hi!! okay so here are my thoughts on part 5! i'll refrain from having theories since i basically know what directly part 6 is headed (hehe vip access lmao)
starting off strong with that scene of y/n and mark! i cannot stress enough how you decided to go with the slow descent into a rough patch instead of having y/n go absolutely no-contact with anything mark-related. i think it's an integral part of y/n that always takes too much on herself... even when she had no fault in how things played out. jeno revealing his relationship with mark's bff and her getting frustrated at y/n over that and y/n then feeling guilty, jeno being mad at her for dating mark even though *he* broke up with her but y/n accepts it as her fault.
the whole character arc that y/n is going through is basically accepting a version of herself that's beyond the misplaced guilt she feel as a consequence of other peoples' actions. i truly admire the way you delve into her inner turmoil because she's feeling so many things all at ones, news emotions — a deep connection with mark that she never once felt with anyone before, suddenly being ostracized for a simple thing such as dating a guy she likes. she takes third person opinions way too seriously and tried to keep everyone satisfied, subconsciously pushing down her own needs and happiness.
i feel like that's also a big reason why she feels so comfortable with mark. mark puts her above anyone else when she herself undermines her worth. and with him she sees a version of herself that y/n has deemed unachievable since that would mean not taking other people's bullshit for once and getting what she wants for a change.
instead she deflects and tries to distance herself from every sliver of a good thing coming her way. she feels it's undeserved. that's why it's so easy for her to believe mark truly did play with her feelings when he didn't immediately defend her from jeno. it's honestly painful to see her do that to herself and her loved ones but i understand her point of view too well.
now coming to mark and jeno bonding—I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. taeyong becomes coach and tries to rule the court only to be ignored by not one but both sons. oh, what I'd not give to see the look on his face. like they say enemy of ur enemy is ur friend lol. and poor Kun, man is just stuck between the Lees sorting their family issues through basketball :)) also absolutely adored how jeno is coming around and is going from Team "MarkY/n Hate Club" to Team "MarkY/n 4 Life" 😌
the HCM reveal was so real, like if i were Y/n I'd threaten to kill mark, resurrect him and then kill him again. dumbass just take ur meds!!!! but also, it must be crushing for mark to lose the one thing that's stayed constant through his entire life. basketball is like second nature to him and for any athlete through go through a condition/injury that limits their play :((( mark, you'll be okay.
also the Boy Toy Auction! loved everything about that scene!! poor soobin tho, he just wants to go home. save him pls :') Donghyuck owning the spotlight as always and Karina fighting for her man !! i love hot people together lmao they're such an out-of-the-blue yet adorable couple. forgot sassy man, it's sassy couple apocalypse here ✨️ i just know if his bff wasn't there to save Mark, y/n would've folded then and there and bet on her man lol. but she's also such a girl's girl helping mark's bff by betting on jeno (she better have one hell of an apology for my girl y/n cus after she said all that crap, ain't no way she's getting away scot-free 🙃). Jeno is such a attention whOre fr fr and we love him for that
Y/n and jeno bonding is arguably top2 scenes in this part!! i love to see how their dynamic is developing. like, they've known each other for so long and like Jeno said, y/n has seen him at his lowest and I'm sure he's also helped y/n through a lot. and even though they weren't great as a couple, they were friends first. all in all, i love these two's dynamic. they're like a sibling duo fr. jeno teasing her by holding those photographs over his head lol peak sibling behavior. also the hug and forehead kiss 🥹 I'm so soft for them
The Gala Scene HOLY SHIT!! It eas ethereal. like y/n and mark are *the* power couple. like even those girls fawning over Mark have to admit that Y/n is drop dead gorgeous. and the buildup to the sex—dear god that shit ATE. and mark being so soft, practically worshipping her body after... ❤️‍🩹. i don't have much to say about the scenes that follow but i love that they finally actually talked! i think they both needed it, to get on the same page and share whatever has been plaguing their conscience. that way they can start over with a clean slate.
