The sun rose early, its golden hues cascading over the training grounds of the Wind Hashira’s estate. Sanemi Shinazugawa sat on the wooden porch, idly tying bandages over his hands. Despite the early hour, his face was already painted with his signature scowl. Yet, today wasn’t just any day—it was his birthday.

Sanemi never celebrated birthdays. To him, they were just another reminder of the years filled with bloodshed, loss, and pain. But ever since you, his fiery, vibrant wife, entered his life, he found himself loosening his grip on the bitterness he’d carried for so long.

The clatter of pots and pans in the kitchen brought a small smirk to his lips. He didn’t have to look to know it was you. You always woke up before him, determined to bring a touch of joy into his otherwise somber life.

“Sanemi!” your voice rang out from inside the house, warm and commanding all at once. “Get your stubborn butt in here!”

He sighed but obeyed, his footsteps heavy as he entered the kitchen. There you were, standing in front of the stove, your full figure adorned in a simple, floral-patterned yukata that hugged your curves. Your dark skin glowed in the morning light, and your hair, styled effortlessly yet beautifully, framed your face. You were a vision—a stark contrast to the chaos of his life.

“What is it now?” he grumbled, crossing his arms, though his eyes betrayed a flicker of affection.

You turned, holding a steaming bowl of miso soup and a tray of freshly grilled fish. “Breakfast is ready, birthday boy.”

“Birthday boy?” he scoffed, though the faintest hint of a blush crept up his neck. “I told you, I don’t care about birthdays.”

“Yeah, well, I do,” you shot back, placing the food on the low table. “Now sit. Eat. And let me spoil you for once.”

He huffed but complied, sitting cross-legged at the table. As he picked up his chopsticks, you sat beside him, watching him intently.

“Stop staring,” he muttered, though his lips quirked up slightly.

“I can’t help it,” you teased. “You’re cute when you’re flustered.”

Sanemi clicked his tongue but didn’t respond. Deep down, he relished these moments—the rare times when he could be vulnerable, when he didn’t have to put on the façade of the gruff Hashira. With you, he could be himself.

After breakfast, you disappeared into the garden, leaving him to wonder what you were up to. He eventually followed, only to find you standing beneath the sakura tree, a small cake in your hands.

“Happy birthday, Nemi,” you said softly, your eyes brimming with love.

His heart clenched at the sight of you—your radiant smile, the effort you’d put into this day, all for him. He walked toward you, his steps hesitant.

“I don’t deserve this,” he said gruffly, looking away.

You frowned, setting the cake down on a nearby bench. Taking his hands in yours, you forced him to meet your gaze. “You deserve everything, Sanemi. You’ve fought so hard, carried so much. Let me be the one to remind you that you’re loved, okay?”

He swallowed hard, his throat tight. No one had ever spoken to him like that—no one but you.

Without a word, he pulled you into his arms, his face buried in the crook of your neck. “Thank you,” he whispered, his voice raw.

You held him close, your fingers running through his silvery hair. “Always, Nemi.”

As the day went on, the two of you spent it together, doing the little things that brought him peace—training side by side, sharing quiet moments in the garden, and stealing kisses under the shade of the trees. That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, you surprised him with a warm bath, the tub filled with fragrant herbs and petals.

Sanemi leaned back, the tension in his muscles melting away as you gently washed his shoulders. He looked at you, his scarred hand reaching to trace the curve of your cheek.

“You’re too good to me,” he murmured, his voice soft.

You chuckled, leaning into his touch. “And you’re too hard on yourself. But that’s okay. I’ll keep reminding you how amazing you are until you believe it.”

For the first time in years, Sanemi felt a glimmer of hope—hope that maybe, just maybe, he could find happiness despite the darkness of his past. And it was all because of you.

Its the windmill's birthday!

Sanemi like to think of himself as a calm stable individual

He likes to think of himself as a level headed person, a person who wouldn't dare lift a single finger on a person.

So as any calm, sane, stable, and level headed person would do, he was keeping himself from wrapping his hands around the water pillar and choking the everliving life out of those blue eyes.

"Fuckin hell, is there anybody else here? I would take the fucking seaweed head then to be in the same room as mister 'I'm not like the rest of you'"

Now, any sane person would know not to reply to Sanemi since he looked as if he was about to commit murder at any moment but Tomioka Giyuu was everything but sane.

"Hello Shinazugawa, do you know what the date is?"

To be honest, Sanemi couldn't have given a single flying fuck about the date. To him everyday was the same. Clean up from the night before, help Shinobu out in the mansion, Complain to Iguro about some slayers, check on Genya, get assigned a mission, kill demon. and repeat.

He was on the way to check on Genya the stone mansion when an emergency hashira meeting was called thus landing him here, in the same room alone with mismatched haori.

