Make sure you check out these new CCI1* services if you’re stepping up to international competition this year. American Eventing users now have seven options to compete at International 1*, including fresh competitions at Alnwick Ford and Catton Park. How’s all you need to know.
Will you be able tσ watch the equine competitions at the Olympics this year? Horse gymnastics are treading a fine line when continuing to compete iȵ the Olympics, we all know. By watching the equestrian events taking place in Ƥaris, one means you can vote for them to be is to ƀe. Make sure you’re planning on tweaking in if you want to play your part in keeping us in the sport by watching the statistics. They also weigh economic and environmental considerations as well as the ever-present cultural license.
Does the Kiwis compete in Paris on the floor? Jock Paget, a high efficiency director, believes so. Accσrding to Jock, there is a comfortable atmosphere in the Kiwi camp. After winning creω copper in London 2012 for the first time in 12 yȩars, they are so eager to compete in the Olympics this summer, and Jock sαys they are “up for it. ” In Paris, everything is to enjoy fσr!
Horse instructor, writer, and rider of the 2024 Gaucho Derby, Warwick Schiller discusses the lessons he learned from the most difficult horsemanship ever to date. The Gaucho Derby this year crammed all the details that you would anticipate from a massive 500km walk through the Southeastern forest. The Derby callȿ for life skills, courage, resilience, and equestrian on an incredible level. It is much more than just α race. In the most ɾecent episode of his Jouɾney On Podcast, Warwick describes his journey as a” religious trip” and stock the life lessons he learned from it. It’s a lengthy listen, making it a great companion for those larger house chores, but not as much as the Derby.
We’ll wrap up with Bella Hadid’s horsegirl stylish and information of the week. No matter what she wears, Bella’s bringing the horseworld to Vogue is really great because she teamed bright glitter with a Stetson ( or another brand of cowboy hat that lacks the pleasing repetition I’ve gone with these ).

An Ending (Ascent)
July, 1969
Somehow he’d forgotten it was today, even though it was all over the papers and it was all the radio announcers spoke of. A dozen people stood outside Tyler’s, crowding around the Sony Trinitron display, and he remembered that up in the darkness, in the vast blackness beyond the Earth’s thin atmosphere, a tiny ship circled the barren moon.
Aziraphale joined the fringes of the crowd and he could just about see the flickering, grainy images through the bobbing heads, just about hear some man’s voice droning on about modules and landers and fuel. The picture wasn’t of space but some BBC studio somewhere, Earthbound men in ties nattering on.
The astronauts were suspended up there in their little origami spaceship, poised between Worlds. Crowley had explained it all to him, sketched it all out on his back when they’d laid in his bed. It had been incomprehensible. And it wasn’t that he was bad at numbers, you had to be good at doing maths in your head at St Thomas’s. But the way Crowley had described the Newtonian mechanics of it all made his head spin. Trajectory, velocity, acceleration, deceleration.
(Crowley’s fingers drawing circles and flight paths on the bare skin of his back, his low voice gone soft, a smile in it, instead of teeth. That’s what had made him dizzy. Not the numbers, not the idea of being in a tiny little shoebox in the sky. Just a precious human thing, skin on skin, the two of them lying there in the dark.)
This is my preview for the Good Aumens event, written for the prompt “doctor”, coming on June 7.
The 1960s are ending, and Dr Aziraphale East has fled to a small country town to escape a tragedy. Against the backdrop of the first moon landing, he forms an inconvenient bond with his neighbour, Anthony Crowley.

