I think most of us should take the whole ai scraping situation as a sign that we should maybe stop giving google/facebook/big corps all our data and look into alternatives that actually value your privacy.
i know this is easier said than done because everybody under the sun seems to use these services, but I promise you it’s not impossible. In fact, I made a list of a few alternatives to popular apps and services, alternatives that are privacy first, open source and don’t sell your data.
right off the bat I suggest you stop using gmail. it’s trash and not secure at all. google can read your emails. in fact, google has acces to all the data on your account and while what they do with it is already shady, I don’t even want to know what the whole ai situation is going to bring. a good alternative to a few google services is skiff. they provide a secure, e3ee mail service along with a workspace that can easily import google documents, a calendar and 10 gb free storage. i’ve been using it for a while and it’s great.
a good alternative to google drive is either koofr or filen. I use filen because everything you upload on there is end to end encrypted with zero knowledge. they offer 10 gb of free storage and really affordable lifetime plans.
google docs? i don’t know her. instead, try cryptpad. I don’t have the spoons to list all the great features of this service, you just have to believe me. nothing you write there will be used to train ai and you can share it just as easily. if skiff is too limited for you and you also need stuff like sheets or forms, cryptpad is here for you. the only downside i could think of is that they don’t have a mobile app, but the site works great in a browser too.
since there is no real alternative to youtube I recommend watching your little slime videos through a streaming frontend like freetube or new pipe. besides the fact that they remove ads, they also stop google from tracking what you watch. there is a bit of functionality loss with these services, but if you just want to watch videos privately they’re great.
if you’re looking for an alternative to google photos that is secure and end to end encrypted you might want to look into stingle, although in my experience filen’s photos tab works pretty well too.
oh, also, for the love of god, stop using whatsapp, facebook messenger or instagram for messaging. just stop. signal and telegram are literally here and they’re free. spread the word, educate your friends, ask them if they really want anyone to snoop around their private conversations.
regarding browser, you know the drill. throw google chrome/edge in the trash (they really basically spyware disguised as browsers) and download either librewolf or brave. mozilla can be a great secure option too, with a bit of tinkering.
if you wanna get a vpn (and I recommend you do) be wary that some of them are scammy. do your research, read their terms and conditions, familiarise yourself with their model. if you don’t wanna do that and are willing to trust my word, go with mullvad. they don’t keep any logs. it’s 5 euros a month with no different pricing plans or other bullshit.
lastly, whatever alternative you decide on, what matters most is that you don’t keep all your data in one place. don’t trust a service to take care of your emails, documents, photos and messages. store all these things in different, trustworthy (preferably open source) places. there is absolutely no reason google has to know everything about you.
do your own research as well, don’t just trust the first vpn service your favourite youtube gets sponsored by. don’t trust random tech blogs to tell you what the best cloud storage service is — they get good money for advertising one or the other. compare shit on your own or ask a tech savvy friend to help you. you’ve got this.

This might be it for my old computer…
Got the last update in 2022 and is now telling me that it’s not a supported browser even though I’m using chrome. It never worked well but it’s near and dear to my heart ❤️ I’m going to see if I can keep using it
It looks like it’s working fine? Ok after reading it says “for the best experience with Google workspace use a supported up to date browser you’ll have access to the latest features and you’ll get improved security and performance.” So I think I’ll be ok. For reference, it says that chrome OS devices receive 10 years of updates. To be fair I think I got it a year or two after it came out. Never worked great but it still runs docs and I will be damned it I use any other computer for writing. I just put new stickers on it!!!! Can’t die on me now! If I could I would use this thing well into my 80’s and it’s been a trouper with all the crud it’s seen so honestly it might!

