SHOOT DAY

The kit hired out from the innovation studio included the GoPro max, tripod, helmet mounts, and I bought a head mount for the POV shots. 

We spent the day shooting various exercises to get some variety for the advert. I wanted to make the most of having the camera out as I had booked it for a week, so managed to source a paddle board to add to the shoot. Along with skateboarding, cycling, running, and beach activities. 

I made sure to get a POV shot as well as a 360 shots of each activity, this gave me enough shots to choose from when it came to the edit.

GoPro Hero 9 Black: Good action camera for both amateurs and professionals

From a new 23.6-megapixel sensor for 5K video recording to a dual-screen design and bigger-capacity battery, the Gorpo Hero 9 Black features that most GoPro enthusiasts had long been waiting for. Bigger than any of its previous iterations, this action camera might require some tweaking in your existing mount set-up. For example, I had to redo the J-mount set-up on the helmet to get the right point-of-view (PoV). Though changing the mount set-up to fit the GoPro Hero 9 Black can be a bit of a hassle, the upgrades and new features justify the changes in dimension. Moreover, it has built-in mounting rings which GoPro introduced with the Hero 8 Black; they do away with the need for a camera cage to mount the camera. So, even as the camera dimensions and weight have increased, these feel like a marginal change in real-life usage.

The dual-screen design is another major change that is apparent on the GoPro Hero 9 Black. The action camera has a 2.27-inch rear touch screen with a touch zoom function on the back that shows relevant information and doubles up as a digital viewfinder, and a tiny 1.4-inch square colour screen on the front that is not information rich but covers the basics and shows live preview. Developments in Photography Industry #6

Over the recent years digital photography has been developing at a rapid pace. One of the most recent developments being drones, and as drones get cheaper and cheaper more photographers will start using them. Drone photography has spiked in popularity as it allows photographers to capture great content with ease that they never used to be able to get before. Photo Editing has become a lot easier in recent years as well with the introduction to free software such as canva and Fotor, even if you don't want to edit your photos yourself you can easily get the desired look by using presets which a lot of professional photographers release and sell. There's even specialised companies that offer photo editing services. Due to smartphones and the increase in social media advertisement vertical photography has become more and more popular, mainly because this takes up the most screen space on apps like instagram. And online apps like instagram have started to become a more mainstream way for photographers to advertise their work and some people could argue that instagram accounts can be a photographers main portfolio.

 Action cameras such as GoPro and DJIs OSMO action are becoming a lot more accessible with new models coming out with cheaper prices and also the camera's quality is always increasing to the point where they can rival professional cameras. They are also used for a lot more than action sports as they are pocket sized influencers tend to use them a lot for travel photography as they are easy to carry around. This then led to the development of 360 cameras which allow photographers to capture 360 degree photos which can be really good for panoramic photography and they can also be used to create some really creative shots such as small planet shots.

 Very recently Gopro released the GoPro max which is a 360 camera as well as having all the functions of their other action cameras, this camera would be very useful for capturing unique POV shots especially now that it can take 360 photo and video.

Public Market Views - 3/7/20 - 3/14/20

(I’m publicly publishing these notes I’ve messaged to friends, delayed for context of future posts) Disclaimer: Not investment advice.

3/7/2020 Note

With the markets taking a sharp turn the past few weeks, I’ve had various conversations with other public market investors and friends about what they are doing with their portfolios. A lot of sentiment has been one of aggressive buying due to lack of value change on the long-term. While I think for some more resilient tech stocks, this is a fair POV (though not one I’m exercising, which I’ll go into more later), I think this post on catching a falling knife is a good read for many to remind us about the downside momentum and death spiral that can occur. Markets are off about 12% from their highs, which feels like a lot, especially because there have been various doomsday tweets and articles about the large falls to the major indices. However this massive run has created far more value than 12% and with increased volatility in the markets, we could see very sharp moves in both directions. Some seem to believe that this return to high vol environment is maxing out and temporary. In addition the bull case is that the narrative surrounding widespread confirmed cases and panic that comes with that has already been priced into the markets by institutional investors. With that said, Chinese markets have largely recovered from their tumultuous few months as they’ve gotten somewhat under control of covid-19 seemingly (admittedly, I’m not an expert in what is actually happening over there).

The differences between the US markets and Chinese markets are partially information driven, which is a dynamic to take into account. In addition, the famed second wave is another one to take into account. If we believe that a second wave of COVID is to come in the Fall, any sharp rally we see in june/july could be overwritten by more fear of a widespread resurgence of COVID.

If you’re interested in reading some poor speculation, read on for what I’ve done:

In retirement accounts/savings I moved a bit more into bonds at the end of 2019 but largely have retirement accounts setup via Roboadvisors or a range of broader based market coverage ETFs. I continue to hold specific longs across healthcare/biotech and some tech companies (like AMZN, MSFT, and others).

I’ve been holding ~30% in cash since early-2019.

My speculative portfolio has been quite different.

Over the past 2-3 years I’ve selectively been shorting an increasing number of names due to large run ups or various theses that I have across broad sectors (and some specific pairs trades). I’ve previously tweeted about GoPro, Tesla, Nio, Snap, and Darden (and probably others), and have held many other short positions friends have heard me spew on). In addition I’ve been shorting real estate via REITs (up until this past month, this trade has been mediocre). Towards the end of 2019 I also began to build short positions In broader indices as hedges and as we entered an election year that felt like it could bring some market turmoil. This included going long on VOL both via VIX options and ETFs related to being long short, mid, and long-term volatility. Other thoughts on shorts here.

From Feb 24th to March 5th, largely due to both political and Covid-19 concerns/views I sold off a variety of equity longs (including all broader international-related positions except for some in biotech (BGNE is an example of a long here) while largely keeping long tech exposure sans selling Netflix.

I’m prepping for holding cash if the market downturns and will continue to add to tech positions (most notably Amazon, if possible).

3/14/2020 Note

Over the past week I’ve secured a net short position to the market and near close today I piled into that short more, shorting the S&P 500 via short-term options, while also adding to my shorts on select stocks (the largest of which is now URBN) as well as indices (the largest of which are the Russell 2000 and FTSE). I frankly can’t believe the way in which the market rallied as Trump spoke today, despite how obvious it was that he was pumping the markets headed into the weekend. He is supposed to speak on Sunday which will likely be him trying to prep the markets to get ready for Monday, as he knows that as more data comes and more panic sets in, markets will be ready for a sell off. My first wave of options are set to expire end of next week and are expecting a ~10% drop in the S&P in order to break even. I think that is incredibly likely.
