You wake up the next morning Paige still on FaceTime and you see her standing in her bathroom getting dressed. You peak open an eye and see a glimpse of her abs when you hear Paige speak “I can see you ya know?” You sit up stretching “I’m just admiring the very beautiful view” you hear Paige let out a laugh and smile picking up the phone. “Soo what are you doing today” you ask Paige. “I just have a practice from 10 to 2 and then I’m free, what about you pretty girl?” “Well I have a meeting at 12 and then I need to go to the store Juney and I need some food, but um I was wondering if maybe you’d wanna come over” You weren’t usually this bold but with the sleepiness still present you felt a little bolder. Paige paused and looked up at the screen “ I was gonna ask you if you’d wanna go out to dinner” Paige laughed. “What if you come over after your practice we’ll go to the store, cook together, and then see what happens from there?” “What happens from there huh?” “It is too early for you to have your mind in the gutter Ms.Bueckers” “Whatever you say, okay it’s time for me to go to practice but I’ll call you after?” “That sounds perfect I’ll see you later P” “See you later Mrs.Bueckers.”

You hear the call end and feel the blush creep up your face. Getting out of bed you decide to get ready for the day and clean up the nooks and cranny’s in your apartment before Paige is there later.

3 hours later

Now that your meeting was over and Paige’s practice almost was you decided it was time to vacuum and wash some dishes waiting for Paige to call. You never expected to feel so connected to someone over such a short time let alone your crush. While it thrilled you it was also frightening. Trying to push all of your thoughts down you pull out your computer and start listening to some of the beats that your producer sent over and you tried to brain storm some lyrics. You had to have them sent in by the end of the week since this song was a collaboration with your good friend Victoria Monét, You decided to give her a call and see what she thought about your verses. After a few rings the phone answered, “Heyyyy Y/n what’s up girl I haven’t seen you in forever, well actually I’d just seen pictures of you with a basketball player? I see you girl.” “ Okayyyy V we don’t gotta go there how’s my niecey I can’t believe that she’s four now” “ I know she’s getting so big.” You guys ended talking about everything but the verses til you started getting another call. “Oh V I gotta go I have a call on the other line” “Oooo is it the basketball player? I wanna meet her Y/n/n” “I’m sure we can work that out, bye V.” You hang up the call and answer Paige’s. “Hey P I was just on the phone with Victoria she said she wants to meet you by the way.” “I’d love to meet any of your friends.” “ Well you kinda know her you do listen to her music” “Wait Victoria? As in Monét?” “Yea who else?” “Babe you know I love her music.” You blush at her calling you babe it was her first time actually using a pet name. The conversation was short as you sent Paige your address and she was on her way so you decided to get ready. You take a quick shower and picked out your outfit, some lacy white lingerie for just in case with some low rise baggy jeans, a baggy cropped white shirt and the new Abundance Jordan 4s. You still had a little time til Paige showed up so you decided to watch a little bit of tv putting on Dynasty and waiting for Paige. About 25 minutes later there’s a knock on the door. You pick up Juney knowing she’ll try to run out the door. “Hey P” You say opening the door. She reached down to hug you and says Hey back. You guys decide to run to the store about a block away so you guys could start dinner. You grab your purse then you both head out the door.

Once you guys get into the store you start talking about dinner. As you guys walk down the aisle you admire Paige and her outfit, she had on baggy pants with a white tube top and an oversized vest. As you guys top in front of the deli you lean over and ask Paige “Isn’t it bulking season?” You say squeezing her bicep. She looked over at you and smiled “it is why? You wanna cop another feel?” “No” you say rolling your eyes “I just wanna know if you want steak, and we could do some truffle fries and a salad?” “Mmm that sounds good, let’s do it.”

You guys grabbed all of the things you needed for dinner and grabbed some cat food and a nice red wine. As you roll the cart out to your car Paige tells you she forgot something and that she’d be right back. Before you could say okay she was already taking off back in the store. As you go to grab the last bag Paige pops back up “what’d you forget?” “It’s a surprise I can’t tell you just yet” “mmm okay” you say putting the last bag in the car and Paige walked to put the cart away.

