A Month of Mystery and Shadows Shaina Tranquilino October 1, 2024
As the leaves turn crisp and the days grow shorter, October 2024 marks a special moment in my year-long storytelling journey. For those who have been following along, you know that every month for the next year, I’m diving into a new theme, using it as the creative fuel for a collection of short stories. So far, I’ve explored a wide range of moods and settings. Now, we’re stepping into the eerie, enigmatic heart of autumn, and I couldn’t be more excited to share what’s in store.
This month’s theme is Haunting Whispers.
October always has a certain magic to it, doesn’t it? The crisp air, the glow of pumpkins on doorsteps, the feeling that something unseen might be lurking just out of sight. It’s the perfect time to explore the strange and the spectral, the kinds of stories that send shivers down your spine and make you question every creak in your house late at night.
With Haunting Whispers, I’m going deeper into those unsettling spaces. This theme is all about the voices we can’t quite hear, the secrets hidden just beneath the surface, and the eerie sensation of being watched. Each short story will capture a different aspect of haunting—whether it’s literal ghosts, echoes of the past, or the unsettling whispers of our own minds.
Whispers, especially when haunting, evoke mystery and tension. They can be both intimate and terrifying, something we lean into to hear better, but recoil from once we understand. There’s a quiet power in them—they are hints of something greater, something unknown. This October, I’ll explore those subtle moments of dread, when the truth lingers just out of reach, tempting and terrifying us all at once.
Expect stories with a variety of tones—from ghostly to psychological, from paranormal encounters to more subtle hauntings, where the ghosts aren’t spirits but rather the echoes of choices, memories, and regrets. Some stories might be more traditional in their spookiness, while others will lean into emotional or existential hauntings.
Why Haunting Whispers?
I chose this theme because I believe whispers hold a unique place in storytelling. They can be soft yet insistent, subtle yet unforgettable. A whisper is never meant to be the main event—it's a secret, a suggestion, a call for attention without demanding it. That's why whispers are so haunting—they leave so much to the imagination. What is being said, and more importantly, why is it being said quietly?
For this month, I want to play with that tension—between what's being told and what’s being withheld, what we hear and what we imagine. October is the perfect time to tap into these shadows of storytelling, when the nights are longer and the mind is more prone to wander into strange, unsettling places.
I hope you’ll join me on this month-long journey into the eerie and unknown. Whether you’re a long-time fan of ghost stories or someone who enjoys psychological twists and emotional depth, Haunting Whispers will have a little something for everyone.
Each day, I’ll post a new story, and at the end of the month, I’ll reflect on what I’ve learned from exploring these darker corners of imagination. I’d love to hear from you as well—what whispers are you haunted by? What stories have lingered with you long after you’ve turned the last page?
This October, let’s embrace the mystery of the whispers, the things left unsaid, and the chilling feeling that someone—or something—may be watching from the shadows.
Until then, stay curious, stay haunted, and above all, listen closely. You never know what you might hear.

The Cruel Dark by Bea Northwick
The Cruel Dark Out Now Millicent Foxboro is haunted. Not by ghosts, but by the anguish of her past and the uncertainty of her future. After all, even in the progressive year of 1928, most people would balk at hiring a woman who’d spent two months in a mental ward for traumatic amnesia. So when an uncommon assistantship to a reclusive Professor of mythology falls into her lap with an ungodly…

Friday Free For All - Surgery update - spooky read
Happy Friday. This has been a week of being still and letting my foot start to heal from the surgery. I have had to draw on whatever small amount of patience I have to stay put. I am happy to report that my foot is healing and that I’ve had a minimal amount of pain, for which I am most grateful. I saw the surgeon on Tuesday for the first follow-up and she was very pleased with the outcome, and…