As the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policy ramps up, people have started to seriously consider their privacy and security when crossing into the United States. That’s especially true when it comes to searches of travelers’ phones and other devices, which US Customs and Border Protection agents have broad authority to search. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take, such as deleting certain apps from your personal phone or using an alternative phone that’s set up just for traveling internationally.
Operatives with Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have spent the first months of the Trump administration clawing their way into US government systems. It’s now starting to become clear exactly what those systems are and what kind of data on US residents they hold. WIRED this week detailed the 19 systems DOGE operatives have access to just at the Department of Health and Human Services.
Pope Francis died on Monday at age 88. The passing of the supreme pontiff sets in motion a conclave, the secretive process used to select the new pope. To protect the conclave’s integrity and try to prevent leaks, a wide range of security measures will be put in place, from privacy film on windows at the Vatican to signal jammers and sweeps for hidden microphones.
Google recently announced the initial rollout of end-to-end encrypted email for Google Workspace accounts, which is good news for the privacy of enterprise-level users. When a Workspace user emails a non-Workspace account, the recipient gets an invitation to create a guest account so they can read the email. Unfortunately, security experts say, this will likely create new opportunities for phishing attacks, as scammers try to bait people with fake invitations.
But that’s not all. Each week, we round up the security and privacy news we didn’t cover in depth ourselves. Click the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there.
SignalGate is the scandal that just won’t die—at least not if you’re US secretary of defense Pete Hegseth. On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Hegseth had installed Signal on a “second computer in his office” so that he could “use Signal in a classified space, where his cellphone and other personal electronics are not permitted, and communicate with ease with anyone.”
The Associated Press on Thursday added to the picture of Hegseth’s reported Signal use, revealing that Hegseth got a second internet line installed that connected directly to the public internet rather than through the Pentagon’s secured connection, according to sources who spoke with the AP. Hegseth allegedly did this so he could use that second computer with Signal installed. Then on Friday, The New York Times found that the phone number associated with Hegseth’s Signal account—the one he used in that infamous group chat—is easily discoverable online, potentially opening him up to targeted cyberattacks by hostile nations.
Cybercriminals Stole a Record-Breaking $16.6 Billion From US Entities in 2024
Despite a steady flow of arrests and takedowns of online scammers, cybercriminals are operating at unprecedented levels and making more money than ever. Two reports released this week reveal the stark scale of online criminality. Last year in the United States, businesses and individuals lost $16.6 billion to online crimes, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center—that’s the highest figure ever reported and a leap of 33 percent compared to 2023. In 2024, there were 859,532 complaints about potential online crimes, with the FBI saying phishing and spoofing complaints account for 193,000 of them, followed by extortion with 86,000 complaints. Investment scams, which often involve cryptocurrency, made up more than $6 billion of the total losses, with business email compromise scams leading to losses of $2.7 billion.
Around the same time, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime highlighted that giant scam compounds in Southeast Asia—where human trafficking victims are forced to work scamming people—are generating $40 billion in profits per year and keep on growing. These industrial-scale scam organizations, which are often linked to Chinese criminals, heavily use investment scams (sometimes called pig-butchering) to con people out of their life savings and are expanding outside of the region. “It spreads like a cancer,” Benedikt Hofmann of the UNODC said in a statement.
Google Chrome Won’t Ditch Creepy Tracking Cookies After All
Back in 2020, Google announced its Chrome browser would stop using third-party cookies, which track people around the web, and would move to a less creepy way of powering its advertising businesses. Web browsers such as Safari, Firefox, and Brave ditched cookies years before Google made the announcement. But this week, after countless U-turns, failed efforts to develop alternatives, and criticism that proposals to replace cookies would favor Google, the company announced it will, in fact, keep the trackers in Chrome.
“We’ve made the decision to maintain our current approach to offering users third-party cookie choice in Chrome,” wrote Anthony Chavez, the Google VP in charge of its Privacy Sandbox efforts, in a blog post. “As we’ve engaged with the ecosystem, including publishers, developers, regulators, and the ads industry, it remains clear that there are divergent perspectives on making changes that could impact the availability of third-party cookies,” Chavez wrote. While the US government is proposing that Google sell off Chrome as part of its antitrust case against the company, it’s still possible to turn off third-party cookies or use a privacy-friendly

How to Challenge the Digital Divide and Poverty
In "The Revolution Will Be Digitized: Afrocentricity and the Digital Public Sphere," Anna Everett focuses on the intersection of African Americans and their efforts to bridge the digital divide. African Americans, referred to as "black technophiles," have been driven to break barriers in the digital workspace. They advocate for the use of social platforms and technology as tools to empower education, businesses, and political activism within African American communities.
Many technological platforms and corporations are designed with biases against poor communities, which often lack the resources for modern digital infrastructure necessary to empower the next generation. Black technophiles challenge a system that has neglected marginalized African American communities, demanding equal access to the opportunities of the digital age.
How to Break the Modern "Jim Codes"
In the article "The New Jim Codes," Ruha Benjamin examines the historical parallels between past and present forms of discrimination, focusing on how technological inequality resembles the tactics used during the Jim Crow era. Benjamin argues that algorithms and artificial intelligence disproportionately discriminate against people of color, compared to white Americans, based on the biased data used to program these platforms.
The "New Jim Codes" are unethical in minority communities due to the lack of human oversight and the potential for flawed technology to perpetuate discrimination.
At What Age Should Digital Data Begin Being Collected?
In "Algorithms of Oppression," Safiya Noble provides critical insight into how the data collected from young people through surveillance can reinforce racial and gender biases, limiting opportunities. This data is often used to perpetuate systems of inequality, frequently without the knowledge or consent of the individuals involved. Innocent people, particularly children, are caught between biased algorithms and security risks, with little accountability from agencies meant to provide neutral oversight.
Are You Protected from Safe Searches?
In the introduction to "Algorithms of Oppression," Safiya Noble argues that while search engines are often perceived as neutral, they are, in reality, filled with racism and sexism. Google search algorithms, in particular, tend to prioritize content that often works against women of color, especially Black women. As a result, minority women and girls are frequently sexualized on the internet, with harmful platforms gaining access to innocent users without safeguards or accountability. Protecting users should be a priority for search engines, but these algorithms often serve to exploit and maintain power over the user instead.

