including inheritance rights government benefits in receiving Social Security Medicare. Disability benefits for your spouse employment benefits such as obtaining health insurance through your spouse's employer. The right to take medical leave to care for a spouse who becomes ill decision-making benefits including the right to make medical decisions. If your spouse is incapacitated consumer benefits such as family rates for health homeowners auto. Other types of insurance financial benefits financial benefits a 2005 study at Ohio State University found that after getting married people saw a sharp increase in the level of wealth. After 10 years of marriage, the couples reported an average net worth of around forty-three thousand dollars single people. At the same age had a net worth of only eleven thousand dollars. However, people who got divorced were worse off than any other group. After a divorce, the average man was left with $8,500 in assets. While the average divorced woman had only $3,400 health benefits health benefits research has continued to show that married people live longer. The stability of a long marriage can act as a support structure throughout life. When one spouse is weak the other gives care happily wedded patients. Who undergoes major surgery are more than three times as likely to still be alive 15 years later? When compared to their unmarried counterparts. There are also many perceived social benefits married people appear to be more stable committed and reliable having a long-standing marriage shows. The world that at least someone can tolerate you in the history of America. There have only been two unmarried presidents. The last one was Grover Cleveland in 1886 and he got married shortly into his first term. So, a successful marriage can certainly lead to a happy healthy long life. Divorce They're fun and we all like cake but the average wedding costs about $30,000 over a third of married couples go into debt to pay off the big day. Half of those newlyweds are still paying the tab five years later chances are by the time. You're finished paying off your wedding. There will be time to start paying for your divorce roughly half of all marriages in the US and in divorce. This is another big reason Millennials don't see the value in marriage anymore. Why start something if it's probably going to fail much of the millennial generation grew up with single or divorced parents. Their entire youth was back and forth between bickering parents overhearing never-ending conversations of legal disputes and custody battles. Another huge factor contributing to men's disinterest in marriage is the fact that marriage isn't. Late marriage What it used to be a hundred years ago having a wife meant having someone who would raise your kids, clean your house, and cook your meals. This may not be an ideal dynamic for everyone. But men used to have much to gain from getting married. Now there are more women than men in the workforce and more women than men have college degrees much like. The bonobo's many women today no longer need a man to provide for them. There seems to be a direct correlation between the liberation of women. The decline in men seeking marriage in areas where women are highly educated and career-oriented. Stable marriage The marriage rates are the lowest although marriage rates continue to decline both men and women agree. That parenting is still a high priority 52% of Millennials say that being a good parent is one of the most important things in life. While only 29% assign high importance to get married. This shows that Millennials don't think that they necessarily need to be married in order to have a family. Many are choosing to avoid the headache and create a love bond and raise kids on their own terms. There are plenty of legal alternatives to getting married like a domestic partnership civil union or creating a will. The truth is you can have just about all the benefits of marriage without actually getting married. You can have a lifelong partner who supports your goals and you can have a soulmate; you can have a family a shared home financial wealth and good health without the state mandated license. So maybe those bonobos had it right. All along do your own research to assess your own goals and list your priorities. If your goal is to travel the world and check out the tinder scene in every city. Maybe marriage isn't right for you that does not pressure yourself.

