"People in Halifax were able to digitize their historical photographs on Sunday and share them publicly as part of an initiative by the Halifax municipal archives.

"The archives held a Scan-a-thon at the Halifax Central Library for members of the public to bring in treasured photographs, slides and negatives that showed local history.

"Municipal archivist Susan McClure said the archives are looking for any historical photos, including neighbourhoods, construction projects and pictures connected to the railway."

The Maple Jam: More Submissions!

The Maple Jam has just a few weeks left before time is up, and submissions are rolling in! Let's look at some of the latest!

Forged in the Sun, by Cal Pal, is a Forged-in-the-Dark game about surviving or thriving in a volatile galaxy. It carries a beautiful old-school science-fiction feel, similar to Dune or Star Wars.

My Weekend is All Booked, by souplover13, is a game about being trapped inside the New Halifax Central Library. It includes references to some very Canadian NPCs, as well as some Canadian book recommendations!

The Witch's Curse, by Cheyenne N.K. Stone, is a Monster-of-the-Week mystery about a legend based in St. Thomas, Ontario. It's about Maria Baldwin's grave, and centres around her black gravestone and a black cat seen protecting the grave site.

Dungeoneers, by Sam Robson, is a hack of Protect the Child, a game by me! It's inspired by media like Dungeon Meshi, and centres a bunch of dungeon monsters taking care of a young sorcerer when she's abandoned by her party.

And of course, there's Campaign.Frame, by me! This is a campaign structure designed to accommodate a large number of players, and a large number of games! Inspired by ReBoot, it's full of 90's computer graphics and inspiration to help you slot various ttrpgs into a video-game console.

Halifax Public Library employees hit the picket line on Monday after conciliation talks between their employer and their union fell through. Service adviser Dominique Nielsen was outside Halifax Central Library with about 40 of her colleagues today, and she says many of them aren’t paid enough to make ends meet. The employees’ most recent collective agreement expired in April 2023, and it says librarians make between $59,705 and $68,224 a year, while service support workers — who are the lowest paid employees at Halifax Public Libraries — make between $35,512 and $40,460 annually.

He hopped off to find traffic blocked by a commotion in a downtown park — there were police, protesters and the buzz of a chainsaw. It was Aug. 18, 2021, the day a downtown Halifax homeless encampment was razed and a largely peaceful protest took a rough turn. Riot police clashed with more than 100 demonstrators, some of whom were injured, pepper-sprayed and arrested, as city officials cleared out sheds and tents set up outside the old central library on Spring Garden Road.As Hutchins sat recently on a low brick wall next to his backpack, sleeping bag and tent, a message was scrawled in yellow chalk on the sidewalk below: “Aug. 18th. We won’t forget,” it read. “Drop the charges.”The 2021 clash is still fresh in the minds of many. There were criminal charges against protesters, and a review of the police response is underway. But some observers question how much progress has been made confronting Halifax’s homelessness problem. The number of people without a place to call home has grown over the past two years, and tent cities crowd green spaces across the municipality. The Halifax Central Library will be five years old this week. It's one of the great social spaces in the city. I've enjoyed many presentations in the Regan Hall plus the Pavia Cafe and overhang on the top floor are a couple of my favourite places in the Library. I enjoy taking pictures of buildings under construction and there were many negative comments as it was being built but since it's been completed and won international awards it's been mostly favourable comments. Thank you to Elizabeth Wozniak at Northstar Immigration Law for making it possible to capture this image.

Italy has had approximately the same number of cases three days in a row. This means that their strict lockdown/quarantine procedures are working! GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

China is endorsing the use of favipiravir as an experimental treatment for COVID-19. It has been used to treat influenza before and is showing some promise in COVID patients, by decreasing the duration of the illness and the severity of their lung disease. Watch this space for more!

Virology Corner

Today’s question comes from @greenfairyarmadillo​ and @heturnedleft​. Both asked a variation of the same question: Do we know yet if people who recover from COVID-19 are immune to reinfection or not? Do we expect COVID-19 to be like measles, like flu, or somewhere in between?

We don’t know yet! We know that people have protective antibodies, but my guess based on what I know about other coronaviridae is that the protection will wane pretty quickly, which is more like the flu. But we’ll see! Watch this space for data from China, where we’ll see hard data first.

The other thing to consider is the way that coronaviruses can attenuate, or get less strong, as they spread through populations. So it may be mitigated in the future less by herd immunity and more by attenuation of the SARS-CoV-2 strain itself. But I’m not sure! If I could predict the future I’d be super popular right now. Like, super popular.

All this info is sourced from regional & national public health organizations, plus the WHO. It’s as up to date as humanly possible. I’ve been beaming information about this outbreak directly into my brain 24/7 but I still miss stuff. Please let me know if I miss something!

Most public health departments stop updating their information around 4-5 PM local time on weekdays. That means that the earliest this will come out is around 6 PM Pacific time on weekdays going forward. On weekends things update more sporadically and earlier, so who knows what I’ll do then, but I’ll do my best.