After the two of you made it back to your apartment Paige insisted on carrying all the bags and the surprise she got. So you both stood there in the elevator Paige with 6 bags on each arm and trying to hide one arm behind her back. You pull out your phone and take a picture of her looking absolutely ridiculous. You get to the door and hold it open for Paige as she tries to awkwardly make it through the door without you seeing her back. She sets all the bags down on the table and then asks you to close your eyes. You stand in the middle of your entryway and hear Paige shuffling around for about a minute then she tells you to open your eyes. As you open your eyes and they adjust back to the light you see rose petals on the ground leading to your small dining table where Paige stood with a bouquet of red roses. “Oh Paige, you didn’t have to do this” you said covering your mouth. “I figured it was the least I could do since we’re staying in for our first official date” Paige smiled at you as you walked closer to her staring into her eyes. Reaching up on your tip toes you put your hands onto her cheeks and slowly caress the side of her face as your eyes flicker between her eyes and lips, you pull her down into a kiss. Your breath caught as your lips finally connected, hesitant at first, testing the space between the both of you. Paige pulled you into her deepening the kiss as the flowers fell to the floor and Paige stumbled back towards the table. She kissed you fully her hands slipping to the sides of your neck until you both pull away out of breath foreheads pressed against each other. You pull back looking at her “I like you a lot Paige” you whisper to her. “I like you a lot too Y/n” Paige grinned softly at you. “Okay we need to cook this food.” You pull apart and decide that Paige is going to cook the steaks while you made the salad and prepped the fries. While cooking you and Paige listened to music and sharing short kisses.

Over dinner you and Paige decided that with how late it was Paige should stay over, even though you’d have to be up early because Paige had a game the next day. While you rinsed off the dishes and put them into the dishwasher Paige went to get her spend the night bag out of her car.

The both of you make your way to the bedroom and lay against the pillows scrolling on your phones in the comfortable silence. Minutes later you roll over to look at Paige, admiring the way her hair looked in a messy bun and with her glasses on. Her gaze met yours “you know you’re staring?” “I’m admiring,” Paige smiled down at you and rolled her eyes. “When do you need to leave tomorrow,” you ask “ Uhmm probably around noon cause I gotta be there at one” “can I come?” “Yea I’d really like that, maybe you could come out with the team after the game, if we win you know,” “You know you’re gonna win, and I’d love to come out with guys.”

You and Paige slide under the covers you finding peace in Paige’s arms as you drift off to sleep. You wake up to Paige’s alarm blaring but somehow only waking you up. Your eyes slowly flutter open and you feel Paige’s arm wrapped around your waist pulling you in close as you moved. Slowly picking up her arm you slide out of bed turning off her alarm and seeing it was only 9. You decide to let Paige sleep a little longer since she didn’t have to be up for a few more hours, meanwhile you took a quick shower and then put on your robe to make breakfast for you and Paige. You decide on avocado toast with scrambled eggs and bacon. As your finishing the eggs you feel hands snake around your waist hugging you from behind, “good morning sleepyhead” you said to Paige as she laid her head on your shoulder. “What are you makin,” she mumbles from your neck “just some breakfast before we leave, if you wanna take a shower you can.” Paige took you up on your offer and took a quick shower coming out in her warm up tracksuit. The both of you sit at the counter and eat as Paige talks about her game, it was UConn against Iowa State and Paige was talking about the plays she knew Geno was going to have the team play. Once it hit 11 you went to get dressed wearing low rise jeans and a UConn shirt that Paige had brought with her with a pair of red and white Nike low dunks, and a black purse. You and Paige walk out to her car and start the drive, Paige’s game was starting at 2 but she had to be there at 12 for practice, luckily the stadium would be open so you could wait inside for the game to start with the ticket Paige had gotten you.

The hour had gone by faster than both of you expected as you pulled up outside of the stadium as Paige had decided to drop you off so you would have to find your way around the campus. Paige pulls up outside of the building and leans towards you “okay you should be able to just go in and tell them you’re with me and then I’ll see you after,” he you nodded at Paige and leaned forward cupping her face kissing her deeply “I’ll see you after you win.”