H.E.A.L.T.H. What is it?
For many years, ive been trying to get all these beautiful inspiring stories out of my head and out into the public. I believe that I have a message and maybe my delivery is off but its there....  There is no right or wrong way to deliver a message because it truly comes down to the perception of the receiver, not you that creates the problem. If you have a message to share with the world.. share it, and if the world isn't ready, thats there issue, not yours. So here’s mine.... well a small piece of it...
Have you ever thought about what the true definition of health is? Is the worlds definition of health congruent with your own definition? How did you come to your own way of health or do you follow others and envision yourself as them maybe when you were completely out of balance with yourself. Or did you do research on ways to quick fix your health Hit?
There are so many ways we can view health and in each one of us, its different. Take a smoker of 30 years.....    If you or someone you know has smoked for a very long time and are thinking about quitting, you know its gonna be stressful. Even if you are 100% committed to giving up the filthy habit and saying good rides, the body and mind are going to, at some point be in stress overload. The nasty chemical of nicotine has adapted inside your body and your cells feed off of them but then ll of a sudden, you are suffocating the fuel for which stimulated the craving when they were on empty... So your brain thinks, “feed me nicotine, feed me oral fixation.”
No patch, gum or physical ailment has ever been the true reason some someone killing the habit. The real healing and transformation comes from the energetic balance between what our mind is telling our body, and what forces surround us in our environment the controls our cravings within our body.
For 12 years, I smoked very heavy cigarettes. Not the Light to Ultra light brands but the stuff the big boys, construction workers, mechanics, Beer Bellied red necks, used to smoke. My mom allowed me to smoke as many cigarettes as I wanted, just as long as I only smoked cigarettes and nothing else.
In June 1999, after a car accident nearly caused my death, I was awaked into a new light and mindset. Still smoking cigarettes, going to church and attending local exercise classes, my perception to things was different.
After 4.3 drooling months of battling a disconnect of me headspace and my Mind Body Spirit connection being in OFF mode, I was turn on with more voltage and internal power than ever before.
In October 1999, 2.5 weeks after I was forced to drop out of high school, I was blown away that something so big, and active was living inside of my head. I asked myself, how could this tumor, be so unkind to just appear out of the blue and say, “That’s it Lady, POWER OFF.”
I was a senior in High School, passionate about hospitality, working for Marriott hotels 23-28 hours a week in front office operations and selling shoes at Nine West 13-17 hours/week M-F. Marriot was a Fri-Sat-Sunday job with Holidays for  the additional overtime. After my accident, I lost my job at the shoe store however Marriott loved my positive energy and life force I expelled to guests while they checked in, even when I couldn't see over the front Desk front sitting in a chair from Pain. Although I felt much loved at this hotel, I would soon be discharged from here as well.
October 24th, 1999, after my first attempt to get my GED, the equivalent to a High School Diploma, I failed. I felt horrible with my life. I had no job because of my disability, I quit high school and barely saw my friends, no driver license because they were taking from me by the State of Ohio for safety of other drivers and I was smoking 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day. How was I able to come out of this mess and go from SURVIVING to THRIVING?                           It certainly wasnt some Miracle pill or Reconstructive Surgery that changed me from the outside to inspire my inside......  It came from within me! How I looked at the physical things around me, how I gave thanks to everything, even a bird dropping its poo poo on my head while trying to sunbathe next to my neighbors pool, or having a check for $3.84 bounce over a pack of cigarettes. What taught me the greatest life comeback in these scenarios.
It was a wet and muggy Wednesday morning in October, the 27th to be exact, when my mom dreaded waking at 745am to take me to get a second opinion from a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic office near my small hometown. She had finished work at 1130pm the previous night to only arrive home around 1215am from the heavy rain that evening. My first appointment was at 830am.
There were actually several appointments scheduled that day however my mom had to be at work by 1pm and wasnt able to take me to all of my appointments. After the first appointment, we decided to skip the potential MRI and take me to grandma’s house.
For the next 9 months, until June, the summer of 2000, I stayed with grandma. It was a much happier place to be. Grandma had 3 fun loving dogs, a pool with a beautiful wooden deck big enough for 5-7 lawn chairs, and my aunt Kathy living within walking distance. Kathy smoked and she was more like a smoking buddy. I was able to make some money mowing yards for the neighbors and helping grandma with the house and her dogs. In June, I got my driver license back and went on a mission to find a job that would give me independence away from everyone! It was the greatest stepping stone into womanhood I could've ever taken.
After attempting to retrieve my job with Marriott and being unsuccessful, an amusement park on the lake outside of cleveland contacted me for a summer job at one of their hotels in the park. Cedar Point is the PRIME ROLLERCOASTER park in the USA. Without hesitation, I took the job and moved 2.5 hours away in a cabin villa with 2 other girls, for the summer.
Cutting to the chase... at the end of the summer, I felt like i was ready to go back to school and try my HSD again. It didnt take long to see that, this wasnt supposed to be the option for me.
August 2000, just days before school was to begin, mom and I, her friend Cheryl and our long time neighbor were shopping for school supplies at our local Staples Store. Cheryl had MS and I took care of her also. Without her with us, my mom would've been in the Emergency room.
As we were walking out of the store, I started to dauntingly walk a different direction than my mom and Cheryl. Completely disconnect from the world, my mom said she continued to yell at me but I didn't listen. Was I not listening or did I not hear her?
In the moment when my mom gently grabbed my right shoulder to bring me toward our truck, I physically attacked her, bruised her face and she fell on the ground. Immediately she got back up and “started calling me names”, Cheryl said. Before we got to the truck, I came out of this brain freeze and began to ask my mom “Oh My God, what happened to you?”
You can imagine my mom’s confusion, frustration and contemplation as to why I seemed to disillusioned to the event. This object in my brain was moving again and this time caused a disconnect that changed my life traumatically, with myself and my mother.
A week before my Mom’s birthday, September 4, school had only jut begun and I was doing good until the long 3 days weekend for Labor Day. Labor day is the 1st Monday in September and my mom’s birthday happened to fall on that day however our doctors office was closed.
The very next day, with a luck of the draw, Dr Angerman, who I saw the previous years, had a slot open at 9am which my mom booked me without question. The findings were what had been daunting me for more than 15 months.
Ganglioglioma is low-grade tumor of mixed cell type. It is a type of brain tumor that contains properties of both glial cells (responsible for providing the structural support of the central nervous system) and neuronal cells (the functioning component of the central nervous system). It is very rare!! Being rare was one thing but with the location being life threatening inoperable, my mom burst into tears with fears of what to do with me.
My Ganglioglioma treatments included:               Neurosurgery – to remove as much of the tumor as safely possible; surgery is often limited due to the deep, central placement of these tumors within the brain                                                                                                     Chemotherapy – either before surgery to shrink the tumor or to kill cancer cells
Radiation therapy – precisely targeted treatment to control local growth of tumors; not recommended unless the child’s tumor has re-grown due to potential long-term side effects of therapy.
Cleveland Clinic has some of the most highly acclaimed doctors and surgeons in the world. They are one of the best trusted hospital resources for Neurological, Cardiac and Pulmonary operations. With a higher success rate than any other hospital affiliation on the entire planet, Dr Angerman relaxed my mom and assured her that I was in heaven’s hands.  On March 12th, 2001, I became a successful survivor of this rare scare of a brain tumor however the end wasn’t close yet.
After 3 days, I was released from Cleveland Clinic Neurosurgery in Cleveland, Ohio, with 100% full confidence by Neurosurgeon Dr. Morris, that I would recover with no problems. March 16th, while at my grandmothers house, I had a stroke. I was paralyzed on the entire left side of my body for 6 weeks until April 29th 2001......
Dr Morris did an amazing job at my surgery and was the first person and step that gave me internal hope that led to my wellness path to what I call HEALTH however, it was the energy practices of Yoga& Pranayama, which no one in my red neck town had ever heard of), Mindfulness, Chiropractic, proper nutrition and guided imagery that allowed me to transform my mind, come back in tune with my body and provide positive feedback that would change my life, inside and out, forever.
It’s now 18.5 years later, Aug 2019, and my passion for helping people, inspiring wellness and Mind Body Medicine to everyone I meet, especially as a career, gains excitement everyday! My true meaning of HEALTH is Holistic Enhancements Aspiring Longevity Tranquility & Happiness. Because true health starts with me, not with money, a beautiful BMW, fancy vacations or diamonds... It starts at the HEART... tap deep within and you will win.... no matter what you are going through!
When we live life in a state of our own positive definition of HEALTH, whatever it may be, we are creating an art that is unique to us and us only, but its from the heart. Learn to BREATHE... and used the same formula components(letters) to BE HEART!
Sorry for any typos...

This will be a beginners guide from a very eager to learn beginner! I found my first article on the healing power of Crystals and gemstones about 3 years ago. I was so intrigued and wanted to learn as much as I could about these incredible gifts from earth! In this blog post I will share with you all of the most important and most FAQ’s about crystals.
We will discuss how to utilize crystals. Crystals can have an incredibly positive impact on our emotions, overall health and happiness.
A brief history and break down of healing crystals.
Crystals, whether they are considered to be “precious stones” or “semi precious stones” have been used by a variety of cultures/faiths dating back to biblical times. This is a general and more literal explanation of what a crystal is:
” A Crystal or crystalline solid is a solid materials whose constituents ( such as atoms, molecules, or irons) are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all directions”. Single crystals are usually identifiable by their geometric shape, consisting of flat faces with specific, characteristics orientations.”
The word “Crystal” derives from the ancient greek word (Krustallos) meaning both “ice’ and “rock”
Whether they are formed by magmatic, metamorphic processing or the precipitation from water. (which is what creates the different types of druses or quartz) They are extremely beautiful and miraculous creations!
Some general basics on healing crystals.
Crystals and gemstones have been known not just for their unique beauty. They’re also known for the healing energies that are inside of these incredible stones. In ancient times crystals were used to distinguish royalty, honor the dead, safeguard villages and homes. They were used for common ailments, assisting in fertility & for spiritual ceremonies.
Some of the most common healing crystals and their meanings & uses.
The 7 essential types of Crystals that are associated with Chakras are:
Amethyst -crown Chakra
Carnelian-sacral Chakra
Yellow Jade- solar plexus
Green Aventurine- heart Chakra
Lapis Lazuli- throat Chakra
Clear crystal- Third eye Chakra
Red Jasper- root Chakra
whether I am working, walking the dog or at an appointment in a waiting room my crystals are always with me.
You don’t have to practice Reiki or use crystals in any one specific way. There are limitless uses, ideas and preferances in which people use and benefit from their crystals.
A few ways you can use and feel the benefits of Crystals are:
Keeping a crystal with you in your pocket, purse or on your desk,
Holding a crystal in your hands. Keeping it close to your skin such as, wearing it on a necklace or bracelet
Having crystals on your desk or in your workspace
Putting a crystal(s) on your night table or dresser in your bedroom.
Placing certain crystals under your pillow (or inside your pillowcase) for a restful and peaceful nights sleep.
Placing crystals around your home and office/workspace