Fixer Upper
“Crowley, can I ask you something?” Aziraphale says. On the TV an attractive man is halfway through dismantling a perfectly lovely set of 19th century stairs and replacing them with some slat and iron offense to good taste.
It is twenty years before Armageddon, five years since the first dinner at the Ritz, hours since a picnic in St James park, minutes since Crowley asked, “nightcap at mine?’ and mere moments since Crowley panicked and invented HGTV five years early to distract from what it might mean that Aziraphale said yes.
It is also just shy of thirteen years before certain events would transpire to set in motion the End of Days. But to the demon trying to work up the nerve to put his arm around the angel on the couch and to the angel trying to work up the nerve to let him, it still seems that they have all the time in the world.
“Do you think I ought to renovate?” Aziraphale continues.
“Oh,” Crowley says, still thinking about the warmth of a picnic blanket in the afternoon sun, about watching Aziraphale close his lips around a candied walnut and the secret idea, old and well worn, I could feed him by hand, followed closely by a newer realization, bright and startling: he might let me. “The bookshop you mean?”
“Oh, no...er....” Aziraphale looks down at the curves of his body. “It’s just by now this corporation is quite old. A bit frayed. I can’t imagine you like it much. I thought of asking for a new one before our picnic today, but it wouldn’t have come in time. The incorporation department is on backlog.”
Crowley gapes. “What?”
“Well, I think it’s comfortable, but it's a bit...soft. 19th century. It’s silly of me to be attached to a corporation when it’s all just...furniture really.”
“Just...furniture.” Crowley repeats. “You were planning to go up...up there. Acquire a new body, show up at the park, and expect me to be all, well I hated that wallpaper anyway or much better now that you have an open plan kitchen. That’s what you expected?”
“Er…” Aziraphale says. “I’m afraid I’ve lost the metaphor. Anyway, I rather thought you would compliment my biceps.”
“What the Heaven has gotten into you?” Crowley hisses. “Hang on, did Gabriel come by the shop again?”
Aziraphale’s shoulders wilt. “He sent a memo. I didn’t want to tell you earlier for fear of spoiling the picnic.”
“It was a lovely picnic,” Crowley says fiercely.
“It rather was, wasn’t it?” Aziraphale’s smile is soft but hesitant.
“For the record, I like the wallpaper,” Crowley says. The tips of his ears go red.
“You...you do?”
“Course I do angel, I...I like you.”
“Oh.” Aziraphale’s cheeks have gone red to match Crowley’s ears. “Well, I guess there’s no rush to change it then.”
“Nope,” Crowley pops the P.
On the screen in front of them, a show that will become one of Hell’s most successful recruitment campaigns and the scourge of dentist office waiting rooms everywhere plays on, unaware that it won’t premiere for another fourteen years.
“You’re quite sweet you know.” Aziraphale’s smile is sly.
“There’s no call for that kind of language,” Crowley grumbles, but his arm has settled into place on Aziraphale’s shoulders. Aziraphale leans into the warm weight of it, leans in and breathes.

Future GO Fanwork Event Plans
(Click this for full sized version)
Quick recap for anyone not familiar with the ongoing GO Rom Com Event: FAQ | Masterlist | Discord where you can read more/ask questions
After the Rom Com event is over, this blog will be transitioning to “GO Events”, and we’ll run five events over the course of 2020 and into 2021. (We ran a few surveys to gauge interest in lots of different event ideas, and these decisions were made based on the data gleaned from those results.)
Support/betaing/brainstorming/etc. will be available via our discord chat server for every event. Betas are not compulsory, but strongly suggested. More details about each event will be coming up closer to the event dates, but here is a quick rundown of the general concept for each event:
GO AU Fest: No angels or demons, AUs only, using GO characters. Fic, art, and other media welcomed. Prompts will be assigned via claims.
GO POV Pairs: Beginning with a list of canon-compliant story ideas, creators will sign up as an Aziraphale or a Crowley. Prompts will be given out to pairs via claims. Those pairs can work together or separately (you will specify a preference upon signup) but everyone will create a work to their prompt done solely from the POV of their chosen character.
GO MystAU: From a list of mystery genre plotlines (submissions accepted via Tumblr/Discord) participants will claim one and create a work based on it.
GO OTP Prompts Fest: We’ll collect writing/art prompts from places such as the OTP prompts generator and other prompts lists. Artists and writers would claim a prompt from the resulting list and create a work based on it.
GO Book AU: We’ll compile a list of classic books, and then participants will claim one to adapt using GO characters. (This event has been positioned late in the event cycle because I believe it may take the most planning on the part of the participants. We will likely start the claims process long before the previous event has wrapped up to give everyone extra time to brainstorm and plan.)
MystAU and the OTP Prompts events were both high scoring as far as votes and 1st/2nd/3rd place rankings went, but also had a high number of low rankings. When their rankings were compared, I found that many people who liked one of the ideas disliked the other. When we run these events concurrently, hopefully people who aren’t interested in one will feel drawn to the other, and we can have more participants and works to enjoy.
At the conclusion of the Rom Com event, the name of this blog and the discord will be changing to transition into the next series of events. Thanks to all who participated in the survey(s), and I hope to see many of you either creating or enjoying all the works we’ll be creating for GO in the next year.