Tantalising so at times. She had stayed her own hand too often to count; restrained at first by calculation and timing and Michiko’s insistence that things are kept civil between them and the best bulwark they had against the NUSA. And then, though she was loath to speak it aloud, by the wretched thing in her chest that felt lighter at the sight of him. It tightens now, caught in the same grip that holds her throat. There’s no relief to be found in the steady beep of the monitors or the slow rise and fall of his chest. None.

“I should kill you,” She says as she steps closer, slow in her meander to his bedside, “it’d be a kindness, honestly.”

He should bark a laugh and make some smart ass comment about mistaking ruthlessness for kindness, and she’d roll her eyes, waving him away in a dismissive motion. They’re the same, just different words for mercy.

Ruthlessness is mercy for herself, kindness for others. The latter is a dwindling supply in Night City, and she’s low in stock.

But he doesn’t laugh and she doesn’t reply, instead the chair creaks as she sits and reaches for his hand, her fingers threading through his. He must be low in it too, otherwise he’d have the decency to die already. It’d make things so much easier; he flatlines, a vacuum is left, and Arasaka can push a malleable substitute into the space he stood. Easy. Downright textbook.

Something’s been moved across the board, a piece into position. Her maybe, for the roiling need to bare her teeth is prickling uncomfortably, itching at her gums with no one to threaten.

She sighs deeply as she leans into the chair, squeezing his fingers between hers as she lifts his hand and clasps it between her own. It’s scuffed, the dull black etched grey, dented too. His fingers a tad stiff. That will need to be seen to – later, when she’s settled. Sated with the scent of fried circuitry and the death rattle of whoever she deems appropriate.

She imagines hopes the FIA aren’t done in Dogtown. Clean-up is likely in full swing; a loitering agent or two, disposable. Or maybe it’ll be a stray; a mutt of his own pack smelling opportunity with how thick it is in the air. Its usual sweetness tinged by something rotten for her.

Later. That’ll come later.

For now, she settles as best she can on the stiff-backed chair and presses a kiss to his knuckles. “You’re lucky I’m a little bit fond of you, Hansen.”

An understatement, but he’s not awake to call her on it. She’ll take advantages of his state where she can.

Not all heroes wear capes, sometimes they wear way too much jewelry..

Harper was always one to travel when not tied down, and with things seemingly up in the air, he'd spent a majority of his time teleporting about Azeroth visiting old haunts and rubbing elbows with old friends. One such place he visited was a little known underground location frequented by rogue mages, thieves, and cutthroats. This place had no name, at least not one the mongrel had ever heard spoken aloud, to access it meant you had been hand picked and granted entrance. It was here, at a little hole in the wall tavern called Aces, that Harper came across an old friend. Well.. friend was a strong word. They tolerated each other so long as one or the other had something to offer. Her name was Victoria Gallows, a massive woman standing just shy of seven feet tall and built like she was brought into this world with the sole purpose of hurling cattle over the moon. He caught her eye, and though she scowled and gave him the meatiest of fingers, she still beckoned him closer with a curling motion of that very same finger.

Making his way through the raucous crowd of Azeroth's gutter, Harper hopped up onto a seat beside Victoria and flashed that damned smile of his. "Didn't think I'd run into you so soon, I thought you'd still be in the Stockades."

"I still owe you for that one, you greasy little shit." She leaned on the table, and the poor thing groaned under the strain of supporting this mountain of a woman. "You left me there."

"In my defense.. my only way out was a pipe you couldn't put an arm through, let alone all of you." He chuckled softly, but flinched when she slammed a hand down on the table. "Heh.. right.. owe you. What did you have in mind?"

"You remember that slimy, weasel of a man, noble, kept tryin' to get up my skirt at that ball we were intendin' to pick clean?" Victoria smirked, laying a log of an arm over Harper's shoulders, his own chair threatening to buckle beneath him.

"I distinctly remember you botching that whole job because you let that twig of a man climb you like he was conquering the mightiest of mountains. You were nowhere to be seen when I needed you to cause a distraction." He grinned, though his humor died when the very thought of Vicky and that little worm of a noble in the throws of passion flashed in his mind. Likely looking as though she was wrestling a bed into submission. Harper shuddered.