I created this little space for meditation, prayer, journaling and having quiet time to truly feel and connect with my crystals. This area is my special space inside my “Cloffice” my home office & walk in closet combination!! To see more of my DIY attic to Cloffice project CLICK HERE!!
How I use my Crystals in my daily life, both with my day to day routine and work.
I think of my crystals as a source of strength, comfort, inspiration and motivation. Whether they are in my pillowcase (for a much needed restful nights sleep) or on my desk (for concentration and inspiration) my beloved stones are never far away.
Feeling the affects of the crystals for me, has been a sense of comfort, peace, strength and inspiration. It can be as simple as feeling the motivation and “pick me up” I need to complete my daily tasks. Crystal healing has made a huge impact on my emotional & physical well being.
There will always be debate on how, why and “IF” Crystals can actually “heal”. For me, however it is as simple as knowing how I feel. I personally FEEL better and felt a difference in my overall mood and emotional state.
So I don’t really need to prove or explain that to anyone who thinks otherwise. I do, however fee it is important to at least share my own personal experiences. My hope is that it may also have the same positive impact on you too!
Do you already have a Crystal collection started? Which Crystals and stones have impated your life? I would love to know which Crystals you’re currently working with. Tell me your thoughts and most used Crystals in the comments. You can also message me directly on Facebook and Instagram!
I would love to hear from you! If you found this post helpful please share! Know someone who is interested in learning more about Crystals? Be sure to send them this post!

Masks at the Campfire: Summer Camps for Kids With Medical Needs Adapt to Covid
Olivia Klassen’s face lights up when she talks about summer camp. She loves to do the scavenger hunt with her camp friends. She also loves paddleboarding, swimming in the lake and “kitchen raids.” But what she loves most is being surrounded by kids who, just like her, have Type 1 diabetes — which allows her to focus on having fun instead of being different.
Tumblr media

“Camp is a top priority for me,” Klassen, 13, said of Camp Ho Mita Koda. “I don’t really feel the same without camp. That’s my second family, my home away from home. Being there makes me feel like a normal kid, because everyone is doing the same things I do.”
Camp Ho Mita Koda, in Newbury Township, Ohio, is one of about 300 American summer camps focused on people with special health concerns, including developmental disabilities or dietary and medical needs, said Colette Marquardt, executive director of the American Camp Association’s Illinois office. It is one of the few overnight special needs camps that remained in-person last year, and it will welcome campers again this year even though it could be months more before kids younger than 12 can be vaccinated against covid-19.
While mitigating the risk of covid infections at any of the country’s approximately 15,000 camps is a priority, it is an imperative for camps hosting people who might be at higher risk of serious illness, Marquardt said. Last summer, many medical camps developed “virtual camps” — often with care packages containing supplies for art projects and other camp activities — after organizers were unable to overcome logistical, equipment and staffing needs to operate in person safely.
Some medical camps will remain virtual this summer, while others are easing back into in-person activities with shortened overnight camps, day camps and family camps. Camp Ho Mita Koda, building off last summer, will offer weeklong overnight camps again this year with multiple layers of protocols in place.
Tumblr media
The camp will again have fewer campers each session and will require physical distancing, covid testing and quarantining by staff members — most, if not all, of whom will have been vaccinated. Campers, who will be organized into small cabin cohorts that will stay together for the duration of the camp, will be required to wear masks when engaging with anyone outside their cohort. Masks will not be required while sleeping, eating, swimming or showering.
“Families and kids want and need camp,” said Ian Roberts, director at Camp Ho Mita Koda. “It is pretty evident with the number of registrations we see each week.”
Special needs camps commonly offer traditional activities such as swimming, zip lining, horseback riding and archery, but they also fill a powerful role for campers and their families, said Marquardt. A camper may be the only kid in their school who has diabetes or a food allergy or uses a wheelchair — which can feel isolating. But at camp, they are surrounded by people with the same or similar challenges. They also get a chance to experience independence and take part in activities they may have thought were off-limits before.
“It’s a place where the people who go to camp get to do the things they see other kids doing that they didn’t think they could do,” said Arbie Hemberger. Her 46-year-old daughter, Cindy, who has mild cerebral palsy, has attended an Easterseals camp in Nebraska since she was 6.
Tumblr media
Because special needs camps have medical staffers on-site, they often provide a respite for parents who lack other caregivers for their kids. Hemberger, who lives in Nebraska, said she didn’t have anyone with whom she could easily leave her daughter when Cindy was young. So camp became the one week each year she and her husband could relax and take some time for themselves.
“You don’t have to worry about her because you know she’s with people who know what to do and are going to take good care of her,” she said.
While many of the traditional summer camps that offered in-person sessions last year operated safely by following guidelines from the American Camp Association, as well as rules from local and state health departments, there were exceptions.
For example, at a Wisconsin overnight camp for high school students, 76% of students and staffers tested positive for covid after one camper developed symptoms. The camp had required negative tests prior to arrival. While staffers were required to wear masks, campers were not, and physical distancing was not observed in sleeping cabins.
“While there were definitely stories of camps that had outbreaks, most did not,” said Marquardt. With a year of experience, she said, camps are in an even better position to operate safely this year.
However, for some special needs camps, the risk remains too great — at least for this summer.
The American Diabetes Association’s 23 overnight and 20 day camps will remain virtual this year, with organizers hoping to return to in-person events next year. Michelle Foster, program director, said it was just too risky to operate so many camps across the country while navigating local coronavirus regulations and case rates, as well as securing enough equipment and personnel. Diabetes can be a complicating factor for covid.
Foster said she thinks the ADA will continue to offer at least some virtual camp options well into the future because they reach more people throughout the country — and abroad — who may not otherwise be able to attend.
This summer, Easterseals Nebraska will offer its virtual camp, but it also has developed a variety of in-person programs this year, including an overnight campout at the Omaha zoo, and “sampler camps” with two hours of activities, such as fishing or crafts.
Cindy Hemberger and her mom began registering her as soon as they got word she could attend a three-day day camp, in which campers will meet at a different location, like a zoo or state park, each day.
“It was fun to do it in virtual, but I wanted to do it in person,” Cindy said. “It’s important.”
Jami Biodrowski, the camp’s director, agreed. The camp has served people ranging in age from 5 to 86. Attendees include people of all abilities, including those who require wheelchairs or have autism or mental health challenges. In the past, some younger campers didn’t have special needs but were the siblings of campers, or their parents wanted them to spend time with people who have different needs.
Biodrowski said the isolation and lack of connection so many people have felt during the pandemic is what life is regularly like for many of her campers. And for them, the pandemic just exacerbated those issues.
“We knew we were important before, but man, now we really know,” she said.
In Ohio, Roberts was determined last summer to bring kids back to the now 92-year-old Ho Mita Koda, which he described as “a world-class camp that just happens to do diabetes very well.” Like other directors of special needs camps, he hears from parents and campers — past and present — that the sense of independence and the friendships made with others who experience life the same way helps inspire the kids to more confidently embrace a future with diabetes.
Olivia Klassen, who lives in the western suburbs of Cleveland, first attended camp in 2019, shortly after she was diagnosed. She and her family were a bit in shock, and she was embarrassed to answer questions about the bag of medical supplies she had to keep with her at all times. Her parents said that, when they picked her up on the last day of camp, she was joyful and determined. She organized a diabetes awareness day at her school a few months later, and now runs Instagram and YouTube accounts dedicated to talking about life with diabetes.
“I do not think Olivia would be where she is today with her diagnosis had it not been for camp,” said Sandi Klassen, her mom. “That was just a huge catalyst in showing her that, first off, you are not alone and that, second, you are capable of doing more than you think you are. It’s life-changing.”