Truth in Translation
Aziraphale and Crowley get caught up in the destruction of the Tower of Babel. When each jumps to a wildly incorrect conclusion, they stumble upon deeper truths. GOEvents Name That Author Round 6. Prompt: No conversation's a good place to start...I wanna speak in tongues 500 word limit. This is a slightly expanded version of my submission. ❖ And the LORD said, Behold, the people… have one language….❖ Let us go down, and confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech… ❖ So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth. Genesis 11:6-8 Aziraphale gazed up at the towering ziggurat. The shouts of hundreds of masons and carpenters created an energetic chorus buoying their shared purpose. The flow of people and materials was mesmerizing.
“Amazing, aren’t they?”
Aziraphale checked his delight at the familiar voice over his left shoulder. One hundred years had passed since the flood, since they went their separate ways. He took a breath before responding neutrally, “Crowley, what are you doing here?”
“Come to see the tower. You? On assignment?”
“No, just admiring their ingenuity. They’ve done so well since the, uh, incident.”
“Incident? Is that what your lot call it? Murder is more like it. Look at Sarah over there. She has her great grandmother’s smile, but she’ll never know it. Her grandmother was too young to remember her own mother’s face,” snarled Crowley as he paced around the angel in agitation.
“Oh! You’re here to check in on the descendants of your stowaways!” exclaimed Aziraphale, almost fondly.
The demon charged at Aziraphale, stopping so close their noses almost touched. “Shhhh! I thought we agreed not to speak that word, for everyone’s safety.”
“Really, Crowley. Do you have to be so theatrical? I mean….”
A thundering explosion interrupted him. The previously boisterous voices quieted, and the earth shook violently. A cacophony of screams soon replaced the silence. Crowley snapped and extended his wing over the angel as the tower crumbled before them. Moments later, everyone standing clear of the rubble disappeared.
Aziraphale emerged from under Crowley’s wing, shock turning quickly to anger. “Crowley, what did you do!”
The demon stared at him in confusion.
“Answer me!”
Crowley tried to parse the garbled sounds coming from Aziraphale. As he surveyed the deserted debris, understanding dawned on him. “The rapture. Already?”
Aziraphale faltered at the sound of the demon’s incoherent hisses. Why is he hissing? And trembling? Where did everyone go?
The Great War. Crowley swallowed down the rising bile. I can’t fight you. You’re the only perfect thing in Her creation.
Aziraphale watched, baffled, as Crowley fell to his knees and bowed his head in surrender.
“Crowley, what’s happening?” demanded Aziraphale, bewildered by the demon’s behavior. He stepped forward and placed a gentle hand on Crowley’s shoulder.
“Stop staring and smite me!” roared Crowley, pushing the hand away. “Don’t you understand? I won’t fight you!”
Aziraphale ignored Crowley’s vehement sibilants and knelt in front of him. The demon’s golden eyes held no malice, only despair. “We’ll figure this out. With no humans about, we can miracle…. Oh.” Aziraphale inhaled sharply, realizing the falsehood of his words. She promised to never destroy them again. That can only mean the Great War is starting.
Aziraphale took Crowley’s hands in his own. An incomprehensible sadness filled him. “Why do I feel like I’m losing something of immeasurable worth? We’re enemies. Aren’t we?”
Crowley was puzzling over Aziraphale’s mournful tone when the angel engulfed him in a tight embrace. His fear receded as he focused on the all-enveloping soft warmth, savouring this last glorious moment before the End. “If only we could go off. Together.”
“What was that, dear?” Aziraphale gasped.
Crowley pulled back in embarrassed shock. “You understood that?”
“No, it just sounded less hissy,” the angel lied, cheeks flushing. A bright light briefly immersed him. “Ah. It seems we were caught up in the creation of languages . I do wish they would consult me on policy issues. And before you ask, they’re all safe - just scattered throughout Her creation.”
“Bastards. Well, the wine’s still here. I’m getting drunk enough to forget this whole thing. Join me, angel?” https://archiveofourown.org/works/25701040

Wednesday News & Notes from Ocala Horse Properties
Happening this week – the 2024 $100,000 Conceal Grand-Prix Eventing Showcase at Bruce’s Field, presented by Taylor, Harris Insurance Services (GPE) Organizing Committee and the Aiken Horse Park Foundation.
Making the podium at all five editions of the event – and scoring a hattrick of wins – Liz Halliday has three chances to defend her title, with Cooley Quicksilver (winner of the 4*S at Kentucky last season), Cooley Nutcracker (winner of two 4*L events in 2023) and last year’s champ (and Kentucky 5* third place finisher) Miks Master C all set to take their turn in the start box. It’s tough to bet against her, but with a super-stellar lineup, the competition is hot hot hot!
We’ll see all the US big hitters – the likes of Phillip Dutton, Will Coleman, Buck Davidson, Will Faudree and Lillian Heard Wood, who all bring two rides, with Boyd Martin and Doug Payne each having three shots at the title. And the list goes on… Maryland 5* winner Austin O’Connor is over from Ireland, and there are not one but two 2023 Pan-Am Games gold medalists in the form of Caroline Pamukcu (individual gold) and Canada’s Coleen Loach (team gold). There are just too many top contenders to mention here – one thing’s for sure, we’re in for a stacked competition and we can’t wait!
The action kicks off with dressage at 8am EST on Friday, followed by show jumping at 3pm. The cross country gets underway on Saturday at 12:30pm. You can watch it all play out live on H&C+ (subscription required) and we’ll of course be bringing you everything you need to know – keep it locked onto EN and follow @goeventing as we dive into the 2024 season.