The Whispering Runes Shaina Tranquilino October 27, 2024
No one ventured to the northern edge of Eldridge Forest anymore. The villagers knew better, having passed down stories about the cursed stones hidden deep within the woods, tales that chilled bones and tightened hearts. They spoke of The Whispering Runes, but few knew their origins. Even fewer lived to tell about them.
Mira didn't believe in curses. She was a historian, driven by logic, facts, and the pursuit of knowledge. When she first heard about the runes, she became obsessed with finding them. Her colleagues had warned her—caution etched on their faces—but curiosity had already taken root in her heart.
It was a misty autumn evening when she set out, backpack loaded with supplies, and a lantern swinging by her side. Eldridge Forest loomed ahead, the trees bending like skeletal sentinels guarding some ancient secret. Mira felt a chill crawl up her spine, but she pressed on, determined. Her research indicated the stones lay just a few miles in, hidden beneath a dense canopy of gnarled oaks.
The deeper she went, the quieter it became. The usual sounds of the forest—rustling leaves, the occasional birdcall—had vanished. All that remained was the crunch of her boots on the damp earth and the faint whisper of wind through the branches.
After hours of walking, Mira spotted them—the stones.
They stood in a rough circle in a small clearing, worn smooth by time, yet still ominous in their presence. Each one was engraved with strange symbols, runes that seemed to pulse faintly in the dim light. They were older than anything Mira had seen before, far older than the local folklore suggested. Her heart pounded with excitement as she set down her pack, pulled out her journal, and began sketching the runes.
As her pencil traced the ancient symbols, something shifted. At first, it was subtle—a slight vibration beneath her feet, the air growing heavier, almost thick with tension. Mira paused, looking around, but the forest remained unnaturally still.
She shook it off and continued.
Then she heard it.
A faint murmur, like the soft rustling of leaves, except it wasn’t coming from the trees. It was coming from the stones.
She froze, ears straining. The whispers grew louder, still indistinct, but undeniably human, as if voices were trapped beneath the surface of the runes, trying to claw their way out. Mira stood, staring at the stones, her heart now hammering in her chest. She couldn’t make out what they were saying, but the tone was unmistakable—they were calling her.
Her breath quickened. She took a step back, her mind racing with disbelief. “It’s just the wind,” she whispered to herself, but even she didn’t believe it. The whispers grew louder, more insistent, their cadence rising and falling like a terrible chant. Words began to form, faint but unmistakable: "Come... closer."
Mira’s pulse spiked. Every instinct screamed at her to run, to get as far away from the stones as possible, but something rooted her to the spot. She watched, helpless, as the runes began to glow, faint at first, then brighter, casting an eerie blue light over the clearing.
Suddenly, one of the stones shifted—just a small movement, a creak of ancient stone against the earth—but it was enough. Mira stumbled back, her lantern slipping from her grasp and shattering on the ground, the flame flickering out instantly. Darkness enveloped her.
The whispers grew louder, surrounding her now, filling her mind with a cacophony of voices. She could feel them pressing in, suffocating, as if the very air had turned thick and heavy. Desperation clawed at her chest as she turned to flee, but her legs felt leaden, as though the earth itself had wrapped around her ankles.
And then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw them.
Figures, pale and gaunt, rising from the ground around the stones, their hollow eyes glowing with the same unnatural light. They moved with a jerky, unnatural grace, their limbs too long, their faces twisted in expressions of eternal torment. The runes were no longer just glowing—they were alive, pulsing with each terrible whisper.
The figures moved closer, their mouths opening in unison, releasing a single, terrible word that echoed through the forest:
"Join."
Mira’s scream caught in her throat as one of the creatures reached for her, its bony fingers grazing her skin. She jerked back, heart pounding wildly, but it was too late. Her vision blurred, the air thickening until she could barely breathe. The whispers filled her mind, drowning out her thoughts, pulling her down into the earth itself, just as they had done to countless others before her.
As darkness consumed her, Mira’s last thought was of the runes—those cursed, ancient symbols—forever whispering their terrible truth to anyone foolish enough to listen.
The clearing was silent again.
The stones stood, waiting.
And the whispers continued, calling for the next soul to heed their call.

ARC Signup below 🎃💀👻
https://forms.gle/shmohTuna3QpDqZs7
The Slayer.
Esmerelda Martin.
It’s been a long time since my eyes have feasted on such a beautiful sight.
I’ve never been able to take it slow with her.
I’ve never been able to savor her like she deserves.
I’m too greedy. Too hungry.
A selfish man with a longing.
A craving.
Always eager for just one taste.
The only thing more addictive
than the blood running through her veins
is the pleasure I feel as she invites me in and
quickly lets me tear her apart.
She’s been expecting me just as much as I’ve anticipated her, and I’ve waited centuries to feel her life in my grasp again.
The coven doesn’t know our secret.
A promise several centuries old made in blood.
This time, the hunt, the chase doesn’t end until
she’s marked by me, claimed by me,
finally making her mine for eternity.
