He is a bandit leader who relentlessly ravages various ruins on the ship, as well as a beastmaster. He is a hotheaded but kind-hearted man full of personality, and is adored by his subordinates. Later, he joins the group after having had attacked Shirley in search of Sacred Eres. He is a troublemaker in a different way than Norma is, often getting the short end of the stick. He shares a deep bond with the Grand Galf, Giet, that crosses the boundaries between humans and beasts.

Quotes Descriptions:

“Hey, Giet… We’re together. Whatever happens, we’re together.” As his faith wavers, he mutters this while alone, intended for family that isn’t there.

“Ain’t no ‘current’ or ‘old’ with family. New and old, family’s family.” A pure thought that does not even consider ranking the things that are important.

Profile:

He was alone. He yearned for the presence of others besides for himself. No matter how much he pretended to act tough by pretending men loved solitude, he couldn’t fool his heart.

A Grand Galf child separated from his flock, and the boy himself. They were both lonely, but just by looking into each other’s eyes, they felt connected. When he protected Giet from a monster, he received a deep wound to his left eye, but even that seemed like proof of his bond with Giet. And so, Giet became Moses’ first family.

He also treasures his subordinates. He thinks of them as his own family. The more he treasured them, the more their numbers increased, and the more they felt to be his family. Before he knew it, Moses had become the leader of a group of bandits. He truly enjoyed being carefree with everyone. Giet and his subordinates, and his new companions, Senel and the others. Yet in the shadow of it all, he pretended not to notice the evident anxiety spreading.

"Wilding" - a phenomenon in which a beast tamer's tamed beast regains its original wildness and becomes ferocious. It is said that the younger a beast is tamed, and the deeper the bond with the beast is, the longer it will take before it goes wild. Inevitably though, it will happen. But when it came to himself and Giet, he believed they could overcome it. Rather, he wanted to believe they could.

So when he heard rumors that a Grand Galf that looked like Giet had attacked people, he absolutely did not believe it. He couldn’t forgive whoever spread such a groundless rumor. However, the more he investigated, the closer to the truth the rumors became.

Before long, Giet’s fangs attacked his subordinates who are like family to him. At this utmost limit, Moses fully realized how soft he’d been and made a decision. He could not let Giet hurt anyone else. He would not allow Giet to get hurt, either. He was the only one who could take responsibility for this.

Even though Moses knew that the black mist was the cause of Giet becoming ferocious, he was prepared. The black mist had only caused Giet’s wild behavior to occur sooner. The real parting would have inevitably come someday. Before that happened, Moses decided to part with Giet.

Giet’s departing howl resounded throughout the abandoned land. Was it a cry of loneliness? Of sadness? Something else…? Hearing that voice, Moses thought to himself, no matter how far apart they are, family is family. That bond can never be severed.

This Grand Galf has a powerful bond with Moses. Grand Galfs, the king of Galfs, very much do not let their guards down. There are very few beastmasters who have been able to command these beasts, so such a relationship can be called a rarity.

Some ramblings relevant to the Legendia manga now that I've looked through it, mostly just things of note. Under the cut because spoilers. Yes I know the game is eighteen years old now but shush. Spoilers.

We see a bit of Senel and Shirley's life before their arrival on the Legacy in the beginning of the manga before Cashel tracks them down and they're forced to leave. Their arrival on the Legacy is more or less the same, minus Walter's teriques attacking them during the storm. Will is still the first to find them and Chloe arrives on the scene as well. We get a glimpse of Chloe's inability to swim.

Things are peaceful for the group in Werites Beacon for a while before Moses suddenly shows up and kidnaps Shirley. Also Jay shows up briefly to be a butt except Senel is not put in jail because of it. Then the group gets to Moses's lair and the Terrors attack. Stingle is with them, speedrun the reveal that Chloe knows him. Party splits not because Senel went off on his own but because of other reasons.