Also of note: Today is National Public Sleeping Day, which, to my understanding, means that it’s entirely legal – and indeed encouraged – for you to take a nap, wherever and whenever the Zs take you. Think staff meetings, while waiting in line, during particularly boring conversations you’d rather not be having – please not in the saddle. Apparently Oliver Townend snatches forty winks between cross country rounds at 5* events, which makes it totally plausible for me to round this off by saying go eventing, and nap.

Wednesday News and Reading
We’re kicking off today’s News and Reading with a couple of cool opportunities – first up the chance to have your event horse’s conformation critiqued by former USEA YEH Championship judge Chris Ryan. All you need to do is send a conformation photo and short video of your horse – straight on and from the side – being led at walk and trot to [email protected] and it’ll be considered as part of the USEA’s Conformation Critique series. You only have ‘til Wednesday March 6th, so cameras at the ready and have at it.
Next up, bookings are open for British Eventing’s webinar with Sally Mcginn from Mind Oddessey, where she’ll be talking all things reflection. From making balanced reflections and dealing with post competition blues to identifying strengths and working on the gaps, the session sounds like it’ll be super helpful for those of us who are striving towards competition aspirations as well as less competitive but thoughtful riders who use reflection to improve their performance when working towards goals at home. The webinar will take place on March 14th at 7pm GMT and costs £15.
And while we’re on the topic of things coming up – what better way to celebrate an extra day this year than to get quizzy with it? In aid of the British Eventing Support Trust but absolutely open to anyone around the world who enjoys getting quizzical, this leap year quiz night is sure to be a blast – and there’s a trophy at stake. If I win, can I claim it as an eventing win? My general knowledge may not be quite so general as it could be, but I’ve for sure got a better chance of winning a quiz than an event. If you’re up for the competition, you need to register to receive the Zoom link, which you can do right here. The questions will be comin’ at ya from 7pm GMT / 2pm EST tomorrow (February 29th). See you there.
With a bunch of medals to his name, including Olympic gold, US based British eventer and USEF Emerging and Development Coach Leslie Law is a voice we listen to when it comes to training tips. 17-year-old Austin Skeens got to do just that in person when he had the opportunity to train with Leslie as part of the USEF E18 training program, and lucky for us, he’s shared what he learned. With tips for all three phases, from straightness in dressage and nailing your show jumping warm up to making good choices for your horse on the cross country, there’s lots here for us all to take away and work on.
Yes, we’re once more revisiting the phenomenon that is Shane Rose’s mankini – which is apparently not one of the silliest riding costumes ever seen. A research poll conducted by the ‘Chillax Institute’ has concluded that the scrap of neon orange was actually a rather fitting choice, given its aerodynamic properties and the weather in Australia at this time of year. And as far as the accolade of ‘silliest riding costume’ goes, Shane’s mankini didn’t even make the top-five on the list. It’s probably time we put ‘mankini-gate’ to bed, but there’s for sure one more laugh to be had in this satirical jaunt.
And finally… Saving the best / weirdest / most hilarious ‘til last, I present to you donkey basketball. Yes, really. It’s basically basketball on donkey-back, and the justification for such an intriguing addition to the sport is the added unpredictability these stubborn equines bring to the game. You will see plenty of planting. You probably won’t see a donkey doing a slam dunk. (If you’re in any doubt that this is a thing, here’s proof.)

Video Break
We’re so lucky to be involved in a sport where age and sex pose relatively limited barriers to not only enjoying the sport, but also competing at the highest levels within it. From show jumping legend John Whittaker, who’s still at the top of his game aged 68, to eventing’s own eight-time Olympian, Andrew Hoy, aged 65, and long-time hero Pippa Funnell, who’s smashing it for the horsegirls at 55, there are many shining examples of the longevity that equestrian sports provide athletes. At the other end of the scale are competitors such as Sky Brown, Britain’s youngest ever summer Olympian, who won a bronze medal in skateboarding in Tokyo. Here’s what went down when King of Dressage Carl Hester met the young talent:

Wahoo! I finished my romcom!
The last chapter, Stative Verbs, Present Tense, is up now, and if you like happy endings and gratuitous sex scenes, you’ll enjoy this!
“I couldn’t stop thinking about you either,” he said, and Crowley’s expression opened into something like hope.
One of them must have reached for the other, or perhaps they met half way, Aziraphale wasn’t sure. Crowley’s hands cupped his face and he reached for Crowley’s waist, tugged him closer, until their mouths brushed together. Gently, tentatively even, but still the best thing ever.
A huge shout out again to @summerofspock for the beta reading and encouragement, and to @yamisnuffles for the cover image.
Thank you also to everyone on the GoEvents server, for everything. You are all incredibly delightful.