"Regardless.. it's thanks to him that I am out so early. He's invited me to his home until I can.. get back on my feet." She placed a hand to her chest, batting her eyelashes. "And it would only be polite considering he helped free me with a hefty sum of gold."

"So.. we're robbin' the one man who loved you enough to not only bed you but buy your freedom?" Harper raised a brow. "Seems a little underhanded. Us bein' upstandin' members of society and all."

The two stared at each other for a brief moment before bursting into laughter.

"Give it a week, you'll need to get some gear together, but by then the week will be up and he will be throwing me a lovely party, guests from all around and with everyone and the staff in the ballroom, you will have the run of the place. Pretty much everything is fair game, but I have a few claims I wish to be set aside for me personally."

Harper nodded slowly, "Grapple hooks, rope, sleep darts and transport. A week is cutting it a little tight but I might be able to swing it. Can't use magic for this, soon as the old fool realizes he's been robbed it will take just one person to question if magic was used and then I'll have those damned investigators sniffing at my trail."

Vicky nodded, Harper could tell by the smug look on her face that she knew he was in. "For all I care you can have everything else, I will put a list of the items I want, just make sure those are taken first before anything else."

"Sounds like a deal to me." Harper slid out from under her arm and off the chair. "I'm staying in Old Town with our mutual friend, just send your list there."

Several hours and many portals later, Harper found himself wandering the Duskwood side of the river that ran between Westfall and cursed woods, skipping rocks across the water and singing to himself. He felt a tingling sensation in the back of his mind that gave him pause. "Is.. that a portal?"

It was, and it was close, as he strained his odd elven ears he could almost hear it over the running water and afternoon breeze. He made short work crossing the river, creating a frozen path across that he simply slid over. The tall grass kept him mostly hidden as he scurried through it, his senses taking the lead. The mongrel was just about to give up, believing his mind was playing tricks on him when he heard someone humming. As he peeked through the grass he caught a glimpse of fiery red hair, a long leather coat, and heard the clink of chainmail as the stranger ahead of him wandered along, seemingly without a care in the world.

Harper was about to call out to the stranger when something told him not to. Something was off, something familiar, but definitely off. The more he watched the stranger the more this unease seemed to grow until it was gnawing at the bit.

The stranger stopped, head tilting slowly to one side. "I know you're there."

Something about the voice, like it didn't fit, something about the man, like he didn't belong. The mongrel chose to remain hidden, throwing his voice to the east of the stranger. "I sensed magic, don't often sense it unless it's close so I was curious." There was something else he sensed, or rather a pair of things, one magical in nature and the other.. no.. that couldn't be, could it? Light?

The stranger began to move to where Harper's voice came from only to pause once more. "Trickery, interesting, either you are very crafty or very weak."

He threw his voice again, this time to the north. "I'm a lover not a fighter. So I suppose we can go with weak. All the same, one can never be too careful around mysterious mages."

"I am far from mysterious, perhaps we should introduce ourselves, hm? I'll start.." Harper watched as the stranger slowly turned in place, his eyes sweeping past the place the mutt was hiding. "My name is Weston Sunshield, Knight and Advisor to my Lord."

Sunshield.. the stranger should be a friend but how the name came from the man's lips dripped with poison.

"Sunshield, eh? I know a couple ladies who share that surname and an old man. You must be one of Lord Araian's people, hm?" This was very off, if he followed his gut he could very well ruin whatever good grace he'd built. Best to be certain. "Name's Harper, pleasure to meet you. I have seen these Sunshield folk up close, even the Lord himself, bit odd that I haven't seen you, though I suppose it's doubtful the few I've seen are all the Lord has in his charge." His voice came from the west now.

"I've been away on the Lord's orders, I only just returned." Weston twisted about, staring at the place Harper's voice came from. "Seems we are friends, why not show yourself, I have wine, dried meat, we can make a fire and get to know one another."

The mongrel couldn't shake this feeling that something wasn't right with this man. "That sounds lovely." He began, his voice now circling Weston. "There's just one thing.."