It's safe to assume that Sanemi was pissed.

"Why the fuck would I know the date? And where the fuck are all the others? Himejima-san wouldn't dare being late to a hashira meeting"

"..."

"Well don't just be a stand alone silent bitch, say something!"

"You really don't know the date?"

Okay what was so important about the date that Tomioka fucking Giyuu, the guy that didn't give a shit about time, to be so persistant for him to know the date?

Well, Sanemi knew around 4 days ago it was the 25th. So if he were to add 4 days to 25 he would get

If Sanemi was pissed before (which he was) he was a boiling over volcano now.

"Yes thats it. What else do you want me to say edge lord? A couple days after that one American holiday?"

"Wow, didn't peg you to be the forgetful type Sanemi, thought that was Tokito's job."

"Fuck you, my memory is just fine!"

"Tokito refrain from cursing. Obanai stop picking fights with little kids. Sanemi are you really that stupid?"

Sanemi snorted, happy that he wasn't stuck with depressed emo nerd, but it wasn't long until Obanai's words caught up to him.

"Iguro what did you mean by me being forgetful? I don't think anything important is happening today"

"HAAAH? YOU FORGOT!?"

"Mitsuri if you could lower your voice"

"Right, sorry Shinobu. You forgot!?"

Now Sanemi wasn't angry, he was just confused.

"Alright, first Tomioka drilling me about the date, second Shinobu calling me an idiot and third you telling me I forgot about something? Okay if I forgot about something what did I forget about?"

"Your birthday silly!"

So what, he's 22 now.

He never really celebrated his birthday, too focused on surviving in the hellhole he was supposed to call home. After his father sperm donor was killed, he kind of forgot his birthday existed.

"Wait- how did you guys know it was my birthday?"

"Thats for us to know"

"Iguro you little shit-"

Sanemi sighed and flushed a little red, embarrassed that he forgot, and came face to face with Tomioka the mother fucking Giyuu. Wayyy to close.

If Sanemi was a bit pink then he was a fucking tomato now. One thing he noticed was that Giyuu was holding an ohagi.

"Here, happy birthday"

Sanemi snatched the ohagi from Giyuu's hands and took a bite. It melted right on his tongue and hit the spot. It was the perfect amount of quantity, quality, and sweetness.

"I hope you like it. Genya told me how you like and how to make it. He's a sweet person, your brother. He's also adorable when he focuses. Hope you enjoy it 'Nemi'"

Sanemi likes to consider himself as a very nice person.

So as any calm, sane, stable, level headed person would do, he lunged for Tomioka's throat and proceeded to strangle the everliving shit out of the water hashira.

SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA in DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA (2019—) 4x05, “I Even Ate Demons”

sanemi had always memorized his siblings’ birthdays. he knew them by heart, and, every year, did what little he could manage when the days came. for the most part, he found time to bring something to their graves, sitting properly in front of them and laying the things he brought down. but now the year had started again and genya’s birthday made its yearly appearance—right around the beginning of january. he wasn’t dead (thank god), and sanemi couldn’t bring himself to actually celebrate, not in front of genya. so the most he could force himself to do was somehow sneak some money into genya’s pocket when he was sleeping or something along those lines. but the thing was—for some time now, genya had been staying at gyomei’s house. sanemi couldn’t exactly sneak into there without gyomei catching him. also, genya had a bunch of friends now, and they were crowding him today, having heard from gyomei that it was genya’s birthday. therefore: sanemi was stuck.

it took some time, but sanemi managed to squeeze in a quick sparring session with gyomei between his missions, and the two fought as the children chattered happily inside the stone estate. after they finished, sanemi, who had gladly taken advantage of gyomei’s lack of vision, took out the parcel containing genya’s gift. it was just food—ohagi and some matcha tea—so that sanemi could subtly place it somewhere where genya would find it, and it would pass off as a gift from literally anyone. the only trouble he had was writing. he’d had to make sure genya knew it was for him, so he ended up searching for someone who didn’t know him to tell him how to write happy birthday. after he’d successfully scrawled down the characters (who cared how messily they were written?), he stuck it in one of the folds of the wrapped package and brought it with him on his way to the training grounds.

accepting gyomei’s suggestion to get water, after they’d finished training, sanemi slipped inside, scouring the halls for somewhere he could put the gift. for now, he tucked it under his arm, going to get himself some much needed water. as he passed the room with genya and the others, he found the door slightly ajar. peeking through, he squinted, gazing at the clutter of their joy.

likely hearing him, zenitsu, the louder, blond one, turned to the door in question. a bit tired out from the sparring and not necessarily caring if they saw him (since they likely knew he’d been training with gyomei), sanemi allowed himself to be spotted. surprised, zenitsu’s eyes widened and he stiffened. these drew immediate interest to the door, and someone—tanjiro, the bastard—slid it all the way open. sanemi managed to hide the package behind his back as he narrowed his eyes in a glare inclusive to everyone. the group seemed confused, and mildly perturbed by his presence.