also, mark agreed to y/n's proposal of being just friends for now but the way it's written i can *feel* mark's inner turmoil. like yes, that's his girl and whatever she says, he will follow like law but that's HIS GIRL and how is he supposed to act like he isn't smitten?? how is he supposed to refrain from kissing her, holding her and satisfying his y/n withdrawals???
all in all, as I've said countless times, you write the characters so so wonderfully! i can tell apart each of their voices and actions amazingly and i think that comes when the author understands their own characters to their very core. i think this part was the most important development in mark and y/n's relationship and how they'll move ahead of this rough patch and emerge with their bond stronger than ever. so very excited for part 6, even though I'm devastated that love me back is coming to an end soon. I've grown such a liking to the characters that it'll be hard to see them go. but rest assured I'll be asking about wayyy too many scenarios of them about their life after the storyline concludes :)))

starting with the scene of y/n and mark—thank you for catching what i was trying to do there! the slow descent into a rough patch instead of her completely cutting off all ties was a deliberate choice, and it means so much that you noticed it. it’s such a fundamental part of y/n’s character, isn’t it? the way she always shoulders blame that isn’t hers to carry, how she takes on guilt even when she had no control over what happened. it’s this quiet, self-sacrificing tendency she has that drives so much of her arc. jeno revealing his relationship with mark’s bff and the fallout from that—especially with mark’s bff getting frustrated at y/n over something so wildly unfair—was such a pivotal moment for her. and her reaction? feeling guilty about it, even though she had nothing to do with it? that’s just y/n in a nutshell. she internalizes everything.
what you said about her arc being about accepting a version of herself beyond that misplaced guilt? exactly. her journey is about finding her own worth outside of what everyone else thinks or expects of her. she’s spent so much time trying to please everyone, trying to avoid conflict, that she’s forgotten how to prioritize herself. her connection with mark is a huge part of that—because with him, she doesn’t feel like she has to be anyone else. he sees her in a way no one else ever has, and he puts her above everything, which is something she’s never let herself believe she deserves. and the way she deflects, distances herself from the good things in her life because she thinks they’re undeserved? painful. but also so real for her. it’s why she’s so quick to believe the worst, like when she thinks mark played with her feelings for not immediately defending her against jeno. it’s heartbreaking, but it’s also so true to her character.
now, mark and jeno bonding—this part was so much fun to write, and i’m thrilled you loved it. taeyong trying to rule the court and getting ignored by both of them? absolutely peak chaos. kun being stuck in the middle, just trying to survive the lee family drama? chef’s kiss. and jeno slowly going from “marky/n hate club” to “marky/n 4 life” is such a satisfying shift. i loved writing his arc because it’s not just about mark and y/n; it’s about jeno growing up, too. he’s realizing there’s more to life than holding onto grudges, and seeing him soften is such a joy.
the HCM reveal—oh my god, i knew this would hit hard. he’s so stubborn, so unwilling to let go of the one thing that’s been constant in his life, and it’s devastating. basketball is second nature to him, and the thought of losing it is soul-crushing. but at the same time, he knows deep down that this is a battle he can’t win. writing his vulnerability in this moment, especially with jeno and coach suh there, was such an emotional experience.
the boy toy auction—thank you for loving this chaotic mess of a scene! soobin really did deserve a break, lmao, and donghyuck? king of stealing the spotlight. karina fighting for her man was hilarious to write, and you’re right, y/n absolutely would’ve folded and bet on mark if his bff hadn’t stepped in. and the fact that y/n, ever the girl’s girl, helped out by betting on jeno even after everything? it’s such a small moment, but it shows how she’s still so selfless, even when she shouldn’t be. also, jeno being an attention whore—so true, and we love him for it.
mark agreeing to be “just friends” but clearly struggling with it? i loved writing that subtle inner turmoil. he respects her wishes because he loves her, but it’s killing him. the way he looks at her, the quiet yearning—it’s all there, simmering beneath the surface.