Arcane lashes wrapped around Weston's wrists and feet, stretching and lifting the man off the ground. At the end of each lash was a conjured familiar in the shape of a hand, holding each lash tight.

"I don't believe a damn word you're saying." Harper finally revealed himself, stepping out of the tall grass and staring up at the armored man who claimed the name Sunshield.

"Bloody gnomes! How I despise the whole lot of you. Always popping up and souring my mood. You will regret this, you little worm." Weston spat. And though venom laced his every word and rage etched every line of his face, these things felt foreign coming from the man.

And there it was, Harper could see it now, something was there that shouldn't be. Despite the rage, and the man's words, the eyes were lost, confused. "Chance or fate has brought us together, I don't know how you came to be afflicted as you are, but I promise you that you will not suffer whatever fate was in store for you."

Hope flashed in those eyes as whatever spoke through the man laughed, only it was cut short as another conjured hand appeared and clamped over Weston's mouth.

"Shh.. I need to think." Harper, using his fingers, began etching arcane runes in the air before him, muttering to himself, cursing, wiping the runes away and starting over. "I am guessing some sort of vessel you came in contact with housed whatever is speaking through you now. But what..." He continued to draw runes in the air, tongue between his teeth as worked. Whatever it was, the damn thing was well hidden.

The mongrel snapped his fingers and wiped the runes away beginning again, only this time the runes took on the shape of spectacles that Harper then placed on the bridge of his nose and began to study every inch of the man floating in the air before him. He found the source of the light first, a broken staff hanging by a chain from the man's belt. It wasn't until he reached the man's neck that he found the source of magic. A golden collar, invisible to the naked eye. As he studied the collar further he noticed a gem was crudely fashioned at the clasp of the collar, another source of magic. Very, very, very dark magic indeed. "A phylactery.. interesting."

Weston struggled against his arcane bonds, causing Harper to wag a finger at the man. "Now, now, save your strength. I only understand what I am about to do in theory. So.. whether I am successful or not.. this is reeeeeaaaally going to hurt."

The man went still as a statue as the mongrel began to work, arcane tethers lashing from his fingers to Weston's chest. "My, my, you're a twisted piece of work aren't you." As he connected with the darkness within Weston, he felt it attempt to latch onto Weston's soul. "No, no, none of that.. re.... release... come on... release...."

Blood began to drip from Harper's nose as he struggled and strained to perform magic far beyond his knowledge. He felt the arcane tethers wrapped completely around the darkness bit by bit until he was able to separate them from the man's soul and begin the arduous task of pulling it free. As the darkness began to leak from Weston's chest and slowly pull away from his body, the man locked his gaze on it like he'd seen it before. The tethers continued to wrap around it until they were all that could be seen surrounding whatever foul thing had been torn from Weston.

Harper, completely drained, collapsed to his knees as every spell under his control ended all at once. From the tethers fell a crystal with a soft thud onto the ground between him and Weston, and from the hands that had been holding the man up in the air, the redhead came crashing to the ground.

"Oh... oh that's a sprain. That's definitely a sprain." Weston groaned as he rolled onto his side to get a good look at his savior. "How did you.. how did you know?"

"It's a long story.. one we don't have time for as that crystal will only contain whatever that is for maybe a few days." Harper attempted to stand only to fall back on his hands. "Can you walk?"

"With difficulty.. but yes." Weston carefully pushing himself to his feet, attempting to not put too much weight on his injured leg. "He was headed to Southwatch, it's maybe a day from here, likely more in my condition."

"You're going to have to carry me." The mongrel raised a hand for Weston to grab. "I don't like the idea any more than you will like carrying me, but it's best we get moving."

"Well I was going to ask if you could come with me, but that works, the Lady of the house doesn't like me very much and another voice to my story will help speed things along." Weston took Harper's hand and hoisted the mutt onto his back, using his coat to hold the little one in place by tying it off over his chest. "I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't come along."

"You can thank me after my nap.." Harper didn't have much choice on remaining conscious much longer, he'd likely be out for at least a couple hours. The last thing he heard before the sweet surrender to a blackout not caused by liquor was the soft chuckle of his human steed.