No Harriet, but Senel does meet Norma and the two do meet Jay. They do not escort Poppo to the village though. Will and Chloe show up too but after Norma and Senel have already been talking to Jay for a while.

We cut to the Waterways stuff and Moses interrupting the attack on the Terrors while everyone's trying to rescue Shirley, everyone goes into the Waterways and Melanie floods them. Interestingly, Jay travels with the group through the Waterways. Walter isn't introduced until after the Waterways stuff and Fenimore travels with Senel and co. Maurits arriving on the scene stops Walter from continuing to fight Senel and co.

There's no Whisper Crystal stuff, so no Grune arrival. In fact Grune doesn't show up until the beginning of the fifth book, after Stella's death. Also the fourth book is when Harriet shows up for the first time before disappearing again. For some reason Senel, Moses, Norma, and Chloe all get thrown in jail. I assume because the people of Werites Beacon thought they were doing something weird with Harriet because Moses had picked her up by the back of the dress. Also it's revealed much earlier that Musette is important.

The war stuff gets pretty condensed and the group gets split to fight one of the Terrors each. Jay and Moses get put against Cashel, Will and Norma are against Melanie, and Chloe and Senel are naturally against Stingle.

Pippo actually gets hurt protecting Jay from Cashel at one point! I honestly thought they killed him for a second from how Jay reacted, but honestly him reacting that way because one of his adoptive family got hurt makes sense. I guess the Oresoren decided to join in on the fight for a bit. Cashel also creates illusions of one of the Oresoren (I think it's Pippo, which is an extra ow factor) to throw Jay off. Moses and Giet save Pippo and help Jay beat Cashel. Pippo's okay, this is no longer the worst timeline.

I can only guess they didn’t want to just have Jay see through Cashel’s illusions and everything like in the game because it made for better storytelling? But it was kind of an odd decision to involve the Oresoren. It almost kind of feels like Cashel is stealing a little bit of Solon’s thunder by messing with Jay and using the Oresoren to do it. But they don’t touch on Jay’s character quest stuff at all so I guess that was all they could do.

I couldn't really tell what was going on with Melanie's fight but Will and Norma fight her. Stingle still gets away after Chloe and Senel fight him and then we just never see him again. Then Senel fights Vaclav.

It also looked like Norma gave Shirley her broach back after the Vaclav fight but I couldn’t be too sure. I’d love to pass these books to someone who could help translate but I don’t know anyone who could do that will just have to be a dream.

Stella still dies saving everyone from the cannon’s blast. Grune appears to talk to Senel for a second and then magically disappears. There's also some kind of argument between Senel and Shirley, I assume having to do with Stella. We still see Fenimore and Shirley having their moment of bonding. Sexist knight is also a thing but he is only around for a few panels total.

Now here's where things get interesting. Fenimore doesn't die during Shirley's ascension to Merines. In fact, she protects Senel from Maurits and joins the party for a while. Then Harriet returns and we see her beef with Will finally. Grune also finally joins up with everyone. Everyone goes to the Quiet Lands and Harriet comes with.

Then for some reason the manga speedruns Will's character quest?? None of the stuff involving the flowers, just... him and Harriet's relationship as father and daughter getting fixed. Which is fine, I guess, but things just come to a screeching halt so that this can happen. The party still learns the story of how the Orerines came to Shining Blue through the monuments but it's all very condensed. Then after all of that everyone goes back to Werites Beacon like nothing is wrong.

AND THEN THEY THROW MOSES'S CHARACTER QUEST AT US.

It's still pretty speedrunned but... it's Moses's character quest! Giet is going wild, he attacks Moses, the whole reveal about Moses and Giet's past is brought up, Giet straight up almost kills Moses from the look of it, Giet goes back to normal and makes up with Moses, and then it cuts back to the Quiet Lands and Moses is letting Giet go.

