I say this every time but it's a detail that will get lost in history. This movie is the reason that so much of dnd is considered free use and in the public domain now.

When the movie came out, Hasbro (the company behind the "official" D&D company) was pulling some shit with the OGL license. They wanted every twitch stream and every indie project and every creator to give them the final say and part of the revenue made from their projects and creations. Critical Role? They wanted a slice of that. Your favorite creators who made things like the Combat Wheelchair? Any small streamer who streamed their house game with their friends? Give the money. It didn't matter if they were a company or someone who wrote one-page mini-games using 5e rules, Hasbro would want to take a chunk of percentage from whatever money you made.

So in response, we all went 'Oh alright. You want our money? Too bad. We're cancelling whatever subscriptions we have under Hasbro. DnD Beyond? Yeah, we're taking our characters off that and back to pen and paper. That movie you just made with A-class Actors and over a hundred million dollars? We'll just stay home. We will TANK your shit to the ground. You aren't the only voice in the ttrpg community.

And in response, Hasbro released a 'community survey' that asked what we thought were fair and reasonable concessions to make in order to keep using the official materials or compatible creations with the 5e game. The wording in the survey was highly manipulative, not giving you a chance to say "We don't want Any Changes To The Original License, you Greedy Overlord Cunts." So the community banded together and stood strong in our response.

Things were Not looking good for Hasbro. This was spreading far outside of Dungeons and Dragons now. Fans of Magic the Gathering were starting to rally their support, their youtube comment section was a mess, and both Dropout and Critical Role were both threatening to leave the DnD properties behind for good. Their reputation had totally tanked.

And then one morning, someone noticed that there was a document over 400 pages long listed under the Creative Commons 4.0 International License (Fans of a specific podcast will recognize this). Some unknown member of the DnD team had listed the entire 5.1 edition! Rules, spells, characters, settings and locations. All were free to use with appropriate credit given to the original owners, no revenue slice required!

It looked like a panic decision, or a last-ditch attempt at peace, or unclear instructions sent to an intern. But I'll always remember when the update came out that Hasbro shot themselves in the foot in their confusion, and how it looks when you make corporations panic.

People are saying that the new 5.2 edition will still be under Creative Commons. But I still think it's important to keep an eye on whatever companies got going on under the hood, or stay in the loop with blogs or social media accounts who help others stay updated whenever something legal happens. Fandom and fan spaces aren't completely in a bubble from reality, which is why it's important to remember how precious true creativity is. Companies can buy and restrict brand names, but they would be nowhere without the people in basements and bedrooms making truly original creations.

So yeah! That's ultimately the reason why this movie is high up on the list of my favorite movies. The effects were a blend of digital and practical, with some amazing rigs and costumes coming out of the behind-the-scenes! Along with what everyone above listed as clever rule references to the actual game and gamely, we also should remember this movie as the main point that eventually broke Hasbro.