How to deal as COVID-19 imposes social distancing
Caleigh Stanier won’t be going to the Mock Trial State Championship that her team qualified for. This 17-year-old junior at Iowa City High School also won’t appear in her school musical in April. Her situation probably sounds familiar. The coronavirus pandemic has prompted schools across the world to close, sports to shut down and extra-curricular activities to cease.
People are being asked to maintain more than a cough’s distance from each other. This so-called social distancing is meant to slow the spread of COVID-19. But it’s also changing how kids can interact — and greatly curtailing their activities.
Tumblr media
The COVID-19 pandemic sidelined Caleigh Stanier from a school musical and more this spring. This has left the Iowa City High School junior both disappointed and worried.C. Stanier
“I think I’m probably the most worried out of all my friends,” Caleigh says. “I think mostly it’s just disappointment — all the things we’ve worked for, with national and state champs now canceled. But that’s just what has to happen.”
News about the pandemic seems to have taken over every website, social media app and television station. Kids understandably have a lot of questions about all of this. Sometimes, those questions turn into deeper concerns, worries or even anxiety.
Keep in mind, that’s totally normal, psychologists say. And it’s mostly a good thing.
Also, you’re not alone. Science News for Students talked to lots of kids around the country. Many share the same concerns. Topping their list? Missing out on trips and activities, and fear of grandparents falling ill.
“Anxiety is normal and helpful,” says Amy Lee. She’s a psychologist at the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. COVID-19 is a novel disease that’s causing novel changes to how society is beginning to interact (or not). As such, she says, “It’s OK to feel more anxious about this. It’s something we should be more alert about, more aware, more careful and more thoughtful.” In fact, she says, “Letting ourselves stay a little uncomfortable can be a positive way to cope with uncertainty.”
Explainer: What is anxiety?
Third-grader Elizabeth Bullock, 8, who goes to PS 163 in New York City, is doing a good job of that. “Nobody is really scared or worried. We’re just talking about it a lot,” she says. “And you should try not to touch things that people could have touched. And wash your hands a lot.”
The vibe in high school is similar, says Helen Branson, a 16-year-old sophomore at Los Altos High School in California. “A lot of the adults are really freaked out about it. We are less worried because we aren’t worried about getting sick ourselves, but we are definitely more worried than we were” before her school shut down.
Tumblr media

Concerns and anxiety can sometimes tip into the unhelpful range, however, when your mind exaggerates a threat, explains Lee, the psychologist.
Signs that your worry may be the unhelpful sort include not being able to “turn the worries off,” says Stephen Whiteside. He’s a psychologist who specializes in treating childhood anxiety at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. When someone tells a story about the coronavirus, it’s normal to feel nervous. But it’s not healthy if you can’t stop thinking about it while FaceTiming a friend or if you can’t enjoy the conversation. When you find this happening, tell a trusted adult — such as a parent, grandparent or teacher — how you’re feeling.
You can also use these tips from psychologists to prevent too much anxiety:
Allow yourself to smile
“Humor is a coping mechanism for all of us — kids and adults,” says Whiteside. But, he adds, “Like most things, humor is healthy in moderation … And there are also times when it’s not appropriate. And there are jokes that cross the line.”
Every kid we talked to said there is plenty of joking going on with friends and on social media. As ninth-grader Anna (who asked not to give her last name) from Wayne, Penn., says, “We’re kind of nervous, but we’re making jokes.” Corona-style elbow bump, anyone?
Focus on the positive
This recommendation may be a bit more challenging, but you can think of it as choosing what to focus on. “Being flexible in what we think about is important,” Lee says. “Focus on friends, activities and family that make you feel positive and connected. Notice what else is positive in your life. Take time with friends and family.”
Maintain a routine
“We all benefit from routine, doing things we normally do,” Whiteside points out. If your school has closed, make a daily schedule similar to what you do at school — and don’t forget to budget time for recess and lunch!
Limit media
“It’s important to get news from a trusted source regularly,” says Whiteside. “But it’s also not helpful to read every single story you can.” Phones and other screens are tempting, but overdoing it can be like overindulging in junk food.
So make a pact with your friends to put your screens away during certain times of the day, Lee suggests. Or put your device in a different room. Caleigh Stanier, from Iowa City, turned off Twitter notifications, for instance, when she realized the tweets were leaving her anxious.
Enjoy your friends, just virtually
As government officials advise sheltering in place, you might start to go stir-crazy. But you don’t have to give up chatting or playing games with friends. Just do it from the disinfected confines of your home. You still have phones to carry on true audible conversations and can use apps to see your friends and family as you connect through the internet or Wi-Fi.
Tumblr media
Exercise remains important, even during periods of social distancing. Here, Elizabeth Bullock shows how that’s done in her New York City neighborhood. Gregory Bullock
Get active
There are lots of safe ways you can be active and enjoy physical activity. You don’t have to be in a gym or ball court. If it’s safe to be outside, ask your parents about going for a hike or bike ride. If you’re looking for indoor activities, think about streaming a yoga class or finding a jump rope. You can even run up and down your stairs (time yourself to compete against a family member). I live in Minnesota, and my kids plan to jump into a nearby lake as soon as the ice melts!
Reinforce good hygiene with family members
By now, everyone should know what they are “supposed” to do. The next step is to make sure you wash your hands every time you come indoors or touch mail or packages delivered to the door. This may not become a habit right away. So when you see someone else forgetting to clean the door handles, cough into an elbow or wipe down the remote, gently remind them what they should do — and help get the materials they need. And don’t take offense if they catch you slipping up now and again. Knowing we’re all in this together makes it easier.
Top 10 tips to stay safe during an epidemic
The good news? As a kid, the information you need to protect yourself and your family is pretty simple: Stay healthy and keep your hands clean, Lee says. If a kid does test positive for the novel coronavirus, adults (including doctors, parents and teachers) will make sure they’re safe, and that other adults are safe. It’s good to keep that advice in mind even if the coronavirus starts interfering with your daily life.
And such super-cautious hygiene works. People who go into anxiety-provoking settings for a living have learned how to remain calm in such situations. Take science and medical journalist Laurie Garrett. She interviewed people infected with SARS in China and Hong Kong earlier this century. But she says she didn’t worry about getting sick, because she knew what steps she needed to protect herself.
Accept that conditions may change rapidly
Sixteen-year-old Clara Chaplin recently took a school trip to Italy. While traveling, she didn’t know that the coronavirus outbreak was spreading rapidly throughout that nation.
Explains Clara, “Most of the time we were there, I really hadn’t even thought about the possibility of there being coronavirus. I saw people wearing masks in the airports and thought it was a little ridiculous, honestly.”
She was surprised when officials took every passenger’s temperature upon arriving at the Florence airport.“It wasn’t until the end of the trip when there was first news about cases in Milan. And we hadn’t been anywhere near Milan. So still no one was really worried.”
Back at Bethlehem Central High School in New York, other students and teachers made jokes about coronavirus to the returning students. Still, Clara recalls, “No one was really taking it seriously.” This was all before there were any confirmed cases in New York.
But as the cases in her state started mounting, she suddenly thought: “What if we’re the ones who brought this virus into New York?”
It’s now about three weeks since they returned home, and Clara says, “It seems like coronavirus is everywhere. All week there has been nonstop talk about it at school, and now school has been canceled.”
See all our coverage of the new coronovirus outbreak
She and her friends have a lot of mixed feelings about it. “Some of my friends who had just begun their spring sports seasons are upset because now [their sports] are postponed for at least a month,” she says, “and might be canceled altogether.” Most of her friends admit “that this whole situation doesn’t even feel real. It’s like the whole world is shutting down.” In many ways, it is.
“It’s weird to think that we’re living through such a crisis,” she says, “something that our kids might learn about in their history class. It was kind of just a joke for a while. But now that it really is close to us, and there are confirmed cases in nearby schools, it’s definitely kicked in that this is serious. And I’m glad that we’re taking a lot of precautions.”
So is Caleigh Stanier, from Iowa City. She says the fast-brewing pandemic has prompted her to do some deep thinking about the future and the way we live. The world has become very interconnected, she notes. And humanity just keeps “expanding into areas that were once wilderness and interacting with new pathogens.” This could continue to happen, opening us up to a succession of new, potentially lethal diseases. What’s more, she says, “It shows everything that is weak in our global healthcare system. And I really hope that people can learn from this.”
Voices from Hong Kong
While U.S. schools have just begun closing over coronavirus fears, classrooms half a world away, in Hong Kong, have already been shuttered for two months. Science News for Students asked some middle schoolers there this question: Do you have any fears about the epidemic? Here’s how they answered.
“If I get sick, I worry that my family will not be able to afford the cost of hospital expenses.”
“I worry about how long it takes to get over the virus.”
“I worry that, if I get the virus, I may not know until after I infect my friends and family.”
“They are currently doing autopsies on the victims of coronavirus. So far, they have reported that the lungs are filled with sticky mucus. I worry that, because I have asthma, this makes me more susceptible to develop a serious case of coronavirus.”
“Some reports are saying that within a year, 75 percent of the population will be infected. Will this weaken our immune system to the point where we won’t be able to fight anything?”