It's just??? Such a confusing decision for the manga! It brings everything to a screeching halt for this. And it's only Will and Moses that get their character quests represented! I just don't understand! Like the only other thing relevant to the character quests is Schwartz appearing in the background of a panel with Grune. A single panel. And she's in silhouette. I get they probably only had so many books to work with but it's a letdown.

There's no obtaining Sacred Eres either, which is a little disappointing. But then it doesn't seem like Nerifes took away the eres of the Orerines in the first place so? I guess it wasn't needed. Shirley also seems to be fighting Nerifes's hold on her before Senel and co fight Walter. Pretty sure Walter still dies, which is such a shame.

I forget when it was, but there’s also this whole section where Jay and Chloe are having some kind of argument? I wonder if it had to do with the idea of potentially killing Shirley if they couldn’t get through to her. It’s also worth noting that Maurits doesn’t reveal Senel’s past to Shirley at any point. Senel just is able to snap Shirley out of her possession and everything looks fine.

Nerifes still possesses Maurits, but there's also a bunch of background Ferines there during the fight with him that help break him out of it from the look of it. Also Senel doesn't fall off the Wings of Light and there's no Shirley jumping off to save him.

Overall it's not a bad adaptation of Legendia, but it does make some confusing decisions. Still worth it for the icon potential, though.

I did a proper tier list for myself for the first time in several years. Giet wasn't in it, but he belongs in the favorite tier.

if you wonder why I don't talk about Moses much, well... two reasons. one, almost nobody fuckin' knows who the guy is, and if they do they either hate his game or never played it. two, I'm insane. you've seen me with Yuri, and you can see here that Moses is the king of the tiers, so... I'm sure you can put that into perspective LOL.

Yuri-hime (princess Yuri) is a joke from the tenth anniversary skits, where the characters were part of a play and Yuri was given the role of princess. technically Yuri would be in the favorite tier with everyone else (I don't have them listed in order of favorites beyond tier, they're listed by game (mainline order, then side order, then gacha order), but if you asked me to pick between Yuri and Vicious for example, I'd reeeeally struggle. some faves are ofc higher than others and it'd be easier to put some over others, but Yuri currently just has special admin privileges in my brain, so he gets his own tier that is effectively equal to "favorite", but he's a princess and he should have his own princess tier).

I have other tiers below this including like, neutral, below neutral but not dislike (basically means I don't dislike them but I don't care either way and will get bored very quickly with them/don't have the attention span for them out of general lack of interest) and two tiers reserved for characters I don't like, but I only want to share my bigger likes and loves here.

Jade, Luke and Natalia are in a weird spot because if you asked me who my second fave in Abyss is, I'd say Jade without question, which is true. I'm not even sure myself why Natalia is higher than him on my own tier list LOL, like in my own head I get it, but I... don't LOL. I guess maybe just bc I feel that Jade has more fans, and I'd feel the need to talk about Natalia instead since Jade has lots of love as it is (and he's everywhere in merch/media LOL)? I'd say Luke and Natalia are probably about even as my third faves tho.

I did have a moment of revelation when I put Asura above Ruca without hesitation and I felt so bad for Ruca LMAO. Ruca's in a good spot for himself, I just didn't even hesitate to put Asura in a higher ranking and I felt so bad LOL I am not helping Ruca's self esteem issues about his past life. Aster also deserves a spot next to Emil and Ratatosk, not just for the luls about it but because he really would be in that tier with them. Grune is complicated bc while I do love awakened Grune, she's there for like two seconds and there's no differentiation for this tier list. If she was there I'd put awakened Grune in like a lot tho!

ToE/ToB aren't here at all because I haven't played them (or watched a walkthrough), so I'm only familiar with them through the gacha games, and it didn't feel fair to rank them based on knowledge of games that only one of them reflects their canon selves and the others are all AUs (and even in Rays' case, their situation/circumstance is still vastly unlike their canons).

I also did favorite games. I only put one of each version because Tales has re-releases/remasters/remakes galore. also in order of release.