“is everything alright, shinazugawa-san?” tanjiro asked curiously, tilting his head.

sanemi grunted, gaze sweeping briefly to genya, who looked increasingly nervous. “sure,” he huffed. “you guys were making so much fucking noise, i’m surprised himejima let you stay.”

“i’m sorry, shinazugawa-san,” kanao murmured, bowing slightly. she had remnants of a sincere smile from earlier left on her expression, and sanemi momentarily noted that, remembering how little she used to express herself. then he wondered what she was doing here, given genya’s inability to be near anyone female for long—before noticing the conspicuous way genya was positioned on the opposite side of the room as her.

“just be quiet,” sanemi allowed, finally. “it’s irritating.”

genya nodded quickly, and the others followed suit. “sorry, aniki,” he mumbled. “we’ll be quieter.”

he seemed to think sanemi didn’t know what they were doing. but, either way, sanemi left the room, shutting the door behind him. his hands were empty now, as he sought out water, and he smiled to himself, much satisfied. he’d managed to slip the gift beside the ones the others had brought, with the minor distraction they’d provided.

gyomei found him, a couple minutes later, and got himself some water.

“you’re leaving now?” gyomei confirmed, and sanemi nodded.

“yep. nice training with you.”

after all, he’d done what he’d set out to—and had gotten some beneficial training in the process. so he sent gyomei a smile he couldn’t see and headed home.

as genya opened his presents, the others having had to return to their training, his eyes caught on one in brown wrapping. it was more hastily done than the rest, and he wondered if inosuke had, in fact, given him something. picking it up, he gently tugged out a paper that had been tucked in. written with clumsy lettering were the words “happy birthday.” he was doubtful inosuke had gone and bothered to learn how to write just for his birthday, but he couldn’t think of anyone else who would’ve written like that. the others had pretty good handwriting, if not drawings (cough, tanjiro and the card he’d drawn).

opening the gift, he found ohagi and matcha, all tucked neatly inside. his suspicions of it being from inosuke immediately evaporated and his mind strayed back to when sanemi had interrupted them earlier. a large smile on his face, he bit into one of the mochi balls, his spirits rising where they were already high.

sanemi was truly the best aniki in the world.

Unfortunately I didn't get to make something an epic drawing of Sanemi just doodles. But then again, I don't want to miss out the best boi birthday! So here some of my doodles and some are failed attempt.

I was working on my statistics for my research but then again, the birthday boy comes first.

Im still finding a technique for me to be consistent with my drawing, especially with Sanemi. I have some difficulties drawing my best boi though. But I won't give up! I will draw Sanemi Shinazugawa perfectly! And so! I will confidently draw Sanemi without any doubts in mind! And so, future projects! Just wait for me!! I will make hot Sanemi Shinazugawa with my own hands!

These Demon!Hashira ideas took me while to solidify:

Unlike the unknown fates of the Uzui patriarch and brother in canon, this Tengen disposed of them. Sure the jeweled demon has mixed feelings about it but realized that it was for the greater good. Kagaya was the one who ordered him to do it bc his father and brother were indulging their lust in women too much. Those two were really shirking on their duties, thanks to the fact that they keep on using and disposing their many women at an alarming rate.

As for the surviving women who didn’t want anything to do with the demons? They were free to go as long as they vowed not to speak of their existence. Tengen may be the last of his original family but at least he still has his 3 wives.

Ever since Mitsuri hooked up with Obanai, her antics have toned down. She only uses her BDA to trick her opponents, rarely does she use it for pranks.

She misses her original family while her boyfriend doesn’t. But despite his trauma, he’s so grateful to have met her. And if her family were alive, he’d be the best in-law as much as he can.

Ever since Giyuu hooked up with Shinobu, he’s been a bit more open and mopes around less. She enjoys him because he listens to her requests for bringing in poisonous creatures for experimentation.

The mist demon Muichiro and butterfly demoness Kanao definitely enjoyed chasing Tanjiro for his hand in dating. They’re willing to eat food he has cooked, bc they want to remember their human selves’ favorite foods… they’re too used to eating raw human flesh after all.

If Kanae survived, Sanemi wouldn’t have been too angsty or bloodthirsty.

All of these are definitely agreed. I definitely love the idea of Kagaya ordering Tengen to kill his family (he truly does care for Tengen but I can imagine him manipulating Tengen to do his bidding)