After obtaining her BA in Linguistics, Ellie decided to make writing her full-time career and began working on her first full-length historical novel, "The Girl from Berlin." Ellie is continuously enriching her library with new research material and feeds her passion for WWII and Holocaust history by collecting rare memorabilia and documents. During this time, William Joseph attended Ocean County College and graduated with honors and two degrees. While in college, he also attended a creative writing class, where, for the first time, he shared his work with other people. Most days (because it feels like a frozen tundra three quarters of the year) you can find her huddled on her couch, under a blanket with a hot drink in her hand and typing or reading. Stories are her passion. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●     Yolanda Olson is an award winning and international bestselling author. Ally also co-writes with her close friend Michelle Brown under the pen name Ally Michelle. Ally lives in Kent, in the United Kingdom with her husband and stepson. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●   C.F. Rabbiosi: Charity used to be a Registered Nurse in California, and though she doesn't use her two degrees in the field anymore, they have helped her with her real passion- writing. She happily writes the day away using her in depth Anatomy, Physiology and Psych background to make her death scenes more real and her killers more... colorful. But it's not all about the blood, because more than anything she loves hot romance. Her heroines are kick-ass and her men are all the dangerous and gorgeous beasts you love to hate. Her style is beautifully gruesome and inspired by the amazing dark romance/dark erotica writers: Trisha Wolfe, Natalie Bennett, and Jennifer Bene. She lives in the beautiful university city of Columbia, MO with her incredible husband and three girls, and loves yoga- almost as much as living and writing in her own fantasy world. ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

A Dutch care home experiments with housing students with the old
Tumblr media
SORES DUMAN is a normal 29-year-old. He goes to the cinema, follows the Champions League attentively, parties occasionally and talks about life and love with his friends. Later in the week he will see an action movie with his mate Piebe. Before that, he may go to McDonald’s with Martey, another chum. It might take more time than usual for his friends to get ready for these activities. Piebe is 79 and Martey a sprightly 94. Does Sores think his weekend plans are odd? “No, I do similar things with friends my own age. I don’t see the difference in age as an obstacle.”
Mr Duman lives at the Humanitas care home in Deventer, in central Holland. His housemates’ average age is over 85. He has been there for three years, along with five other students from nearby universities and around 150 elderly residents. They are part of a scheme started in 2012 that provides them with free housing in exchange for 30 hours per month of their time living as a “good neighbour”. Only one activity is mandatory: preparing and serving a meal on weekday evenings.

Both parties appear to benefit from the programme. Mr Duman estimates that he has saved over €10,000 ($11,200) in rent. He claims that living in a care home has not impinged on his university experience. “We have big parties here,” he says, pointing to a room for hire that sits empty at night. “We host everything from beer-pong tournaments to yoga classes.” In a promotional video, one resident calls the initiative gezellig, a Dutch word that roughly translates as cosy: “Now and then they put me into the walker and race me through the hall,” she explains.
Onno Selbach, the first student to move in, says he learnt to be more patient as a result of the experience; the pace of life is slower at the home. The scheme has helped attract prospective residents. The home now has a waiting list, which it previously did not. And students are queuing up. When two left the home in April, 27 applied to replace them.
Humanitas is not the first institution to urge old and young people to live together. Municipalities across Spain and care homes in Lyon, France, and Cleveland, Ohio, have also experimented with the idea. A team from Finland visited Deventer and was inspired to start a similar scheme.
Such initiatives could help combat loneliness, an increasing problem across the rich world. The very old, migrants, the sick or disabled, and singletons are most at risk of feeling lonely. It goes hand in hand with social isolation. About 18% of adult EU citizens—some 75m people—see friends or family at most only once a month. Nearly half of Britons over the age of 65 say that television or pets are their main form of company. Loneliness is also reckoned to have serious health consequences: a study from 2015 found that lonely people had on average a 26% higher risk of dying in its seven-year study period than those who were not lonely. And the problem may only get worse. The share of people who are aged over 80 will more than double in the EU by 2080. Social isolation is becoming more common partly because people are marrying later. Creating a space for the elderly to mingle with youngsters can lift spirits—and help cash-strapped millennials. ■