I know I put "this one" and not "these ones" but I don't feel like fixing it and I wasn't thinking about anything except Legendia when I made the rankings LOL. Hearts is in a tough spot because it's higher up than Dawn/KoR, but I don't know if I'd put it on the same level as Destiny/Rebirth/etc.

I’m sorry I have zero self control, here comes Walter. He will be canon divergent because it’s my blog and I make the rules, and the rules say that Walter deserves better. Exact canon divergent details under the cut because yes I will be going into Legendia spoiler territory. As if I already haven’t done that numerous times on this blog.

Okay so. In canon Walter dies in the Wings of Light after making his final stand against Senel and co. But he has so much potential beyond that. He’s angry. He’s understandably upset that Shirley chose Senel over him, who has been trained to be her personal guard ever since he was little. He’s also been trained from that age to hate the Orerines because well, obviously, there’s that whole race angle of the game.

So Walter doesn’t die.

Like in canon, he’s still heavily wounded from the fight prior to the encounter in the Wings of Light and Senel and co see this. But Walter still insists on controlling the automaton that he has fight in his stead, and so they do. But as he collapses after the fight, Norma decides she can’t stand seeing him like this and goes to start healing him. Jay of course is skeptical of whether this is a good idea or not, because Walter’s been their enemy up until this point, but Norma says that they shouldn’t just let him die. It isn’t right, and his death won’t change the relationship between the Orerines and Ferines.

Walter tries to resist, to reject the help, but he’s too weak to do so. Senel still kneels down beside him as in canon as all of this is going on, and Walter just glares. He still resents that Shirley preferred Senel. He’s still angry over all that’s happened between the Orerines and Ferines, and Senel understands this. But Senel also knows that Norma, surprisingly, is right. Letting Walter die won’t change anything.

“You don’t have to change the way you view me, Walter. Or any Orerines. But please, let us help you,” Senel says. Walter wants to push away the offered hand, but is still too weak to do so even with Norma’s healing eres helping him. Will of course has also jumped in to help Norma heal him. At last, Walter concedes defeat and decides that he doesn’t want to die just because of his pride. He passes out from exhaustion after Will and Norma finish healing him, and even with Jay’s reservations on the matter he agrees they can’t just leave him there. So everyone puts Walter on Giet’s back and they go in to face Maurits and Shirley.

Maurits is pissed that Walter wasn’t able to stop Senel and co from reaching Shirley, and despite Walter being passed out he threatens to strip him of his position as Shirley’s personal guard. Senel and co are upset that Maurits was going to push Walter this far, to the point of having to die just to stop them from stopping the Cataclysm. To stop them from reaching Shirley.

Things go relatively similar to in canon, with the party learning that the Orerines are the invaders rather than the Ferines and Senel still managing to get through to Shirley and the Wings of Light are stopped. Maurits also still attacks Shirley, but instead of actually hitting her Walter has regained consciousness and moves in to protect Shirley himself, taking the blast of Maurits’ lightning himself.

Shirley is of course horrified that Walter would get himself hurt again to protect her after he almost died before, but Walter insists that even if it’s Maurits attacking her, it’s still his duty to protect her. Maurits of course is pissed, and he says that Shirley is unworthy of her position - as is Walter. He lets Nerifes possess him as in canon and a fight ensues, but Shirley and Walter both sit it out for obvious reasons. Unlike in canon, when Maurits is defeated in his Nerifes state he dies.

Events continue as canon, just with Walter present and uncertain of how things will proceed in this new world of Orerines and Ferines. He’s understandably not happy about Shirley saving Senel from falling from the Wings of Light, but kind of has to go with it.

He kind of steps in to take charge of things in the Ferines village with Maurits being dead, and since Shirley shifts from being Merines to just an ambassador between the two races he finds himself with uncertainty of what to do with himself. He also is going to get his own character quest because this boy needs to overcome his own issues like the rest of the party and stuff.

Anyway all this to say Walter deserves the world and I’m going to give it to him.