Just rambling about how being online is these days...
For as long as I can remember, I've always been rather fatalistic about online privacy, security, etc.
At the end of the day, if governments (US, Russia, North Korea, etc.), big tech (Google, Facebook, Amazon), or a really determined hacker wanted in on my computer or online accounts, they're getting in eventually. This isn't to say I have anything useful other than the normal stuff people would have.
But seriously, something like 1/3 of the online world STILL uses Windows XP. Trying being online with XP these days and see how long it takes before you get something accessing your computer without authorization (it'll be like 10 minutes at most).
But that usually didn't stop me from taking basic security measures.
I never realized I had actually had a line in the sand with all of this.
Until Microsoft Copilot.
That was the final straw. Like, that broke something in me where I now spend many hours and days since early February essentially de-Googling and de-Big-Teching.
I've moved to Linux (Linux Mint on my daily driver, Kubuntu on my gaming rig, and Debian 12 for my home network) from Windows.
Moved away from Gmail to two different email services.
Switched so many apps on my phone from Google to FOSS apps. And when my phone finally stops getting any kind of security updates, I'll try to flash it with a custom ROM. If it bricks the phone, oh well, I'd have to get a new one eventually. But it buys me some more time with my phone AND isn't connected to Google, all the better.
Been using Collabora over Microsoft Office (trying to find a Google Workspace alternative has been an absolute chore and is still ongoing).
Installed Container extensions in Firefox for Google, Facebook, Amazon, & Reddit.
In the process of moving from Google Drive to two services with servers not in the US.
And the process continues.
I know some of this is a reaction to the lack of control I have in my life right now especially, given whom my employer is. And this is something I can at least exert a modicum of control, even if it is futile in the end.
But if it makes it harder for someone to track me for five more fucking seconds... WORTH IT.
Spite's a powerful motivator.

If you lost access to your email tomorrow, what would you do?
Once upon a time, I used to think Gmail was fine for a business. It was free, easy, and setting up something more professional felt like a hassle. But I’ve seen firsthand what happens when that gamble doesn’t pay off.
One day… BAM. Locked out. No warning. No explanation. Just “suspicious activity detected”, and suddenly, access was gone. Every client email? Vanished. Every invoice? Trapped. Google support? Useless. Hours spent trying to recover the account, only to hit a dead end.
And it’s not just one unlucky case, I’ve seen entire businesses crumble because they relied on a free email account. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Here’s why it’s a terrible idea:
Big Tech doesn’t owe you anything.
If Google/Microsoft/Yahoo decides your account looks “suspicious,” they can shut it down. No warning, no appeal, no customer service to help you. You’re just… locked out forever.
Hackers LOVE free email accounts.
Guess what’s super easy to hack? A free Gmail. Brute-force attacks, phishing scams, leaked passwords, it happens all the time. And once they’re in? They can scam your clients, change your payment info, and pretend to be you.
They scan your emails.
Yeah, Gmail reads your emails. They call it “advertising data” but if you’re discussing contracts, finances, or literally anything private, do you really want some algorithm combing through that?
It makes your business look cheap.
Would you hire a lawyer with [email protected]? Exactly. If you’re running a serious business, your email should look serious too.
What I wish I knew sooner:
✔️ The secure option: ProtonMail – encrypted, private, no data scanning.
✔️ The business option: Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 – same convenience, but with your own domain and actual security controls.
If you’re still using a free email, fix it before it’s too late.
Reach out if you have any questions!

Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, one of the first young technologists brought on to Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has returned to government shortly after resigning.
“Edward Coristine joined the Social Security Administration this week as a special government employee,” Stephen McGraw, an SSA spokesperson, tells WIRED. “His work will be focused on improving the functionality of the Social Security website and advancing our mission of delivering more efficient service to the American people.”
Multiple sources at the SSA tell WIRED that Coristine has appeared in person to work onsite at the agency’s Woodlawn, Maryland, headquarters. One SSA employee says they saw Coristine with DOGE engineer Aram Moghaddassi, a current X and former Neuralink employee deployed at the agency. The pair was spotted at the SSA cafeteria as recently as Monday, although it’s unclear what day this week Coristine’s employment officially began. “Coristine looked nervous, almost embarrassed,” the SSA source says. “Aram was on the phone with someone … then said, ‘Yes, I’m with him right now,’ gesturing to Big Balls.”
Coristine and Moghaddassi did not immediately reply to requests for comment.
Coristine’s rehiring comes after a White House official told WIRED on Tuesday that the 19-year-old had resigned from his position in government. A Trump administration official confirms to WIRED that Coristine did indeed resign on Monday, and then was brought back by the SSA later in the week.
Coristine became a full-time government employee at the General Services Administration (GSA) on May 30, WIRED reported earlier this month, converting from the restricted special government employee classification, which has a time limit of 130 days. As of Tuesday afternoon, Coristine’s Google Workspace account with the GSA had been disabled and his name did not appear on a list of DOGE employees on the federal payroll maintained by a senior administration official. The GSA did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Coristine was one of a handful of DOGE engineers who worked across many government agencies, including the Office of Personnel Management, the Department of Health and Human Services, the US Agency for International Development, the State Department, and the Department of Homeland Security, among others. Coristine isn't known to have previously worked at the SSA.
A 19-year-old high school graduate who worked at Musk’s Neuralink for several months, Coristine has gone by the handle “Big Balls” online and joined the government with no prior experience. He has also founded a company called Tesla.Sexy LLC in 2021 and worked for a startup known for hiring blackhat hackers; he was reportedly fired after being suspected of leaking internal information.
Sahil Lavingia, a former DOGE member who WIRED first identified at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, told WIRED that “it felt like there was no real connection besides Elon being in the White House.” Speaking about an all-DOGE meeting with Musk held in March, Lavingia says, “the only person from the White House was Katie Miller.” Miller left the White House with Musk and now works for the centibillionaire.
Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University, tells WIRED that the White House not knowing that a recently departed employee had been rehired was “abnormal, but it seems to be normal for this administration.”

Enshittification examples I'm dealing with today that aren't even related to Google because THAT's a pile that's been explored at length already:
Those are at work, where I don't control which OS or software versions I use.
It didn't use to make any difference, but now it's way harder to stretch a window from the top than from the bottom or the sides. It's not impossible, but it's way harder. It didn't use to be.
The latest advances in signing security require two-steps verification. I'm not saying it's not more secure, for all I know it is, but it's certainly WAY more annoying to have to whip out my phone to sign in again at random times. And when I got a new phone, I had to call the help desk to set up the thing again, it's literally designed to not let me do it by myself (that desgin choice did not extend to including any information anywhere I might find it that this was the case).
I now have to keep an eye on Microsoft Team chat, in addition to emails and texts. And if I'm looking to look up something someone told me, I can have fun searching there as well as my emails.
If you have a split screen or freeze panes in Excel, going down your workbook with page down no longer works. The screen is going to move. It's going to look like the cell on which the focus is is moving. But when you get close and switch to the up or down key to relocate exactly, you're brought back to the top. This is consistent with freeze panes, it's random with split screens.
Using filters on a tab with a pivot table is no longer allowed. It crashes Excel completely when you try to use them, including on older workbooks. It will let you create them. But if you try to use them, Excel self destructs.
And older one but still a fun one: In Excel (or any office program) every window is now a separate instance with its own menu. So the menu is repeated on every window if you stack them horizontally, forcing you to collapse them or lose half your screen, or if you stack your windows vertically, it just gets squished into uselessness.
-Bonus: you want to minimize all of excel or move it all to one side? LOL. Nope. One window at a time baby!
So with all these independent separate windows that are probably eating up more CPU (Excel certainly has more trouble handling bigger workbooks and calculations than it used to) and that make screen management way harder and obliterated the idea of workspaces, at least if one window crashes the others are fine, right? ROFL. No. Crash one, they all go.
Did I mention crashes happen way more often now? Remember Windows 95? Yeah, like that. We're back to impulsive saving, honey! If you leave your desk, you never know what's waiting for you when you get back! Life is full of fun surprises.
Online help now has two varieties of response for these performance issues that didn't use to exist:
1. From microsoft: that's not a thing. You did something wrong somehow. Try re-installing everything. If it's still happening, try not using that function anymore and make your workbooks smaller. It used to work fine in the previous version? No it didn't. What previous version? You're hallucinating.
2. From other users: go in the registry and either learn a lot of things about registries or just trust that this random internet user is not suggesting something that will make several things worse. Assuming of course you even can access the registry.