Have you seen the show? If you have - would you mind writing down what happens like the full thing with spoilers, please? I'm really curious about it but I can't seem to understand all that happens from the Papermill audio I have.
i’ll do my best! firstly — there have been quite a few changes between paper mill and broadway, but i’m going to talk about the broadway version since it’s the most current. i’m not going to go into huge detail on every scene, mostly because that would get really long, but i’ll try to explain (my interpretation of) the main story as best i can.
behind a cut because of all the spoilers. super spoilery. you have been warned!
act one.it starts with a prologue, flashing back to the war, an echo of the story donny tells julia about michael’s death in act 2. and then it’s 1945, cleveland, donny is coming home from the war, and everyone is saying that life will be just like it was before, except he can’t sleep, he drinks, he has terrible memories—and despite all of his talent, he can’t get a decent gig, not even at the clubs he was playing in his teens. but he hears about a “tribute to the troops” swing band radio contest hosted by nbc/mgm, where the winners will get to be in a movie. because it’s about the troops, and he’s a veteran, he decides to put together a band of other vets: jimmy (sax; navy, his ship exploded and he was in the water with his dead friends), davy (bass; army, liberated dachau and is an alcoholic because of it), nick (trumpet; was a pow and has huge anger issues), wayne (trombone; marines, has mental health issues/probably ocd), and johnny (drums; was hit by a shell leaving him with severe amnesia, chronic pain, and cognitive problems).
donny also promised michael that he’d look in on his wife if anything happened to him, so he finally works up the courage to visit julia, who invites him for dinner so they can look at some photos of michael from the war. he hears julia sing in church and invites her to sing with the band — first as a guest appearance, then as backup/duets (because she’s a gold star widow, it doesn’t ruin his all-vets gimmick). julia shows donny some poems she wrote in the time after michael’s death, and donny sets one of them to music, love will come and find me again. she agrees to let this be their song for the state-wide contest, which is being held in cleveland.
they win the contest for ohio, which should guarantee them a spot in the new york final. however, it’s not as easy as that; not only will they be forced to participate in ANOTHER preliminary in new york, they have to pay for everything themselves, and call nbc in advance to tell them they’ll be there — because nbc care more about selling the product they’re sponsored by than the contestants. obviously, this is very upsetting for donny & the band, they get pissed off, and the act 1 finale, right this way, is donny deciding that this isn’t going to stop them, they’ve been through too much, and they’re going to find a way to raise the money so they can go first class, because they deserve it after everything.
act two.the first part of act 2 is primarily taken up with them trying to raise enough money to go to new york first class, and stay at a fancy hotel; they’re playing gigs almost constantly, donny and julia come up with a song about cleveland, i got a theory, to raise more, and they’re still nowhere near their total, but donny refuses to let them go any other way than first class, because it’d be letting them & michael down. julia finally grows tired of waiting and pushes donny into telling her how michael died — it was a friendly fire incident, where the conditions were awful, donny accidentally dropped a grenade, told michael to get out of the trench, and the grenade went off; he thought michael had gotten out, but he hadn’t. julia is (understandably) upset by this and doesn’t show up for a gig, leaving the guys to perform alone and them all to wonder if new york is even gonna happen now.
but julia forgives donny, writing a poem about how the war has affected all the guys in the band. donny sets this to music, but it’s so personal and real that they can’t perform it, so she rewrites it into the first welcome home, about a guy returning home from war to his girl. during this time, all the cleveland clubs have been raising money for the band (i assume one of the owners overheard the guys talking about money, though i’m not sure), and have bought them first class train tickets and rooms at the astor, so they can go to new york in style. after a night out in nyc, donny and julia have what would traditionally be the “kiss” moment, except they talk about the fact that this is life, not a movie, so they don’t kiss.
at the studios, they pass the prelim so they can perform on the main show, but jimmy (who is studying law) reads the contracts and discovers at the last minute that nbc/mgm are trying to screw them over. like, literally the last minute; they’re on in 2 more numbers. if they perform love will come and find me again, mgm will own the song outright, they’re only obligated to use the band as walk-ons, and if the band ever wants to perform the song again, they have to pay mgm royalties. for their own song. yep. so the band is upset, and in the end donny decides that they need to slap the contest people in the face: perform a song they’d never dare to put on the big screen, to show everybody listening what it’s really like to be a veteran (that it’s not just like it was before). there’s a this is life reprise here, which talks about how this will take guts but it’s worth it, and also where donny tells julia that he’s madly in love with her, and then they have their Big Kiss moment.
so the band perform the original welcome home, the painful one about what each of the guys goes through every goddamn day, and obviously they don’t win the contest — which is a good thing too because the film sucks, and the end of the show is basically the band talking about how bad the movie is, and then there’s a finale which wasn’t in paper mill, a reprise of nobody. the band now has a “newest record”, which implies they’ve got a record deal, they’re on an international tour, and they still play a lot of gigs at home in cleveland.

What Are Symptoms Of NAS?
What Are Symptoms Of NAS?
What are the symptoms of NAS? How one mom found hope
By Donald Creadore
Jeramay Martinez went through extensive training before she was approved to become a foster mom living in of Espanola, New Mexico. But no one warned her how to look for the symptoms of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, or NAS – a medical diagnosis assigned to the hundreds of thousands of U.S. kids exposed to opioids as a fetus developing in their mother’s womb.
Everything changed for Martinez from the day she brought home her foster son, who’d been born to a 25-year-old local woman struggling with addiction issues and incapable of raising children.
“The first two and a half months are really hard,” says Martinez, recalling her challenges of taking her foster son home after two stressful weeks in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU. “Most people would have freaked out, because he shook, he cried a lot, and he needed comforting…It took a lot of comfort and love but now he’s doing OK.” Before her first experience as a foster mom, Martinez had worried about many things: The hard work she knew would be needed to care for an infant and toddler, and the emotions that might come if and when the time came to hand that child back to her birth mom.
But in many ways, raising a boy born with NAS has proven to be much more challenging than Martinez could have imagined. The constant crying and shaking in those early weeks were followed by stomach problems. And now that her son, born in 2018, is a toddler, he struggles with his motor skills and requires physical, speech, and occupational therapy. And yet Martinez couldn’t imagine life without him.
She realized her initial dream — bringing the boy’s mom home to live with her and helping her get off opioids to be able to raise her own son — was overly optimistic and perhaps naïve. Within two weeks, the birth mother – who’d been legally prescribed Purdue Pharma’s OxyContin as a teen but then suffered through eight years of addiction – was gone. Martinez is now legal guardian of boy, now 19-months-old, and hopes to permanently adopt him. NAS: A misunderstood American crisis
The story of Martinez and her son are just one of hundreds of thousands of families struggling with the Nation’s opioid public health crisis. You probably know that America has been rocked for more than two decades of opioid overuse and misuse through Big Pharma flooding the market with prescription painkillers, lacking discrimination and in seeming defiance of warnings of a growing addiction crisis.
The impact on America’s adults is both mindboggling and sweeping. Sadly, over 400,000 Americans have reportedly died from opioids during the period of 1999-2017 (from opioids obtained legally in addition to illegal street drugs). This figure is roughly equal to the number of U.S. soldiers killed in World War II, to provide some perspective to the enormity of the current opioid health crisis. Other social consequences and burdens of the Nation’s’ ongoing opioid health crisis is the alarming and unprecedented spike in the number of children who require foster care because of their parents’ addiction to opioids, whether they were prescribed or not. Inexplicably, largely overlooked by society is the impact of the opioid crisis upon children of mothers that had been prescribed opioids during child-bearing age or while pregnant from a doctor that may also been fully unaware of the medical risks to their fetuses.
Opioid Justice is a group of lawyers dedicated to working together in researching and addressing these complex issues, and it estimates that about 250,000 babies are born every year in the United States that, like the baby that went home with Ms. Martinez, will also likely need specialized medical monitoring and treatment. Of the estimated 3.8 million women who gave birth annually, roughly 1.3 million had been prescribed an opioid painkiller, according to one report. Putting that in perspective, that means that every 19 minutes a baby with symptoms of NAS or other problems due to opioid exposure is born somewhere in the United States.
What are the symptoms of NAS?
There is no way to diagnose NAS while the child is still in the womb. When the umbilical cord is cut, the baby’s body and brain receptors begin to experience altered levels of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4628571/> — the same type of withdrawals that adults experience from the sudden and abrupt cessation of drug use.
Following birth, the distressing symptoms of NAS (i.e. exposure to opioids while in utero), begin to emerge within hours or, sometimes, 2-3 days following birth; the first signs typically involve a combination of uncontrollable irritability, inconsolable crying, tremors, diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, fever and poor sleep and feeding patterns. Studies establish that babies diagnosed with NAS require longer, and more involved, stays in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before they can go home. The outcomes for this enormous population of newborns (diagnosed with NAS) is further handicapped by the fact that the federal government has yet to finalize its clinical definition for NAS.
Recommended initial treatments for newborns diagnosed with NAS range from soothing ‘skin-to-skin’ contact with the mother or, when unavailable, another caregiver, to pharmacologic weaning through the use of methadone or morphine; all in an effort to carefully ease the baby off drug dependency with the fewest complications and least suffering. Surprisingly, little is being done to medically monitor newborns diagnosed with NAS once they are sent home from the hospital’s NICU, notwithstanding the mounting medical studies demonstrating that injuries and disorders due to exposure to opioids while in utero can continue throughout childhood.
As opioid-exposed children mature, many will come to exhibit behavioral problems, cognitive delays, mental or motor deficits, as well be diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder (ADD). It is also noteworthy that – as the opioid crisis widens – doctors are also detecting other birth defects that can be attributed to NAS, such as club foot, spina bifida, heart defects, cleft palate, hydrocephalus, esophageal atresia, gastroschisis, anorectal atresia, and diaphragmatic hernia.
A lack of resources for NAS
In New Mexico, Martinez said she struggled at first with a lack of community-funded resources for the ever-rising number of kids diagnosed with NAS or another problem associated with opioid exposure in the womb. Instead, as an adoptive mom Ms. Martinez has needed to improvise and adapt to current gaping holes in the support net. On her own accord, Martinez was able to locate an expert in baby massage whose work, over time, helped her son cope with early stomach problems among other issues.
“He had light sensitivity and sound sensitivity but has overcome that,” Martinez said. In addition to physical therapy her son is also receiving occupational therapy. Martinez, together with a friend who is also a doula(a non-medical companion for major events such as birthing), are looking to see if they can establish a safe haven under New Mexico law where addicted mothers can safely drop off babies they cannot care for.
“We need to work together to come up with things to help these kids,” Martinez said. “It’s better that we address their problems than just hide.” In 2019, Martinez joined numerous other parents and caretakers who signed onto a nationwide legal action against the large pharmaceutical companies, aiming to make them pay for the long-term care of children exposed to opioids in the womb.
The legal fight for NAS babies
Since 2018, class-action lawsuits have been filed by the members of Opioid Justice on behalf of opioid-exposed children and their guardians, in upwards of 40 states. Our legal team has been working hard to get children born to prescription opioid-dependent-and-using mothers to be recognized as their own legal class within the national opioid litigation currently before U.S. District Court Judge Daniel A. Polster, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Our efforts are linked closely to the ongoing complex negotiations – involving big pharmaceutical companies and scores of states and local municipalities hoping to recover their purported costs for dealing with the opioid crisis – aimed at a comprehensive settlement. Importantly, the members of Opioid Justice are fighting every day to make sure that children with NAS or other opioid-related syndromes are represented in the ongoing bankruptcy action filed by the manufacturer at the center of the crisis, Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, one of the most widely-prescribed painkillers on the market. A tentative settlement of its liability in the range of $10-12 billion has been reported.
A prime motivation and objective of the members of Opioid Justice is avoiding the mistakes that flowed from the historic settlement in the late 1990s with Big Tobacco. There, the major cigarette makers agreed to pay out billions of dollars that largely went to a coalition of states and other localities – similar in many respects to today’s opioid settlement talks. But in the tobacco case, the lawmakers in states and localities reportedly steered this cash to pay off their bills, fill potholes and pave roads, or build ballfields and parks; almost none of the money went towards smoking-cessation programs, or the widespread health problems that are rightly blamed on cigarettes, as intended.
That’s why it’s profoundly important for the public to know there’s still time for new plaintiffs to join our OxyContin birth defects lawsuit, but that window of opportunity is also getting shorter. If your child was exposed to opioid painkillers during pregnancy, we hope you’ll join us in our legal battle for an agreement that will benefit families, like the Martinez family, not lawmakers. We are fighting for justice for children born with NAS as well as all children suffering from NAS, and we would invite you to be part of the solution.

Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers, also called Yorkies, are adorably small dogs that weigh seven pounds maximum. No wonder they rank 10th as the most popular dog breeds in America. They are known for having a long, silky coat that can turn any passerby’s eyes.
Yorkshire Terriers are cute, loving, and great companions. But, they have a feisty side too. As a matter of fact, some people regard them as a big dog trap in a small dog’s body. They are not afraid of anything, even if they’re up against a big dog or animal.

History Of The Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers were bred in England during the Industrial Revolution to catch rats in mines. It’s believed that this breed was crossbred from different types of terriers such as Clydesdale Terrier, Paisley Terrier, and Skye Terriers.
Yorkshire Terriers are impressive ratters. However, that’s not the only purpose they have during those times. As you know, Yorkshire Terriers are small enough to be carried by hunters in their pockets, plus their bravery was that of a big dog; they’re the most convenient choice for hunting. So, aside from being sent to the mills to exterminate rats, they were also sent to wild animals’ dens to hunt – wild animals such as foxes and badgers.
For a dog this small, it’s undeniably surprising how they can pull off such a courageous job.
During the Victorian Era, things have changed in favor of the Yorkies. From being exterminators in the mills, they became desirable pets for royalty and upper classes. It was during this time that small dogs were on-trend. With the Yorkies’ size and their long, lustrous hair, there was no other dog that looked like them, and they immediately became a symbol of wealth.
However, it was only in the year 1861 that Yorkshire Terriers were presented in a bench show. They were named Broken-haired Scotch Terrier at that time. In 1865, a dog named Huddersfield Ben, the father of the modern terriers, was introduced and became popular immediately. And by the year 1870, the breed was renamed Yorkshire Terrier as it is the place where they were developed.
Temperament Of The Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers are generally affectionate, energetic, and tomboyish. Notice how there’s a balance of bravery and sweetness in there? Well, that’s mainly because Yorkies have a unique personality brought by the combination of a terrier and a toy dog – adventurous and adorable.
With their terrier side, they can be aggressive towards other animals such as dogs and cats. They also need to be active at some time of the day; however, unlike bigger dogs, they don’t require a lot of it. You can set up a few tasks for them to do to give them that sense of purpose (especially that they were bred as working dogs).
As a toy dog, they can be very great companions, especially if you’re a traveler. With their small size, owners can easily carry them inside a bag. Other than that, they are also very confident and work great as therapy dogs for timid people and those with anxiety. They can also quickly adapt well in any type of surroundings, and home situations, may it be in an apartment, a condo, or a house.
Though they can be very friendly with adults, I cannot say the same with little children, especially babies. With their aggressive nature, a Yorkshire Terrier may think of the child as a dog, too, which can be dangerous. They are also not great companions for small companions such as guinea pigs and rabbits because of their hunter background.
However, if you want a Yorkie, the only way to get around this temperament is early socialization. Meaning, if you have a kid, then it would be best to get a young puppy that can grow together with your child. The same thing with cats, Yorkshire Terriers would usually tolerate the animal if they have lived together for some time.
In other words, if you want to own a Yorkshire Terrier, you need to be able to create a balance between his two temperaments. Socialize him with different people, animals, and sights. If properly raised, they can become amiable and well-rounded dogs.
Yorkshire Terrier Care Requirements
Nutrition: Yorkshire Terriers, just like any other dog, needs a healthy and well-balanced meal. It also needs to be of high-quality to maintain their long and silky coat. With a weight of 3-7 pounds, Yorkies would need 150 calories of food daily if inactive. However, if they are active, 200 calories a day should suffice. Dry food is highly recommended so they can also maintain healthy teeth. At the same time, this wouldn’t get stuck on the long hair on their face. If you opt to prepare a meal for them, make sure that there’s a balance of protein, vegetables, fruits, and carbs, with protein as the primary ingredient. You can get this protein from chicken, fish, lamb, or turkey. For carbohydrates, you can opt for brown rice and sweet potatoes. They are excellent sources of fiber as well. Maintaining a well-balanced diet will help your Yorkie maintain their energy and keep their right weight.
Grooming: Yorkshire Terriers’ hair doesn’t shed. However, it grows continuously up to two feet if not trimmed. Though this is not a problem since it’s one thing that makes Yorkies attractive, keeping the hair long would also mean daily brushing if you don’t want it to form knots. The hair on the upper part of her head needs regular trimming to avoid eye irritation. They would also need to have a bath at least once a week. Before bathing, make sure to brush the hair first and entangle any knots. You can run your fingers to your Yorkies coat. Don’t forget to check their ears and nails. The ears should be kept clean, and the nails should always be trimmed. Trimming the hair might also be needed if it becomes too long. However, it’s still best to have a professional do this. If you want to do it on your own, make sure to be very careful, or you can get yourself trained too to ensure your Yorkie’s safety.
Exercise: Yorkshire Terriers may be small in size, but they do need some exercise too. You can take them for a walk at least once a day. Make sure the pace is steady and one that will not require him to take big breaths. Also, keep him in a leash as they enjoy wandering around. Other than the daily walks, you can also give them cardio exercise once or twice a week. There are different ways that you can do this: hide and seek, fetch, frisbee. Just make sure always to prepare a treat every after your Yorkie does an excellent job to keep his mood up.
Health: Yorkshire Terriers generally have a longer lifespan; however, just like any other dog breed, they can be prone to some health problems. Most of these are brought about by genetic disorders. Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s), a malfunction in the adrenal glands which produces a lot of steroid hormones, is one genetic problem that affects Yorkshire Terriers the most. They can also develop eye problems, liver problems, heart diseases, and problems in bones and joints. Dental diseases, infections, obesity, allergies, and parasites are also common problems of dogs in general that you need to watch out for. Another thing that you need to remember that Yorkies are not great swimmers. So, always keep an eye on them if near any body of water.
Lifespan: The life expectancy of Yorkshire Terriers is 11-15 years.

U.S. states race to contain coronavirus as cases near 1,000

U.S. states race to contain coronavirus as cases near 1,000
As coronavirus cases crop up across the United States, some governors and other leaders are scrambling to slow its spread, banning large public gatherings, enforcing quarantines and calling National Guard troops.
With new deaths reported and the number of confirmed U.S. cases closing in on 1,000, lawmakers and health officials set up containment zones and quarantine areas and sought to limit contact with those who might be infected.
In Washington state, the governor was expected to ban gatherings of more than 250 people in virtually the entire Seattle metro area, home to some 4 million people. Schools and houses of worship were shuttered in a New York City suburb where a cluster of cases could be the largest in the nation, and the governor sent National Guard troops to help clean public spaces and deliver food.
The moves came as the battle to stop the virus from spreading intensified. More schools and universities, including UCLA, Yale and Stanford, have announced plans to send students home and move classes online.
The virus has infected more than 800 people in the U.S. and killed at least 30, with one state after another recording its first infections in quick succession.
For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough. For some, especially the elderly and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. Most people recover in a matter of weeks, as has happened with three-quarters of those infected in China.
For those in the middle of a quarantine, it’s an anxious time waiting for the threat to pass.
Judy Aqua, who’s in her 60s, is quarantining herself at home in New Rochelle, outside New York city, after possibly being exposed to someone with the virus.
“People are really afraid to go to the supermarket. They’re afraid to go to the cleaner,” she said. When her husband made a recent run to a post office, she told him to wear gloves.
Life in many places went on as usual, but many major events were cancelled or postponed, including the Coachella music festival that draws tens of thousands to the California desert near Palm Springs every April.
The United Nations announced it would close its New York headquarters to the public and suspend all tours, and one of the biggest resort operators in Las Vegas, MGM Resorts International, said it would close buffets at all of its Las Vegas Strip casinos as a precaution, although the casinos were staying open.
The ban on gatherings in Washington state would apply to sporting events such as Seattle Mariners baseball and Seattle Sounders soccer games, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly. It could be just the beginning of disruptions to sports: Already, some college sports games will be played without fans in Ohio and California, and the NCAA said it would “make decisions in the coming days” about its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments after two conferences banned fans from their championships and the Ivy League cancelled its basketball tournaments altogether.
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker declared a state of emergency as cases statewide jumped from 51 to 92. Of that number, 70 are now connected to a meeting held last month by biotech company Biogen at a hotel in downtown Boston.
Baker said the state of emergency will give him greater authority to take such actions as shutting down large events, gaining access to buildings or stockpiling protective gear. Santa Clara County in California, home to San Jose and Silicon Valley, has banned on all gatherings of 1,000 people or more.
Presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden abruptly cancelled rallies in Cleveland because of worries about the virus.
As many people considered whether it’s prudent to travel, the news that everyone on a flight from Italy may have been exposed had health officials urging those passengers to self-isolate. A woman from suburban Houston flew home after testing positive to consult her own doctor, and now everyone on the two flights she took could be at risk.
Some airport workers are also dealing with the outbreak, with several Transportation Security Administration officers at Mineta San Jose International Airport testing positive. They were receiving medical care and all TSA employees who had contact with them over the past 14 days are being quarantined at home, the agency said.
In Oakland, California, restless passengers on a coronavirus-struck cruise ship awaited their turn to disembark. After being forced to idle for days off the California coast, the ship docked Monday with about 3,500 passengers and crew, including at least 21 who tested positive for the virus. Passengers from Canada and other countries were to be flown home, while Americans were being sent to military bases in California, Texas and Georgia for testing and 14-day quarantines, and others were still waiting to get off.
“We’re trying to stay calm and were trying to stay positive, but it’s getting harder and harder. They can’t make up their minds how to keep us safe,” said passenger Beryl Ward, 77, of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
By Tuesday night, Princess Cruises said about 1,400 people had gotten off the ship. About 1,100 crew members were to remain aboard.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom urged the state’s nearly 40 million residents to avoid sporting events, concerts and large gatherings and adamantly warned the elderly to stay away from cruise ships.
